Gahr Senior Rescues Drowning Infant at Cerritos County Park
I
By Jerry Bernstein
Gahr High School Senior Daniel Mayoral proved he was a true Gladiator with his rescue of an infant whose stroller had fallen into the lake at Cerritos County Park.
Civil War Veteran Receives Headstone for Unmarked Grave in Artesia Cemetery
Dedication Service: Conducting the Headstone Dedication Service was Gen. W.S. Rosecerans Auxiliary No. 2, Auxiliary to Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. By Randy Economy It was an incredible memorial service for someone no one really knew. Approximately 100 hundred community members gathered at the Artesia
Cemetery April 9 to pay respect to a real American Civil War Hero who has been "resting" in the same cemetery plot for more than 100 years. Those present included Cerritos Mayor Carol Chen, Councilmember Bruce Barrows, Mayor Pro Tem Jim Edwards, Artesia Mayor
Victor Manalo an Mayor Pro Tem John Lyons who presented city proclamations to the family. Supervisor Don Knabe's office was represented by Stephanie Stone, USN (ret.) Chair, Los Angeles County Veteran's Advisory Commission, who presented a Los Angeles County proclamation to the family of Cpl. Miller. Also part of the program was Bill Ward, Commander of the Lakewood VFW and a member of the Artesia Historical Society. He presented a portion of the VFW burial ritual. Welcoming those attending was Artesia Cemetery District Trustee Barbara Applebury. Until recently, no one actually knew his true identity. But after much detective work, the mystery of who was in the "unmarked" grave for more than a century has been solved. On Apr. 9 Corporal John W. Miller,
The Artesia City Council at its April 11 meeting approved an interim ordinance extension prohibiting the expansion of existing restaurants or the development of new restaurants in the Old Town Area that do not provide on-site parking spaces. On Mar. 14 the council adopted an Interim Urgency Ordinance that imposed a moratorium that expires at the end of April. The new interim ordinance is for 10 months and 15 days. who was born in 1831, and who died in 1909 finally was given his gravestone in an emotional ceremony in the historical Artesia Cemetery on Artesia Boulevard in Cerritos. Miller was a "Unionist." He stood about 5'6”, and had a light complexion, auburn hair and piercing blue eyes. He was a Protestant and he was well educated, meaning he could write and read well during those times. Miller was born to Miles and Rebecca Miller on Oct. 24, 1831 in Ohio. Miller jumped around in the mid west living in Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa before moving to California in around 1870 where he eventually settled in the NorwalkDowney-Artesia area. Cerritos was not around in those days, other than dairy and farmland. [See CIVIL WAR Page 8]

PATSY LOST
t was beautiful hot day when Gahr High School Senior Daniel Mayoral decided to go fishing at Cerritos County Park. "The fishing is always pretty good," he says, "and it is also very relaxing". Little did Daniel know what was going to happen next. A mom with a small child was pushing a stroller in Cerritos County Park when she lost control of it. She watched in horror as the stroller rolled seemingly forever finally plunging into the park’s lake. She screamed in terror because her infant was in the stroller. Daniel heard the woman scream that her stroller had gone the lake. Daniel was fishing a few feet away. “At first I thought just the stroller had gone into the water because there was a little boy standing next to her.,” he said, “but then the woman began screaming ‘My baby is in the stroller.’ When he heard that, without any hesitation, he jumped into the water.

