n a dramatic request, Cerritos City Councilman Bruce Barrows called for a comprehensive study on the feasibility of contracting out dozens of hourly employees, including the elimination of some city employee pension plans. Barrows is calling his proposal an “effort to trim the cities growing budget problem.” The veteran city councilman is a strong vocal critic of the Cerritos Employees Association (AFSCME Local 619), and made his study request at the end of Monday’s meeting under city council reports. The ABC School Board presented Robert Lopez, a custodian at Gonsalves Elementary School, a Good Samaritan Award at its May 3 meeting. Lopez was working in the schoolyard when he noticed a homeowner, adjacent to the school grounds, on a ladder trimming a tree in his yard. When he looked up a few minutes later the man was gone. Suspecting something had happened he walked over to where he last saw the man and found him lying on the ground unable to move. He called school authorities that called the paramedics. Lopez stayed with him until help arrived. The victim had fractured his neck and any sudden movement on his part could have been fatal. Broad President Maynard Law made the presentation. With Lopez was his wife and members of his family and Gonsalves Principal Robert Benko.

Spend 10 minutes talking with Mike Wunderley and you’re bound to leave his presence an hour later filled with some of his highlights of his time roaming the football sidelines at Valley Christian High School. Although Wunderley left the coaching scene following the 2002 season, he is set to retire from his administrative duties on July 1. Wunderley, who has been associated with V.C. for 38 years, was set to retire at the end of the 2009-2010 school year but decided to stay when former Mike Wunderley superintendent Kevin Kaemingk left last year. He has been the school’s principal of Student Services since 2007. “I love my job; I like the people I work with and I like the community,” Wunderley said. “I like everything about it. Artesia Council recognizes paramedics for saving two year old On the morning of Mar. 1 Engine Station 30 paramedics responded to a call in Artesia for a two-year old girl who was choking on grapes. Upon arrival, Lakewood Sheriff Deputies were performing obstructed airway procedures in an attempt to clear her air passage. When Squad 30 arrived the patient was in respiratory arrest, very cyanotic and no pulse was felt. It was unclear if she was also in cardiac arrest. Paramedics Jose Tovar and Ozzie Cuevas quickly went to work with back blows and chest thrusts. When this did not clear her air passages they used a lar-

yngoscope, Magill forceps and suctioning to successfully remove the grapes lodged in her air passage. Following the grapes being removed, the medics were able to see good chest rise and fall with the use of the BVM. An oral airway was placed and they continued to breathe for the patient. Pulses were detected; skin signs improved rapidly from blue to pink and the patient began breathing on her own. Medics continued to assist in her breathing and monitoring all of her vital signs while base contact was made. The patient was transported to La Palma Hospital with Lakewood sheriffs leading the way, blocking intersections for the ambulance. Others involved in the lifesaving action were firefighter Armitage and Engineer Mills as well as the Lakewood Sheriff deputies and Care Ambulance.

Concern expressed about low return on La Palma's General Fund revenue By Larry Caballero La Palma Councilmember Steve Hwangbo expressed concern during the Cash and Investment report over the paltry 5 percent return on the City’s General Fund revenue at the May 3 city council meeting. City Manager Dominic Lazaretto explained that the City invests in the state’s local investment fund (LAIF) that has paid a reasonable return in the past and has lower management fees than other investments, but he agreed that the City should look into other investment strategies for the future. Several residents shared concerns with the proposed Fiscal Year 2011-12 General Fund Budget, but Rodriguez assured them that it is still in the preliminary stages. “This is just the beginning of the journey.” He encouraged residents to attend public meetings on May 17, Jun. 2 and Jun. 21 when the Draft Budget will be delivered, an informal Q & A on the Budget will take place and the Final Budget will be adopted. The city was presented a Proclamation from representatives from the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) to honor the successful completion of Measure M at the May 3 meeting of the city council. The tax amounted to more than $3 million that La Palma was able to use to “improve the quality of lives for our residents and businesses,” said Rodriguez. La Palma Public Works Director and City Engineer Jeff Moneda explained to the Council that curbs and gutters in the area were in need of significant repairs because of the tree roots. “The roots can also cause potential damage to the water and sewage lines as well,” said Moneda. Pine cones landing on residents’ heads as they take their morning strolls and sap on cars were additional issues, as well as maintenance and on-going repair costs. The residents who lived closest to the trees shared the most complaints while neighbors in adjacent streets wanted the trees to remain. One neighbor said the trees serve as a windbreaker and help stifle freeway noise while also “sucking up” carbon dioxide. Another neighbor requested that an environmental impact survey be done before any action is taken, while another described the trees as “majestic” that helped to raise property values since property owners would enjoy the beauty and grandeur of the trees. Residents also described, “Waking up in the morning, drinking a cup of coffee, watching the birds, and admiring the trees before heading off to work or school.” One concern expressed by all of the neighbors is what kind of tree, if any, would replace the existing pine trees. “Whatever the Council decides tonight,” said one resident, “there will be consequences.” Rodriguez stated that the landscape plan would be established in Phase 2 of the repair, and that no selection was being recommended that night. When one resident told the Council that his mother-in-law almost slipped and “killed herself” on a fallen pine cone, another said tthere was always a possibility of slipping on something while walking. “She could have slipped on something else. That is one price we pay for being closer to nature.” Another concern voice was about the

