Clare named Citizen of the Year by Rick Lemyre Staff Writer
Gene Clare was just doing what he always does last weekend: supporting people. Still feeling the effects of a fall from his roof last December, the director of alternative education for the Liberty Union High School District nonetheless propped a pillow under his right arm to protect his shattered rib cage and, along with wife Gretchen, headed out to honor the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year (Brentwood Fine Meats) and welcome the Chamber’s new board. But before things got around to owners Bill Harris and Greg Karkas, and before the new members of the board were introduced, there was one other piece of business to take care of, and Clare heard himself announced as Brentwood’s 2009 Citizen of the Year. “We were extremely surprised, very surprised,” Clare said. “There were probably a dozen people in that room that were

dedication to charitable causes. In Clare’s case that would include Brentwood Rotary (he’s an eight-year member and past president), the Police Activities League
(board member), the Brentwood Youth Commission (co-founder and current board member), and the annual Community Chest Christmas Basket program (chief potato bagger). Previous honorees have also been big on education, and in Clare’s case (in addition to his current role) that means a decade as Liberty High School principal, helping to found and serve as a director for CLARO, a computerlearning charity, and providing support for A Place of Learning tutoring center. And a few citizens of the year have been active in the public sector, which in Clare’s case means being instrumental in keeping the East Bay Works job center in Brentwood, serving on the board of Tri Delta Transit, and even running for City Council in 2006. But while many of his activities mirror those of previous honorees, some of the things that qualified Clare for the honor do not. He’s provided inspiration for see Clare page 18A

Report: downtown needs restaurants by Rick Lemyre Staff Writer
What a vibrant downtown business district might consist of has been given a little more clarity, but putting all the pieces together remains a significant challenge. A report from the consulting firm Metrovision Brokerage was delivered to the City Council Jan. 13 suggesting a number of uses the city should focus on to increase traffic in the city’s traditional business core. They include restaurants – especially those offering live music and special events – entertainment, recreational and equipment supplies, tabletop accessories such as gifts and antiques, video and computer stores, and financial services. Of those categories, restaurants will play the key role, the report says. Unique locations can successfully compete with those in other areas, and people coming to the downtown to eat or be entertained there will help

Prevot’s restaurant on First Street does a brisk business on Monday. A new report says the downtown area needs more such establishments to thrive. support the other uses. “The challenge facing the downtown, however, is that most of the current structures will require substantial tenant improvements and/or financial investments … because of the high cost of upgrading buildings to current fire, building, plumbing and accessibility codes and
laws,” Economic Development Director Linda Maurer wrote in the staff report accompanying the Metrovision analysis. An example, Maurer said Monday, is the recently vacated craft store on Oak Street. Its sewer line runs through the center of the building, and major work would be required to move
the line to accommodate the kitchen and bathrooms needed for a restaurant. In other cases, the challenges aren’t even known. “In some of these old buildings, we don’t even know where things are,” she said. see Report page 18A

Seen at the Inauguration Far East County was well represented at the historic inauguration of President Barack Obama, and some of the pilgrims even brought their Hometown Weekly Newspaper along for the occasion. Heather Partida and the Brentwood Press, right, joined the 1.8 million frigid souls stretching from the Capitol balustrade to beyond the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 20 to watch the inauguration. Other mall mavens from East County were Brentwood resident Sheilah Cunningham, center, and Gregory Simpson, who took the picture. They not only witnessed the big event but amassed an im-Press-

Sarah Singrin of the LUHSD reports that 2004 Freedom High School graduate Allison Bell participated as a member of the Air Force Presidential Honor Guard, and escorted a diplomatic party to the ceremony. Freedom High School junior Josh Lanter, Liberty High School sophomore Niya Davis, and 2008 Liberty High School graduate Christina Mock all attended the ceremony. Freedom teacher George Chilcott reported that his eighth-grade son Jordon attended by invitation from the People to People Organization, and 2001 Freedom High graduate Andrew Lindsay, who currently works in Washington, D.C. as an intern for Homeland Security, was also in attendance.

Local authors to share Dust off your purple published works, advice Name a writer from the Bay Area who has published a novel in the past five years. Name one from Contra Costa County. Better yet, name one from far East County. If you’re stumped, Leonard Roudman can help. Each year Roudman, senior community library manager, brings a Bay Area author to the Brentwood Library to discuss the satisfaction and challenge of the writing process. This Tuesday, Feb. 3, not one but five authors will be in attendance for this year’s author program, and all come from the Delta area. “I don’t think many people realize how many authors there are who not only live in the Bay Area but live in this part of Contra Costa County,” said Roudman. “I try to get at least one author to come out to the library every year, but this year the flood gates just opened and several authors got in touch with me. More people are finding ways to get their work published.” The mission of the Brentwood Library is to promote literacy and encourage people to fall in love with reading again or for the first time. Roudman said part of that process is promoting writing, and an event like this is educational for novice writers looking for that first break as well as entertaining for the average literature fanatic. “It’s neat to hear the authors’ stories, but these talks are also encouraging for aspiring authors,” Roudman said. “I like to give local authors this fo-

