The Fort Myers Beach Lion’s Club wasn’t going to hold its shrimp festival this year as its members continue to recover from Hurricane Ian, but after skipping one last year and twice due to COVID, the organization felt from the community a need and desire for the festival to return
“It’s a big deal to come back this year,” said Tracey Gore, who organized the festival’s Queen Pageant B y a n y e s t i m a t i o n , t h e f e s t i v a l

Andy Lapham, of Minnesota, tore apart the old record for the shrimp-eating championship by consuming three and a half pounds of shrimp in eight minutes

A Town of Fort Myers Beach Council m a n a g e m e n t a n d p l a n n i n g s e s s i o n focused on whether to limit commercial trailers, following the urging of Local Planning Agency Chair Anita Cereceda earlier in the week, turned into an expansive talk about whether the town should have its own food truck court at its former town hall property
Fort Myers Beach Mayor Dan Allers suggested having a space at the town’s former town hall property just for food trucks during a discussion about the proliferation of commercial mobile trailers on the island since Hurricane Ian The town hall was demolished last summer after being totaled by Hurricane Ian Mobile commercial trailers are prohibited by town code though they have been allowed to replace businesses lost to Hurricane Ian
Fort Myers Beach Councilmember Scott Safford first raised the idea of setting up a space for food trucks mid-island or at Santini Plaza, which was followed by Allers suggesting the town consider using its former town hall property for such a new venture
“The fear is of the proliferation on just all these lots, another food truck, another food truck,” Safford said “Which isn’t bad but when does it end? You are opening the floodgates I am not against food trucks I think they have been fantastic I just think we have to, as a town, have a clear vision Do we set up an area just for the food trucks mid-island somewhere where there is some empty land or maybe Santini Plaza?”
Allers put forth the town hall site as an option Thursday as “something that is not in the area that won’t directly interfere with a brick and mortar that is across the street.”
Safford said he is concerned about the

