breeze what’s on
The People’s Theatre Company Nottingham (PTC) production of ‘Cinderella’ is filled with lots of fun and laughter for everyone. It’s a show for all the family and not to be missed. The PTC Cinderella voluntary set designers, set builders and set painters are busy constructing the magical land of pantomime at The Nottingham Arts Theatre. The PTC cast members are working hard and focusing on their dancing, in order to pack heaps of energy in to this year’s pantomime. Rehearsals for Cinderella are being enjoyed by everyone involved. The pressure and competition is on to win more awards after collecting Best Director Award and Best Presentation Award for Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood (last year’s pantomime production), awarded by Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Drama Association (NANDA). Award winning Amada Hall returns this year to the PTC, writing and directing this beautiful, traditional, family, community focused, sparkling and glitter filled pantomime Cinderella. This follows on from our debut on BBC4 last year (2014) where the PTC were listed in all the Christmas TV guides, billed as a top viewing show “Panto! Mayhem, Makeup and Magic” produced and directed by local international budding film maker Jeanie Finlay, which followed our 2012 production of “Puss in Boots”, also written and directed by Amanda Hall. We very much look forward to seeing you at least one of our 18 performances this December 2015. There is a slightly different cast this year, but there are a few regular faces who you see every year that get you up out of your seats dancing, singing, toe tapping and joining in the heckling. Mike Pearson is the prettiest, Ugly Sister we’ve ever seen, which is a must see and Laura Thurman is your rusty and magical Fairy Godmother this year and she is insisting that Cinderella will go to the ball! We will leave the rest of the cast names as a surprise for you. Are you ready to be entertained and amazed? Saturday 5th December 2015 to Sunday 20th December 2015 evening shows start at 7pm Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday matinees start at 2pm at The Nottingham Arts Theatre, George Street, Nottingham, NG1 3BE Visit www.nottingham-theatre.co.uk for show times and prices and to book tickets online. Local theatre group Riverside Drama Company stage their next production ‘The Ladykillers’ at the Duchess Theatre, Long Eaton from Wednesday 25 – Saturday 28 November. The play, written by Graham Linehan, is a classic comedy based on the original 1955 film, which starred Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers. Posing as amateur musicians, Professor Marcus and his gang rent rooms in the lopsided house of sweet but strict Mrs Wilberforce. The villains plot to involve her unwittingly in Marcus’ brilliantly conceived heist job. The police are left stumped but Mrs Wilberforce becomes wise to their ruse and the gang conclude that there is only one way to keep the old lady quiet. With only her parrot, General Gordon, to help her, Mrs Wilberforce is alone with five desperate men. But who will be forced to face the music? Home Instead Leading The Way... Would you like to make a difference?… Home Instead have once again been revealed as England’s leading homecare provider in a report from the UK’s leading healthcare information specialist, Laing & Buisson. The report, Laing & Buisson’s Care Compliance Monitor, includes headline data from Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection reports and presents a digested view of providers’ performance. “We are proud of our success and the fact that more and more people trust us with their support and care, or that of their relatives. We know that our ability to deliver consistent and person centred care is due to the fact that we have a passionate, committed and caring team of CAREGivers. Without each and every member of our team we would not be able to provide the support our Clients need and deserve.” Our challenge is now to find additional CAREGivers who can help us continue our development in support of our mission to become the UK’s most admired Care Company through changing the face of ageing. We are looking for CAREGivers who can help us to assist people with non medical services including Companionship, Home Help and Personal Care in their own home If you are dedicated, have a caring and compassionate nature and a genuine desire to work in an environment where you will be helping others then please get in touch. We offer full training, 10 to 25+ flexible working hours to include evening and weekends, excellent pay, healthcare cash plan and paid holidays. Own transport is required as part of our service includes taking Clients out. If you would like to apply or simply find out more about being a CAREGiver give us a ring or send us an email. Regardless of age, background or experience we would like to hear from you. Please call 0115 9226116 or send an email to: recruitment.nottingham@homeinstead.co.uk