rum since so many people try their hand at writing these days and are interested in getting published. This event is to celebrate the successes of our local writers as well as provide encouragement to those who are still in the early stages of the writing process.” The featured authors come from various backgrounds and write for different genres, so attendees will be exposed to several perspectives on writing. Each author will give a 10-to-12 minute presentation, followed by a group question-and-answer session. The event will include presentations from Paul Cardoza, who got the idea for his crime novel “Take and Seek” after working as a fingerprint technician for the Contra Costa County’s sheriff office in the 1980s, while Susan Tikalsky will share a more personal story with “A Prayer Journal Through Mental Illness.” Brentwood Poet Laureate Diane Lando will be there to discuss her coming-of-age novel “The Bentwood Creek Chronicles,” and Mel Stolhand will discuss “Changing Seasons,” a novel about a girl growing up during World War II. Finally, local author and publisher Vicki Ward will give a presentation about her latest work in “Life’s Spices From Seasoned Sistahs: A Collection of Life Stories from Mature Women of Color.” The program will be held in the Blue Room at the Brentwood Community Center, 730 Third St. Presentations begin at 7 p.m. For more information, call 925-634-4101. Car thief makes weird trade-in by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer When Wendy Boatwright’s car was stolen out of her driveway late last week, the Brentwood resident figured her 1997 Mustang was gone for good. But in a classic case of truth being stranger than fiction, Boatwright’s car was indeed recovered – but not by local authorities. The rag top convertible was returned by the thief. “How funny is that?” asked Boatwright, who says she has no idea who the thief is. “Somebody steals my car and then decides it’s not good enough and returns it? That’s a first for me.” And a first for the Brentwood Police Department as well. When an officer arrived at Boatwright’s home to take her report, she admits to being flummoxed. “The officer looked at me and said, ‘I hope this isn’t a joke,’” said Boatwright. “And I thought, ‘What is he talking about?’ It turns out my car was parked on the backside of my house on a side street. The thief had taken it and then decided he didn’t want it, I guess, and brought it back.” Proving that even thieves can be thoughtful, the robber, who had snuck into Boatwright’s house the night before and kyped her key ring, removed the car key and left it on a rock in her driveway along with her emergency roadside kit, presumably after he brought back the car. But mystery doesn’t end there. While the officer was taking Boat-

The officer initially thought it was just a coincidence that two cars had been stolen on the same street, but when the Toyota Camry was later recovered a few miles away, the suspect was found standing by the white Camry with Boatwright’s house keys in his pocket. Another case of silly criminals caught in the act? “Yes, this is definitely one of those stories,” said Sgt. Sergio Verbis. “We get those occasionally. But all’s well that ends well, and that’s how we like them.” The 28-year-old suspect was booked into the county jail in Martinez, where he
remains on two counts of grand theft, possession of stolen items and burglary. Why the thief returned her Ford and swapped it for the neighbor’s Toyota is likely to remain a secret, but as for Boatwright, she’s just happy to have her car back safe and sound. “I’m guessing that he liked the Camry better than my old Mustang,” said Boatwright of her 13-year-old car. “It is kind of beat up, there’s no stereo, the engine light goes on all the time, and top is taped and torn, so I guess he decided to dump it for something better. I didn’t know that thieves were so picky. But that’s OK. I’m just glad to have it back; it’s the only car I’ve got.”

1031 WARNING Summit Accommodators 1031 Exchange filed for bankruptcy recently. Summit is an “accommodator” of 1031 exchanges. A 1031 is where a real estate investor exchanges one investment property for another, and if they follow the rules, their capital gains taxes are deferred. One of the rules is that the investor cannot take possession of the funds from the sale of the first property before they buy the second property. This means they have to hire another company who takes possession of their money on their behalf until the replacement property is purchased. We are talking about large sums of money, here. From hundreds of thousands, to possibly millions of dollars for some transactions. Most of these clients are just looking for somewhere “safe” to park their money in order to follow the 1031 rules. They are usually much more concerned with the return OF their money than the return ON their money. Therefore, many 1031 accommodators deposit their clients’ funds into bank accounts insured by the federal government (FDIC insured).
Photo courtesy of Patriot Sentinel Riders
Patriot Sentinel Riders: supporting veterans The Patriot Sentinel Riders is a group of military veterans and supporters who ride motorcycles in direct support of active and inactive military veterans and their families. The Riders attend any activity relating to veterans. Their most n o t e wo r t hy accomplishments include ongoing maintenance of the Mare Island Naval Cemetery, facilitating the U.S. Army’s adoption of the City of Antioch, implementing installation of the American flag and POW-MIA flag at the Antioch Marina Veterans Memorial, implementing procedures at the Antioch Post Office for flying the POW-MIA flag on certain holidays, and partnering with the City of Antioch in planning the Memorial Day ceremony and the first-ever Veterans Day parade. The group also visits veterans at area
veterans’ hospitals, and attend military funerals. Future plans include newspaper articles profiling veterans and preparing fundraisers to respond to the needs of veterans. The Patriot Sentinel Riders also support and attend other veteran clubs and organizations events. According to Delta Chapter President Larry “Gator” Thomas, “oftentimes we are mistaken or confused with the Patriot Guard, who primarily perform military escort and guard duty. Nonetheless, we are all veterans and our cause remains the same, which is to recognize and help, or assist, any and all military veterans and their families when and where needed, and respond accordingly.” Thomas said that those interested in joining the Patriot Sentinel Riders, and ride a motorcycle, should visit the Riders Web site at www.patsentriders.org, contact a current member for an application, or write to P.O. Box 4472, Antioch, CA 94531. Contributed by The Patriot Sentinel Riders. Updates on the organization’s efforts to support veterans will appear monthly in the Press.
The problem is that the 1031 accommodation industry doesn’t have much regulation or oversight, so these companies have some wide latitude as to where they deposit their clients’ money. It turns out that Summit was investing their clients’ funds into what turned out to be incredibly risky real estate development deals that went south. At this point I’m not sure if Summit was passing this idea off as being “safe” to their clients, or if their clients were just drawn to the promise of higher returns on their money and didn’t do their due diligence. Whichever it was, it’s a good lesson for the rest of us. Ask if your 1031 accommodator is depositing your funds into FDIC insured accounts. If not, that should send up some red flags. Dentists and doctors and agents, oh my! by Elysia Cook Correspondent Pulling teeth, designing buildings and going undercover represent a smattering of the career paths showcased on Jan. 15 at Heritage High School’s inaugural Career Fair. A cornucopia of career reps gave event attendees valuable insight into the world of work. “The intent of the Career Fair and our academies is to offer guidance to students who are interested in focusing their coursework, ultimately linking them to employment or college opportunities after high school,” said Environmental Science Academy Coordinator and Heritage teacher Spencer Holmes. The event featured an open forum and presentations by each job professional. During the forum, audience members got to meet the professionals and talk with them one-on-one. “It was great,” said Dr. Eric Mariotti, a plastic surgeon who owns a private practice in Concord. “The initial MPR (Multi-Purpose Room) walk-around fair was very informative for the students,” said Sarah Kaplan, Mariotti’s Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C). “Everyone and their parents had a lot of questions, mostly about the schooling involved.” Heritage junior Melany Del Carpio appreciated the “different fields of work and professionals who could talk to you