I understand wealthy Carol Chen’s cold shoulder to working people but not Barrows, beneficiary of his wife's Union Benefits and Pay and Edwards' 35 years of Union work, benefits and retirement, PLUS their council perks and pay, based on Union wages/benefits. Once again the City Manager stacked the deck by putting the Union agenda item after numerous awards, appointments and non-priority business, knowing that residents would pack the council chamber to be heard, some with children or having to work the next day were unable to participate. That trick ‘thins the herd’, still the overwhelming majority of residents supported continuing Union negotiations. Our Congressmember stood for more than three hours waiting to speak when it was within Mayor Carol Chen’s power to move the agenda item up, an arrogant, disrespectful display to say the least. I think it’s high time we leave “Fantasy Land” and elect a council majority willing to reject reactionary political dogma and lead us into tomorrow. Chris Fuentes Cerritos Resident

AFCSME Union Representative accuses city of negotiating in bad faith Accuses City Councilman Barrows of slander. Before we even sat down at the table, city management played games by not providing items the union legally has the right to ask for. Such as, job descriptions for employees positions represented and policies that affect employees. Letters back and forth with management pretending not to understand very simple requests ensued. When the team compiled the proposals, our mistake was in thinking that by putting each proposal in contract language format we were being helpful. Instead, for every one proposal, management derived 5 line items to portray as demands before we even sat at the table. Reviewing our files: we are not children; we are adults who should have every right to view our files. Any mention of removing an item, in our actual proposal, not the management derived interpretation you are quoting, we were hoping for the right to remove whatever the law states as not supposed to be part of our files. Positions: the actual proposal asked for a position equity process and the positions listed were examples of positions to be reviewed. All were invited to add their positions but many members were fearful of retaliation. Stage crew: lower position are being asked to do higher level positions without being paid for serving in that position. All the other items you (Los Cerritos Communty News) refer to are not our proposals at all. You used management propaganda instead of our actual proposals. Management declared impasse. The mediator came in as part of the process, assisted us with creating a proposal that offered a pension decrease with immediate cost savings instead of future savings management's final had affecting only new hires. The mediator took the change to management, came back in 15 minutes stating that the city is not interested. Like every election, the employees union supported candidates for council. OPINION and LET TERS This year more employees volunteered because there are internal issues that need to be fixed and employees now understand that speaking with our council members isn't something to fear. Mailers were sent out with positive sup-

port. The{n} Council Member Barrows sent a slanderous mailer out depicting the employees negatively. At that point, any public interaction was to defend the employees reputation and better inform residents of the disrespectful treatment

at the negotiating table. We came to the table with an open mind ready to have respectful discussions and cross off any item considered financial once we had an explanation to provide our members. Once management misrepresented our

proposals in their bullitem, it now seems clear that bargaining in good faith was not a priority for the employees representing management.

