Brentwood Council approves Shepherd’s Gate expansion Women and children’s shelter will be able to house more people

Shepherd’s Gate, a women’s shelter on Sycamore Avenue in Brentwood, will soon be able to help more women in need following the 4-0 approval Tuesday night of an expansion to their existing facility. Councilmember Pa’tanisha Pierson recused herself from the discussion to “avoid the appearance of impropriety” due to interacting with Shepherd’s Gate sometimes in her role as an attorney. This expansion was previously approved 4-0 by the Planning Commission in November. The addition to the Shepherd’s Gate property would be another building that

Oakley will have the Automated License Plate Reader services for another five years to aid the police with crime such as locating stolen or wanted vehicles throughout the city. At its meeting on Tuesday night, Jan 9, the Oakley City Council unanimously approved a five-year contract extension with Flock Group, which provides the license plate reader services to the police. The contract extension will cost the city about $62,500, or $12,500 yearly, with funding covered in the Police Department’s annual budget. Police Chief Paul Beard said the department has been using plate-reading cameras for many years but brought in Flock as a provider in April 2021. Oakley first entered into a two-year agreement with Flock for five stationary cameras., which went live in November of that year. The implementation of stationary license plate cameras serves as a cost-effective force multiplier for the police department as it aids in directing officers to areas where crimes are taking place and offers crucial investigative leads after incidents, police said. “The usage of ALPR cam-

Supervisors install new chairperson and vice-chairperson

Supervisors Federal D. Glover and Candace Andersen are taking on new leadership roles for the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors in 2024. Honorable Edward G. Weil administered the Oath of Office to Glover as chairperson and Andersen as vicechairperson of the Board of Supervisors. District 5 Supervisor Federal D. Glover, who represents Hercules, Rodeo, Crockett, Martinez, Bay Point, Pacheco, Clyde, Pittsburg, and parts of Antioch and Marsh Creek, is the Board’s first and only AfricanAmerican Supervisor. He was elected to the Board in 2000, served four previous terms as chairperson, and is the fourth longest-serving Supervisor in California. Glover announced that he would retire at the end of his current term in December 2024, thus ending six consecutive terms as the District 5 supervisor. “As we head into 2024, we will focus on improving the quality of life for all County residents with the Board’s theme of “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access” guiding our efforts,” Glover said. District 2 Supervisor Candace Andersen represents Alamo, Blackhawk, Canyon, Danville, Diablo, Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda, Rossmoor, San Ramon, Tassajara Valley, and parts of unincorporated Walnut Creek. She was first

elected to the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors in June 2012.

State accepting grant applications for beach restoration programs

California State Parks’ Division of Boating and Waterways is now accepting grant applications from government agencies to help slow, stop, or reverse the impact of erosion on California’s shoreline. The deadline to submit applications for the Shoreline Erosion Control and Public Beach Restoration programs is Thursday, Feb. 1, by noon. Federal, state, regional and local government agencies use Shoreline Erosion Control grants to build structures that protect public infrastructure in developed shoreline areas against wave erosion, and Public Beach Restoration grants to strategically place sand on eroded beaches. In fiscal year 2022/23, the following three projects were approved under the Public Beach Restoration Program: • $11,500,000 for a project in Encinitas and Solana Beach. • $2,900,000 for a project in Orange County, including Seal Beach, Huntington Beach and Newport Beach. • $1,085,000 for a project in San Clemente. year 2025/26 grant, an agency must submit a formal application to the boating division requesting funding for a specific phase of a project (feasibility study, design, or construction) along with a resolution from its governing body authorizing the application for grant funding. Projects are authorized for funding through the state’s budget process. Individual projects, if approved, would be notified of available funding in June 2025. Applications for both grant programs must be submitted to the boating division through its Online Grant Application System. American Red Cross to hold partner recognition event

