“Congratulations to The Breeze Magazine on their 10th anniversary. Artworks too is celebrating its own anniversary as we have just completed our first year as the new owners. The shop has many regular customers, but we have been pleased to see a lot of new faces as well. We feel that this customer loyalty is partly down to the homely relaxed shopping experience we have tried to create. Expanding the range of art and craft materials on offer has also helped to draw more people in. We currently have lots of great offers, including three for two on selected paints and half price Daler Rowney canvases. We are continuing to support local artists and craftspeople by promoting and selling their work in the shop. With Christmas fast approaching why not pop in and see if you can find the perfect gift. Artworks also has an extensive range of art and craft classes and a bespoke picture framing service. “Thank you for your continued support” say Jessica and Frank Noonan. WHITEGATES - THE WINNING TEAM IN NOTTINGHAM! With a long established presence in the area, Whitegates Estate Agency, based in Beeston goes from strength to strength in both the sales and letting operations of its business. Co-director Julian Divine explains their success: “The Nottingham office is operated and run by myself and Denis Knight. We bought the franchise back in 1995, and to be honest, we couldn't have picked a worse time! I know that nobody feels sorry for an estate agent but the market was so depressed nothing was selling! The one thing we did learn though was how to sell a property, which may sound obvious, but when there are only a few serious buyers you quickly learn to identify who they are, listen to what they are saying and work really hard to help them! Right from the beginning we both knew that we wanted; a business to be proud of. First on the agenda was to offer the best customer service, (especially as we live locally!). This mantra has enabled us to build a good solid reputation of which we are fiercely proud. In fact we have just won a bronze award for best lettings agency in the Midlands! In 2000 we purchased the offices we now occupy, they required so much work we had to lodge in the out buildings while it was completed! Now though we have created an environment that is great for us and also our clients. As we approach late 2012 we have a team of eight bright, enthusiastic staff. We are experts in selling and letting properties across Nottingham, and utilise the latest technology to support our administration and marketing. If you visit our website we hope you will enjoy reading our staff profiles and look forward to demonstrating to you that (in the best tradition of estate agents) we are telling the truth!” Contact Whitegates Estate Agency Telephone: 0115 922 2222 156 High Road, Beeston, Nottingham NG9 2LN Email: Julian.Divine@Whitegates.co.uk

How to enjoy the Christmas season Are you feeling anxious at the thought of the holiday season? You are not alone. Dealing with the rush of parties, gift buying and family expectations can lead to the holiday blues. Think Hypno can help you prepare for and enjoy Christmas. As one of Sharrie’s clients says “I have been able to reduce my stress levels considerably and been given the tools to continue this process for myself.” Sharrie has provided some helpful tips for surviving the holiday season: • Family: don't expect miracles. If family members bicker all year, prepare for this in advance and avoid topics that trigger arguments. • Loneliness: reach out to a friend, relative, or professional. There is nothing to be ashamed of and there are people willing to help. If you know someone who is on their own, reach out to them and you can be the person who makes a difference. • Relax: using deep breathing and hypnotherapy CDs and can help you control anxiety. • Sleep: lack of sleep is the fastest path to burnout. Compensate for the parties by planning in some early nights too. • Move: exercise provides a boost of mood-lifting hormones and gives you some alone time. • Humour: humour can be a tremendous help. Find the funny side of stressful situations and it will help you get through them. To contact Sharrie to find out how she can help you call 0115 9728222 / 07870 417621 or email: enquiries@thinkhypno.co.uk. Further information is available on the website www.thinkhypno.co.uk

Continuing the success ... We look at a new business in our area. If you have a new business and would like to be featured call our team on 0115 967 8663 Let the readers of Breeze know you are here and let your business be a part of the Breeze success! On the 12th December 2000 when Beverley looked back on her year, she decided it was time to change. Her special gift and ability needed to be put into something that would create more support, energy, and be helping the public that needed it. Her decision was to aim to come up with a plan that felt acceptable to Beverley to give and receive energy but continue to help others at the same time. Beverley decided to leave her current industry- that she was externally fruitful and put her energies into her gift that felt so natural to her Medium ship and Work on her new company creating energy for people less fortunate than herself. Beverley began to receive money for her special gift and moved forward to developing her concept of ‘Ask the Question & Zodiac’. We donated 30 % of our readers money to a chosen charity. Our first charity was the Alzheimer society and our second was to the children's hospice for Leukaemia. We are now working towards helping families less fortunate than ourselves. Our first project in this area is about a young 7 year old girl Joanne who has lost the use of her leg's and is waiting to undergo an operation. Her father died last year with a Brain Tumor and her brother is Autistic. We believe as a team that we are not only supporting people in need with their own personal problem's. But using our energies to help better someone's life. We have worked as a group giving one to one readings, working in churches and doing public demonstrations around the globe and we are now offering our services to you the public. Providing you with quality yet affordable readings. Commencing and launching our service in the USA with have now brought this product to the UK online. We will offer you a high standard of Live Tarot readings where you will find the answers to all your needs. Remember we have all been lost at some point in our lives”.

