By Paul Robbins Editor’s Note: The late LCCN news reporter Paul Robbins originally wrote the following in 1998. With Hawaiian Gardens moving into the 21st century and with new residents moving into the city, it was felt the story of one of the city’s major benefactors should be told once again. LCCN staff has updated it. Maybe if Irving Moskowitz, MD has become a professional baseball player, as he almost did, some of the controversary surrounding his name would never have happened. Perhaps there would be no newspaper accounts accusing him of causing insurrection in Israel by promoting settlements in East Jerusalem and on the West Bank, or of having influenced city elections in Hawaiian Gardens. And maybe, there would be no Hawaiian Gardens at all. Former Hawaiian Gardens Mayor [See MOSKOWITZ Page 10]

The Cerritos City Council approved a planning commission recommendation prohibiting the establishment of medical marijuana dispensaries in the city. In his report to the council, Management Analyst Ryan Cary said this means any business facility or location, whether fixed or mobile, where medical marijuana is made available to or distributed by or distributed to one or more of the following: a primary caregiver, a qualified patient, or a patient with an identification card. The Cerritos All Stars posted four shutouts in four games against all star competition and are now one of four squads from nearly 200 statewide that will compete for the California crown on Sunday, March 13 at the Chapman Sports Complex in Garden Grove. ABCUSD faces drastic classroom cuts if tax extension is not approved by voters

By Jerry Bernstein Under pressure from the Los Angeles County Board of Education, ABCUSD must come up with two budget scenarios for the 2011-12 fiscal year and two subsequence years. This is part of the second interim budget report required by the state. Members of the ABC school board discussed the two budgets at its Feb. 22 meeting, one that could lead to closing two schools and limit programs to the classroom only. Budget “A” is based on the assumption a proposed tax extension will be placed on the ballot and approved by the people, resulting in no additional cuts in funding for education. Budget “B”

would assume the proposed tax extensions would not be approved resulting in new education cuts that would force drastic reductions in the ABC school program, including layoffs. The Governor’s proposed budget includes $12 billion in revenues. The tax extension he is urging voters to approve in a special election in June includes Personal Income Tax, Sales Tax, Vehicle License Fee and Department Exemption Credit for five more years. In addition the Governor proposed $12.5 billion in cuts and $1.9 billion in other funding/ borrowing. If the legislature approves the special election and if the voters reject the tax extension, “Budget B” may be implemented. School Board President Maynard Law said the District would be facing a $10 million shortfall for the next fiscal year. “Unfortunately we can’t print money like the federal government can. Nor can we use trickery to balance our budget similar to what the state legislature has been doing for the past few years. We have to approve a balanced budget.” He said ABC still has a worldclass education system and the Board’s goal is to maintain it. Superintendent Dr. Gary Smuts said Plan “A” means we have to close a $3.5 million deficit. Plan B means we will have to close a $10 million deficit in ABC. He said, “We have listed some $17 million in options. Those are simply brainstorming ideas. Some of them would be great challenges for us to implement.” Dr. Smuts said the Board has has cut some $30 million from the budget during the past five years when it should have received approximately $46 million in statutory funding.”

Artesia Council proclaims March Safe Communities Month

The Artesia City Council presented a proclamation naming the month of March as Safe Communities Month at its Feb. 14 meeting to Sheriff Sgt. Gregory Knapp. Upon making the presentation Mayor Victor Manalo said Artesia citizens must be made aware to protect themselves, families, neighbors and co-workers from being harmed by drugs, violence and other crimes and must unite to create a safe, healthy, crime free environment. Knapp thanked the mayor and reminded the community the sheriff department will hold its Public Safety Expo on Mar. 12 Artesia Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. He said there would be Fire and police demonstrations including a Bicycle show. Helicopter landing, and a K-9 dog demonstration. He said if anyone is interested in participating in the Block Captain program they should contact him at Expo. He said, "We have involved all employee groups, PTA Counsel etc." We are seeking information and providing information,” he asserted. “Simply continuing the way we are, we are taking millions of dollars from our employees in lost wages and COLA and our school year is smaller. In addition class size has been increasing.” He said, “We cannot take those sacrifices for granted. We have no choice but to present a balance budget.” He said under Plan “B” the money the state would give ABC would only permit

the “core” classroom experience. AFT President Laura Rico said she was speaking for all the District’s unions, pledging they will continue to work with the administration. However, she warned the union members cannot carry much more of this burden on their backs. Board members appealed to the community at large to contact their legislators in Sacramento and urge them to [See ABCUSD Page 7]

CANDIDATE STATEMENTS Q: Would you be in favor of establishing a Rose Parade Float Association (non-profit) to raise funds for the city’s float in the Rose Parade?

