t’s the roar of Ohio Stadium on a brisk autumn afternoon. The brick-laden streets of historic German Village. The saxophone player on the Short North sidewalk serenading the bustling Gallery Hop crowd. It’s the razzle dazzle of a Broadway musical inside the illustrious Ohio Theatre. The milk-chocolatey chunks in Graeter’s ice cream. The polar bears diving into the water at the best zoo in the country. It’s the smack of a triple down the left-field line at Huntington Park. The sliders at White Castle. The patio at Lindey’s. It’s enjoying a beer watching the Blue Jackets. Riding in a space capsule at the nation’s top-ranked science center. Grubbing on Belgian waffles at the North Market. It’s Easton Town Center. It’s cream puffs at Schmidt’s. It’s Jack Nicklaus and Jack Hanna and Jeni. This city has brought the universe angels on runways (thank you, Mr. Wexner). It’s served square burgers ’round the world (we love you, Dave Thomas). And it’s home to The Statehouse, The Memorial Tournament and The Best Damn Band in the Land. It’s also amassed a collection of ambitious entrepreneurs, brilliant philanthropists, talented designers, celebrated artists and world-class chefs. Columbus is the girl next door who suddenly got sexy—and now, she’s trying to kiss you. Kiss her back.

In this issue, we give you 50 ways how—50 things to do to get the most out of the city we love. We’ve also gathered more than $2,000 in prizes to help to you do it. We’re giving away a prize a day for the month of May; just follow us online, on Facebook, on Twitter or on Instagram for daily details on how to win. You already live here. So do it like you mean it. And enjoy.

he day in the life of a gallery gal: Where is she going, and what is she wearing? We drew inspiration from Angela Meleca, owner of Downtown’s Angela Meleca Gallery, who graciously let us into her work space (and home; she and her family live above the gallery) for a day to shoot this issue’s fashion spread. Here’s a peek behind the scenes. –Heather Weekley

Model Britany Martindale, 27, works in advertising. Fun fact? She won Miss Teen International in 2004. “When I was 16 or 17, I started doing pageants,” she says. “For me, it was an opportunity to make friends. I went to a small private school, and there were five girls in my graduating class.”

Makeup artist Jade Piatt gave Martindale a bold eye. “It’s something that states confidence,” Piatt says. “A smoky eye doesn’t just have to be for a night out.” 16 capiTal-STyle.com • may/June 2014

In chrIsty’s shoes

In Christy’s shoes co-founders Becky Sweeney, Katrina Zidel and Jacki Barnett

Katrina Zidel’s twin sister, Christy Levy Peters, loved a great pair of shoes. “She had an amazing shoe collection,” Zidel says. “She was not afraid to wear the brightest and craziest things.” After Christy passed away in 2007 at age 34 from brain cancer, Zidel and two friends started In Christy’s Shoes, an organization that puts on a shoe fashion show each year in honor of Christy. “I thought, ‘There’s no way I can go through every year without talking about her and connecting with her,’ ” Zidel says. “We wanted to remember the things about her and what she loved.” In its 6th year, the event has raised more than $200,000 and has even expanded to the D.C. area, where co-founder Jacki Barnett now lives. “The goal is to do this in as many states as we can to continue raising awareness and money to help empower women and fuel our mission,” Zidel says. Money raised benefits both Dress for Success Columbus and Zusman Hospice, a facility where Christy spent the last six months of her life. This year’s In Christy’s Shoes event is happening on Thursday, May 8 at the Walter Commons at St. Charles. It begins at 6 p.m., and tickets cost $60 per person. It all began in a family kitchen in 1916, when Anthony Zanetos began to experiment with making candy. His results were so delicious, he opened his own confectionery in 1916. His son, Thomas, joined him, eventually forming the Anthony-Thomas Candy Company in 1952. Four generations of Zanetos candy makers have contributed to the company’s success. Today, Anthony-Thomas makes millions of pounds of candy every year. Each piece is made fresh daily, always in the best of taste. Order online or visit one of our 13 neighborhood shoppes

lizabEth Smart waS 14 whEn ShE waS abductEd from her family’s Salt Lake City home in 2002. After nine months of unfathomable abuse, she was found just 18 miles away. Now 26, Smart has founded the Elizabeth Smart Foundation to prevent crimes against children. She has written the best-selling memoir My Story. And she has crusaded for victims in myriad ways, including testifying before lawmakers, helping create a survivor’s guide for the Department of Justice and speaking to groups nationwide. She was recently in Columbus visiting The Center for Family Safety and Healing at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, which she commended for its innovative system of combining several victims’ services under one roof. “This is fantastic,” she said. “It’s an amazing center.” We caught up with her there to talk about help and hope. Here are conversation highlights.  In your book, you chose not to sugarcoat your abduction experiences, which included multiple daily rapes. What has it been like sharing such details with the world? It was important to me to share those details so other survivors know they’re not alone. I felt like I was alone. I felt like a blemish on the face of the world. This [rape] is not something you need to be embarrassed about. You can talk about it. You can become who you want to be.  You’re now married and obviously in an intimate relationship with one man. How does your past affect your present in that regard? I think I would just be one in a long list of people to say someone who goes

through rape tends to feel dirty, tends to feel worthless. But that was rape, pure and simple. That was something wicked and evil. My relationship with my husband is sacred. It is love. And rape and sex are not the same thing.  What is the most important message people should hear about child abuse survivors? I think it’s important to stress there’s always hope. There’s hope that you can overcome what you’ve been through. It’s not what happens to us that makes us who we are; it’s our choices that count. You can let being a rape survivor define you. But I’m a harpist. I’m a horseback rider. I’m a wife. I’m a mother of two dogs.

“finding time for your health and happiness is critical,” says jillian michaels

fit for life Story by krISTY eCkerT

P

ersonal trainer and wellness expert Jillian Michaels recently visited the Palace Theatre in Columbus as part of her motivational tour, “Maximize Your Life.” Michaels, made famous on reality TV series The Biggest Loser, talked with us about parenthood, fitness favorites and more. Here are highlights.

 What sparked your passion for fitness? I don’t actually have a passion for fitness. I couldn’t care less about fitness. Fitness for me is just one tool that I utilize to help people build a better life. And I began to appreciate very young that when you feel strong physically, you are subsequently powerful and strong in other aspects of your life.

Rotary Food and Wine Experience at the Granville Art Affair and Rotary Wine Festival June 14, 2014 5 PM - 8 PM Tickets to the Rotary Food and Wine Experience are on sale now for $50. Beer and wine tickets for tastings on the lawn will also be available on the days of the event. All proceeds support the Rotary Club of Granville Foundation. Learn more and buy your tickets at www.granvillerotaryfoodandwine.com.

 Within one week in 2012, your partner gave birth to your son, Phoenix, and the two of you adopted a daughter, Lukensia. How did becoming a mom change you? Gosh, it changes every aspect of your life without a doubt. Jack Nicholson said this best in As Good as It Gets, and I actually can say it’s in my experience with parenthood: It makes you want to be better person—a better you, a better person to the rest of the world.

