Introduction and discount scheme

There has never been a more exciting time to get involved in sport. Everyone knows about the physical and mental benefits of taking part in sport, but it can be even more rewarding and exciting to get involved as the coach or official or to support and develop a sports club. With London 2012 on the horizon, it’s the perfect time for more people to learn, enjoy and succeed in sports, but our sports clubs can only be as good as the people who make them work. Brent Council’s Sports and Parks Service is committed to investing in local sports clubs and community groups by training and developing more sports coaches, officials and volunteers. There’s a huge choice of courses and workshops to choose from, so please read on to find out more. For some courses, you may also be eligible for additional contributions towards your course fees. This workshop identifies the benefits of opening up your sports club, to include a wider membership base - meaning more coaches, players, officials and increased revenue, improved eligibility for lottery funding, and quality ratings such as Clubmark; whilst ensuring the involvement and support of the local community. The ‘a club for all’ workshop outlines how your club can benefit from reaching all members of the community, and explains how to reach out to them - young people, older people, those on low incomes, disabled people and people from ethnic minorities. By the end of the workshop participants will be able to: • • • • • •

explain what “sports equity” means list the benefits of sports equity for your sports club or organisation identify equitable and inequitable practice identify key equity challenges for your sports club or organisation identify the steps you may need to take in your own club or organisation to start a basic action plan for equity identify the organisations that can help you and provide further guidance on sports equity.

To book your place please complete and return the booking form on page 14.

What is the difference between ‘a club for all’ and ‘equity in your coaching’ workshop? These workshops have been produced for two different audiences: • •

A club for all is designed to be attended by volunteers in a club. The tutor will use club management and administration examples to help the volunteer club member understand the benefits of opening up their club to the wider community and being equitable in their membership and club practices. Equity in your coaching is designed to be attended by a sports coach. The tutor will use coaching examples to help coaches understand how they, as a coach in their coaching practice, should be equitable in their language and actions towards different people.

NB: It’s really important that the same person doesn’t attend both workshops as materials covered in the introduction, (outlining what sports equity is and why it’s so important) are very similar.
