Message from the OC Dear Ifmsians On behalf IFMSA-PERU, we are very excited and motivated to invite the IFMSA Community to the Americas Regional Meeting 2017. In this opportunity, the event will take place in the beautiful Lima, city of the Kings, that is considered "Cultural Patrimony of Humanity".The lay-out of the main streets, the plazas, parks, the mansions with typical Lima style wooden balconies and churches let us see and relive the viceroyalty and republican era. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more, the stunning scenery, wonderful landscapes and delicious typical foods makes Lima the best city to get together for the Regional Meeting 2017. However, this is not all. We have prepared amazing routes around our country in order to meet the most important Peruvian cities. On the other hand, our theme event has been chosen due to the unfortunate ocurrences that are still happening in the world and, as medical students, we should not ignore. Last, but not least, we have arranged a luxurious accommodation and varied nightlife that makes Peru impossible to forget. Our experience give us the certain that the Regional Meeting 2017 will have an impact on your medical education, improve your knowledge and exchange experiences, ideas and projects with other future physicians around the Region. PERU: All you should know Every place on Earth is fascinating and unique, but Peru is one of those countries that manage to stand above the crowd. This place has so many natural and cultural treasures that have fascinated people for hundreds of years, and still fascinates them today. Peru is located on the west coast of South America, it is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and its lands are full of so many natural and cultural treasures. Peru is well known for being an extremely biodiverse country, with habitats ranging from the arid plains of the Pacific coastal region in the west to the peaks of the Andes mountains vertically extending from the north to the southeast of and geographical territory, create many different and ideal ecosystems, now, home of a great variety of flora and fauna.

History Throughout its history, Peru has been the meeting ground for different nations and cultures; it is a nation of mixed ethnic origins, full of mysticism, adventure and thousands of stories, myths and legends. Although the Inca’s Machu Picchu is the most famous archeological site in the country, it is just the tip of the iceberg. Peru had many fascinating diverse cultures and remains untouched by time. Caral is the oldest civilization in South America, contemporaneous with the most famous ancient civilizations in Egypt, India and China. The Nasca culture gives us the legacy of its mysterious and enigmatic desert drawings; Chimu cultures built the largest adobe city of the world “Chan Chan”; Chachapoyas culture shows us the greatest of its fortress soaked up with mystery.

Peru grows more than 55 varieties of corn, and you can just about find it in any color including yellow, purple, white and black.

The potato is originally from Peru, and there are over 3,000 different varieties. Proud Peruvians use the phrase “Soy mas Peruano que la papa” (I am more Peruvian than the potato).

The Inca Empire The Inca Empire known as “El Tahuantinsuyo” (Land of four quarters) conquered most of these cultures covering the region from southern Colombia to central Chile, including also some regions of Bolivia and northern Argentina. During this time they built fabulous mountaintop citadels, including the famous Machu Picchu.

Peruvian culture is the result of the encounter between two different worlds that have brought an active, vibrant and colorful life.

Festivities and traditional parties

The National University of San Marcos is the oldest in the Americas and was founded on the 12th of May of 1551. Peru has the second largest amount of Shamans in the world, second only to India.

Local festivities are the best way to approach the roots of our country and learn about its tradition. In most of the Andean festivities, the Sun (Wiracocha), the mountains (Apus) and the land (Pachamama) play as the central worship.

The Inca citadel of Machu Picchu was lost to the Amazon Jungle for hundreds of years, until it was re-discovered by Hiram Bingham the American explorer The finest cottons in the world, Pima and Tanguis are Peruvian. Peru is home to the highest sand dune in the world. Cerro Blanco located in the Sechura Desert near the Nazca Lines measures 3,860 feet (1,176 meters) from the base to the summit. Peru is a surfer’s paradise. Chicama has the world’s longest left-handed wave at 4km’s long, and Mancora (close by) has the world’s largest left-handed pointbreak.

