‘There’s no such thing as bears on Pine Island’ Black bear explores Bokeelia resident’s yard

Lori Liano of Bokeelia said she didn’t know if bears were even seen on Pine Island until she saw one hanging around her yard

“We were leaving for church Sunday morning and Gianna, our 13-year-old, said a racoon must have knocked down the garbage,” Liano said

“We looked at the security video to see the raccoon and we saw that it was a bear and he was at the front door and he was at the back door ”

Security footage clocked the bear on Liano’s property for at least 10 minutes, she said She asked some of her neighbors about whether or not they’d ever seen bears and was told to call Florida Fish and Wildlife

“I didn’t even think about seeing a bear here, because we never saw one I reached out to FWC

and they put me through to a biologist who said he was probably dispersed from his family and probably swam here,” Liano said

While Liano said the last thing she wants is for anyone to hurt an animal, she does want locals to be aware of the bear’s presence She said her husband estimated the bear’s weight at about 200 pounds

“At the pool this morning I asked, ‘Has anyone seen a bear on Pine Island?’ Everyone said, ‘There’s no such thing as bears on Pine Island,’” Liano said with a laugh

Cape City Council addresses water supply facilities work plan ordinance

Cape Coral City Council adopted the Cape Coral Water Supply Facilities Work Plan during a special meeting Monday morning, a technical action to reflect the newly adopted date for the plan

Principal Planner Chad Boyko said the language that changed in ordinance 35-24 was striking through the old adoption date of 2017 and entering the new date of 2023

Monday’s adoption hearing was to make the change to the date, which passed unanimously by the City Council

Mayor John Gunter was excused from the meeting

“The City hereby adopts the 2023 Water Supply Facilities Work Plan dated April 2024, thereby being consistent with the South Florida Water Management District’s Lower West Coast Water Supply Plan Update

The city shall continue to coordinate future updates of the Water Supply Facilities Work Plan with the South Florida Water Management District, as required by law,” stated the ordinance.

Councilmember Bill Steinke asked if the letter they

received from the South Florida Water Management District last week regarding inclusions they would like to see in the plan affect the ordinance

“It does not change the adoption of the work plan,” Boyko said “We will work through whatever issues we have with the district ”

Phil Flood, with the South Florida Water Management District, said they asked Council to specifically amend the resolution that states the city will work with them and do necessary additional analysis, which would make the city good to go as far as funding

Council unanimously approved an additional whereas clause that City Attorney Aleksandr Boksner read regarding the May 9 resolution 162-24, which approved the Cape Coral Water Supply Facility Supply Plan update

The additional clause states that the city will address any concern raised by the South Florida Water Management District, as well as collaboratively work with the district

County Commission OKs expansion of eastbound right-turn lane on Pine Island Road at Veterans Parkway

The Lee Board of County Commissioners today voted to approve an agreement with a developer who will donate right-of-way along Pine Island Road to allow construction to extend the eastbound right-turn lane onto southbound Veterans Parkway for motorists exiting the Matlacha-Pine Island area

Eastbound traffic congestion on Pine Island Road often queues beyond the entrance to the existing 210-foot right turn lane The approximately 350-foot turn lane extension will aid motorists who wish to travel south on Veterans Parkway by moving the entrance to the right turn lane a total of 560-feet away from the intersection

The developer, Pine Island West Owner, LLC, will donate the right-of-way needed for the turn lane extension and has agreed to construct the turn lane when it completes

Development Order The county will be responsible for the cost of the turn lane extension, which is estimated at about $329,000

The timing of the work will depend on the developer but is expected to take place late this year

Public-private cooperation agreements for the construction of county roads are permitted under Florida Statutes Section 336 71 provided the project:

■ Is in the best interest of the public;

■ Would only use county funds for portions of the proj-