Crumble the cheese over the filling. 8.Fold the top over the filling, followed by the bottom and sides. This should leave you with a nicely packed parcel shape. (Don’t over fill if you have too much filling.) 9.Bake in oven for 30-35 minutes, until cooked.

Next Stop Beeston and Chilwell

advertorial

If you have visited Beeston town centre recently you can’t help but notice some changes which are starting to take place. The changes are part of a multi-million project to extend the tram to Beeston and Chilwell. If you would like to find out more, evening drop-in information sessions are planned to take place in December to keep you update, but below is some brief information about the progress of the project so far. Site clearance and demolition work along the tram route are almost complete and the vast majority of works currently taking place involve moving the different types of utility services away from the tram route. Once utility services have been moved, the main tram infrastructure works, such as laying the tram tracks and installing tram stops and other equipment can start. You may also have seen works associated with the tram are taking place to widen the junction of Queens Road and Meadow Lane, and once complete, works will take place at the Queens Road/Station Road junction. This will improve road capacity along the A6005 and provide an alternative route to Chilwell Road which will be subject to the tram works throughout 2013. Overall the construction of the tram extensions, which will also go to Clifton, is expected to take approximately three years to complete. Evening drop-in information sessions are to be held in Chilwell, at Eskdale Junior School on Tuesday 4th December, and in Beeston, at the Town Hall on Thursday 13th December. Come along and find out the latest tram construction news. For more information visit: www.thetram.net/phasetwo or call: 0115 924 24 54.

Pollyanna Pickering’s Christmas exhibition in her private gallery at Brookvale House Oaker, Matlock, Derbyshire, (AA Signposted) from 19th Nov to 2nd Dec will round off a very busy and exciting year.

In October Pollyanna travelled to Canada to receive the most prestigious International award in the field of Wildlife Art – The Artists for Conservation's Simon Combes Conservation award – at a glittering gala dinner. AFC President and Founder, Jeff Whiting explains: "We are very proud to honour Pollyanna for her long-term dedication and contributions to conservation causes around the world. Pollyanna has shown extraordinary leadership in giving back to the subjects she depicts so passionately in her paintings." The beautiful bronze trophy will be on display throughout the exhibition alongside fifty new paintings of British Wildlife, in a special ‘Golden’ exhibition to celebrate the fiftieth event she has held in her own gallery. There will also be the opportunity to see the award winning painting ‘On the Tiles’ depicting a black cat, which scooped first prize in the Association of Animal Artists 2012 Awards. Pollyanna will be on hand throughout the event to chat to visitors, and will be happy to sign copies of her books and fine art prints, including her latest book ‘Wildness’, which has been published in collaboration with the Born Free Foundation. Two new limited edition prints will be launched at the gallery, and also on display will be Pollyanna's wide range of cards and giftware, including a selection of her exclusive deigns for Harrods. There will be new calendars for 2013, and over 250 Christmas Card designs to choose from, including many commissioned by Charities including Guide Dogs for the Blind, The Born Free Foundation and the NSPCC. Ten percent of all sales will raise funds for conservation projects.

breezegardening Tools of the trade. Whilst we start to enter the relatively quiet time of gardening it may be time to take a look at your hard worn garden tools and see if there is anything you may want to put on your Christmas list!

T

he range of garden tools is bewildering and every year new ones are introduced promising great things to all mankind! What, though, really matters when we come to choose the basic but essential instruments of our hobby? After all, if we don’t use our bare hands to dig etc then we must surely notice a difference between a better tool as different from a so one? Quite apart from how long your investment in a given instrument will last (think about the old one of the ‘false economy’ when buying too cheaply) there is, for many of us, a feeling of satisfaction in using something which clearly bears the marks of care in it’s design and manufacture - all helping to make the physical aspects of the hobby a little easier and more enjoyable somehow. Some tips on what to look out for: Try to buy tools made from forged metal due to it being tempered to align the particles, giving it tensile strength. Tools pressed from sheet metal are weak and lends themselves to corrosion. Good quality handles made from ash or fibre-reinforced resin will be