The American Red Cross will be recognizing partner agencies in the county – among them Ron Nunn Elementary School and two mobile home parks in Brentwood – at the seventh annual Partner Recognition event is from 9-11 a.m. on Jan. 25 at the Contra Costa Community College District Office at 500 North Court St. in Martinez. The Brentwood school, plus the Woodgate and Walnut Acres mobile home parks are being honored because they participated in the Sound the Alarm smoke detector event, and the Red Cross installed dozens of smoke detectors in homes. The school worked with the Red Cross and taught the Prepare with Pedro (1st and 2nd grade) and Pillowcase Project curriculum (4th and 5th grade) last year and schedule to teach again next month. People can request free smoke detectors, get preparedness training, volunteer and donate blood, according to Brian Oftedal, Fire Commissioner of Contra Costa County Fire and one of the honorees.

The East Bay Regional Park District is celebrating its 90th anniversary year with a series of events. After 90 years, the Park District has grown to be the largest regional park district of its kind in the nation, with 73 regional parks available for hiking, biking, swimming, horseback riding, boating, fishing, picnicking, camping, and nature discovery. The Park District manages over 125,000 acres of parklands, 55 miles of shoreline, and more than 1,300 miles of trails in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Bethel Island’s Scout Hall, a cornerstone of the local community, turns 70 this year. Volunteers help keep it running. mation, call 925-684-3220. Built in 1954 through the efforts of local residents and the Bethel Island Women’s Club, the hall’s driving force was a need for a meeting place for local groups, like the Boy Scouts. Hence the name. The plot was donated by Leroy Thomas, an attorney from Berkeley. Most of the building supplies were also donated, including free labor from the Antioch Carpenter Union, lumber, steel foundation forms, electrical work, light fixtures, shingles, nails and trucks to haul supplies. As a community-supported building, with only

rental fees as income, Castillo said residents have been key to keeping the hall up and running. When repairs or cleaning need to be done, locals step up to keep their hall open. “It’s amazing to me how many community members step up and volunteer to help keep it running,” Castillo said. “That’s the spirit it was built with, and that spirit still exists today. Bethel Island’s Scout Hall turns 70 this year, and the community is ready to celebrate. As the only event space on the small island, it hosts weddings, celebrations of life, quinceaneras, local government meetings and bingo nights, to name a few. The community building runs on a shoestring budget under the joint management of the Bethel Island Women’s Club, the Bethel Island Chamber of Commerce and the Bethel Island Lions Club. Brentwood police arrest home burglary suspects Two people were arrested on various charges after a home burglary in Brentwood on Jan. 6 The two were arrested on suspicion of burglary, conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia and other related charges, plus cutting the power lines to the home as well, according to the Brentwood police Facebook page. At about 8 a.m., Brentwood police dispatch received a call from the 2900 block of Spanish Bay for a residential burglary that had just occurred. The homeowner said that he caught two people burglarizing the home and he was chasing after the female and male suspects. While walking back to his residence, the

homeowner saw a parked car unknown to the area. When Brentwood officers arrived, they located the female suspect, identified as Jasmine Miller, 27, of Vacaville, sitting in the car. She was subsequently taken into custody. Officers continued to search the area with a drone and assistance from a Pittsburg police K-9 Unit. However, the second suspect was not found. A few hours later, the victim called dispatch again to report that he saw the male suspect in the immediate area. Officers circulated the area and located him,, identified as Wesley Bush, 36, of Suisun City and he was taken into custody. The stolen property belonging to the homeowner was found inside the car Miller was sitting in, and returned.