Help ‘end the stigma’ with public survey
Unless you are one of the very lucky ones, addiction has touched your life or that of someone you know
A neighbor
A co-worker.
A family member or someone else you love
Addicts those with what is now called substance abuse disorder are not limited to that “druggie,” “mugshot,” “panhandlingto-support-their-habit,” unknown person on the street who we have labeled
Too often too heartbreakingly often it is someone we know as a friend, have broken bread with, or by the nickname we gave them in childhood when any thought of drug or alcohol abuse was an impossibility.
In the world we live in, it is not
Fostered by the very institutions we pay taxes to protect our families and our communities, the worst era of addiction the world has seen began in the 1990s when opioids were considered a miracle drug for those with chronic pain
Touted as non-addictive in time-release form, these pills were aggressively marketed by pharmaceutical companies while “clinical norms also began emphasizing patients' pain and treating it with opioids,” according to “ T h e O p i o i d C r i s i s a n d R e c e n t F e d e r a l Policy Responses,” a September 2022 report p u b l i s h e d b y t h e C o n g r e s s i o n a l B u d g e t Office “In addition, oversight and reimbursement incentives in the health care system encouraged opioid prescribing ”
That's a formal way of saying the pills were formulated, addiction probability was overlooked or ignored, drug companies and pain-management clinics and their pharmacies made money by the truckload while lobbyist-led politicians raked in campaign donations and government regulatory agencies did little as the catastrophic failure at all levels snowballed, leaving bodies and destroyed lives in its wake
According to the report, the U.S. has sub-
sequently undergone a continued “series of overlapping waves” of death and addiction since the over-prescribed wonder drugs hit the streets with Florida, the country's pres c r i p t i o n e p i c e n t e r a k a d r u g - d i s t r i b u t i o n mecca
Crackdowns on pharmacy pop-ups did little to address the issue of addiction as heroin and counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl poured in to replace the drugs once not only legal but prescribed to, well, most anyone for what ailed them
The political solution?
Lock those “drug users” up
The U S prison population increased from 771,243 in 1990 to an estimated 1,585,400 in 1995 to 2 2 million in 2020 with 44 4% of the people there on drug-related charges
So stigma.
Incarceration
And additional stigma
SalusCare wants to help effect a change in direction and is one of 100 sites nationwide for a whole new effort to replace stigma with treatment and recovery services
The pilot program of which SalusCare is now a part, the Addiction Policy Forum’s Anti-Stigma Initiative, has a goal of “reducing the stigma that prevents people struggling with addiction from reaching out for help.”
The program was launched last year to “deploy and test new anti-stigma interventions ”
The initiative includes a survey open to the community that officials say “will help identify challenges to addiction treatment
The goal of the initiative includes reducing addiction stigma, eliminating stereotypes and prejudice, eradicating discrimination and increasing knowledge about addiction ”
“Individuals with a substance use disorder
(SUD) are too often subject to harsh moral j u d g m e n t s a n d f r e q u e n t d i s c r i m i n a t i o n , w h i c h c a n d e l a y t r e a t m e n t a c c e s s a n d increase rates of dropout from treatment and recovery services,” Addiction Policy Forum E x e c u t i v e D i r e c t o r J e s s i c a H u l s e y i n a release about the pilot program recently sent to local media. “All key sectors in our communities must come together to address the manifestations of stigma and improve knowledge and compassion This initiative will allow us to test new scales and interventions to address stigma at the local level ”
SalusCare, a not-for-profit mental health and substance abuse service provider based in Fort Myers, believes mitigating the stigma opens the path to recovery
“The Anti-Stigma Initiative reaffirms our commitment to providing a supportive and compassionate environment for individuals who are impacted by substance use disorders,” SalusCare Chief Executive Officer Stacey Cook said in the release “By challen g in g s tig matizin g b elief s , w e aim to remove the barriers that often prevent individuals from seeking help and support on their journey to recovery ”
SalusCare needs public participation for its efforts and to that end “invites the entire community to take the survey, which takes about 10 minutes to complete It includes questions about how people view addiction and addiction treatment ”
It's a start
And it's an invitation to which we urge a “yes” from both residents and employers
For our neighbors and friends
For those we love
For all of us

Lee Clerk partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters to give students hands-on, local government experience
Lee County Clerk and Comptroller Kevin Karnes recently announced a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast that allows students to gain an inside look and hands-on experience with the Lee County Clerk’s office and several other constitutional offices
Through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, called “Beyond School Walls,” students from North Fort Myers High School (Littles) are paired with Clerk employee mentors (Bigs) to build relationships and learn all about the services provided by the Lee County Clerk’s office & other local governments and the functions the organizations perform The program is also tied to the concept that the Littles would hopefully choose career paths in the public sector
Beyond School Walls recently kicked off at the clerk’s office, and since that time, the students have had the opportunity to go on a behind-the-scenes tour of the courts department, visit the evidence room to learn about the role evidence plays in the judicial process, and go into a courtroom to hear from Clerk Karnes about the clerk’s role during courtroom proceedings
“This is such a wonderful opportunity for us to continue our commitment of giving back to the community in meaningful ways,” said Karnes. “Partnering with an organization like Big Brothers Big Sisters will not only create a lasting impact with these kids, but also our Clerk mentors We couldn’t be more excited to teach these students about the Clerk’s office and our role in local gov-
ernment ”
The students come to the Clerk’s office once a month and spend several hours with their mentor.
“We are grateful for our partnership with the Lee County Clerk’s office,” said Joy Mahler, President|CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast “Through a collaborative partnership, we have extended the education of our youths beyond their school The skills students will gain through this program will be unmatched, and will help guide them to the next steps in their lives and careers ”

