At iFLY students learn real world application of math, science, and engineering. We build awareness of STEM careers and show students that STEM can be more than what they read about in a textbook.
Visit iFLYworld.com/education to see how our instructors can bring science to life on-site
Indoor skydiving at iFLY is a tremendous learning opportunity for classes of all ages. It’s also a blast! iFLY is safe for all ages. Our expert instructors are professionally trained and make sure flyers feel safe and comfortable at all times. Learn more about our dedication to safety at iFLYworld.com
Our staff isn’t just great at flying – they’re great at teaching too. Our team offers demonstrations on the science behind iFLY’s wind tunnels, helping students understand flight, before they feel the thrill of it. We also offer lesson coordination between the iFLY Educators and your team, so we can develop a plan for your class, camp or club contacts. Prefer to teach on your own? Let us know what materials you’ll need to help your kids and our team will help coordinate. Lesson plans can be catered for academics of all grades, from elementary to college. Teaching your kids something specific? Let us know.
ELEMENTARY STUDENTS We focus on states of matter, force, and motion. All students will design an investigation on parachutes. MIDDLE SCHOOL Students apply Newton’s laws to objects in the wind tunnel, discuss balanced forces, and conduct an experiment on surface area. HIGH SCHOOL We explore what happens to a flyer’s displacement, velocity, and acceleration in the wind tunnel, and all students become a part of our science experiment. Leading an advanced placement group? We can ramp things up even more!

5 TIPS to Nail Your FAFSA the First Time
…and use it to maximize your money for college!
4
When you complete the FAFSA online, you can choose to automatically populate your IRS data. This makes things faster and easier and reduces your chances of verification (think “audit”).
Completing your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is no small feat. But with these helpful tips, you’ll get it done right the first time – and likely get more aid while you’re at it!
1
2
Fill out your FAFSA online! • It’s faster. • It’s foolproof. • It can get you more aid. www.fafsa.gov
Drop-kick errors + save a tree. Apply online. Online applications are as wicked-smart as they are eco-friendly. The online FAFSA uses skip-logic to ask you ONLY relevant questions, saving you time and a headache! What’s more, the online FAFSA is processed faster and catches common errors like a stealth ninja. You’ll create a FAFSA ID username that lets you save and come back later, and you can even sign everything electronically. Super easy, right?
3
The IRS called – they said,
Plus, starting with the 2017-18 FAFSA, you will submit your tax information from two years prior, rather than your taxes for the most recent filing year. Isn’t that nice?
Apply early. Time is money. “Fashionably late” isn’t an option when it comes to financial aid. In fact, the sooner you complete the FAFSA, the more aid you may be eligible for. Waiting on last year’s taxes? Don’t! The FAFSA now uses tax return data from two years prior if last year’s are still in process. It’s not too early. Do it. Do it now.
Let the IRS make your life easier.
Get your stuff together.
The FAFSA takes about an hour to complete – even less if you come prepared! Here’s a checklist of what you’ll need on hand: Your SSN, ID and proof of residency (if applicable) Your school code: 003046 | Franklin University Your W2’s and other income statements Your Federal Income Tax Returns (2 years prior) Your other financial statements, including banking, investments and loans
5
“You’re welcome.”
Avoid common FAFSA pitfalls with our helpful
DO’S and DON’TS.
DO
DON’T
Fill in every field. Every. Single. One.
x Forget to sign and date. No-brainer, right?
Triple check your SSN and driver’s license numbers. Just do it.
x Use commas and decimal points in numeric fields. Round it up.
Use your given name. They’re looking for Fredrick, not “Freddy.”
x Offer a temporary residence as your permanent address. Uncle Joe’s couch? Nope.
Register with the Selective Service if you’re a male, ages 18-26. Duty calls.
x Hesitate to include unborn children as members of the household. Welcome, baby.
List the school code for the college you plan to attend and others you’re considering.
x Enter the wrong federal income tax paid amount. It’s on your tax returns, not your W2’s.
Represent your blended family right. Include stepparents and parents in a legally-recognized same-sex marriage.
x Send your tax returns in with your FAFSA. They’ll just shred ‘em.
DEEP BREATH. YOU CAN DO THIS. AND WE’RE HERE TO HELP. Your situation is unique, but you’re not alone in this. One call connects you to a Franklin University Academic Advisor and our Financial Aid team. Financial Aid Office: (877) 341-6300 www.franklin.edu
Franklin University is committed to providing you with options for meeting your educational expenses using eligible federal, state, local and institutional resources while maintaining a focus on minimizing debt.

