Brent presented with ‘Host Borough for London 2012' flag On Thursday 2 June, London 2012 presented Brent Council with the ‘Host Borough for London 2012' flag to officially recognise that it will be a host borough during the London 2012 Games. Brent will host some of the men's and women's football matches at Wembley Stadium, including the finals, as well as the badminton and rhythmic gymnastics at Wembley Arena. Olympic champion and current world record holder for the triple jump, Jonathan Edwards, presented the flag to Cllr Ann John OBE, Leader of Brent Council. To cheer the presentation along, it took place against the backdrop of Brent Council's half-term Sportsability Club at Willesden Sports Centre. Sportsability is a multi-sports club for young people with physical and learning disabilities aged 8-18 providing them with an opportunity to participate in physical activity and sports. Cllr Ann John OBE said: "Receiving the flag is a step closer to the London 2012 Games arriving in London and here in Brent. Hosting the football at Wembley Stadium and the rhythmic gymnastics and badminton at Wembley Arena brings the Olympic Games right to the doorstep of our residents."

It’s fantastic to see how inspired people from Brent are about the Games, such as the young people from the Sportsability Club."

Easy things you can do to be green and save money Wouldn’t it be great if you could make your home or business greener and save money at the same time? The good news is that the two can go hand in hand. You can help the planet and your pocket by cutting back on energy and contribute to meeting the UK’s carbon targets. To know where to start we have put together a

‘Green Charter’ showing what the council does to be green, how it assists the public and what you can do to reduce energy, waste and water in your home or business. We will ask your opinion of the ‘Green Charter’ soon, so look out for it. For more information email environment@brent.gov.uk or call 020 8937 5380.

Stag Lane celebrates its outstanding features Ofsted have praised the Key Stage Three Pupil Referral Unit in Stag Lane, Kingsbury, giving it a ‘good' Grade 2 rating for its overall effectiveness following a recent inspection. The unit, which caters for up to 25 pupils aged 11 to 14 with the aim of reintegrating them back into mainstream education as quickly as possible, was given an outstanding rating for its care, guidance and support towards pupils and

the quality of partnership working with parents, carers and specialist agencies. The inspector reported that he left with “fond memories” and was impressed with what the pupils were achieving. He found that many of the students, when they left the unit, were working at close to levels expected for their age and outcomes were in excess of what might be expected given their starting points.

week and recycling the following week. At present we recycle 34 per cent of waste and we want to recycle more, aiming for 50 per cent in the short term, rising to 60 per cent. In future the council will accept many more items for recycling than we do at present. Dumping rubbish that could be recycled into landfills is expensive and

bad for the environment. It costs west London local councils £50 million each year and hits us all through our council bills. Around 32 per cent of this is food waste that could easily be recycled and composted. Toured with Amy Winehouse, starred in several TV shows, had over a million views on YouTube; Brent Summer University (BSU) graduate Heshima Thompson is paving the way for young performers. When did you start singing? I’ve been singing all my life, I’m sure I came out the womb performing. I was always singing, dancing and acting; I did it everywhere; at home, at church, at school, at community events. I was 13 when I was approached by the BBC to star in a documentary called Heart of Harlesden which was viewed by millions. That led to interest from major labels and TV producers.

What’s your advice for other young people? Anything is achievable. I always wanted to do music. The world doesn’t owe you anything but if you’re able to work hard, develop your talent into a skill and have the drive, focus and persistence, you will achieve what you want.

Born to perform You’ve taken part in BSU. What has that done for you? BSU gave me a platform to develop my skills. I did the acting, dance and singing classes, among others. They have varied courses and facilities for people with different interests. I’d advise youngsters to take advantage of it and start building their experiences in the things they want to do. Having BSU as a platform helped to develop and hone in on what I do. I’ve acted in EastEnders E20, Spooks Code 9, as well as starring in Prime Suspect, Casualty and The Bill. I’ve also toured with Amy Winehouse and have performed at the Grammys, MTV EMAs, MOBOs. Performing at such events has been inspiring and a great way to network and showcase my passions, as well as see the world.