Growing Up In Hard Times (Editor’s Note: This part 1 of a 3-part series). By James Kang, ABC School Boardmember I have been blessed in so many ways. I have a wonderful wife and three children who have made me proud. I have lived happily in Cerritos for many years, started a successful real estate business and was elected to the ABC School Board. Life has been good. Yet I can remember two times in my youth when I wasn’t so sure that I would even have a future, let alone a successful one. The recent story about North Korea attacking an island in South Korea reminded me of my past military experience when I was detached as a platoon leader to the demilitarized zone located between North and South Korea. Kim Il Sung, Premier of North Korea, initiated the Korean War in 1950, and because of that more than a half million people would die or are missing. Both countries agreed to a ceasefire in 1953, but borderline conflicts still occur. Most of time the North Korean Army would provoke the South. During my college life, I had a choice of being drafted to military service or taking a ROTC training program. I chose to take military training during my junior and senior years. I was assigned to the guard post in the DMZ as a platoon leader. That was the worst position a military officer could choose. Almost every night I had to lead my soldiers to the ambush cave to confront the North's infiltration, staying over night to watch out if anyone tried to come from
ABC Boardmember James Kang, assigned to the DMZ, spent six horrific months at the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea in the 1960’s. North to South. Was it a lot of fun? Maybe it could be fun if you stayed a day or so. But think about having to do this ambushing duty for six months. You will get crazy. I did it for six months whether it was raining or snowing. It was a real battlefield. The enemy was just in front of us. When I fired at them, they fired back at us. Soldiers died or lost a limb by being shot or by stepping on the claymore mines that were embedded by North or South. You needed to be alert every moment in order to survive. That was a real hell. You needed a good survival strategy; otherwise, your body could end up in a coffin to be buried. One rainy night, when a group of North Korean guerillas, including Kim Sin Jo, invaded the South for the purpose of assassinating South Korea President Park Jung Hee, I was again detached to the ambush

ditch. This time we were to intercept more than 100 soldiers who were withdrawing to the North. It was pitch dark around midnight. I was so sleepy that I was closing my eyes on and off. All of sudden I saw something come my way and disappear. I was surprised. I turned my face to the left and the right. Soldiers were asleep. Then the object rose up and lay down. I was frightened and my heart started pounding. I woke soldiers up by poking their arms without making a noise. Everyone on my row was being alerted and waiting for my order to fire while they pointed M16 rifles to the front. A minute later the object stood up and started walking toward us. I held my breath and waited for the object until it came to the best firing
range. When it came to the point, I ordered fire and all soldiers fired at the same time. The object fell down on the ground. It was still pitch dark. I ordered soldiers to stay still inside the ditches until it became dawn. That night was the longest night in my life. Three hours waiting was like a month. When I could see the frontline, I was accompanied with three brave soldiers who were moving forward to catch the object. I ordered other soldiers to cover our front in case the enemy fired at us. I expected to see one of the guerillas who was shot by fire. Unexpectedly it was a wild tiger. We were all surprised but relieved at the same time. At least there would be no more deaths that day.

Arthritis
What is arthritis? Arthritis and other rheumatic diseases are characterized by pain, swelling, and limited movement in joints and connective tissues in the body. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 47 million people in the US have some form of arthritis or chronic joint symptoms. Arthritis, which literally means inflammation of a joint (where two or more bones meet), actually refers to more than 100 different diseases. Rheumatic diseases include any diseases that cause pain, stiffness, and swelling in joints or other supportive body structures, such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones. Arthritis and other rheumatic diseases are often mistakenly associated with old age, because osteoarthritis (the most common form of arthritis) occurs more often among elderly persons. However, arthritis and Arthritis is usually chronic, which means that it rarely changes, or it progresses slowly. Specific causes for most forms of arthritis are not yet known. What are the most common types of arthritis? The three most prevalent forms of arthritis include the following: • osteoarthritis - the most common

type of arthritis. It is a chronic disease involving the joints, particularly the weight-bearing joints such as the knee, hip, and spine. Osteoarthritis is characterized primarily by the destruction of cartilage and narrowing of the joint space. It can also include bone overgrowth, spur formation, and impaired function. It occurs in most people as they age, but also may occur in young people as a result of injury or overuse. • fibromyalgia - a chronic, widespread pain in muscles and soft tissues surrounding the joints throughout the body. rheumatoid arthritis - an inflammatory disease that involves the lining of the joint (synovium). The inflammation may affect all of the joints. •juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) - a form of arthritis in children ages 16 or younger that causes inflammation and stiffness of joints for more than six weeks. Unlike adult rheumatoid arthritis, which is chronic and lasts a lifetime, children often outgrow juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. However, the disease can affect bone development in the growing child. How is arthritis diagnosed? In addition to a complete medical history and physical examination, diagnostic procedures for arthritis may include

