Brent Council is very proud to welcome you to this new and exciting programme celebrating great books and reading during the month of October. There is something interesting, informative and fun for everyone with a wide range of events and activities in all our libraries and Brent Museum. Highlights include: queen of British ska and lead singer for platinum selling 2-tone band The Selecter, Pauline Black, and a riveting talk on the king of pop Michael Jackson the health information event, Chill Out, which features a range of health authors, workshops, pampering, stalls and special guest, life coach Tony Harrison talks from former Zimbabwean cricketer Henry Olonga and trail blazing boxer Errol Christie, as they discuss their new biographies a panel of successful British Asian authors at ImaginAsian, a celebration of Asian culture which will also feature Bollywood dancing, fun workshops, pampering and stalls 2
acting legend Earl Cameron discussing his long acting career and being the leading Black British actor for more than five decades the welcome return of Phil Vasili with a film screening and talk on black British footballers of the past the return of the Rastamouse authors to their Brent roots to celebrate Rastamouse Day a Halloween party featuring scary stories from children’s author David Grimstone and best selling adult author from the dark side Thomas Emson, children’s activities, fun workshops, pampering and stalls. All events are free except where otherwise stated. Family Learning: Children must be over five and accompanied by an adult (based on one adult with a maximum of two children). Monday 3 October Bookstart story and rhyme times for under 5s 10.30 – 11.15am Harlesden Library Plus 2.15 – 3pm Preston Library The Bookstart Bear will be popping into libraries to visit children under five as part of Children’s Book Week celebrations. www.bookstart.org.uk Tuesday 4 October The African experience in wartime Europe 11am – 1pm Willesden Green Library When Hitler’s Nazi Party came to power in March 1933, there were an estimated 24,000 citizens of African descent in Germany. Freelance writer and Brent resident Akin Shenbanjo Jr, tells the story of their perilous existence under Nazi rule in which they would face persecution, forced sterilization, imprisonment and murder. To end, there will be a focus on African-American and British colonial troops where a war was fought on two fronts; against the immediate menace of the Nazi war machine, while burdened with the indignities of a deep-rooted institutional racism within the United States, and British armed forces.

Tuesday 4 October Pauline Black: Black by Design 7 – 8.30pm Harlesden Library Plus Lead singer for platinum-selling 2-tone band, The Selecter, Pauline Black has been in the music business for over 30 years. The only woman in a movement dominated by men, she was very much the queen of British Ska. Black was born in 1953 to Anglo-Jewish/ Nigerian parents. Adopted by a white, working class family in Romford in the fifties, Pauline was always made to feel different. Weaving her rise to fame with her moving search for her birth parents, Black By Design is a funny and enlightening memoir of music and roots.

The Greenhouse @ Willesden....Where Great Things Grow The Greenhouse @ Willesden is a new temporary animation and cultural programme developed by Brent Council. Creative people who would like to showcase their talent, hold an event, workshop or exhibition of work, are invited to participate in this programme. Applicants may alternatively bring a business along and sell something or visually change the space all together. The programme is for anyone who can provide some form of engaging or inclusive exchange between an audience and themselves which can be enjoyed by all the family.
