Police standoff in Brentwood ends in murder-suicide as gunman shoots himself By Jeff Weisinger Staff Writer

A standoff between a gunman and the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff ended in a murder-suicide early Tuesday morning as the gunman turned the gun on himself and died later at a nearby hospital, according to the Sheriff’s office. The original medical call came in shortly before 4 p.m. Monday after a woman was shot following an altercation with the unnamed suspect on the 200 block of East Sims Road. Sheriff’s deputies, and later a SWAT team, were dispatched to the home, and after making contact with the suspect, the suspect refused to leave the bedroom of the house and had several

firearms. The suspect told negotiators that he shot the woman and that she was dead in the bedroom. The initial reports said that the suspect claimed that the woman was “cold to the touch” after he shot her, and that it was believed that he had an AK-47 and several other firearms locked in with him. Police blocked off more than half of Sims Road as the standoff went on through the night. The Sheriff’s office said in an update that later in the night that a gunshot was heard from the bedroom, and when the SWAT team entered, they found the unidentified dead woman and the suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Future Oakley City Councilmembers will see a pay hike from the current $456.75 a month to $800 for their services after taking into consideration the cost of inflation and as a measure to encourage more people to run for council in the future. The Oakley City Council passed a motion 4-1 in their meeting on Tuesday night, Jan. 23, for council members for the salary increase. Councilmember Dr. George Fuller voted against the motion. The current salary amount was set by the City Council in 2014. The new salary will take effect in 2025 after members of

Heritage High Robotics club prepares for league championships on Feb. 3 By Juan Cebreiros Correspondent

Heritage High School Robotics Club leader Robert Pardi has high hopes for his students’ robot as the competitive robotics season ramps up, leading up to the league championship on Feb. 3. “I’m absolutely amazed,” Pardi said of the Heritage Robotics Club robot. “It’s incredibly thought out and well designed under the space circumstances as they are limited to an 18-inch cube when designing. They’ve done an amazing job. Our robot can do everything it’s tasked to do and it puts us near the top in our league.” Pardi was initially part of the Robotics club at Northgate High School until 2009 when he came to Heritage and wanted to bring robotics to the school with him. During his time at Northgate, his robotics club won in Northern California his first season. With him on staff, Northgate also progressed to the world championships. While he gave up coaching athletics to teach the robotics club full time, he enjoys the special competition between the students. “The students are competing in-

He looks to that when speaking on the success of the club in competitions. “It takes a tremendous dedication, lots of planning, teamwork and camaraderie,” Pardi said. “They all get along and have a great time. Right now, we have a good mix of kids and people willing to perform different duties.” Pardi said in previous years, he’s had students who have excelled in specific areas such as programming and engineering, but this year he said “It seems that everything is coming together this year with engineering and programming.” Saturday, Feb. 3, the Heritage Robotics Club will compete in their league championships. Pardi said the club will compete in five to six matches, with opponents and teammates being selected at random with a 2-versus-2 match format. He adds that he has high hopes for the students in league championships, with just a few minor tweaks he anticipates the students to make. “If they increase the programming capabilities I think they can do well in league matches,” Pardi said. “They have a robot that can perform the tasks. Our robot is just as good with our league opponents’ robots.”

Lions Clubs from Brentwood, Byron and Discovery Bay make donation to Hijas del Campo

Lions Clubs from Brentwood, Byron and Discovery Bay donated a “much-needed” commercial refrigerator and freezer to Hijas del Campo on Tuesday, Jan. 16. California Lions Foundations helped the effort with a matching grant, according to a Lions Club press release. “We, the Brentwood Lions Club, feel incredibly fortunate to be associated with Hijas del Campo,” said Laura Avila, treasurer of the Brentwood Lions Club. “Their dedication to those whose hard work sustains us is truly inspiring. This collaborative effort with the Lions Clubs and the California Lions Foundation reflects our commitment to supporting and uplifting our community.” Marivel Mendoza, co-founder and executive director of Hijas del Campo, said she and her organization “have been incredibly grateful and honored to have first partnered with the Brentwood Lions back in December of 2021. Since that time our partnership has grown week over week, and year over year. They have supported the evolution of our Despensa program not just by monetary donations, but by