Theme Event Climate Change in the Americas Region The effect of climate change on health is one of the greatest public health problems health systems will face in the coming years. Human activity has been the major contributor to accelerate pollution and rising temperatures globally since industrial revolution, making this change so fast that we are not able to adapt. Already in 2004 the UN had reported more than 7 million deaths attributed to air pollution, and it is estimated that by 2030, climate change will cause about 250,000 additional deaths. Today we know that climate change will affect the health of people directly (increased heat waves, extreme weather events and natural disasters) and indirect (unsafe sources of food and drinking water, change in the pattern of diseases), but there are serious limitations to predict the extent of damage using current data. In order to face this problem, governments have been using a set of estimates called "Climate Change Scenarios" to guide their actions and policies, thus preventing the effects of increased temperature on water resources, food availability, economic activities and quality of life of people. As health professionals, as well as prepare to meet the various pathologies associated with climate change, we must also become stakeholders focused on minimizing its effects, establishing prevention and damage control, ensuring a better place to live to our future generations.

Important facts:  Smoke Free Places: Smoking is prohibited in all enclosed public places, enclosed workplaces, and public transportation. In addition, smoking is prohibited within the outdoor premises of health and educational institutions. The hotel rooms and public spaces are smoke free. You will only be able to smoke on outdoors, designated areas.  Electricity plugs: Electricity in Peru is 220 Volts and 60 Hertz (cycles per second). About Trujillo The Pre Regional Meeting 2017, will be held in Trujillo, which is the capital of La Libertad department, located at an altitude of 34 meters and 5 km from the Pacic Ocean, is one of the most beautiful and harmonic cities in the country. It is known like the city of the Eternal Spring because of the great weather that gives a wonderful environment. It is the third largest in the country after Lima and Arequipa coastal city. Meals Meals will be served in the Venue. The breakfast will be served at the Hotel. We have included several traditional foods that you should not miss if you visit Peru.

Peruvian cuisine Peruvian cuisine is the result of the initial melting of the culinary tradition of ancient Peru, with its own techniques and potajeswith Spanish cuisine in its variant most strongly influenced by 762 years of Moorish presence in the Iberian Peninsula, with a significant contribution culinary customs brought from the Atlantic coast of sub-Saharan Africa by slaves. Thereafter, the mixing was influenced by the culinary uses and customs of the French chefs who fled the revolution in their country to settle in number, in the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru. Equally crucial was the influence of immigration of the nineteenth century, which included ChineseCantonese, Japanese and Italian, among other mainly European origins.

Cebiche: Perhaps the typical Peruvian dish best known internationally. The basic ingredients of any cebiche in Peru are pieces of fish, lemon juice, pepper, onion and salt. You can add other ingredients such as chopped cilantro and celery. It can be served accompanied by boiled sweet potato, highland field, corn, weed and lettuce leaves. Aji de gallina: It consists of a thick cream made of milk, bread and broth is added to cooked and shredded chicken. It served with potatoes and / or rice. TallarĂn saltado: Dish is a combination of boiled noodles with salt with a little juices prepared in a pan with hot oil in which the meat previously seasoned with salt, pepper, and cumin ajinomoto browns. To this is added red onion tomato and onion chopped Chinese. And you add soy sauce, salt and season to taste.

Lomo saltado: This is a dish made with pieces of meat, which must be properly seasoned in a pan with salt, pepper, cumin, garlic, soy sauce, comes with fries. It is usually accompanied by rice.

Causa: Rich dish made on the basis of yellow potatoes kneaded with oil like Pure, it is added to the mixture, lemon, chopped pepper, salt and pepper to taste. It can be stuffed with tuna.

Papa a la huancaina: One of the tastier and known Peruvian dishes, cream sauce is made by grinding or blending yellow pepper with milk, oil, crackers and cheese is usually served over boiled potatoes and served with rice. Papa rellena: Delicious dish consisting of a mass of cooked potato, wrapped around a filling made with beef, onions, olives and hard boiled eggs, all these chopped. It served with rice.

Post RM Cuzco January 22nd â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 25th The Post Regional Meeting will be held in the city of Cuzco, located in the center and south of Peru, archaeological capital of America and cultural heritage of humanity.
