As well as winning the trophy, she will now play a solo at the BMS Junior Fest in July. Danielle began piano lessons when she was 10, and also plays the cello in Brent Youth String Orchestra. She loves every kind of music, and particularly admires Michael Jackson for his originality and presence. Brent to press ahead with radical libraries programme Members of Brent's Executive have approved plans to transform the council's library service by closing six libraries and improving and enhancing the existing six to make them better equipped to meet the needs of residents. The six libraries that will now close are: • Barham Park • Cricklewood • Kensal Rise • Neasden • Preston • Tokyngton Brent's remaining libraries will be radically improved. This will include being open seven days a week, a comprehensive range of books, E Books and audio, free Wireless and Internet access and an online reference library. The libraries will also become "community hubs" with activities and learning opportunities to meet the needs of the diverse communities they serve. The Library Transformation Project has been subject to a three month consultation which invited residents to comment and give their views on the proposals. There were
also chances for residents to put their views directly to library staff and elected members at public meetings around the borough. The consultation ended on 4 March and since then the council has been carefully analysing the results and has taken on board many of the suggestions and views of both library users and non-users. As well as inviting comments, the council also made it clear that it would be open to any suggestions from groups interested in taking over the control from the council of any libraries threatened with closure.

Trevor Anthony McBean Scott – better known as TT Scott – has been performing reggae around the world for the last 48 years. Despite having a number one hit in France, ’The Angel Listening’, he’s probably better known on the streets of Harlesden where he lives. Photo LIONEL SHOY Would you say reggae is in your blood? I came to this country from Jamaica in 1963 and was brought up by my grandparents. Back in Jamaica I was the lead singer at my school and the church choir, and I carried on singing when I came over here to St Augustine’s school in South Kilburn and Wesley Road school in Stonebridge. At St Augustine’s I started to harmonise, because everyone was singing in the same key. My grandfather was the first jazz singer in Jamaica, so I guess I was always going to be a singer.
How did your recording career begin? I was 19 and won a singing contest at The 31 Club (Hillside) when I got spotted. I ended up signing for Pama Records (now Jet Star), who released my first record in 1968, called ‘Man on Top of The World’ and my second, ‘What Am I To Do Now’? I performed with the group Cultured Few on, ‘If Better No Come’ and the number one hit ‘If It Takes All My Life’, with the group T.D.J in Holland and Belgium. We also performed for Princess Grace and toured in Italy and Ireland. I’ve been involved in Brent’s Black History Month at the town hall for the last three years.
Where does the inspiration come from for your songs? Most of my songs are poems. I don’t fantasise and write, I write about what’s happening around me. I enjoy performing. I get pleasure out of seeing the expression on people’s faces when the words of my songs reach out to them. I’d say my style of singing is classic reggae. I like to dance on stage as well. I remember the first time I tried combining the two was on stage at a dance hall in front of 500 people. I just closed my eyes and went for it.
What are your ambitions for the future? I’m performing at a concert in Jamaica soon, and I’d like to keep performing for a long time to come both here and in Jamaica. But my main goal is to set up my own recording studio back in Jamaica. MAY 2011

Lottery win for Fryent Country Park
Break out the bubbly. Brent Parks Service has successfully secured £47,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to restore Mason's Field, a former London Transport staff sports ground that forms part of the Fryent Country Park. Words NANCY LUDWIG. Photos NADIA ATTURA The HLF grant award means that Mason’s Field will now receive the improvements it badly needs including a brand new “bridge” walkway from the main park to give visitors better access to this outlying piece of land that was acquired by the council in 1995. Other planned improvements include restoring a meadow and developing a training course for the public on countryside awareness and