Welcome to Girl2Girl,
a program designed to inspire middle school girls across Ohio and beyond to explore their talents in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), and seek additional learning opportunities and mentorship to prepare them for a successful STEM career. A secondary goal of the program is to introduce students to female STEM professionals, so they can hear directly from successful women in the field. It is my hope that by inspiring young minds to consider a future in STEM, we can begin to bridge the gender gap that is holding our country back from being the innovative powerhouse that it can be. WHAT THE PROGRAM ENTAILS: • My personal STEM story • Why STEM and why NOW? • STEM facts by the numbers • Career options and career income comparisons • STEM professional (LIVE or via video) • Simple steps to take NOW • Q&A WHO IS THE PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR? Girl2Girl was created for middle school girls, as this is the critical age when girls begin to discover who they are and what they’re interested in/good at, and the sooner they can commit to a STEM track, the better! However, Girl2Girl can be presented to high school girls as well. HOW LONG IS THE PRESENTATION? Girl2Girl is a 30-minute presentation, which includes a STEM professional, LIVE or via video. We are happy to do photos (and highly encourage it!) following the presentation if time permits. WHAT DOES THE SCHOOL OR ORGANIZATION NEED TO PROVIDE? We simply need a projector and screen and we’re good to go! If we’re speaking in a large space, a microphone may be necessary as well.
INTERESTED IN HAVING GIRL2GIRL AT YOUR SCHOOL OR ORGANIZATION? Hurry! Booking NOW for Spring! I look forward to meeting you on my tour across Ohio!

The indomitable Al Edmondson clips hair, grows hope for all By Gary Snyder
A botched home haircut. Taunts from schoolmates. The future looked bleak. The young Jonathan Robinson had enough. He needed a problem solver. Pronto. Better call Al.
Jonathan Robinson and Al Edmondson.
Photo: Gary Snyder
“When I was in elementary school, my dad would cut my hair. I used to get mad at him because he would always nick me and mess up. The final straw was one time he was cutting my hair pretty low and he put a big hole in my hair. I had a huge bald spot and everyone was making fun of me at school. “That’s when I decided my dad wasn’t cutting my hair anymore. We knew Al through our church and knew he had a barber shop. Ever since, I’ve been coming here.” That bald spot tipping point 13 years ago kick-started a special relationship between Al Edmondson, owner of A Cut Above the Rest barber shop, and

busy in the early days of his barbershop building the business and providing expert haircuts.
Like he has to many in the Columbus Near East Side community, Edmondson became more than a barber to Robinson. The Gulf War veteran became a mentor, sounding board, and example of a true man of action working every day to improve the well-being of women, men and families in his once-thrivingand-could-be-again neighborhood.
But the death of one of his customers 15 years ago spurred him to go beyond barbering.
“Blood pressure. Haircut. They go hand-in-hand.”
“I had a client who passed away who was a very good friend of mine. He was a diabetic,” says Edmondson. “It made me think about how many African-American men come to our barbershops who may have high blood pressure issues and diabetes, and aren’t going to the doctor to check it out.”
While he has always carried a strong sense of service, Edmondson kept plenty
“So I worked with the American Heart Association and talked to them about
bringing their information in here to help men learn a little more about diabetes and the health risks for African-American males. I connected with Ohio State’s College of Nursing and with Chi Eta Phi, an African-American program for nurses, and they started doing health screenings in the shop. “At first, men were cautious about getting the screenings,” says Edmondson. “They didn’t want to know the bad news. But after a while, over the years, they became more comfortable with it. They’d see the sign up and know I was going to ask them about it. Blood pressure, haircut. They go hand in hand.”

In 2010, with the health screenings off and rolling in eight different shops within the neighborhood, Edmondson decided it was time to launch a nonprofit effort aimed at tackling greater needs in his community. Making a Difference Inc. was born. “Making a Difference started with a backto-school rally and then we created a fatherhood program that included basketball clinics,” says Edmondson. “You have to find a carrot to get the kids to come in…so we combined school supplies with a basketball camp, which the dads also enjoy. We brought professionals in to speak about wellness.”
“I reached out to my friends, the banks, and then to the YMCA because I want people to come out and talk about the importance of having family values,” he adds. “I brought Jonathan’s father, J. Tracy Robinson, on board to help lead the fatherhood program. We’re also trying to provide healthy food options in the corner convenience stores, build economic growth through the Mt. Vernon Business District, and attract a grocery store.” “It’s been a great ride.” Edmondson now aims to replicate and expand his model…and the impact.