Early voting kicks off for Presidential Preference Primary School district: Thousands of books awaiting review
By MEGHAN BRADBURY news@breezenewspapers com
To comply with state legislation, the School District of Lee County board has uploaded more than 100,000 books with thousands still pending review
“I think it is important; numbers speak a lot,” Superintendent Dr Christopher Bernier recently said regarding the ongoing conversation regarding classroom libraries.
When all classroom libraries had to be loaded into Beanstack for review, a total of 102,638 books were loaded
“By 9/2, with only 16 media professionals available to do the work, they had r e v i e w e d 8 3 , 0 0 0 B y 1 0 / 3 r e v i e w e d 16,175,” he said “However, our teachers
are still buying books ”
Bernier said the total number of books needing to be reviewed rose to 117,790 for an additional 15,152 books that teachers purchased between Sept 2 and Oct 3
“By 2/29 we had reviewed 56,608 books, but another additional 10,000 books have been added to the review We are consistently making these reviews These teachers understand media specialists work at night, outside of their regular day and weekends, to complete this task,” he said

Community Foundation accepting applications for scholarships
By NATHAN MAYBERG nmayberg@breezenewspapers com
The Fort Myers Beach Community Foundation has begun accepting applications for its scholarship program
Anyone who lives on the beach or whose parent or guardian lives or works on Fort Myers Beach may apply, according to criteria listed on the organization’s website at fmbcommunityfoundation com
The scholarships are for students attending college, or who are enrolling in certificate courses, trade

government prohibiting businesses and giving advantages to those already established on the island though he acknowledged those businesses needed an advantage after Hurricane Ian “We want to do the most we can to create a free market but there has to got to be a little bit of boundaries there,” he said
Councilmember Karen Woodson said she supports a space for food trucks who are new to the island though Councilmember John King questioned whether the town would be giving businesses an unfair advantage by using town hall property for food trucks over property owners who are paying taxes
Town of Fort Myers Beach Manager Andy Hyatt said the town could charge fees for the use of the former town hall land
End date for commercial trailers
Allers said he didn’t support a hard deadline for commercial mobile trailers and asked if the town council wants to set a hard stop date for such trailers on the island
Woodson said the town should make preferences for trailers that support existing businesses
“My preference is to the businesses that were here before the storm. I would give all kinds of exceptions for
schools, pre-requisite classes or a general equivalency diploma
The scholarships are available to any student who lives or works in the Fort Myers Beach 33931 zip code, or who has a parent who lives or works in the 33931 zip code
Additionally, the Fort Myers Beach Community F
offers to students who previously lived in the Fort Myers Beach area code but now live in a nearby community
them,” Woodson said “Like Times Square, for example, they don’t own the property necessarily. Some do, but most don’t They were businesses that were here before, they are trying to see what they can do ” Woodson took issue with some businesses that have set up shop after Hurricane Ian
“I have the biggest issue with businesses that were not here before the storm and coming in and renting property in prime areas that were never part of that business there before,” Woodson said
Allers said the Sunset Tropical Grill property “is essentially what sparked this whole conversation or accelerate it I guess ” The former restaurant currently has a commercial trailer business called “Queen of Weed.”
Allers said he had not received any complaints about food trucks “or temporary uses” until “this one truck showed up ”
Safford said the market would decide what is successful Allers said enforcing a deadline can be difficult because property owners getting rent are in no rush to build a brick and mortar
“I think we have all been very fair in trying to work with people to help them get on their feet,” Allers said “Are we saying then, (if) you own the land but you are
Recipients can be either part-time or full-time students Preference will be given to those in financial need
The Fort Myers Beach Community Foundation also offers a $500 scholarship through Florida Southwestern State College for students from the Fort Myers Beach 33931 zip code

choosing not to open the business that you also owned there because you can make more rent from somebody who is willing to run a T-shirt shop, do we really want to get involved in telling them how to operate their property or their business?”
Allers asked if the town should put a time limit on such businesses “I have a problem with telling a landowner that spent a lot of money, pays a lot on taxes, that they can’t run a commercial business that is legal and allowable, whether you like it or not,” he said
Safford said that limiting new businesses will raise prices and limit competition
Councilmember John King asked if the town can allow the mobile commercial trailers for “extenuating circumstances” and revisit it later
Vice Mayor Jim Atterholt raised questions about whether limiting businesses could lead to litigation He sees potential for trailers that offer services currently sparse or unavailable on the island, such as haircuts “It’s a community discussion that is important,” he said Atterholt said shopping centers at Key Estero Shops, Santini Plaza and Seagrape Plaza were still facing uncertainties