What are you working on now? I’m currently finishing my debut album, touring, working on new acting projects, writing a sitcom and starting a performing arts school.

Where do you want to be in five years time? I’d like to think I would have sold millions of albums worldwide, touring my music globally, will be starring in and producing sitcoms and films and will be known as one of the best ‘triple threat’ acts. My performing arts school would have developed a lot of young talent and given them a fantastic platform and I would have continued to show the world that great things come from everywhere, especially the UK and especially Brent.

The borough’s budding footballers can now practice their skills on a fantastic new pitch that has been graced by French legend Michel Platini – and hope that some of his talent brushes off on them. The new hi-tech pitch in Woodcock Park, Kenton was donated to the council by UEFA and will be managed by Brent Council, St Gregory’s School and Middlesex FA for use by pupils and the wider community. Also at the official handover were Sir Trevor Brooking, the FA’s Director of Football Development and England and Fulham striker, Bobby Zamora, who both joined school pupils on the pitch to test out the new surface. They were later joined on the pitch by Michel Platini before each footballer then took a penalty, much to the delight of St. Gregory’s pupils and teaching staff. Brent Council Leader, Councillor Ann John OBE, was also pitch side, along with the newly sworn in Mayor,

Councillor Aslam Choudry and Brent's Chief Executive, Gareth Daniel. In her speech to the crowd of school children and members of the FA, Councillor John said: “I’m thrilled to welcome the legendary Monsieur Platini to our borough, and delighted children and families in Brent will enjoy this all-weather pitch for many years.” St. Gregory’s head teacher, Andy Prindiville, also spoke of his pride at welcoming such distinguished guests to his school for the unveiling. FA Chairman, David Bernstein said: “We love football in this country and like UEFA believe elite football cannot flourish without healthy grassroots – we need to raise the level of ability at the grassroots if we want to develop top players for the future. "This facility will allow local schoolchildren to fulfill their potential whilst offering the wider community of young people a first rate training and playing facility."

Best start for young children Over the next few months more Brent children’s centres will begin offering health and midwifery services such as breast feeding support, weaning and nutrition advice and help to give up smoking. Hundreds of parents use midwifery services every year at the Welcome Children’s Centre in Wembley. On offer are post-natal clinics, where midwives check the weight of babies and the health of their mums. There are also ante-natal clinics, home visits to mum and baby and help with arranging hospital visits and scans. Until now, parents at Welcome Children’s Centre have been the only ones in Brent able to use midwifery services through their centre but that is all about to change. Children’s centres offer health, early education and family support services to parents with children under the age of five. Typically, this includes speech and language support, child health clinics, parenting groups and Job Centre Plus and Citizens’ Advice sessions.

Faced with the need to make huge savings, Brent Council has reorganised children’s centres to ensure the 17 in the borough stay open for the immediate future. A number of changes are being introduced as part of the process. Services will continue to be offered to everyone who is eligible but more will be targeted at vulnerable families. This means that parents who need it most will get support. Sessions are being delivered more evenly across the local area so that every parent should be within a short journey of at least one children’s centre. And closer working between Brent Council and NHS Brent means that

over the next few months more children’s centres will offer health and midwifery services such as breast feeding support, weaning and nutrition advice and help to give up smoking. Sue Gates, Head of Integrated and Extended Services for Brent Council, said: “We want children to be better prepared for life and for meeting life’s challenges – physically, socially and emotionally. “All the research shows that the earlier you can support families with young children, the less serious the problems they face as they get older are. These changes will help give children the best start in life.” For more information email cfis@brent.gov.uk or call 020 8937 3001.