F

irst, I would like to point out that participating in the Rose Parade is a great experience and opportunity for our Bruce Barrows residents to volunteer for something they identify with. On a business level the advertising value for the city is unequaled in any other method. Everyone knows it's very difficult to quantify the return on the investment made by our City to participate, but by every standard we could find, it did provide a beneficial return. Our decision to drop our participation was based on economics. The declining revenue, due to the recession and our desire to continue to fund services and programs within the city were the main reasons we terminated the

Rose Parade Float. A secondary issue and a main one for me was the council decision to use our City Manager and senior staff to seek donations from our business, who must get their license and become involved in other negotiations. I felt this was a conflict of interest and couldn't support it. Last, our attempt to raise funds from our residents failed. With all that said, should a group of residents/businesses seek to establish a non-profit to raise funds for a city Rose Parade Float, I would support it. I don't feel, in todays economy, the city should be funding a parade float. Sincerely, Bruce Barrows www.reelectbrucebarrows.com

was FIRST to propose forming a Cerritos Rose Association – five years ago. I subsequently called for a Rose Association Chris Fuentes (like many cities have) when serving on the Fine Arts Commission. Had the Council acted then, we wouldn’t have had to suspend Rose Parade participation and would’ve saved Millions! How will I pay for my proposals to; Increase Library Hours/Programs, Adaptive Recreation Programs, Free Youth Sports Lighting, Upgrade Tree Pruning, Better Maintenance Citywide, Fix Crumbling Arterial Walls WITHOUT foisting the cost onto homeowners? The answer: CUT WASTEFUL SPENDING; •Stop PAYING our City Council. I estimate Council Salary, Lifetime Medical, Pension, etc. @ $3,500/month. •Acknowledge/Deal With MultiMillion Dollar ANNUAL LOSS at the Performing Arts Center (17 Years = $100,000,000 Loss!) •End Unnecessary Corporate Subsidies. •Curb Inflated Executive Compensation/Staff ($500K+ City Manager) Does Cerritos need TWO High-Paid Assistant City Managers? •Downsize COW “Ghost Bus” replace with low-cost, clean-air, van shuttles. •END Council/Commission fancy City-PAID pre-meeting dinners (Roast PORK @ $75K+/Year). Inevitably city business is directly/indirectly discussed, violating The Brown Act http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_Act a law that insures public business is conducted in public. Commissioners routinely thank Staff as though they are treating when WE are picking up the tab! • Cut Up City Credit Cards, Expense Accounts, Cell Phones and Car Allowances – pay for AUDITED city-business mileage/expenses ONLY. One MONEY PIT has been the Mag Lev High-Speed Rail project, the hobby of ONE city councilmember -NOT supported by California’s High-Speed Rail Authority, MTA or OCTD. than first meets the eye. For example, what happens in years that the Association cannot raise enough money to cover the cost of the float? This is quite an important question because the number of slots open each year to floats in the Parade is fixed (at about 50); not every organization wishing to have a float in the Parade can be accommodated. Since priority is given to previous participants, it is important to send a float to the Parade every year if we wish to have a float in the Parade. A couple of years ago we started a fund to give residents the opportunity to donate private funds to offset the cost of the float. The fund raised about $10,000, which is a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of a typical float of about $250,000. We did not do too much to promote private donations, as promoting means spending money. I am a big fan of the City having a Rose Parade Float. I believe a float is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together to coalesce around a common goal. In the past, when I have decorated the float, I have seen an entire cross section of our community participating in the float decoration--from high school students to senior citizens , and everybody in between. This is why I have consistently voted against the elimination of the Rose Parade Float. Last year, the decision to eliminate the float was 3-2, with me and councilmember Edwards voting to keep the float (Councilmember Edwards has endorsed me, and although Mayor Pro Tem Laura Lee did not vote with me in this one vote, she has endorsed my re-election). In the past (before I was elected to the city council) we have spent upwards of $500,000 on a Rose Parade Float. I don't believe we need the Rolls Royce of Rose Parade Floats to bring the community together. A simple run of the mill float would do the job. If you agree with me, please consider voting for me on March 8. If you don't agree with me, I hope that like Mayor Pro Tem Laura Lee, you too will find other issues (see previous columns) to give me one of your three votes on March 8.

