A week off for the 1st XV in the middle of November was a welcome respite having played fifteen hard-fought matches already. The intensity of modern league rugby has taken its toll with a number of injuries. Notably former captains Chris Hughes and Matt Kiely and present-day captain Alan Manning have been out for some weeks. Scrum-half Sam Hardcastle, nursing long- term ligament damage in his ankle, has not even started the regular season and faces reconstructive surgery in December. There have been a number of others hurt in addition, so our resources have been stretched. They were even more stretched when we faced Old Patesians at the beginning of November when we „lost‟ newcomer Dean Bradley, making a great start as scrum-half, pulled out from the Thursday night training with a groin injury. This was followed by leading points scorer Mike Pope, leading try scorer Rory Hearson and the returning Chris Hughes who were all struck down by colds/flu and were forced to pull out on the Friday. Nonetheless we recorded a dramatic one-point victory with stand-in scrum-half and kicker Scott Chislett holding his nerve to slot over two penalties in the last ten minutes, the second with just a minute or so to go. It was a win against a side that had won all their matches so far this season and were contesting first place with the very strong Taunton side. Dare I say, the last time Old Patesians lost in the league was against us in late January! We have had a remarkable four-match run recently against this strong Cheltenham side with three wins and a draw and just five points separating the sides. What of the season so far. Injuries has been a problem and a three-match run of defeats against Redingensians, Taunton and Coney Hill was a great disappointment but we have recovered very well with three wins and an away draw against the much improved Oxford Harlequins side has seen us in the top half of the table. Prior to the league campaign we had an unprecedented four-match pre-season warm up campaign in August including returning to, what was a favourite pre-season haunt back in the 50s, Jersey. Junior was also able to look up some old pals at Luton as well. It not only gave an opportunity for a number of our home-grown youngsters to have a taste of 1st XV football but also enabled a number of newcomers to introduce themselves. So we welcome Dean Bradley, Will Brooks, Andy Bufton, Ed Driver, Rory Hearson, Adam Higgins, James Kavanagh (who‟s been a round for years but at last has broken into 1st XV contention), Damian Le Roux, the Lynch brothers, Karim and Riad, Ryan Maidment, Luc Meersseman, „Tony‟ Nauluamatua, Harry Pampiglione, Harry Stevenson, Ben Stewart, Ben Wainimal and Frazer Wilford. We also welcomed back Craig Barter after an absence of two seasons but he unfortunately, after just three appearances, has joined the list of injuries. We were delighted to be able to award 1st XV Honours ties to Callum Forrest and Mike Pope in September who join the thirty-five previous winners. Leading the points tally in the league is Mike Pope with 75 and newcomer Rory Hearson is the leading try-scorer with 7. Mike Pope continues his remarkable points scoring achievement. He was leading points scorer with 272 last season a new club record which included 35 penalties also a new club record plus 14 tries, the leading try scorer for the season. Mike was also the joint leading try scorer in the division and the second highest goal kicker. A remarkable achievement in only his first full season. So what of the future. To maintain our status as we have done with so much disruption to player availability has been very encouraging. So we can certainly compete at this level and we hope to improve. That will be helped as Robert Todd is back coaching having caught up with his studies but I think he didn‟t know what the hell to do with himself on Saturdays if the truth be known! But things can‟t be all bad when you‟ve got „Eddie‟ Edwards fit again!