I would go again next year, because even though I don’t know what I want to be (when I’m older), I’d like to see the variety of different professions.” Attendees also took advantage of more in-depth presentations following the forum. Many of the presenters gave advice that pertained not just to their profession, but how to succeed anywhere in life. “If you don’t get into the school of your choice, don’t give up,” said Lance Crannell, who works for SDG Architects, Inc. “Get involved in college career academy programs over the summer. They allow you to really immerse yourself in what you want to do.” Bill Scanlon, an FBI agent based in San Francisco, shared some tips on how to gain an advantage in the workplace. “Knowing a
second language really helps,” he said. And for aspiring FBI agents, “Having a computer science degree is also a great advantage.” Career Fair coordinators hope to make the event a tradition. “For a first-time event, it was very successful,” said Engineering Technology Academy Coordinator Laurie Laprade. “It’d be nice to see it grow in the
sense of the number of represented fields each year, and maybe turn it into a college and career fair eventually. “The whole idea of the fair was so that the kids could understand that the classes they take in high school are a taste of what they’ll get in college – and eventually a career,” Laprade added.
Lend a hand to the band Heritage High School Band Director Steve Ernest is looking for donations of instruments for the school’s music program. The instruments must be in good condition. Due to the lack of funding as a result of state budget cuts, the program can not
afford to purchase the instruments from potential donors. Any donations are accepted, but vibraphone, chimes and gong are especially needed. Call Ernest at 925-634-0037, ext. 6050 or e-mail ernests@libertyuhsd. k12.ca.us.

Good will toward kids
A Moral Dilemma Before diving too deep into this subject, let us make it very clear that I am not suggesting, or leaning one way or another, rather, simply supplying information. And when I say “information” I do not mean legal advice – please CONSULT WITH A BANKRUPTCY SPECIALIST AND TAX ADVISER as this IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A PRIMER ON HOW TO AVOID YOUR DEBTS AND LOAN LIABILITY. So with that disclaimer, let’s get right into the thick of things and touch base on California’s anti-deficiency law - a law that originated during the Depression years to protect the banks, but is now doing just the opposite due to the rampant greed that kept them (the banks) from acting rationally in their own self-interest. You see California, as well as a handful of other states, have laws in place that allow a homeowner to simply walk away from their residence while not being held financially responsible for the debt they washed their hands clean of. In other words California has become the poster child for the “buy-and-bail” syndrome. As the numbers reflect, currently in California one out of every 204 loans has defaulted, many of you have either already had to, or will be, dealing with the moral dilemma of either letting your property go, or, according to Mr. Henry Paulson, “doing the right thing” and bleeding out your life-savings, IRA and credit card balances just to hold onto your house. Again, I’m not suggesting one way or another but let us be realists and come to grips with two very important facts when making any large financial decisions. First, it seems the only time we hear a fingerwagging lecture regarding money with con-
tent such as you “should”, or you “ought to”, is when it may be in your best interest to do the opposite; and second, the market will never function on moral obligations alone…this is capitalism, and money should work. Obviously though, right now, money is not working, and not working on an extreme level which has caused Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to actually rework their foreclosure policies in order to deal with the difficult Situation

on stage presence, vocal ability, crowd response, projection and overall performance. In the end, the judges and audience chose Megan Niber, who accompanied herself on acoustic guitar in “When It Rains” by Paramore, as the 2009 Liberty Idol. “I had a lot of fun!” said Niber. “I truly feel humbled to have won, and it feels the best to know that this was for such a good cause.” “It took me about a week to get my song down,” said Elwess, one of the finalists who played the guitar and sang
“Squeeze Box” by The Who. “I’ve played at Open Mic Night and Mr. Liberty before, but tonight I think I was really nervous.” “I did the best I could do and I have no regrets,” said Rosa, another finalist who rocked the socks off the audience with “Barracuda” by Heart. “I chose this song because this year I wanted to rock it out, and I had fun doing it!” “It felt good to be the first one up,” Butler said. In the finals, the sophomore got the audience to holding up its cell phones in a frenzied wave during her performance of “Alone” by Heart.

Freeze public-servant salaries Editor: I noticed that one of the new president’s first actions was freezing the salaries of White House staff (and here is the key) who make over $100,000 annually. I also noticed in the local paper that the local college chancellor is up for an 18-percent raise ($ 38,000) on top of her $209,000 salary. Who knows how many perks are added to that? Also, I remember looking up on the Internet the salaries of all the Contra Costa County employees (tinyurl.com/68dyes). The information is staggering. The county has several hundred employees making over six-digit-figure salaries. In fact, I noticed some in the $300,000 and even $400,000 salary range. This is absurd. When our economy is dependant on the taxpayer (you and I), these dollars do not reflect “public servants.” These salaries are “pots of gold” dished out from our tax dollars. While it is very true that we have extremely talented employees in the public sector, the need to pay these types of salaries is becoming very burdensome on our overall services. The excuses used by our public leaders are “If we do not pay more to this person, we may lose them to another agency.” This type of mythology is what is creating the “leapfrog effect.” One agency pays more so the competing agency pays more plus some (and the cycle continues), with the public taxpayer losing in all respects. In addition, the benefit retirement for these salaried employees becomes a “pyramid-type scheme.” The first people to retire will place the most burden on the system. The bottom employees will end up needing to be bailed out by us (the taxpayer) or negotiate less. This is happening right now in our county. We are trading public services for previous retirement needs due to the obscene salaries created by the “leapfrog effect.” I think the State of California and the counties should follow the new

