For INTERMEDIATE and ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE players. A PDF tab sheet for "Shuffling it Up," an original composition for blues harmonica by Adam Gussow of Satan and Adam. Most harp players have some idea how to carry a shuffle groove in second position (cross harp), using chords in the lower octave. "Shuffling it Up" is something different: a first-position shuffle that holds down the groove by using tongue-blocking in the middle octave alternating with upper-octave blow notes and bends. The origins of this style lie with Deford Bailey, Freeman Stowers, Jaybird Coleman, and other recording artists from the 1920s and 1930s. Technical challenges include lots of tongue blocking, some basic syncopation, and a couple of blow bends. Nothing faster than a dotted eighth note here; just the challenge--for most players--of an unfamiliar approach to the harmonica blues.
