Award-winning anti-plastic activist to speak at refuge
From Texas shrimp boat captain to anti-microplastic activist, author and environmentalist Diane Wilson fought a mega-corporation and won multiple awards for her work saving Gulf of Mexico waters
She will speak about “One Woman's Fight to Save Our Waters from Microplastic Pollution” at her free lectures on March 7 at 10 a m and 1 p m at the J N “Ding”
Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel
When Wilson learned in 1989 that the waters she fished as a fourth-generation shrimper led the nation for toxic waste, she set off a series of actions against a multibillion-dollar corporation that had been covering up spills, silencing workers, flouting the U S Environmental Protection Agency and dumping lethal
ethylene dichloride and vinyl chloride into the bays along the Gulf coast of Texas
Wilson took her fight to the courts, to the gates of the chemical plant and to the halls of power in Austin. Along the way, she met scorn, bribery, character assassination and death threats as she resorted to nonviolent disobedience, direct action and hunger strikes
Wilson wrote about her struggles in her book, “An Unreasonable Woman: A True Story of Shrimpers, Politicos, Polluters, and the Fight for Seadrift, Texas,” and was the

‘Ding’ cartoon of the month
By 1938, Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling had been a professional political observer for decades and had become wary of political promises, particularly where conservation was concerned Not a lot has changed in the political field since he penned this “Don’t Say It Sign It!” cartoon As the three-ring circus known as election campaigning starts to heat up, keep in mind Darling’s advice to “get it in writing” where it pertains to wildlife conservation. He went on to see to the preservation of Sanibel’s wetlands and the establishment of the Sanibel National Wildlife Refuge in 1945 After his death in 1962, locals petitioned to have it renamed the J N “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, the first national wildlife refuge named for a person The “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge owns the copyright of the “Ding” Darling cartoons REFUGE/DDWS

RSW official predicts airport’s future at chamber luncheon
On the heels of milestone achievements for the Southwest Florida International Airport, Lee County Port
Executive Officer Benjamin R Siegel revealed airport improvements through 2028 and beyond at the SanCap Chamber of Commerce's monthly business luncheon on Feb 21 at the Sanibel Harbour Marriott Resort & Spa in Fort Myers
Having passed the 10 million-passenger milestone and scored the busiest December in airport history in 2023 despite Hurricane Ian's impact the LCPA carries on with its three-phrase, multimillion-dollar projects to con-
tinue to meet growth and high-season demands, Siegel said. The phase one, $331 million terminal expansion project currently underway will consolidate the airport's three checkpoints into one, giving all passengers access to all restaurant and retail facilities, which will greatly expand
“By the end of the day, you’re going to have a whole new experience,” he said, emphasizing no property taxes will be used to fund the projects
Phase two will add 14 gates to Concourse E Targeted for completion in 2027, it is estimated to cost $800 million Project three will improve and expand rental car facil-

SCCF: Meet Sanibel’s sea turtle stars of 2023
T h e S a n i b e l - C a p t i v a C o n s e r v a t i o n F o u n d a t i o n reported that the sea turtle team has been busy analyzing the nesting data collected last summer, including data from the nighttime sea turtle tagging project
From May through July, the nighttime tagging team conducts beach patrols on Sanibel in search of nesting turtles Each turtle is tagged with flipper tags and a microchip called a Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tag if they do not have one The team chooses a theme each year for “naming” newly tagged turtles, and the theme for 2023 was female musicians
“These tags allow us to track an individual’s nesting and movement patterns, so we can learn more about sea turtles’ reproductive behavior and identify trends,” sea turtle biologist Savannah Weber said
Along with nighttime tagging data, the team also assesses the hatch success percent of the nest that hatched for each nest to estimate how many hatchlings were produced from that individual’s nest
Weber, who oversees the nighttime tagging project, shared some stories about some of the most unforgettable turtles encountered on Sanibel in 2023
Most encountered
Sea turtles typically nest anywhere from two to seven times during a nesting season, and generally return to nest every two to three years
“The nesting process can take anywhere from one to three hours, and not every turtle is encountered by our nighttime team,” she said “The majority of sea turtles that nest on Sanibel are loggerheads, so it’s no surprise that the two turtles we encountered the most in 2023 were both loggerheads ”
The first one, Pat Benatar, was first encountered by the team in 2023 She was observed nesting twice and false crawling coming ashore without laying eggs six times
“Unfortunately, one of her nests was depredated by coyotes, but the other nest had an 84 8% hatch success, resulting in 56 hatchlings making it to the ocean,” Weber said
The other turtle was Cyphoma named after the sea snail shell who was first tagged on Sanibel in 2016 and encountered again in 2020. This past season, the SCCF observed her nesting six times and false crawling twice
“Unfortunately, some of her nests exhibited low hatch success due to coyote depredation and washovers from Hurricane Idalia,” she said “Overall, her

Refuge provides highlights of monthly biology activities
J N “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge biological science technician Avery Renshaw recently reported on the Sanibel refuge's biology activities for the month of February
Every week, she participates in a collaborative stakeholder group to report on water quality conditions in the Caloosahatchee River and estuary, including the refuge complex The local group includes the refuge, city of Sanibel, Lee County, city of Cape Coral and SanibelCaptiva Conservation Foundation The report goes to the U S Army Corps of Engineers and South Florida Water Management District, which manage the input of freshwater flows from Lake Okeechobee into the river and estuary As each report states, its purpose is to “(provide) a scientific assessment of Caloosahatchee River and Estuary conditions and how these conditions affect the health, productivity, and function of the system ”
Renshaw explained that the report includes a recommendation from the group on water management and policy decisions The group is part of a longstanding effort between local conservation partners to provide a unified and scientifically informed voice advocating for the improvement of water quality in the estuary, which is strongly impacted by freshwater releases from the lake
She added that the reported water quality data from the refuge is in part collected by automated, solar-powered water quality sondes purchased and sustained by the “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge

Shell Shocked
“So, doc, what you’re telling me is that I now have to squeeze in all the things I have left to do in 25 to 30 years? This news changes everything ”
The doctor put his hand on my shoulder and said, “I wish I had better news for you, but you have enough time to put your affairs in order Use your remaining time well ”
As I walked out of his office all kinds of thoughts went round in my brain How can I possibly squeeze in all the things I want to do and need to do in my remaining time? What a cruel blow Here I’ve been thriving in my novice senior years and suddenly there’s a time limit Terminal mortality is what he called it Well, doc, I thought to myself, I’m going to use my remaining time well
When I got home, I told my wife that I had some sobering news and that she needed to sit down
“I’ve been at the doctor’s and after reviewing some tests I took he told me that I had terminal mortality ”
My wife just sat there “What are you talking about? Everyone has terminal mortality We have it the day we’re born ”
“But you don’t understand The doctor told me I had a finite amount of time to live ”
Now my wife started getting concerned “How much time did he say you had?”
“He gave me 25, tops 30 years.”
“You’re joking, right?” my wife said “Twentyfive to 30 years? At your age? If the doctor had said two to three years that would be shocking and sad If he said five years that’s still bad news but tolerable But 25 to 30 years? Is he willing to sign an affidavit promising you all those years?”
I was confused “But aren’t you saddened that he’s put a time frame on how much longer I will live?”
My wife started to laugh “Saddened? I’m thrilled that your doctor gave you a life span that is longer than most people have I think your doctor was pulling your chain. He probably saw that all your tests came back negative so his way of telling you that you’re a healthy specimen was to tell you that you didn’t have long to live like to 25 to 30 years
“He gave you good news but in a very different way Can’t you see that?”
I sat there thinking about it for a while and still couldn’t quite understand the big smile on her face I said, “And I thought he was being serious and giving me bad news I’ll kill that doctor next time I see him ”
And the bucket list I had begun to organize in my mind of things I wanted to do before I left this earth was put on hold. I figured I now had a bit more time and could start putting that list together 20 years from now

Now is time to exclude bats from structures
T h e F l o r i d a F i s h a n d W i l d l i f e Conservation Commission recently advised the public that now is the time to exclude bats from your home or other structures Exclusion is not permitted during bat maternity season, which runs from April 15 to Aug 15 Exclusion devices allow bats to safely exit a structure without re-entry and are the only legal and appropriate method to remove bats from your home or building. It is illegal in Florida to kill or harm bats
While the state’s native bats typically roost in trees, caves or other natural spaces, they are also attracted to human-made structures. Waiting until now to exclude bats protects Florida’s beneficial bat populations by keeping them undisturbed while they give birth and raise their young, called pups Bat exclusion is a multistep technique where all potential bat entry and exit points in a building are identified To legally exclude bats, exclusion devices must be left up for a minimum of four nights and the low temperature must be forecasted to remain above 50 degrees during that time
FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION COMMISSION
The Florida bonneted bat is federally listed as an endangered species
The FWC suggests the following to aid native bat populations:
One of the benefits of the native plant, as well as other natives, is that it requires less irrigation to maintain it once established As a result, myrsine will require very little maintenance other than selective pruning to the desired shape and height Myrsine is adaptable to variable soil conditions and grows well in shaded or partially sunny environments It also has a good tolerance for salt spray, making it a good choice for beachfront conditions
Overall, myrsine is a great choice to add to the native plant palette for your garden or landscape The adaptability under many environmental conditions and its ease of maintenance makes the native a desirable addition to your landscape, especially when used for a natural buffer
Florida boasts 13 native bat species, all of which are both ecologically and economically beneficial They include the federally-listed Florida bonneted bat and tricolored bat, which was proposed to be federally listed in 2022 All of the state’s bats are insectivores, with a single bat capable of eating hundreds of insects, such as mosquitoes or garden pests, in a single night Bats’ worldwide impact is felt in their capacity as pollinators, seed dispersers and fertilizers
∫ Preserve natural roost sites, including trees with cavities or peeling bark
∫ Leave dead palm fronds and Spanish moss, which can provide roosting spots for bats
∫ Install a bat house on your property
∫ Report unusual bat behavior, as well as sick or dead bats, at MyFWC com/BatMortality
For more information on proper exclusion techniques and ways you can help bats in Florida thrive, visit MyFWC.com/Bats.

This is such a delicious recipe, easy to prepare and so quick We serve it at my restaurant paired with sweet potatoes and a big salad You can make it with your favorite fish fillet; just make sure that all the fish bones have been removed. Great option for the Lenten season. Serves eight (Chef tip: Use vegetable or corn oil for frying; they can reach a higher smoking temperature than olive oil )
1 1/2 pounds 3/4-inch-thick catfish filets, cut into 3by-3/4-inch strips
1/2 teaspoon sea salt, plus more for seasoning
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more for seasoning
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
1 cup grated Parmesan
2 cups seasoned bread crumbs
2 cups vegetable oil for frying