president’s lead and freeze all salaries over $100,000. Also, the legislators or maybe a taxpayers’ association should sponsor a bill that restricts all raises to a cost-of-living scale. Moreover, any raises above the cost of living should be approved by the voters of the agency requesting the increase. If a public servant person can not live off of $1,925 plus benefits every week, that person needs to work in the private sector, where risk is not dependant on us (the taxpayer). Just like the housing market, this public-salary bubble is going to burst the county budget without action. John Gonzales Knightsen
Tires – and ballots – checked Editor: We cannot get off our minds a comment made on Jan. 9 in this newspaper by CSD Director David Piepho regarding the disastrous and negligent oversight by the CSD of Southwest Water and the spill that occurred under its watch. Director Piepho was quoted as saying, “It is unfortunate that it took this to fix things, but you don’t know your tires are bald until you get a flat tire.” Is this director saying it took an approximate 100,000gallon sewage spill (along with two other spills) to get him and the CSD Board to pay attention to what was going on, and it was only the numerous spills that woke them up? It is very apparent that this community has been “checking their own tires” as one is supposed to do, because the voters of this community took it upon themselves in the November election to replace two of the “bald tires” with Director Simon and Director Tetreault. The voters were allowed to replace only two of the four “bald tires,” but we are betting when 2010 comes around, the voters will be looking to replace other of the CSD Board members who sat on the board while Southwest Water went unchecked, causing the community to fail two facility inspections and make front-page news in every local newspaper. Dream event Editor: Politics aside, January 19, 2009 was a day not only to be immensely proud of the grandest of human experiments, American democracy, but a day to be proud of humanity’s promise. Antioch justly shared in that celebration. Bouquets to Council Member Reggie Moore for having the dream and for the team of tireless organizers who made the first-ever Antioch Martin Luther King Birthday Tribute happen. Happen it did. Coming from a baptism, I was five minutes late and scrambled

into the upper reaches of the balcony for a seat (luckily, no such thing as a bad seat at the vintage 1927 El Campanil Theatre). Minutes later it was standing room only in a theater seating 698. The organizers had hoped for 200 people and prayed for 300. Ah, sweet surprise. Crowd wasn’t the sole reason to color the event a success. If ever there was a mixed crowd, this was it. It was a resplendent swath of humanity where black, white and brown stood tall and stood beautiful. Then credit three hours of knockyour-socks-off show. Kudos to the school contest winners: high school $1,000 MLK youth art contest first prize went to Delta Performing Arts Academy; $500 second prize to Devonaire Bryant of Bidwell High; $300 third prize to Lindsey Walker, Kim Calalsi, Daryl Jackson and Spencer Dobbins of Deer Valley; middle school first prize went to Cheyenne Navarro of Antioch Middle; second prize to Rodrigo Guitterez of Antioch Middle; and third prize to Siska Blaz of Dallas Ranch Middle. Cheers to presenters Mary Rocha, Antioch City Council; and David Fraser, District 5 Board of Supervisor Federal Glover’s Chief of Staff; and to keynote speaker A.U.S.D. Superintendent Dr. Deborah Sims for reminding us that there could be no Jan. 20 without Jan. 19; to Pastor Kelly for his invocation; Pastor Smith for the benediction; and to performers Antioch Church Family for their awesome, national-award-winning Antioch Voices choral group; Grace Bible Fellowship for an outstanding dance ensemble; and for the sensational WEMIME troupe silently but exuberantly punctuating gospel songs with dance and pantomime; to Sarah Trail for a superb piano recital; and to rousing rapper Young Brett and comedienne Ms. Onion for bringing the crowd to its feet. Yes, for one enchanted afternoon in mid-January, under the roof of the gilded, frescoed ceilings of the fabled El Campanil Theatre, which has transfixed audiences with the wizardry of performing icons Clark Gable, Duke Ellington, Roy Rogers, Al Jolsen, Groucho Marx and Sally Rand, Antioch was again spellbound. This time the magic was borne not on keyboards, nor comedic lines, nor fan dances, but on the wings of a dream inspired by a giant of a man gazing from a mountaintop of hope. The dream transported the spirits of 700 citizens to the rafters and unto a world beyond where the substance of soul, not the superficialities of skin shade, counted; a world in which one race ruled, the human race; a world in which black, white, red and brown were all cherished as God’s chosen heirs. Is it not liberating to dream? After all, as is said, there is no Mahatma Gandhi, no Martin Luther King, no John or Robert Kennedy left. There is, though, you and I.
As the charge goes, if not us, then who? I hope you, too, are a dreamer. Walter Ruehlig Antioch
Bolstering the boys Editor: Boy Scout Troop 152 is pleased to share our great success with our first-ever tree lot. From families who purchased more than 600 trees to local business owners who donated goods, our community showed that a Grinchy economy has no power over East County’s holiday spirit and good will. Special thanks to the many neighbors and friends, old and new, who helped us spread the word by recommending us or posting a sign. Some of the local business and community leaders essential to our efforts included Scheer Home Systems, Dr. Michael Painter, IFCO/RPC/PALLET/SYSTEMS, City of Oakley, Enrique Cinquini, Mazzy Fire Protection, the Oakley and Antioch school districts, Print Club and our local newspapers. Again, our heartfelt gratitude. With your help, Troop 152 has funded a host of 2009 activities. Perhaps more important, our scouts learned much about community spirit and commerce. Look for our young men at next year’s community events such as the Marsh Creek Cleanup and Scouting for Food. And we hope to see you again next December at the tree lot. Sharon Karbowski Oakley

