What a difference a week can make
My world came to an abrupt halt two weeks ago when my computer crashed.
I didn’t realize how dependent I had become on my old desktop computer until that moment. I rely
on it to write these columns, stay on top of world events but mostly shop. I also burn my own CDs, which tells you how old I am. I like to purchase songs from iTunes, create a playlist and then burn a CD, which I then play in my car. Thankfully, my car has a CD player. Newer models don’t even offer it. CD players are now obsolete like the 8-track player and the ashtray.
My kids are disgusted with my CD burning and keep telling me I should just use Spotify and stream my music. I’m wasting my money they say, but I am paying for their monthly subscription to Spotify, so I think they should just zip it.
Anyway, during the burning process my computer froze. I did what I always do when my computer freezes, which is also considered the worst way to turn off your computer: I simply held the power button in for 10 seconds and waited for it to turn off. Then I hit the power button again, assuming it would reboot. It didn’t. I tried all the tricks that YouTube offered and nothing worked. I sat there dumbfounded. I thought about all my emails, passwords, columns and pictures being held hostage by my dead computer. I began to panic.
Then, I remembered a place called The Computer Guyz. The owner is a genius and knows his way around motherboards and hard drives, but you have to be willing to put the blinders on when you enter his shop. It is a mess. I am just being honest here.
There are computer parts everywhere, and you can barely walk because of all the cords, electronics and keyboards on the floor, but I assume that must be how geniuses operate.
Wait a minute. My house is also a mess, and I am surely no genius, so there goes my theory.
Anyway, I brought my dead computer to him, hoping he could resurrect it and for a fair price. I had forgotten how the owner loves to talk. I mean he can talk! I’m not sure he even takes a breath, which means there is never a moment where you can politely interrupt him. So you just have to speak up loudly and say, “I have to go!” Which is what I did because it was time to take Scout to puppy school, and I was now running late. He promised to Hangin’ in There Vicki McKenna
call me with an estimate.
Now, before I took my ailing computer to The Computer Guyz, I noticed that my four parakeets were low on water. I quickly filled up their water dishes, grabbed my computer and headed out the door.
When I returned from The Computer Guyz, I opened the door to find both my dogs and four cats sitting in the middle of the living room staring up at the ceiling. A flash of yellow flew by my head, then a green flash. The birds were loose! I had forgotten to secure the latch on the cage, and the birds had all escaped. They were fluttering all over the house, chirping and enjoying their newfound freedom. I started screaming, “The birds are out!”
Haley appeared at the top of the stairs just as one flew by her head. It was a miracle that all four parakeets were still alive, what with all the predators about. The dogs were barking, the cats were oddly calm, probably devising a bird-murder plan. The clock was ticking. Only 20 minutes until Scout’s puppy class, and I had to rescue the birds before I left. Leaving them in the house with all the animal assassins meant certain death. One by one, using a piano stool, climbing on chairs and hopping from couch to couch, I snatched them by hand.
Did you know parakeets bite? But I kept going and finally, they were all safely back in the cage, much to the disappointment of the cats who quietly slinked away to take naps.
I grabbed Scout. Scout hates the car and also hates school. He whined the whole way. We were 15 minutes late. The puppy school door was locked, so I knocked and the instructor opened the door. The eyes of all the other puppy parents were on me.
I apologized for being late and offered up my story about having to rescue my parakeets, thinking I might get a laugh, but I didn’t. I just wanted to disappear, but all the chairs were taken, so I made a beeline for the corner and awkwardly sat down on the cold concrete floor. It was more like a collapse really, due to my arthritic knee. A nice man, who I am pretty sure felt sorry for me, offered me his chair. Getting up off the floor proved to be even more awkward, especially while still clutching my little dog, but I finally made it to the stool. Scout sat on my lap whining loudly and shaking uncontrollably. What a pair.
Well, what a difference a week makes! My computer has been restored. The parakeets haven’t tried to escape after their thrilling bird adventure, and Scout actually performed his first successful ‘sit’ the other day. Time to sit back, relax and burn a new CD.

