By Randy Economy A dead body was found early Wednesday morning in a parking lot located at Moody and Orangethorpe on the Cerritos La Palma boarder. Law enforcement has opened an investigation. According to long time Cerritos resident Marshall Butt, who lives at Bigelow and Carmenita, less than 100 feet from where the body was located, he was woken up by his wife who heard “a crackling sound, and a horrific smell.” “When we looked out the window, we saw something on fire,” Butt said. “Something was on fire, and the fire department was here within minutes,” he said. “The next thing we saw was a white sheet being placed over the bushes, and yellow crime street tape,” he said. The name or sex of the person who died has not been released. More details at www.loscerritosnews.net

Whitney Principal bids a fond farewell By Larry Caballero When Whitney High School Principal Patricia Hager was growing up and attending the public schools in Kentucky, she knew that some day she would be a teacher. After graduating from the University of Kentucky majoring in English, she moved to California where she taught for two years in a private school for dyslexic students. Immediately, she knew there were issues at the school. “There was no sense of community, and no programs or clubs for the students to join.” Hager said that by default she became the school’s Activities Director. Her next assignment was Culver City High where she taught for six years and soon was the English Chair as well as the club sponsor for the pep squad, MECHA and the Black Student Union. She eventually earned her Administrative Masters Degree at Pepperdine University, and she became the Assistant Principal of Student Services at Tustin High School where she dealt with student discipline, attendance and counseling. “My first day on the job there was an emergency at the school, and I had to call 911,” said Hager. During her tenure the school incorporated tardy sweeps and became more proactive in addressing school problems.

More than 78% of the students are Korean, Chinese, Filipino or Indian, and all must pass an entrance exam before they are admitted. Hager is proud of her work in receiving a grant for the building of a $6 million, 26,000 square foot Multimedia Learning Center that should be completed in Feb. 2012, and is about six months ahead of schedule. It will consist of a 500 seat auditorium and laboratory/ studio classrooms with state of the art technology. “I still can’t believe that a student from the University of Kentucky would some day be the Principal of the #1 High Whitney Principal Patricia Hager will miss the students, teachers, parents and School in the country,” said Hager. staff when she leaves at the end of June to become Assistant Superintendent of

Human Resources for La Canada Flintridge School District. Her next school was Huntington Beach High where she continued to practice her philosophy of supporting the needs of students so that they will be successful once they graduate. Hager has been Principal at Whitney High School for 10 years. “When I applied for a position, there were actually two positions—one at Whitney and one at Artesia High.” After the interview process, Hager was told that the District felt she would be a better fit at Whitney. “ I love this place, and I’m going to miss the school and all of the wonderful students, but it’s time to move on,” said Hager.

She is proud of many accomplishments during her tenure at Whitney, but especially for changing the school’s Mission Statement that shifted its policy of encouraging students to only attend Ivy League schools rather than the best matched colleges. “Our students should be attending a college not for bragging rights but for the right reasons,” said Hager. Whitney High has been named the number one high school in the nation, and many do attend very good colleges. “Nine years ago, our students received about $200,000 in scholarships, but last year the amount was more than $8.3 million. It should be even higher this year when 186 seniors will be graduating.” Even so, Hager has always encouraged teachers, staff and students “to set our goals even higher. We should always be asking ourselves how do we make it

ABCUSD Superintendent Dr. Gary Smuts began his annual "Walking for Reading" program at Cerritos Elementary School at around 7:30 a.m. Thousands of students from the district greeted him campus to campus.
Normally, the athletic Smuts, and an entourage of dedicated school, community leaders and volunteers would run from each school within the ABCUSD to promote an aggressive reading program that challenges ABCUSD students to read for one million hours during a one year period. Due to a recent double hip replacement surgery, Smuts had to make this year’s journey a “brisk walk” instead of an all out run. “The main purpose is to promote reading for every student within the ABC School District,” said Smuts on Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. in front of students at Cerritos Elementary School, which is consistently ranked as one of the top 10 academically successful primary schools in California. “Cerritos Elementary, and all of our campuses represent a new spirit of
and to see his dedication to promote reading in our schools in an inspiration,” said Cerritos Councilman Joseph Cho who walked the entire route with the group. “I want to encourage our students to become independent readers and to enrich their lives by exploring our world through books, and newspapers and other educational periodicals,” said Smuts. The walk lasted more than seven and a half hours, and it ended at Pat Nixon Elementary School located on 195th and Jacob Avenue in Cerritos. “All of us need to take steps each and every day to encourage reading for our children,” Smuts said. “Walking for Reading is a symbolic effort that serves as a wonderful reminder about the power of learning, one step at a time.”

