THE BREMONT WRIGHT FLYER: A FIRST IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD Bremont unveils the ultimate aviation watch, incorporating original material from the 1903 Wright Flyer, plus its first proprietary movement. What makes the ultimate aviation-inspired watch? Bremont has pondered the question for years. Mechanically, it would have to be outstanding. Just as importantly, as with previous Bremont Limited Editions, it would have to incorporate a remarkable piece of history. In historical terms, what could be more remarkable than an original part of the first ever powered aircraft? The 1903 Wright Flyer was built and designed by the Wright brothers themselves in Dayton, Ohio, USA. It’s the invention and aircraft that changed the way we live today and it has now inspired our latest, and perhaps most unique, limited edition timepiece.
Bremont unveiled the Limited Edition Bremont Wright Flyer on the 23rd July 2014 at the Science Museum in London. The new timepiece will feature some of the original fabric used on the 1903 Wright Flyer aircraft. Just as significantly, it showcases Bremont’s first ever proprietary movement, the BWC/01, part-developed and designed in Britain with our Swiss partners. A number of the key constituent movement parts are also planned to be manufactured at the company’s workshops in Henley-on-Thames, which is the first step for Bremont towards manufacturing movements in their entirety in the UK. The 25 jewel, 33.4mm movement features a 50+ hour power reserve, Glucydur balance and
a hairspring adjusted via a micro-metric screw. Utterly reliable and extremely robust, the BWC/01 is elegant and beautifully finished, with a central hour and minute hand and a running second hand at 9 o’clock. This unique project was only made possible by the Wright family’s passion for Bremont’s aviation heritage. According to family member Amanda Wright Lane: “Our partnership with Bremont on the Limited Edition Wright Flyer watch is a natural fit. Bremont’s dedication to historical themes, particularly in aviation, demonstrated by their iconic limited edition watches, all incorporating genuine historic artefacts, caught our attention

immediately. As a top quality watchmaker, the brand is a perfect fit for the Wright brothers’ legacy. The wing cloth from the 1903 Wright Flyer is considered almost priceless by some, but we felt Bremont’s passion for aviation heritage made them a suitable choice for this rare use of the cloth. The Bremont Wright Flyer is a stunning way to launch our brand in international markets and is sure to become one of the most valuable watches ever made.” Nick English, Co-Founder of Bremont agreed. “Giles and I still cannot believe that it’s happened. Holding the original and invaluable muslin used to cover the 1903 Wright Flyer is incredibly emotive. The Wright family has been wonderful to work with and it was inspiring to see their passion for the project. Does the creation of a special aviation-inspired watch really get any better than this? Probably not. The combination of this amazing material and our new BWC/01 movement has resulted in a truly mind-blowing timepiece.” Proceeds from the limited edition line will help to restore the Wright brothers’ family home in Dayton, Ohio to its former glory. THE WRIGHT FLYER: HISTORY TAKES TO THE SKIES Next time you see an airliner soar overhead, or watch wartime footage of aircraft furiously defending European skies, cast your mind back to where it all began. One cold December day way back in 1903, the Wright Flyer became the world’s first successful powered flying machine. It was the ground-breaking invention of two brothers from Dayton, Ohio. Wilbur and Orville Wright were not scientists, they only had high school educations. And unlike other inventors of the period, they received no sponsorship to fund their endeavors. Yet through sheer perseverance and ingenuity, they became the first to master the principles of controlled flight. It was the