the following: • x-rays or other imaging procedures (to show the extent of damage to the joint) • blood tests and other laboratory tests, including the following: Rehabilitation for arthritis: An arthritis rehabilitation program is designed to meet the needs of the individual patient, depending upon the type and severity of the arthritis. Active involvement of the patient and family is vital to the success of the program. The goal of arthritis rehabilitation is to help the patient return to the highest level of function and independence possible while improving the overall quality of life - physically, emotionally, and socially. The focus of rehabilitation is on relieving pain and increasing motion in the affected joint(s). In order to help reach these goals, arthritis rehabilitation programs may include the following: • exercises and to control joint pain and swelling, exercises to improve mobility (movement) and physical fitness Rehabilitation after joint replacement: The goal of hip and knee replacement surgery is to improve the function of the joint. Optimist Speaker Provides Hope for Families of Children with Disabilities By Jerry Bernstein Speaking before members of the Cerritos Optimist Club Rene Roberts, founder of Inclusions/Infusion that provides services for families of children with disabilities, said, children with disabilities do not have the same quantity or quality of opportunities to play, move and experience life physically and emotionally as their peers. She described Inclusion/Infusion as a support system for children with all types of disabilities and their families. Their staff and network of professionals provide individual and group fitness training, classes like ballet or karate for children who are often excluded because of physical, mental or emotional challenges along with therapeutic and chiropractic care. Hamilton, who has fought Cerebral Palsy since she was a child, said one day while swimming in the gym she began to wonder what life would have been like now if she had exercised like this as a child. She said she had physical therapy after each surgery but that seemed to address what was wrong with her body rather than strengthen what was right with her body. “At that moment I knew I wanted to open a gym for children with disabilities and their families,” she stated. “I knew how good I felt after I exercised my muscles that are normally so tight and stiff.”

COMMUNITY SPORTS - 2010-2011 WINTER ALL-AREA TEAMS SUBURBAN LEAGUE BASEBALL
DeLaRosa lifts Artesia, puts John Glenn in near playoff extinction By Loren Kopff With four of the seven Suburban League schools heading into the second half of their league schedule, the circuit is beginning to divide between the near playoff guarantees and the ones hoping to stay alive. This past Wednesday, Artesia visited John Glenn in a battle of those hoping to stay alive. With both teams sitting at one win in league action, the Pioneers called on senior Osbaldo DeLaRosa to keep the red and black within striking range of league leading Mayfair and second place Bellflower and La Mirada. DeLaRosa went the distance, scattering five hits and striking out six as Artesia posted a 4-1 victory. It was the third win in the past five games for the Pioneers (3-11 overall, 2-3 in the league) in what head coach Michael Gaoghagan termed as an “elimidate’ game. Artesia came in tied with Norwalk for fourth place as the Lancers were hosting Mayfair. “We still have a long, long way to go,” Gaoghagan said. “But we know this week was very important. We pretty much have to go right through [Glenn and Cerritos] to be where we want to be. ” For the second time all season, Artesia scored in the first inning when junior shortstop Cesar Soto tripled to the right field gap. Three pitches later, he came