Get ready for the big change to your waste collection service

New bigger bins

New food waste containers

New mixed recycling

Why is Brent’s waste collection service changing? The shortage of landfill space means Brent has to pay a tax to dump everything we don’t recycle. That tax hits us all through our council bills and the tax rate is going up. So we have decided to change how we collect your waste so that more gets recycled. At present we recycle only 34 per cent of our waste and we want to raise that to 60 per cent. Our new waste collection service will: • help everyone in Brent to recycle new materials for the first time • give most residents a separate collection of food waste • send less waste to landfill, with less negative impact on the environment • save money on the tax that we pay to throw away valuable materials. Want to find out more? Visit www.brent.gov.uk/recyclemore With Brent’s new improved waste collection service we can all recycle more

www.brent.gov.uk/recyclemore

How will the waste collection service change? If you live in a house or a flat in a converted property and currently have a green box Dry recycling If you currently use a green box for recycling, from September you will receive a wheeled bin with a blue lid, just like the one in the picture below.

Green organics bins for food and garden waste Weekly collections

Organics recycling

New blue-topped recycling bins for mixed dry recycling Alternate weekly collections

All the materials that you currently recycle in the green box will continue to be collected. But for the first time you will be able to recycle mixed plastics containers, cardboard and cartons.

If you currently have a green organics bin, you will continue to use it for food and garden waste. The green organics bin will be collected every week. If you do not have a green organics bin, you will receive a new small container to collect food waste separately, like the one in the picture below. The food waste container will also be collected every week.

Landfill waste You will continue to use the grey wheeled bin for waste that cannot be recycled or composted. The grey wheeled bin will be collected on the alternate week to your dry recycling bin.

Grey wheeled landfill waste bins for non-recyclables Alternate weekly collections

The new recycling bin will be collected on the alternate week to your landfill waste bin (the grey wheeled bin). The new recycling service will be mixed. This means that recycling will be collected together and then taken away to be sorted.

Taking action on shisha Brent Youth Parliament (BYP) and NHS Brent have been working together on a campaign to raise awareness among young people about smoking shisha. BYP member and one of the campaign’s leading lights THIVYA JEYASHANKER describes the campaign and the short film the group produced about shisha. Shisha, for those of you who don’t know, is a water pipe used for smoking flavoured tobacco. It originated around 600 years ago in India and the Middle East and is still around today. A common past-time in Brent for young people is to smoke shisha, as some regard it as something sociable, while others a chance to relax. However, what these people are not aware of is the outcomes of smoking shisha. A lot of rumours about shisha are out there and it is time people are able to distinguish them from the truth. Brent Youth Parliament, NHS Brent and voluntary organisation Shishaware worked in partnership to produce a short film about shisha to raise awareness of the health effects of smoking shisha amongst young people. There was a workshop carried out by Shishaware with around 50 young

people, who are members of BYP, to develop their knowledge about smoking shisha. At the beginning of the workshop it was pretty clear that they didn’t really recognise the truth about shisha, which was highlighted when we did a true or false activity. In spite of this they were still aware that shisha did not have a positive impact on your health. BYP members designed, produced and helped edit the shisha short film ‘Shisha - Don’t be Fooled’. The short film is part of a resource pack for NHS Brent that is currently being delivered to all secondary schools in Brent. To find more information about Shishaware please visit: www.shishaware.org. To view the shisha short film, visit www.bmyvoice.org.uk/byp Please note, the shisha short film is not meant to scare or upset you it is just there to give you the facts. JULY/AUGUST 2011

Youngsters aged between four and 12 are invited to take part in the annual National Summer Reading Challenge (23 July - 4 September). The aim of this year’s challenge – called Circus Stars - is to get youngsters excited about books and help them discover the fantastic world of acrobats and clowns at the same time. As well as collecting stickers and other prizes in return for reading books of their choice, youngsters who successfully read six books will receive a medal and certificate at their local library. Yellow, blue and green Brent Council is working with partners in the public sector and major private companies to address climate change.