their volunteer efforts and hours. Now, the Brentwood Lions have supported and spearheaded the donation of our much-needed new refrigeration system. ‘Thank you’ to the Brentwood Lions, Laura and Phil Avila, John Meyer, Byron Delta Lions, Discovery Bay Lions and the California Lions Foundation.” Hijas del Campo’s despensa program provides food for 468 Campes in families with an estimated 1,684 people. All food and home essential bags are packed, and prepared weekly at Hijas del Campo’s headquarters in Brentwood. Due to limitations of not having refrigeration, donations at the despensa were limited to essential non-perishable items. Now they will be able to provide perishable items such as milk, cheese, and eggs, among other things, from their despensa pantry, officials said.

County does its annual count of homeless people

Contra Costa Health was scheduled to conduct its annual ‘point-intime’ count of county homeless residents this week. The count occurs as the county works to expand services for homeless residents, including on location, at a county shelter and at an overnight warming center in Concord. Data collected during the count helps government, service providers and community advocates to develop responses to the problems facing local homeless people, according to a news release. Results of the count will not be available for several weeks. During the

Newsom announces fewer freeway shootings across state

Gov. Gavin Newsom said there are fewer freeway shootings across California. New data by the California Highway Patrol shows the number of confirmed freeway shootings in California dropped from 349 in 2022 to 274 last year — a reduction of more than 21% from the previous year and a reduction of 38% from highs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Newsom established CHP’s Highway Violence Task Force to address the rise of violent crimes on state highways, which surged nationally during the pandemic. At their peak in California in 2021, a reported 447 shootings resulted in 16 deaths and 88 injuries. New data shows in addition to the drop in the number of shootings, a 75% reduction in deaths compared to those highs during COVID. In addition to the reduction in the number of freeway shootings statewide, the new data indicates the number of victims killed and injured in highway violence incidents also decreased. In 2023, four persons were killed in freeway shootings — a 60% reduction from the prior year. Additionally, 8% fewer people were injured – from 74 to 68 last year. Reflecting CHP’s increased efforts to investigate and address freeway violence, the number of arrests by the

CHP in freeway shootings increased nearly 9% from 2022.

State water agency reaches milestone in groundwater sustainability efforts

The Department of Water Resources marked a major milestone in long-term water supply management efforts with the completion of the review process of groundwater sustainability plans for high- and medium-priority groundwater basins. The plans were submitted at the local level for the first time, ensuring that towns near these resources have a significant role in ensuring their sustainability. California’s groundwater basins, which collectively make up a massive underground reservoir, provide a critical water supply for 15.4 million people, especially during dry years when surface water supplies are lacking. As California adapts to a hotter, drier future, these groundwater supplies will become a more vital resource for local water agencies and agriculture. In 2014, the state legislature passed the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, establishing a statewide framework to help protect groundwater resources over time. For each high- and medium- priority basin, local groundwater sustainability agencies are tasked with preparing and implementing groundwater sustainability plans to help ensure current and long-term water supply resiliency for the communities, households, industries, and environmental habitats that are dependent upon them.

Two temporary signs at Diamond Hill Sports Club and Spa in Oakley will be installed to improve the club’s visibility to passersby. The signs, called ‘monument signs’ because they are larger than normalsize signs and are at ground level so drivers or passersby can easily see the business information, are to tell people about the existence of the club because many didn’t know it was there. The applicant for the signs, who did not identify herself to councilmembers, said people mistook it as a church or school. In a meeting on Tuesday night, Jan. 23, the Oakley City Council unanimously approved the request for a Sign Exception Permit to allow the installation of two offsite, temporary, freestanding monument signs within the same commercial center as the club. The club, located at the commercial center at 1510 Neroly Road, opened in 2008. The commercial center was originally designed with the vision