In the wake of recent budget reductions and staff cutbacks, the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff is now offering online reporting of certain crimes to residents of Discovery Bay and Oakley. Reporting some crimes online allows deputies more time for policing, but it comes at the expense of personalized service. “Our organizational culture demands timely and personal responses to calls from our citizens” said Sheriff Warren E. Rupf. “While the use of this new program reduces personal contact, we must adjust to the debilitating loss of available staff.” Online reports pertain to non-emergency crimes for which no suspect can be identified: abandoned vehicles, forgery, ha-
rassing phone calls, passing of bad checks, trespassing, counterfeiting, fraudulent access of a computer, littering, public nuisance, vandalism, defrauding of an innkeeper, fraudulent use of a credit card, lost property, theft (including identity theft) and fraud. Citizens may submit crime tips and barking-dog complaints, request vacation house checks and report illegal fireworks. To report a crime online, go to www. cocosheriff.org and click the File Online Report Here link. All reports are reviewed and the approved report will be sent back as an e-mail free of charge. The online reporting system is not intended for urgent matters. Always call 911 during an emergency.
Business poster scam The Brentwood Chamber of Commerce this week alerted its members to a possible scam involving posters that employers are required to display in their place of business. “There are two men, and a man and a women, going to local businesses saying that they are from the state, requesting to see your Business Employment Poster,” Harry York, chamber CEO wrote in an e-mail alert. “Then they try to sell you a poster for $118. These men and women are not legitimate.” Local police have been alerted to the
scam, York said, and anyone encountering the people involved should call 911. Businesspersons can find out more about California poster requirements by logging on to www.dir.ca.gov/dwc/faqs.html and searching for Posters. For federal requirements, go to www.dol.gov/osbp/sbrefa/ poster/matrix.htm. Required posters can be downloaded free via official government sites. Local Doctor Exposes Weight Loss Industry And Saves You Big Money On Your New Years Resolution… Brentwood Doctor gives you the “skinny” on the tactics used by the diet and weight loss industry to help separate you from your hard earned dollars while selling you a pipe dream and tips on how you can lose weight without wasting money on gym memberships, outrageous diets or dangerous pills. Brentwood, Ca – Dr. James Martin D.C. has had it with the diet and weight loss industry and is indeed exposing the diet and weight loss industry and helping guide you to the most direct, fastest, effective and SAFE ways to lose the extra 5, 10, 45 or even 100 lbs. you’ve put on over the last few months or years. This local doctor has had so many of his patients doing everything under the sun to try and lose weight and failing miserably or succeeding at losing the weight only to have it return and then some, that he has just tired of seeing people victimized by these money sucking vampires that prey on innocent consumers at their weakest point. Yeah, they are waiting and salivating for YOU to make your oh so predictable and SHORT LIVED…. you know….NEW YEARS RESOLUTION!! Some of you say it every year. This year I will lose the weight. Or for some of you it’s your first year to start the never-ending year after year HOPE that you will succeed at losing the unwanted and unsightly fat hanging around your belly or cottage cheese thighs. For some of you, you really want to lose the weight for the health benefit to avoid diabetes and heart disease associated with being overweight. Whatever your case may be, There is FINALLY HOPE! Dr. Martin isn’t going to be making any friends by giving you the following information, but he is sick and tired of watching people devastated or even depressed by their weight gain and helpless feelings of despair when they fail time and time again. So here goes…. IF you are reading this and you have tried it ALL already, and you really would like to lose the weight and succeed, then pay close attention. If you have tried counting points only to throw your calculator out the window, If you have embarrassed yourself enough with public and humiliating “weigh-ins”, If you are tired of mail order, microwaved and probably unhealthy food, If you are tired of
silly “Hollywood” type diets, If you are sick of taking dangerous stimulant diet pills (yes, they are dangerous), If you are tired of starving yourself, If you have succeeded at losing the weight with any of these, BUT gained it ALL back with a few extra pounds you are in for the biggest breakthrough in weight loss Dr. Martin has ever seen. Dr. Martin believes the TRUE CAUSE of “Weight Loss Resistance Syndrome” is NOT in your mouth! It IS in your head!! My name is Dr. James Martin and No I’m not trying to be funny. Let me explain. This amazing discovery hit me like a ton of bricks and I wasn’t even looking! A while back, I was invited by a world famous doctor (now a good friend) who specialized in a non surgical, non invasive brain based behavioral repatterning treatment to help patients quickly and effectively lose weight, to bring my office staff to spend three days with him at his estate and he would train me and my staff on how to do this treatment. This world famous doctor did share with me that he had operated up to 38 weight loss centers at one time and had people losing up to HALF THEIR BODYWEIGHT and kept it off for years after receiving treatment at his centers. He showed me the before and after pictures and their stories….Dozens and dozens of them!! I was astounded!! I was so impressed that I had to try this new technology and treatment on my own patients to see if it really worked. I immediately started treatment on what I call the ULTIMATE COUCH POTATO! My mother in law had been through five back surgeries, can’t walk more than 3 houses on her block, can’t stand more than 10 minutes, can’t really do much of anything! She tried EVERYTHING! Popular weight loss centers that do public weigh-ins, mail order microwave foods, starvation, all kinds of diets, dangerous pills, you name it. And NO lasting results! She could NOT lose weight! She was severely
depressed to the point of depression medication. I called her to come into my office as I had what I called a breakthrough treatment to help her actually lose weight. She got a little excited as she could see how excited I was as I explained the treatment and she agreed to be my test subject. Well, she lost 36 pounds over 6 months doing NO EXERCISE, NO REAL ACTIVITY, NOT EVEN WALKING!! She can’t due to severe debilitating back and leg pain! I was SOLD! I watched a colleague lose over 100 pounds over 12 months! It was amazing. So, great news for you. I am now releasing this new Doctor supervised weight loss program for the first time ever in Brentwood. Imagine the feeling you get when you look good again, feel attractive, feel good about yourself. Imagine melting off the pounds quickly and easily without the hype and short lived results! I am so convinced that this program will work for you that I am offering an unheard of Satisfaction Guarantee In Writing! Yes! A real old fashioned guarantee. But there are a small number of people out there this may not work for. So, I am offering for a limited time…