 How did it change your workout routine? It changed it dramatically in the beginning. It took me a while to truly find the balance. And while I don’t get the opportunity to go to a 90-minute yoga class very often, I still find the time to get four workouts in in a week, even if they’re only 30 minutes. And the key is, trade off with your partner. Ask aunts and uncles or grandparents to watch them for a while. Get out and play and be active with your kids. Go hiking with them. Walk the dog with them. Go for bike rides with them. Take active vacations. There are ways to do it when you strike a balance. 36 Capital-Style.Com • may/June 2014

 Ah, finding balance—the endless quest. If somebody was to ask me what’s the secret of life, it’s finding balance. And while it does oscillate on a day-to-day basis, finding the time for your health and happiness is critical.  What’s the most common excuse you hear about why someone can’t get healthy? I would say money and time. Which it doesn’t cost money to eat less food, and if you found the time to watch your favorite television show, I guarantee you can find the time to work out.  What’s your favorite workout? I’ve always liked martial arts. I love doing MMA and kickboxing—I think that’s really fun.  Go-to healthy snack? I go back and forth on that. Right now, I’ve been eating this stuff called KRAVE jerky. It’s like this gourmet jerky with no nitrites or preservatives or artificial ingredients.  If you’re splurging on a meal, what do you eat? French fries or chocolate of any kind. Ice cream.  What do you do to wind down? Play with my kids. I find that with your kids, you can’t really be elsewhere. They demand your full attention, and it allows you to really get out of the nonsense and the chaos and the craziness of everyday life.  Your perfect Saturday: What is it? Taking my kids to their horses—we are a big equestrian family. Going to the farmers’ market, having lunch.  OK, on to the motivational tour. Are your kids touring with you? Oh yes. Absolutely. I actually get to spend more time with them on tour than in my everyday life, because they go to school and I’m working during the day.  Go-to workout on the road? That’s a challenging one. I try to find a Flywheel studio and get a spin class in. A jog is easy. Body weight training exercises— push-ups, lunges, squats, sit-ups.

authentically Marketing whiz Mary Cusick helped grow annual sales at Bob Evans from $70 million to $2 billion during her three-decade tenure. Now, she’s been tapped to rebrand Ohio. Meet the woman finding the cool—and figuring out how to share it. Story by KriSty EcKErt • PhotoS by WiLL ShiLLiNG

I

t Is essentIally the anchor of columbus’ South Side—the place that has long provided free and discounted child care, education and love for the city’s neediest kids. but the South Side Learning & Development center recently had 40 spots open in its head Start program, and only 20 were filled. the center’s board president understood the potential detriment, so she issued a challenge. “We’re going out into the community, and we’re going door to door and talking to people about the head Start slots,” Mary cusick told the board. “We’re going to make this happen.” She rallied her troops to walk through neighborhoods foreign to most executives, to knock on doors, and to stand at a nearby Kroger on a cold, rainy day, handing out free pizza and spreading the word. the movement worked: All 40 spots soon filled. “Mary is extremely unique and visionary, and very hands on,” said roberta bishop, the center’s executive director. “Mary’s the kind of

person that leaves no stone unturned.” And cusick, 58, does it—whatever “it” is—with warm authenticity, wicked smarts and a whole bunch of gusto. She’s the boss who remembers that last week was your son’s soccer tryouts and wonders how he did. She’s the woman at the dinner table beside you who is, by night’s end, your friend. She’s not a glass-is-half-full kind of gal; hers is definitely three-quarters filled, it’s delicious, and those around her wonder where they can get a taste of what she’s having, thank you very much. Now, this farmer’s daughter-turnedexec, who helped grow bob Evans’ annual sales from $70 million to $2 billion during her three-decade tenure, is tackling a new challenge: directing tourismohio. in other words, you’re paying her to find ohio’s cool, to showcase ohio’s cool and to convince outsiders ohio is cool enough to visit. Jane Grote Abell, chairman of the board at Donatos Pizza, said cusick is perfect for the role. “She is light years beyond how most people think strategically,” said Abell, who has worked with cusick on different

philanthropic boards. “She’s so engaging, and she’s so contagious. She can rally people behind a cause.”

I

t was 1978, and Cusick was graduating from Miami University in less than two weeks when her younger sister called from the family’s dairy farm in northwest Delaware County. Her high school teacher’s husband, she said, was looking to hire someone in marketing at Bob Evans. So Cusick called. She promised him she’d be at the Columbus-area headquarters on Saturday to talk. “I didn’t have a car. I didn’t have a suit to wear. I didn’t have a portfolio,” Cusick said, laughing at the memory. “But hey—it was only Thursday!” She bought a portfolio, borrowed a suit and hopped a bus for the two-hour trek. Perhaps the men who interviewed her—including CEO Dan Evans—were impressed with the fact Cusick had grown up bailing hay, learning a solid work ethic from parents who milked 80 cows twice a day. Perhaps they respected the competitive edge Cusick had long honed while showing horses (she once was ranked third in the nation in the amateur division, “a big deal” for a small-town girl with modest means). Perhaps they identified the ambition she showed as editor of her high school paper, or the likeability that won her the Delaware County Fair queen crown. Or maybe they talked to the folks at Whirlpool, where Cusick had parlayed a summer job working the assembly line into an internship in the company’s communications office. Either way, despite the company being a fairly distinctive boys’ club, they asked her to CUSICK THROUGH THE YEARS: As a cheerleader at Buckeye Valley High School; on her family farm with horse Katrina Lee; outside of Lindey’s as a 20-something; and early in her career with Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken and Bob Evans at a dinner after the Kentucky State Fair

meet Bob Evans himself the next week. She won his approval, graduated on Sunday, and on Tuesday started as assistant director of public relations for Bob Evans, which at the time had about 30 restaurants, roughly $70 million in annual sales and no actual director of public relations. “I had a very long title, and a very little salary,” Cusick said. “But I was happy.” She drove Bob Evans from opening to opening, just the two of them in a car, reading maps and talking. She watched him grin and grip. She listened to him speak with governors and senators. “He was an innovative guy,” Cusick said. “He had 50 ideas a day, and if you could focus on the right two, great things could happen.” Her trickiest challenge? Changing the perception that Bob Evans was an old brand for old people, she said. She did it with things like the Bob-B-Q campaign, which included T-shirts that said, “I like you. You’re saucy.” She also started the company’s charitable arm, which by the end of her tenure was giving $1 million a year in cash and food. And she did it all while navigating a work world of men, learning when and how to ask for promotions, occasionally explaining what was or was not appropriate conversation around ladies, and eventually launching the group known as the WOBE—the Women of Bob Evans—to help mentor other women. She did it beautifully, said Angie Homan. Homan started at Bob Evans at age 23 as a brand manager, and Cusick was her boss’s boss. Yet she counseled Homan like a mother, encouraging her to return to school for her MBA, and giving her things from an inspirational paper weight to big-picture advice. “You never know at what moment you’ll have the opportunity to change somebody else’s life, or that somebody else may change yours,” Cusick once told her. It’s a sentiment Homan, 31, carries with her still. Now the director of marketing at HealthSpot, she continues talking with Cusick, who makes the time to share articles and books. “She’s been a positive role model,” Homan said, “for a lot of people.”

T

he day after Cusick stood on a Downtown stage, hearing the applause of hundreds as she was named a YWCA Woman of Achievement, she buried her mother. She had been running, running, running: It was 2010, and Bob Evans boasted nearly 600 restaurants. After being the company’s voice on Wall Street as senior vice president of investor relations and corporate communications, Cusick was named senior vice president of restaurant marketing, a role in which she managed a $24 million

In 2011, at 55, Cusick retired. “I did it because I could, and I guess because I believed I had more to give and offer, and that doing that in a different environment would be a good stretch,” she said. “It was good for me to stop and be mindful, to live with more intent.” Of course, sitting still is not exactly Cusick’s forte. That’s according to her husband, Dave Wible, who retired last year from his post as executive director of the North Market and whose two sons Cusick helped raise. Even on a week’s vacation, Wible said, his wife will read seven or eight books—on top of three

newspapers a day. “Mary is always up for hearing different points of view and offering points of view and being open to different ideas,” he said. “Mary wants her mind engaged.” Cusick launched 8778/NEXT, a consulting company that helps with leadership and growth strategy for companies and individuals. She spent time at Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business as executive director of the Initiative for Managing Services. She was named chair of the advisory board of directors at Thirty-One Gifts. And she continued giving back to various charity organizations. She had been asked to brainstorm ideas on who could replace the TourismOhio director, and she offered a list of names. But the folks seeking her input returned to ask about a person not on her list: her. Suddenly, the girl who proudly grew up here, the college student who studied here and the executive who made a career here saw an opportunity to use her marketing prowess in a way that sparks her soul. “I think she really looked at it as a way she could sort of give back to the greater community at large,” her husband said. “She has this fierce sense of Ohio pride.” The governor keeps telling her, Cusick said, to make Ohio cool. “You can’t make something cool,” she replies. “It has to be cool.” Luckily, she said, Ohio is. “We don’t have obvious cool. We don’t have the Pacific Ocean; we don’t have the Tetons. But I do think we have this hip, intelligent cool,” Cusick said, firing off a list of examples, from Granville to Oxford, the Short North to Cleveland. “There are cool things about Ohio. And I think we have to celebrate that—not lust for somebody else’s cool.” Ohio doesn’t need a promotional campaign, she said. It needs a brand. And for a woman who believes in fate, this opportunity may be precisely why she felt compelled to stop, to breathe, and to reevaluate—because she’s game to create one.