According to the staff report, the request stemmed from challenges posed by ongoing development delays and obstructed views of existing signs. Oakley’s associate planner, Evan Gorman, said if the commercial center were to be fully developed, then the club would have its permanent freestanding sign. “But because it does not, (the club) does not have (the free-standing sign),” he said. Additionally, the applicant also cited that the large mature trees have (inhibited direct view of the building’s) existing signage,” Gorman said. The new signs are proposed to be 8 feet by 5 feet wide, mounted on 4 feet by 4 feet posts and located at the southeast corner of Neroly Road and Empire Avenue and on the west side of the entry driveway for the center of Neroly Road. The proposed locations for both the signs are on City-owned parcels within the commercial center. The applicants said the new signs will drive more business and provide better visibility of the club. Vice Mayor Shannon Shaw said the Council is also looking to help businesses and the city to improve. “I think this is a great opportunity... County might receive grant for EV chargers $15 million for stations at county libraries

Contra Costa County may receive $15 million to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 15 county library locations, among them the Brentwood Library. But officials warned the list is subject to change. The funds come from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Community Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Program and are meant to deploy publicly accessible EV charging and alternative fueling infrastructure in places where people live and work, according to a press release. It added that the county’s grant award is one of 47 in 22 states totaling

The county’s press release stated the libraries were chosen for this grant because they are active centers of their communities, and often are near many services including retail, recreation, and city and county government offices. The library locations will provide convenient access to EV charging for residents across the county, including in several low-income areas, officials said.

New bill aims to streamline community college transfer process to UC campuses A succession of bills was signed into law last year and went into effect starting the first of January. Among the nearly 1,000 bills Gov. Newsom signed was Assembly Bill 1291, which aims to streamline the college transfer process to a University of California campus for community college students in the state. Written by Assemblyman Kevin McCarty, the bill requires the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to create a pilot program by the 2026-27 school year. In addition, UCLA is required to declare outh at least 12 transferable majors to be riter part of their pilot program and select five additional UC campuses to participate in the program by the 2028-29 school year. A student who attains an Associate Degree for Transfer in one of the selected majors, and meets transfer requirements, receives priority admission. However, if a student receives an Associate Degree for Transfer and meets transfer requirements, but is not granted admission to their university of choice, they will be offered admission to at

least one other campus in the UC system. As a Los Medanos community college student and member of the Transfer Academy program offered to students on campus, Yajaira Gonzalez appreciates the state’s efforts to increase access to higher education through a UC campus for California community college students. “I think a lot of people who can’t afford going straight to a 4-year often get discouraged and don’t even want to try community college because they hear about how the

transfer process is complicated… and opt to go straight to work,” Gonzalez said. Negin Khalafi, a Transfer Academy student, also shared her perspective as a California community college student and student ambassador working in the Transfer and Career Services at Los Medanos College. “I think it’ll be really helpful in the sense that it will bring students hope because this year the University of California had to extend their deadlines because not a lot of people were signing up for UCs,” Khalafi