Details scarce in Antioch shooting Antioch police are investigating an attempted homicide at Sycamore Square on Jan. 3. Officers were dispatched to the scene at about 8:30 p.m. after reports of a shooting, according to a Jan. 9 police press release. “While officers were on scene, a 32-year-old male victim suffering from at least one

Brentwood Rotary hosts its second annual Sweetheart 5K run Correspondent

The Brentwood Rotary will host its second annual Sweetheart 5K run at Veterans Park, 3841 Balfour Road on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 9 a.m. Brentwood Rotary Club Director Olga Vidriales said the goal of the event is to raise money for scholarships to give to students at Liberty, Heritage, La Paloma high schools and Liberty Adult education. $20,000 after it raised $15,000 last year, she said. Between 300 and 350 runners are expected for this year’s Sweetheart run. Vidriales describes the 5K (3.1 miles) run as a “true family event for all ages,” and said she believes the Sweetheart run appeals to a different demographic than for some of the other events the Brentwood Rotary hosts. The Sweetheart run is the first of many events the Brentwood Rotary has planned for this year, each with the same goal of raising money to give back to the community. “It’s what rotary is all about,” Vidriales said.

July 28, 1945-Dec. 28, 2023 Teresa Granado, 78, of Brentwood passed away on Dec. 28 in Oakley. She was born July 28, 1945 in Uvalde, Texas. She moved to California with her parents, Marcelino and Juanita Maldonado, (they both passed away) at the age of 6. She married Dennis Granado on March 17, 1963. Teresa was an Instructional Aide at Brentwood Elementary for 28 years, and was in charge of the Senior luncheon at St. Anthony’s Church. She taught Catechism at the church, and her hobbies included crocheting, sewing and playing Bunco. She is survived by daughter Letty (Perry); son Dennis (Maritza); granddaughters Charity (Joe) and Audrey (Jesse). grandson Tony; and great granddaughters Alyssa and Samantha. How Heritage girls got their groove back Patriots riding five game win streak after big victory vs. Antioch

If there is going to be any turning point of the Heritage girls basketball team’s season this year, it was a holiday trip to San Diego for a few games against three teams from Southern California and much-needed team bonding. For the Patriots, what happened in San Diego didn’t stay in San Diego, but ended up on the court as the team now rides a five-game win streak following their 59-21 win over Antioch in Tuesday night’s Bay Valley Athletic League opener in Brentwood. “(San Diego) was awesome,” head coach Mark Hurtado said. “All the dinners and gatherings and all the time together outside of the court was amazing, and that’s what I was hoping to get out of it.” Heritage won three of their four games in the SoCal Holiday Prep Basketball Classic, falling 67-60 to Irvine’s Woodbridge High School in overtime before starting their streak with wins against

Mater Dei Catholic 60-40, Carlsbad 5124, and Newport-Bellevue 83-47. They returned home just after the New Year’s holiday and defeated Del Oro 56-36 to keep the win streak alive entering league play. One of the biggest takeaways from the road trip that Hurtado and players like freshman Ze’Ni Patterson and senior Kendall McClure said was the sense of camaraderie and chemistry that’s been on display on the court as of late. “I feel like in San Diego, we played more as a team and that’s showing back at home,” Patterson said. “Our chemistry

off the court translates right back on the court, and we’re just getting to know each other and just blend well together.” Off the court, the girls spent a lot of time together hanging out and doing what most teen athletes today do – record a few TikToks and, occasionally, stay up a little later than usual. But the time together was something that, whether purposely or coincidentally, sparked Heritage’s current run. “It was just a time where we spent so much time together and really got to know each other more as people, establishing a greater friendship with one another,” Mc-

Clure said. “Just the laughs and having fun with my team and really just getting to know some amazing people. “So now we have that open communication where we want to share the ball with each other. We know each other so well that that connection on and off the court is just so easy.” That chemistry was on full display in the Patriots’ win over Antioch (7-10, 0-1 BVAL) Tuesday night. Patterson finished with a game-high 14 points, all in the first half. She didn’t play much in the second half because of Heritage’s big lead, and McClure finished with 11 points. The bigger takeaway was Heritage playing on the fast break early and often as Antioch committed numerous turnovers, resulting in Heritage points. “We hope to do everything as precisely as we can on offense and defense,” Hurtado said. “We need to tighten stuff up, be in the right spot, and be aggressive. Doesn’t matter who we’re playing.” Heritage (7-4, 1-0 BVAL) takes on Deer Valley at home Friday at 7 p.m. before playing Oakland Tech at Bishop O’Dowd in Oakland (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.) and Lincoln High School of Stockton at St. Mary’s in Stockton (Monday, 7 p.m.) in a pair of separate Martin Luther King Jr. showcase games. Lions open BVAL play with blow-out over Freedom By Juan Cebreiros Correspondent

