very year kids and teens look forward to summer vacation. The time away from school is a welcome break in routine and a time to socialize and bond with friends. But for one group of teens the beginning of summer vacation marks the end of an era – the grads. For the senior class the last day of school before summer vacation is the last day of school ever and this means some pretty big changes. Gone are the days when friendships were packaged and presented in the easy to navigate format of the school hallways now maintaining friendships, even the best of friendships, is going to take time and effort. Why? Because the captive audience is gone and everybody is going in different directions; some people are off to college or university, some are out to travel and experience the world, and others are going to dive right in to the workforce. Whatever the path your friends are choosing after graduation chances are very good that you won’t all walk the same one. So how do you maintain the bonds of friendship when you leave the small world called high school and enter the big world known as the rest of your life? It’s not easy and you will lose a few people along the way but there are some things
you can do to keep your friendships alive in spite of the exciting changes you are about to experience. Stay in touch. This is the first and most important thing you must do in order to maintain your high school friendships. More... Prioritize your friendships. When you move beyond the corridors of your high school you can count on a few very exciting changes in your social world, you will form new kinds of relationships with others and what you come to see as your peer group will expand and evolve. More... Blend the old with the new. When you move out in to the world and form new bonds with new people it can feel like loving in two bizarre parallel universes, each starring you on the same stage but neither one fitting with the other. Friendships are complicated but important parts of everybody’s life but good friendships are worth the effort it takes to maintain them. Don’t become discouraged when once easy

kay, you're somewhere between having your own neighborhood lemonade stand and working at a real job, so what should a young teen do? Many states have laws that limit when teens can get a job and how long they are allowed to work per week, so how are you expected to make the money you need for clothes, dates, cars, etc.? The answer: Go into business for yourself! Before going into a list of ideas for your new business venture, let's go over a few rules you need to follow to ensure some level of success: 1. You must be able to promote the business to potential customers and clients -- thus, you need to be able to talk with people and be able to try to sell them something. Without customers, of course, you do not have a business. 2. You must be able to make a profit with your business. Sounds kind of obvious, right? But it is sometimes harder than you might imagine. You need to be able to set prices -- and stick to them (and be able to collect them) -- above your costs. 3. You must know one of the most important rules of marketing (and one I force my students to chant) -- you have to satisfy the customer! You must do a good job
in your business or you are going to lose customers. Also, the better you are at satisfying customers, the more likely that they are going to recommend others to you -- so you can actually increase your customer base just by doing a good job. 4. You must avoid serious errors -- in actions of judgment -- in running your business. If you do something wrong, regardless of whose fault, it can cause anger, disappointment, bad publicity, and at the ultimate -- a lawsuit. You are running a business, so make sure an adult family member knows exactly what you are doing in your business, and if anything bad should ever happen, make sure you face it immediately and deal with it. 5. You must be prepared to work long hours at establishing the business -- and then even more hours running the business. They call it work for a reason -- you need to be truly dedicated and determined to establish your own business. Okay, so those are the rules. They are not meant to scare you off, just to help you do a better job at it. Running a business can be a great experience for you. You can make money, you can gain valuable experience, and you can use the

Escaping Party Awkwardness By Andrew Liang With summer vacation just about to begin, I’m sure you’re pretty excited about all the parties, barbeques, and get-togethers you’ll soon be going to. Instead of the mind-numbing classes and groan-inducing studying you’ve been put through for the past nine months, it’ll be relaxing with friends, savoring ice cream at Cold Stone (g’luck Thomas!), and cramming in as many hours of movies, video games, and late night conversations that you can manage. Of course, the parties will be the highlight of summer for a lot of us – where else can you catch up with friends, enjoy plenty of food, and generally let out all of that school year stress? But be wary, for there is a dark side to all the fun – party awkwardness. One embarrassing comment, one lame joke, one turtle-worthy moment – and any witty, funny, and enjoyable conversation instantly collapses. So, I now offer my readers a few ways to avoid what could otherwise ruin a great party. 1. The Classic: I’ll begin with a method we’re all familiar with, and one I’m sure most of us have used at some point. This strategy is simple, usable with no practice, and rarely ever fails. When the awkwardness strikes, just find an excuse to leave. Any escape route works: you need to use the bathroom, that bowl of chips just started looking real tasty, you absolutely can’t miss this call. It’s

both your all-purpose tool and your last second panic button. The only real danger with the Classic is ending up looking like the loner if you stand back for too long. 2. The Brick Wall: I’m a big fan of this particular tactic. For some, myself included, the Brick Wall is even more convenient than the Classic for preserving a pleasant atmosphere. Say some yahoo decides to spit out an awkward remark. In response, simply raise both eyebrows approximately two centimeters on your face. For those who like a little flair, cock a single eyebrow upward, creating a diagonal across the face. Both forms should be accompanied by utter and unbroken silence. By giving your opponent absolutely no room to maneuver, you send a powerful hint and look stylish doing it. 3. The Kamikaze: Requiring the ultimate sacrifice from a noble partygoer, this approach quarantines the awkward person and saves the conversation, at the steep price of a friend’s time. When the awkward happens, the sacrificial lamb will step in to direct the bungler’s attention elsewhere. Unfortunately, this usually involves sending off your friend to a temporary conversational hell. Only for the altruistic or highly skilled (who might be able to escape and return). 4. The Atom Bomb: Just like the name sounds, the Atom Bomb involves doing something so outrageous, so ridiculous, so over the top that all awkwardness is cleansed, incinerated, or obliterated. It’s like throwing a log into an industrial wood chipper. Better yet, it’s like tossing a planet into a black hole. Everything, including any enjoyable conversation,