The season so far has been very mixed, we have had key players lost to injury, and we have had some bad losses and had some great wins. The beginning of the season has been far from consistent. But things are starting to look up and results are improving. The team had high expectations at the beginning of the season and we train incredibly hard to make sure we fulfil those expectations. Lets start with the new players who have joined the club, they have all had a great impact on the team and all shown what good players they are. The boys from Havant have settled into the team very quickly, Riad Lynch, Ben Stewart making an instant impact and Karim Lynch who arrived with us after finishing a season out in Canada is starting to show what a good player he is with his strength of running and defence. The final one being Frazer Wilford, his dedication to training is really showing on the pitch with is performances and is doing a great job as stand in captain in my absence. Many more have joined and it is important to mention Rory Hearson, our young winger who is proving to be a great try scorer. Injuries have plagued us in the early part of the season with my self and Matt Kiely out with facial injuries, Ben Stewart with a shoulder and the latest casualty being Adam Higgins who was cementing his place in the team. I have to mention the biggest loss to the team this season, Sam Hardcastle, he is such an influential member of the team. He can score tries out of nothing which all was boosted the team. It is hard to replace a match winner like him! Many have tried but it seems Scott Chislett is doing a fine job after taking over from the injured Dean Bradley. With big players starting to make comebacks we have to believe we will have a great chance after Christmas to really push the top teams. With high spirits among the squad after a string of good results it is important we see out the year the best we can. A further winning streak now will really push us up the title and send out a message to the rest of the teams that we don‟t want to settle for being mid table. With this said promotion is still in our sights, yes we have to rely on other teams losing games but we are quite capable of beating every team in this league and it is our aim to do just that. But to achieve this it is important that we step up to the mark and perform in every game, players like Mike Pope with his pace and skill, Puks with his organisation and Chris Hughes with his devastating runs to mention a few are important to our success. While the coaches are putting in the effort to get the best out of the players on the pitch there are many things that happen off it to keep the club running. A lot of money goes in to the club and it doesn‟t go unnoticed, our sponsors play a big role in where we are today and hopefully they can take the club forward in the future and we would especially like to thank Wood, Mike Stokes and Palmer Snell our front of shirt, back of shirt and sleeve sponsors. Nomads Notes 2nd XV The Nomads play in The Shield division 2. The Shield is a set of structured leagues for 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams seeking fixtures of a higher standard than are available in their local area.

So far this season we have struggled to find consistency in either form, availability or fitness. A great start to the season saw a big scalp taken in the form of Barnes, things looked promising and the decision to remain in The Shield rather than return to Dorset & Wilts Leagues looked like it was the correct one. Two successive defeats on the road to Maidenhead and London Scottish saw good performances from a group of players who knew little about each other or the way each other played. In both games the team performed well with some great individual performances but there was a slight lack of cohesion, the like that can only be gained by training and playing together. Many positives were taken away. The games in October against Henley, Esher, Redingensians and Trojans saw performances which against lesser opposition would have been more than sufficient for a comfortable win although all ended in loss. A number of injuries in both the Nomads and Lions teams reduced the number of available players drastically and a couple of scratch teams were sent out to face opposition who were eminently beatable. A strong, although small, squad travelled to Trowbridge for the first match of the Dorset and Wilts 2nd XV Cup. A decent performance, although lacking some polish, saw a 22-6 victory allow progression to the semi final. Played last week (21/11/09) in horrible conditions, spirited defence and team work produced a 14-0 victory against a team who are placed at the top of Dorset and Wilts 1 (South) League. Local rivals Oakmeadians are to be met in the final, scheduled for 6 th February. Hopefully the good cup run will inspire players to train hard and improve our current standing of 11th in the league. Although some time will be needed to start performing at full potential the calibre of the players appearing for the second team would make many 1 st teams jealous. In fact, no less than 18 players have played for both the 1 st and 2nd teams so far this season, a demonstration of the quality of rugby being played within the extended first team squad. Wanderers Ramblings 3rd XV Itâ&#x20AC;&#x;s been a very encouraging start to the season for the Wanderers. The team has welcomed back a few old faces, and also welcomed a few new young ones who are helping to keep the average age down. The team has put on some strong team performances in the opening part of the season, and currently sit in third place in the league. The Wanderers have also booked a place in the semifinal of the third team cup against Melksham, following an assured display against Wimborne IIIs. Dave Upton 3rd Team Captain