would be in favor of it. I was a little disappointed with not participating in the Rose Parade because it had been the city’s annual showcase since Grace Hu 2002. But with financial crisis up ahead, we simply cannot afford to build the Rose Parade Float. There are more pressing issues right now such as balancing the budget, keeping our reserves and monitoring our expenditures. It would not be a fiscally sound decision to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on the Rose Parade Float at this time. That is why this would be a good of time as any for a Rose Parade Float Association. The money can be raised from residents’ donations, company sponsors, etc. I believe an association that would raise money and have residents pitch in and participate in building our own float would actually be more rewarding to our residents and would bring this community much closer.

es, I am in favor of having Rose Parade Float. The City should and would contribute appropriate share + Harshod Mody private fund raising to fulfill obligation. I support fully to have non-profit Association for Rose Parade Float. As a Council Member I will look for PRIVATE party ( Organization or Company ) to support Rose Parade Float. I have several Company's in mind who will support Rose Parade Float. Every Year will find NEW supporter and at least THREE of them lineup for coming years. We need new OUTLOOK in our approach. Rose Parade Float is PRIDE and LEGACY of City of Cerritos. I still wonder how incompetent council members of 2009/2010 failed to perform. it's shame that Incumbents Council members talks about everything but not about Rose Parade Float. Is it not challenged to intelligent Society of City of Cerritos? Seating council members can collect thousands of dollars for their Election Campaign but not for Rose Parade Float? What a shame! As a Council Member of City of Cerritos I pledge if I can not support by heart and soul Rose Parade float than I shall be not hesitate to resign from my position. I am looking forward for same COMMITMENT from all Candidates.. I will dedicate my efforts to raise funds. The City is given away thousands and Thousands of Dollars to keep businesses in TOWN. this campaign, what makes Cerritos a great city is our neighborhoods, our parks, and our Mark Pulido schools. The City must get back to basics and focus on protecting the quality of life of our neighborhoods. That requires the City Council to ask the tough questions and find ways to do more with less. It means that councilmembers must be fiscally responsible while focusing on the priorities that are important to the residents of Cerritos. I will provide new leadership on the City Council, just as I have proven for the past 9 years during my service on the ABC School Board. During these difficult financial times, I have helped our school district balance its budget without laying off any permanent employees, while preserving our art, music, athletics and after-school programs and keeping our class sizes low. We have implemented higher academic standards, and even as we face on-going difficult budget times, the school district's test scores are at an alltime high -- ABC's Academic Performance Index (API) score is 822! While we have put the focus on the classroom, I also recognize that we must re-invest in our infrastructure. On the School Board, I pushed for new computers and technology in every one of our district's 29 schools. We also upgraded the infrastructure of our schools, including brand new playground equipment at every elementary school. We need this same commitment from our city, re-investing in our infrastructure, our streets, sidewalks and city trees. Finally, the school district and the city must maintain a strong working partnership. On the school board, I have worked to collaborate with the city to support joint facilities and to ensure the safety of our students. As your city councilmember, I will continue to work

he city float gives the city recognition as a fun loving city of creative people. It also gives the city a sense of pride at national scene if not at international. The cost of such Kiran Rami participation is high and is getting higher every year. In tough economic times the float could be cost prohibitive. One has to weigh such expenses against city's pressing priorities. If the residents want the rose parade float, it may be built by either (a) sponsor or sponsors bankrolling entire (or partially) or (b) a non-profit community organization arranging the float built by locals.

It’s not uncommon for trees and tree limbs to fall, especially during high winds, rain and other stormy conditions. This can cause power lines to fall as well. If you see a power line on the ground, stay far away and keep others away as well. Do not try to touch or remove it. That power line may still be energized and can be deadly to touch or go near.