catalyst for an incredible century of aviation development that continues into the 21st century. Their pioneering techniques and systems remaining a fundamental part of modern aircraft design to this very day. Iconic machines like the Spitfire, Concorde and even the Space Shuttle all owe a debt to the Wright Flyer, a humble biplane made of spruce and fabric. The Wright brothers and their remarkable Wright Flyer truly made history - and continue to do so. THE 1903 WRIGHT FLYER: THE FIRST FLIGHT The morning of 17 December, 1903 dawned grey and cold. A strong north-easterly wind buffeted icy puddles amongst the dunes. But by 10:30 the Flyer was positioned on its launching rail with the engine running. John T Daniels, a local man who assisted the brothers, recalled the moment before take off: “After a while they shook hands, and we couldn’t help notice how they held on to each other’s hand, sort o’like they hated to let go; like two folks parting who weren’t sure they’d ever see each other again.” At 10:35, Orville released the restraining wire. The flying machine travelled along the rail with Wilbur running alongside to hold the wing steady. As it launched into the air, Daniels fired the camera and captured that iconic moment. The Flyer lurched up and down as Orville desperately attempted to counteract the pitching movement. A downward pitch ended the flight, but he touched down safely after travelling 120 feet in 12 seconds. That winter’s day on a windswept beach at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, history was made. And the aeronautical age had begun. In designing and piloting the world’s first powered flying machine, Wilbur and Orville Wright became the first to turn mankind’s dreams into a reality. Their

fascination for flight had begun in childhood and as adults they had watched as other pioneers tried, and failed, to master the skies. Wilbur believed that a lack of proper control was their downfall and set out to solve the issue. He hit upon wingwarping, using control wires to twist the wings and turn the machine. The brothers then began testing glider designs, adding an elevator to control pitch and finally mastering yaw with a vertical rudder. Their 1902 glider featured the very first three-axis control system, which remains an essential element of every modern aircraft. And with the addition of a small engine and two propellers, their remarkable 1903 Wright Flyer became the first machine to finally conquer the air.

INTRODUCING THE NEW ALT1-C IN POLISHED STEEL
DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR The brothers made three more flights in the Wright Flyer, each one progressively longer and more controlled. On the fourth flight Wilbur covered 852 feet in 59 seconds, but after carrying the machine back to the launch site at Kitty Hawk, disaster struck. Orville recorded the fateful day in his diary. “We set the machine down a few feet west of the building, and while standing about discussing the last flight, a sudden gust of wind struck the machine and started to turn it over. All rushed to stop it”. When the wind finally released the Flyer, the legendary biplane was damaged beyond repair. Its short but illustrious career was over. “Success four flights Thursday morning all against twenty one mile wind started from level with engine power alone average speed through air thirty one miles longest 57 seconds inform press home Christmas. Orevelle Wright”.
Naturally, he considered it an outrageous slight on the brothers’ legacy. In protest, he loaned their great American aeronautical achievement to the Science Museum in 1928 claiming that, “I regret more than anyone else that this course of action is necessary.” America’s loss was Great Britain’s gain and the 1903 Wright Flyer spent two decades exhibited in London. During World War II, the Flyer was moved away from the Blitz to the safety of an underground vault far away from the city. Then, in 1942, the Smithsonian finally changed its stance and credited the Wright Flyer as history’s first powered, piloted aeroplane. Before returning the Flyer to the USA, the Science Museum created a replica to put on display. Orville did not live to see the Wright Flyer take pride of place in the Smithsonian. At the grand opening ceremony, the British Ambassador Sir Oliver Franks commented: “It is a little as if we had before us the original wheel.”
THE WRIGHT BROTHERS’ LEGACY By 1906 the brothers had developed their invention into a practical aircraft and were ready to sell the design. Preferring to work in secret, their achievements had largely been ignored by the press. So it took a full three years to silence the doubters and convince the world their claims were true. The desired sales contracts soon followed and by 1909 they had become world-famous American heroes, piloting Wright Flyer displays across the globe to an adoring public enamoured with all things aeronautical. The Wright Company was formed in 1910 to manufacture their aircraft, yet only two years later Wilbur contracted typhoid and died aged just 45. Without his beloved brother, Orville lost his motivation and sold the company in 1915. He remained a key figure in aviation circles and by his death in 1948 had witnessed an incredible evolution in aircraft design, thanks in no small part to the remarkable work he and Wilbur had carried out.
THE FABRIC: FROM THE FIRST MEN IN THE AIR TO THE FIRST MAN ON THE MOON Following the incident at Kitty Hawk, the Flyer was crated up and stored in a Dayton basement. When the Miami River burst its banks in 1913, the basement flooded leaving the aircraft sat in mud and water for eleven days. In 1916 Orville repaired and restored it for a series of static displays, leaving only the outer wing panels covered in the original unbleached Pride of the West muslin, handstitched in place by Wilbur himself. A further restoration in 1925 replaced the entire fabric, yet when Orville passed away in 1948 his family discovered that he had kept large portions of the 1903 muslin. Over time, small parts of that fabric have been donated to aeronautical friends and institutions. Its importance to aviation history was aptly recognised in 1969, when Neil Armstrong took man’s first steps on the moon carrying a piece in his spacesuit pocket.
THE WRIGHT FLYER LANDS AT THE SCIENCE MUSEUM When the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC credited the Langley Aerodrome, a 1903 machine that failed to fly, as the ‘first man-carrying aeroplane in the history of the world capable of sustained free flight’, Orville was furious.