Preventing sleep related headache symptoms By Dr. Mark M. Chung, MD, FAASM Headaches are frequently associated with sleep-wake cycle disturbances. Over 28 million Americans are chronically affected with this disorder. Awakening headaches are associated with 4-6% of the population, 18% of insomniacs, and 18-60% of those with sleep apnea, and 21% of those with depression. Headaches occur more commonly among snorers. Obstructive sleep apnea is almost certainly under-recognized in headache populations. Cluster headaches tend to occur with men and are usually one sided on the head and above the eye and/or on the side temple lasting 15-180 minutes, occurring between the hours of 9pm to 10am. Cathy, an administrator for Memorial HealthCare IPA. Later that April afternoon, he was staring at his crossword puzzle and hoping to finally finish it. Suddenly, he began having excruciating chest pains. They continued as Fred started to sweat despite his cold chills. He knew he was in trouble and called his wife on her cell phone, but Cathy was on another call. Their youngest daughter— also an employee of the IPA--happened to be in Cathy's office and answered the cell phone. The next few minutes were critical. Fred asked his daughter, “Where's your mom? I need your mom!” She asked, “What's wrong daddy?” and Fred said he was having chest pain. She responded "Mom is on the way," hung up and dialed 911. Several minutes later, LA County engine 94 arrived at the Gies residence, followed by paramedic squad 45. They saw Fred collapse as they entered the house. The fire fighters had already started CPR on Fred when Cathy arrived on the scene. They defibrillated Fred twice while continuing CPR, as Cathy watched helplessly. The engine captain told her they were doing all they can. “I asked them to take my husband to the heart center in Long Beach, but they told me he wouldn't make it,” Cathy says. “He assured me that Lakewood Regional Medical Center had everything in place to help my husband.” As Fred was

Without the training, persistence and expertise of the entire team of paramedics and the STEMI team, they would likely be carving my headstone right now.” “A life was saved. I don’t think I need to say much more than that except how proud I am of our team for a job very well done.” said Joseph Badalian, President and CEO of Lakewood Regional Medical Center. “As a firefighter, Fred has been there for so many in their time of need. We’re honored to give back and be there for him.” Fred walked out of the hospital one week to the day after his near-death experience. His chest was tender from the relentless CPR he had received, but had no other lingering effects from his massive heart attack. “It wasn’t my time,” he says. “The paramedics told me they were not going to let me die, not on their watch. And they didn’t. They made professional decisions to get me where I needed to be. Because of them and Lakewood Regional, my life began again.”

8 COMMUNITY NEWS GROUP • MAY 13, 2011 WUNDERLEY from Page 1 have a vacation.� While Wunderley has been in the office since 1999 when he took over as the assistant principal, he is more affectionately known as the Crusaders legendary football coach where he amassed 206 victories as a varsity coach. Wunderley graduated from Excelsior High School in Norwalk in 1964 but never played football there and graduated from California State University, Fullerton in 1969. He actually can thank his wife of 40 years, Letty, for getting him in the V.C. door. Her two sisters were cheerleaders who had boyfriends on the basketball team that advanced to the California Interscholastic FederationSouthern Section Division I-A finals in 1972. Wunderley was asked to take pictures of that game where he met the school’s yearbook photographer who told him about an opening at the junior high school, now called the middle school. Wunderley’s first job at the school was as a walk-on baseball coach but when he interviewed for that position, the school also needed a junior varsity football coach. In addition to his first coaching jobs, he also was a part time geography and U.S. history teacher in 1973 and coached the junior varsity squad for six years before slowly moving up the chain. Wunderley moved to the high school in 1979 where he was finally a varsity head coach in addition to teaching for the next 20 years. He said that nothing he had done in teacher education at CSUF prepared him for the first time he walked into a classroom. Wunderley would be a physical education teacher before later moving to the history classroom. Wunderley can also credit his success on the field to Dick Coury whom he worked with at CSUF as a graduate assistant. At nights, Wunderley would take a football theory class. From that point on, it was all rolling as the Crusaders won a

