breeze what’s on This autumn, Long Eaton Operatic Society brings the dramatic musical West Side Story with its spectacular dance sequences to Long Eaton audiences. Famously inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is set in the Upper West Side neighbourhood in New York City in the mid-1950s. The musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The young protagonist, Tony, one of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. The dark themes, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social problems marked a turning point in American musical theatre and makes for exciting and entertaining viewing. Bernstein's fantastic score for the musical includes memorable songs such as Something's Coming, Maria, America, Somewhere, Tonight and I Feel Pretty. Come and see it from Tuesday 28th October to Saturday 1st November at Trent College, Long Eaton starting at 7.30pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets are available from our Box Office Manager on 01332 874352 or 07753 353417: £10 stalls and £12 balcony (£8 concessions matinee only) or book online at leos.ticketsource.co.uk. TILL DEATH DO US PART: WHAT GETTING MARRIED CAN DO TO YOUR WILL Did you know that your Will is likely to be revoked when you get married? Saying “I do” can change your life in more than one way. With the endless stream of arrangements for the big day, the practical implications of getting married can often be overlooked when planning a wedding. It’s no surprise that perhaps one of the last things on their minds is the rather unromantic and morbid thought about the effect that marriage could have on their Wills – and that’s assuming that the future Mr and Mrs have previously made a Will at all! When couples marry, their new spouse takes priority. A Will that existed before the marriage is revoked and, if a new Will is not made, the happy couple could die intestate. The rules of intestacy are inflexible, providing only for the spouse and some blood relatives, although not necessarily the ones you are closest to. Failing to make a new Will after marriage could mean that most, if not all, of your assets are left to your new partner, with no regard for those you had named in your previous Will. This could be a particular problem if you have children from a previous relationship. With a swift “I do”, you could be chopping out step-children, or close friends and charities – all those that you really wanted to provide for after you’ve gone. Your new spouse could even remain entitled to your assets if you informally separate later in life! So does this mean that you have to run to your lawyer after the ceremony and before the reception? Fortunately, the law helps you to plan for marriage and you can make a special Will well before your wedding day. With proper legal advice, you can make a Will “in contemplation of marriage” and with correct and precise wording, your lawyer can help you ensure that your Will remains valid, helping you to put your mind at rest that your wishes will be followed should anything happen. slimmers race for cancer charity
breeze advertorial
Slimmers from Beeston, Chilwell, Bramcote, Wollaton and Dunkirk raised money for a leading cancer charity when they held a Slimming World does Race for Life Event at Wollaton Park last month The group of women and men are all members from the area’s Slimming World groups and held their own 5K event to raise money for Cancer Research UK, the organisation’s charity partner throughout 2014. The group welcomed the people of Beeston and surrounding areas to join in, and saw over eighty people take part, along with lots of spectators who supported the entrants across the finish line. Kerry W, Margaret, Louise, Gemma and Kerry M who run the local groups around Beeston say members loved holding their own Slimming World Race for Life event. “It was a fantastic event with a real feel-good atmosphere. We saw young, old, male and female participants enter the event, with a range of different abilities and fitness levels. Entrants could run, walk, cycle or skate across the finish line – whatever they wanted – as long as they crossed the finish line we didn’t mind at all! “We are so pleased with how much we raised for Cancer Research UK and I think the event showed people just how motivating being part of a group can be. Every penny raised will go towards an amazing cause – helping Cancer Research UK to fund pioneering, life-saving research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all cancers. One in three people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, and research has shown that many types of cancer are more common in people who are overweight. Cancer touches so many people’s lives and at Slimming World
we’re determined to do anything we can to help people lead healthier lives in whatever way possible. All the Slimming World groups from the area got right behind this event and encouraged others to do the same.” The aim of Slimming World does Race for Life is to raise money for charity while raising awareness about the benefits of getting active, including increasing energy levels, reducing stress, building self-esteem, improving health and helping to maintain a healthy weight. Having an active lifestyle also reduces the risk of developing a range of health conditions including some types of cancer. Nikala a member who has lost over five stone says: “I walked the event with my daughter in memory of my friends and family that have been affected by cancer. It’s a cause very close to my heart and I found the event a heartwarming and touching experience. I used to really struggle with exercise, and found it really daunting taking those first steps to becoming more active. With Slimming World I learnt that the key is to start small and find something that you enjoy doing, and I’ve found that’s the best way to keep active and lose weight at the same time. There’s no rule that says being active has to involve a gym or running shorts – walking to collect my children from school or hitting the dance floor on a night out is enough to compliment my weight loss beautifully. I definitely wouldn’t have entered a distance race before I found Slimming World, but since losing weight I’m feeling much healthier, happier and more confident – I’m so proud of myself and I know my friends and family are too.”