Electric ToothbrushesAre they better? Your dentist may have suggested that you start using an electric toothbrush after years of using hand brushing. Why? Are they better and more effective? What’s wrong with my normal brushing? They are how much? These are typical responses I have witnessed in my dental practice. I think electric toothbrushes are great and that everybody should invest in one of the good products you find on the store shelves. Sonicare, Oral-B electric, and Roto-Dent are three that provide the finest in electric toothbrushes. Now let’s investigate whether they are better than hand brushing. For many people with normal sized mouths and straight teeth manual brushing will maintain a good clean environment for optimal health. When mouth sizes are small and teeth are crowded and tight electric brushes will easily attack difficult to reach areas. Your dentist may have noticed that you brush too hard and are wearing away the teeth and causing gum recession. Using electric toothbrushes with less force will be less erosive on your

teeth and still clean very effectively. The very back molars are sometimes forgotten or impossible to clean with hand brushing. The electric brushes will clean even if you just “hold” it against the tooth. Most dentists will advise to spend at least two minutes when brushing. This is also very true with electric brushes. Electric brushes are no shortcut for hand brushing and are not meant to be “faster”. However, they will provide more brush strokes per tooth per second of use and ultimately get your teeth cleaner. Which electric brush is better? I like all of them. In fact I have three different brushes I use daily. Sonicare by Phillips and Oral-B Professional by Braun are the big over-the-counter brushes. They have robust motors and a long battery life. Sonicare has an ultrasonic wave action and pulses the toothpaste between the teeth. Oral-B has an oscillating round brush that scrubs the tooth surface. Roto-Dent is sold through dental offices and has the finest brush fibers available and is preferred for people with tooth erosion and fragile gums. It is a simple rotary round brush. My advice for brushing is to be gentle but thorough. Giving yourself at least two minutes in the morning and before bedtime for brushing is best. Don’t try to rush through and press harder on the brush. Pressing harder will not achieve better results and could lead to early tooth wear. neck and neck for the trophy, finishing within points of each other. The Battle is the culmination of a year's worth of rigorous reading practice for fourth and fifth graders. At the beginning of the school year, students are assigned a set of 20 novels to read, and then placed into teams of six team members to memorize book facts ranging from character names to thematic details. The competition tests children's memory, comprehension, and perseverance for reading, given how many texts they must finish to advance to the final rounds. The battle is a district tradition held for friendly competition and to inspire reading. The event was hosted this year at Lakeview Elementary in Sante Fe Springs. The auditorium was packed with cheering families, teachers, and students waving signs, wearing school tee-shirts, and chanting team names. Two of Cresson's three teams placed in the final round, with the "Cresson Pages," taking home the first place district trophy to display on campus until next year, and a second Cresson team, the "Book Crooks," taking the third place medal. Studebaker Elementary's team, the "Readers of the Galaxy," came in a close second during the nail-biting final round. The grueling battle began at 8:30 in the morning and the fourth and final round did not end until 2:00pm. As the Battle ended and the parents, teachers, and students cheered on their winning teams, one Cresson student was overheard exclaiming, "We made Cresson History!"

Local resident wins iPad2 from Your City Coupons Left: A very happy Sue Wight, coowner of WrightWay Window works and an "avid reader" of Los Cerritos Community News, was all smiles when YourCityCoupons.net, a subsidiary of Los Cerritos Community News, visited her office to give the brand new iPad 2 she won in YCC's latest contest. "I was just about to go out and buy one, now I can spend the money on something else, like shoes", a beaming Ms. Wright said. YCC will be having another Ipad2 giveaway in July. NORWALK con't from page 1 from his wife and held the child captive with a shot gun pointed at his child’s head. The event took place at the 12300 block of Alondra Boulevard on a residential lot that has two dwellings located on the property. According to Lt. Dana Chemnitzer with the Norwalk Sheriff’s Department, they received a call at 11:05 a.m. from the wife of the suspect, later identified as Gerald Gibbons, 32, who allegedly grabbed their two year old daughter and took her into one of the two houses located on the property. According to Chemnitzer, Gibbons was holding a shotgun and at times was putting the gun to the head of his daughter. The couple allegedly had a domestic
dispute earlier in the morning that lead up to the incident. Several squad cars and the SWAT team closed down the area between Alondra Boulevard and Norwalk and Pioneer for a few hours as they tried to coax Gibbons surrender. According to Chemnitzer, they were able to get in contact with suspect Gibbons via telephone and the situation was resolved without incident. Gibbons was arrested and his being held at the Norwalk Sheriff’s Station. He is facing at least three felony charges including making terrorist threats, kidnapping, and child endangerment. Bail amount was still pending as of 4 p.m. Thursday. No one was injured and the neighborhood was reopened at around 2:30 p.m.