G

eorge Zimmerman, who leads the “Pure Michigan” charge for the state up north, sat beside Cusick during a February lunch forum and told the Athletic Club of Columbus audience about his state’s successful campaign, which costs about $30 million a year. Cusick, who started her new role in December, noted that her annual budget is $10 million. But she’s not complaining. “These are your dollars,” she told the room. “And I feel a really great responsibility to spend them well.”

Then, she turned to Zimmerman, with whom she had bantered all luncheon long. “I’m just here to tell you,” she said dryly, “look out.” The room erupted in laughter. It was an example of Cusick at her finest— spunky and engaging, with natural political savvy. And joke as she may, she knows tourism is serious business: Visitors spend roughly $29 billion a year in Ohio, Cusick said, and 400,000 jobs are related to tourism. “It’s really important to the economy,” she said. For now, she’ll allow Ohio’s alreadyrunning “Too much fun for just one day” campaign to play out through year’s end. Meanwhile, she’s finding the cool—zigzagging her way around the state, from bigcity restaurants to small-town museums. On a recent trip to Cleveland, for example, Cusick’s days were chock full. She attended meetings about Cleveland’s new branding campaign, explored area attractions and talked with local businesses leaders. The friend she stayed with—former Bob Evans attorney Mary Garceau, who now works for Sherwin-Williams—was awed, then, at what Cusick wanted to do on her off time: attend the Cleveland International Film Fest, try new eateries and visit the West Side Market. “One of her gifts is to be able to take brands, take companies, and really help them define who they are, and what their core values and qualities are, and help market themselves around that,” Garceau said. “I can’t think of anybody who is more passionate about the state of Ohio than Mary. And I think she’s such a wonderful, creative force.” Even Sunday drives are no longer that, Cusick’s husband said. One recent weekend morning, they headed out of their German Village home for a quick breakfast, Wible said. “It was like, oh, well, since we’re in the Short North, there’s an all-Ohio craft exhibit and show at the fairgrounds, so we went there and wandered around,” he said. “And on the way home, the AAA state of Ohio travel show was going on at Vets, so we went there too.” Sit down with Cusick for lunch, and she’ll ask about your favorite places to go and things to do. She may even jot them in the notebook she carries to record the ideas she culls. And she’s loving it all—meeting people she wouldn’t otherwise have met, tasting things she wouldn’t otherwise have tasted, doing things she wouldn’t otherwise have done. “I,” Cusick said, “have an awesome opportunity.” Apparently, so does Ohio.

Leslie Malkoff was The Limited’s longtime merchandising whiz. Now, she uses her eye for style to help companies nationwide make their spaces more appealing—and their goods more sellable Story by HEATHEr WEEKLEY • Photo by WILL SHILLINg

eslie Malkoff spent her Monday nights in meetings, often until 11 p.m., developing ways to improve floor plans and displays at The Limited’s stores. Working under retail legend Les Wexner as director of visual merchandising for The Limited during the chain’s heyday, Malkoff would sit in offices as dusk turned to dark, debating which color of tops should go, which should stay and where they ought to be placed in stores. The Southern California native traveled the country frequently, training managers on how to merchandise products. In 2001, after a 20-year career with The Limited, Leslie had an epiphany. “I looked at myself in the mirror, and I was 46 years old,” she said. “I said, ‘Oh my god, I forgot to get married.’ I didn’t want to work an 80-hour week anymore.” So she said goodbye to The Limited and took time to mull her next step. First she got married to the man she’d been dating, Dr. Kurt Malkoff, a clinical psychologist and owner of Matrix Psychological Services. Then, she turned to her career. Leslie had a creative

itch she wanted to continue to scratch. Using her eye for visual merchandising and her experience at The Limited, she decided to start a business focused on retail where retail isn’t the frontrunner. “Hotels, hospitals, botanical gardens, zoos… They all have retail but they’re not in retail,” Leslie said. “But a kid going to the zoo likes to buy a toy, and the parents expect it.” Enter her company, Visualopathy. Cultural attractions across the country hire Leslie and her small team (one other fulltime employee, one part-time employee and several contractors) to visit, learn about the brand and customer, and present them with the details on what to purchase and how to stage the merchandise. “I don’t buy anything; I source,” Leslie said. “We go to the gift mart in Atlanta or New York, and we source product. We pull catalogs, talk to vendors and come back to (clients) with all the information. We put together themes and stories. That’s what sells, and that’s what creates an impact.” Visualopathy works for several local clients, including the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium,

project visualopaThy Five Visualopathy projects, as described by founder Leslie Malkoff

600 Goodale: The Common area The multi-use clubhouse was designed for resident events, parties and more, so we tried to give it a casual, comfy and not up-tight attitude. The juxtaposition of surfaces such as the boxwood and barn board alongside a golden throne give the room that little bit of class, little bit of rock ‘n’ roll feel. 600 Goodale: The FiTness room We asked ourselves, how can you be whimsical about a subject that so many have a love/hate relationship with? For the answer, we researched black and white fitness images from the 40s and 50s—a time when health and wellness was not even on the social radar. Then we superimposed some of today’s trendy fitness equipment on top.

denver BoTaniC Gardens The Denver Botanic Gardens introduced an exhibit called “Dinosaurs in the Garden,” which ran concurrent with the opening of its new visitors’ center and retail store. In an effort to create a connection between the product and the fixture, we used two tables that literally looked like they were dug up from the earth. ColumBus Zoo The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium requested that we create an underwaterthemed shop designed to appeal to adult shoppers. Our design team sourced amazing high-end table top items, jewelry, home décor and art. To complete the experience, we lined the cabinets with a laser-printed material designed to look like you are underwater.

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, and Wexner Center for the Arts store. And the company travels, too, counting places like the Denver Botanic Gardens and Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania among its customers. “I’ve always loved creative challenges,” Leslie said. “When we did the Denver Botanic Gardens, they had one cement wall in the store and the other walls were glass. So where do you put the product? We found a company that does floating walls, and we merchandised them. It’s that kind of challenge that is fun. Every day is different.” urt came home one day and told Leslie he had run into family friend Brett Kaufman, CEO of Kaufman Development. Kaufman had explained he was working on an apartment complex project and, knowing Leslie was in retail, wanted to talk to her. “Is there going to be a store there?” Leslie asked. No, Kurt replied. “Why do you get me involved with these things?” she responded. But a meeting with Kaufman turned into a partnership that’s lasted for multiple projects. Kaufman Development’s communities include The Gramercy in New Albany, 600 Goodale and the newly opened 801 Polaris—and Leslie has decorated them all. “Brett wanted someone who knows how to sell visually,” Leslie said. “It’s all about coordinated looks and sightlines. You walk into the leasing area and figure out which is the most visible wall. That’s where your impact will be. It’s no different than a store.” Using Kaufman’s ideas for spaces featuring vintage, industrial and modern elements, Visualopathy creates the plans and finds the furniture and décor. A large wall mural in the fitness center of 600 Goodale, for example, shows women from the 1940s and 50s exercising, and Leslie added a twist: She superimposed pictures of modern-day workout equipment like Kettlebells and medicine balls onto the photo. And a bar area in the common room of The Gramercy— where people often gather with their laptops—has keyboard keys carefully glued atop the bar from one end to the other. “I usually hand over to Leslie what is most likely very disorganized and scattered thoughts of what something is supposed to be,” Kaufman said. “She’s able to pull that together in a way that actually works and makes sense and is clearly articulated to the user.” It’s these opportunities that Leslie finds rewarding.