Further to the success of the ALT1-C Rose Gold in 2013 Bremont is pleased to introduce the new ALT1-C/PW classic polished chronograph. As with the rose gold model, this classically designed timepiece is based on the iconic ALT1-C collection, whilst taking design cues from the Victory Limited Edition, released in 2012, which incorporated original material from HMS Victory. The ALT1-C/PW is Bremont’s first non-limited edition polished steel watch that will form part of the core collection and will only be produced in limited numbers each year. As with the core collection timepieces, this polished steel case will undergo a similar hardening treatment, providing high impact resistance but still retaining its polished surface finish. The signature coating gives the watch case extreme hardness, excellent toughness, good wear and high impact fatigue resistance; it is as such used widely in the aerospace industry. Giles English, Co-Founder Bremont; “Having seen such a fantastic response to the ALT1-C Rose Gold, and with our classic collection being a bestselling range for Bremont, we felt it was fitting to further add to this line with a new polished steel version. This is also the first time we have ever used our hardening process on a polished case. The ALT1-C timepieces are particularly popular due to the timeless design and the polished steel was very well received with the Victory model. As such we feel the introduction of this elegant dress watch will add a new dimension to the range. Like the rose gold model, the case boasts more rounded edges, a white dial and more traditional numerals and hands.” As with all Bremont watches this COSC rated model will be manufactured at Bremont’s watchmaking facility in Henley-on-Thames, UK.

COLLABORATING WITH JAGUAR TO DEVELOP A LIGHTWEIGHT E-TYPE WATCH
Bremont Watch Company have revealed one of six unique wristwatches to be offered to customers of the six new Lightweight E-types to be built by Jaguar Heritage. “The Lightweight E-type project is so special that we thought we really needed to create something which complemented the cars and, since most classic enthusiasts also tend to be horophiles, a wristwatch seemed to be the answer,” says Jaguar’s director of design, Ian Callum. “Bremont was the obvious choice as a partner, we have worked closely together in the past on the clocks for the C-X75 and XJ75 Platinum concept cars and because, like Jaguar, it is a quintessentially British brand.” “We didn’t want a watch that was too obvious in terms of design, but something which captured the spirit of the Lightweight in a subtle yet relevant way and I think Bremont has certainly achieved that goal.” Giles English, who co-founded Bremont in 2002 with his brother, Nick, says the new Lightweight watches provided the firm with the perfect opportunity to take the important step of launching its own, proprietary movement. “We have been working on designing, developing and producing our first exclusive movement for more than a year, and it seems fitting that it is going to make one of its first appearances in this very special watch for Jaguar,” said Giles. “Creating the watch proved to be a fascinating project, as we were given access to the Jaguar archives in order, for example, to ascertain the exact font for the numerals used on the dial of the original rev counters. The fact that we were required to make just six examples enabled us to be very creative in a way that is not always possible when designing a watch for larger scale production - and that’s why we have been able to feature touches such as using real wood for the rim of the ‘steering wheel’ winding rotor. Each watch is, essentially, bespoke.” Drawing inspiration directly from the car, the 43mm watch features a black dial based on the look
of a Lightweight RPM gauge and featuring a subtle ‘red zone’ quadrant. The chamfered hour and minute hands replicate the instrument’s tachometer needle, while the chassis number of the relevant car is printed at the six o’clock position. The central band of the white gold case is made from aluminium saved during the construction of the new Lightweight body panels and will be anodised to match the colour of the car it is designed to complement.
Other touches include a winding crown which is engraved with the pattern of the period-correct Dunlop racing tyres which will be fitted to the continuation Lightweights, and straps made from the same Connolly leather which is being used for the interior trim. Turning the watch over reveals a further reference to the car in the form of the automatic winding rotor - visible through a sapphire crystal case back - which takes the form of an exquisite miniaturisation of an alloy-spoked Lightweight steering wheel, complete with authentic wooden rim. The back of each watch also carries the engine number of the car it is paired with.