Stowers Elementary Magnet School of International Studies 6th grade students Andrea Viaz and Rebecca Rivera display their Hunger & World Poverty exhibit to students, teachers and family members May 27 at the school’s International Baccalaurete Exhibit. By Larry Caballero More than 600 Stowers Elementary Magnet School of International Studies students, teachers and family members enjoyed viewing more than 50 exhibits on display May 27 at their International Baccalaureate Exhibit when 5th and 6th grade students revealed the information they learned from researching global and local issues, determining the problems and coming up with possible solutions. Students were ready to discuss issues that included Women’s Rights, Preventing War, Domesticating Animals, Recycling, Water Pollution, Underage Drinking, Teen Pregnancy, Pollution, Graffiti and Global warming. Stowers 6th grade students Andrea Viaz and Rebecca Rivera distributed pamphlets to show that about 25,000
people die every day of hunger. “This is one person every three and a half seconds, and unfortunately, it is children who die most often,” said Rivera. Poverty in the United States is cyclical in nature that affects roughly 13 to 17% of Americans each year. “Poverty is a big problem in America,” said Viaz, “and we chose poverty as our issue when we learned about it from watching a documentary on child poverty.” Stowers teacher Jeff Ives was proud of the work that his students had shown in their exhibits. “We have more than 50 displays that show many of the global and local issues that affect all of us,” said Ives. “Students did their research on the internet, from books and interviewing adults who were experts in their field.”

Cerritos Sheriff's weekly crime summary Part I felony investigations were down last week to eighteen compared to twenty-four the previous one. All categories in this report were lower last week with the exception of commercial burglaries. Calls for service by patrol personnel increased from 280 to 291, which leaves the new 2011 weekly average in calls for service at 262. GREAT NEWS! There were no robberies reported during this summary period. Residential burglaries dropped from six to three last week. All three involved an open or unlocked door or window. Losses in the crimes are still pending at the time of this report. The 2011 weekly average in residential burglaries is 3.7. Remember that it takes a few short minutes to make sure that the residence is secured prior to leaving. As three victims last week know, this is a very important procedure to follow. Four commercial burglaries were investigated last week, up from two the week before. Windows were shattered and doors were pried on the closed businesses where computers, copper wire, TVs, and cash were stolen. The 2011 weekly average in “other structure”/commercial burglaries is 3.0. Vehicle burglaries decreased from eight to five. Four were in high-volume commercial parking lots, and three were SUVs. Laptop computers and wallets were taken. The new 2011 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 5.6. Any item left inside of a vehicle becomes “fair game” to the would-be thief. Items that are left in plain view are even more vulnerable and account for the majority of the cases. Vehicle
Cerritos College board appoints Jean McHatton to fill vacancy The Cerritos College Board of Trustees voted yesterday to appoint retired school administrator Jean McHatton to the seat left vacant by the death of Bob Epple. Of nine candidates to replace Epple, three were interviewed at the regular board meeting yesterday. McHatton was selected after a vote of the board, who heard from two other applicants for the empty seat. McHatton, of Cerritos, is a retired director of curriculum at Whittier Union High School District. In her presentation at the meeting, she said that student success is her priority. She also noted that her 41 years of experience as an educator will be an asset to the board as will her passion for education. McHatton is no stranger to Cerritos College. She has served on the Cerritos College Foundation Board since 1999 and the Cerritos College Citizen's Bond Oversight Committee since 2004. She also served on the college's Presidential Search Committee in 2009. Board Vice President Bob Arthur said McHatton impressed the board with her expertise in education and her many years of relationship with Cerritos College as a strong community advocate. McHatton will be sworn in at the June 15 board meeting and will serve the remainder of the term which ends in 2012.
www.loscerritosnews.net burglary is the most frequently reported crime in the City of Cerritos. Why take a chance? If your property is valuable and important to you, consider leaving it at home or taking it with you when you exit the vehicle. Vehicle thefts were down from four to three last week. Three cases occurred in high-volume commercial parking lots. Two SUVs and a Toyota were stolen. The current 2011 weekly average in this category is 2.7. Consider a steering wheel locking device that serves as a good visual deterrent regardless of what you drive. Honda and Toyota owners are more statistically prone to vehicle theft, as are SUV owners, but virtually any vehicle can be a target. Their high school seasons may have ended in late November, but there was still one more game for wide receiver Donovan Gumbs, running back Elijhaa Penny and five of their Norwalk teammates. They were part of the 44th annual 605 All-Star Football Classic, a conglomerate of seniors from high schools separated by the 605 freeway. The Norwalk contingent were on an East squad that rallied from 13 points down in the final 5:21 of regulation only to lose to the West 23-16 in overtime last Saturday night at Cerritos College. Davis and Penny would combine for eight yards on four carries on an East drive late in the first half that resulted in a punt. By halftime, the West was up 9-3 and Penny had only 11 yards on six touches as for once, he was not the main focus of a double wing set as he had been accustomed to at Norwalk. “I like both offenses,” Penny said. “But as far as splitting time with other players, it was exciting. I really enjoyed watching other guys get in.”