Call 9-1-1 and report the situation immediately. Also keep away from trees that have power lines going through them. When a power line touches a tree, the tree may also become energized.

Asked about Cuesta Villas and the district’s plans to move out of its present quarters, Dr. Smuts said the city of Cerritos, through its Redevelopment Agency will give the District $5 million. The money will be use to remodel the new administration building on 166th Street and pay the cost of moving. He said hopefully the District would be in its new quarters by the Winter Break of our next school year. He noted that because of the raids on the city’s redevelopment funds during the past two years, the implementation of the agreement would be done in phases. Hawaiian Gardens Mayor Mike Gomez reminded the Board of his city’s

The Council also turned down a request that a traffic single be placed at the intersection of Carmenita Road and Ashworth Place on the grounds traffic volume did not warrant it. Residents told the council it is very difficult to get out on Carmenita from Ashwood. Assistant City Engineer Kanna Kellam said the analysis conducted by staff does not support the need for additional traffic control devices at the intersection. The Council approved the launching of a Cerritos GIS web-based mapping tool on the city website for use by and availability to the general public. Planning Manager Robert Lopez, explained that

He said for the past two years the city has paid for summer school programs for the schools in Hawaiian Gardens and at its meeting that night donated $5,000 to Melbourne Elementary School and $5,000 to Fedde Middle School. He urged the board not to cut the after school programs if possible. “Our children need these programs as part of their education. Dr. Smuts said the average contributions to students in the rest of the country are $3,000 per student more than California students receive. He said, “We cannot do business as usual. “We’re at a point, a crisis point, and we will do the best we can. He asked the public for their ideas and comment. GIS is a technology-based discipline that was developed to aid in the acquisition of specialized information on an assortment of project-related variables and to assist in making important decisions regarding the feasibility, effectiveness and impact of projects through the use of geographic cartographic and planning principals. It is also used in urban planning, geography, landscape architecture, engineering, city clerk and community safety, to quickly track changes in the environment, observe trends and study potential impact of proposed developments. Kellam said the new tool, dubbed Cerritos CIS, is home grown and will provide users the ability to conduct property information searches based on a variety of query types such as zoning, address, Assessor’s Parcel Number, and other land use information. He said Cerritos GIS will provide the public access to filtered, non-sensitive information by way of various data layers regarding land use, zoning and the location of public assets. The Council also approved a contract to Harper & Associates Engineering, Inc. of Corona for professional potable water diving services to clean the city’s C-2 reservoir east at 16540 Marquardt Ave. in the amount of $15,500. The reservoir was built in 1978 by DYK Company and last inspected in April 2010. It was last cleaned in March 1994.

Ralph Cesena said, “Dr. Moskowitz kept the doors to city hall open.” Many residents don’t care much about housing projects on the West Bank, or even about the politics behind the construction of the casino. Their main interest is to have enough food to eat and a job to pay their rent. Former Mayor Petra Prida said almost every resident in the city has benefited to some degree from the Moskowitz Foundation. Prida worked at the Hawaiian Gardens Food Bank, which serves more than12,000 people a month. Almost all the food is paid for by the Irving Moskowitz Foundation, which has been funding the food bank for nearly 40 years. Besides the Food Bank, the Moskowitz Foundation has funded a dental clinic, a senior’s nutrition program, and numerous youth programs, such as Little League and Pop Warner football programs. This past year alone, the Moskowitz Foundation donations included $10,000 to Head Start, $3,000 to Camp Pivika, and has donated a total of $1.5 million toward the Sports Complex currently under construction at Fedde Middle School. Many people in the city don’t know about the many charitable work Moskowitz has done anonymously. In 1996, for example, a fire killed five of six children. Dr. Moskowitz paid for the burials and gave away about $1,500 in smoke alarms for any family in Hawaiian Gardens who wanted one. He has also provided scholarships to Long Beach State University without fanfare. What motivates this man who lives in Miami Beach, Florida might be found in his upbringing. According to Moskowitz he comes from the same background, the same people. “I come from a poor, close-knit religious family. Obviously the religion is different, but everything else, especially the poverty, is the same.” Tri City Medical Center That Hawaiian Gardens became the beneficiary of Moskowitz’s charitable activity is strictly a matter of chance. “My barber, who doubled as a part-time real