wildlife, both of which are also certain to vastly enhance Fryent Country Park and the experience of the large numbers of people who visit it every year. Work to improve Mason’s Field is scheduled to begin in late summer, early autumn with the help of volunteers from the Barnhill Conservation Group and the local residents association. fully completed by 2014. Sean Faulkner, head of Brent Parks Service, said: “We are thrilled to receive this much-needed funding to enable us to give Mason’s Field the care and attention it rightly deserves and improve the public’s access to this picturesque and often overlooked open space. I am also delighted that we can now go ahead with our plans to develop a countryside awareness
course for visitors which is something that we have had lots of requests for but until now haven't been able to provide.” Sue Bowers, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund for London said: “This exciting project will restore Mason’s Field as part of a landscape of meadows, hedgerows and countryside – protecting rare butterfly, toad and frog species. It will also open up this space by
providing better access for all and a programme of activities so that people can get involved in and learn about the wonderful biodiversity on their doorstep.” To find out more about Fryent Country Park or volunteering to help improve the parks and open spaces in Brent, call 020 8937 5619. INSPIRINGBrent
Countdown to London 2012 With little over a year to go until the greatest sporting show on the planet comes to London Brent communities are already being inspired by sport and celebrating the opportunities staging the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games brings. Food safety, catering and art may not be things you would normally associate with the Olympic Games, but they are just some of the activities youngsters have been learning about through the council’s Inspiring Brent programme for the London 2012 Games. So far six Inspiring Brent projects have been recognised for their success by being awarded the London 2012 Inspire Mark by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). This makes Brent one of the highest awarded Inspire Mark boroughs in the capital. TBM finds out more about some of the council’s award-winning projects.

Testimonies Testimonies art exhibition, in partnership with Brent Artists Resource, will record Londoners’ personal stories from the 1948 and the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Experts in oral history from the British Library and Sydney Olympics are involved in the project and there are plans to showcase Testimonies in Wembley Stadium and Wembley Arena. Lorenzo Belenguer, lead artist on the project, says: “If we want Londoners to play a bigger part in London 2012 they have to be shown how their experiences matter, that you don’t need to be a gymnast to be an integral part of the Games. By giving voice to Londoners’ personal memories about the Olympics, we’re showing what relationships they had, and will have with the Games matters.” The exhibition is due to be completed in June and will be on display at The Gallery at Willesden Green from 20 September until 14 October. Organised in two parts, This is Me explored fashion and identity with young people by getting them to create a short film. This is Harlesden involved a group of young people working with an artist to explore Harlesden’s identity, past and present, through photography, poetry and drawing. They then created two banners which are currently displayed at Harlesden Library Plus. Four Brent households needed Later this year the council will introduce a new waste collection service for all properties. The new system will increase the amount we recycle, reduce landfill and save money. We are looking for four Brent households to feature in the publicity over 12-months from September 2011 to help get the message across about how and when to recycle. You don’t have to be a committed environmentalist; in fact we’d like to hear from people who want to get better at recycling. Your household can include family, friends, lodgers and pets or, if you live alone, just you.
We will get back to you before the end of May. We may ask you questions about your household to ensure our campaign reflects the diversity of Brent.
To express your interest please send your name, daytime telephone number and email address to: streetcare@brent.gov.uk with the subject line – Four Brent households. Kilburn’s creative space A disused building on the South Kilburn Estate has been transformed into a studio, offering space for creative professionals to work from in return for training up some of Brent’s young people. Words ORLA SEDZE. Photos CARMEN KLAMMER and MARK MASSARO
Victoria Grant’s couture hats have graced the pages of Vogue and are sold in high end stores such as Harrods. Benjamin Stefanski has just signed a record deal and Bob Clarke has been involved in the production of prime time TV shows. These are just some of the 13 creative professionals who have descended upon the South Kilburn Estate bringing with them bags of talent to share with the young people of Brent. This lively and mixed crowd of industry professionals, made up of filmmakers, architects, sportswear designers and more, set up shop in the estate back in April and are now offering trainee opportunities to young people living in Brent. The tenants have each pledged to train a local young person in their trade in return for five months free rent in the studios which are just a stones throw from popular Queens Park – a trendy part of Brent known for attracting creative independent retailers. “The South Kilburn Studio is part of a
wider project to improve the area while it is being regenerated and unite the community through the arts,” explained Andy Donald, Director of Regeneration and Major Projects. Patrizia Victor a ladies sportswear designer and South Kilburn resident said: “I'm looking forward to working with my new trainee; they will help with the entire development of our next spring/summer 2012 collection, from fabric selection to prototype making and fitting sessions.” Jonathan Nyati, also from Kilburn, makes films and documentaries. He added: “I’m hoping to teach what I know and learn myself, while having my trainee by my side.” The studio doors are now open and young people, aged between 18 - 25 interested in learning one of the trades have been making applications since April. The chosen 13 will be announced in mid May. For more information visit www.southkilburnstudios.org

