Vegetable Requiem for percussion trio (2012/2017)

Brian Ciach Vegetable Requiem (2012, rev. 2017) A five-minute mini requiem for percussion trio performing on vegetable ocarinas. I. Flammis acribus addictis (Sentenced to acrid flames) (Fantasy) II. Dies irae, dies illa (Judgement day) (Hocket) III. Osanna in excelsis (Hosanna in the highest) (Chorale) IV. Lacrimosa (Tearful day) (Canon) V. Et lux perpetua luceat eis (And let perpetual light shine upon them) (Fantasy)

PROGRAM NOTES: This piece is a commissioned work by the percussion trio, Square Peg, Round Hole, written in 2012 and revised in 2017. I wrote three diverse movements for found instruments at their request. For the middle movement, I was inspired to write a five-minute requiem, a genre usually reserved for serious music, set to the unusual and comical instrumentation of vegetable ocarinas. The five one-minute, onepage pieces unfold as miniature requiem haikus—brief images of the requiem mass text. This requiem is meant to act as a discrete piece.

PERFORMANCE NOTES: Percussionist 1 performs: Large Sweet Potato 1 Large Sweet Potato 2 A-flat Carrot D Carrot Percussionist 2 performs: E-flat Carrot D Carrot Percussionist 3 performs: Large Horseradish A-flat Carrot D Carrot Daikon Radish To make the vegetable ocarinas, you will need the following materials: • an electric drill • a drill bit set for drilling into the vegetables, length-wise, and for hand-drilling the finger holes: especially two large drill bits (1/2”, 1” or appropriate size) for the large length-wise holes and two small drill bits (7/64”, 5/32” or appropriate size) for the finger holes • a pipe of the same diameter as the large drill bit with one edge sharpened by a flat file • a flat file • an Exacto knife • a small chisel (optional, though effective) • a ruler (optional, though effective) • some type of storage container filled with water (for vegetable ocarina storage) The YouTube link below can illustrate how these instruments are made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsboQ7cp7a4 Here is my video demonstration of the various ocarinas called for in the Requiem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_wI-jHLNGg&t=28s