CIF championship in 1986 and 1985. “I can say this for sure, when I started at Valley Christian in 1973, I didn’t expect to be here for 38 years,� Wunderley said. “It was not my plan.� Wunderley has story upon story about almost every team he coached and almost every opponent he faced. He will constantly bring up the rivalry with Ontario Christian and how important it is to the V.C. community. The Crusaders had lost to Ontario Christian in 1978, so his first game against the heated rivals in 1979 meant something for Wunderley. He recalls that he planned special things for Ontario Christian the week of that game in 1979. He gave his players green wristbands during practice that week and painted the V.C. helmets green. Whatever he did worked as the Crusaders went out and beat the Knights that season. Since then, Wunderley has always dubbed the V.C./Ontario Christian games as “The Classic�. “You can’t be a head football coach at Valley Christian without talking about Ontario Christian games,� Wunderley said. “That’s a natural rivalry. The people who built Ontario Christian out in the Inland Empire attended Valley Christian. There’s been that natural connection forever.� Wunderley also talks about the long, grueling trips to Tehachapi for five straight seasons for a postseason game. As if it was right on cue, it would always rain hard the week of and during V.C.’s playoff games with the Warriors and in 1986, the Crusaders beat them in overtime in the semifinals which put the school in the finals for the first time since 1964. “We scored first [in overtime]; threw a touchdown pass and held them for three downs,� he remembers. “I called a timeout and told my defensive coordinator to go out and talk to them. As he walked towards the huddle, he turned around and walked back. I thought, ‘what was going

on’? The quarterback went back to pass and we chased him out of the pocket and chased him down at the three-yard line. After the game, I asked my defensive coordinator why he didn’t go out there. He said he had heard the two defensive captains say, ‘they will not score, they will not score. We will stop them here’.� Then there’s the 1995 team which Wunderley will remember the most because the Crusaders beat Orange Lutheran twice, once in Olympic League action and once for the Division X championship. Both games were won in the final two minutes in what Wunderley called, ‘The Drive and The Drive II’. “What [Orange Lutheran head coach] Jim [Kunau] knew about us was the same thing I knew about him,� Wunderley recalled. “His team was going to be well prepared. They were going to be more complicated than us; we were pretty simplistic. But bottom line was Valley Christian and Orange Lutheran were well coached teams and well disciplined teams and we were going to go out and play for 48 minutes.� Kunau agreed, “Mike was always known as one of the premier coaches in Southern California, tough fundamentally sound, his teams always played with great spirited passion. When I first started they were the top dog, we were on bottom of the Olympic League they really set the bar high because of Mike’s work. He was the dean of So Cal football, he was very well respected�. The 2002 season will be a memorable one but at the same time heartbreaking for Wunderley. He picked up his 200th career victory against St. Bernard in a 75-28 thumping on Homecoming Night. That season also showcased a powerful running attack and a high octane offense that advanced to their last CIF finals to this point where they hooked up with Carpinteria on a rain soaked, windy night at Santa Barbara Community College. Both teams had their share of miscues but when the clock read triple zeros, V.C. had lost 26-22 with the winning score coming with 34 seconds remaining in the game. A few months later, Wunderley officially retired from the coaching ranks and to this very day, still has not seen the game film of that championship loss, saying he didn’t need to know what the team didn’t do right. Wunderley said he always wanted to involve more people in the football program. He would have a crew of girls from study hall during the last period of the day that would put the striping on the football helmets every Thursday afternoon in the locker room. But when it came to that milestone victory, Wunder-

People knew what to expect. Kids who came here to play up from our junior high who had been watching us for two years knew what to expect when they got into our program. “I always said to teams that if things go right, at some point in time, the coaching staff gives the team to the team,� he continued. “You don’t do that in the first game. You have to earn that and build to that.� Retiring from coaching football became too emotional for Wunderley to the point where in 2003, he couldn’t even stand on the V.C. sidelines or sit in the stands. He recalls that when the Crusaders were on the road, he would ask the opponent’s coaching staff if he could stand on their sidelines in the corner by the end zone. “When you’re a head football coach, especially at a small school, you have a voice,� Wunderley said. “You have a voice in the community. When you stop being [a coach], you lose that voice. I was very fortunate that I was still working here, so I still have a relationship with the kids.� Wunderley would constantly coin small phrases to motivate his players, like ‘you play the first five to win the second five so you can qualify for the last four’ or ‘the path to the (Olympic League championship) patch, the road to the ring’. “I would hope that I made an impact on students in the classroom as much as I did on the football field,� Wunderley said. “I don’t know if I went into it ever thinking that I would have an impact on a person’s life. I was going to do what I had been trained to do and what I liked to do. “I can’t imagine not watching Valley Christian play football,� Wunderley sums up. “[Current head coach] Erick Streelman has been very kind and has asked me to talk to the football team every year before the Ontario Christian game, just to talk a little about the history. Last year I did it on the grass, in the dark at Ontario Christian before they went on the field. One of the things I told them, and I meant it was, ‘I don’t where I’ll be or what I’ll be doing, but I will not miss a Valley Christian-Ontario Christian game as long as I’m walking and talking’.�

Fedde Science Class Scores at Middle School Free Concert at Artesia-Cerritos United Science Completion By Jerry Bernstein The Fedde Science Olympia Team attended the Los Angles Regional Science Olympia recently. Thirty-four middle schools participated in the event with Fedde competing in seven different categories. Fedde science instructor John Laird said the Fedde team was one of only five teams that finished in the top two in three or more events, adding in the three events they placed second they

Weekly crime summary May 2 - 8, 2011 There were twenty-eight Part I felony crime investigations conducted by members of the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station last week, up from twenty-one the week before. Robberies, residential burglaries, and vehicle burglaries increased while vehicle thefts decreased. Commercial burglaries remained the same. 287 calls for service were handled by patrol personnel, up from 261 the previous reporting period. The new 2011 weekly average in calls for service is now 258. Three robberies were reported. At 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday May 3, a male suspect grabbed a necklace worn by an employee of a fast-food restaurant in the 11800 block of Del Amo Boulevard and struggled with other employees in an attempt to flee. He was successfully detained and arrested by deputies. The second case occurred at 7:20 p.m. the same evening in the 20200 block of Bloomfield Avenue after a male shoplifting suspect fought with loss prevention personnel attempting to detain him. He was also arrested by deputies. On Saturday May 7 at 11:50 a.m. three suspects entered a jewelry store in the Los Cerritos Center and smashed display cabinets. After removing numerous watches, they attempted to escape in a vehicle but a pursuit by Cerritos deputies was initiated that resulted in the arrest of two and the recovery of all the stolen items. Residential burglaries rose from three to six last week with another one attempted. Three of the completed crimes were attributed to open/unlocked doors or windows, and two windows and a door were pried open. Cameras, laptop computers, jewelry, cash, DVDs, TVs, and boots were taken. The 2011 weekly average in residential burglaries remains at 3.5. Unfortunately, most jurisdictions report that a leading cause of residential burglaries is that an occupant leaves a door or window open or unlocked. This provides the burglar(s) with an effortless entry into the home. Avoid becoming a victim and take the brief moments needed to make sure that all doors and windows are secured before you leave. Three commercial burglaries were again reported. Two were closed business where thieves cut a door and pried another. A fitness center locker was also burglarized. Debit cards, credit cards, and cash were stolen. The 2011 weekly average in “other structure”/commercial

burglaries is now 2.8. Vehicle burglaries increased from six to seven last week. Four of the crimes last week were in high-volume commercial parking lots. Six of the vehicles were SUVs. Other items reported stolen included laptop computers, backpacks, surfboards, DVD players, tools, cell phones, purses, GPS units, and a wallet. The new 2011 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 5.3. Visible property left in the passengers compartment continues to be the number one cause of vehicle burglaries. GPS units have become very popular among drivers and thiefs. Don’t leave ANYTHING in your vehicle that wil attract a thief. Vehicle thefts dropped from six to four last week. Two Toyotas, a Honda, and an SUV were stolen from highvolume commercial parking lots. The current 2011 weekly average in this category is 2.5. Smash and grab robbery at Ben Bridge By Randy Economy A popular jewelry store inside a jam packed Los Cerritos Center was robbed late this morning in what in what law enforcement is calling a “smash and grab heist” of high valued watches and other pricy items. The Los Cerritos Center was crowded with thousands of Mother’s Day shoppers when at least three men wearing black hoods walked into the Ben Bridges Jewelry Store carrying sledgehammers, and “just began smashing” and “grabbing” as “fast as they could,” according to witnesses. Less than 20 minutes later, two of the suspects were caught in nearby Bellflower. According to Nicole Noshida with the Public Information Office for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in Monterey Park, a second suspect was caught at Rosecrans and Atlantic. A third suspect is still being sought near the area of Bellflower and Park in Bellflower. Noshida described him as a male black, between 5 ft. 11 and 6 ft. tall, approximately 170 lbs., and wearing blue jeans and a blue “pull over sweat shirt.” Small sledge hammers were used in the crime, and according to Noshida, law enforcement is not saying if the items were recovered. Witnesses that spoke on the condition of “anonymity” reported that they

