Brent’s biggest celebration of books and reading returns to the libraries this autumn to coincide with Black History Month, Children’s Book Week, Halloween and the Family Learning Festival. 1
Welcome to Word Up! Brent Libraries is proud to introduce you to this year’s Word Up! programme – the biggest celebration of books, reading and learning in the borough. This year’s programme offers author talks, drama, film, family activities, craft workshops and more. Word Up! includes something for children, families, young people and adults. I’m delighted that excellent writers and authors such as Tim Butcher, Colin Grant and Chris Salewicz will be speaking in our libraries. Top performers and entertainers such as Felix Dexter and Kwame M.A. McPherson will also be here to inspire and entertain you as well as musicians of the calibre of Lascelles James. Word Up! is offering you the opportunity to learn more about business, improve your skills, employment chances or get some money-saving tips and learn to be a little more thrifty with free author talks, workshops, advice days and events in our libraries. For children there will be many wonderful reading, craft and learning activities with Rachel Rose Reid, Sophie Herxheimer and others as well as special talks, drama and events for schools. Brent Museum has activities for families again this year and for adults some fascinating talks as part of the programme. This is an exciting time for Brent’s library service and I hope to see as many of you as possible enjoying Word Up! this autumn in our modern vibrant libraries. Thursday 27 September Tales from the Liars’ League 6.30pm-7.30pm Kilburn Library An evening of stories read aloud to celebrate the publication of London Lies, Urban Tales from Liars’ League. London Lies features short stories from 19 writers showcased at the Liars’ League – London’s coolest live literature event. Stories feature wrestling hippos, being propositioned by a frog, brawls on the Underground to postapocalyptic cat care. Readers include Clare Sandling, Emily Cleaver, Katy Darby, and Laura Williams. Adults only.
Saturday 29 September Work and play family day 12.30pm-4.30pm Ealing Road Library 2pm-3.30pm Improve your confidence for interviews with a workshop led by performance poet Neal Zetter. 2.30pm-4pm Making things is playing and working at the same time! Make something surprising out of nothing much with artist Sophie Herxheimer while she shares stories of some funny lazy lads and lasses in fairy tales, and a few hardworking magical creatures. Over 5s. Plus face painting and food stalls. 3.30pm-4.30pm Striking Women A talk and Q&A on Asian women and British labour history from Grunwick to the Gate Gourmet dispute by Professor Ruth Pearson, and Dr Sundari Anitha. Ealing Road Library is hosting an exhibition about the famous Grunwick strike from 22 September to 7 October. 1-7 October Brent is celebrating Children’s Book Week again this year with events and activities in the libraries for youngsters. Monday 1 October Bookstart story and rhyme times for under 5s 10.30am-11.15am Harlesden Library Plus Bookstart Bear will be prowling around the libraries, meeting children and under fives as part of Children’s Book Week. Come along to find out a little more about this fascinating subject from two experienced working astrologers who have practised and taught astrology to beginners and advanced students for many years. They will explain the birth chart and how astrology explores character and circumstances within our horoscope helping us to find new ways to view and live life to the full.
Friday 12 October Tim Butcher Blood River: A Journey to Africa’s Broken Heart 6pm-7pm Willesden Green Library Part adventure travel diary and part historical narrative, Blood River by writer and national newspaper correspondent Tim Butcher retraces HM Stanley’s famous 1874 expedition of the Congo River. He discusses his own intrepid journey following the heart of The Congo River and a 44-day adventure through some of Africa’s most dangerous regions, many untraveled in decades. Blood River was selected for the Richard and Judy Book Club. Books for sale and signing.

Autumn fun and health days Saturday 13 October Autumn fun day 11am-4pm Kilburn Library Celebrate the turning of the seasons and the charm of autumn at a seasonal fun day. As well as face painting and raffles prizes the day includes: 10.30am-11am Owl Babies Bookstart story and rhyme time fun. Under 5s. 11am-1pm Going green for autumn Family learning story and workshop. Learn more about how to recycle, reuse and recreate.

She discusses planting spring and summer flowering bulbs, how to extend colour in the garden, lawn care and preparing the garden for colder weather ahead. She will also take part in a gardeners’ Q&A. 2.30pm-4pm Colour of autumn Story and craft workshop with children’s artist and illustrator Sophie Herxheimer. Tuesday 16 October Nutrition for the winter 2pm-3pm Kilburn Library Brent-based nutritional therapist Antonia Maguire suggests some diet and lifestyle changes that can help ward off colds and flu over the winter season and improve your immunity. Her natural nutritional therapy practice is based on the interaction between a person’s biochemistry, physiology and the food they eat. Tuesday 23 October Ellen Craft performance 11.15am-12.15pm Willesden Green Library 1.30pm-2.30pm Town Hall Library Historical drama capturing the amazing story of Ellen Craft who escaped slavery in Georgia in the 1840s by posing as a white man to flee. She and her husband fled to the slave-free North in the United States disguised as her husband William’s slave master. Together they risked everything – even death – for freedom. By kind permission of the Museum of London Docklands in association with Spectrum Drama. For adults and invited school classes, key stages two to four. Write Start 5.45pm-7.45pm Town Hall Library A fun and friendly taster workshop for those of you who are new to creative writing and want to try it out for the first time. This workshop will give you a taste of the essentials of writing and how workshops work. Through exercises, reading and discussion, you will explore ways of writing that bring a story alive in the reader’s mind, approaches to creating characters and writing arresting dialogue. In a small group and in a relaxed but focused setting, you will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions, get to know fellow participants and get writing.

Monday 1 October Friday 5 October Sea Horse An enchanting tale of friendship without bounds. A horse and his boy are guided by the song of a shell. Where will their journey take them? And what will they find at its end? Award-winning author and illustrator Karin Littlewood launches her beautiful and charming new picture book in Brent Libraries with a reading followed by a fun craft workshop. Suitable for primary school students in years two to five. Tuesday 2 October Wednesday 3 October Author and illustrator Simon James Award-winning children’s author and illustrator Simon James will entertain children with selected stories from some of his hugely popular books. He will explain how he became an author and illustrator and share some of his sketchbooks and materials that support his work. Simon’s books include Leon and Bob, Sally and the Limpet, George Flies South, and Dear Greenpeace. Suitable for primary school students in years two to five.
Thursday 25 October Rastamouse and the Easy Crew Entertaining author Michael De Souza, one half of the writing duo with Genevieve Webster, will delight children with the adventures of the highly acclaimed Rastamouse and the Easy Crew in an enjoyable storytelling and drama workshop. Suitable for primary school students in years three to six.
Tuesday 9 October No Place to Hide: How I Put Black in the Union Jack Former professional British boxer and current trainer and mentor, Errol Christie, talks about racism in both boxing and Britain in the 1970s and 1980s. Errol was captain of the English boxing team from 1980 to 1983, becoming European champion in 1983. He published his biography No Place to Hide in 2010 in collaboration with former BBC TV producer Tony McMahon. Suitable for secondary school students.

Tuesday 16 October Wednesday 17 October Walter Tull’s Scrapbook, Respect! Night Flight Michaela Morgan’s Walter Tull’s Scrapbook is a fictionalised account of the real story of a black British hero who history almost forgot. Tull was an orphan who became a top footballer and the first black officer in the British Army before dying in battle during the First World War.
