This thesis attempts to respond to environmental issues affecting the city of Long Beach, Ca. Some of these issues include the lack of healthy natural environments, due to carbon dioxide gasses released from the Los Angeles port, and high vehicular traffic due to the growth in population in Los Angeles County. After analyzing the context of Long Beach on a macro to micro manner, a variety of scenarios were investigated to address agricultural possibilities in the downtown area leading the public pedestrian to the educational facility, AgriBloom. Agribloom is designed at a micro level based on the tested scenarios; as a result this demonstrational building offers innovative agricultural and algae growth methodologies.

STATEMENT
My thoughts and actions through this thesis has been led by my own personal experience from childhood and from what I’ve been exposed to after moving away from home five years ago. Living in an urban environment has its advantages and disadvantages. Nowadays we seem to be very distracted with work, school, and even social media which in a way has fogged our sight to the principle and beauty to natural life. Natural environments are scarce in most of our urban cores; more so in Long Beach than San Diego. Not to compare one city to another but Long Beach has not been developed compared to our coastal cities.

Diverse communities; Possession of neighborhoods

Poor air quality due to adjacent refineries; producing a score of 7.7/8.8 (pollution burden score)
The city of Long Beach has focused so much on tourism throughout the years that local residents have been forgotten. In result to this, the city lacks in culture, natural environments, little to no interaction within the city resulting in what I’d like to think of a non-urban district.
AgriBloom is the idea of what could represent a demonstrational building for local residents and upcoming residents from the new developments being held in the downtown area. Also, AgriBloom introduces a variety of agricultural growth methods as well as algae production. These methods have to do with high density vertical growth of agriculture The intent of this thesis is to address Los Angeles’ county’s growth popu- through phytopods, and aquaponics. Also Algae production through lation through influencing Long Beach occupant’s lifestyle by phases biorector facade plates. The idea behind these systems is to take the that address survival conveniences, such as; absorption of carbon essence of them and produce the same idea at a smaller scale at home. dioxide from gasses released from the neighboring port, and high levels of vehicular traffic. The essence of producing algae for energy is from the intake of carbon dioxide, sunlight and water; addressed on the skin of the AgriBloom building.

THE TERA-ART CENTRE + THE ESPLANADE
AUGMENTED CONNECTIVITY : the bridging of different forms of art [history] A unique location the site is. Despite not being located in the historic core of Persaro, the port has just as much importance through heritage. Historical Persaro relied heavily on the commerce of the ports. This contributed greatly to the growth and economic stability of what Persaro has matured to today. [context]
[visualization]
[formality of art]
the site occupies a port between the national park to the west, tourist attractions to the east, with connection to the city and historic core to the south, and of course the open sea to the north. A brownfield site that contrast the landscape and stone paved roads of its neighbors. A site that distinguishes itself from the historic urban setting to the newer housing developments.
A change in extremity to the rigid and dim conditions of the existing is indisputable. The solid port needed a break and a resurface of elasticity that served its contextual environment. Tera-form of elements needed to be applied to create a balance between the landscape, hardscape, and the water. The landscape blends itself throughout the site to frame the paths that line the art walk. Furthermore, agricultural landscape is brought in to create a contrast and vital usage to the society. Without eliminating the previous solidity, a plaza space allows a grand gathering space while performances take place in the outdoor theater. Also, by letting the water respond to its natural characteristic, a break in the center of the site limits a flow of river water into the break where a natural water filtration process occurs and courses to a reservoir that houses restored water for the green house. Lastly, with the knowledge and understanding of low tides and high tides, the outdoor performance space incorporates a stage that becomes an outlook area during the day but turns into a stage that is surrounded by water at night giving it the impression of a floating stage out in the sea.
Art is expressed in many different ways in this project. There is the literal term of art through sculptures that line a path from the south to the north. A harmonious form of art is articulated through the music center. The art of agriculture and performance of food is established in the greenhouse and restaurant that overlooks the plaza and sea. And of course, there is the kinetic art that is formed through the architecture. The form of the architecture is playful and interactive in the connection it has to the site context and vicinity. The form welcomes, overlooks, floats, and most importantly reconnects a variety of components.
[circulation] Separated by a natural river and the manmade port. With the capability to throw a rock from the edge of the site to the neighboring sites, but lack the physical and visual connection. By integrating a pedestrian bridge on both sides allows people to flow into the site in all directions. The relocation of the art walk welcomes the cruise terminal visitors from the north while becoming an open end destination to view out into the sea for those who came from the city. The music center invites its guest through a strong welcoming gesture from the south and east. While the sloped landscape and hardscape guides those who come from the west and the city.