IKEA Wembley is one of the businesses working closely with Brent Council on the Climate Change Steering Group to improve sustainability and help make Brent one of the cleanest and greenest places to live in London. If you’re the world’s largest furniture store what do you do with several thousand tonnes of waste material each year? Recycle it of course, and at IKEA Wembley that means 91 per cent of everything used in the 33,000m2 store, including items taken back by customers for recycling. But Nuno Costa, one of the store’s managers responsible for sustainability is not happy. He wants that figure up to 98 per cent in a year’s time. “Our commitment to recycle and reuse is why we always try to walk the extra mile in order to put sustainability at the centre of our operations. We are not only recycling very effectively, which is very satisfying, but we’re making money by doing it, which helps us to keep costs down and prices low.” As well as the moral argument, the company has a convincing business case for recycling plastic, cardboard and other materials. Waste is processed and packed before leaving the Wembley store and then sold on for raw materials. The team is also studying the possibility of composting food waste on site. The Swedish company promotes recycling and furniture reuse via its website and in store, as well as educating staff and customers to think about sustainability. This includes donating old furniture to charity or passing it on to neighbours and friends when it is replaced. “At IKEA we strive to create a better everyday life for many people all over the world, and this means taking responsibility for the future of our world,” says Nuno. Brent Council is working with partners in the public sector and major private companies to improve the environment and address climate change. Carbon counting Jeff’s team works with council services and communities in Brent to deliver environmental sustainability in the borough. This includes everything from implementing the Climate Change Strategy to reducing carbon emissions and supporting Brent Sustainability Forum and Fairtrade.

Jeff says: “The team encourages reductions of carbon emissions in the borough particularly through cutting the amount of energy being used. We also encourage sustainable travel, waste reduction and thinking about the global impacts of what we do on the next generation. We are currently working across the council to achieve a 25 per cent reduction in the council’s carbon emissions by 2014. Soon the council will have to pay a new carbon tax, which is calculated based on the amount of energy it uses each year. Current estimates indicate that this could be £338,000 based on £12 a tonne of carbon. But this price is planned to rise annually up to £30 a tonne.

work

Finding ways the council can help local people to change the way they behave towards their environment is a priority for Jeff Bartley’s Environment Projects and Policy Team. We are working to reduce the amount of energy the council uses so that our bills become smaller. Cutting the amount of waste the council sends to landfill and reducing our water bills will also help to save money. We need to persuade individuals and organisations to change their behaviour to be more environmentally friendly and reduce greenhouse gases, as this is vital for future generations to be able to enjoy what we have now. The job has changed a great deal since I joined the council. There is much more emphasis on dealing with climate change, reducing the amount of energy used by the council, schools, residents and businesses as well as supporting links with the community on environmental issues. Fairtrade is now more actively supported by the council and Brent Sustainability Forum’s activities go from strength to strength.” Get involved with green issues through the Brent Sustainability Forum website at www.sustainablebrent.org.uk or attend the next meeting on 6 September, 7pm, Council Chambers, Brent Town Hall, Forty Lane.

SECREThistory

A very British celebration Events are taking place across London this summer to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain.

The festival centered around a national exhibition promoting the economic and social recovery of the country after the Second World War. The main celebration was held on the south bank of the river Thames, but other events were organised across Britain, including in Brent. At the time Brent was split into the two boroughs of Willesden and Wembley and each entered into the festival spirit with very different levels of enthusiasm. Willesden held events throughout the summer. Concerts and children’s entertainment were organised in its parks and 500 schoolchildren took part in a display of folk dancing. Many of the activities were planned to support the war-damaged economy and promote

feelings of progress and recovery, with local people even helping to tidy up bomb-sites. In September a special shopping week was held to promote local business. The Willesden festival programme would have been fuller but it was badly affected by adverse weather, with street parties drenched in torrential rain, and some events called off. Wembley Borough Council, on the other hand, elected not to undertake any official festival activities. The sole celebration to take place was a stage production of Merrie England by the Wembley Philharmonic Society. A complaint to the local newspaper bemoaned the lack of festival spirit

in the borough. This summer the Southbank Centre is hosting events for the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain, and Brent Museum will be taking part by holding an indoor street party at Willesden Green Library Centre on Wednesday 24 August, 1-4.30pm. The centre will also join in the fun at Southbank on Sunday 28 July, where Brent residents will mark the celebrations of 1951 with a display of Indian folk dancing.