much stronger. Always try them for comfort, fit and ease of handling before buying. Many tools for use in the standing position have handles that tend to be too short which can cause back ache, e.g spades and forks. For small hand tools select ones which have bright handles so that they will be easier to spot among foliage or against the darker soil. For wheelbarrows, choose a pneumatic tyre type as solid tyres are difficult to get over the slightest bump - like a cheap bicycle wheel is. Main items used Spades: The spade should be the correct weight and many of the spades sold are much too short for some of us taller gardeners,so consider replacing the handle with a longer one from a hardware shop. The blade may be a long narrow one for heavy stoney ground or wider, shorter ones for lighter soil. Look for a forged blade set at a slight angle, not straight in profile nor made of pressed steel, ie. folded out of sheet metal. The choice between carbon and stainless steel is down to frequency of use. If yours spends most of its time in the shed the stainless one will stay smooth and will pass better through the soil. A thin layer of rust will form on the surface of the ordinary steel one when left for any length of time, and will tend to clog up with soil during use. (continues...)

breezegardening Fork Stainless steel does not have an advantage over carbon steel as a little rust on the tines (the individual forks) will not matter here due to the smaller surface area in contact with the soil so by all means get yourself a good quality carbon steel one as it will probably last longer and may be more resistant to bending. As with the spade there are two main sizes - a digging fork and a smaller border fork. The smaller size is sometimes referred to as a 'lady's fork' as it is easier to handle, but is useful for use by gents as well! Hand Trowel/Fork Stainless steel is probably best as the blade stays cleaner and is easier to spot if left lying around. Choose one made from forged metal rather than pressed steel as pressed steel will bend easily and frustrate you as you get the hand pliars out time and time again! Look for a good comfortable handle - some have soft ‘gel’ grips now - and in bright colours! Hoe The blade of both types should always be sharp to cleanly sever the top growth from the roots - a good sharpening stone will suffice for this purpose and can be used at various times during the year to ‘top up’ the edge. Care for your tools How often have you come back to your garden tasks only to find a claggy spade, looking very sorry for itself and demanding immediate cleaning before you can even start? Let’s face it, many of us like to just ‘put things away’ rather than clean down and then put everything away all tidy - it’s another task. This task though is important if you want to keep slicing edges clean on spades and forks smoothly functioning etc. Along with basic cleaning with water so no soil remains you can also remember not to leave them outdoors where the metal will rust and wooden handles will rot. A rub over with an oily rag will preserve the metal. Wooden handles will last longer and be more pleasant to hold if given a rub with boiled linseed oil occasionally (linseed oil is not expensive anyway). If you are thinking of buying a garden tool as a gift for someone (and why not - they may not bother to ‘treat themselves otherwise!) then consider where you buy from so they can swap it if needs be. So, keep on top of your tools so they help you. Happy Gardening!

STRUGGLING WITH JOBS AROUND THE HOME? Those smaller jobs around that the home are often the subject of our dissatisfaction. On the one hand we feel we ought to be able to do them ourselves but on the other hand we realise (if we are honest with ourselves!) that we either haven’t got the spare time, are just too busy ‘getting on with life’ or are simply unable to as we have aged. “If only we knew somebody to just do this or do that” I get told by some of my customers, who have decided to finally get help from me” says Graham of Swift DIY Services. “I am geared up to do those jobs that somehow get left and can cause real upset. Perhaps a reminder of what we can’t or don’t do. It really isn’t necessary though to simply put up with things as they are and feel despondent as I can be that person who you need to get the job done and without paying a small fortune - in fact affordability is one of the main aspects of my business”. Graham realised that there was a market for the type of help that he offers and decided it was time to act and set up his business over a year ago. Since then he has gained a steady flow of work through repeated contact with his customers who have been impressed by the quality of his work and his friendliness. “I don’t charge silly prices and I always show respect for my customers. In return they are very loyal towards me and I often see them again soon for ‘that other job’ they needed doing the first time round! Contact Graham on 07734 902951 or 0115 9469690

HAS YOUR DOG GOT ARTHRITIS? It’s the time of year when it gets cold and wet and this is when arthritic joints often feel worse. This is just as true for dogs as it is for people. Signs that your dog has arthritis vary from one to another. Some of the commoner signs might be:

breeze promotion

• Slowness on getting up after lying down • Not being able to jump into the back of the car unassisted • Walking more slowly • Lying down at every opportunity • Licking at a particular joint such that the hair changes colour Arthritis hurts and all of the above are signs of pain. Some dogs may even get a bit grumpy because of the discomfort. Studies show that most people with arthritic dogs do not recognise that their dogs are in pain. This is a shame because arthritic pain can be very successfully treated in most dogs and those that are treated will enjoy a greatly improved quality of life. Churchcroft Vets are keen to help make sure all the affected dogs are identified so that they can be helped. To encourage owners of elderly dogs to check whether they have arthritic pain, Churchcroft will examine any dog over seven years old for signs of arthritis FOR FREE any time in November. If you have a suspicion that your elderly pooch is slowing down or if you just want to make sure he is fine, give Churchcroft a call on 0115 922 4855 and ask for a FREE arthritis check. There’s no harm in checking after all!