The games will last 15 minutes each or until the first team reaches 11 points (whichever comes first), according to the rules posted on the registration site There will be a five-minute break between games
Sullivan, who sits on the Bay Oaks Recreational Campus Advisory Board, said the tournament is being
called the “Dinky Pickleball Tournament” after a pickleball move called a “dink ” A dink is a soft shot hit on a bounce over the bet intended to land just over the net in order to create an awkward return volley from the opponent
Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers with trophies and gift cards to Rude Shrimp. Each entrant will receive a free sweat towel
A food truck will be on site for the day, with sandwiches and coffee, Sullivan said
Alex King's Current Coastal Realty is sponsoring the tournament

Histor y of Terr y Park and the Connection to Thomas Edison
In 1921, Dr Marshall Terry, along with his wife Tootie McGregor-Terry, donated several acres of land that had in its earliest days been a cow pasture and later the site of the Lee County fair Lee County government took formal possession of the land, which was a mile east of the City of Fort Myers with the stipulation that “all property shall be used as a park and public property.”
Using the specifications put forth by Cornelius McGillicuddy, aka “Connie Mack,” manager and owner of the Philadelphia Athletics, construction of the original ball field began in 1923 and was officially named Terry Park After two years of negotiations between Mack and a committee led by Richard Richards Sr , owner of the Fort Myers Royal Palm Pharmacy, the Athletics agreed to play their spring training games in Fort Myers, starting in 1925
Terry Park served as the official spring training home of the Athletics until 1936 The team won the World Series in both 1929 and 1930. Over the next five decades, other major league baseball teams used the ballpark to play their pre-season exhibition games, including t h e C l e v e l a n d I n d i a n s , K a n s a s C i t y R o y a l s a n d Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famers such as George Brett, Roberto Clemente, Ty Cob, Jimmy Foxx, and Babe Ruth
are just some of stars that graced the fields at Terry Park, helping bring national exposure to the “City of Palms ”
Thomas Edison, world-famous inventor and businessman, was also a baseball fan In a 1927 interview, Edison was quoted as saying “Baseball is the greatest of American games I don’t believe you can find a more ardent follower of baseball than myself, as a day seldom passes when I do not read sporting pages of the newspaper ” Edison decided to visit Terry Park on a few occasions to watch the Athletics play, even seizing one opportunity to participate in the team’s batting practice session
Presentations at Edison and Ford Winter Estates
For spectators wanting to learn more about the history of spring training and the baseball legends that played in Fort Myers, Edison Ford museum manager, Holly Shaffer, will give presentations on March 15 At 11 a m , she'll discuss the history of spring training in Fort Myers and then at 2 p m , she will talk about Robert Clemente and the Pittsburgh Pirates during the time they were in Fort Myers. 50th class reunion set for April 27
By MEGHAN BRADBURY news@breezenewspapers com
A 50th class reunion has been scheduled for the North Fort Myers High School 1974 graduating class for next month
Martha (Lolly) Crotty said the reunion committee began planning about 18 months ago and has reached out to classmates through email and text messages After hearing from about 60 people, they created a Facebook page – North Fort Myers Class of 1974 Reunion, to see if they could find more of their classmates
The reunion activities will include a tour of North Fort Myers High School, 5000 Orange Grove Blvd at 2:30 p m ,
Friday, April 26; a meet- and-greet from 4 to 7 p m the same day, at Brooke’s Restaurant, 4450 Hancock Bridge Pkwy in North Fort Myers A dinner will commence the reunion from 6 to 10 p m Saturday, April 27, at Ter-tini’s, 1901 Crystal Dr , Fort Myers
Graduates of 1974 who would like to attend the reunion or asked to reach out either by phone call or text message to Karen (Curtis) Huston at (239) 443-0493, or Crotty at (239) 851-4515
The cut off to RSVP is April 1
Crotty said the tour of the high school has been scheduled because it has been rebuilt since they attended the school.
“The only thing that was there when we were there is the
gymnasium,” she said “What’s more amazing is when we started there it was a seventh through 12th school – North Fort Myers Junior and Senior High When we were in eighth grade, they were transitioning over to middle school – eighth through twelfth and then ninth through twelfth”
Crotty said they were the bottom class for three years in a row
“So many of us either went to J Collin English Elementary, or Tropic Isles,” she said
Since their last reunion they have had dinner once a month for those people who still live locally It usually attracts 10 to 12 people, Crotty said

