The site is located at the rock cliff along Congwong Bay right next to the signature of La Perouse - the Bare Island. The La Perouse area has been developed into a coastal recreation at site with human facilities in a fast growing urban space within Sydney’s eastern suburbs. Besides, the site consists of a rich history of La Perouse and Sydney’s indigenous population which contributes huge significance to the present area. The concept of this project is to provide an adjacent view to the Bare Island while also providing shelter and access to the public with gathering spots and facilities. As there are various existing water activities around the site, the project is designed to already build a wider platform to accommodate more users in accessing the natural habitat of the bay. The design is also designed into 2 general layers with 2 major sets of duplicates of glulam timber column systems providing a hierarchy of transitional space opening up towards the ocean.

Brief for a Natural Swimming Centre The Randwick Council has administered a development project through the area to provide a generous platform for users to get engage into the community and the entire natural environment of La Perouse. The construction is limited to lightweight timber structures to avoid creating damage to the local terrain and fragile habitat around the area. It is assumed that part of La Perouse’s Congwong Bay will be enclosed by breakwaters and nets to provide an ocean pool. The design is consisted with 2 decks, with the upper deck linking to the Southern end of Anzac Parade and the lower deck clinging to the sandstone beddings at the bay and attaching to the ocean pool.

CIRCULAR QUAY| HARBOUR MASTERPLAN cultural journey
Problems occurring in Circular Quay lead to problems in spatial integration of site. Majority of the existing buildings block views and sceneries upon Opera House and the harbour. The train station and ferry wharfs appear to be a blockage of human flow from the city area to the ocean. The current cruise port blocks the linkage between the West of the harbour and Dawes Point Park, where the potential circulation route is severely disconnected with the general harbour sides, making the area inactive. The lack of access points also unwillingly directs the current circulation onto the Rocks area. Cultural linkage of the whole site area across the harbour is dismissed due to the temporary obstacles. With the purpose of providing a solution to the issue, a large scale of masterplanning is taken place with the approach of stacking layers over the existing platform to refurbish the lost cultural ribbon.

SYDNEY heritage revitalisation | OVERSEAS PASSENGER TERMINAL
HERITAGE +VERTICAL LAYERING
Following the harbour side masterplanning strategy proposed as above, the Overseas Passenger Terminal (OPT) is redesigned at the same time to match the concept of the masterplanning scheme. In order to refurbish the vibrance of Circular Quay along the Western coastal edge, the historical significance of the existing heritage in colonial years and OPT is taken into account of the new design. With the approach of vertical layering in prevention to block human flow from the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) to Cambell’s Cove, the whole design is divided into different layers of platform to cater for the need of various types of public domain.

The major approach of the new Overseas Passenger Terminal is to take advantage of the existing warehouse buildings on site in replacement of the current OPT building. All arrival and departure procedures are reallocated to the heritage buildings. The purpose of this approach is to revitalize the currently less activated region of the site, meanwhile unblocking the harbour side with light weight steel structured deck for arrival. The new OPT integrates with the surrounding restaurants and galleries in providing commercial and cultural opportunities to public pedestrians. A giant platform is hovered above transport facilities and supports a more continual circulation experience from MCA to Campbell Cove.

The following set of line drawings was being done during leisure time in Sydney 2014, where these drawings try to capture the spatialisation of architecture in different part of Sydney. Limiting of using free hand to draw, it is challenging in handling every line to draw. Critical thinking skill is required in order to capture the atmosphere of the view. This recalls for immediate abstraction of site character and natural elements to build contrast to the built environment. The drawings are done within Sydney region, which include residential suburban areas, city areas, and the harbour side of Circular Quay.

WORKSHOP campus furniture
This furniture project aims to explore materiality through the fabrication process of a design piece. The concept is to design a set of coffee table capable to facilitate discussion among users in a lounge area while providing shelves to store books and accessories. Coffee tables are one basic entities that provide comfort in enjoying an interior environment. A multifunctional coffee table brings easy communication while allowing users to spend their time at a place from short time to a day, chit-chatting or browsing through magazines. This helps facilitate discussion within a school environment. This production of furniture enables opportunities to give detailed consideration to material applications, dimensions and sizing, joineries, and also technical issues while furnishing materials into a decent piece of design product. The final product is a coffee table. The exploration of production has gone through consideration of materiality, cutting and fitting procedures and finally application on finishes.

Opportunities for Lai Chi Kok The international school is located at a corner site of 2 major highways in Kowloon linking to the North Eastern districts of Kowloon Peninsula. The site is located 10 minutes away from MTR station and it is highly accessible to all other districts of Kowloon. However the irregular shape of site limits the form of the building. With the site limitation of facing the highways and the mountain of Butterfly Valley, the architects face the challenge to balance noise and air pollution in treating the design for essential schooling environment.
