Aspirin for Dogs Should we give our dogs aspirin if they are suffering and in pain? Well unless it is on the recommendation of a vet, then no you definitely should not. Whilst it seems like a good idea if you know your dog is in pain to give him something immediately to help him feel more comfortable, aspirin can cause problems later on. Some medicines that we may use are similar in many ways to medicine that has been produced specifically for dogs but there are always subtle differences because we are different.
Aspirin for dogs – Don’t self diagnose Over the years we have become accustomed to diagnosing ourselves for lots of day to day ailments and aspirin has proved to be particularly good for all the minor aches and pains of everyday life. I am sure though on occasions you will have suffered a stomach upset by using aspirin, so please don’t self diagnose your pet, leave it to the professionals. Dogs as you may know have a very sensitive and easily upset digestive system which is one very good reason why aspirin for dogs is not a good idea.
Puppies in particular have very sensitive tummies and aspirin should never be used under any circumstances. You may find if your dog is suffering with arthritis, (which is degenerative joint disease that attacks the cartilage which cushions the joints) and is in a lot of pain that your vet will in fact prescribe aspirin as a short term fix for your dog as it will reduce any swelling and relieve the pain. In my opinion before using aspirin even for a short period, a blood test as part of an examination prior to taking aspirin should be organized so that your dog’s health can be monitored as there are many side effects associated with dog’s using aspirin.
A few reasons why aspirin for dogs is not really a good idea; Short term use may cause gastrointestinal problems resulting in vomiting, loss of appetite and diarrhea. Long term use may cause serious problems like kidney or liver damage. Aspirin if given to dogs without food may cause stomach ulcers. This is a long term risk even when given with food.
Aspirin should never be given to puppies as they lack the necessary enzymes needed to breakdown the aspirin and can result in serious organ damage. Aspirin is also not recommended for dogs that are pregnant as it may cause birth defects. Also if your dog suffers from any bleeding or clotting disorder, aspirin which is sometimes recommended to help thin the blood of some human patients will only make the problem worse. There is a recommended dosage for aspirin as far as your dog is concerned and it is based on your dog’s weight but I won’t give that dosage here as it really is important that you seek veterinary advice before giving aspirin to dogs. Aspirin for dogs then is a definite NO as far as I am concerned as I don’t like the thought of any of those side effects. One of my dogs has a hip problem and was limping all the time so I took him to my vet who recommended acupuncture. I found that acupuncture worked extremely well for him and after several weeks of treatment, he now only goes when needed for a 10 minute session about every eight weeks or so. If you have a problem with your dog there may be a similar solution for you without using aspirin.