MEDIA & OUT-OF-HOME ADVERTISING BUYS WHAT IS OUT OF HOME? Out-of-home media (OOH) is the oldest form of advertising and, after centuries of success, still one of the fastest-growing ways to reach consumers. • OOH is everywhere – surrounding and immersing consumers wherever they live, work, travel, shop, and play. 1
• OOH is impactful – with big, bold, creative, powerful storytelling, and a range of sizes, shapes, and formats that deliver larger-than-life impact. • OOH amplifies other media – driving mobile, social and digital engagement better than any other advertising medium. • OOH is real – in today’s world of clicks, likes, and page views, OOH is the real thing. It offers real-life impact in a digital world, and can’t be blocked, skipped, or viewed by bots.

Ohio State’s Opioid Innovation Fund inspires multidisciplinary partnerships to address the opioid epidemic
BY STEVE BARRISH AND CHRIS BOOKER
The hill is steep in the battle against opioids. Drug overdose deaths in the U.S. climbed 21 percent in 2016 from the year before, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and nearly two-thirds of those deaths involved prescription or illicit opioids.
Turning the tide of this growing crisis isn’t the work of one entity or field of practice, a point emphasized by the Opioid Innovation Fund: a $1.35 million commitment announced last year by Executive Vice President and Provost Bruce McPheron, PhD, to fuel interdisciplinary research and collaboration in solving the epidemic. “This is an opportunity to further build capacity on campus around the opioid crisis,” says CPH Dean William Martin II, MD, who was selected by the university to co-chair a steering committee responsible for allocating the funds. In October 2017, Martin and his cochair Roger Rennekamp, PhD, director of Ohio State Extension, collected preproposals from nearly 100 applicants representing disciplines university-wide. A third advanced to the next round in the selection process.
A HEAD START
“The full proposals, as well as the preproposals, really reflected the breadth of the university,” Martin says. “They were all well done; very competitive. It was a challenging process to even cull the herd down to 33.”
Taking on crises between classes
After the final selection, eight teams were awarded grants ranging from $100,000 to $45,000. The projects include a $96,762 implementation grant to develop the Franklin County Opioid Crisis Activities
Levels Map, a system to track and map, on a daily basis, data on opiate overdoses from the 22 emergency medical services organizations in Franklin County. The data will be used to help connect communities in greatest need to resources to combat overdoses. “It will be more than just a dashboard. It will be a way to address research questions and policy questions, and provide data in a way that Columbus Public Health or other community organizations can use right away to make better decisions, to make faster decisions and to save more lives,” says Ayaz Hyder, assistant professor of environmental health sciences at CPH and one of the researchers for the FOCAL map project. Another grant of $45,541 will fund development of a community and social network-based campaign to reduce opioid-related stigma and overdose. The campaign will educate people who use drugs, their friends and family, and the broader community about the opioid overdose-reversal medication naloxone, and how to recognize and respond to an overdose. Martin was joined by Francis Collins, MD, PhD, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), in the announcement of the awards in March. Collins also participated in a roundtable discussion with researchers and other community experts to discuss solutions to the opioid epidemic. “I’m very impressed and gratified to see the kind of creativity and energy and resources that are being put into this,” Collins says. “And we at NIH aim to try to be the best possible partner we can offer those efforts.”
“The long game here is to look for scalable solutions that are evidence based. I have no problems having that be the final filter.” — CPH Dean William Martin II, MD CPH Dean William Martin II, MD (right), at the awards announcement event with NIH Director Francis Collins, MD, PhD (center), and Peter Mohler, PhD, senior associate dean for research at the Ohio State College of Medicine.
Collins says an apparent federal budget agreement will likely mean more funding for addiction research and treatment. He says universities like Ohio State will be critical to helping communities solve the addiction crisis.

“There is $500 million for this current fiscal year on top of what we’ve already been doing. That is specifically targeted to increase our ability to do research in this space,” Collins says. “And we at NIH are prepared to figure out ways to inspire all of those investigators all over the country to come forward with their best ideas about how this could be most appropriately allocated to make progress in this space.”
A team of Ohio State researchers and community partners whose proposal, “Building Recommended Practices for Working with Domestic Violence Survivors Who Use Opioids in Residential Services: A Community Engagement Approach,” was selected for grant funding. Martin says the awards were just the start of a university effort to reduce the burden of the opioid crisis. “This obviously is a moment for us not only to celebrate the awards, but also to underscore the breadth of the opportunities and the breadth of a landgrant university to solve the problems in our communities,” he says. “This is not going to be done in isolation. It is done together with the communities that we serve.” 2