said. “I think a lot of it is just tuition in general, but also the intimidation of a UC since they’re talked up a lot. I think the bill will be able to help students feel more confident in UCs, and feel like they’ll have a chance to get in, and they’ll want to do the application,” Khalafi said. Newsom signed the bill into law despite opposition from the government relations director of the UC student association, David Ramirez, and Chanelle Win, who leads legislative efforts for the Student Senate for California Community Colleges. They oppose the bill due to McCarty not involving them in the writing process. Therefore, the bill does not accomplish the goal of creating one guaranteed admissions pathway for UC and CSU systems and giving students a guaranteed spot at a campus of their choice. Though the bill received opposition, the University of California acknowledged Newsom’s decision to proceed with the signing of the bill on Oct. 10, 2023, setting into motion the bill’s benchmarks and goals to have all nine undergraduate UCs take part in the program by 2031-32. Linguicide’s impending effects on society Immigration is a process most United States citizens have become accustomed to. It is a global movement in which individuals migrate to foreign countries normally seeking betterment and an abundance of opportunities, normally tailed by an onslaught of cultural practices, traditions, and expressions. Language is an aspect of culture that traverses thousands of miles with its patron immigrant. It is a concept that values heredity and longevity as languages are passed down from generation to generation. Under unfortunate circumstances, language can be severed from its primary vessel: the human being leading to its extinction. This phenomenon, as described by Angela Farrer from outh Language Humanities, is called Language Death or Linguicide, riter and “it occurs when a language loses its native speakers, fading into silence.” Language death is a concept that has only been perpetuated over the years. Time has sharpened its edge with social strife and issues guaranteeing that its blade will never dull. It is ever present in current society as seen by the graveyard of phonemes, but it isn’t a new notion. According to the Center for Applied Linguistics, language death can be dated to 19th century America, which worsened “the experiences of Spanish-speaking immigrants in schools, where some teachers would punish them for speaking even a word of their home language.” The erasure of culture and tradition is deeply rooted in our society, first stemming from social concepts like racism and nativism. Here, we can see the suppression of a minority group’s culture to coerce them into adopting the dominant culture – the English-speaking culture.

The children of immigrant parents are usually the first to face the harrowing effects of linguicide. With the influx of immigrant families, it is easy to observe just how little effort is being put into preserving their mother tongue. From the Calgary Journal, Katarina Daignult claims that she’s finally come to understand the significance of the pieces she’s lost alongside her mother tongue: “a connection to her culture, a sense of belonging and even the confidence to identify as an ethnic woman.” Language death starts early on. Immigrant parents begin meticulously cutting off the cultured roots of their children at a young age to cultivate the “perfect” environment for learning English. By milking out the tradition and banning the mother tongue, parents effectively foster a child who speaks sharp, crystal-clear English. But in the long run, these drastic measures done for “the better good” only isolate kids as they prevent them from fertilizing a connection with their heritage. Their selfidentity is left blank as they grow up absorbing the culture of strangers. Richard Armstrong from the University of Houston reiterates that linguists have discovered nearly 31,000 languages that have existed in human history, but currently only 6,000 are active. Some 80% of human languages have died. And these numbers are only increasing as ghosts of people are left in their wake. But now we can see a new era of linguistic revitalization taking over social media. The digital age and the platforms associated with it are becoming a new tool when reinvigorating and renewing nearly extinct languages. On Facebook, X and TikTok, it is apparent that current generations are attempting to revitalize indigenous languages through the development of diverse online communities

and open talks about feeling alienated behind your skin. Individuals are finding their cultural communities on social media and reconnecting with their past. Although people are combatting linguicide on the internet, it is possible to combat it in the classroom as well. Rachel Cortese, a speech-language therapist at the Child Mind Institute claims that “Research overwhelmingly supports teaching second languages early because as we know it’s harder to learn a second language as we get older. But when kids are very young—from birth to about 3 years old—they are very ripe for receiving new information.” Now is not the time to end the discussion, to discontinue languages like they are not the human way of communication. Keeping the world’s languages afloat not only preserves the rich century-long traditions of cultural groups but also allows people to maintain their unique form of selfidentity and continue to learn more about what makes them connected. This connection is the basis of what makes a human “human.” As creatures who are meant to network and bond, without communication and a full understanding of our past, we are only ghosts. It is important to gradually implement foreign languages into the education system earlier on, and it is equally important to encourage parents to withhold from letting their next generation be inept unable to pass down wisdom in their mother tongue. Linguicide is a nightmare that is constantly overlooked. Shedding light on this large-scale phenomenon is only the beginning. The time and effort put towards excavating and revitalizing languages can only come from the public. Language death cannot persist if the human race is meant to persist. Liberty hands Heritage first league loss since 2022 By Jeff Weisinger Staff Writer