Brent on the box Don’t be surprised if you see your street the next time you change channels. Brent Council is promoting the borough on TV more than ever, and has even taken part in Channel 4’s, Big Brother’s Little Brother. MARTIN GAVIN looks at Brent on the box. Brent’s Customer and Community Engagement Department is responsible for making sure that people know what services are provided by the council and how to access them. The department’s communications team deals with the media, including making sure that Brent residents have as many opportunities as possible to listen, watch and read about the type of services the council provides. This is done through placing stories as well as responding to journalists. Examples include the successful BBC series, Saints and Scroungers, which was developed by production company Flame TV from an original idea from the council’s communications team. The show, which looks at benefit fraud and entitlement, has been commissioned by the BBC for a third series in the autumn.
Another success is the BBC series, Filthy Rotten Scoundrels. The council is currently working with Leopard Films on a second run of this daytime show that highlights the work of environmental health officers as they tackle fly-tipping, graffiti and other anti-social behaviour. Other slots this year have included a Panorama on the subject of sham marriages titled, My Big Fat Fake Wedding, featuring Brent’s registrars department. In February there was an ITV London Tonight feature on the illegal use of Blue Badges for parking that featured a joint police and council operation to catch offenders. One of the most unusual requests in recent years was for Brent’s Director of Registration and Nationality, Mark Rimmer OBE, to appear with George Lamb on Channel 4’s, Big Brother’s Little
Brother, discussing the law on marriage. Toni McConville, Director of Customer and Community Engagement, says: “We have a duty to make sure people know about services the council provides and media coverage is an important way of achieving this. Media coverage won’t always be flattering of course, but residents expect their council to be accountable. We try to add balance to less positive stories when appropriate by arranging factual statements or interviews with councillors. “Television coverage can reach thousands of Brent residents although allowing unrestricted access is a risk. We have to trust that the production companies will protect people’s identities and privacy, but more importantly we must trust in the quality and value-formoney of Brent’s services.”

Meet the BOAT lady Clare Henshaw is known to many youngsters in Brent as ‘the boat lady’. The reason behind her slightly strange nickname is that she’s one of three members of Brent Outreach Autism Team (BOAT) who help parents and staff working with young people diagnosed with autism. Clare was recently honoured with an Autism Educational Trust Award for her contribution to supporting children and young people on the autism spectrum. Photo NADIA ATTURA “I helped to launch Brent Outreach Autism Team (BOAT) nearly ten years ago, in 2001. Back then we only had 11 students in the borough needing help. Now we have over 250 pupils, families and staff on our books. Parents and children meet so many professionals, but with us the families and students only have to tell their story once. We don’t discharge children unless they move out of the borough or to a specialist setting, so some of our students have been with us for nine years or more. This provides continuity and reassurance for the families and the students themselves. We feel this continued involvement is vital, as the help a student and their family needs varies greatly as they grow older. But whatever we do, our aim is to make a positive difference to their education and wellbeing. My work can vary from visiting young people in the classroom to helping parents put in place support strategies at home, running training sessions for schools and meeting with a range of professionals from across Brent. I recently helped a very brave 14-year-old young person with Aspergers record a video to show all the staff in his school what the condition is like for him personally. I also helped a student in Year six who was not completing his
homework and the staff and his home life was becoming unsettled by this. We found out he really likes chess. So now, every time he hands his work in on time he gets a chess piece. Rewards are a good way of helping autistic children; it’s something that makes sense to them.
“They were the only children who seemed to make sense to me.” Although my background is in speech and language therapy, I knew quite quickly autism was what I wanted to specialise in. They were the only children who seemed to make sense to me.”
BOAT is based at Fawood Children’s Centre. Call 020 838 0513 or email b.o.a.t@fawoodcc.brent.sch.uk