tion map will be used, with candidates chosen by and representing the districts in which they live. Candidates in Districts 1 and 3 will be elected in 2020, with Districts 2 and 4 filled in 2022.
Current councilmembers will not have their terms extended or curtailed by the process, meaning that 2018-elected councilmembers Joel Bryant and Johnny Rodriguez will retain their at-large seats through November 2022. The terms of fellow councilmembers Claudette Staton and Karen Rarey are up in 2020.
The change follows Walnut Creek attorney Scott Rafferty’s threats to sue the city over claims that Brentwood’s voting system violates the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA) by fostering an arrangement that dilutes the Latino vote.
The CVRA — signed into law in 2002 — bans at-large election methods that impair a protected class’s ability to elect its selected candidates or influence an election outcome.
“I had studied racial vote dilution in our county for some time and initially took action based on concerns in the Latino community,” Rafferty said. “But without regard to race, a large portion of Brentwood’s neighborhoods lacked representation because the councilmembers were so concentrated geographically. Brentwood had also grown to the point where it had become very expensive to contest a council seat.”
Brentwood officials have publicly stated they felt the city’s former election method didn’t violate the CVRA but that deciding not to change would put the city at financial risk. The move cost the city about $135,000 — far less than the legal fees it could have racked up fighting, and possibly losing, a lawsuit.
Almost all the entities that have received similar demands, including the nearby cities of Antioch, Concord and Martinez, have settled out of court by agreeing to shift to district-based elections, said Brentwood City Attorney Damien Brower.
Regardless of the change, however,

Sign the Petition
Community volunteers are circulating an initiative petition which would require the City of Brentwood to spend money on the safety of residents. These funds would come from The City’s growth in property and sales tax revenues.
Tell your family, friends and neighbors, face-to-face, that if this Initiative doesn’t pass Brentwood’s emergency medical response will continue to degrade, from inadequate to nearly non-existent. Fire services, too.

Brentwood’s councilmembers are all committed to representing residents equally, according to the recently approved resolution.
“While a councilmember will be elected by district, they will serve the entire community and should continue to ensure that resources be used to benefit the city as a whole,” wrote City Clerk Margaret Wimberly in a city staff report explaining the resolution.
Among other things, the document’s declarations include that the council will continue governing on an at-large basis, considering the needs and interests of the entire community; remain united in its customer service to the community; provide excellent quality of life for all; help all members of the community,

over the weekend. Grief counselors were at the school Monday to help students and staff, and there was a conspicuous police presence consisting of several police cruisers patrolling the school grounds.
As the APD investigation into the shooting progresses, police have not named a suspect or suspects in the case.
“I’ve got detectives working hard on this case,” Antioch Chief of Police Tammany Brooks said. “I feel fairly confident that, hopefully within the next few days, we should have an update for the media regarding where we stand on the case ... I will say that we actually collected quite a bit of video. Our guys are working to analyze all of that. We’ll utilize that to try to identify the persons responsible and hopefully follow up and try to get the people in custody is the ultimate goal. We will continue working in that direction.”
Jonathan was at Deer Valley to attend a boys’ varsity basketball game against the crosstown rival Antioch Panthers. The APD said that immediately after the game, a large group of individuals began fighting in the school’s parking lot. One of those involved produced a firearm and fired, striking Jonathan three times. The APD has not stated how many shots were fired nor the type of weapon they believe was used in the killing. No other injuries were reported.
Anello told The Press in an email that, in anticipation of an intense rivalry between an undefeated Deer Valley team and a struggling Antioch team, extra security was present at the game.
“We continue to be focused on the wellbeing of students following the tragic, senseless and heinous shooting of a Deer Valley student by what appears to be a non-DVHS student this past Friday night,” Anello said. “That being said, many are asking if security was present at the game. The simple answer is yes. In fact, the game was staffed with twice as many security personnel than other games due to the fact that we anticipated a larger regardless of which district residents reside in and from which districts the city councilmembers are elected; and allocate resources based on long-term strategic planning efforts, with citywide considerations of service levels and financial capacity.
Each of the city’s councilmembers will sign the declaration, and it will be brought before each new council following an election. “It’s not this section of Brentwood or that section — it’s the whole,” Mayor Bob Taylor said of councilmember representation. crowd as the DVHS boys’ basketball team is undefeated and Antioch High is a sister school. These staff members were escorting the majority of the crowd out of the game as it was ending. The shooting appears to have occurred ahead of the crowd prior to security reaching that area.”
It is unclear at this time if any security personnel were posted in the parking lot.
Brooks confirmed that the APD does not provide security for AUSD events, and no officers were present at the school prior to the shooting. Additionally, the department does not have school resource officers (SRO) assigned to the district.
“We haven’t been in any formal discussions with the school district regarding any sort of security from police officers at any events,” Brooks said. “We don’t have school resource officers currently. The Antioch Police Department does not have any school resource officers at any of the schools in the City of Antioch. It’s a program that was cut probably 10 years ago. It was a result of budget cuts from the recession that just completely decimated the number of sworn police officers that we had.”
As of press time, information regarding funeral services for Jonathan was not available.
“(Jonathan) was an extraordinary young man full of life,” wrote Aurora Solorio on a GoFundMe page established to help Parker’s family. “He was truly an old soul. He didn’t ask for much or need much. He was always thankful and so happy with life. He didn’t understand why people were so cruel, but he truly tried to make up for it.”