One of our CAREGivers was recently interviewed as part of a careers recruitment programme. When asked about the role of a CAREGiver, Katie who is 26, said; “I have regular clients and depending on my availability I work 20-24 hours a week, this is perfect for me as I have young children and I can fit work around them. Twice a week I take a lady who is 86 shopping, she loves going out and looking around the shops. Without me to assist her she wouldn’t be able to do that” Katie also said; “If you are thinking about becoming a CAREGiver I would say it is a very satisfying and rewarding job, it is not the job you first think it is, you walk away at the end of the week knowing you have made a difference to somebody’s life, who without you would not necessarily have the quality of life they want to have”

breeze promotion Local Handmade Gifts Created By Hand is owned and run by fused glass artist David Humphreys and as the name suggests the shop specialises in promoting fine handmade gifts, from some of the best makers in the region. David began working with glass in 1997 and his first piece (a stained glass tiffany style lamp) he still has today. After many years working with stained glass David bought a kiln and started fusing and slumping glass. Although coming from an engineering background, a series of life changing events helped David to focus his attentions on what he loves the most - working with glass. “There is a wealth of talented people in Nottingham and the surrounding areas and we are keen to promote their work through the shop, be that in ceramics, jewellery, paper, mixed media and of course, glass. Offering quality gifts is our main objective and if it’s unusual, unique or something that makes you smile then we want to know about it. The shop also arranges Craft Workshops, taught by some of the makers themselves. So if you are looking for a unique gift for a family member or friend, or simply want to treat yourself, then visit Created By Hand to view our ever changing range of quality handmade products and chat with Dave to see if he can persuade you to take up a new hobby.

breeze promotion
For twenty five years Robert and David, the boys at Stylistic Upholstery have been lovingly tending to your upholstery needs. 2016 will see big changes for them both. Breeze wishes them all the best and encourage readers to continue supporting them... Unfortunately the ravages of time and the sound of cracking knee joints has made us reconsider our continued occupancy of our Attenborough Lane Showroom and Workshop. Sadly, with this in mind we have decided to make this our last Christmas as Stylistic and end sometime in the first quarter of 2016. Complete retirement will however only affect Robert, now approaching his 70th year. David will continue, however, being a mere stripling at 60 years old! The showroom will hopefully continue in a similar but more condensed vein under a different guise with all the re-upholstery continuing to be done by David, as now. In the New Year we will be looking to offer all our Showroom furniture at bargain discounted prices with no reasonable offer refused. We hope, as now, you will continue to support us, up to and onward from the new stewardship.

sing for your heart
National charity Heart Research UK is calling on choirs, singers and performers across Nottingham to flex their vocal chords and “Sing for Your Heart” in the run up to Christmas.
Singing is good for your heart and recent studies have shown that the health benefits are both physical and psychological because it is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream. The charity wants singers, choirs, music groups and performers to do their own event in December and raise money to help in the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease. This year’s appeal also includes a call to local pubs in Nottingham to organise their own fundraising sing- a-long for the local community in the festive season. Taking part in Sing for Your Heart is easy. All you need to do is: • choose a date in December • pick your venue • perform to an audience • raise money to help hearts near you Heart Research UK has also spent £35,000 on Healthy Heart grants in local communities in Nottingham in the last six years. Almost £20,000 of this was awarded to Notts County FC Football in the Community for two projects – one that helped overweight football fans in Nottingham take part in sports sessions to help them lose weight, increase fitness and reduce their risk of developing heart disease.
breezemagazine20
Barbara Harpham, National Director of Heart Research UK said the charity was calling on people to put on their own performance in the run up to Christmas. “Everyone can Sing for their Hearts, whether you’re in a band, choir or just partial to a bit of karaoke,” she said. “It’s the perfect excuse to get together with friends, family and colleagues to have fun and raise money for Heart Research UK particularly in the run up to Christmas when everyone is feeling festive.” Singing is also shown to be good for your heart. Professor Graham Welch, Chair of Music Education at the Institute of Education, University of London, has studied developmental and medical aspects of singing for 30 years. He says: “The health benefits of singing are both physical and psychological. Singing has physical benefits because it is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, even when sitting.“ A more recent study was carried out at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden into music and wellbeing which showed how musical structure influenced the heart rate of choir members. Bjorn Vickhoff, who led a study, said: “Singing is good for your health. Our research indicates that it may even be good for your heart. Further research in this field is much needed, such as the long term effect of choir singing.”