Year Ike Montañez in his nomination. “He’s an all-around good citizen.” Asked what he’s most proud of, Clare said it goes back to a lesson taught him by his grandfather. “He said if you want to lift yourself up, you have to lift others first,” Clare said. “I’m proud of helping to lift other people, help people have better lives, not by myself, but with others. I’m proud to be counted among the people who care.” Still on the mend from his fall (he suffered eight broken ribs, a broken collarbone and a punctured lung when he fell 20 feet while hanging Christmas lights at home), Clare said he returned to work Jan. 20 and is putting in about three to four hours a day. He added that he was pleased to hear that the nominations for Citizen of the Year were submitted before his mishap. “I’m just glad it wasn’t because they felt sorry for me for being stupid enough to fall off my roof,” he joked. A dinner in Clare’s honor will he held March 23. For more information, call 925-634-3344.

The size of some of the buildings also poses a challenge. For instance, the former Oak Street home of Not Native spans 5,000 square feet, more than most companies need. Subdividing the space or refitting portions of it for a restaurant would require a large investment, and potential tenants have balked at making such an investment without a longer-term lease than has been able to be worked out to date. Maurer said the downtown has between 70,000 and 80,000 square feet of retail space, 25 to 30 percent of which is currently vacant. Rents are typically between $1 and $1.30 per square foot after falling from the $2.50 to $3 range a couple of years ago. (The city’s biggest commercial development, The Streets of Brentwood, charges between $3.50 and $4 per square foot, including common-area maintenance.) The lower rents should help matters, she said, but the economic downturn has consumers clinging to their wallets. Potential investors whose businesses would need to woo consumers are hesitant as a result. To help property owners and potential tenants, the city is working on a new Business Incentive Program that could provide assistance with rent in the first year. The assistance would be in the form of a loan that could be forgiven if certain longevity terms are met. Based on a similar program in Livermore, that program should be coming to the City Council for approval in the coming months. Also on tap is additional work from Metrovision on how to attract restaurants and how best to utilize the area’s parking opportunities. Overall, Maurer said, “We have excellent bones; we need a few things here and there to make it stronger. (Someday) We’ll be the regional downtown district for East Contra Costa. It’s a matter of getting all the pieces together.”

Football taken to the Next Level
Check out our new Web site, www.thepress.net.
The second annual Next Level Athletes (formally Believe and Achieve) football camp will be held at Diablo Valley College, 321 Golf Club Road in Pleasant Hill, on Feb. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The camp will provide athletes with off-season training methods and the skills needed to be successful on and off the field, such as off-season study habits and the importance of a healthy diet. New additions to the camp this year will be the Drugs and HIV/AIDS Awareness Seminar, which will educate the athletes about obstacles they might face throughout life. Some former camp attendees went on to enjoy successful football campaigns this past year. Former De La Salle High School standout RB Kylan Butler (University of Arizona) rushed for nearly 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns. Ohio University’s DB Travis Carrie made 35 tackles, an interception, a pass defense and five punt returns, earning top freshman honors on the team. Carrie will be entering his sophomore season as the team’s number-one defensive back. Both athletes attribute part of their success to attending the Next Level Athletes camp last winter. “The camp helped me with my footwork and really emphasized technique
and showed me how to come out of my breaks as fast as possible,” Butler said. “It helped me prepare for other camps and the season because I knew what the coaches were looking for when they asked me to perform drills.” “The camp showed me the importance of dedication, proper techniques and how to stay motivated to strive for success at the next level,” Carrie said. “I would encourage all athletes to attend the Next Level Athletes camp and learn proper technique from the coaches. It really helped me get an edge over the competition. Camp Director Reynard Carrie will be joined by other former professional football players such as former Dallas Cowboys/(CFL)BC Lions linebacker Mawuko Tugbenyoh; former Eastern Oregon and Portland State safeties coach Nick Chenault; former Cornell University defensive lineman Jesse Rodriguez; University of Oregon defensive back Charles Favroth; and national strength and conditioning coach Jim Garcia. The Athletes will also be joined by certified nutritionists Pierre and Brenda Goudie of Max Muscle in Brentwood. For more information and registration please visit www.carriesports.net.

‘Best’ pediatrician Diabetic Drugs May Be Dangerous To Your Health goes the extra mile New guide sheds light on the dangers of diabetic drugs and why doctors prescribe them anyway. Pediatrician Dr. Richard Singer of the Sutter Delta Medical Group received the Best Pediatrician Award in the recently published “Best of Brentwood 2008.” Upon learning of his award, Singer said, “I am truly honored to receive this award,” said Singer, “and I am grateful that the families I have cared for are comfortable with the medical care they receive.” Discovery Bay’s Dathia Amis attests to the outstanding care her three children receive from Singer: “My husband and I met with Singer while I was still pregnant with our first. He was warm, friendly and everything you would want in a pediatrician, so it was an easy fit.” Five years later, the Amis family found out just how lucky they were to have Singer as their pediatrician. One of their sons, who was 3 at the time, was sick and had recently been diagnosed with asthma. On
a late Saturday evening, they took him to the hospital, where he received a breathing treatment. By Sunday morning, Singer had already called to check in on how the boy was doing. When he found that the boy wasn’t doing well, he took immediate action. “I know it’s a Sunday, but do you mind if I come to your house?” singer asked Amis. “He showed up,” she said, “checked his blood-oxygen level and said we needed to call an ambulance because our son was in respitory distress. He followed us to the hospital and stayed with us the whole time … He saved our son’s life.” Singer has been in private practice since 1997 and estimates he cares for approximately 700 families. That’s a lot of patients for a man who still makes house calls – one of the reasons he’s Brentwood’s Best.

