“Hi, I'm Samarah at Smiling Mouse Designs, a local artist who paints on slate - a great alternative to traditional media, which gives my work a lovely natural feel and texture. I have always enjoyed art since I was a little girl, and I am inspired by the beauty of the British countryside, which is why my work all shares a sense of rural whimsy. Recently I have plucked up the courage to turn my art into starting my own small business! Alongside my slate art, and other works on traditional canvas, I also do design work and crafts, where I have created wedding display boards, table setting using calligraphy, and also display boxes. My work can be created specially for you, where I design and paint you a piece of art truly unique and personal”. breeze what’s on Riverside Drama Company present: Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare. Thursday 20th Saturday 22nd November (7.30pm) The Duchess Theatre, Chatsworth Centre, Long Eaton. Riverside Drama Company, veterans of high quality amateur productions, are putting on Much Ado About Nothing in conjunction The RSC’s Open Stages. As part of the biggest amateur theatre project in the UK, Open Stages is working with 100 theatre groups across the country including the East Midlands’ own Riverside Drama Company. Famed for its comic and dramatic suspense, Much Ado About Nothing is fundamentally a play of parallel love stories. Love and friendship bud and blossom only to unravel spectacularly at the hand of betrayal and jealousy. Claudio and Hero are rendered speechless by their feelings for each other. After falling head over heels in love this young, impetuous couple plan to marry immediately. What could possibly go wrong? Meanwhile, Beatrice and Benedick are entrenched in a witty war of words in which both proclaim their scorn for love, marriage and each other. The fact that the bantering pair are in denial of their attraction makes its blossoming all the more charming. No wonder they are celebrated as Shakespeare’s most loveable couple! This isn’t the first time that Riverside Drama have taken part in the RSC Open Stages Project. In 2012 they were one of a handful of groups selected to perform in a showcase in Manchester and subsequently went on to perform 'The Pocket Dream' in Stratford Upon Avon. Much Ado About Nothing is directed by Martin Holtom, comedic star of recent productions Time of My Life, End Of The Food Chain, and Twelfth Night. It has been magnificently cast and Riverside’s diverse and talented crew guarantee to charm and delight you with what many consider Shakespeare’s funniest and darkest comedy. On-stage at the Duchess Theatre, Chatsworth Centre, West Gate, Long Eaton Thursday 20th - Saturday 22nd November 2014 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7 (£6 concessions) and available online www.riversidedrama.com, at the Chatsworth Centre coffee mornings Sat 10-12am, or by phone on 0115 8756041 The group rehearse every Thursday night at Bramcote Church of England Primary School (7.30pm) and new members are always made welcome. Local Care Would you like to make a difference?……… Home Instead are delighted to have been revealed as England’s leading home care provider in a report from the UK’s leading healthcare information specialist, Laing & Buisson. The report, Laing & Buisson’s Care Compliance Monitor, includes headline data from Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection reports and presents a digested view of providers’ performance. “We are proud of our success and the fact that more and more people trust us with their support and care, or that of their relatives. We know that our ability to deliver consistent and person centred care is due to the fact that we have a passionate, committed and caring team of CAREGivers. Without each and every member of our team we would not be able to provide the support our Clients need and deserve. Our challenge is now to find additional CAREGivers who can help us continue our development in support of our mission to become the UK’s most admired Care Company through changing the face of ageing. We are looking for CAREGivers who can help us to assist people with non medical services including Companionship, Home Help and Personal Care in their own home. “If you are dedicated, have a caring and compassionate nature and a genuine desire to work in an environment where you will be helping others then please get in touch. We offer full training, depending on availability 10 to 20+ flexible working hours to include evening and weekends, excellent pay, healthcare cash plan and paid holidays. Own transport is desirable as part of our service includes taking Clients out”. “If you would like to apply or simply find out more about being a CAREGiver give us a ring or send us an email. Regardless of age, background or experience we would like to hear from you”. Please call 0115 9677303 or send an email to Lynda.Stevenson@homeinstead.co.uk