Throughout the years opera has made an impact on the culture of Pesaro, Italy. This type of musical approach was introduced though expressing events and thoughts about the war in Italy. Given such historic aspect; its development has introduced a variety of stages that opera offers; from drama, comedy, to romanticism. Understanding how important Opera has become over the years it was meaningful to bring a music center to the harbor to share with the public the historical elements of opera though an interior terraced exhibition. The main exhibit space is terraced though three levels giving the public a sequential experience through different stages of historical opera moments with straight views into the natural water purification algae.
THE TERA-ART CENTER
Furthermore, acknowledging the fact that Music has made a tremendous impact; the musical aspect of the building bleeds out into the architecture of the building. Giving the public freedom to perform, give speeches, present, and/or inform to a large group of people. The roof forms itself into an exterior performance space with seating and stage space, and also provides a multipurpose space with shading for a great number of events. The west faรงade also forms into seating for the main stage on the site. In terms of giving back to the community the Esplanade offers the public education in the direction through the history of Italian Opera, followed by educational music opportunities, and offers flexible performance areas providing views to the city core and waterfront.

Mission Hills,San Diego was studied through analysis. Its rich diverse community was an inspiration in designing a Youth Center in hopes of bringing the community together by providing learning, interaction, and production use. Some existing conditions were pointed out in order to produce the upmost suitable desing for the community. Avariety of options were studiedin hopes toadapt and reuse the excisting site. The youth center provides the younger population an ability to make, design, play, and sell. The youth center is connected to a communal park welcoming the punlic at the same time zoning out from the busy life outside of the site. Alleys are celebrated in this design in hopes of developing alleys into something more useful other than car transportation. Here the alleys are used as aflexible communal space for possible events for the community which may include farmers, performances, etc.

Red Hook Brooklyn has an infamous history similar to many industrial dependent cities. The district Red Hook heavily depended on the shipping ports to maintain its economic stance. Unfortunately, that economy died when the shipping ports relocated to New Jersey, as well as many manufacturers in the 1970’s resulting in the rise of unemployment, abandoned homes and warehouses. Economy decreased leading to crime ridden and desolate neighborhoods. Furthermore, Brooklyn is recognized with a brownstone and brick characteristic, which gives it a very industrial look.
Docks above Brooklyn, a mixed use program offers an opportunity to the community of such diverse learning experience from timber use and construction to bicycle sharing programs available to the public including residents. These mixed use workshops will be mutually designed with residential units to accommodate the community of Red Hook, Brooklyn. The various programs have been designed through a vertical mid-rise framing introducing innovative timber systems through long span structure.
To conclude, Docks above Brooklyn brings back the history of Red Hook while integrating new and more efficient components. The ground level facade respects the context by reusing the bricks that are from nearby demolished and abandoned structures. This gives people a feeling of familiarity while above this feeling is a sense of historic obscurity. Taking in consideration such storms similar to Hurricane Sandy is unavoidable, the residence inhabit an elevated space above the industrial element to provide a sense of security. The shelter is supported on what resembles the columns similar to a dock. Docks above Brooklyn is the assimilation of the history, the current, and the future of Red Hook.