“My alarm goes off at 6.30am which allows me time to get my teenage boys ready for the day, have breakfast and head to the clinic. I like to get to work about half an hour before I start so I can read through the notes of each patient. We see such a mixture of patients that no day is the same. I could see an elderly lady with arthritis followed by a young gentleman training for a marathon, with a completely different set of demands from his body. We treat people with many different problems and it it this variety that I love. We can help low back pain, neck pain and depending on the cause we can also help people suffering with headaches, tendonopathies and trapped nerves. At lunchtime my colleagues and I get chance to discuss any challenging cases and we often put our heads together to get the best outcome for the patient. It is quite physical work with the manipulation and massage so after work I like to relax with the family and enjoy singing”. A 350 YEAR DOUBLE GLAZING SECRET “My name is Martin Brown and I specialize in UPVC Double Glazing Maintenance replacing only the faulty parts not the complete windows or doors. Double Glazed Window frames are made from PVC-U a rigid form of plastic. The 'U' means Unplasticised, PVC is plasticised, for example shower curtains are made of PVC. PVC-U is not as soft or as bendy as shower curtains, although it’s still a little springy which is why your window and door frames look chunky; they have to be for strength. The secret of good quality PVC-U window or door frames is that they have a life expectancy of around 35+ years and can be recycled 10 times, giving a total usable frame life span of 350 years. However not everything lasts forever and some maintenance will be required usually to the moving parts or double glazed glass units, Condensation or Mist can build up inside the glass units, Hinges, Handles, Locks, Window and Door Locking mechanisms wear out or stop working. Thinking of separating or divorcing but worried about cost?
1. Due to legal aid cuts, how can I afford to get divorced? We offer fixed fees for the majority of divorces so that you know in advance exactly how much it will cost and can budget accordingly. This is because if the Respondent does not reply or defends the divorce then the fixed fees would increase! Dependent upon your income, you may be able to apply for an exemption from the court fees. 2. Do you offer fixed fees? We can offer fixed fees in relation to some other matters such as children and property issues too. These will depend on the circumstances of your particular case. We realise that you need to know how much your case is going to cost and will give detailed estimates whenever possible. We will discuss your costs in detail at every step. 3. Would it be possible for me to pay in instalments or pay as I go? Either of these options are available. Form some people “pay as you go” is an attractive idea. You may wish to represent yourself but need advice on specific aspects of your case as it proceeds. We are happy to offer this service. If you wish to instruct us more formally, monthly payments are something we can arrange in many cases. 4. What is mediation? Mediation allows separating couples to try to make decisions and reach agreement about the various aspects of their separation. Our specially trained mediator, Pat Sallis, supports and guides you through this process. Legal aid is still available for this subject to your financial situation. If you do not qualify for legal aid, the sessions are charged for separately. The number of sessions needed will vary from case to case. We offer a free 30 minute consultation in which we can discuss the different options available to you and give some initial advice.

Hello, My Name is Sam Blacklock and I'm one of the Sons and Daughter that now run Blacklock Carpets, Which was originally run by our parents Roger and Christine Blacklock. We struggled through but never forgot about him, ever after all this time. Our business has grown in size with time and in support locally so this year to raise awareness in heart problems and support this killer in all ways, I have decided to run the Nottingham Robin Hood Half Marathon on Sunday 28th September 2014 to raise sponsorship for the nations heart charity The British Heart Foundation (BHF) by myself running the event, so I'm currently in training with it covering some 13 miles of our city I need to! breeze what’s on THE AWARD WINNING PEOPLE'STHEATRE COMPANY, NOTTINGHAM PROUDLY PRESENT ‘A TASTE OF HONEY’ A Taste of Honey was the first play by the British dramatist Shelagh Delaney, written in 1958 when she was 18. It was at first intended as a novel, but was turned it into a play because Shelagh felt she might be able to revitalise British theatre and address social issues that she in her opinion were not being presented. The play was adapted into an award-winning film in 1961 with the same title. A Taste of Honey is set in Salford in North West England in the 1950s. The story focuses around Jo, a seventeenyear-old working class teenager, and her mother, Helen, who is presented as crude and sexually indiscriminate. Helen leaves Jo alone in their new flat after she begins a relationship with Peter, a rich lover who is younger than her. Helen is always happy when she has a feller and only comes to check on Jo when she’s sad and without a feller. Coincidently Jo begins a romantic relationship with Jimmy, a black sailor at the same time. He proposes marriage to Jo, but then is called up to go to sea, leaving Jo pregnant and on her own. She finds lodgings with a homosexual acquaintance, Geoffrey, who assumes the role of surrogate father and cares for Jo. Helen returns after a fall out with her lover and the future of Jo's new home is put into doubt.