Class on Florida Native Plants offered at Edison and Ford Winter Estates
Edison and Ford Winter Estates will hold a class on Florida native plants, "The Power of Natives in Your Landscape" on Tuesday, March 19, at 1:30 p m and Saturday, March 23, at 10 a m Anyone wanting to learn about plants that are native to Florida should select from one of the class dates and register in advance
Most landscapes in Florida feature exotic plants, which are more readily sold at garden centers Native plants have evolved with butterflies and birds, so they are an important component of gardening for anyone who wants to attract the winged creatures Many native shrubs produce berries that are eaten by migrating and resident birds, wildflowers produce an abundance of nectar and pollen for pollinators, and some natives produce edible fruit for humans
Native plants are essential for anyone w a n t i n g t o s t a r t a b u t t e r f l y g a r d e n Butterflies need both host and nectar plants, and while they often will drink nectar from a variety of plants, they typically require a certain species or plant family as a host For example, milkweed is the host for the Monarch, Queen, and Soldier butterflies While butterflies may flitter through any garden looking for nectar, host plants are required to entice them to take up residence
Migrating birds expend a lot of energy during the spring and fall migration periods The birds depend on places to stop and re-fuel, and this is where a native garden can make a difference for the exhausted birds Adult birds also depend on native gardens when raising their young This is another instance where host plants are important While adult birds enjoy berries and seeds, they rely mostly on caterpillars to feed their young Baby birds need to eat hundreds of caterpillars When people plant exotic plants that local caterpillars don't eat, and spray their yards
with pesticides, birds don't have food for their chicks
As more people move to Florida, more natural areas are being developed and unfortunately, that equates to lost habitat for birds, butterflies and other wildlife Luckily, some wildlife stewards, such as D o u g T a l l a m y , a r e t e a c h i n g p e o p l e around the country the importance of planting natives to help offset the extraordinarily large areas of lost habitat
In Florida, many native plants are endangered because of habitat loss due to development in key areas, such as the Pine Rocklands in Miami and the Sandhill and Scrub habitats of the Lake Wales Ridge Since birds, insects, plants and o t h e r w i l d l i f e , s u c h a s t h e G o p h e r Tortoise all depend on each other for survival, it's not just the plants that could go extinct
In addition to teaching how to bring birds and butterflies to a home landscape, this program will also teach how to add native plants to existing gardens, how to incorporate plants in dry and sunny condit i o n s , a n d w h i c h p l a n t s e n j o y s a l t y breezes Participants will also get a tour of the native garden areas at the Estates A copy of the material covered in class, reference sources, and a coupon for 20% off plants from the Garden Shoppe will be provided R e g i s t r a t i o n i s r e q u i r e d o n l i n e a t EdisonFord org The class will be held at t h
Participants should wear sunscreen, comfortable shoes and a hat Class fee is $45 for Edison Ford members and $60 for non-members
