Oktoberfest has tremendous opening weekend

Acouple weeks ago, it was iffy if there would be an Oktoberfest in the wake of two hurricanes that flooded the area and knocked out power for days at the German American Social Club

Through hard work (and getting the power back), the organization was able to stave off the third cancellation of the event in five years and hold a very successful first weekend as tens of thousands many bedecked in lederhosen or dirndls to enjoy German music, food and especially drink

More than 10,000 attended on Saturday, and Sunday promised nearly as many patrons, who dodged some sprinkles to enjoy the day

Susie Zimmer, advertising chairperson for Oktoberfest, said things ran smoothly despite the rush to get everything ready

“We ran out of a few food items yesterday but we got back on our feet and we’re good,” Zimmer said. “We were on pins and needles for a while We had no power after Milton, but minimal damage and just a little debris We recruit-

Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill ravaged by fire

The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill has been popular in Cape Coral for years Residents anticipated its opening in 2014

They watched the waterfront restaurant's months-long rebuild after Hurricane Ian devastated the Yacht Club Community Park in September 2022

They were happy the popular eatery was apparently left mostly unscathed from the one-two punch of hurricanes Helene and Milton, which caused a days-long closure

On Friday, all happiness was dashed

brought the blaze under control and put out the fire, but the Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill will again have to start over as the fire left a skeleton of charred framework, ashes and water-logged debris

“Last night, Cape Coral firefighters responded to a fire at the Boat House on Driftwood Parkway," the Cape Coral Fire Department reported via Facebook Friday morning "The fire occurred just after closi

s Fortunately, everyone was able to get out safely There was a heavy fuel load, including the thatched roof, fully restocked alcohol for the bar, and the windy conditions, which caused challenges for the firefighters w

Six-laning of Cape Coral Parkway to be discussed

The expansion of Cape Coral Parkway to six lanes will be among the discussion items at today's Cape Coral City Council workshop

The lane configuration, signal retiming and parking space study came about due to significant traffic congestion during travel peak hours at the Cape Coral Bridge

The city's Public Works Department was assigned the task of increasing the roadway capacity of the main thoroughfare from the Cape into Fort Myers as well as Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel As proposed, the plan calls for repurposing the parking/turn-lanes to through lanes and retiming traffic lights

This project would also align Cape Coral Parkway with the future Cape Coral Bridge six-lane expansion

Challenges include addressing traffic congestion, signal timing issues, parking concerns, travel lane obstructions and lane merge, according to city documents

The first task is striping and re-laning, which would expand the parkway from four to six lanes between Coronado Parkway and Del Prado Boulevard

The second task – signal retiming along Cape Coral Parkway, as well as two signals on Del Prado Boulevard to further optimize traffic flow

The third task would be the parking replacement study, as the transition to six lanes requires the replacement of 56 parking spaces along the parkway.

The final task is the assessment of travel lane obstructions, which will help determine if modifications or removals are necessary

The city’s Public Works Department has engaged with CALITRAN Engineering Group Inc to complete the engineering design of the project

Construction is anticipated to begin Aug 30, 2025, and completed in Nov 15, 2025

The workshop is set for today, beginning at 9 a m , in City Council chambers, 1015 Cultural Park Blvd

Cape Council to get update on old golf course acreage

Cape Coral City Council will get an update today on the state of the old golf course acreage, a 175-acre parcel the city is eyeing as a possible park

The current and ongoing maintenance tasks includes the city-wide mowing program, which takes place twice a month, pond clean-up and treatment, cart path assessment, parking lot, limited site assessment for maintenance and soils and developing a tree plan around the perimeter of the property, according to the presentation that is part of the council agenda

About 85-90% of the trees on the property are invasive species, according to city staff There is currently a scope of work bid being worked on, which will determine the timeline of completion

The assessment of the cart path will determine the feasibility of use Tasks include cleaning up weeds and grass as well as repairing areas that are unsafe.

The parking lot tasks include cleaning up vegetation,

improving overall conditions and removal of the old sign

The presentation also dives into managing public access of the site, which includes developing a plan that would provide for public safety That plan includes property a

enhancing facilities; increasing patrols of site via the Park Ranger program and minimizing low-visibility areas

There also is an environmental assessment as golf courses are known to have a level of contamination from chemical and pesticide usage during operation The assessment includes working with the state to identify and address any required remediation efforts for soil and groundwater Once those requirements are determined, a timeline and plan will be developed for needed cleanup.

The master plan for development is expected during fiscal year 2025-2026 The scope of service will be developed during the current fiscal year and use FY2026 funding The nine-month project will include data collection and programming, preliminary master plan development and the final master plan

Boathouse: Fire destroys Cape bar and grill

From page 1

The cause had not been determined as of early Friday afternoon

“Cape Coral Fire Inspectors and the State Fire Marshals Office have completed their investigation of the Boat House Tiki Bar and Grill fire from last night The cause is undetermined, but they are unable to rule out electrical Firefighters will remain on scene throughout the day to put out any hot spots that may arise," the CCFD said in a latemorning Facebook page update

Debra Beatson, a resident of Cape Coral since 2021, considered the restaurant a favorite for friends and family to visit

“It was always rocking Even in the early morning, it was rocking,” Beatson said “They had just reopened It's so sad And I saw those flames this morning on TV, and it broke my heart ”

Beatson had witnessed the restaurant’s devastation after Ian and was excited to be back to enjoy Bloody Mary’s and laughs with the community