A Taste of Honey comments on, and puts into question, class, race, gender and sexual orientation in midtwentieth-century Britain. The play was seen as revolutionising British theatre at the time. The cast is only very small, but they are bonding very well and are really excited about getting this play on stage at the Nottingham Arts Theatre. Pre rehearsal warm ups consist of practising their Manchurian accents and also having a good pretend battle of words to get into character, especially Deborah and Amy who play mother and daughter in this captivating play. breeze what’s on An opportunity to meet the author of ‘I have seen God’ - a Book describing how a German doctor and his wife, also a doctor, dedicated their lives ten years ago to the creation of a modern hospital in the Peruvian Andes to serve the impoverished Inca Indians of the area. Doctor John will be in the UK for the launch of his book from 4th September to the end of the month. He will be in Nottingham speaking at Bramcote Parish Church on the 11th Sept (7.30pm) and at Beeston Rotary Club on 15th September (Beeston Fields Golf Club, 7.00pm).
DIOSPI SUYANA “What on earth is that?” you may well ask. It’s what an Inca Indian high in the Peruvian Andes of South America might well say when he or she sees a huge hospital nestling in a valley with a church and an amphitheatre. Diospi Suyana means “I have seen God” and this hospital is the result of a vision which a German doctor and his wife had some ten years ago after graduating and wanting to put their skills to use for a third world community. The hospital was opened in 2007 by the wife of the President of Peru and since then has treated more than 138,000 patients. The extraordinary fact about the hospital is that literally every-thing has been donated - from scalpels to scanners, from generators to stained glass windows and nurses to navvies. How this happened is the subject of a best-selling book written by that German doctor, Dr Klaus – Dieter John. Dr John will be at St Michael’s, Bramcote on Thursday the 11th September, 7.30pm, as part of his tour of the UK to launch the book. Why not go along to hear the story of the Diospi Suyana Hospital in the Andes from a truly inspirational speaker. There is no charge. For more information visit www.diospi-suyana.de

The leader (Adrian) is good fun, knowledgeable and takes us on interesting rides. He also gives us lots of information which is relevant to our cycling, and the rest of the group gel well and help each other out. Saturday sessions are run by popular local instructor, Paul Gregg, who as well as being a cycle instructor, also works as a Dr Bike carrying out basic maintenance on bikes a and delivers fun family cycle training.

Autumn Winds The weather will tend to get cooler and gustier with the days becoming noticeably shorter now. Let’s plan to get the most from our Autumn gardening! If you started a fruit or vegetable patch, you can enjoy reaping the rewards of harvest; Blackberries should be ripe and plump now and make for delicious uses in pies, jams and just on their own. They should stay intact when you pick them as when ripe they fall apart. Did you plant a fruiting tree when we covered that in one of our previous issues? Well, you may just be one of our readers who are seeing sweet tasting plums just ready for picking about now if you did! You can of course plant one ready for another season - even large containers will suffice if the tree is planted properly. See our Feb issue online!

Don’t sit there feeling glum about the ‘end of summer’ - get out and start planting spring-flowering bulbs for next year! With your knowledge so far gained it’s a good time to look at the seed catalogues (online) to plan next summer's colour. We seem set for more warm weather yet so still a good time to sit and enjoy the shrubs you planted just for this time of year. Why not plant out some for next year? Try these: • Callicarpa bodinieri (Beautyberry Profusion) • Euonymus europaeus (Spindle Red Cascade) • Hippophae rhamnoides ‘Leikora’ (Sea buckthorn) • Viburnum davidii (David Viburnum) (continues...)