The Highly Commended Award is given to a group that has created an integrated, well-planned and creative campaign that reached lots of people, engaged the media, and communicated the Fairtrade message imaginatively. On receiving the award, Toni Thorncraft-Smith from St Michael and All Angels Church accompanied by their Fairtrade Mascot Marcel, said: ‘“When you hear how people in developing countries are exploited, you can’t help but be passionately on their side - especially as we in the West have so much and get a decent reward for our labours. We want buying Fair Trade to be the norm, not the exception. That’s the message we keep giving out at St Michael’s and that’s why we’re so encouraged to get this award today.” Adam Gardner, Communities Campaigns Manager at the Fairtrade Foundation, said: “St Michael and All Angels Church has made an exceptional commitment to farmers and workers around the globe who are continuously working hard to bring us the products we love. All too often these communities are not receiving a fair price for their work, but campaigners from Bramcote have shown their dedication to this cause. It’s so important for communities to get involved and let their voice be heard. “Thanks to the ongoing support of campaigners and businesses around the UK, Fairtrade today reaches millions of vulnerable farmers and workers in over 70 countries. We are constantly inspired and surprised by the overwhelming support the British public shows Fairtrade. Thank you and congratulations to St Michael and All Angels Church for making an incredible contribution to the Fairtrade movement.” The one day conference in London brought together campaigners from across the UK, Fairtrade producers and experts in global development. The day featured a sneak peek into the Fairtrade Foundation’s 2016-2020 strategy, innovative and informative workshops and the launch of Fairtrade Fortnight 2016, among many other items. Fairtrade has paved the way for sustainable trading by providing a safety net for world’s poorest farmers against volatile market prices, and the Fairtrade Premium to invest in vital community, business and environmental projects. The UK has one of the most powerful networks of Fairtrade campaigners in the world, About the Fairtrade including over 600 Fairtrade Towns, 1350 Fairtrade Schools and 170 Fairtrade Universities, and Foundation 7,500 Fairtrade places of worship. Free puppy health checks and free puppy parties. Make sure your puppy grows up into a well-rounded individual. Did you know that puppies have a critical learning period before twelve weeks old? During that first twelve weeks they will accept new experiences without fear which prevents a lot of problems that owners of unsocialised puppies experience. Poorly socialised puppies can be aggressive to other dogs or fearful and yappy. Puppies that are well socialised as youngsters become more sociable adult dogs who are easier to walk amongst other dogs and are generally better canine citizens. Churchcroft Vets have been running puppy parties for seven years now and Nurse Trainee Becki says “It’s really interesting how confident and well behaved the dogs are that came to our socialisation classes as puppies. They interact beautifully with other patients at the surgery and avoid problems with other dogs”. Churchcroft have a special offer on to help all puppy owners get their dogs vaccinated early and into the puppy classes. Beeston Wildlife Group, new talk season
THE GEOLOGY OF THE PLANET – A TALK BY COLIN BAGSHAW 16th November 2015, 7.30pm - 9.30pm Trent Vale Infants School, Trent Road, Beeston Rylands, Nottingham, NG9 1LP
About the talk The composition of soils has a profound effect on the natural history of an area and is dependent on the rock types found at depth beneath. Geology, the study of the Earth and its rocks, therefore plays an important role in our understanding of the development of various environments. This illustrated talk will initially address the structure of the Earth and the processes which take place within it and on its surface. This will be followed by an explanation of how and when some locally occurring rock types were formed. About the speaker Colin graduated in Geology from Nottingham University in the early 1960s before embarking on a career which included teaching to groups in schools, adult education and the Open University. This involved leading field trips to many parts of Britain and abroad.