As in previous seasons, the spirit amongst the team has been second to none. This was highlighted again in the recent game against Bridport, where an early injury resulted in the team playing three quarters of the match with 14 men, and only losing out in the final minutes of the match. Don‟t let your business be another failure statistic! Few businesses fail overnight. Most start by underperforming and, with fewer resources available to improve or develop new products, they start to fall behind their competition and reputation is dented. Underperformance leads to losses, and losses to ever-tightening cash flow constraints. Borrowing is constantly up to its limit and the bank starts looking for extra security. The business starts to juggle cash, stretching credit terms and paying suppliers only when it wants to place new orders. The decline accelerates. Before long the business is “on stop” with suppliers – if the business can‟t get supplies it can‟t complete orders, so it can‟t bill customers, so it can‟t get cash in; legal threats turn into legal action. Soon, the bailiff‟s knocking on the door, the landlord‟s changing the locks and the bank won‟t meet the payroll run. It‟s all over. When times are tough, it‟s vital to have a clear strategy in place, with a true understanding of the strengths of the business and of the opportunities open to it. That in turn gives a clear focus for management. The plan needs to include relevant financial information and forecasts, preferably developed in conjunction with external advisers who can bring an objective and independent perspective. Assumptions should be tested and re-tested, and the plan updated in the light of changing conditions. With the plan in place, then performance and progress against that plan should be regularly reviewed, with a particular emphasis on cash flow. Manage the cash position regularly – preferably daily. Take the tough decisions when you still have options, not when you‟re forced into them. When directors fear that their company may be at risk of running into financial difficulties they should take advice from a qualified insolvency practitioner at the earliest possible point. The more time that the insolvency practitioner has, the better the prospects of salvaging all or part of the business, and of finding the solution that avoids or minimises the loss to all concerned. BEDOUINS BIBLE 4th XV

The story so far... Dorset and Wilts 3 south is proving to be the perfect teething ground for this fledgling team proudly sporting the black and gold of BRFC. With a mix of first, second, third and fourth teams the league is remarkably diverse and gives the Bedouin players a great opportunity to learn their trade or test themselves against some wise old heads and some eager (and quick) youngsters. A blend of seasoned campaigners, late returners, novices and ex colts make the Bedouins a vibrant, fun and exciting team to watch. Staying true to the core values of rugby the Bedouins are a real ball-in-hand team who, given half a chance, will run from anywhere on the pitch. Unemcumbered by years of set play patterns the Bedouins philosophy is to get everyone involved and use as much width as possible. This is evident in the scoring sequence which often sees the wings touching down, in spite of the challenging British weather! Enthusiasm and experience in equal measure are the best words to describe the forwards. Whilst not being the heaviest pack in the world they are intelligently lead and punch well above their weight. The learning curve may be steep for this rookie pack but desire, ambition and determination are turning them into a competitive unit, especially at the lineout which is proving a great attacking platform for us. Any team squaring up to them will know that they're in for a hard match. "The forwards win the game and the backs decide by how much"...at least thatâ&#x20AC;&#x;s how the saying goes. The early signs looked very good for the backs with the ever alert and powerful Ben Gardner at 13 causing all sorts of problems. Unfortunately, his season was cut short in the most cruel way when he sustained a multiple fracture to his lower leg in a friendly match against Weymouth. Such is the measure of the man that he was almost more concerned about whether or not the try he was attempting to score had been awarded by the ref (alas it had not) But, after seeing our fallen comrade off to Dorchester hospital (for a three hour operation no less) there was no lack of motivation as we "did it for Ben" and put them to the sword despite being short-handed. The league position unfortunately does not reflect the effort and progress that the Bedouins are making week on week. Regular training and specialist coaching (thanks to Craig W and Dave U) is really starting to pay off and the entire team have been welcomed and made to feel an integral part of the whole Bournemouth set up forming close ties with the higher teams and coaching staff. Many Bedouins have distinguished themselves in higher teams already this season and we look forward collectively to meeting the challenge of introducing the youngster's to their first taste of senior rugby. And when it comes to seniors we have something of a celebrity in our ranks. The one and only JC (Jonny Coxon). Sixty years young and still keen as mustard. If theres a faster, fitter, more determined OAP playing anywhere in Britain today I'd like to see it. When it comes to the endless and often thankless task of organising all the loose ends prior to match day team manager Simon Farrow works tirelessly and selflessly, so that all the lads have to worry about is whether or not they remembered to pack their shorts! Rugby Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x;s rugby is different than in years past. Play and strategy have changed so training must also follow suit. Evaluation of the physical condition of players to tailor rehabilitation and training needs is essential for developing and maintaining a competitive edge. The Anglo European College of Chiropractic, an associate College of Bournemouth University, has been in the forefront of musculoskeletal health care with the application of therapeutic and functional exercise protocols in diverse populations. A new 1500 square foot clinic with diagnostic ultrasound, digital x-ray and fluoroscopy opened in January 2009. The facilities include a state of the art Exercise Centre to meet the functional assessment and rehabilitation needs including those of elite and recreational athletes. Functional assessment for training and rehabilitation is under the direction of Neil Osborne, a chiropractor who has completed his PhD in rehabilitation and has an international reputation in the area of functional assessment and movement control. Dr Osborne heads a team of clinicians and exercise scientists who have developed protocols for the assessment of rugby and football players. Depending on need and application, the assessment process takes from 45 minutes to two hours to complete. Utilising the data collected from these studies, the team meets and formulates a plan of action individualised to address the specific concerns of the player and coaching staff. In addition, members of the team are in frequent communication with other experts around the world and have access to their opinions. The team also benefits from the services of a BASES accredited sports psychologist on fulltime staff at the College and clinical nutritionists. The team is available for monitoring and updates to programmes. Some players and coaches may find it necessary to complete early programmes in the Exercise Centre under the watchful eyes and direction of members of the clinical functional and therapeutic exercise staff. These sessions are useful for rehabilitation of injuries and help instil motor and movement patterns for â&#x20AC;&#x153;muscle memoriesâ&#x20AC;? so that continual training can be carried out as efficiently and effectively as possible. With clinical facilities which include examination and treatment rooms and the onsite diagnostic imaging facilities, the active sport and athletic population are served by readily available diagnostic and treatment management of acute and chronic injuries in a timely manner. Some of the myriad problems presented at the clinic are dealt with on site and others are referred to specialists and consultants. The Clinic has cared for players from a number of local rugby teams, subsequently developing expertise in these injuries. SUMMER CAMP 2009 Parents collecting their children at the end of Bournemouth Rugby‟s Southern Sports coaching week were full of praise for the organisers and coaches, some even claiming it was far better than similar courses run by Premier Division Clubs. Boys and girls took part in the course. Split in to three groups by age, the children were coached in attack, defence, line running and support play. The very young ones were introduced to contact play whilst the older ones were given tips on how to further improve their game. Advice was given on conditioning, warming up and general playing attitude. All the children were receptive and ended the week as better players and looking forward to the start of the season in September. The week wasn‟t all hard work though and the looks on the children‟s faces indicated that they also had FUN. Bournemouth Rugby Club is blessed with a first class coaching team and all the children enjoyed hearing how the game is “really” played from Samoan internationals Junior Paramore and Pux Ngapaku as well as Scottish International Fraser Wilford. The coaching team was lead by David Dunn and ably assisted by Aissa Randle, Sam Hardcastle and Mike Pope. Corporate Insolvencies update Tim Corfield of local leading firm of Insolvency Practitioners, Griffin & King comments on the present position. The latest figures published by The Insolvency Service recently reveal that the number of corporate insolvencies in England and Wales has risen by 14.6% in the past year to reach 4,716in the