“We have to keep true to our point of view,” Leslie said. “We want to leave at the end of the day and feel good about it.” And when she does leave at the end of the day, Leslie, now 58, heads just down the street, from her German Village office to her German Village home. She enjoys a worklife balance that includes early-morning workouts and walks with her two dogs. Several times a year she heads to Aspen, Colo., where she and Kurt have a second home. She’ll tell you, though, that when she’s not hiking in the mountains, she’s sitting at her desk and working in her small office there. “I think I work pretty hard, but I can’t even come close to how she works,” Kurt says. “She’s hard-wired. She’s just really good at what she does, and it’s a great team she’s assembled.” In the end, Leslie’s goal isn’t to employ 25 people or make millions. It’s to finish a job so that she’s happy with the result. And while she’s happy to have exited the retail rat race, Leslie credits her two decades with The Limited for skills that have helped make Visualopathy a success and taught philosophies that have stuck with her. “I wouldn’t have the confidence to do what I’m doing now had it not been for those 20 years,” she said. “I had a good education. You have to create an environment where you like coming into work.” And that, she does. “I like coming here every day,” she said. “I don’t get tired of it.”

“Stay strong are the words

Diana Davidson often thought to herself as she went through one of the toughest times in her life. After being diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing surgery and radiation, Davidson will celebrate one year of being cancer free on Oct. 31. Now she says those inspirational words out loud to others experiencing similar circumstances. Davidson is married to Columbus Blue Jackets president John Davidson. The couple and their family moved to Columbus in late 2013. Jeff Weisman of Meyers Jewelers was one of the first people that John and Diana met. He made a lasting impression from day one and has been there for the couple throughout Diana’s battle with cancer. He designed a special piece of jewelry to celebrate and honor her courage. Jeff designed a special cancer ribbon necklace for Diana that she wears every day to remind herself just how fortunate she is. Diana says the hardest part about having cancer was telling her family, especially explaining it to her two daughters. “As a mother, you are always there for your children, she said. “I was always so healthy and strong — cancer made no sense. Which is why Diana said the scariest part about finding out she had cancer was that there were no warning signs. “I didn’t feel any different. I felt completely normal and healthy.

She had two older twin sisters, and they both went through it and passed away. My grandmother had it. My mom got tested for the BRCA gene, and it came back inconclusive. She did have a double mastectomy. The same goes for my cousin— she has the same strain. I decided to get the test as well. Fortunately I do not have it, which is nice for my daughter, too. It’s important to know your family history and your risks. In Columbus, it’s a great community event. Just the knowledge is empowering. My mom and cousin probably would have gone down that path, but they’re minimizing that risk now.”

A lot of people assume the progress means breast cancer isn’t as big of a threat, but that’s not the truth. There is so much more to be done and so much misinformation out there. It’s important that the race is something people attend. It’s more than your run-of-the-mill 5K. Survivors are crossing the finish line and doing something they didn’t think they’d be doing. It’s a big triumph for them. My hope is that the one thing we can do is reenergize what the race means. When you’re there, you can’t help but feel it. There’s no reason we can’t make it bigger and better.”

While all practitioners have access to the same injectable filler products, their results can vary widely depending on their level of training, amount of experience, individual philosophy and injection technique. Dr. Manraj (Raj) Bath of Bella Cosmedica custom aesthetics is emerging as the local go-to guy for lovely, natural-looking lip augmentations. In addition to lecturing nationally to cosmetic practitioners regarding his “Lip6” technique, Bath has been published in The American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery. He

even has a patent pending for his novel approach to lip augmentations. As a result, word of his work is spreading in local and national circles with lip sculpting becoming one of Bella Cosmedica’s most frequently requested procedures. “Any practitioner can use filler to make a patient’s lips larger, but that’s not necessarily what makes lips or the patient more attractive,” explains Bath. His patients appreciate the extra time he spends in careful evaluation of their lips and surrounding anatomy using the “Lip6” system. “We seek to enhance a patient’s own anatomy and give them a very natural appearance while educating them about what makes for an attractive set of lips.”

Seek to enhance your God-given anatomy for the most natural looking result. 3.) Ask about anesthetic options. Many fillers contain a numbing agent, but that may not be enough to maximize comfort during treatment.

ou know the childhood fantasies you once loved? Well, what happened to those characters, those settings, when you stopped believing in them? That’s the idea behind Walters’ collection, which he calls “Deteriorating Fantasy.” “It’s about these worlds crumbling and deteriorating and falling apart,” Walters says. He realized the concept by creating individual “anti-fairytales” for each piece. Several of his garments are covered in the hand-beaded script of these stories (which took him around 50 hours per garment), and he’s incorporated whimsical accessories to keep with his theme. He also collaborated with local painter Michael Bush to create one of the collection’s signature pieces. Personal style: I have the same T-shirt in 10 different colors. I just wear it. It doesn’t matter to me what I wear—it’s just about what I create. Toughest challenge in creating this collection: Just the fitting of some of the garments. Some of them are constructed very precisely, and some of the fabrics that I was using were not supposed to be used for garments. I had some challenges with that. Celebrity he’d like to see in his designs: Charlize Theron. I have a picture of her in my sketchbook.

“I kept throwing in magical pieces, like the jumbo knit I made. It’s oversized but still whimsy.” —Bryston Walters

omfort and color are essential to Jones, who noticed that both lacked in the working world during her summer internship in Florida. But color was everywhere in the form of tropical flowers, so she photographed them, put them into Photoshop and created her own prints for her collection, “Tropical Excursion.” It includes bright and fun professional clothing for men and women, made to make you feel like you’re on vacation at all times. “My prints are all very tropical, very colorful, vibrant, happy designs,” she says, “so that even if you can’t leave work, you feel like you’re at that tropical environment within your own cubical.” Personal style: Very classic. I like really clean silhouettes, and I like to have color. I love color. And I love patterns. Toughest challenge in creating this collection: Staying motivated to do it after I got off of work. I intern at Thirty-One Gifts part-time, and I would usually go straight from work to the studio. Then I’d have to stay there until about 2 a.m. Celebrity she’d like to see in her designs: Solange Knowles in my poncho and lavender short. Post-graduation plans: I’ll be doing CMH Fashion Week with my sister in the fall. We’ll be combining our print aesthetic and designs to create another collection.

riscoll, who’s been sewing since she was 12, took to music to inspire her senior collection. Woodkid’s 2013 album “The Golden Age” is about the story of a soft and malleable child becoming an adult, hardened like marble. Taking a cue from that, Driscoll mixed hard and soft elements in the form of silhouettes and prints. She also crafted the collection’s belts and leather accessories herself.

Personal style: It’s actually close to the stuff I make. I wear a lot of black. In the winter, I like to wear lots of layers, and I like metal and edgier things. Toughest challenge in creating this collection: Trying to balance all of my other classes and internships. I interned at a museum called the Kelton House over the summer, and I’m an assistant for a lady who does custom corsets. Celebrity she’d like to see in her designs: Tilda Swinton

arrison’s collection was inspired by the magpie bird, which builds its nest by gathering elements from its environment. It’s a metaphor for how we construct our identities, he says, and how he works as a designer. His collection, called “Lament of a Magpie,” includes men’s, women’s and unisex clothing. His goal was to create unique pieces normally made for just men or just women, including tunics and skirts, and give them an androgynous vibe.

