Editor’s Notes Celebrating Over 30 Years Volume 36, Number 4 May 2010
Greetings from Farmers Hotline I was five when my father died; my sister was nine, and my brother was eleven. It happened in an instant. My father and my uncle were unloading bags of seed corn one April morning when my father suffered a massive heart attack and died. That is pretty much the day my memory started in earnest. The first memory being a brand spanking new, 4-wheel drive tractor, which had been delivered less than 24 hours before, sitting in the yard like a red beacon, reminding everyone of how unexpected the death of a forty-three year old successful farmer and family man really is. Life on the farm changed dramatically after that. My mother made due that year, and my uncle and a family friend got the crop in and out, but it was only a temporary solution. With the next spring, came the farm sale. It was so bizarre seeing the equipment, in its red glory, gleaming in the yard all at once. Then people came and kept coming; there had never been so many people, before or since, on the place. It was surreal to watch strangers driving off with the equipment that I had spent so many hours of my young life playing on. I remember the first time that green machinery showed up on the farm. I was in kindergarten that year and only went half days to school, so I came home on the bus without my siblings. I walked up the lane looking at that tractor sitting in the yard like a giant green monster. This one shone like a green beacon, formally announcing life would never be the same. This was also the first memory I have of Kenny, the owner of that green tractor, who would be the man that would farm for my mother for the rest of my childhood. Kenny and Doris Presler lived on the other side of the small town we lived near and had three children, with the youngest being the same age as my brother. After that day, it was quite often Kenny who would be the first person to greet me when I got off the bus, even if it was only a wave from the field; and every once in awhile I would ride with Kenny a round or two. Kenny was my first employer; at a very young age I started walking beans for him.The first year or two I didn’t put in quite the same amount of hours as the other five kids, but that first paycheck of something like $14.00 seemed like a fortune to me.The following years from elementary school through high school, I spent a lot of hours in a bean field; and with those paychecks, I bought two stereos and grew my savings account. Sometimes, after a day of bean walking, we would load up and go to the lake.To this day I associate water skiing with walking beans. Kenny was so much more than a renter. He moved the snow in the winter, helped to plant trees in the spring, and there were always Christmas presents under the tree from Doris and Kenny. I must admit my mother could not have chosen a finer man or family to have aligned us with. Not that when you read this months story, Cash Rent on page 14, should you consider any of the above as requirements for your renter because I’m afraid you will be sorely disappointed. But, if you are on the other end of that agreement, I would encourage you to remember that going the extra mile and being a good friend sometimes means as much or more than the almighty dollar. It might even gain you a six-year old’s forgiveness for

Ag Shield gets your hay done right Building Innovative Equipment
ReCon 300 cuts drying time in half
for
27 Years!
MultiTrailer hauls all your loads
Ag Shield gets your hay done right! ReCon 300 cuts drying time in half! Want to reduce drying time and improve hay qualilty? The ReCon 300 reconditions your hay and leaves a fluffy swath that dries in about half the time. You beat the weather and get a top quality product. If you sell hay to dairies or the horse market, customers will pay you for the higher quality hay you make with a ReCon. Hay buyers and their animals love the softer hay so there's less waste. Use behind a swather and don't buy that mower-conditioner. If there's a shower, ReCon can fluff the hay and get the baler back in the field fast. Combine 2 swaths (up to 13ft.) and eliminate a rake pass. ReCons have worked well in 29 different forage crops from coast to coast, as well as in Australia, New Zealand and Europe. One of the available options is the hydraulic drive spreader. Now you can recondition and ted in one pass. Simply adjust the hydraulic flow to vary the spread from 8 to 20 feet. Spring assist lets you pop it up out of the way if you don't need it. Put a ReCon to work for you - then make top quality hay and improve your bottom line this year. This machine can pay for itself on as little as 450 tons of hay.
Trying to keep too many trailers running? The MultiTrailer is Ag Sheild's way to keep your investment down and still be able to do ALL of the hauling at your place. Change the flat deck into a round bale hauler in less than 1 minute Load you tractor and loader using the built in ramps and head to the field - only 1 driver needed. Unload the tractor, raise the decks, and start loading bales. When you get to the yard, you can unload each side individually - no more restacking in the feed yard - one less tractor needed! With the side decks dropped, you are legal width.
This rig runs on 7000 lb. Torflex rubber supensions with brakes on all wheels - no more rattling springs. Save money - pickups run down the road for less than 1/2 the cost of a tractor. Save time - some owners have doubled the number of bales to the yard in a day. MultiTrailer is available in 26 or 31 foot lengths with 2 or 3 axles. Costs less than single purpose or tractor pull unit. Get one working for you today.

New product signals more efficiency in agriculture Last year, Lundell Plastics introduced their FreeFlo Telescoping Tubes: flexible seed distribution tools which have helped farmers shave hours off of the planting season. Now Lundell is increasing productivity again with the FreeFlo Wireless Remote. The product is a breakthrough in planting efficiency because it makes the distribution of seed between equipment almost seamless. In combination with Lundell’s complete line of planting products, crop producers are able to load planter boxes in a fraction of time it previously required to complete the same job, while spilling lesser amounts of valuable seed. The remote snaps into place in the new FreeFlo Telescoping Tubes’ ergonomic handle, giving crop producers a comfortable way to control the flow of seed at their fingertips. This allows movement from container to container without interruptions and without the hassle of snagging electrical wires. The FreeFlo Wireless Remote is waterproof and wheatherproof to withstand the elements.Another helpful feature of the remote is that it can be detached from the handle so the auger or conveyor can be controlled remotely during maintenance such as greasing, or in bulk filling applications which may take a while to complete. The FreeFlo remote is versatile, designed to work with various 12v applications (up to 5 amps) such as actuators, solenoid valves, and throttle control motors. The FreeFlo remote is available direct from Lundell Plastics at a price of $199 US.This is just one of a few new products Lundell has introduced for 2010.The company is perhaps best known for pioneering plastic in the auger market, replacing traditional steel flighting with hi-tech poly flighting which is very durable and handles seed more gently. From their headquarters in Odebolt, Iowa they manufacture and ship products internationally.