Self-care isn’t selfish by Beth Witrogen Correspondent We are often so busy taking care of others – family, friends, co-workers, etc. – that we lose ourselves in the process. When we forget to care for ourselves, the quality of what we do in the world suffers. Especially for family caregivers, the adult child seems to be the one who becomes the most exhausted and frustrated in his or her attempts to maintain a “normal” life balance. It can be hard to accept that selfcare is not the same as being selfish. If you care for yourself to the exclusion of everyone around you, then yes, that is narcissistic. But if you include yourself in the caring equation, you not only are able to give to others from a healthy foundation, but the joy in your care will be much greater. Here are tips for self-care, no matter what your state of health is at the moment: • Believe that optimum wellness is possible, and that your body has the inner guidance system to make it so. • Listen to your body’s symptoms and pay attention to its messages about health and healing. Its inner wisdom will guide you to greater wellness.
• Work with what you have today and let tomorrow take care of itself. Say to yourself, “The energy of life is enough to dispel my fears and to give me strength to handle today.” The more you seek balance, the more balanced you will become. Remember: Energy follows thought. • Understand that if you don’t value yourself, you have little to give; then you will burn out. • Realize that you don’t have to be all things to all people. You can say no and set limits without putting others out of your heart. • If you are caring for an aging loved one, learn to accept and ask for help, especially from family, friends and community resources. For example, if siblings aren’t pitching in, facilitate a family meeting and talk about how to delegate tasks. • Remember that you have a right to your own life. Giving your all doesn’t mean giving up your own health and well-being. • If you find yourself tired, angry or resentful at the end of the day, ask yourself what thoughts, actions or interactions drained you. Develop a meditation or self-reflection practice to let them go. • Don’t worry about what society, other family members, friends and colleagues
think of you or how you are doing. Consider that your best is good enough; no one else has the right to judge you or make you feel guilty. • Keep a positive attitude and accept each day’s offerings. Then let everything go at the end of the day. • Stop trying to control people and events or expecting certain results. Life happens on its own. • Pay attention to the people and activities that nurture your life energy. Commit to more of these interactions. • Make a list of tasks and prioritize them according to what is important for you to be personally involved in and what you can delegate. • Learn to ask for help; it is actually selfish not to let others give to you. • Learn to say “no” to things you used to say “yes” to in order to protect your time and energy. Set reasonable expectations: Don’t try to be all things to all people; it is not your responsibility to make others happy or to live their lives for them. Remember that service means enhancing other people’s lives, not giving your life away or making other people happy. ©2008 Beth Witrogen is a double Pulitzer nominee for her writing on family caregiving and wellness. Healthy diet is food for the eyes by Charlyn Fargo Registered Dietitian A recent eye exam (and my first eyeglasses) prompted me to do some research on the connection between diet and eye health. Like an apple that turns brown when it’s cut open, the lens of the eye gets brown as we age, writes Allen Taylor, director of the Laboratory for Nutrition and Vision Research at Tufts’ Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition. The browning is a result of oxidation, and in terms of our diet, the oxidation of carbohydrates. Aging eyes can lead to cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), conditions Taylor expects to see as more baby-boomers age. In a Nurses Health Study of 500 women 53 to 73 years of age, Taylor and colleagues found that women who consumed diets with a high glycemic index had a greater risk of developing signs of early AMD than those with a lower glycemic index diet. The glycemic index measures how rapidly the body converts food to sugar. High glycemic index foods like white bread or potatoes are considered lower-quality carbohydrate sources than foods like lentils, yams or whole grains. The National Eye Institute’s Age-Related Eye Disease Study of 4,099 non-diabetic participants found that 20 percent of AMD cases would have been prevented by a low glycemic diet. According to Taylor, shifting your diet from the top half of the glycemic-index scale to the bottom half is as simple as switching from five slices of white bread per day to five slices of whole wheat bread per day. Such small changes can reduce the risk of AMD and delay the progress of AMD in patients who already have it.