Personal style: I’m really dark and macabre. I love black, skulls, snakes—the whole shebang. But it’s really catchy too. I really like Lisa Frank unicorns. I have no glitter shame. Toughest challenge in creating this collection: I have a lot of different patterns, and I’m working in knitwear with wovens, so I’m really trying to bridge that gap between the knit world and the woven world and make it a happy marriage. I really wanted it to be harmonious and speak as one story. Celebrity he’d like to see in his designs: It would have to be Mary-Kate Olsen. She’s my ultimate muse.

n crafting her collection of children’s clothing, Ward proudly worked on the sewing machine her grandmother gave her. “It’s just a very personal collection,” she says. Personal too, in that it’s inspired by her infant daughter, Flora, born last November. Her grandmother gave her the machine so she could work at home with her new baby girl. Ward became fascinated with flowers throughout her pregnancy, so she went around picking petals in her neighborhood to create her own print for the collection, which she hopes embodies perseverance, happiness and fun. Personal style: It’s pretty quirky. I like to mix prints on myself as well. I love polka dots and mod silhouettes and color. I like to have fun. I go to the thrift store a lot. Toughest challenge in creating this collection: I think it was creating my print. I wasn’t well versed in Photoshop, so I had to hone my skills to create the print. Celebrity (child) she’d like to see in her designs: Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter Apple. Post-graduation plans: I’ve had a couple of interviews in Columbus, and I’m hoping to work at a corporate company here. My 5-to-10-year plan is to have a higher-end children’s boutique.

Mia Stone in the leather studio of her Upper Arlington home

Mia stone wandered into a leather store and left with a life-changing passion Story by KrISTY ECKErT Photos by wILL ShILLINg

M

ia Stone waS shopping in New York’s East Village when she peeked through the barladen windows of a dusty leather boutique. Intrigued, she and her sister walked into the store, ogled the giant basket of sandals, strapped belts around their waists and tried cuffs on their wrists. “It smelled good,” Stone said. “And it was just real and living, and I was in love.” She was also “in shock” that the Bible-like sandals cost $500. But they beckoned her back. A month later, she paid the shop’s stern, elderly owner, Barbara Shaum, to make her a custom pair. Shaum—a leather-making legend—traced Stone’s feet and told her to return in two weeks. Six fittings later, the duo had become friendly. “The experience,” Stone said, “was more important than the money.” At the time Stone—who had been an art student, flight attendant and Midwife—was navigating an unhappy marriage to a man in New York. She split her time between him there and her daughter in Upper Arlington. She begged Shaum to teach her the craft, to no avail. So one day, she returned to Upper Arlington, pulled out a paper grocery bag and string, and crafted a makeshift pair of sandals. She then walked into Tandy Leather Factory in Columbus. “I want to learn to make sandals,” she told manager Scott Curtis, who has been making leather goods for more than 40

years. He laughed. “Just sell me everything I need,” she said. A week later, she returned with her pair. Curtis was—and continues to be— impressed. “In this business, you see a lot of people who walk in, and they have an idea that they are going to do something. And some of them are blessed and have a little bit of money, and they come in and buy everything, instead of listening to a little advice, which is, ‘Slow down,’ ” Curtis said. “And I figured the first time that Mia walked in, that that’s where she was—a little too overeager.” But she started visiting regularly and seeking advice from Curtis. She also studied with a podiatrist in Columbus and a cobbler in Connecticut. “She’s good,” Curtis said. “She doesn’t follow boring old styles…. She’s just really developed something unique and interesting.” She began making other leather goods, too—totes, clutches, guitar straps, belts. Solebird was born. Stone—now 48, divorced and happily living in Upper Arlington with her new life partner and his son—sells her goods at various boutiques around Columbus, including Ladybird, Bungalow, Brigade and Bohindi. She was recently commissioned to repair the leather door of a classic Ferrari, which makes her laugh. But this art is, to her, serious business. “It gives me purpose,” she said, tears welling. “And that purpose is just that I like to share love with other people.” She’ll sometimes walk into her home studio at 7 a.m. with a cup of coffee, and emerge to surprisingly discover it’s 3:30 p.m. “I work with like, mania—and a lot of passion,” she said. “It’s who I am. It’s how I breathe.” Shaum apparently approves. One day, Stone sauntered into Shaum’s East Village shop wearing her own shoes. “Where did you get those sandals?” Shaum huffed. Stone slid them off and handed them to Shaum. “I want to thank you for giving me the love for leather craft,” Stone said. Shaum inspected the sandals. She criticized a few bits. Then she handed them back. “These,” she said, “are good.” Solebird: miamia23@sbcglobal.net; 614-599-1104

bag lady Story by Taylor STarek

L

et’s caLL her the bag lady—but not in a frumpy sense. In fact, rebecca Minkoff is anything but, and her namesake line, which features trendy clothing and accessories, has become one of fashion’s most recognizable brands. The 33-yearold designer, who’s married to actor and director Gavin Bellour, has one son, luca, and is poised to welcome a daughter. (They have chosen a name they are keeping to themselves for now.) But that didn’t stop her from recently visiting Saks Fifth avenue at Polaris to promote her new Perry tote. We talked handbags, celebs and what she loves to cook.

 The Morning After Bag was your first handbag. What gave that one its staying power? I think at the time, there were designer handbags that were completely unaffordable, and it hit at a time when it was a great price point and people were kind of shying away from logo bags and “it bags.” They wanted something that was cool but timeless, and in designing it, that was what I was trying to achieve. Where do you find inspiration when you design? I look all over. I look at artists, photographers. I look at museums. I kind of like to know that I never know where I’m going to get it. I don’t have a set method. It’s kind of like something strikes my fancy, and I’ll do a ton of research about it, and that’ll be that. What three things are always in your purse? I’m pretty much an interior minimalist, so a ChapStick of some sort, my iPhone and my wallet. 78 Capital-Style.Com • may/June 2014

Which celebrity do you most love seeing in your designs? Gisele [Bündchen] has been spotted in my designs twice recently—once in our Becky jacket and once with a Morning After Bag. That’s been really exciting, because to me, she’s an incredible role model. She’s a mother; she’s perfect. So to have her kind of embrace the brand has been really exciting. Which spring/summer 2014 trends are you loving? I love this whole influence of sportswear or athleticism in American sportswear, whether it be mesh or a lot of sheer mixed with a solid. I like that trend a lot. And if I could wear a crop top, I would like that trend, but I can’t. Pregnant or not pregnant, crop tops are not in my future. When you’re not traveling, I hear you like to cook. What’s your favorite meal to make at home? That’s tough. I always love making a really great salad. I always make a fresh salad dressing and put a lot of things in it so it could be a meal. I just cooked some spaghetti Bolognese with quinoa pasta and fresh mozzarella. That’s one of my usual meals. I make a chicken broth from scratch, like from the bones. I usually do a hearty chicken soup, especially since it’s been an endless winter. I cook chili. My husband and I realized I’ve just been cooking those three things.

driAn PhilliP howArd couldn’t have known the sequence of events that was about to play out when a trio of American women walked into his London department store. Long story short, one of those women—Cherie Lucks of Bexley—is co-chairing this year’s Hat Day luncheon at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. And she was so enamored with Howard that he will be the event’s keynote speaker.  What prompted you to start making hats? I started just creating things for a friend. I had a shop (in Germany), and I had time on my hands. Then somebody put one of my hats on, and I thought she looked beautiful in it. And she thought she looked beautiful in it.  You then returned to England to study millinery and learned from one of the world’s most famed hat makers, yes? I did an apprenticeship with the man who is the milliner to Her Majesty the Queen: Philip Somerville.  How long did you work with him? For four and a half years, until he retired. I had done an apprenticeship with him, and then he kept me on.