home on a groundout from senior first baseman Sean Taylor. After that, Glenn sophomore Ceaser Arzate settled down and retired 10 straight at one point. But DeLaRosa was just as stellar, tossing a three-hitter through the first six innings and getting some nifty defensive help in the bottom of the third. With one out and junior left fielder Ronaldo Acuna on third, senior right fielder Juan Rojas hit a grounder to Soto who threw home to senior catcher Jeff Gunter where he was waiting to tag Acuna out. After senior first baseman Andy Aguirre reached on an error, DeLaRosa got 11 of the next 12 batters he faced. “He’s had glimpses where he’s been pretty sharp,” Gaoghagan said. “He went through six good innings and was able to gut it out and get the victory.” The Pioneers put the game away in the fifth with three runs. Junior designated hitter Carlos Ramirez singled and one out later, senior pinch runner Edwin Gallardo scored on a single from senior second baseman Effrain Huizar. Later in the inning, Taylor singled in a pair of runs to give DeLaRosa some breathing room. “They generate more runs because they get runners in scoring position,” said Glenn head coach David Cruz said. “We don’t. We hit into doubles plays, we pop it up and we strike out. That has been our M.O. all season long. “Our third baseman and shortstop had some miscommunication and we gave away an out,” he added said. “Then they came up with two clutch hits which they were able to generate three runs. That was the back breaker.” DeLaRosa would need those runs because in the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles (4-11, 1-6) weren’t about to go away just yet. With one out, senior catcher Octavio Trejo and sophomore Arturo Loera singled before DeLaRosa hit Acuna to load the bases. Junior shortstop John Lemos was then safe on a fielder’s choice with senior pinch runner Elias Gomez scoring. The Eagles wasted another good performance from Arzate, who also gave up five hits and struck out four. His two previous league losses have been to Cerritos (2-1) and Mayfair (4-2) and both times, the Eagles had to score from the fifth inning on to avoid being shutout. Artesia will host Glenn today, hoping to sweep the Eagles for the second straight season. The Pioneers will then face Millikan on Saturday in a Redondo Tournament game before hosting a doubleheader with Royal a week from today. Glenn will try to stay in the playoff hunt with a home and home series against Norwalk on Tuesday and Thursday with
the home game on Tuesday. “More important than playoffs right now, I just would like to see our kids play a little better,” Cruz said. “We’re taking strides to get better defensively but offensively, we’ve struggled all year. Even the games we’ve won, we didn’t have more than seven or eight hits.” SUBURBAN LEAGUE SOFTBALL
Minami, Fitterer combine for no-hitter, Cerritos ready for La Mirada By Loren Kopff With a home and home series against La Mirada on the horizon, the Cerritos softball team made sure there would be no letdown against Bellflower last week. Two days after the Lady Dons posted their biggest Suburban League shutout since Mar. 24, 2004, sophomore Kaylilani Minami and freshman Rachel Fitterer combined on a no-hitter as Cerritos blasted Bellflower 12-0 last Friday. Cerritos (11-2 overall, 5-1 in the league) posted its first season sweep against the Buccaneers since 2006 and outscored them 32-0 in the two games, collecting 31 hits while the pitching yielded just two singles, a double and two walks in the two games. “Our focus wasn’t La Mirada,” said Cerritos head coach Bob Medina. “Our focus was Bellflower. I think we achieved our goal. They have a lot of good talent. When you hit the ball like we do and we have so many hits, it’s hard to defend that.” Minami retired 12 of the 13 batters she faced, walking Secret Yeoman with one out in the top of the second inning. She fanned four batters before giving way to Fitterer who needed 10 pitches in the fifth inning. Meanwhile, the hitting continued to torment more league pitching. Junior right fielder Sarah Smith, the team’s catcher the previous two seasons, went four for four with two runs batted in. That came after a three for five performance with seven RBI including a grand slam last Wednesday. Freshman center fielder Lilianna Herrera went three for four and junior third baseman Alyssa Marquez went two for two and scored three times. Through the first six games of league action, the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section’s Division II seventh ranked team was batting .350 with Smith at a blistering .667 with 13
RBI and five home runs. Her replacement behind the plate, freshman Jasmine Javier, was batting .450 with half a dozen RBI and three doubles. In the first game with Bellflower, Javier went five for five and drove in five runs. “Jasmine coming to our team is a great asset,” Medina said. “She brings a great mindset as a catcher and gives us the opportunity to move Sarah Smith all over the place. “Liliana is also just as talented as Jasmine Javier and just as important as Jasmine Javier,” he continued. “She just comes to us with a good, solid bat. She’s constantly working on our philosophy and our way of thinking of where to hit the ball and what to do with the ball.” Last Friday’s victory also matched the entire win production from last season and one more win will give the Lady Dons their best season since 2006 when they went 15-8-1 overall and 10-2 in the circuit. Cerritos will now try to do something it hasn’t done but four times since 1998-beat La Mirada. The Matadores have taken the past 20 games from Cerritos and entered this week as one of two remaining undefeated teams in the league. “I don’t believe this was a tune-up,” Medina said of the Bellflower series. “I think we’re being challenged because our own fate is in our own hands. I believe that we can beat probably any team out here, which we proved [against Mayfair].” SAN GABRIEL VALLEY LEAGUE SOFTBALL
Injury-plagued Gahr no match for hot-hitting Downey By Loren Kopff
DOWNEY-Gahr softball head coach Mike Rogers knew his team would have to pull a Harry Houdini act in order to upset the host Downey Vikings this past Tuesday afternoon in its San Gabriel Valley League opener. With junior pitcher Maya Varela on the shelf for the rest of the season with an injury, her younger sibling, Mel, was called on for her seventh start of the season. But the third ranked team in the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division III poll banged out 14 hits and routed the Gladiators 12-2 in a game that lasted only five innings. Gahr dropped to 4-11 overall and has scored no more than two runs in five of its last six