The Liberty High girls basketball team beat the league-leading Heritage Patriots in overtime, 66-59, on Tuesday night, snapping Heritage’s 19-game winning streak in league play. Heritage’s last loss in league play came against Freedom, 45-41 on Jan. 28, 2022 “The girls did a great job of stepping up to the challenge,” Lions head coach Matt Malzahn said. “Heritage is a really tough team. They challenged us, and I think we just stuck to our game plan and wanted to win tonight.” The Lady Lions have been on a tear since getting upset by Antioch earlier this month, winning four in a row with back-to-back wins against two top teams in the North Coast Section in Heritage, and Caruthers last Saturday. Liberty has also won six of their last seven games with five games left in the season, all rematches of their league games, including next Tuesday’s rematch against Antioch and the season-finale at Heritage on Feb. 9. “They know (the loss) was a mistake that shouldn’t have happened,” Malzahn said. “But, you know, Antioch beat us and I’ll give it to them.” Liberty used their size to control the paint with seniors Madison Perea and Lea

Salinas Beamen leading the way. Salinas Beamen led the team with 23 points, including a key layup in overtime. Perea scored 17, getting tough buckets in the paint as well. “We’ve been preparing for this game the whole season,” Perea said. “Our coach gave us a very hard schedule to prepare us for this one game. All our hard work paid off. We need to take league seriously.” Both teams started slowly before Perea and Salinas Beamen sparked the Lions’ offense, opening the game on a 5-0 run with a pair of layups and a free throw. Shyanne Smith extended that to an 8-0 run with a threepointer off of an early Heritage timeout. “That’s definitely Liberty’s game,” Sali-

nas Beamen said. “We have great, outstanding post players, and that’s how we attack every team. We attack them in the paint, once they stop us in the paint we kick it out to our shooters and we have great shooters to back us if we get stuck.” The Patriots rallied back in that first quarter, going on an 11-2 run to take an 11-10 lead highlighted by a three-pointer by Riley Bayot. The Patriots took the lead on a threepointer by Gelenna Smithers off of a turnover by Smith. “We know we had to attack them on offense and be sound on defense,” Heritage head coach Mark Hurtado said. “Their bigs got us inside a lot.”

Heritage would claw back from a 32-26 halftime hole in the second half led by 18 of Ze’Ni Patterson’s game-high 26 points on the night. With the game tied at 59 at the end of regulation, Patterson just missed on what would’ve been the game-winner at the buzzer, but the shot hit the front of the rim. Liberty shut out Heritage 7-0 in overtime as Heritage’s shooting went cold. Tuesday night’s win puts Liberty just behind the Patriots for the top spot in the Bay Valley Athletic League as Heritage barely hangs on to the lead in the league with a better overall record (12-7) over the Lions (12-9) despite playing two fewer games. Antioch is a game behind the Lions and Patriots in third in the BVAL after they took down Pittsburg 62-58 Tuesday night. A loss in the final five games could just about end Liberty’s hopes not just for a shot at the league title, but could keep them out of the playoffs, according to Malzahn. While the Lions had a tough non-conference schedule, their 8-8 record in non-league play could hold them out come playoff time if Liberty doesn’t win the BVAL title. “We gotta stay up from here,” Perea said. “We can’t lose to Antioch again. Heritage girls soccer’s success: all chemistry, no drama By Jeff Weisinger

When the season started for Heritage’s girls soccer team in December, the Patriots struggled to find the back of the net, let alone find their chemistry on the field. Heritage ended non-conference play with a 2-0 win over Livermore in the final match of the 2023 calendar year. While Heritage notched their first win of the season against Livermore to enter the holiday break, what they didn’t know was that the win, plus the training time during the break, would open the floodgates for their attacking play. That has been on display through league play so far, most recently in Tuesday night’s 1-0 win at Liberty and last week’s 3-1 win against a Freedom Falcons team that has the best defense in the BVAL. Heritage’s Brynn Faulkner scored the lone goal in the 26th minute Tuesday night, tapping in a low-cross from teammate Jasmine Staples. “We have confidence in our attack,” head coach Sienna Zabroski said after the win at Freedom. The Patriots were the only team this season so far to score multiple goals against the Falcons. “It’s special to see everybody work together and come together as a team,” Heri-