estate broker, told me about some property in Southern California where I could build a hospital,” Moskowitz recalled. “He told me it would be a great spot because of easy access to the freeway.” That was in 1968. When he researched the surrounding area, he decided this was the right spot for a hospital. Moskowitz saw a sociological study of Hawaiian Gardens done at Cal State University, Long Beach. It talked about kids going to school on empty stomachs, and people driving several miles at all hours to get medical attention. That is if they could find a car in the first place. Moskowitz recognized the additional need Hawaiian Gardens residents had beyond what local government could provide What is now Tri City Regional Medical Center was built in 1972, and with it a 39 –year legacy of charitable work in Hawaiian Gardens provided by the Moskowitz Foundation. “Our first question was, “How do we staff the new hospital,” he recalled. The answer was to staff it with Hawaiian Gardens residents, thus creating several hundred jobs.In 1988 Moskowitz read a newspaper story about the imminent closure of the Bingo Club. So the Moskowitz Foundation took over the club and donates a large percentage of the proceeds to Hawaiian Gardens charitable organizations. Most city officials, when asked about Moskowitz’s involvement in Israel, will answer “It’s his money and he has a right to do with it what he wants.” As to allegations that Moskowitz influenced a city council election to ensure a majority for the casino, Bob Steins said, “Those charges were made by one person and were never substantiated.” According to Steins, former Mayor Kathy Nevajas was originally a proponent of the casino, but changed her mind when Moskowitz did not select her to run a public relations campaign to promote the idea of a casino in the city to residents who resisted the idea of a casino based on the belief it could add to the city’s crime problem at the time. “She [Nevajas] supported the Bicycle

Club and the Commerce Club casinos in neighboring cities in their campaign to fight a new casino in Hawaiian Gardens,” he said. “Those clubs paid for lawyers to call for a referendum on the casino. Moskowitz has been accused of using foundation money to fund settlements in Israel. The accusation Moskowitz admits is true. “What you don’t understand is the foundation was established 20 years before his involvement in Hawaiian Gardens,” he said. “It was originally set up to help Jewish people everywhere.” A Polish Jew, Moskowitz was 11 when the Germans rolled into Warsaw. “Before then his parents would read letters they received from Europe about his family, weddings and so forth, he recalled. Then everything stopped. The family could only wait and hope. Then a cousin came home. She was the only family member to escape. She said she hid in the woods and watched the Nazis machine gun everyone in the village. Moskowitz said later they heard that 1.5 million children has been killedjust for being Jewish. The Moskowitz foundation helped provide housing when Israel took in a wave of Russian Jews. Science and education has led his Foundation to help support the Weizman Institute and Bar Ilan University as well as several hospitals. The Red Cross has given the Foundation an award for its sending money to nations in crises. That Moskowitz did not become a major league player is also a matter of chance. He said he received a letter of acceptance to medical school about the time another kid on his block got a minor league contract. Moskowitz, who himself had been offered contracts to the Chicago and Cleveland organizations. “Then suddenly he came back in the middle of summer, when he should have been playing ball. It turned out he’d been injured and couldn’t play. Moskowitz chose medicine, and baseball lost what might have been a great hitter. But then Hawaiian Gardens might have lost a benefactor.

Cerritos Towne Center undergoing a makeover The Cerritos Towne Center is currently being upgraded with new lighting, landscaping, signage and seating areas. To date, the existing main pedestrian entrance paseo, which includes two rows of palm trees lining a concrete walkway, has been improved by the addition of greenscreen structures encasing the palm trees. The structures support climbing vines and new bowl light sconces. Portions of the existing paseo concrete pavement will be replaced with stamped concrete with a flagstone finish. A new fireplace has been installed adjacent to the outdoor patio seating area of Arté Café. The three-sided fireplace allows access from the private patio and the public plaza area, and features protective screening and a decorative stacked rock veneer. The existing fencing around the café has been reconfigured to complement the new fireplace. On the public plaza side of the fireplace, a new seating area includes durable outdoor furniture, potted plants and specialty paving. A similar seating area is located at the northerly end of the plaza near the movie theater. The outdoor seating areas are being upgraded with two permanent shade canopy structures (one for each area). One canopy has been installed and installation of the second canopy is under way. The canopies include decorative metal panels and will support suspended fans for additional cooling as well as gas heaters to replace the pole-mounted heaters. The perimeters of the new seating areas will be enhanced with new illuminated garden lanterns at the entrances and new paving to match the paseo flagstone finish. New grade-level planter areas with horsetail bamboo will create a decorative hedge around the seat-

