Red Sox Giolito to have elbow surgery; other players showing promise this spring

While the Boston Red Sox picked up a win Monday afternoon at JetBlue Park, a looming loss reared its head following the game via news from manager Alex Cora.

It was confirmed Boston's biggest starting rotation pick up, Lucas Giolito, will require elbow surgery, with the proc e d u r e t a k i n g p l a c e T u e s d a y i n Birmingham, Alabama

“The extent of it, w don’t know yet,” Cora said of what kind of p r o c e d u r e t h e r i g h thander will undergo “We know it’s with the ligament So we’ll k n o w m o r e ( T u e s d a y ) when they go in The type of surgery, we don’t know yet ”

Giolito, an All-Star in 2019 with the W h i t e S o x , f e l t d i s c o m f o r t d u r i n g a Spring Training start on March 1 There had been heavy speculation since he was removed from that game on his future for the season, which is now certainly one that will be missed

On a brighter note, a candidate to b r e a k c a m p i n t h e s t a r t i n g r o t a t i o n , Cooper Criswell, was as solid as can be against the Pirates Monday, not allowing a run over 3 2/3 innings, giving up two hits, no walks and striking out four

“I felt like this was the best (outing) of the spring so far,” Criswell said “It's just continuing to stack days and go from today “It's nice to know I'm in the mix (for a rotation spot), but I think we've got a great group of guys here At the end of the day, we all want to win games (Cora, Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow,) everyone knows I'm willing to do whatever they ask of me, whether that is to start, come out of the pen long relief or even just a one-inning role, I'm pretty much open to whatever. At the end of the day I think everyone here just wants to win baseball games ”

The 6-foot-6 Criswell was a 13th round pick of the Los Angeles Angles in the 2018 MLB Draft and made his major league debut in 2021

In 2022, he was claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Rays and made 10

Red Sox: Giolito to have elbow surgery, Criswell pitching well

From

relief appearances for the club in 2023, pitching at least two innings in each game

He was designated for assignment by the Rays in Nov of '23, and signed with the Red Sox as a free agent on Dec 13

While he doesn't light up the radar gun (average fastball 88 mph in '23), Criswell features a handful of pitches with movement, including a slider/ sinker, cutter and change-up

“I feel like guys like me know their role, and they try and go out there and execute that role to the best of their ability,”

Criswell said on his lack of velocity, which the Sox have been trying to improve this camp “I just use what I have to try and do the best I can and get out there and get quick outs, soft contact "

Cora said "it'd be great" if the 27-yearold could see an uptick in velocity, but that he does a good job of moving the ball around the strike zone

"We're very pleased with the progress of where he's at," Cora said "It's a different angle The radar gun does show 97, 98, but there's pitchability, and there's value in that

"Not everybody can overpower people and live in that vertical area You still have to make pitches "

Red Sox top prospect Marcelo Mayer made his Spring Training debut Monday in relief at shortstop While he did make an error in the field, the 21-year-old and '21 first-round pick (4th overall) ripped a double in his lone at-bat

"I'm very impressed with, and this is from the past, too, how calm he is in the batter's box," Cora said "He's a good player He understands the game The double play we turned with (Nick Sogard) was great The release -- he reminds me a lot of Carlos (Correa) Straight over the top with

A veteran newcomer to the club, C J Cron, also made his spring debut Monday after signing a 1-year minor league deal with the Sox on March 1 The right-handed slugging first baseman is coming off a season where he dealt with nagging back injuries, limiting his time on the field between the Rockies and Angels

Cora and the club feel Cron could be a valuable bat off the bench, especially facing left-handed pitching.

“Felt good,” Cron said following his work over four innings, going 0-for-2 at the plate “Obviously the results aren’t great, but it’s alright, we’ve got a lot of time left It felt great to get out there with the team and get some (at-bats) under my belt ”

Cron was an All-Star with Colorado just two years ago, posting career highs in home runs and RBI With his health now trending in the right direction, Cron hopes to be a contributor.

Beach Shrimp Festival draws big crowd

By NATHAN MAYBERG nmayberg@breezenewspapers com

The Fort Myers Beach Lion’s Club wasn’t going to hold its shrimp festival this year as its members continue to recover from Hurricane Ian, but after skipping one last year and twice due to COVID, the organization felt from the community a need and desire for the festival to return.

“It’s a big deal to come back this year,” said Tracey Gore, who organized the festival’s Queen Pageant

B y a n y e s t i m a t i o n , t h e f e s t i v a l a ppeared to be a smashing success, drawing throngs of visitors to the town to line up Estero Boulevard for a parade of floats and costumed marchers, to more than a dozen restaurants offering up special dishes of pink gold Gulf shrimp caught by the local shrimp fleet, a queen pageant and a recordbreaking shrimp-eating contest.