The Liberty Lions boys basketball team started league play Tuesday night with a 76-36 victory over visiting Freedom High. The Falcons (4-11) and Lions traded leads during the opening quarter, but a 27-4 run by the Lions in the second quarter put the game out of reach. “Our goal tonight was they were not allowed to score over 40,” Lions head coach Jon Heinz said. “I didn’t care about offense; my goal was to not allow over 10 points in any quarter.” Liberty junior Andrew Vixon led the team in scoring with 20 points, including an alley-oop dunk midway through the second quarter that electrified the crowd and the Lions’ bench. Gavin Cook Whisenton added 15 points, Dante Vigil was not far behind with 13 and Mekhi Reed had 10. Heinz said he felt his team started the game “timid and soft and on our heels.” However, a defensive change midway through the first quarter that included senior Josh Heinz and sophomore Dante Vigil being subbed in to help defensively allowed for them to shake off the slow start. “I thought Josh and Dante came in and really changed the complexion of the

game,” Heinz said. “I thought they brought a lot of energy off the bench tonight and it kind of got the whole team going. That, along with changes within the Lions’ defense helped them hold the Falcons to just 4 points in two of the four quarters. A majority of the Lions’ offense was generated from steals by their defense. In the half-court setting, their attack wasn’t as potent, in large part from Freedom’s defensive scheme.

“We’ve been working on some new offensive sets, all against man,” Heinz said. “We don’t see a lot of zone and they played zone most of the game.” While the Liberty defense held Freedom to 4 points in a quarter twice, they also surrendered more than 10 points in a quarter twice and Heinz said that stems from the team still struggling with consistency. “Outside of Gavin, these guys haven’t done it before,” Heinz said. “As well as we played, there were mistakes made.”

Heinz added that despite the slow start, he was proud of the team’s game and overall effort. Slow starts have plagued the Lions all season long, and Heinz said he’s continuing to search for new ways to try and get his team out of the gate with energy. Against Freedom, he called for an alley-oop dunk on the first play of the game to try and get the crowd’s energy behind his team. “I’m trying to get the crowd going,” Heinz said. “Sometimes if you get the crowd going, the kids will feed off that. I just wanted to try to intimidate and set that tone early. I’m really hoping this game is gonna help them kind of figure that out.” Despite seeing areas the team needs to improve upon, Heinz said “I’m happy with this” as the team starts league play with a 1-0 record. He added that he hopes this win will create momentum for the team because he said “Last week we took two steps back.” Heinz said he anticipates senior point guard Quinton Bundage to make his season debut next week after being sidelined for over half the season now. Heritage’s Cody Wong wins National Football Foundation scholarship Heritage senior offensive and defensive lineman Cody Wong received a special award on Tuesday, winning the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame scholarship for Contra Costa County. Wong will receive $1,000 toward his college tuition next fall as part of the scholarship. He was a three-year varsity starter through his Heritage career, a unanimous team captain and is the fourth straight Heritage Patriot to win the scholarship dating to the spring 2021 COVID-19 season. “Cody represents the very best that Heritage has to offer in terms of a true student-athlete,” head coach Dave Fogelstrom said in an email. “His work ethic in the weight room, his leadership and service on and off the field, and his effort on the field and in the classroom all combine to make him a great candidate for this award. It was an honor to be able to nominate him, and I am proud he was recognized by such a prestigious organization.” Wong was nominated by Fogelstrom and selected by a County Selection Committee consisting of coaches, administrators, league commissioners, media, and former NFL players for the award. His selection was based not just off of his ability on the field, but also his academic achievement, leadership qualities, and for his citizenship in school and community. According to a press release, all nominees will be evaluated by the County Selection Committee using the criteria listed below: • 40% - Academic Achievement (3.00 GPA or better) - Transcript • 40% - Football Ability, Performance and Attitude