Maybe you hate doing your chores at home, but getting paid for doing them is completely different! You could offer complete housecleaning services, or specialize in one or more areas, such as attic/basement/garage cleanups. A yard maintenance service. There is always something that needs to be done…mowing lawns and weed control in the spring and summer, raking leaves in the fall, and shoveling snow and planting for the spring in the winter. A car-detailing business. With so many people working multiple jobs and having such busy lifestyles, very few people have the time to really take care of their cars -- and you could offer a weekly or monthly service of washing, waxing, vacuuming, etc. A pet sitting service. Typically more of a summer business when people tend to go on vacation, but you might be able to have a yearround business by offering pet walking, bathing, cleaning, etc. services. A painting service. If you have some experience -- or there is a few of your friends that want to go in business with you -- you

Summer Fun: In Case You Run Out of Ideas…

Continued from page 1 Step 1 Try to contact your roommate ahead of time to find out what he or she plans to bring. Step 2 Make sure you are not duplicating large items such as televisions, stereos or telephones. Step 3 Find out what size bed your dorm room has and pack linens accordingly. Step 4 Determine how likely it is that you will need dressy, formal or "date" clothes. For instance, if you are planning to join a sorority or fraternity, you will probably need more formal clothes than if you're not. Step 5 Bring mostly casual wear for studying. Try to select clothes that can all be washed in the same cycle if you want to make laundry easier. Step 6 Pack a bathrobe, shower slippers, towels, and personal care items such as your hair dryer. Step 7 Toss in some school supplies, but remember that you can buy those on campus. Step 8 Pack your computer equipment securely in the boxes it came in, and be sure to bring a good power strip. Step 9 Take posters and tapestries for wall coverings. Take personal photos and mementos to dress up shelves and desks, and to remind you of home. Step 10 Bring throw rugs or used carpet as floor coverings. Step 11 Pack emergency items such as batteryoperated radios and flashlights, as well as practical items such as a hot pot, mini refrigerator or microwave, if such things are allowed.

By Eric Liang Not knowing what to do during the summer seems almost illogical on the surface, the same way one might think it strange that someone doesn’t know what to eat at a familiar food court. But it’s not that big of a stretch: when it comes down to it, in both situations, the issue is not lack but rather excess. Year after year, as I attempt to make summer plans, the first thought in my mind is of where to start. A transcript of my typical thought process at such times would be similar to the following: “The beach sounds good, haven’t been there in a while…then again I haven’t really gone to Six Flags before either…but both those places would be too hot and I wouldn’t enjoy it and that would defeat the purpose…maybe I should call some friends…never mind my phone’s across the room…alright back to sleep.” Not exactly a recipe for success. Needless to say, I have a reputation for not doing much during my three months of bliss unless someone else plans it. I’m convinced that’s why guys have gal friends: they know how to plan things. Enough of that. This being my last summer as a high school student, and quite possibly as a Californian, I’ve taken it upon myself to come up with a list of things to do during the summer. Blessed as we are with Californian suns, beaches, and youth culture, I have a feeling that if I were to stay in
Chicago this time next year, I’d regret quite a bit. So here we go… 1. Go to the beach: Simple enough. I happen to love body boarding— or, for you more casual types, boogie boarding. Make sure you have friends, a lot of drinks, and food that doesn’t pick up sand easily (I know, it’s a narrow spectrum). But just lying in the sun would be awesome, too. Bring sunscreen, though—as a former student rep to the district’s legislative/ policy committee, I’m supposed to remind you all of the dangers of UV ray exposure. So remember, rub it on. Generously. 2. Movies(!): I have only one thing to say about this point, and that is “The Dark Knight”. I can think of no better way to end a summer movie season that began with Iron Man and that included such anticipated releases as The Incredible Hulk, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Kung-Fu Panda, and the one film I’m highly skepticalyet-hopeful of, You Don’t Mess With the Zohan. Oh yeah, I’m supposed to mention Wall-E, the one movie I’m skeptical of and still don’t care about. 3. Eat a lot: Ironic, since I planned to be thin and fit before heading off to college. Northwestern is supposedly the fifth fittest college in America, so I figure I better work out over the summer. But eating is so much more fun, especially if you combine it with #2 and #4. 4. Be with friends: It would be sad to say that you get enough of them during the school year. Use the sum-
mer to do things with your friends you didn’t have the time for while tests and homework were piling up. I went to Cabazon with a particularly closeknit project group of mine in May. I like to think it’s a teaser for what’s to come. Plus, I’m quite adamant about this point, since I’ll be in Illinois in September and won’t be seeing my best friends for at least three months. 5. Get fit: I changed my mind—I now consider it possible to work out and have fun at the same time. I recommend running with music. iPod’s are lovely, aren’t they? 6. Throw a party for no particular reason: I hope the title says it all. But remember the second part of this suggestion. Don’t have a reason for it, just do it. Then again, I’m sure this would seem a lot more appealing if I actually did it. Remember, guys don’t do planning. It’s not in our genes, the same way sowing and flower arranging isn’t. 7. Start a summer romance: For no other reason than the fact that I’m a sucker for rom-coms. That’s short for “romantic comedies”, if you’re among the uninitiated. And who knows: it might not end with the summer. So there you have it, my humble list of summer to-do’s. Remember, you only have about three months before all this becomes naturally and academically impossible. So choose wisely and have the time of your life.