New Spinal Stenosis Treatment So Effective Eliminating Back And Leg Pain It Offers New Hope To Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica And Back Pain Sufferers In Brentwood… Here’s how the newest breakthrough non-surgical back pain and sciatica treatment may end your pain and solve your herniated, bulging or degenerated disc pain problems… You may be thinking “What IS going to happen to me if I can’t find a solution to my back pain or leg pain?” The answer to your question starts out hopeful. I’ll just go to my doctor and he will take care of me. He will know what to do. But then something very odd happens to you. You discover your primary care physician is not really well equipped to handle that job. He or She is very busy treating infections, diabetes, heart conditions and the like, which they are very well equipped to handle. This is very apparent with your resulting drug prescription for Soma muscle relaxers and Norco, Neurontin or any other of the various prescribed pain medications. You then take the drugs soon to feel strangely like your not altogether “there” or you immediately are sick, feel nausea and vomit the drugs as fast as you swallowed them. When you get sick of that (pardon the pun! I couldn’t resist), you go back to your doctor looking for another more appealing treatment. This time it’s physical therapy. The thing you already can’t do!! You already can’t bend over, twist, lift things, and now they want you to do more of it with a bunch of other back pain sufferers! Gimme a break. Now, you’ve really had it. You try the chiropractor and either you feel better for a little while only to have the pain return, or worse, nothing happens at all. Or even worse than that, after your treatment you have MORE pain (not because chiropractic does not work, your condition is just too deteriorated or severe). Then you try acupuncture because you read in a magazine it could help pain. You then realize sticking a bunch of needles in you will not magically remove the bulging disc that is smashing your nerve and causing you pain. You try massage as you read on the internet massage may help alleviate back pain… only to be disappointed. You’re now beginning to feel desperate. Back to your primary care doctor to tell him about your adventures hoping he will have a different answer this time. He does. “We can inject pain drugs through a big needle into your spine”. You cringe in fear and reluctantly agree at this point. “NOW I will be fixed”. Or at least that’s what you’ve been led to believe. You have either no pain relief, some pain relief , a whole lot of pain relief or it makes you have more
pain. The second pain shot (oh, yes there will be a second and a third) is usually less effective or not at all and requires another one. You come to the realization that pain shots will not fix the disc bulge or herniation still smashing your delicate nerves causing you pain. Finally, your doctor recommends you see a “Specialist” (Back Surgeon) and he can do risky surgery. If you’ve read the latest article in the Journal Of American Medical Association*, you will see surgery patients and non surgery patients turned out the same! Why even do the surgery? Risk of paralysis, death, infections, more pain. No thanks. So. Back to the question. What are YOU going to do if you are stuck between serious back pain or leg pain or surgery? Great News! A new extremely effective non surgical new back pain treatment is now available in Brentwood. If you are suffering from back pain or leg pain, having pain at the belt line, fire down your legs, numb legs, feet or toes or feel like a knife is stuck in your back you owe to yourself to check out this new procedure.
exam I had was super, the best I’ve had anywhere. The doctor explained things to me that no one else ever has.” Non-Candidate Brentwood, Ca “I thought I’d write a note to you and all of those potential patients who have serious doubts (as I had) about your decompression treatments. Actually, I thought your procedure was more of a psychological placebo designed for everyone, instead of a non-surgical process that could repair injured vertebral discs. Imagine my surprise when you advised me that my condition was too severe for your procedure to correct. To me, that refusal added world’s of credibility to your program. It showed me that you are only there to help patients; not just to take their money. I assure you that I will recommend you to anyone I know or meet that suffers from spine and/or disc pain. I can do this knowing full well that they will be treated right.” Non-Candidate Antioch, Ca
And that’s why I’m offering a limited time…
Finally, Some Good News! If you’ve been suffering with back pain or arm / leg pain caused by a disc bulge, disc herniation or squashed or compressed discs. My name is Dr. James Martin D.C. and I’m so confident we can help you, I’m willing to back it up…but not with empty promises.
The FREE 19 Point “Squashed-Disc” Qualifying Assessment
I GUARANTEE you will only be accepted into our program IF YOU QUALIFY for the treatment AFTER having THE MOST THOROUGH AND COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT YOU HAVE EVER HAD or I will buy you lunch! (I haven’t bought one yet !)
That’s right, no charge and we won’t try to sell you anything. But you will find out if you are a candidate for this revolutionary new therapy. You won’t be left wondering if it’s something that could have eliminated your pain.
Yes! I am very confident, but I can’t help EVERYBODY.. You see, there’s a very small percentage of folks we can’t help. Here’s what a couple applicants said after I told them both I couldn’t help them: “I was treated very nicely. The doctors have listened to me and they didn’t rush me out of the office, despite the fact I wasn’t a candidate. The

I tried acupuncture, acupressure, chiropractic, and pain medications. Dr. Martin and spinal decompression have given me my life back. I couldn’t walk and was in excruciating pain. I now have no pain and I have my mobility back.” Bonnie Salmon – Owner Scooters Café “I had lower back pain and leg numbness so bad I could not sleep properly. It’s wonderful to be able to sleep all night without pain and to stand straight and walk without both legs going numb.” Marcia Penick – Retired “I had severe back pain and was losing ability to function. My problem started 13 years ago and it got severe in the last 2 months or so. After the first treatment, the numbness in my left leg and foot went away.” Burna McClelland- Rancher “I had unrelenting back pain, gloom and disappointment as I had several doctors who were unable to help me. Spinal Decompression is really amazing! I have gone through a transformation of pain, gloom and disappointment to a new value, new hope and a new lease on life.” Herb Olsen-Retired

FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT
Snack for the big game Calling all Wildcats Super Bowl Sunday isn’t just a big day for football; it’s a big day for snacking. According to the Snack Food Association, this Sunday will see Americans double their average daily consumption of snacks. Is it possible to enjoy great food and snacks during the game and not blow your resolution to eat healthy? Well, when you reach for a heart-healthy snack such as California pistachios, it really is. New research from Penn State shows that a daily dose of pistachios – about one to two handfuls – can help lower bad cholesterol levels while increasing good cholesterol levels, which is good news for those who want to keep their hearts pumping on all cylinders. Pistachios are a super snack because they’re a nutrient-dense nut. They offer more than 30 vitamins and are one of the lowest-calorie, lowest-fat and highest-fiber nuts. They also contain polyphenol antioxidants and lutein, an antioxidant needed to maintain eye health. One little ounce of pistachios is loaded with tasty goodness and offers: • 49 kernels – the most of any nut. Comparatively, there are 23 almonds per ounce, and 14 walnuts. • 12 percent of daily recommended fiber, which aids the digestive tract, helps
manage cholesterol and control blood sugar levels. • 20 percent of the daily recommended value of vitamin B6, essential to human growth and healthy metabolism. • More antioxidants than one cup of green tea (on an ounce-per-ounce basis). • More lutein than three medium tangerines or a glass of orange juice. For more information on pistachios, visit www.wonderfulpistachios. com or www.pistachiohealth.com.