 Any favorites you made for the Queen? Not particularly. The hats are very similar, because the Queen has to wear a certain type of hat so the photographers can see her.

 Did you make anything for the Queen? We all worked on the Queen’s hats. For me to say I actually made a hat for her would be wrong; I would do elements of her hats. And I had the wonderful job of dropping them off to the palace.

 You sell your hats exclusively at Fortnum & Mason, an upscale department store where you are the in-house milliner. Tell us about it. It opened in 1707, so it’s the oldest department store in London. It’s four floors, and it’s in the center of London, on Piccadilly.  That gig must have been quite a coup. Prior to me, the last in-house milliner was in 1956. I’m the first one since then, so it’s quite an honor.  What’s your signature look? I’d say classic with a twist. I love hats from the 20s to the 50s. And I like sort of reinventing them—giving them my own little quirk, if you’d like.  Any notables you have made hats for? I don’t normally say names of my customers, just to protect their courtesy. I make hats for all sorts of people, from the aristocracy to young girls going out for a hen’s night.  How many hats do English women own? That’s a tricky one. It depends on her social life, really. If she attends racing for the season, then she’d have quite a lot of hats, because most ladies don’t want to be seen in the same hat twice. Depending on budget, some ladies will re-trim hats. I have customers who will buy a different hat for each day of Ascot [a horse racing event that lasts five days]. But American ladies love trying them on. And buying them. We’re selling more and more hats to American ladies now.  How many does your best customer have? I have one lady who has an awful lot of my hats. I met her husband last year, and he said, “You’re not my favorite person.” And I said, “Why’s that?” He said, “I’ve had to move all of my golf clubs and all of my golf stuff out of my room to make room for your hats.”  How many hats do you make in a year? A hat can take me anything up to two weeks to make, depending on the detail. I would say anything from 100 to 200 hats a year.  How much do they cost? Anything from 200 pounds to 2,000 pounds. (About $330 to $3,330.)  How did you feel about being invited here? Absolutely thrilled. I’ve never stepped foot outside of New York, and I go to New York quite a lot. So to be invited to come was a real thrill.

Howard is creating10 to 12 hats for “The Columbus Collection,” which will be on sale at Hat Day.

 On why she chose to go mobile i started doing some innocent research on retail spaces, but they were very expensive. i saw an article in a magazine about fashion trucks out west in California, and i hadn’t seen that concept before. i thought that was really cool, and i kept thinking this was something i could actually do financially and still be able to keep my job if i wanted to.  On the first time she drove the truck i basically had a nervous breakdown. it was a nice day, thank goodness. i remember driving down the road, and it was just like the first time you’ve ever driven anything. my knuckles had to have been white. i got on the highway, and i was like, “oh my gosh. how

And when i got there, i was so relieved and so happy. And then i had to drive it back the next day…  On what she’s bringing in this season i’m so excited. Some of the trends i will be featuring are florals, lace, maxis, crop tops, rompers, printed leggings and pants. i currently carry a local jewelry designer and am always looking to add more.  On the future of mobile retail i want to continue to strive to be the best, even if i’m the only one exactly like this right now.

Her story Katie spends her days with the boys—both at home and at work. As president of Buckeye House Painting, Katie is a rare female in the industry and wears many hats. “I am the office person, I do some quotes and color consultations, and I’m in charge of each job,” Katie says. “I work with painters and contractors, so I don’t have to dress up much for work.” And when she’s not working her 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. days, Katie is enjoying her husband and two sons. Since that doesn’t leave much time for herself, she used the makeover process as a way to learn some tips and tricks to make the most of her daily routine. “One thing I learned was not to wash my hair every day and use dry shampoo,” Katie says. “I’m going to try that one!”

Abby Bowman loved the idea of tanning, but her skin did not. Then, after a positive experience with airbrush tanning at a friend’s wedding several years ago, she purchased her own airbrush machine and started spraying on tans for herself, family and friends. Now, she’s taking her show on the road—and officially. “I always wanted my own business,” says Bowman, 31, who has a degree in child development and is a former nanny. “I took the plunge and dove in headfirst.” Bliss Tans was born in July 2013. It’s a mobile service where Bowman travels to homes to spray on a tan that lasts five to 10 days. (It takes 30 minutes and starts at $40.) “We go above and beyond,” Bowman says. “It’s affordable and convenient, and everyone can do it.” Bliss Tans: BlissTans.com

hey were Tiny and fine, yes, but there nonetheless—my first wrinkles. I’ve long anticipated this moment—the one when you realize that, no matter how much water you drink or grease you avoid or happiness you have, you’re no longer in your 20s. And I never thought it’d bother me. But it did. Big girls, however, don’t cry. They call Tim. Tim Maurer, owner of Short North boutique spa Mukha, swears by The Youth Peel. It’s a wee bit of hell, he says, for 10 years off your face. And I wanted it. But he insisted on a consultation first. After gently cleaning my face and giving it a lengthy steam, the brutally honest skin expert hovered over me with what he lovingly calls The Light of Truth, inspecting my every pore. “You don’t need The Youth Peel,” he said. (Yes, I got what amounts to a skin compliment from Tim. Cue my happy dance.) But he did, of course, point out the very wrinkles I noticed, along with a few other flaws. Then, he told me I needed a lower-level acid peel made for skin as sensitive as mine. This is why Tim’s clients remain loyal: because he doesn’t give you what you want, he gives you what you need, regardless of how much money he can make (or lose). “I’m going to ask you what bothers you about your face, and then I’m going to tell you what should bother you,” he jokes. But facials, he says, are serious business— especially when you’re using physician-grade products (as does Mukha, which has a licensed medical director). Sure, Mukha performs nurturing facials (think yummy-smelling, feel-good pampering). But the results-driven variety are their specialty. And that’s what I sought. Tim gave me a mandelic acid peel ($90), which is far less intense (and less expensive) than The Youth Peel. He used a small, disposable, toothbrush-like brush to apply what felt like a thin layer of gel to my face,

throat and upper chest. Next, he wiped on a toner that burned for a minute or so. He asked me to stay out of water until the next day and warned that I might flake or peel over the next week. I had an acid peel earlier in life that was so traumatic I had to call off work because it looked like I was in a house fire. So I was delighted that this time around, even though there was a definite sheen to my skin, I was able to go out that same night with my sister (who swore she didn’t notice it). My skin flaked very—very—minimally over the next week. My only mistake was picking at a miniscule blemish that the acid had turned into a pebble-like spot on my cheek. (For the record, when Tim tells you that you are forbidden from picking, listen.) But by week’s end, that spot aside, my face looked spectacular. The wrinkles didn’t vanish, of course. But they softened. And a couple areas that seemed to have had light red splotching smoothed out. I’ve only had a handful of facials in my life—none that wowed me enough to return. This one, however, is the exception. Mukha: 980 N. High St., Short North; MukhaSpa.com; 614-294-7546

The ciTy’s besT facial Why Mukha does it right

You don’t decide what you need—they do. “It should be a discussion about what should happen, not what the client thinks should happen,” says owner tim maurer. They carry physician-grade products. “We are able to do more intense, results-driven peels.” They want it to last more than an hour. “We specialize in results-driven facials.”

