CIHS cancels season in aftermath of hurricane

The Captiva Island Historical Society reported that it has canceled its 2022-23 season of events.

In announcing the news, officials noted that they are “overwhelmed … with gratitude. ”

“We give thanks for the generosity of those who jumped into action to assist others in need,

” CIHS President Tom Libonate shared of the post-Hurricane Ian efforts. “The tears and smiles, as we hear of onisland reunions of our friends and neighbors. And we are grateful for the knowledge our barrier islands will, as they have historically, recover from Mother Nature's fury and blossom once again. ”

The CIHS plans to return in the fall of 2023 with a full schedule of events. In the meantime, the community can access the CIHS online archives and stream its documentaries on Amazon.

“On Sept. 28, 2022, Hurricane Ian made history, ” Libonate shared. “Our island is forever changed, yet we are forever strong. Together we will persevere.

The CIHS also expressed its gratitude to season sponsor The Sanibel Captiva Trust Company. After learning of the plans to cancel the upcoming season, it chose to continue its support. The CIHS will use the funding to help defray the cost of needed repairs to the Historical Gallery at the Captiva library.