Supervisors slammed for county appointment

Editor: Once more, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors has made fools of themselves and embarrassed the rest of the citizens of our county by its recent appointment to fill the vacancy of the County Treasurer-Tax Collector. The Supervisors, after months of pontificating, chest-beating, and congratulating each other for creating a new department with two department heads called the Department of Racial Equity and Social Justice, proved how hypocritical they truly are. During the same board meeting, the board held public interviews for the County Treasurer-Tax Collector position even though two of the candidates were current, high-level managers with many years in the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office and both women of color, who were eminently qualified and credentialed. Predictably, the board instead picked a white man from Yuba County. Why should any of us ever believe anything these board members say or do about racial or social justice? Gus S. Kramer Assessor

Holiday Pack for the Troops a success

Editor: It’s amazing what can happen when a

community comes together and supports an event. Sorry if you missed it because it was something to see. On Dec. 12, the 11th annual Holiday Pack for the Troops was held. This year was different than in prior years. We had an amazing group of people that stepped up, gave their time and helped put the event together. Without this group of people, it would not have been the success that it was. As a community, we were able to ship out six pallets of holiday packs to veterans and troops serving overseas and stateside. Echoing the discussion from November, it was determined that the organization’s conditional use permit, which specifies women and children, supersedes the text of the zoning ordinance. There has not been a single mayor who has stood here, not a single city manager who has stood here, to say that we’re going to try to clean these blighted communities up. “The city’s approach has been conservative with absent corporate landlords, which is to do the bare minimum.” The mayor adds that the shopping center and the other abandoned properties like it have become magnets for homeless encampments and illegal activities. According to a 2023 survey by Contra Costa Health Services, Antioch had the biggest increase in homelessness from 2020 through last year with nearly 100 more unsheltered observations. Almost every other city in East County saw a decline while Bay Point and Bethel Island saw minuscule increases. The Delta Fair Shopping Center was just one of nine commercial properties that Thorpe wants the city to go after. During Tuesday evening’s City Council meeting in Antioch, Thorpe and the other members of Antioch’s council considered potential actions against the corporate landlords that he wants the city to consider as presented by Charisse Smith, the director of civil code enforcement at Best Best & Krieger Attorneys at Law. The first course of action that Smith suggested was city abatement, which she says can be faster compared to the litigation process.

But you can only get the consumers to show up if they want to show up. There’s the pitfall – how does a consumer feel welcomed to a property if they feel it’s blighted? BURKHART no information about CD and GS. This has to change. Because there is little training on celiac disease and gluten sensitivity in medical schools, little information is relayed to patients. Providers and patients must self-educate on the topics. I hope this article helps in that process. Celiac disease is common. ♦ A groundbreaking study found the incidence of CD in people donating blood to be 1/133. More recent information shows the number is now closer to 1/100. ♦ If someone is symptomatic or has a celiacrelated disorder such as anemia, diabetes, osteoporosis, short stature, infertility, or Down’s syndrome, the incidence of CD increases to 1/25. ♦ If there is a first-degree relative with CD, the incidence increases further to 1/22, irrespective of whether or not the relative showed any symptoms. CD is an autoimmune, genetic, lifelong condition that can present at any age. It causes damage to the villi of the intestinal mucosa because of an abnormal immune reaction to gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. With continued ingestion of gluten, a person with CD develops malabsorption and subsequent complications. Long-term complications of celiac disease include (but are not exclusive to): anemia, vitamin deficiencies, heart disease, osteoporosis, infertility, and neurologic symptoms. Celiac disease is a multi-organ system disorder that can affect the thyroid, liver, heart, and reproductive organs and the musculoskeletal system and brain. The risk of long-term complications

