Cupid’s Bench September 2013-June 2014 Cupid’s Bench, comprises a frame connected by bridal joints, supported by through-wedge tenoned legs, and a handwoven cane seat. Inspired by the form of a bow, it seats two. Hard Maple | Cane | Soap

Counterclockwise from left: Developing the design through a series of sketches. The glue up for the frame consists of gluing and setting the double tapered laminations one on top of the other on the form-work; a stack of thin cauls distributes the pressure from the clamps. The cane, woven by Able to Cane, of Warren, ME required holes drilled at even intervals around the interior perimeter. The legs are through-wedged tenons. B S G

El Burro: Pack Bureau September 2013-June 2014 British campaign furniture inspired this desk. For the writer on a campaign or for the mundane travails of life like paying taxes, this bureau provides an ordered space for work. The standard paper dimensions A4 and letter determined the dimensions of the case, while a ratio of radical-2, whose logic also governs the dimensions of the ‘A’ paper format, guides the overall proportions. The legs are demountable. Ash | Aluminum | Steel | Soap

Chair 1 September 2013-June 2014 The chair components are joined with numerous mortise and tenon joints, and, two bridal joints. The chair back is laminated to achieve the curve. The angle between the seat and the back makes the chair most comfortable for dining. The seat is binder cane woven by Able to Cane of Warren, ME. Binder cane is wider than the regular weaving cane. Chair Pas de Deux Summer 2010 The Chair Pas de Deux embodies the choreography of two ballet dancers. The two components of the frame open in arresting tension and close in intimate harmony. The quest for comfort, portability, and sustainability choreographed the design process. The closely-spaced slats of the seat and backrest furnish ample support. The steel knife hinge joins the two components of the frame. Minimal material usage and the chairs ability to fold reduce the environmental impact of production and transportation. Naturally and commercially abundant maple wood is used in this particular prototype. It is cleanly finished in soap. At right: My friend Tiffany takes a seat in Forest Park.