To sow directly into the ground here is what you do:
Either use broadcasting (scattering seed over the soil surface) or drilling (sowing more precisely in rows). No matter which method you choose, prepare the soil bed for the best results and here is how to do that: • Make sure the area to be sown is weed-free • Dig over the soil to a spade’s depth, rake it over and firm. • Plan the area to be sown by sprinkling grit or sand on the soil or score the ground with a cane to mark out sowing areas. Decide what should go where according to height, habit and flower colour. • It is important not to sow into a soil that is too rich, since this may encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers, - avoid using fertiliser. Looking forward to the future, this is a good time of year to plant new perennials, especially towards the end of September, as the soil is still warm, but moisture levels are increasing. Examples are Salvias, Foxglove, Verbenas and Geraniums. All bring colour to your garden throughout the growing seasons and are a robust way to keep interest in your little patch going. Don’t forget to prune back fading ones though so they will be ready to reflower next year. If you have your hanging baskets still out (which you should!) by keeping deadheading them and watering/feeding them you can squeeze out the maximum colour. Planning ahead why not plant out some Hardy Annuals around now ready for next spring? The time to plant for flowers next autumn would be in the spring time so, again, plan ahead if you feel your Autumn garden could do with a touch more colour.
breezemagazine 36
Broadcast seeding: Scatter seed thinly over the plots and cover lightly with soil or compost. Aim for a gap of about 0.5cm between the seeds. Water well with a watering can fitted with a fine rose. Drilling seed: Dividing the bed into irregular patches and sowing into drills (shallow grooves) running in offset directions gives a more natural appearance as plants mature. Space drills 15–45cm apart (dependent on the eventual size of the plants). Sow seeds 0.5cm apart in each ‘drill’ and rake soil over the drills to cover them. Water well with a watering can fitted with a fine rose. As a precaution, beds can be covered with horticultural fleece during cold snaps. There! Always something to look forward to in the garden so keep at it and keep learning and most of all keep trying! As always though - Enjoy!

Dodge dog breath and prevent plaque, September is PET DENTAL CARE MONTH at Churchcroft Vets.
Are you in the 1% of pet owners who regularly check their pets’ teeth? If not, this is the time to act. Throughout September, Churchcroft Vets are checking all pets’ teeth FOR FREE! There will also be a massive discount of at least 33% on the cost of any treatment required. Nearly all of us ignore what is going on in our best friend’s mouth unless a problem there becomes so severe that it cannot be overlooked. However, there are many reasons why a regular check is a great idea: It may turn out that there are sore gums or teeth that you were not aware of. In this case these can be treated to get your precious pet comfortable again ASAP. It may be that there are the beginnings of tooth disease which will cause tooth destruction. In this case a quick procedure can stop this progressing to pain and discomfort and keep everything in great shape. Hopefully the check will reveal that your pet has perfect dental health. If so, the Churchcroft team will discuss with you how to maintain everything in good order. Teeth do not look after themselves! Apart from avoiding unnecessary suffering, other benefits of dental attention include getting rid of smelly breath and preventing disease that may shorten your pet’s life. Call Churchcroft on 0115 922 4855 to arrange your FREE dental check up.