decreases with adherence to a gluten-free diet. Only 30%-40% of celiac patients actually have GI symptoms at diagnosis Celiac disease symptoms are not what you may think. The presenting symptoms ( primary symptoms at diagnosis) of celiac disease have changed dramatically over the last decade. This disease is a chameleon and celiac disease symptoms vary from person to person. Once thought to be a “wasting” disease, we now know that 40% of CD patients are overweight or obese at diagnosis. Another common misconception is that gastrointestinal symptoms are required to initiate a diagnostic evaluation. However, gastrointestinal symptoms only occur in 30–40% of celiac patients at diagnosis. Their absence should not preclude an assessment. “Atypical” celiac disease symptoms are now common, including factors such as anxiety, depression, anemia, fatigue, osteopenia, rashes, dental enamel defects, and aphthous ulcers. One or more of these may qualify as the presenting symptom. I want to reemphasize that only 30-40% of patients actually have GI symptoms at diagnosis. For example, I have frequently seen newly diagnosed celiac patients with only anxiety or only joint pain. They have no other symptoms – emphasis on no other symptoms. These were their “glutenreaction” symptoms. Also changed is the belief that CD is found primarily in Northern European Caucasians. The ethnic boundaries of CD are now blurred, as the disease appears to be equally common in other ethnic groups. Someone must be eating gluten for tests to be accurate. Basic screening for celiac disease includes a serum TTG IgA and total serum IgA. Total serum IgA needs to be done to rule out IgA deficiency which occurs in about 10% of celiac patients. If IgA deficiency is present, the TTG IgG must be used but is less accurate. Further testing may be needed in those situations. Some labs include a DGP-IGA and EMA in their celiac screen/panel or do these tests as a reflex. The confirmatory test is an endoscopic biopsy. Confusion and misinformation about celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity are still widespread. Healthcare providers have the opportunity to correct misperceptions and identify patients with these common and underdiagnosed conditions. Providers must respond to patient questions with accurate information and a well-informed diagnostic plan. I have many patients in my practice with celiac disease (CD) or non-celiac gluten sensitivity (GS). The disparity in diagnosis and treatment from other providers is astounding. There is confusion on countless fronts. Celiac symptoms are often missed. Misinformation stems, in part, from internet lore and wellmeaning friends. These are variables that are difficult to control. However, I also see many people whose providers have given them misinformation or

or more than a decade, Jennifer Ogden of Brentwood suffered from severe chronic

pain and tried various ways to find relief. But nothing helped until she stumbled upon a book about red -light therapy a few years ago. She tried it, and she said is now free of pain. Ogden, 61, explored red-light therapy and said she experienced immediate relief during three treatments. Motivated by her personal experience, she transitioned from being a nanny to launching her own business and extending her newfound knowledge of red-light therapy at Sawa Spa. Ogden said she was impressed by the results of the treatments she went for and mentioned it to the pain management consultant who had treated her. The consultant offered to train Ogden. After her training, Ogden reached out to the Sawa Spa director, who was happy to offer red-light therapy as part of their services. “That is how I started my own busi-

ness and now I am treating clients at Sawa Spa,” she said. “I live pain-free now and I’m helping others live pain-free without prescription or over-the-counter medications,” said Ogden, who is now a pain management consultant. According to health.com, red-light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation or low-level light therapy, may help improve several skin and health conditions such as acne, fine lines, wrinkles, and alopecia, among others. It uses low-level light to penetrate the skin and strengthen the mitochondria. Ogden said she uses red-light therapy for pain management, such as inflammation, joint pain, stiffness, and arthritis, among others. She recommends those suffering from pain come for at least three sessions. The results, however, will vary depending on several factors such as the kind of pain, its