We have had a very nice run of rather mild weather lately and this has been helpful to wildlife as we enter the realms of winter somewhat slowly.... When winter truly bites we can give a little help to our garden friends. As soon as the frost really turns up on a regular basis. Attracting birds to the garden can add colour and variety and are fascinating to watch! Gardens don’t need to be messy to offer a variety of wildlife habitats in winter. Natural foods for birds often look attractive – brightly-coloured berries on trees, windfall apples and pears, ivy berries and the seeds of plants such as docks and teasels all work well. But as winter progresses, birds will become more dependent on the food you put out. This is when they use feeders most heavily, so hygiene is important: clean your feeders and tables now by soaking them in sterilising fluid, and get into the routine of washing them regularly. Of course there are other types of wildlife in your garden and they ned care too - Peacock butterflies and small tortoiseshells hide in shed corners during the winter so try to avoid disturbing them. Toads and newts (always under great environmental pressure) like to spend the cold winter months in greenhouses or under
pots or piles of bricks. Frogs are more likely to be seen in piles of leaf litter, while some males will hide at the bottom of ponds if you have one. Ladybirds gather in large clusters to overwinter on dead plant stems, particularly in more sheltered parts of the garden. Patchwork leaf-cutter bees use holes in dead wood as nest chambers, as do several other insects. Help them by drilling holes in a log or a block of wood left over from your DIY. Dragonfly larvae stay active even in midwinter, so always clean your pond with care. Spiders often overwinter as eggs so avoid digging your beds except when necessary. Moths survive the winter in the soil as larvae or pupae so the same goes for those too. This is the season when it’s easiest to get into your garden to make changes in preparation for the coming year. So take the opportunity to look around and decide where to add new wildlife features, such as a log pile or pond. Pay special attention to your flowerbeds and hedges – it’s time to single out the
plants that do not contribute very much, swapping them for species that will attract more animals to your garden. But what about our plants? The Plant Hardiness Zone is a guide to let you know which plants will grow and survive where you live. Hardiness zones show the coldest average temperatures for each region. If a plant is referred to Zone 6 – we know that it will withstand a winter in that area. Plants that grow outdoors have to be able to withstand these temperatures if they are to survive the winter - or else be covered up or brought indoors to a conservatory type area. (Continues...)

breeze gardening Does it matter if we are growing in a greenhouse? Well these zones will let us know if we will need to add additional heating for the plants that we are growing, depending on the area that we are in. They show the average coldest temperature that plant can withstand. Here in most of the UK we are in Zone 8 which means that we generally average coldest winter temperatures between -12c to -7c so we need to make sure that we do not plummet to those You can heat your greenhouse naturally with the sun or use artificial heat. In some cases though your night heat will be up to 10 -20 degrees higher, using just the free power of the sun. Paving slabs can act as mini ‘storage heaters’ if the get full sun. For those who think they don’t have the space for a greenhouse there are a variety of lean-to greenhouses that can fit in a tight space such as a yard or smaller garden. Winter Colour in the garden It may be the time to get some colour and texture into your garden this year and shrubs can be left to themselves during these colder months and yet still deliver for you. Witch Hazel These lovely shrubs work hard for you and in the autumn their leaves produce colourful displays as they fall, then in winter the bare branches are covered with fragrant, spidery flowers. Winter Jasmine Arching shrub with flowers along the bare green stems before the oval leaves emerge. It is best in a spot in full sun, and can be trained against a wall to soften it if you have a fairly plain type of brick (rather than the softer looking ‘vintage’ brick we sometimes see in older properties).

Viburnum An upright deciduous shrub with oval leaves. For the longest time clusters of deep pink buds on the bare stems open to reveal delicate, very fragrant flowers. Lawn Care For our lawns we still need to care for them: As we move further into winter, make the most of any dry days and rake the lawn to keep it free of leaves. A thick layer of leave smothers lawn areas and weakens the grass. Avoid walking on your lawn if it's frosted, as this can also damage the grass. If you haven’t given your lawn a feed then use an autumn lawn fertiliser, which is high in phosphates and potash, but do be quick about it - you should have done this last month! (the recent mild weather will have extended this period though). This will help strong roots to develop, which will produce healthy leaves. Don't be tempted to use a spring fertiliser. These contain high levels of nitrogen, which encourages soft, sappy leaf growth that's vulnerable to disease and could be damaged by frost. We still have lots to enjoy in the garden so keep learning!