third quarter of 2009. Many Government initiatives designed to support businesses are due to be wound up over the coming months and this may spark an even greater number of business failures. It appears that many companies are surviving the recession sustained only by Government initiatives such as HMRCâ&#x20AC;&#x;s Time to Pay. The Government is now owed over 1 billion in delayed tax payments and this cannot roll on indefinitely. There is a risk to all businesses when these initiatives are wound down. A sudden withdrawal of Government support could lead to real problems. This position would be exacerbated once interest rates begin to climb again. Government initiatives due to come to an end include: Stamp duty holiday due to end December 2010 The lower 15% rate of VAT due to end January 1 2010 The car scrappage scheme due to end in February 2010 Enterprise Finance Guarantee Due to end March 2010 Many struggling businesses have managed to survive by cutting costs. These are now down to the bone. As the recession drags on options are beginning to run out. More and more businesses are trying to restructure through Pre-pack Administrations. Company Voluntary Arrangements have also been growing in popularity. However, the Government has just begun a crackdown on pre-packs, with HMRC demanding that six months of VAT be paid upfront before it allows companies to begin trading again. These escape route have kept more businesses running and secured a lot of jobs. If HMRC starts getting too tough this will lead to even more corporate failures and the job losses associated with this. Banks are continuing to come under pressure from the Government to give struggling companies some breathing space. They are also delaying liquidating businesses because low asset values are acting as a barrier to recovering the debts owed to them. www.bournemouth-rugby.co.uk Are Hamstring Tears Your Achilles Heel? The most common injury to affect England's 2003 World Cup winning squad was hamstring strains and tears. This often occurs due to repeated trauma on the muscle during explosive sprinting and changing directions. Any ache, cramping or tension in the hamstring muscle is important to get looked at and treated by a sports physiotherapist as this is the first warning signal that the muscle is under strain and at risk of rupture. What Can I Do To Prevent Hamstring Tears? A solid warm up of approx 20 minutes is essential to warm up the muscles making them more extensible. Start slowly, jogging, jumping on the spot, changing direction and gradually increasing the pace to match pace. There is some evidence that compression shorts on the thighs helps keep the muscle extensible and warm. Sports massage mid week (not before a match) through the hamstrings also prevents injury as knots and micro tears cause scar tissue build up in the muscle making it weak in parts and more likely to tear. A good stretching programme mid week also keeps the extensibility in the muscle which tends to tighten up with training, weights and even sitting at work for long periods. Prevention is infinitely superior to the cure as once the hamstring is torn it often re ruptures and can cause problem for weeks or months. What If I Suspect A Tear? The immediate treatment is RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) even if it is a small tear to reduce the inflammation immediately. All tears should then be reviewed by a doctor and/or Chartered physiotherapist. The severity of the injury then determines the rest of the treatment programme and whether the player should be off for 2 days, 2 weeks or 2 months. Youth and Mini Rugby Bournemouth Youth and Mini Rugby Section is a very popular and growing part of our club, with approximately 300 registered players in the age groups from U7s to U16s. The introduction to rugby starts with tag rugby for the U7s and U8s, with the introduction of contact from U9s onwards. All of our coaches are RFU certified and all persons involved with the coaching and operation of the Youth and Mini section are CRB certified in accordance with the RFU policy. The entire section of coaches, managers, referees, assistants, committee members etc, all provide an enormous amount of time on a voluntary basis, to ensure we provide the best opportunities for Never too young to start all who want to participate in the game of rugby. During the season, all of our age groups will participate in coaching sessions with regular home and away games and tournaments being played from September through to April. The U11s through to the U16s will participate in games to decide the Dorset Champions and then onto the Dorset & Wilts finals. Last season we saw the introduction of our Girls U15s team who had a very positive first season and due to this, we are also introducing the Girls U18s team this season. Bournemouth RFC is also very proud of their Mini and Midi Tournament, which has become one of the largest rugby events on the South Coast of England. The U7s to U12s event hosts twenty clubs at all age groups, with over 2,000 participants, with clubs attending from England, and Wales and last year from Germany. This year we will be again hosting our Youth Tournament for the U13s to U16s on the Saturday prior to the Mini/Midi event, on Sunday 11th April 2010.