WANT TO MAKE YOUR SOLAR PV SAVE YOU EVEN MORE? Andrew Grattage is pleased to be one of the first in the UK to offer a bill reducing new unit called GEM that helps you create free hot water! Andrew explains: “Micro-generation systems such as solar PV) are at their most efficient when all of the energy produced is used at the point of generation, i.e. within the household where the generator is sited. This results in the minimum possible use of imported energy. This new and automatic system works even whilst you are out of the house. The GEM (Generated Energy Management system) does this is by storing excess generated energy as heat in a hot water cylinder, rather than allowing it to be exported to the grid. Every unit of power used to heat the hot water in this way reduces imported energy by the same amount resulting in a significant saving in imported energy costs. Why you get the extra savings with GEM: Here is the real good news: Because export energy is not metered but assumed to be 50% of all energy generated you still continue to get the export tariff on half of all units generated by your system even if GEM ensures that no energy is actually exported! GEM is, in effect, a double saving because you still get paid for your installed solar PV as well as getting your hot water costs reduced. This is the time to get saving with this fantastic and very clever device which I can now install for you” Contact Andrew Grattage on 07889 247939 and knock those bills back down now!

Chilly mornings, swirling mists, wet roads and steamed up car windows. Autumn in all its glorious colours is already well established and these are the signs that our world is closing down to rest over the winter months to gather strength for the following spring. Time too for us all to pay attention to our bodies, especially our feet. Marion Mortimer is just the person to call...

Getting into a cold car, for instance, it’s lovely to turn up the heater and toast our toes in the warmth. Having mentioned chilblains in a previous issue, I stress again at this time of year that extremes of heat and cold are a contributing factor. Our bodies are generally good at adapting to varying temperatures but as time goes by, we become a little less efficient at dealing with rapid changes. “Last winter, I saw an even greater number of patients with chilblains and without a doubt, it is far better to get ahead of the game now by making sure that you pay special attention to your feet. Warm socks and comfortable shoes or boots making sure they are not too tight or your circulation could become compromised. Embark on a rich foot cream massage which will not only moisturise hard skin areas but also help to stimulate a good blood supply to heels and toes. This lovely cream massage is best done on going to bed so that you avoid the danger of slipping on hard floors, whilst overnight, the cream can get on with its work while you sleep. It really is worth the effort and you will enjoy the fruits of your labour by paying attention to your hard working and grateful feet. Check your dietary intake now which should include plenty of fruit, oily fish and vegetables. Perhaps a multi vitamin boost is appropriate, you could check this out with your GP, especially if you are taking other medicines. Call Marion on 0115 939 3662 and book your appointment now!

TAKING CONTROL OF ANXIETY

Congratulations to Breeze on your 10th Anniversary

Martin J Smith PhD Leading local psychotherapist discusses some of the many concerns about negative anxiety and how to effectively treat it. Anxiety is like stress, there are good and bad forms, we often decide in ourselves if we have positive excitement about things such as work or relationships or if we have anxiety and are stressed by these things. If we stop to think about it the actual feeling state is very similar and this can often be a problem. As we start to suffer from negative anxiety and stress we begin to lose the ability to differentiate the positive from negative. Anxiety and depression often go hand in hand and it can be easy to see why. We begin to attach a sense of negative anxiety to all that we do and simply lose the ability to feel OK. Once this negative spiral begins to form it becomes almost automatic and we find ourselves becoming well practiced at seeing everything we do and everything around us in a negative light. Taking back control can be very difficult if we are trying to do it alone, the task can be far easier if we are willing to allow others to help. Family and friends can assist, but more specialist assistance can turn things around faster than people first realise. Martin Smith specialises in helping people with issues around anxiety. Even in the first session Martin works to help people become more aware of how anxiety works and how it can pull us down so quickly and effectively. By giving some answers and setting some simple yet powerful tasks in the very first session, Martin helps people to begin to stop the downward spiral and allows them to regain control of their life. Martin firmly believes that anxiety and depression should not rule peoples lives and has worked with many client’s to break the negative cycle that so often engulf them and all aspects of their lives. To see what he can do to help you or a family member, call in direct on 07 973 410 010 to make an appointment. You can also email on itctherapy@aol.com for more information. Martin does appointments at times to suit including evenings and weekends so call him down and start to take control.