tage’s Baylee Gregerson said after Friday night’s win at Freedom. Gregerson was one of Heritage’s three goal scorers on the night. “This team is special. We work together, we play together, and the chemistry is there.” Gregerson explained that all of the training during the holiday break helped the team get their chemistry on the field. “We did a lot of training,” she said. “But we made it fun. We made it in a way that we would work together and build that chemistry. I feel like once we figured out how we play together as a team, we really understood how each other plays and what’s going to work for us. We just started building from there and I think that’s what led us into our successes.” Zabroski sees the confidence and positive attitude with the girls on the pitch both in matches and in training.

“The biggest change is these kids want (to win) just as badly,” Zabroski added. “When we go to practice, they want it, and we have come together as a team to know that this is how Heritage plays. There’s no other way.” “Other teams in our league play a lot of ‘kickball.’ I don’t want our team playing that and the girls don’t want to play that either. We have very skilled girls on this team who know how to possess and move the ball. It’s coming together and I’m proud of them.” The 1-0 win keeps Heritage undefeated in the BVAL, however the lone goal scored is the first time they’ve been held under multiple goals scored since their 1-1 draw at Berkeley back on Dec. 16, 2023. Including Tuesday night’s win against the Lions, Heritage (6-3-2, 5-0-0 BVAL) has scored 29 goals in league play alone, 36

overall, while conceding just one goal in five matches in the BVAL – Freedom’s Kelsey Kawalkowski is the lone BVAL player to score against Heritage. Heritage’s 29 goals scored in league is 12 more than both Freedom and Liberty each, and is more than double Antioch’s (6), Pittsburg’s (6), and Deer Valley’s (0) total goals scored combined at the midway point of league play. Zabroski says that there have been two keys to Heritage’s prolific scoring. The first is the team’s focus on recovery, especially postmatch recovery. “Keeping the girls healthy,” Zabroski explained. “They know I have a big mentality about recovery. I want to tell them to do it on their own, but just in case they’re not, we do it and we incorporate it in our practices.” The second key to the Patriots’ current success may be the most simple: the lack of team drama. “We don’t have much drama,” Zabroski said. “I know other teams and our prior team as well, there has been drama before and I think this group of kids, they’re good kids, they’re good players. They want to be out here and there’s no one that’s negative. The Liberty boys basketball team extended their Bay Valley Athletic League win streak to 22 wins, thanks largely to their press defense, with a 69-47 road victory against Heritage High School. The two teams traded baskets early in the first quarter. However, when Liberty began to settle into their press defense, Heritage’s offense stalled. The Patriots turned the ball over 18 times and committed three 10-second violations on the night. Liberty head coach Jon Heinz said he believed his team got the Patriots “rattled with the pressure” which resulted in numerous fast-break opportunities for the Lions. “The minute they started really putting that pressure on we turned it over,” Patriots head coach Jeff Carter said. “That’s a struggle in any game because we’re not going to get 18 steals to get that back.” Carter said he used several of his timeouts to try to give his team a better understanding of how to beat Liberty’s high pressure defense. He added that he believes their inexperience showed when they weren’t able to execute their plays after timeouts to figure out how to beat the Lions’ press defense. However, he’s not letting the team’s inexperience or youth be an excuse anymore. “We’ve been doing this since November, that excuse is kind of over right now,” Carter said. “Can’t keep going back to ‘I’m gonna cut you some slack because it’s new.’ It’s not new anymore.” Entering Tuesday night’s contest, Carter said he was looking for his team to compete for the entire 32 minutes. He was critical of his team’s effort from not just Tuesday, but from a majority of the Patriots’ games this season.