Jaguar first collaborated with the Henley-on-Thames based watch company during the launch of the cutting edge Jaguar C-X75 in 2010, for which Bremont developed a unique, analogue dashboard clock in keeping with the 778 horsepower hybrid supercar’s futuristic nature and 205 mph performance. The two quintessentially British firms have now reinforced their partnership following the announcement earlier this year that Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Operations division would complete the Lightweight E-type project through its Jaguar heritage division. The new cars are the ‘missing’ six vehicles from the ‘Special GT E-type’ project, which originally started in February 1963 with the objective of building 18 cars. Only 12 of the aluminium-bodied Lightweight E-types were eventually built and the remaining six designated chassis numbers having lain dormant, until now. The six new cars will carry those original, historic Lightweight E-type chassis numbers. Each of the six cars will be built to the exact specification of the last Lightweight E-type produced in 1964 and will be hand-crafted at the original home of the E-type, Jaguar’s Browns Lane plant in Coventry, England. The cars will be sold as period competition vehicles and all will be suitable for FIA homologation for historic motorsport purposes. A race winner in the hands of a variety of famous drivers during its short competitive career, the car has achieved worldwide fame and original examples are now valued in the many millions. In recreating the Lightweight E-type, Jaguar Heritage has been able to call on the superlative skills and experience of many talented engineers and technicians already working in a variety of departments within Jaguar. The launch of this exclusive Lightweight E-Type watch marks the start of a long term relationship for Jaguar and Bremont. Future editions will be announced at a later date.

T E R R A N OVA In late 2013, the renowned polar explorer, Ben Saunders and his team mate Tarka L’Herpiniere walked from Scott’s hut on the north shore of Ross Island in Antarctica to the South Pole. Once there, they turned around and walked the 900 miles back - pulling their own supplies by sled the whole way. Their record-breaking 1,800 mile trek was the first to complete Scott’s route to the South Pole. On the outside of their jackets the two polar explorers wore their new Terra Nova chronometers. Far too cold for any type of battery operated device, the light titanium Supermarine with its GMT functionality and specially oiled mechanical movement became an indispensable tool. Using the chronometer to measure longitude, the watch could also point to the South Pole using the GMT hand and the sun. •

CODEBREAKER Bletchley Park is credited with shortening the war by around two years and saving millions of lives. Inspired by a classic ‘40s officer’s watch, the Codebreaker incorporates historical artefacts from the site. Pine from the floorboards of the iconic Hut 6 - the centre of the operations. Paper from one of the few remaining punch cards - used to analyse the vast amount of coded data. The wheel of an original Enigma machine has even been used for the watch’s rotor. In 2013, Bremont produced 240 Codebreakers in stainless steel and 60 in rose gold.
LIMITED EDITIONS Although all watches in the Bremont collection are manufactured in limited numbers, occasionally we embark on a very special project to produce something that is uniquely different and extremely limited in volume, typically due to the rarity of the materials we are working with. Whether it is the preservation of heritage or a subject that means a great deal to us, the key defining factor is our passion. Our first such project was a prime example, released in 2008 the EP120 was engineered using material from one of the most famous and iconic Spitfires flying, this wonderful plane was also owned by a friend of Nick and Giles’s father. Bremont followed the EP120 with the P-51 (far left), the Victory (left), the Codebreaker (above) and most recently the Wright Flyer. More examples of the limited edition projects that Bremont work on can be found on our website.