hey lived in The suburbs, but Robin and Roger Smith longed to be in the city. So when their youngest children graduated from Columbus Academy in 2012, the Smiths sold their home in Blacklick and began searching for a property Downtown. They quickly fell in love with German Village. “There are a lot of people like us nowadays, I think, who get rid of the kids and want to live where everything’s convenient,” Roger said. “So I think we’re just kind of following that trend.” He laughed, then joked to his wife: “Or, maybe we’re trendsetters, honey.” The Smiths rented a home in the Village for several months while they house hunted, and saw at least 20 properties before deciding on a brick two-story overlooking Schiller Park. That prime location, along with a big backyard and two-car garage, wowed them. The 3,170-square-foot home had been renovated, converting it from a double unit to a single-family residence. But it needed cosmetic improvements. Robin looked past the white-and-gold striped wallpaper and heavy draperies and saw beauty in the historic architecture and hardwood floors. They walked through the house almost half a dozen times. “Roger just kept saying, ‘I don’t know, Robin. I don’t see it,’ ” Robin said. “I was like, ‘Picture dark gray walls, and get all these window treatments off of there.’ ” Robin, who formerly worked in real estate, channeled her passion for designing and

decorating into the renovation. With help from Grundey Builders, the Smiths put a fresh, sophisticated spin on the interior and spruced up the exterior, too. The couple designed with entertaining in mind: One of their favorite spots is their wine-drinking room off the front entry, where they enjoy

lounging with friends by the fireplace. “Some of the charm of having a 100-year-old home is the separate spaces,” Robin said. “So many houses in the suburbs have big, open rooms, and that’s kind of nice. But I like our cozy little rooms.” During spring and summer, the Smiths

host friends and neighbors around the heated pool in their backyard, which also features a bar and newly-expanded patio area. The home is a highlight on this year’s German Village Haus und Garten Tour. Tour co-chair Marie Logothetis had long admired it from the street while walking her dog through the neighborhood. “Once I got inside, the interior was even more amazing than I imagined it to be,” Logothetis said. Art—a mix of paintings, sculpture and photography—plays a prominent role. “That’s what I loved about their space,” Logothetis said. “It has this monochromatic palette, and then all of a sudden you have these strategic pops of color.” The Smiths share a particular love of local artwork, and they handpicked pieces to set the mood in their new home, which showcases a rich variety of works by wellestablished Columbus artists as well as upand-comers.“To them, it wasn’t just about décor,” said Hayley Deeter, owner of Hayley Gallery in New Albany. “They see something that they love, and then figure out where it’s going, which to me is the purest form of appreciating art.” As the Smiths’ collection has grown, so has their pride in Columbus. “There’s so much talent here locally, I would rather just fill my house with local artwork,” Robin said. “Plus, it’s kind of fun. In the kitchen, we’ve got a cityscape, so I like to have things that remind me of where I live and where I’ve come from. Because, someday, when we retire to Napa as we’re planning, we’ll take all of that with us.” may/June 2014 • Capital-Style.Com

the Wine room

Robin had decorated the Smiths’ previous home in an old-world, Tuscan style. When it sold, the buyers purchased all of the furniture and artwork, giving the Smiths the opportunity to start from scratch. Robin was drawn to a modern aesthetic, having already decorated the couple’s Lake Erie condo to fit the industrial design of the building (a renovated paper factory). “We kind of wanted to surprise people,” Roger said, “because they see the outside, and then once they enter the front door, it’s a completely different feel. Of course, it’s all to Robin’s credit.” The wine room, shown at left, is the first space guests see when they enter. It includes a trio of watercolors by Columbus College of Art & Design graduate Chelstin Ross and a glass sculpture by Mike Wallace purchased from an Art of Recovery auction. “Any time we see art, we are pretty much 100 percent on the same page,” Roger said. The room also includes chairs from Blu Dot, an acrylic table from Plexi-Craft and a chandelier from Horchow.

the Kitchen

Robin’s creative energy spills into the kitchen. Her specialties? Italian and gourmet Mexican. “We entertain family a lot; we love wine,” she said. “So we kind of get together at each other’s houses and turn it into a fun competition to make a nice dinner and pair the wines with it.” The kitchen renovation included removing some cabinets, painting the others black, and installing new appliances and a corner hood (such models are common in Europe, but hard to find in the U.S.). To maximize the dining area space, Robin mixed chairs and a bench around the Bernhardt table. The series of paintings above the table are by Craig Carlisle. (The painting in the middle was the first piece of local art the Smiths bought; Robin then commissioned Carlisle to paint two more.) Other art includes a Lay’s truck photo purchased at an Art of Recovery auction and a Downtown painting by Samantha Bennett. 104 capital-Style.com • may/June 2014

THE ENTERTAINER “Robin does a formal place setting,” Roger said. “She entertains the right way.”

the Dining Room

Artwork inspired the design of the dining room, where many a dinner party is hosted. It’s home to one of Roger’s favorite pieces—a painting he discovered at a Michigan art fair of a 16th century Spanish church from the top looking down. “We hung that, and everything else we did around it,” Robin said. The chandelier is from Capital Lighting. may/June 2014 • Capital-Style.Com

the living Room

Situated at the back of the house, the living room is cozy and casual. The couple found the sectional by BSC At Home— among other furnishings—at High Point Market in North Carolina, one of their favorite destinations. Roger purchased the wrought-iron table at an antique shop in High Point. “It’s a Parisian balcony, and they made it into a coffee table,” he said. “I saw it and I loved it.” The painting above the sofa is by Christopher Brewer of Westerville, an artist married to Robin’s niece. “I asked him to do it,” Robin said. “We saw something very similar to it at a hotel in Cabo, and we both just loved the whimsy.” The black painting is by Mac Worthington. may/June 2014 • Capital-Style.Com

“What we love most about our pool and patio is that it makes us feel like we are on vacation in the middle of the city,” Robin said. Shaded by trees, the backyard is an oasis complete with a built-in bar and grill and private space to lounge on patio furniture by Frontgate.

The second floor gallery, with exposed brick arches, built-in bookcases and skylights, is one of the home’s most unique spaces. “Here’s why we bought the house,” Roger said. “We just thought this was so cool.” (He suspects the structure ended at the wall at one time.)

The historic home includes three bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths. The second story master retreat, shown at right, offers the home’s best view of Schiller Park, which is partly what drew the Smiths to the home. “It was important to me to be around the park,” Robin said. “I just love this area.” Gray walls, white bedding and linen curtains provide a subdued backdrop for the Smiths’ artwork here, from the the black-and-white photographs depicting the Short North to the “Do all things with love” painting by Kirsten Bowen, shown below. Bowen recently moved out of state, but contacted Robin before leaving. “She sent me a message on Facebook and said, ‘I really want to get rid of some of these pieces and not move them,’ ” Robin said. “She brought them all over and we tried things out and she made me a deal.”

the GueSt Bedroom

Robin describes her design style as eclectic. “I think there’s a nice mixture,” she said. “I like everything to be interesting. I don’t like everything to look so staged and perfect.” She played with color in the guest room, shown at left, painting the walls a cheerful yellow and hanging custom curtains made with Jonathan Adler fabric. (Window Dressings by Kathleen Nye created the window treatments shown here and throughout the home.) Robin—who loves bargain hunting—bought the chevron fabric on deep discount through her husband’s Columbus-based textile and fabric distributor, WRS Marketing. “When I started, it was a function business: You put window treatments up and you saw them 20 years later,” Roger said. “It became a fashion business.” He laughed, then added, “The good and the bad about that is, my wife will be bored very quickly with what we’ve just done.” may/June 2014 • Capital-Style.Com