New Horizons for Family Funeral Homes One of Kimberley’s most recognisable landmarks has begun a new chapter in its history as it opened its doors on 2nd November as a funeral home. The funeral home has been created by the Eastwood Funeral Partnership and replaces its current premises in the town, Kimberley Funeral Service at 35 Main Street. The Partnership have recently united their four funeral homes under a single name; Gillotts Funeral Directors. The Gillotts name has been associated with funeral service in Heanor for generations, and has been part of the Eastwood Funeral Partnership for over 20 years since the merger of the Eastwood and Heanor firms in 1992, and subsequent renaming of the Stapleford funeral home in 2008. The name is also being extended to cover the Eastwood office; formerly Eastwood and District Funeral Service, and the new premises at Kimberley. Joanne Hutsby, a funeral director and a partner in the company, said that these changes represent a new era both for the Kimberley office and for the partnership as a whole. “We are very proud to have brought one of Kimberley’s iconic buildings back into use. It is a wonderful building and allows us to offer our families a modern, comfortable and quiet place to visit to arrange a funeral or spend time with their loved ones.” Our new identity – which we feel better reflects our family heritage, and the unity of the business as a whole, we hope that families will appreciate that, whether you live in Heanor, Stapleford, Eastwood or Kimberley, the same caring and compassionate service is available from all of our funeral homes.

NUMBER OF CONTESTED PROBATES INCREASES
breeze promotion
Figures released by the Ministry of Justice in October show that nearly double the number of probate disputes were heard by the High Court in 2014 compared to 2013, and the highest figure for England and Wales since 2007. This increase in disputes over how estates are distributed and contested wills might be attributed to more complicated family arrangements including step-parents and half siblings. If a person in a second marriage does not make a will to provide for their children, the children may be left with nothing depending on the size of the estate and be forced to bring a claim. It is estimated that the number of disputes could continue to rise in the future due in part to the popularity of homemade wills which are written without seeking legal advice and which family members can often dispute. Eleanor Robinson, a solicitor in Wills, Probate and Trusts at Rothera Dowson says: “The wide diversity of family circumstances in modern society mean that intestacy provisions are not suitable in a large number of estates. It is vital that people consider who they wish to leave their assets to and make valid wills with proper legal advice to reflect their wishes. If you need advice on making or contesting a will contact Rothera Dowson’s Wills and Probate team on 0800 158 5316

the four seasons
Pollyanna Pickering is one of the most collectable painters of wildlife art – and every winter she opens her private gallery in Derbyshire for an exhibition inspired by the British Wildlife she loves. Over 50 paintings will be exhibited to the public for the first time from the 14th to 29th November in the relaxed and comfortable atmosphere of her private gallery at Brookvale House, Oaker, near Matlock (AA signposted). Visitors will be welcome between 10.00am – 6.00pm each day, admission free This year Pollyanna has created a new collection of work inspired by her love of the countryside in every season – the dramatic snow and ice of winter to the fresh flowers and adorable baby animals of spring. Many of the birds and animals featured in the paintings were cared for by Pollyanna in the years when she ran her own wildlife sanctuary from her home – which also provided a unique opportunity to study and sketch the creatures in her care. This close contact is reflected in the realism and vitality of the individual portraits. Pollyanna will be in the gallery throughout the exhibition, and will be happy to chat about her work, and share some of the stories about the animals which inspired her. The exhibition will round off an exceptionally busy year for Pollyanna. During her career she has won over thirty awards for excellence in Art and conservation. In 2015 she was honoured to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Inspirational Women Awards, recognising her exceptional achievements in both wildlife art and international conservation. Two new limited edition prints will be launched at the event. Also on display throughout will be Pollyanna's extensive ranges of greetings cards, fine art and limited edition prints, and a wide variety of gift ware featuring her work, including signed sets of her postage stamps, alongside giftware exclusively commissioned by Harrods. Brand new card and papercrafting kits and printable DVDroms will also be available - as launched live on television in a series of increasingly popular programmes featuring Pollyanna on the Create and Craft channel! There will be over 150 Christmas card designs to choose from, including the latest charity cards for Guide dogs for the Blind, the RSPB, RNLI, RSPCA, The Wildlife Trusts, and Blue Cross among many others. Four new fine art calendars of her work will be available for 2016, along with diaries, eco-friendly wrapping paper and even Christmas crackers and decorations featuring her designs!
