Self-care is vital, and even more so while in the throes of planning one of the most important days of your lives. Not only will forging healthier habits and a stronger mindset help mitigate stress or anxiety during the run-up to your big day, but it will also stand you in better stead as you begin married life. We’ve sampled a selection of wellness rituals and embarked upon our own mini journey to help inspire you with yours...
Feed the soul...
Whether it’s a daily hike on the moors, therapeutic sea swim or al fresco yoga session, nothing beats the endorphin rush of being outdoors. Exercising mind, body and soul, the myriad benefits are instant as you inhale fresh air, feel the elements on your skin and lose yourself in the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.
Water & Stone Wild Spa
Water & Stone taps into the wild outdoors with its Nordic spa experience at CSpace: a secret sanctuary in the centre of Newquay guaranteed to relax and rejuvenate every part of your being. Flit at your leisure between a woodfired sauna, hot tubs and ice baths as you embrace everything from the ritual of löyly (steam heat) to the art of cold water immersion (at a brain-freezing temperature of 5°C) in one invigorating hit.
You might wish to escape here with your loved one for some together-time away from the wedmin or make it a regular part of your routine as you build resilience, bolster your health and find peace in the private space that has been designed to cultivate a deep and lasting sense of wellness. The tension eases as soon as you enter the open-air spa and derobe in the Mongolian yurt changing room before roaming barefoot amongst ice tank, plunge pool, drench bucket, sauna and hot tubs. I slept like a baby after my visit here, feeling suitably restored and ready for whatever lay ahead.
St Michaels Resort Hydrothermal Experience
The spa at St Michaels Resort is a wellness hub that has it all. Situated a stone’s throw from Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth, its waterfront position combines panoramic bay views with a privately out-of-sight position. Inside, you’re greeted by coastal-inspired interiors as you escape into a world of unadulterated serenity.
The Hydrothermal Experience is St Michaels’ ode to escapism, featuring an extensive selection of spaces and facilities including the world’s only Cornish sea salt steam room, rainforest steam room, Finnish herbal sauna, experience showers, day beds and heated loungers alongside the southwest’s largest hydrothermal pool: an assortment of 21 massage stations in the form of jets, Jacuzzis and high-pressure showers. Outside, you’ll find a barrel sauna and hot tub framed by the ocean and lush greenery of the garden, inviting you to imbibe the elements of the season.
There’s a tantalising treatment menu should you wish to prolong your stay. As well as various Detox Retox and Afternoon Teatox packages to pick from, there’s also a host of signature treatments such as a marine detox massage and wellness treatments including Reiki, reflexology and nurturing massages. I opted for the heavenly Indian head massage, which sent me to another plane of relaxation as a heady blend of Eastern aromatic oils were applied to my arms, back, shoulders, neck, head and hair. Stumbling out of the spa and into the sea breeze, any notion of stress seemed as distant as the horizon beyond.

Feed the body...
Neglecting the vital role nutrition plays on our health and well-being can have dire consequences. A lack of energy and low concentration levels, disrupted sleep patterns, mood swings and disorders, a barrage of illnesses – these are all afflictions to avoid at any time, but especially during the wedding planning period when stress levels can be heightened and the to-do list seemingly endless.
As well as eating a balanced diet to maintain normal bodily functions, there are additional steps that you can take to enhance your nutrition. Mindful, plant-based eating is en vogue for a reason. Not only is it kinder to the planet, but it has also been proven to garner a wealth of personal health benefits. Consider switching to a few meat or dairy-free days a week, or permanently replacing a few everyday staples such as cow’s milk for dairy-free alternatives.
You could also increase your use of functional spices such as turmeric, ginger, cayenne and cumin, and look into incorporating nervine herbs as part of your daily ritual. Working as relaxants to calm and support the nervous system and abet conditions such as anxiety, stress and insomnia, examples of nervine herbs include lemon balm, chamomile, lavender, milky oat, St John’s wort, passionflower, valerian, skullcap, catnip, California poppy, borage and kava, which can be used in teas, tinctures, capsules or aromatherapy.