One of our CAREGivers was r e c e n t l y interviewed as part of a careers recruitment programme. When asked about the role, Katie who is 26, said; “I have regular clients and depending on my availability I work 20-24 hours a week, this is perfect for me as I have young children and I can fit work around them. Twice a week I take a lady who is 86 shopping, she loves going out and looking around the shops. Without me to assist her she wouldn’t be able to do that” Katie also said; “If you are thinking about becoming a CAREGiver I would say it is a very satisfying and rewarding job, it is not the job you first think it is, you walk away at the end of the week knowing you have made a difference to somebody’s life, who without you would not necessarily have the quality of life they want to have”

A Beeston man who lost nearly six stone in thirty three weeks and has run his first Marathon in eleven years is feeling on top of the world. Julian joined Slimming World with his wife Johanna, in August 2013 as they both wanted to lose weight to be able to be considered as kidney donors for daughter Danielle who has stage 5 kidney disease and is often looked after by the staff at the Renal Unit at Nottingham City Hospital. Julian said: “When the Saturday morning Slimming World group started locally in August it gave both Jo and I the kick start we needed to get in shape for being potential donors for Danielle as well as helping us to turn our lives around and become fitter, happier and healthier” The couple have lost over 8 stone between them and went through to the Semi Finals for Slimming Worlds Couple of the Year 2014 awards earlier in the year but their greatest prize through their weight loss is that Johanna now has the chance to begin tests to become a donor for Danielle. Julian said he was active in his twenties, and used to do a lot of running but he never dreamed he would be able to do that again now in his forties and even beat his old time by eleven seconds! He feels fitter than ever before, he thinks nothing about getting up early on a Saturday morning and going for a nine mile run before weigh in. “I am really enjoying being able to run again and it’s great that I can use something I enjoy to also raise money and awareness of the Renal Unit and the fantastic work that they do there. They take such fantastic care of Danielle whenever we are there that it’s great to be able to give something back” Julian raised £1200 and is already planning his next Marathon he has totally embraced Slimming Worlds Food Optimising plan and say’s “It doesn’t feel like a diet it’s a lifestyle change, you can still enjoy all your favourite foods in moderation and go for meals out and to birthday parties, nothing is banned and you never feel deprived. I’ve even started having a go at doing some of the cooking to!” Kerry Ward who run’s the Saturday Morning group at Queens Road Methodist Church in Beeston says “I couldn’t be prouder of Julian he has totally transformed his life from the man I remember walking through my doors in August 2013. He and Johanna are a true inspiration, it’s been a real pleasure to help them on their weight loss journey and the rest of the group love hearing how he is doing.”

Thinking of separating or divorcing but worried about cost?
1. Due to legal aid cuts, how can I afford to get divorced? We offer fixed fees for the majority of divorces so that you know in advance exactly how much it will cost and can budget accordingly. This is because if the Respondent does not reply or defends the divorce then the fixed fees would increase! Dependent upon your income, you may be able to apply for an exemption from the court fees. 2. Do you offer fixed fees? We can offer fixed fees in relation to some other matters such as children and property issues too. These will depend on the circumstances of your particular case. We realise that you need to know how much your case is going to cost and will give detailed estimates whenever possible. We will discuss your costs in detail at every step. 3. Would it be possible for me to pay in instalments or pay as I go? Either of these options are available. Form some people “pay as you go is an attractive idea. You may wish to represent yourself but need advice on specific aspects of your case as it proceeds. We are happy to offer this service. If you wish to instruct us more formally, monthly payments are something we can arrange in many cases. 4. What is mediation? Mediation allows separating couples to try to make decisions and reach agreement about the various aspects of their separation. Our specially trained mediator, Pat Sallis, supports and guides you through this process. Legal aid is still available for this subject to your financial situation. If you do not qualify for legal aid, the sessions are charged for separately. The number of sessions needed will vary from case to case. We offer a free 30 minute consultation in which we can discuss the different options available to you and give some initial advice.