Charm Southern

Story by heather weekley Photos by will Shilling

jENNIFER RoSE

Relish house Home accents and gifts Living in Atlanta, Jennifer Rose grew accustomed to shopping at boutiques with great home accents. But when she moved to Columbus with her husband and two daughters five years ago, she was disappointed there weren’t more shops like those she loved. “I got frustrated that I couldn’t find that here,” says Rose, 42. “I wanted a place to buy a pair of pillows or a mirror or a lamp.” She opened Relish House in October 2012, featuring home décor, jewelry, baby gifts and other giftables. “I researched and I knew a lot of the lines I wanted to carry,” Rose says. “Being from the South has influenced my design style. I like a little bit of everything.” Relish House: 1287 King Ave., Grandview; RelishHouse.com How would you describe the shop’s vibe? it’s a casual, relaxed shopping experience. not all my employees are from the South, but they have that Southern charm. What’s your favorite thing from the shop that you personally own or use? Besides pillows, the second thing is Juliska [tableware]. i love setting a beautiful table. i love to entertain and cook. What locally owned stores do you admire? i’m a huge fashion girl, so i’d say thread. i love the energy, and they have a good pulse on the trends. they do it seamlessly, and they do it well. Powell has a couple great stores. i love the Collection. that’s what i love about Columbus—all the boutiques are different. What are you doing when you’re not here? Spending time with my family. Driving my daughters where they want to go. and i love getting in my car and driving to the South. i do photography, too. i go to atlanta quite a few times a year to do that. 112 capital-style.com • may/June 2014

Single favorite item to eat in the city? The tuna appetizer and grilled tuna with sweet potatoes from Tucci’s. I love Val’s Crowded Herb and Spinach Salad from Third & Hollywood and Northstar’s Sweet Basil Burrito. Ultimate Saturday in Columbus? Sleeping in, then spending time with my family. I love to shop, so I’d go out and about, and go to Powell. I’m a boutique person. And I’d read a book and sit by the fire. I like my home to be cozy, warm and happy. Best business tip you can offer? No matter what business I’ve been in, customer service is everything. If you offer good customer service, you can’t lose. It’s also about investing in good people. What’s the funniest thing a customer has ever said to you? “Where are you from, honey?” since I’m from the South. People know I’m not from here.

Asparagus is one the first vegetables of the growing season and is a fantastic way to welcome back the sun. The veggie combined with fresh tarragon and lemon balance with the richness of the ricotta and puff pastry, and will be one of the first things to disappear from your party spread. • • •

Thaw puff pastry in the fridge. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Trim tough ends from asparagus and blanch in salted water for one minute, then drain and cool in an ice bath to stop the cooking process. In a large bowl, combine ricotta, one egg, lemon juice and zest, tarragon, gruyere, and salt and pepper to taste. Unfold puff pastry on floured work surface, and trim a one-inch border around the dough. Combine remaining egg and Tablespoon of water to create an egg wash. Brush egg wash around the edges and place the trimmed pieces of dough around the perimeter of the tart to create a raised edge. Spread ricotta mixture across the tart and place the blanched asparagus down the middle, alternating stem and tip ends. Brush the crust edges with egg wash and sprinkle a few gruyere shavings over the asparagus. Place on parchment lined baking sheet and bake 15-20 minutes, until pastry is golden brown.

Grilled Citrus shrimp Bright citrus flavors are at the heart of these skewered shellfish. Grill these individual shrimp with the ends of the skewers extending past the edge of the grill. This will prevent the “handles” from burning and make them easier for your guests to keep fingers clean. Serve warm. Ingredients 1 pound shrimp (the bigger the better) 1 cup orange juice 1 Tablespoon orange zest 1 Tablespoon lime juice 6 cloves garlic, minced 2 Tablespoons fresh cilantro, finely chopped 2 Tablespoons ground coriander 1 teaspoon turmeric ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper Directions

• •

Soak bamboo skewers in water for at least an hour to prevent them from burning. Peel and devein the shrimp and combine them in a plastic storage bag with the rest of the ingredients and refrigerate for one to two hours. Grill shrimp over high heat until just turned opaque in the center, being careful not to overcook, about two minutes per side.

s a child, Heather Morris would check the washing machine for loose change, hoping to find enough to buy a cinnamon twist at the local doughnut shop on her way to school. Her love of fried pastry didn’t dissipate at she grew up. In 2012, after culinary school and stints in kitchens from Alana’s to Limited Brands, Morris launched Destination Donuts, a gourmet doughnut line known best for its yeast and cake doughnuts in fun flavor combinations (think red raspberry hibiscus, blackberry sage and lemon thyme). For now, you can find her treats at The Hills Market (daily), North Market (every other weekend) and at a growing number of coffee shops and markets around town. DestinationDonuts.com

 On flavor inspiration I pull inspiration from all over the place. I am constantly reading cookbooks and blogs and food magazines. I’ll pull inspiration from cocktails. I like incorporating savory elements or fresh herbs. I think that that’s an unexpected twist, and it really adds that interesting element.  On her oddest concoction I’m a big fan of Thai food. So I did a Thai peanut one. It’s got ginger and curry. A Thai peanut noodle dish—that’s where I pulled inspiration from. It’s weird and awesome all at the same time.  On her dough I worked on recipes for a year. Some were too dry, some were bland, some were overly sweet. I wanted to make sure you could taste more than just plain sugar. So I scaled back the sugar so you can taste the glazes and the different infusions.  On her daughter My daughter is 8. She’s so proud of me,

Haik 800 N Colu 614.2 www

and it makes me want to work harder. Right now, when she grows up, she says she wants to own a candy shop. She very much has the entrepreneurial spirit.  On Jeni Britton Bauer I really wanted to push the envelope and make interesting flavor combinations. Jeni kind of forged that path of thinking differently about food pairings, and I love that about her. She inspired me. I thought, “Why can’t I do that with doughnuts?”  On a great doughnut Texture, I think, is really important. A lot of doughnuts are super light and airy. I wanted to have some substance to mine. My doughnuts are a little more dense; there’s some chew to them.  On what’s next I am actively looking for a permanent home. Within the next six to eight months, I want to have a shop open. I have learned from this process that you don’t put anything in stone, you just kind of go with the flow.

birthdAy thAt ends with a zero is a good reason to shake things up. So when Ashley Curl turned 30 last May, she took an inventory of her life to date—happy childhood in granville, degree from Capital University, great boyfriend, busy career as a business consultant, fun gig as a local blogger. But she was missing something: A view of the world from outside the box. The plan to shift her perspective began: “i wanted to get away from the daily routines.” Somewhere along the way, though, her plan morphed into something bigger: in her 30th year, she would take 30 trips. “i love traveling,” she explains. She hauls out a sheet of paper on which are written the destinations she’s visited so far: Jamaica, Atlanta, Haiti, Seattle, las Vegas, Mad River Mountain and…Nowheresville, Pa.?

fAves Curl’s personal favorites

“Friends from college,” she explains with a laugh. “it’s somewhere in the middle of nowhere. We probably will be going back for a bridal shower.” Along the way, Curl says she’s learned it’s not so much about racking up the most prestigious destinations. it’s about packing a bag and shaking up the norm. She keeps her 1,200 Facebook followers and 300 email subscribers (to her ColumbusSocialite.com blog) up to date on her adventures (as well as her pet causes, lifeCare Alliance and the Kinder Key auxiliary group at Nationwide Children’s Hospital). And Curl has inspired her parents and their friends to shake things up as well, although their goal puts a few less miles on the odometer: They’re all visiting one new restaurant a month. “it makes you think outside the box,” Curl says. “And why not start now? Don’t wait 20 years or for retirement!”

Favorite reward to yourselF For a job well done? Nothing beats a manicure and pedicure

Favorite birthday present ever? My surprise 30th birthday party. It was a themed party where everyone wore white.

Favorite song to sing in the shower? I actually don’t sing in the shower, but I do prepare for public-speaking engagements.

plan one trip or something new for you to experience once a month. Make a list of new things you want to try this year whether it’s going somewhere new or trying out a new restaurant or workout routine. Once you experience it, cross it off your list and go on to the next one. tell your friends and family what you want to do. They’ll be your support system. take photos or keep a log of what you’ve accomplished so you can continue to stay on track. buy a new passport cover. It will make you want to use it.