“I would come probably once or twice a month I work, and my husband works We would come over for a drink or food whenever we were on the beach They did have good food It was a nice place and very upbeat,” Beatson said “It took so long to get it back together again after Ian We stayed for Ian, and that was quite a storm ”

After owners spent $263,000 to repair and design the building after Ian, locals continued to enjoy the music and environment of the Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill, despite the devastation to the park, now razed as it awaits reconstruction by the city of its public buildings and amenities Cost estimates have topped $100 million for a new two-story resort-style community center and pool complex, a pair of piers, a rebuild of the yacht basin, boat docks, four-story parking garage and more

The Boathouse and the beach remained the lone attractions

“The pier's not here anymore, like walking on it in the evening, taking pictures of the sunset And I love the bar around the outside because you could sit and look out at the river So that was neat So, they usually had some music, which was always enjoyable ” Beatson said

For Beatson’s family, going to the restaurant and the Yacht Club was always a meaningful experience, and they

will never forget the memories they shared at the beach

On June 14, 2022, Cape Coral decided to demolish all existing structures and site features With this rebuild, the Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill had high hopes of returning better than ever so guests could enjoy the restaurant and all it provides Nine months after Ian, the restaurant was up and running again

The fire was a final disappointment

“They said it started in the kitchen, which is centrally located because of all the serving It just made it easier for people to get where they needed,” Beatson said "So it's crazy, but I liked it a lot: sitting there, drinking, and watching the river ”

For neighbors and visitors to Cape Coral, watching the flames quickly engulf the roof of the tiki hut was devastating

Within minutes, the restaurant they had called home was gone

Former firefighter Michael Beatson stopped by the scene to witness the destruction caused by the fire and see what was left of the tiki bar

“I was in the fire service in Delaware This has gone quickly You're just trying to protect the houses across, and their stuff below it surrounds and drowns Now, that's all you have left.” Beatson said.

“You gotta rip that down I think that's got to come down Start from scratch, yeah, and by the time you get the permits, you will get all your drawings up and make it a little safer Well, this will be down for years," he speculated based on his background

Disasters like this aren’t stopping residents like Michael and Debra Beatson from staying in Cape Coral and staying patient for the places they love to return to

“I've been through two big storms now We got a little damage,” Michael Beatson said “We're getting older I can't afford to fix the house If I had to, I would go inland ” With the restaurant destroyed, he wishes for it to return soon and had ideas for any upgrade.

“I would go aluminum roof, you know, yeah, I think it would take away from the tiki hut or the boathouse It'd still be nice,” Beatson said “I know it'll come back They're good people And that's what we can look forward to when they get the whole place down here; one day, we'll all be by in good shape ”

Oasis wins first ‘Backyard Brawl’ with Ida Baker

Oasis came out victorious in the inaugural "Backyard Brawl" at Ida Baker High School Friday night, toppling the Bulldogs 42-13 and hoisting a brand-new trophy that both teams will play for each year moving forward

Five different Sharks (6-1) found the end zone on the night, with Oasis totaling 258 rushing yards in the contest, led by seniors Frederick Harley Jr and Parker Smith

"It's fun to be part of a first thing," said Oasis head coach Brice Bearman of the new Backyard Brawl "I was actually a part of a first in this area (the Black and Blue Bowl) This is something that is special To be able to take that trophy home, that's good I'm proud of them "

The Oasis offense moved the ball with purpose for the majority of the game, though the Bulldogs (0-7) defense made a big play on the first drive of the night, as freshman Dominic Salerno came up with an interception on the doorstep to prevent a touchdown

After forcing a three-and-out, Oasis found pay dirt, as running back Dallas Scott took a direct snap on the 3-yard line and burrowed his way into the end zone

S coring remained s tagnant until the final minute of the second quarter when the Sharks started a drive just shy of midfield

This time it was Smith (136 passing yards, 63 rushing yards) bursting up the middle for a 3-yard score of his own

"Obviously you want to score every opportunity you get," said Bulldog head coach Steve Howard "You want to put up more than three But, points are points regardless We put ourselves in a position to get points, rather than digging the hole,

so to say The positive thing is we got the points on the board, that's the bottom line Scoring is always a plus "

The third quarter started out rough for the Bulldogs, with a big running play being called back due to penalty Then, a backwards pass was recovered by the Sharks, setting up the offense at the Ida Baker 15yard line

On the first play following the recovery, Harley Jr (113 rushing yards) broke off a run up the left sideline and found his way into the end zone, extending the Sharks lead to 22-3

Ida Baker answered the score with its best drive of the game, capped off by an Elias Vargas 1-yard run

Oasis answered the call, though, as a long catch-and-run by Scott put the Sharks

Jaycee Park: City closes property in advance of planned renovations

ed to place the issue on the November ballot as a citizen initiative

The group continues to maintain its community outreach by talking to people and sharing the plan of the council

Berchtold said some of the people they encounter at the park are unaware of the pending renovations, which will include removal of the Australian pines along the riverfront and the installation of a number of new amenities

“They express to us how sad they are,” she said “We will continue the outreach to people To make them aware of what is possibly going to happen is vital ”

Berchtold said with the park closing, they will no longer be able to walk the park, but rather the roads bordering the park She shared concern about the groups particularly the mental health groups that meet at the park where they are

going to go

“There is no effort by the City Council to find other venues for the group of veterans that meet down there on a regular basis,” Berchtold said, adding there’s no effort for the AA groups as well “The council isn’t interested in the mental health well-being of the community ”

Cape Coral City Council entered into a public-private partnership in August for construction as well as for the management of food and drink services, one of the new amenities