duration, diet, and medication taken. “For these reasons, I offer a 30-minute consultation before I treat so we can look at all the factors to determine the optimal care plan,” she said. “Oftentimes, when a client has dealt with chronic pain for years, they may want to purchase a (Food and Drug Administration-approved) pad and use them at home for continued relief,” Ogden said. Of note, many celiac centers and practitioners follow a more extensive evaluation process involving screening antibodies, genetic testing, clinical response to a gluten-free diet, and endoscopy. The only treatment for CD is a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet—100% of the time Pharmaceutical treatments currently in clinical trials may aid in the digestion of gluten or in decreasing intestinal permeability seen with celiac disease. None are currently on the market but Larazotide is in Phase 3 clinical trials (i.e. getting close). Larazotide is aimed at decreasing celiac disease symptoms that

occur when someone is accidentally exposed to gluten. It will not cure celiac disease or allow someone to eat a regular diet. Current over-the-counter digestive enzymes marketed for digesting gluten are not appropriate for people with CD. Some of the most promising pharmaceuticals under investigation are aimed at decreasing the symptoms that occur from cross-contamination, such as when dining out. They will not be a cure, but their development will be helpful in addressing the social and psychological issues surrounding CD. The social aspect of celiac disease is not commonly discussed in the medical community. The use of nanoparticle technology is currently being evaluated as a treatment for

celiac disease. Early results are promising. Diagnosis of gluten sensitivity There is no validated test to diagnose GS. Some online labs offer blood, saliva, or stool tests for gluten sensitivity, but they are invalidated and not recommended. It is impossible to develop a test when the mechanism of gluten sensitivity has not been determined. Diagnosis is made by ruling out CD and wheat allergy while the patient is on a gluten-containing diet. Once both are ruled out, a gluten elimination diet is prescribed. If symptoms improve, the patient is deemed to have gluten sensitivity. Using a response to initiation of a gluten-free diet as a prognostic indicator will give inaccurate results, as both celiac and GS can have similar responses to a gluten-free diet. Treatment of gluten sensitivity At this point, a gluten-free diet may not be the starting point for gluten sensitivity patients. Many cases of GS are due to FODMAP intolerance. Once an evaluation is done to assure no other conditions are responsible for symptoms, a low FODMAP (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols) diet may be indicated. Referral to a dietitian familiar with the Low FODMAP diet is recommended. Once studies clarify what gluten sensitivity truly is, more targeted and individualized therapies will be developed. It is not clear how strict the gluten-free diet needs to be or what the long-term complications are. These are both areas currently under investigation. Why you must test and not just start a gluten-free diet? The blood tests and biopsy used to test for CD require a patient to be eating gluten to obtain accurate results. If a patient is started on a gluten-free diet without evaluating celiac disease, it becomes challenging to appropriately diagnose celiac disease. Patients who experience clinical improvement on a gluten-free diet will rarely restart a gluten-containing diet to get an appropriate diagnosis. They finally feel well, and returning to being sick is just not an option. The importance of testing cannot be overemphasized. Consider these factors: ♦ CD is lifelong. We don’t know about GS. It is wrong to subject someone to a lifelong, strict gluten-free diet if they don’t need it. The social and psychological implications can be vast.