that drive, I think there wouldn’t be any hope [of winning]. We had to execute right then and there.” An interception by Casey Eyman of Cypress almost two minutes later gave the East new life again and Penny got the call three times, picking up 21 yards before Andrew Rosales of La Serna tied the game with a five-yard reception from his high school teammate with 79 seconds left. “Those players [on the West] were talking a little too much,” Penny chuckled. “I’m not going lie; I was taking it easy on them. I wasn’t trying to put myself at risk. In the fourth quarter, I just fired up.” However, Penny, who will showcase his talents in three months at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, gained just two yards and Buenrostro threw a pair of incomplete passes before being picked off at the goal line by Aaron Williams of Dominguez. Other area players participating in the game were Artesia wide receiver De’Veon Isreal, Gahr defensive back Steven Hoodye (two tackles) and offensive lineman Alex Zendejas, Norwalk defensive back Aaron Sanchez (one tackle), offensive lineman Dixxon Diaz and defensive lineman Toliniu Faamatau (one and a half tackles). Representing the West squad was Valley Christian defensive back Chris Binford (one and a half tackles).
Cerritos 14-Under allstars start fast, finish slow in La Habra Tournament By Loren Kopff LA HABRA-Take away the two playoff games of the two tournaments the Cerritos 14-Under all-stars have played in thus far and the team would be just about ready for the Amateur Softball Association “B” District Tournament. But that’s not how these summer tournaments are operated and the oldest of the four Cerritos all-star teams have struggled outside of pool play. After breezing past Norwalk and Downey in pool play action of last Saturday’s La Habra Field of Dreams Tournament, Cerritos hit a brick wall against West Covina in the first round of the playoffs and lost 6-4. The team