saw three “hooded men just walked through the mall and walked into Ben Bridges and just started banging.” “It sounded like gun shots. We all just hit the ground and covered our heads,” said an employee inside a nearby cosmetic store. “It was so loud, and scary, and everyone just started running and screaming,” the frightened employee remarked. This was the second time in less than two months that this same jewelry store was involved in a “smash and grab” robbery. Cerritos softball head coach Bob Medina and his first-year counterpart at Norwalk, Isaac Galvez, both had specific game plans heading into last Friday’s key Suburban League tilt that had first place ramifications. Cerritos clinched a share of the league title, the first time since 2000 that the Lady Dons have won at least a piece of the league crown. Barrows is calling his proposal an “effort to trim the cities growing budget problem.” The veteran city councilman is a strong vocal critic of the Cerritos Employees Association (AFSCME Local 619), and made his study request at the end of Monday’s meeting under city council reports. A spokesperson for the employees union called Barrow’s proposal a “clear violation of the California Open Meeting Law” and charged him with “blindsiding” the rank and file city employees. An “impasse” in contract negotiations for 2011 was declared during the April 28 Cerritos City Council meeting. Talks for a new contract for the 2012 fiscal year will begin in earnest at the end of May. Barrows suggested that a study by management to “possibly go out to bid to contract many line-item employees only makes sense due to the sagging economy and poor business climate.” “Now is the time to look at how we operate our service departments, and how we hire staff for the future,” Barrows said. When asked about what employees he was referencing, Barrows specifically mentioned hourly employees within departments such as the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts Center, the Cerritos Library, city maintenance yard and other

Union Says They Were “Blindsided” Erica Zeitlin, spokesperson for AFSCME Local #619, who represents the Cerritos Employees Association, said that they were “blindsided” by Councilman Barrows. Zeitlin said the union would be “absolutely opposed” to “any proposal” to contract out jobs and that Barrows was now “picking a political fight.” She also said Barrows was continuing his “illconceived attempt to under mind the hard working employees who are the backbone of the City of Cerritos.” Zeitlin, also believes Barrows may have violated the California Open Meeting Law for bringing the item forward in the matter in which it was raised. She said the employee union will review their options and will even consider legal action against Barrows and the City for discussing the item publicly. “If the vast majority of city jobs are indeed contracted out, one has to wonder what the actual fiscal savings will amount to,” she said. Asked if Zeitlin or any member of the union negotiating teams plans to contact Barrows about his request or concept, she said she has “no intention whatsoever in calling Mr. Barrows, about anything, period.” “He has picked a fight with the wrong people,” she responded.

Mayor Responds to Critics Cerritos Mayor Carol Chen defended how she conducted the April 28 city council meeting by lambasting critics who spoke out against her and the city council during the past two weeks. “As the Mayor, I made a conscious decision not to change the order of the agenda,” said Chen. During that meeting, which lasted till 2:11 a.m., several residents and union members, including Rep. Sanchez were vocally critically of having to wait “nearly 3 1/2 hours” before the labor agenda item was addressed. Sanchez chastised Chen and the City Council for “making her wait, along with other fellow Cerritos residents” for hours while the city council dealt with “non essential agenda items.” Chen said on Monday that she would never “tell Congress how to conduct their business in Washington, DC” and said it was “inappropriate” for Rep. Sanchez to comment on how she, as Mayor, oversaw a Cerritos City Council meeting. Mayor Chen also said she took exception to critics who called the vote for the Union-City impasse as being based on political party lines. “It was about saving money for the taxpayers, not politics.” Scouts honored The Cerritos City Council also honored four outstanding young people on achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and Gold Star. Both awards are the highest ranking one can achieve in the Boy and Girl Scouts of America. It is finally getting underway and members of the Norwalk City Council couldn’t be more thrilled. “Finally¸ we are getting this project underway,” said an elated Norwalk vice Mayor Cheri Kelley this past week. Local residents are warned to get ready for bulldozers and street closures, possible traffic nightmares, and lots of dust blowing in the air. When completed (in around four years), experts are predicting that the “New I-5” will be transformed into a brilliant highway “jewel” that should last for well into the later part of this century. The project, which will cost taxpayers more than $1.2 billion dollars by the time the last inch of concrete is dried , will change our driving commute and traffic pattern forever. Construction begins this week This week the first phase of the 1-5 widening project begins with the Carmenita Road bridge widening and reconstruction.