Andy Lapham of Minnesota tore apart the old record for the shrimp-eating championship by consuming 31/2 pounds of shrimp in eight minutes

The 30-year old snowbird was sponsored by Wahoo Willie’s This was his first shrimp-eating contest

“One bite at a time Perseverance,” he said about his conquest Lapham said he wasn’t a big shrimp eater “If I don’t eat them for a month, it’s OK ”

While Lapham became the new shrimp festival king, the festival also saw a new q u e e n c r o w n e d a t B a y s i d e V e t e r a n ’ s Memorial Park

Emma Stam, who was runner-up in the 2 0 2 2 F o r t M y e r s B e a c h L i o n ’ s C l u b

S t a m , w h o a l s o w a s n a m e d M i s s C o n g e n i a l i t y b y h e r f e l l o w p r i n c e s s e s , spoke about her work for her sponsor and her family’s business The Property Medic, which has worked on rebuilding the homes of those who lost everything in Hurricane Ian

“It’s so special,” she said of her job in the company’s office

“I’m so grateful for this pageant,” Stam said “I’m grateful to be a part of this community and for the Lion’s Club I’m so grateful that Fort Myers Beach is building back better and stranger.”

Stam also thanked “all of the princesses and all the friends I have made ”

Gore said 100% of the money raised f o r t h e p a g e a n t t h r o u g h t h e p e o p l e ’ s choice award voting and sponsorships, goes to the Lion’s Club for its charities, scholarships, guide dogs, child care and to Fort Myers Beach Elementary School

“These girls were amazing,” Gore said “I’ve known most of these girls and their families all their lives ”

In addition to Sunday’s pageantry at B a y s i d e V e t e r a n ’ s M e m o r i a l P a r k , t h e princesses took part in the shrimp festival p a r a d e w a v i n g t o t h e c r o w d s f r o m Corvette convertibles, answered questions from judges at a social at Bonita Bill’s Waterfront Café, and took part in the children’s fun run

sponsored by Storm Smart, was named runner-up and Miss Photogenic Princess Gracie Stam, sponsored by Bonita Bill’s, was named second runner-up in the pageant

Thousands of people hit the beach over t h e w e e k e n d , w i t h s c o r e s o f f a m i l i e s pulling out beach chairs and umbrellas to enjoy the sun and a perfect breeze

Eric Elmquist, a Fort Myers native who l i v e s i n N a s h v i l l e , b r o u g h t h i s f a m i l y down to enjoy the beach This was his first time back on Fort Myers Beach since Hurricane Ian

“It’s looking real nice,” he said, while his children took to their waterboards in the Gulf of Mexico.

Brian Smith of Batiki West condos on Estero Boulevard was part of a group enjoying the parade and feeling thankful their building was still standing

“ I t ’ s a m i r a c l e , ” S m i t h s a i d T h e i r building was “down to the studs” after Hurricane Ian damaged most of the 60 condos inside, he said “We lost a lot of cars ”

Smith looked across the street where he noted that many of the homes and busin e s s e s t h a t o n c e s t o o d t h e r e b e f o r e Hurricane Ian, were no longer there Less than a handful of homes were still standing along the beachfront from Margaritaville t o t h e D i a m o n d H e a d B e a c h R e s o r t Businesses like Shucker’s and the Sea Gypsy Inn are gone

Darby Doerzbacher, who helped organize the festival for the Fort Myers Beach Lion’s Club, said it was a smooth weekend and a success.

In a change from past practices due to w o r k b e i n g d o n e t o r e p a i r L y n n H a l l Memorial Park from Hurricane Ian damage, the traditional shrimp boil turned into a shrimp crawl in which 16 Fort Myers Beach restaurants put together shrimp specials with shrimp caught by the local shrimping fleet and supplied by Erickson & Jensen Seafood

Doerzbacher said those who visited the restaurants to take part in the shrimp crawl that she spoke with “were happy with the fare and the venue. It was kind of like a shrimp treasure hunt

“The numbers are not yet in, but we are keeping our fingers crossed that those who signed up to be part of our passport program will give generously back to the Fort Myers Beach Lions,” she added “We appreciate all the community has done to help us return ”

Peter Ennis, partner in Snug Harbor W a t e r f r o n t R e s t a u r a n t a n d W a h o o Willie’s, said “The support and energy was incredible Fort Myers Beach resid e n t s a n d a l l l o c a l s w e r e a b s o l u t e l y thrilled to have the parade back

:The town and chamber did a great job with the booths set up for vend,” he continued “The music was great as it always is for the Sunday Bayside Park Concert Series ”