breeze promotion TILL DEATH DO US PART: WHAT GETTING MARRIED CAN DO TO YOUR WILL Did you know that your Will is likely to be revoked when you get married? Saying “I do” can change your life in more than one way. With the endless stream of arrangements for the big day, the practical implications of getting married can often be overlooked when planning a wedding. It’s no surprise that perhaps one of the last things on their minds is the rather unromantic and morbid thought about the effect that marriage could have on their Wills – and that’s assuming that the future Mr and Mrs have previously made a Will at all! When couples marry, their new spouse takes priority. A Will that existed before the marriage is revoked and, if a new Will is not made, the happy couple could die intestate. The rules of intestacy are inflexible, providing only for the spouse and some blood relatives, although not necessarily the ones you are closest to. Failing to make a new Will after marriage could mean that most, if not all, of your assets are left to your new partner, with no regard for those you had named in your previous Will. This could be a particular problem if you have children from a previous relationship. With a swift “I do”, you could be chopping out step-children, or close friends and charities – all those that you really wanted to provide for after you’ve gone. Your new spouse could even remain entitled to your assets if you informally separate later in life! So does this mean that you have to run to your lawyer after the ceremony and before the reception? Fortunately, the law helps you to plan for marriage and you can make a special Will well before your wedding day. With proper legal advice, you can make a Will “in contemplation of marriage” and with correct and precise wording, your lawyer can help you ensure that your Will remains valid, helping you to put your mind at rest that your wishes will be followed should anything happen. Together with the Merry Men, Robin sets out on his greatest adventure so far! Comedy duo from the last two pantos have followed their dreams, as Laura Thurman makes a great premier as Silly Billy, Nurse Goodbody (The Dame)’s son and Liam Hall builds on his Drama degree by taking on the role of Assistant Director. The Baddie is the Horrible Sheriff of Nottingham, who is not shy of a bob or two, but has never thought of anyone but himself. Rob-Roy Toy Makers of Long Eaton have been making and selling wooden toys in and around Nottingham for over sixty years. Robin and wife Linda came to College street Long Eaton almost thirty years ago from their shop in Beeston. Many things have changed over the years, especially with the advent of the internet, but is still nice to come and feel the quality. Rob Roy Toys still make many of their own toys In their workshop and are proud to be one of the last toy makers In England. Most of the toys they sell are personalised with your child’s name. “We have a passion for wooden toys, whether it’s our own lovingly crafted ones or products from all over the world that we also stock.” Explains Robin You can be assured of the quality and safety of all the toys we sell as all of our wooden toys are passed to E.E.C. toy regulations and are safe for your child.” explains Robin. Giving a lovely wooden toy can be such a nice way to revisit the traditional feel of Christmas and also for birthdays of course with children who live by their tactile senses , they are delighted by the solid feel and textures of a wooden play item. “We find that for children the keepsake aspect of some of our toys and decorations is an additional aspect. A gift from a grandparent can be something to treasure when parents store it after it has been played with, for their own grandchildren perhaps” says Robin. Why not pop down where you will be most welcome to browse and ask any questions if you have any - a great way to get in the Christmas spirit! breeze what’s on A Nottingham Library Remembers: Bromley House Library and The First World War 1914 - 1918 Bromley House Library, on Angel Row in Nottingham, was pleased to be one of the early partners on the City and County ‘Trent to Trenches’ project, commemorating World War One. For both our talks and exhibition, we decided to focus on stories with a local connection, concentrating on the East Midlands, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, and more specifically Bromley House Library and its members. The exhibition has been made possible by the generosity and enthusiasm of the library’s members, who have offered to loan their precious photographs and mementoes, and to tell the ‘stories’ behind their families’ experience of the Great War. It will be displayed in the Bromley House Gallery and in the main reading rooms, and will include two and three dimensional objects and artefacts, displayed alongside photographic images of those involved in the war – many of whom lost their lives. The exhibition will be open to the public every Wednesday from 10:30am - 03:00pm10.30am – 4pm. Until 17th December. “We have a diverse programme of subjects and speakers for our Saturday lectures (£5.00 pp) and Wednesday lunchtime talks, which we are also opening up to the public”. The talks on Wednesdays are free but tickets need to be reserved in advance. For further information about the programme and reserving tickets please contact Geraldine.gray@bromleyhouse.org, or phone 0115 947 3134, consult our website www.bromleyhouse.org or just pop in! We do hope you will be able to visit in the autumn.