What cat man drew “Louis Wain made the cat his own. He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look and live like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves.” H.G.Wells, 1925.
Louis Wain is one of Brent’s most famous artists. Best known for his distinctive cat illustrations, by the turn of the twentieth century he had become a household name, charming the Edwardian public with his eccentric ‘world of cats’. However, changes in public taste meant that Louis Wain’s art soon became unfashionable and it was not until the 1960s that there was any substantial revival in interest in his work. Louis William Wain was born in 1860, the eldest of six children. He attended The West London School of Art and, following his father’s death in 1880, worked as an illustrator to support the family. However, it was not until the illness of his wife, Emily, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after their marriage, that Louis Wain started drawing cats.To comfort and entertain his bedridden wife,Wain filled numerous sketchbooks with
humorous portraits of their pet cat, Peter, which his wife urged him to show to editors. In 1886,Wain’s big break when his illustration ‘A Kittens’ Christmas Party’ appeared in the Illustrated London News. By 1890, he was depicting cats wearing clothes, walking upright with exaggerated facial expressions, and enjoying human pastimes such as playing cricket or attending the opera. The ‘Louis Wain Cat’ parodied Edwardian society, and became incredibly popular with people of all ages. By the turn of the twentieth century, his pictures were appearing in comics, newspapers and magazines across Britain and in America. In 1917, the family moved to Brondesbury Road in Kilburn. It was during this time that Wain began to experience mental health problems, and in 1924 he was admitted to Springfield Hospital in Tooting, where he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Wain remained in hospital for the remainder of his life, moving to
Bethlem Royal Hospital in Southwark before finally settling in Napsbury Hospital near Saint Albans, where he continued to paint and sketch. He died on 4 July 1939, one month before his 79th birthday. His body is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Kensal Green. Brent Museum, in Willesden Green Library Centre, is hosting its first Louis Wain exhibition from 5 May until 29 October. The works on display have been supplied by Chris Beetles Gallery, St James’s, London, (www.chrisbeetles.com), the Bethlem Art and History Collections Trust and The Wellcome Library. Visitors to the exhibition will be among the first to contribute to the museum and archives new blog www.brentmuseumandarchives.word press.com.The blog also offers the opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes at Brent Museum and Brent Archives, and access information about upcoming events, activities and exhibitions. Road closures in Harlesden from May 2011 Thames Water will be carrying out major repairs in Harlesden from May for essential work to replace the Victorian water pipes. Because of the scale of the work and possible implications for traffic flow, Tubbs Road will close first. Traffic flow will be monitored and if the situation is acceptable the council will authorise the eastbound closure of Park Parade. The council will continue to monitor traffic flows and if the diversion is successful, essential maintenance work can begin on both sites during the periods identified below. The following traffic orders have been put in place to cover:
Closure of Tubbs Road 16 May 2011 – 25 June 2011 Park Parade will be closed to Eastbound traffic at the junction of High Street Harlesden and this will be diverted along the Harrow Road to Wrottesley Road. Traffic on Park Parade can only proceed westbound (one way operation).
Closure of Park Parade 16 May 2011 – 3 September 2011 Westbound traffic will be diverted through High Street Harlesden and into Station road. Eastbound traffic will be diverted into Craven Park Road and down Manor Park Road.