They said the Postal Service is consolidating operations at its Processing & Distribution Centers, which if it occurs in Hawaiian Gardens will mean no post office in the city. Mayor Mike Gomez and Councilmember Barry Bruce said the city was told the Post Office was looking for a smaller site in the city in a cost saving move and planned to be open for business by Oct. 1. They said they were told the new post Office would offer residents the same service they now receive including post office mailboxes, the mailing of letters and packages, and the purchase of stamps. The only difference would be outgoing mail that would be transported to the Los Alamitos Post Office where it would be sorted for distribution. There would be no interruption of delivery service in Hawaiian Gardens.

The Carmentia Road bridge is one of the oldest “over crosses” along the current 5-Freeway. The project will expand the current 2-lane narrow expanse into a modern convenient overcrossing with three lanes for cars in directions, a pedestrian walkway and bike lanes. Yvette Kirnin, P.E., Executive Director Authority Engineer gave an update to the Norwalk City Council on Tuesday afternoon. “We are going to completely change the traffic pattern in Norwalk and this entire area for generations to come. In the long run the community will benefit tremendously,” she said. Over the next three to four years, the I-5 Freeway will be expanded from its current three lanes in both directions into a 10 lane “superhighway” that will include a center carpool lanes, new on and off ramps, the closure of some current exits, the construction of new on ramps. Bulldozers will be removing hundreds of current residences, and businesses that currently are adjacent to the 5 Freeway. This stretch of highway is currently driven by millions of motorist’s week in and week out. “Let’s face it, this part of the freeway is just plain worn out, and it is about time this project is finally going to be started,” said Norwalk Mayor Mike Mendez.

Mendez and the rest of the Norwalk City Council will be holding several “town hall” styles meeting with Cal Trans and project experts to keep “everyone on the same page” and to make sure that “every single question and concern of every resident can be addressed” added Mendez. Councilman Luigi Vernola said he has waited most of his adult life for the 5 Freeway to be expanded. “I am so happy to see this finally get underway.” A thumbnail look into the I-5 Widening Project construction schedule. First, the Carmenita Road Bridge Expansion will begin on May 14th and continue till 2014. Look for traffic delays but no actual street closures on Carmenita Road during the length of the project. The location will affect traffic on Carmenita Road from Alondra Boulevard in Cerritos northbound to Rosecrans Avenue in Norwalk. Also impacted will be the traffic on the I-5 at the Carmenita Road off ramps in both directions, and look for additional traffic tie ups along the Firestone Boulevard Frontage Road. Segment 1 will begin at the I-5 and Alondra Boulevard at the Cerritos, Santa Fe Springs, and La Mirada border in December of 2011. Look for street detours on Alondra Boulevard. Segment 2 will affect the area from Artesia Boulevard to the Coyote Creek. Property acquisition will be completed

January 4, 2013 and construction will start on June 17, 2013 at this critical part of the freeway. Segment 3 will include the reconstruction of the Shoemaker Road Bridge, the Rosecrans Avenue Bridge and the construction of a new “undercrossing” at Bloomfield Road at the I-5. Segment 4 will involve San Antonio Drive, Imperial Highway, and the Orr and Day Road over hang, and construction will begin in this area in August 2012. Segment 5, will begin in May of 2013 and will include the Florence Avenue interchange, north of the Orr and Day over hang at the I-5 and 605 Interchange. He said the city inspector looked only at the areas where the applicant had said needed repairs. In other business the council approved six applications for the operation

Cerritos High School Wind Symphony Recognized

Members of the Cerritos High School Wind Symphony that recently played at Carnegie Hall were presented with Certificates of Recognition by the ABC School Board at its May. 3 meeting. Director Tim Trost said this was the first time in five years they had been invited to play at Carnegie Hall. He said the rest of the group was home studying for a test the next day. He also announced the group had received an invitation to play at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England. Pr Present to receive their certificates were Christian Santos, Basanyh Muralikrishrar, Micah Feri, Carl Cosue, Brian King, and Fernando Reed. Councilmember Rodriguez brought an insect eating plant that captured the kid's imagination. He offered a prize to anyone who could come up with the name of

the plant; at the program's end, there were still no winners. Most importantly, Mr. Rodriquez, who is an avid gardener, provided guidance for the kids on how to plant the strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, and watermelons.
