The Last Summer in Gaza Images by Shaul Schwarz/Getty Images More than 25 years have passed since Israel uprooted settlements built beyond its 1967 border. off on his approach. The settlements in Gaza and their people are not deeply popular with the common Israeli, and are seen as a military liability. Can Israel really sink into a civil war from within by evacuating this place, like some of

Parents pay $15 a month to have their daughters attend classes. In a country where the average annual salary is about $1,000, $15 is a considerable amount. But parents consider the expense worth it. Professional contortionists can make an average of $700 a month if hired by an overseas circus.
After two months, Bolor had to leave the contortionist school because her family ran out of funds. Relatives living in the city took her to a bus station, where she continued the rest of the 1,400-kilometer journey alone. Now back on the farm, Bolor is able to spend time with her twin sisters, who missed her terribly.

Twelve-year-old Bolor Batjargal has wanted to join the circus since she was three. She watched contortionists on TV and was amazed by how the girls could manipulate their bodies. With her grandmother’s encouragement, she started practicing. At age 12, her parents, who run a small farm in western Mongolia, were finally able to scrape together enough funds to send her to a contortionist school.
