County accepts emergency grant funds to place beach sand
On Jan 17, the Lee County Board of County Commissioners voted to accept grant funds of $5 m i l l i o n f r o m t h e F l o r i d a D e p a r t m e n t o f E n v i r o n m e n t a l Protection for Hurricane Ian and Nicole Emergency Recovery to place sand on Lee County beaches
The state allocated $5 million for the beach and dune sand placement The county reported that the allocation will help provide storm protection and recreational benefits along the publicly accessible and heavily used beaches eroded by Ian
The project consists of trucking sand to beaches designated by the s t a t e a s c r i t i c a l l y e r o d e d a n d actively managed by the county to protect public infrastructure at risk from hurricane impacts Currently permitted locations include: south of Blind Pass, where the severely e r o d e d b e a c h t h r e a t e n s t h e Sanibel-Captiva Road evacuation route; and on Lovers Key, where a breach threatens the access bridge presented at the time of the purchase
Acceptable proof of residency or property ownership include: ∫
Driver’s license with a Sanibel address ∫
Valid government issued photo identification card with a Sanibel address ∫
Lee County voter registration card with a Sanibel address ∫ Tax bill with the homestead exemption for the Sanibel property that the owner owns ∫ Tax bill with the property ownership on Sanibel
∫ Notarized declaration of domicile listing a Sanibel residence