CD requires a strict gluten-free diet. A gluten-free diet may not treat those with GS. They may require a low FODMAP diet. This difference in utilizing the proper diet can be life-changing to some patients. ♦ CD is genetic. If you miss a CD diagnosis, you may also miss or delay diagnosis in their child, sibling, or parent. ♦ CD has long-term risks and complications. These parameters may be different for GS. We simply don’t know yet. Appropriate diagnosis is necessary for proper follow-up care of celiac patients and those with gluten sensitivity. Insurance reimbursement can be more challenging without a diagnosis. You and your patients are more likely to get insurance reimbursement for a diagnosis of CD that would otherwise be missed if never tested for. Summary of the difference between celiac disease and gluten sensitivity 1. Celiac is a genetic autoimmune condition. Gluten sensitivity does not appear to be genetic or autoimmune. 2. Testing for celiac disease must be done when someone is eating gluten to have valid test results. There is currently no valid test for gluten sensitivity. 3. We know many other conditions are associated with celiac disease, we are not sure of all conditions associated with gluten sensitivity. 4. Gluten sensitivity may be several different disorders, including FODMAP intolerance, ATI intolerance, and intolerances to other components of wheat besides gluten. 5. Celiac Disease is lifelong. The tolerance to gluten in someone with celiac disease does not ever improve or go away. Gluten sensitivity may be lifelong or temporary and can become less severe over time. 6. The diet for celiac disease is a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet. The diet for gluten sensitivity is typically a Low FODMAP diet or a less strict version of the glutenfree diet. 7. For people with celiac disease, the glutenfree diet is their treatment, i.e., “medication .” There is not a time when they should or can eat gluten. According to the UK Tea & Infusions Association, tea can be traced all the way back to 2737 B.C. in China. The emperor tried the concoction and the rest is history. Since tea was first (accidentally) consumed, it has become an integral part of many people’s daily lives. That’s even more so when people feel a little under the weather, which might prompt some to wonder if tea actually boasts any medicinal properties or if it’s all just legend. According to Penn Medicine, various types of tea do, in fact, provide some notable health benefits.

Harvard Medical School notes the curious distinction that herbal teas are not technically tea, as they typically lack the leaves or leaf buds of tea plants. Herbal teas are in fact made from tisanes, which are blends or infusions of dried fruits, flowers, spices, or herbs. Harvard Medical School advises speaking with a physician prior to drinking herbal teas, as they can cause problems among individuals with certain medical conditions. If a doctor gives the green light for herbal teas, people may be happy to learn that they’ve been linked to a host of health benefits, including improved sleep, reduced stress and lower blood pressure, among others.

Penn Medicine notes that green tea is high in flavonoids, which are a type of metabolite found in plants. Flavonoids have been linked to improved heart health because they can help to lower levels of bad cholesterol and reduce blood clotting. In addition, a 2014 study published in the European Journal of Nutrition concluded that green tea and its catechins can help to improve blood pressure.

Should certain teas be avoided?

Though white tea, herbal tea, green tea, and other forms of the popular beverage have been linked to various health benefits, Penn Medicine notes other types of tea are best avoided. For example, detox teas, which Penn Medicine notes are often laced with laxatives, can be harmful to overall health. Bubble teas also tend to be high in sugar and calories. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that moving more and sitting less benefits people regardless of their age, sex, race, ethnicity, or even current fitness levels. Whether they’re adapting to a more physically active lifestyle, already physically active or somewhere in between, individuals can benefit from recognizing the latest physical activity federal guidelines.

Adults

Substantial health benefits can be gained when adults do between 150 and 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week or 75-150 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity each week. HHS notes that aerobic activity, which can

include walking, running, cycling, and hiking, among other activities, should be spread out over the course of the week. In addition to aerobic activity, HHS urges adults to do muscle-strengthening activities of moderate or greater intensity on two or more days per week.

Older adults

HHS recommends that older adults adhere to the same guidelines as younger adults but take additional steps as well. Older adults are urged to incorporate multicomponent physical activity that includes balance training into their fitness regimens. HHS also advises older adults to determine their level of effort for physical activity relative to their fitness level. It’s also recommended that older adults with chronic conditions discuss their ability to engage safely in regular physical activity with their physicians. Vigorous- and even moderateintensity exercise may not be possible for some older adults with existing conditions. Routine physical activity can help adults and older adults live longer, healthier lives. Adults of all ages are urged to speak with their physicians about safe ways to become more physically active.