games. “It was tough,” Rogers said. “She was nervous, along with her teammates. We have a lot of young girls on this team and they were just a little bit nervous.” Even though the freshman pitcher got ahead in the count on four of the first six batters she faced, the Vikings scored four times in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run homerun from Jazmyne Cortinas. Gahr answered back in the top of the second when junior catcher Krystal Purkey was safe on an error and senior designated player Amber Giron cracked her second long shot of the season over the right center fence. It would be the only hit Gahr would collect off of Ale Guillen, the second one-hitter an opponent has thrown against Gahr this season. In fact, following Giron’s blast, Guillen would retire nine straight before walking junior left fielder Jessica Morales to lead off the fifth. Meanwhile, Mel Varela couldn’t keep the streaking Vikings (10-2-1, 2-0) at bay as they scored once in the second, four in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth. Downey is now hitting .402 as a team and has five players batting at least .476. Rachel Rodriguez and Anissa Urtez both went three for three and three other players picked up a pair of hits. “It’s tough to be a freshman coming in here,” Rogers said of his pitcher. “We did the best we could but we didn’t play catch either. We didn’t do our part playing defense.” One bright spot in this season of the walking wounded was the return of senior pitcher Marissa Frese, who came back from a torn meniscus injury. She pitched the final two innings and was slated to pitch against Dominguez (Apr. 14) and Lynwood, today. The Gladiators will then be off until Apr. 26 when they host Paramount in a game that will most likely decide third place once the regular season comes to an end. “It’s been a trying season but these kids never give up,” Rogers said. “They’re great kids. This is probably one of the best groups I’ve coached since I’ve been at Gahr. They have a lot of heart and a lot of desire. Talking to them just now, they took this to heart and I think they’re going to bounce back.”