“We have not had a game yet that we’ve played from the minute the ball was thrown up to the last buzzer,” Carter said. “If we lose playing hard, I can live with that. I can’t live with this kind of stuff.” Heinz was also disappointed in his team’s inconsistent energy levels throughout the night despite the Lions leading for a majority of the game. “I thought we kind of got a good lead and started playing down a little bit,” Heinz said. “We just want to

have that killer mentality for 32 minutes and I thought we were kind of up and down a little bit.” Cameron Johnson led the Lions in scoring with 21 points. Gavin Cook Whisenton followed with 18. Nate Grube was the leading scorer for the Patriots with 12. The Lions improve to 18-3 on the season and remain atop the BVAL standings with a 5-0 record. Heritage drops to 6-15 on the season and are tied for Freedom in BVAL standings at 1-4.

One dead, one critically injured in Antioch shooting Two Antioch residents were hospitalized on Tuesday night with several gunshot wounds, with one dying later in the evening. Antioch Police dispatch began receiving multiple calls at 10:53 of shots fired and one victim in the unit block of Bryan Avenue, police said in a press release. Officers found two victims, a 41-year-old

across a familiar pile of documents that they might hesitate to discard. Conventional wisdom has suggested taxpayers hold on to their tax returns for at least seven years. However, the Internal Revenue Service indicates that the seven-year timeline is not necessarily applicable to everyone. The IRS recommends taxpayers speak with their insurance company or creditors to see if they require account holders to hold on their tax records longer than the IRS. If they don’t, individuals can follow these guidelines, courtesy of the IRS. 1. Keep records for 3 years if situations (4), (5), and (6) below do not apply to you. 2. Keep records for 3 years from the date you filed your original return or 2 years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later, if you file a claim for credit or refund after you file your return. 3. reedom High School Principal Steve Amaro remembers back to the days a few decades ago

when he was in high school. There were math classes, advanced math classes, and some business classes. But there weren’t any financial literacy classes. Fast-forward to the 2023-24 academic year, and the local schools like Freedom, along with Heritage, Liberty, and Antioch all have their own financial literacy courses, something to help guide students and soonto-be grads to financial success. “Students get the opportunity to have practical knowledge and be able to place their learning where they can visualize how they’re going to use it in their life,” Amaro said. Freedom’s financial Algebra is a class in which students can learn what their future finances would look like and how they would apply to real-world applications. Amaro says that Freedom started offering the class “at least five years” ago in its math curriculum. The course isn’t required to graduate. However, it is qualified for college applications.

The class stays practical, according to Amaro. It goes over how students can prepare their finances accordingly, learning financial terms, interest rates, home buying, and how down payments work, just to name a few. The class can be amended as needed as time goes on and the economy changes. “It’s a matter of making it practical,” Amaro said. “As leaders, we always have to keep a temperature and an understanding of what the students most need when they graduate, because it’s really an educated guess. We want to try to set our students up for success in whatever they do to maximize their potential.” More states are requiring their high school students to take financial literacy courses, a stark difference to past generations

when the classes never existed, statistics show. In 2023, California Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento) introduced the bill (AB 984) that required public high schools and charter schools to offer personal finance classes required for graduation. The bill went to the ‘inactive’ file because of dwindling support, according to trackbill.com. While Freedom and the other Liberty Union High School District schools have their classes set up, Antioch head football coach Brett Dudley took the initiative to teach his players financial literacy, especially in a day when high school athletes have to possibly manage NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) deals if they go on to play college sports. “This is an area where kids just don’t learn about it in school,” he said to The Press

last summer. “Many of them don’t learn about it from their parents or anybody else, so somebody’s got to teach it to them.” Antioch offers a financial class on campus geared more towards running a business compared to Dudley’s class, which is more practical. Similar to Freedom’s and LUHSD’s financial syllabus, Dudley holds “Money Mondays” during his team’s summer camp – a roughly half-hour class before the team starts their practice day. Going into its fourth year, Dudley’s “Money Mondays” goes over similar financial topics like investing, compound interest, retirement accounts, credit cards and score, and home buying. “It’s about ways that, even before they turn 18, they can start improving their credit score,” Dudley said. “To a lot of people, credit cards are taboo subjects because you can get yourself in a lot of trouble. I explained to the kids that it’s no different than a weapon or anything else that could be dangerous if you use it wrong. If you use it correctly, there are a lot of benefits to it.” “If I had known as a student what I know now and truly subscribed to maximize my potential, why not,” Amaro said when asked if he wishes he had the financial classes back in his high school days. “If I can go ahead and take one thing at the end of the day and say ‘I learned something,’ that’s what I’d want.”