Winter Salads... Plan ahead for winter by growing a range of crops so that even when the weather is bleak, there’s something tasty to harvest and add those all important fresh nutrients to your diet. You may be surprised to learn that fresh salad can be grown through the winter – in the garden or in a window box. You could be picking fresh leaves to garnish your Christmas dinner if you follow our growing guide, as well as have some gardening Tatisfaction of course! Winter salad The growing methods used are very similar to ones used back in summer but with some alterations to account for the colder weather as you might expect. Choose the hardy varieties of your favourite summer lettuce. You may wish to experiment with more unusual winter salad crops such as Texsel greens and salad

burnet. For a continuous supply, sow a few seeds every four weeks. Seedlings will simply freeze if left standing in pools of water so good drainage is vital. Grow in a sheltered, sunny position as it's important that the seedlings are protected from cold winter winds (remember our article on sheltering?) Soil preparation Choose a sheltered sunny spot in the garden and dig the soil over, mixing in well-rotted manure or garden compost to add nutrients and help the soil retain moisture. Rake it to leave a fine finish. Container growing Ideal for sunny patios or smaller gardens or even a balcony! Prepare your container mix using a mix of plain potting compost and John Innes. Use a window box or pot - both are equally useful. Sowing: Sow up to mid-November (so get cracking this weekend!). If you keep up regular sowings this will ensure that you have a
continuous crop. Sow your seeds in short, shallow rows, cover with soil, label and water. That’s it! Then we look to keep them growing through the early winter months... (continues...)

breezegardening (continued...) If a sharp dip in temperature is predicted (particularly overnight), look at covering your seeds with a cloche or fleece to protect them - you can use any flexible wire or small gauge tubing to form the familiar small tunnel shape - look around and try some innovation of your own - it makes it more fun! You can buy ready made cloches inexpensively if you simply don’t have time to experiment but do consider it in future as it adds to your hobby to recycle and really fits with the ethos of gardening in many ways. Care of your winter salads Keep the soil just moist but ensure that your seedlings do not get too cold or wet. Do keep an eye on the weather forecast and protect your seedlings if a frost is predicted as described above. Harvesting your hard work! Harvest the leaves from cut-and-come again lettuces (they regrow, hence their name) when plants are about 5cm high, or you can allow the plants to grow to about 15cm and cut the whole head off leaving a 3cm stump - a new plant should soon re-sprout. Growing tips Winter salads usually have a strong, robust flavour that can sometimes be a little bitter for some tastes (although this can also be a very nice counter when used with a sweeter dressing such a s raspberry based one). If you do find that your salad leaves are too bitter for you then try blanching the leaves, not using hot water for a few seconds as in cooking but by covering the plants with an upturned flowerpot. Left like this for a few days before harvesting, the leaves will become paler and less bitter as they react to the lack of light.

Here are some you may wish to try - go on and give it a go - you must have a spare large pot somewhere! Try these winter salads These are amongst the most hardy 'summer' lettuces, and salad leaves which are really at their best in winter. Get growing a few of each for a variety of tastes: Lettuce 'Arctic King' - large 'butterhead' lettuce is light green, crunchy and exceptionally hardy. For best results sow under glass if you can (we have covered quick and easy coldframes before). Lettuce 'Valdor' - dark green lettuce with a tight core of leaves and is very hardy. Ready for picking 10-12 weeks later. Texsel Greens - also known as Ethiopian greens, this fast-growing salad plant taste similar to spinach and can be used in the same way. Radicchio 'Treviso Precoce Mesola' - will produce deep maroon leaves - often associated with radicchio. Endive 'CanCan' - a frisee-type of lettuce and tough enough to survive the winter outside in milder areas or under some protection in cooler climates. Winter Purslane - hardy, green and tasty, a lovely salad throughout the winter 'Golden Purslane' - the more glamorous relative of regular winter purslane. The red stems of 'Golden Purslane' contrast visually against the golden leaves and will brighten up your salad bowl. As always - just try something new like this if you haven’t already and learn as you go - it’s all part of gardening so... Enjoy!