BREMONT TECHNOLOGY T H E M E C H A N I C A L WAT C H Bremont is built on precise timekeeping. Only the highest quality components are used in our movements. Every watch bearing the Bremont name is chronometertested, then further subjected to a rigorous quality control programme. The results are all documented in detailed records securely stored at our headquarters. The only exceptions are some of our limited edition pieces, for which a stringent testing programme is well inside the C.O.S.C parameters. It goes without saying that their movements contain chronometer specification parts. Every watch in our core collection is accompanied by a performance certificate issued by the ‘Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres’ (C.O.S.C). The certificate confirms that the mechanical movement has passed each of the rigorous precision tests necessary for the chronometer designation. Watches are the most precise mechanical devices on the planet. Bremont aims to keep it that way. Our watches are subjected to rigorous testing procedures. For example, chronometer certifications take 15 days to complete over several different temperature ranges and watch positions. The average daily variation rate must be between -4 and +6 seconds. With 86,400 seconds in a single day, it means every single Bremont watch is 99.998% accurate. Our ethos is brought to life in the design, specification and quality of the materials we insist upon. For example, we only use the finest Glucydur balance wheels as opposed to the ‘elaborate’ nickel equivalent found in many high-end luxury watches. Nine layers of anti-reflective treatment are applied to both sides of the sapphire crystals. And B-EBE2000 hardening technology makes Bremont watch cases an average of seven times harder and more scratch-resistant than competitors’. The result is a distinctive range of elegant watches. This uncompromising quality is reflected in the 3-year guarantee.
1
Bremont Roto-Click® Many Bremont watches have been designed from a clean sheet of paper. New bezel technology designed and built in-house is now integrated into a number of models such as the MB. The bezel rotates while gliding on a series of four ball bearings. These bearings knit into the gearing of the bezel to produce a most satisfying click for every minute rotated.
2
Bremont Anti-Shock Designed by Bremont initially for the MB range of watches, our unique rubberised movement mount encloses the inner workings. A flexible ring then connects the mount to the outer case, absorbing shocks and allowing the inner case and movement to float.
3
Anti-Magnetic Faraday Cage A number of Bremont models are designed to withstand the detrimental effects of magnetism on a watch’s movement. With a limited amount of space available, this is achieved by encasing the movement in a soft-iron Faraday cage. Any potentially harmful magnetic fields are then routed around the movement. These features apply to some models only.
Bremont B-EBE2000 Watch Case Treatment All Bremont watches are treated for hardness with B-EBE2000 technology. During this special stage in the case production the metal is heat-treated and defused with carbon, then bombarded with electrons. The process dramatically increases the hardness and scratch resistance of the stainless steel. On the Vickers’ scale of hardness, for example, B-EBE2000 produces a watch case with a value of 2000Hv - approximately seven times that of the normal stainless steel used for watch cases. Right: Case hardening treatment being carried out to surface harden the cases to 2000 Vickers
Bremont’s Trip-Tick® construction All Bremont watch cases use Bremont Trip-Tick® construction consisting of three parts:
1
1 The hardened steel bezel element, containing the
sapphire crystal. 2 The central body section, consisting of a titanium or DLC treated
middle barrel. 3 The steel and crystal case back.
The separate middle section offers flexibility in both durability and design. It allows us to manufacture cases from different metals, such as titanium, to alter the watch’s weight. DLC, meanwhile, adds to the variety by using contrasting colours to distinguish between models.