Before you use or invest in cryptocurrency, here is a primer from the Federal Trade Commission about what makes it different from cash and other payment methods, and how to spot cryptocurrency scams. What is cryptocurrency? Cryptocurrency is a type of digital currency that generally exists only electronically. You usually use your phone, computer, or a cryptocurrency ATM to buy cryptocurrency. Bitcoin and Ether are well-known cryptocurrencies, but there are many different cryptocurrencies, and new ones keep being created. How do people use cryptocurrency? People use cryptocurrency for many reasons: quick payments, to avoid transaction fees that traditional banks charge, or because it offers anonymity. Others hold cryptocurrency as an investment, hoping the value goes up. How do you get cryptocurrency? Cryptocurrency is bought through an exchange, an app, a website, or a cryptocurrency ATM. Some people earn cryptocurrency through a complex process called “mining,” which requires advanced computer equipment to solve complex math puzzles. Where and how do you store cryptocurrency? Cryptocurrency is stored in a digital

wallet, which can be online, on your computer, or on an external hard drive. A digital wallet has a wallet address, which is usually a long string of numbers and letters. If something happens to your wallet or your cryptocurrency funds — your online exchange platform goes out of business, you send cryptocurrency to the wrong person, you lose your digital wallet password, or your digital wallet is stolen or compromised — you’re likely to find that no one can help you recover your funds. How is cryptocurrency different from U.S. dollars? Cryptocurrency exists only online, so there are important differences between cryptocurrency and traditional currency, like U.S. dollars. Cryptocurrency held in accounts is not insured by the U.S. government like U.S. dollars deposited into an FDIC insured bank account are. If something happens to your account or cryptocurrency funds, the government has no obligation to get your money back. Cryptocurrency values change rapidly, even by the hour, and it can change by big amounts. It depends on many factors, including supply and demand. Cryptocurrencies tend to be more volatile than more traditional investments, such as stocks and bonds. An investment that’s worth thousands of dollars today might be worth only hundreds tomorrow. Saving for retirement is an investment in your future self. Look at how you’re planning for retirement to see if you’re maximizing your contributions or if you can contribute a little more to your 401(k) or IRA. IS THERE A TAX FOR GIFTING MONEY OR PROPERTY?

Can you give away money or property without paying a gift tax? The answer is (wait for it). . . maybe. I have many clients who ask about gifting a home or cash to their child now rather than on death. They want to help that child now, especially given the high price of real estate in California. The concepts of gift tax and estate tax come into play here. California does not have a gift tax. The feds do. The tax is levied on the giver and not the recipient. Unless the gift amount (or value of property) is more than $12.92 million for an individual, no taxes will be due. This amount can change and has been increasing for many years. This amount is determined by adding up all gifts during your lifetime and the value of your estate at death. There is also the annual gift tax exemption that allows a married couple to give up to $34,000 ($17,000 each) per year. The exclusion is per recipient. Thus, if you give to a married couple, you can give $68,000 tax free and the amount does not count towards

the lifetime exclusion. Who keeps track of gifts that count against the lifetime exclusion amount? You do. You are required to submit a gift tax return for all gifts that exceed the annual exclusion. This return allows the IRS to keep track. If an individual gives away $10 million during their lifetime, and when that person dies also has an estate worth $5 million, (for a total of $15 million), estate taxes will be due on the amount that exceeds $12.92 million. As you can see, even though you may not owe a gift tax at the time you gift your home, a tax may still be payable depending on the amount given during your lifetime. This stuff can be confusing. Best advice is to speak with an estate plan attorney like me and a tax expert prior to gifting to avoid unwanted surprises for yourself and those you leave behind when you pass away.