ARIES [March 21st-April 20th] Certainly a mixed bag with plenty to do for September. Stronger and wiser and no longer suffering fools easily you get cracking organising and being in control of what is going on around. With a thirst for knowledge enquiries are likely to be made to enhance any skills you may have already. An admirer comes into your life suddenly.
CANCER [June 22nd-July 23rd] With so much going off in your life and hardly a moment to spare organisation becomes the key to achieving goals for the month. Lost in the moment you arrange days and times for a meeting. However don’t be surprised if you have to either cancel or re-arrange. Being taken to places of interest and steeped in history has you thinking
LIBRA [Sept 24th-October 22nd] As you like balance and harmony in your life you take time out assessing one situation your not happy to be in. Taking time out does the trick and with peace of mind decisions to bring back the balance goes ahead. Tempers flair for a short time but you surface with good results from a meeting. Family meet up for special events.
TAURUS [April 21st-May 20th] Doing your best isn’t good enough for someone not too far away. With the support of loved ones you change tactics giving them some of their own medicine. Putting the finishing touches to something special either within or just outside the home makes you feel good and your able to allow your creative abilities to just take over at last.
LEO [July 24th-August 23rd] A busy month but one in which you can fulfil any ambitions already in the pipeline. You don’t mind being taken for granted with good reason but not in a way that one person gains yet leaving you out in the cold. A time for celebrations arrives when meeting up with family or friends not seen for a while. Changes in routine pay off,
SCORPIO [Oct 23rd-Nov22nd] Having been let down in some way recently your determined your not going down that path again. Realising only too well that those you love and trust are worth their weight in gold. Ideas for boosting the money pot come to light when another puts interesting ideas forward. You save the day when realising one friend feels down.
GEMINI [May 21st-June 21st] Whatever you seem to say or do is wrong. Treading on eggshells no longer you stand firm when dealing with people who treat you unfairly. Romance doesn’t seem too far away for the single its just recognising the signs and not ignoring them. Taking time for others pays off especially when you have moments to spare. Lost items found.
VIRGO [August 24th-Sept23rd] A bit of a giving month where someone close to you has priority. Making sure all is in order your happy when things come to a close. Moving in the direction of your choice and supported by loved ones you excel in something completely different to what you have been used to. The giving and receiving of gifts likely pleasing all.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov23rd-Dec 22nd] It seems for a day or so you cant do right for doing wrong. Standing up for yourself doesn’t go down well but you certainly give someone something to think about. Some Turn around in the home whether it be decorating or otherwise puts a smile on your face. Organising a get together may prove difficult when someone lets you down.
breezemagazine 42
CAPRICORN [Dec 23rd-January 20th] You have plenty to occupy your mind with for the month ahead. A few days when your feeling low somewhat steps in and the positivity in you comes shining through. Saying goodbye isn’t easy but this could be for a short time only. Putting your name on the dotted line may well mean, adding to new and interesting skills for the future. AQUARIUS [Jan 21st-Feb 19th] Partnerships may come to a cross road when one person disagrees with what you put forward to them. Stronger and more determined than ever you give yourself a time limit on reaching one particular outcome. Keeping up to date with important paperwork brings a sigh of relief. Health conscious you change a habit of a lifetime. PISCES [Feb 20th-March 20th] Having had a busy time recently and being torn in all directions you make decisions, which you feel are right for you at this present time. No longer interested in what others have to say you put your best foot forward and just get on with life in general. Travelling a little more and with muck and mess around for most a busy month indeed

ANDREW WHITE BECOMES A LIFE SHAVER FOR CHILDREN’S CANCER CHARITY CLIC SARGENT A bold principal of a local Dance School will be making a buzz when he has his head shaved to raise money for CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people and their families. Andrew White – Principal of Bare Feet Dance and Drama, will be getting up close and personal with the hair clippers and will be having his head shaved. It is all part of CLIC Sargent’s Big Buzz Campaign, which encourages people to become a “life-shaver” to support children and young people with cancer, many of whom lose their hair during treatment. Andrew said: “I’m shaving my head for CLIC Sargent because the children at the school wanted to raise money for the charity and as I always take ages doing my hair for shows and exams they thought it would be a really funny challenge for me to have my head shaved. “I feel nervous about the head shave but children and young people being treated for cancer don’t have a choice about losing their hair. I know the money is going to a fantastic cause in CLIC Sargent and that is what’s inspiring me to go through with it. “I am hoping to raise (£150) to help children and young people who are coping with cancer.” For more information about CLIC Sargent’s Big Buzz Campaign visit www.clicsargent.org.uk/bigbuzz

breeze appeal Ruth Langsford urges Nottinghamshire residents to fight dementia together
Ruth Langsford, presenter of ITV’s This Morning and Loose Women, is asking Nottinghamshire residents to put on their walking shoes and take part in Memory Walk 2014, Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest annual fundraiser. The Nottinghamshire Memory Walk will take place on Saturday 20th September at Wollaton Park. Ruth is encouraging families and individuals from Nottinghamshire to step out for a few hours and raise money to help support people with dementia and their carers. Walkers will be entertained by the Boots Band and various fundraising stalls making it a fun day out for the whole family. Ruth, who is an Alzheimer’s Society Ambassador will be walking for her Dad, Dennis. She said: ‘I take part in Memory Walk every year as a tribute to my wonderful Dad, who had dementia for 17 years and passed away in 2012. Raising funds for Alzheimer’s Society is vital to help support people living with dementia and their carers today and to fund research to find a cure once and for all. ‘I’ve done the walks in rain and shine and they’re always lovely, because you’re united by a common cause. I would encourage everyone in Nottinghamshire to sign up to Memory Walk today and bring the whole family along to share the experience.’ Danielle Hindle, Community Fundraiser from Alzheimer’s Society in Nottinghamshire said: ‘Memory Walk is a day to walk, share and celebrate someone special. From a four year old to their 80 year old gran and her dog Memory Walk sees whole families coming together to fight dementia. There will be an array of food stalls to choose from and we are very lucky to have members of the Boots Band performing, making it a great day out for everyone who takes part.’ To register for the Memory Walk visit memorywalk.org.uk /nottingham