Bremont Sapphire Watch Crystals Our convex sapphire crystals come with a Mohs hardness rating of 9. That’s also the equivalent to 2000Hv on the Vickers’ scale. Untreated crystals can allow light to reflect back, significantly affecting the legibility of the dial. So anti-reflective coatings are vapour-deposited to both sides of the glass in a vacuum environment, reducing reflections to less than 0.5% for optimum legibility.
Automatic Movements Bremont focuses purely on beautifully made mechanical movements. Each one is finished to the highest levels of craftsmanship, whether in a clear-backed case or not. And all are guaranteed to within -4 and +6 seconds per day. For this reason Bremont is one of the few watchmakers to offer a 3-year warranty on every timepiece. Bremont produces some of the finest quality watches in its price point.
Helium Escape Valve The Bremont Supermarine range features a helium escape valve. This spring-loaded single-direction valve is activated when the differential between the inner and outer pressure reaches a critical level. This results in the release of the gases trapped in the watch case. Watches with helium escape valves are pressure tested at our workshop.
BREMONT TESTING Testing. It’s something of an obsession. Our first five years were devoted to it, both in the workshop and in the field. Watch parts are continually tested for tolerances, strength, hardness and finish. In fact, every single component undergoes the most rigorous quality controls. And it doesn’t stop there. Each movement in our core range is independently chronometer-tested over 15 days. Once assembled in their hardened cases, the movements are then checked and tested again before being regulated by the watchmakers. The watches then enter a further testing programme involving mechanical and visual inspections. Finally, chronometers are assessed for accuracy, functionality, automatic winding and water resistance. So yes, testing is an obsession. But one that results in every timepiece leaving our workshop with a 3-year warranty.
SuperLumiNova® Bremont carefully applies as many as 15 to 20 coats of SuperLumiNova® paint to a range of dials in our collection. It ensures optimal visibility in the poorest of lighting conditions.

Our intention from the outset was always to design and manufacture a mechanical watch in the UK. The watch would be designed around the principles of engineering and not fashion. It would look as visually arresting in decades to come as on the day it left the workshop. And it would be equally at home in the boardroom as above the clouds or below the sea. Bremont watches have been tested beyond endurance by explorers, adventurers, extreme divers and the military. Now, it’s your turn.

SPECIAL PROJECTS & MILITARY
The U-2 Squadron watch was designed exclusively for, and tested extensively by, the elite U-2 Spy Plane Squadron based at Beale, California. These incredible pilots regularly take these iconic aircraft up to 80,000 feet on reconnaissance missions that often last over 12 hours.
SPECIAL PROJECTS & M I L I TA RY Bremont has built a very close working relationship with the military. As a result, we develop bespoke mechanical chronometers that mirror the individual identities of a number of squadrons. It has allowed us to do something unlike any other luxury watch company: create mechanical watches that not only reflect our values, but also those of individual squadrons. If sensibly maintained, a mechanical watch should last forever - unlike quartz or battery alternatives. So a quality watch is more than simply a timepiece. It is an heirloom to be passed down through the generations. Bremont’s passion for crafting beautifully engineered chronometers is shared by many of our military clients. We go to extraordinary levels to produce unique timepieces for air force, navy and army units around the world, far surpassing any other brand.

BREMONT HERITAGE MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDERS We would like to say a personal thank you for your interest in the Bremont collection, developed to meet the expectations of those who demand more from a mechanical watch. Time began for Bremont in 2002, when we embarked on a journey to make beautifully crafted watches of exceptional quality. Inspired by a love of flying historic aircraft, of watches and of all things mechanical, our timepieces had to be tested beyond the normal call of duty - and not just in the workshop. Immensely precise, reliable and durable, Bremont watches are hand built in limited numbers; We’re proud that all are now assembled in the UK. Each is designed to appeal to those who share our passion for and appreciation of the innovation and mastery behind a beautiful mechanical wristwatch. We hope you enjoy the same satisfaction when you wear a Bremont watch as we do in creating one.

A mechanical watch that looks at home in the boardroom. Yet one with the capability to cope in the harshest environments. Durability was one of our core principles from the very start.
Any well-designed and well-made mechanical device, whether a vintage aircraft, car or clock, should theoretically work as well as it did the day it first came off the production line - if it has been well looked after. A Bremont watch is no different.
Britain has been home to more advances in horology than any other nation. Bremont is determined to play a leading role in the reinvigoration of the industry.

A BRITISH WAT C H C O M PA N Y It may surprise you to know that watch-making is a very British trade. Every major escapement design and around three quarters of related innovations came from these shores. Much is owed to Thomas Tompion (1639-1713), the ‘Father of English Clock-Making’ and the remarkable Thomas Mudge (1715-1794), who invented the lever escapement still used in most watches today. John Harrison (1693-1776), meanwhile, solved the problem of accurately telling the time at sea and by doing so, in calculating longitude as well. They were followed by other illustrious names including John Arnold and more recently, George Daniels.