breeze promotion DOES YOUR PET HAVE DIABETES? WOULD YOU KNOW? November is Pet Diabetes Month. Churchcroft Vets have joined forces with one of the leading veterinary medicine manufacturers to help raise awareness of Diabetes in dogs and cats. As with people, untreated Diabetes has serious consequences for the health of the affected pet. Dogs and cats can go blind from cataracts or blood pressure related vision problems when Diabetes occurs. The cataracts can occur incredibly quickly in dogs with devastating consequences. In extreme cases dogs can lapse into a coma and this is life threatening. Most affected pets will be drinking more water but studies show that this is only noticed in about half of the pets diagnosed with Diabetes. Signs can be more subtle, for example weight loss or even just a little weakness of the back legs may be the only symptoms. During Pet Diabetes Month Churchcroft Vets will test your pet’s urine for sugar, for free. This simple test is a great way of checking for the possibility of Diabetes. In any animals over 7 it is wise to have this checked at regular intervals. At Churchcroft, George the head vet says “Regular testing is really the only way to be sure your pet does not have Diabetes. I have seen a dog in a diabetic coma and the owner was a doctor who was a Diabetes Specialist! Since he missed the signs I think we all can.” So, during November, take a sample of your pet’s urine to Churchcroft and they will test it on the spot and let you know immediately if there is any sign of Diabetes. It’s simple, quick and free so act now! Churchcroft are also supplying home test kits for anyone who would find home testing easier. Churchcroft are open to test samples from 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday and from 8.30am to 12.30pm on Saturdays. If you have any further queries about the scheme, call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855

ARIES [March 21st-April 20th] Bringing one situation under control appears easier than you thought possible especially when you make it clear how you feel. Expectations of someone close prove you were right in the first place. Making those important changes in one area of your life seems impossible until you make the initial move then all slots into place.
CANCER [June 22nd-July 23rd] Settling down into some kind of routine may become difficult but pays off. Taking more control of your life helps others to cope with any pressure. Love and romance is most certainly around and should you play your cards right helps others too. Looking through items and having a good old sort out helps you come to terms with the past.
LIBRA [Sept24th-October 22nd] Standing firm and not allowing anyone to make decisions for you makes you feel better and in control of what belongs to you. Taking time out to put right what you felt was wrong pays off. Any tension between loved ones soon passes when plans are put into action. Checking instructions before putting items together saves embarrassment.
TAURUS [April 21st-May 20th] You may at some stage feel the whole world is against you when things don’t go your way. However taking everything into consideration helps you see how far you have come and just what you have achieved. Any disgruntlement with friends or neighbours is soon forgotten with a helping hand when needed. Catch up time.
LEO [July 24th-August 23rd] Lack of communication could make one special relationship difficult when eventually meeting up. But with your charismatic charm and sense of humour you soon put things right. Finances could well get a boost when least expected making all you’re hard work worthwhile. More confidants in your abilities you go ahead with plans.
SCORPIO [Oct23rd-Nov22nd] Exciting moments when meeting up with one person you haven’t seen for some time. Stronger and wiser you make sure no one takes you for granted. Changing direction with work and learning new skills pays off long term. Celebrations get under way which enable you to catch up with all the gossip. News of a birth then a marriage.
GEMINI [May 21st-June 21st] Things become rather hectic when least expected with one person making demands of your spare time. New relationships develop into something special and you’re not likely to let anyone spoil things either. Searching for new ideas gets the creative juices flowing with a positive outcome by the end of the month. A time for reflection.
VIRGO [August 24th-Sept23rd] Trying to divide your time between family and friends may prove difficult especially when needs need to be met. Saving some time for yourself you make the most of a short break, which enables you to recharge your batteries. An admirer is not too far away and is likely to make themselves known. Social invitations soon come your way.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23rd-Dec 22nd] Not able to sorting matters out which are important to you but not others frustrates you. Through this any strain in relationships are dealt with together. Travelling a little more than you wish helps another become more independent with a sigh of relief. Ideas for future gains likely. With encouragement and a positive outcome at the end.
breezemagazine 42
CAPRICORN [Dec 23rdJan20th] With new and exciting challenges in store for November your ready for action. Taking stock of what you have already achieved in terms of success brings you more confidence in reaching those goals much quicker Emotions get the better of you at some stage during this month but you soon take control and move forward. AQUARIUS [Jan 21st- Feb19th] Any pressure felt recently tends to ease giving you more time and space to do your own thing. Younger members of the family keep you well occupied and have you running around in circles. Overspending likely when treating yourself to something special. News from afar brings a smile to your face and something to look forward to. PISCES [February 20th-March 20th] Stronger and wiser you begin the month as you mean to go on. Sorting out any minor problems first thing. There appears to be a question mark regarding someone close. Given time all will be revealed putting your mind at rest. Promises made could well be kept. No longer being taken for granted you make plans, which please another.