is now 0-2 in playoff games in its first two summer tournaments. Cerritos got a stellar pitching performance from Nicole Waldecker who saw Norwalk’s leadoff hitter reach on an error, then retired the next 12 batters she faced as Cerritos was never challenged in a 9-0 decision. Although Cerritos got just six hits, they were helped with four Norwalk errors and seven walks. Waldecker helped herself out in the top of the first when her groundout to short brought in Vicky Maglonzo for the first run. Luci Stefani and Haley Lamb would pick up extra base hits in the frame and Justina Peko advanced all the way around on three errors to score the third run. The game was put away in the third inning as five runs came across highlighted by a two-run triple from Ashley Mitchell. “I think with the lineup we have, we’re a good hitting team one through nine,” said manager Bill Mitchell. “I have faith in all of the girls one through nine. The way it’s set up now, I think we have a very strong team and we should do very well.” Lamb went two for two and drove in a pair as 10 of the 11 players who saw action reached base. Later in the day, Lamb threw a two-hitter over three innings as Cerritos knocked off Downey 6-2. Again, Cerritos was limited in hits-only five-but Downey committed five errors and walked three batters. Cerritos grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Stefani’s sacrifice fly. In the next inning, Kaitlyn Boggs was hit by a pitch and came home on a double from Ashley Mitchell. Cerritos put the game away in the third with four runs. But the next morning, Cerritos gave up three runs in the top of the fifth and fell to West Covina 6-4. Cerritos rallied from a 2-0 deficit to score single tallies in the bottom of the first and second. Stefani singled and came home when Lamb was safe on an error. Cerritos tied the game as Boggs, Ashley Mitchell and Maglonzo were walked before Boggs scored on an infield single from Waldecker. West Covina took a 3-2 lead in the third but that didn’t last long as Lamb, who reached on an infield hit, scored on West Covina’s third error of the game. Lamb, who replaced Waldecker in the circle to begin the top of the fifth, was touched up for three hits and three runs which proved to be the game changer. “I made the change because they were close to the middle of their lineup,” Bill Mitchell said. “They had seen Nicole three times and they hit [against] her. I thought with Haley coming in with maybe a little faster velocity
would do it.” Peko and Waldecker both had a pair of hits and despite a 3-4 summer record, the team has outscored its opponents 28-19. Cerritos will spend this weekend in the Charter Oak Tournament instead of its own tournament. Other than Cerritos, just one other 14-Under all-star team signed up for the Cerritos Tournament. “I’m a little upset because I don’t want to travel,” Bill Mitchell said. “I want to be at our home and show what we can do at home. But there’s nothing we can do. They didn’t have enough teams sign up and I do want to play. Hopefully Charter Oak will give up a good tune-up for districts and that’s what these tournaments are for.” Elsewhere in the Field of Dreams Tournament, the 8-Under all-stars blanked Charter Oak 2-0 and fell to West Grove 5-1 in pool play action before losing to La Habra 4-3 in the playoffs despite leading 3-0. Against Charter Oak, both runs were scored in the bottom of the third on a bases loaded walk issued to Tristan Hess and an infield single from Gemma Bulthuis. That would be the only hit for Cerritos as Charter Oak walked five batters. The 10-Under all-stars, fresh off of winning the San Dieguito Memorial Day Tournament, tied Charter Oak 2-2 and lost to Long Beach/Heartwell 4-3 in pool play action. But in the playoffs, the team rolled to victories over La Habra (11-4), Chino (11-1) and La Mirada before having its championship game with West Grove rained out. The 12-Under all-stars crushed La Habra 11-1 and Long Beach/Heartwell 8-1 in pool play action, then breezed

by La Habra again 8-1 before losing to Charter Oak 4-2. Against Long Beach/ Heartwell, Cerritos scored six runs in the top of the first to set the tone. Celeste Borza and Brianna Spoolstra each drove in a pair of runs in the frame as 10 different players had one base hit. Cerritos outscored its two pool play opponents 11-0 in the first inning.
Cerritos Swag places second at tournament The Cerritos 10u All Star team, better known as Cerritos Swag, took their championship play to La Habra this past weekend. Swag opened up the tournament in pool play against Charter Oak. This game turned out to be a heavily contested game with great pitching and solid defense from both teams. The game ended in a 2-2 tie as Swag had to steal home twice to get their only runs. Saturday morning did not get any easier for Swag as they faced Long Beach, playing for a second seed in bracket play. Swag jumped out to a 3-1 lead due to some timely hitting and great pitching by Diamond Sandoval. But the lead evaporated in the 5th inning as some errors helped Long Beach claim the lead and ultimately win 4-3. The loss to Long Beach placed Swag as a 4th seed. Once bracket play began Swag had an easy go with the first two games as their offense proved to be too much for La Habra where they won 11-4 and then beat Chino 11-1. Their next game was against La Mirada in the semi finals. La Mirada just came off of a win against Long Beach. Swag’s

3rd baseman, Cassie Oravetz, made her presence felt as she single handedly shut down La Mirada’s attempt at small ball. This allowed Swag’s pitcher, Afi Satele, to dominate the game by keeping the batters off balance and ultimately lead to a victory of 5-1 and placing Swag in the championship against West Grove. Swag ended up losing 1-0 to West Grove in the Championship as the game was ended prematurely in the 6th inning due to rain. But all during the game highlight type plays were being made by Dejanae Davis who caught a ball in center field and doubled up a runner who was on second, or Jasmine Hill’s play at short stop. Next up for Swag is the Cerritos Girls Softball Association’s Tournament that they will be hosting this weekend at the Sports Complex.