Metro’s 30/10 Initiative has now gone national as America Fast Forward. The proposal would leverage federal assistance to accelerate construction of local transportation projects. Here are updates on a few of the projects: Regional Connector Transit Corridor > The Federal Transit Administration gave formal approval for preliminary engineering work to begin on the Regional Connector, bringing it a step closer to actual construction. > A two-mile, fully underground light rail line has been approved for the route of the Regional Connector Transit Corridor connecting the Metro Gold Line, Metro Blue Line and future Expo Line through Downtown LA. > The route would connect with the Metro Blue and Expo lines at 7th Street /Metro Center Station and with the Metro Gold Line at Alameda Street.
Eastside Transit Corridor Phase 2 > Public update meetings were held recently on the environmental study evaluating alternatives extending the Metro Gold Line farther east from East LA. > Two routes being explored are from Atlantic Boulevard east along either the Pomona Freeway or Washington Boulevard.
West Santa Ana Transit Corridor > A series of community meetings are being held over the next 20 months to explore transportation alternatives for an abandoned 20-mile rail right-of-way between the cities of Paramount and Santa Ana. > Alternatives to be evaluated include bus rapid transit, light rail, commuter rail and high-speed rail. GAHR HERO
Continued from page 1 He said the stroller had submerged and had drifted about 12 feet away from the shore. “I waded out to the stroller deciding not to try to undo the straps and lifted the stroller out of the water.” Daniel who is six feet tall said the water was up to his chest. When he reached the shore his friend took the stroller from him. “The baby must have been under the water for approximately 10 seconds,” he added. He told the mother to take the baby to the nearest hospital and have him checked over because the water has a chemical in it called Bluestone, which clears. the water. Daniel, who is an avid fisherman, fishes in the lake as often as he can. “I only live a few blocks from the park,” he explained. When asked if he went home to change his clothes, he said no. “I dried off pretty fast.” Asked if he had caught many fish, he said he usually catches bass. Just before the incident he had caught his first bass that afternoon. Asked if he was going to continue his education upon graduation, he said he wanted to be a fireman and what thinking about enrolling at Rio Hondo Community College which Has a Fire Academy Program that is ranked second in California.
ARTESIA
Continued from page 1 comprehensive parking master plan to provide solutions for the city’s parking demands in Artesia’s Old Downtown Area.
In his report to the council, Redevelopment and Planning Director Okina Dor said staff studies and the development of a comprehensive parking master plan should lead to recommendations to the city council regarding on-site parking criteria for restaurants and similar uses in the Old Downtown Area. In other business an ordinance establishing definitions of fences, hedges and walls, regulating fence materials in front yards in Single Family Residential (R-l), Agricultural Single Family (A-1), Medium Density Residential (M-D-R), Medium Family Residential (M-R) and Mixed Commercial/Residential (M-DR), Multiple Family Residential (M-R) and Mixed Commercial/Residential (M-D-R) zones was referred back to the Planning Commission for further study that will include materials used for rear yard fencing. At the same time the council extended an interim ordinance prohibiting the erection of new fencing or walls within a side yard of an interior lot or a corner lot that intrudes into a front yard area. The council also approved a request for a conditional use permit to allow storage of plumbing supplies at 18803 Corby Ave. in the light manufacture and industrial zone (M-1). Applicant was MWl, Inc. (Certified Pipe) of Oceanside. The council approved a reduction on Measure V taxes for business and professional uses in buildings on second and higher floors and revised the definition of floor area upon which the tax is calculated. Measurer V taxes would remain at the recently adjusted rate of 13.7 cents per sq. ft. per month for services an professional uses on the first floor of a building in the C-G and CPD zones. The tax rate

was originally 10 cents but was increased for inflation to 13.7 cents effective Jan. 1, 2010. The council reduced it to 10 cents per sq. ft. per month for service and professional uses on the second floor of a building. The tax applies only to service and professional uses that began on Mar. 2, 1999. Those companies that were in existence prior to Mar. 2, 1999 their tax rate is grandfathered in and Measure V
does not affect them. The council also voted, for budgetary reasons, not to have a fireworks display on July 4. The council noted the city was strapped for funds and could not afford to spend $12,000 for a fireworks display. It noted that last year the Artesia business community donated $12,000 for the display.