ing areas. The existing planters throughout the fountain plaza and store frontage areas will also be enlarged. Graphic signage including a combination of lifestyle images, abstract art and images from current movies will be installed throughout the central plaza (content subject to City approval). Existing tenant identification signs and theater information signage will also be upgraded. The existing fountain will be restored and upgraded with new jets and nozzles to achieve greater motion and interest. The upgrades are expected to be completed within the next few months.

Lazy Dog Cafe opens in March at the Los Cerritos Center As part of the Los Cerritos Center’s expansion project, a 7,489-square-foot Lazy Dog Cafe will be opening at the mall in March. The Lazy Dog Cafe at Los Cerritos Center will be the eighth location of the Southern California concept restaurant. “Cerritos GIS” web-based mapping tool now available The City of Cerritos recently launched a web-based mapping tool called “Cerritos GIS.” The tool was developed by City staff and offers 24-hour access to the City’s land use and property information. The tool can be accessed at www.cerritosgis.com. GIS (Geographic Information System) uses computer technology to visually present geographic information. When the site is first launched, the image in the large frame is a zoning map of the entire City of Cerritos. The frame at the top offers various tools, including a street magnifier that can be moved around; a measure tool that can calculate perimeter, area and distance; a print tool that offers multiple printing options; and more. One of the tools allows multiple properties to be selected at once, allowing for comparisons. Businesses looking to re-locate to Cerritos can easily see the different zones in the City to determine their potential location options. On the left-side of the screen, users can turn a variety of layers on and off. The Art in Public Places layer shows all of the public art pieces in Cerritos. Clicking on an art piece brings up a detailed description, along with a link to the art piece page on the City’s main website, www.cerritos.us. There are also layers for land use, parks, transit bus stops, and more. The search function allows users to search for a property by street address or Assessor’s Parcel Number. When a user begins typing a street address or number, the system will automatically populate a list of possible properties. Clicking on a property address will bring up a detailed description of the proper-

ty and an enlarged image of the location. The left-side pane includes links to the Cerritos Municipal Code related to that property zone as well as a link to the Los Angeles Assessor’s website. Users can click to open a PDF assessor map and view entitlement history including parcel map, conditional use permit and precise plan approvals. From the specific property page, users can export the map as an image file or print a detailed report using the “Property report” button. The aerial button will show you an aerial photo of the selected property. “Cerritos GIS” provides public access to filtered, non-sensitive information, and new features and layers will be added in the future.

City Ombudsman offers assistance for businesses Businesses interested in remodeling or making improvements are encouraged to call the City’s Ombudsman Metré Anthony regarding the permit and approval process. The company creates high-end original equipment manufacture (OEM) products for a very well-respected, national appliance company. In 2001, Cantal was the recipient of the Art Theobald Award, the highest honor given by the American Society of Gas Engineers. The company celebrated its 10th anniversary in December 2010. Dante Cantal said: “In 2002 Twin Eagles started looking for a bigger building to accommodate its growing business. A commercial building located in Cerritos had just become available and it had all the required manufacturing necessities. The Cerritos manufacturing site is strategically located to provide better access to major transportation arteries, plenty of skilled labor and a safe and pleasant environment. In 2003, Twin Eagles moved from Anaheim to the City of Cerritos.” Twin Eagles, Inc. is located at 13231 East 166th Street in Cerritos. They may not be the same Artesia Pioneers who won consecutive California Interscholastic Federation state championships, but the 2010-2011 team is making a new name for itself. Five players scored in double figures as the Pioneers upset 10th ranked Rio Mesa 69-53 last Friday night at home in a Southern Section Division III-A contest.. The win came two days after the team posted a 47-45 road victory at seventh ranked Palm Desert. That win was the first playoff victory since Artesia won the state championship in 2007. Moments after the game, Artesia head coach Greg Taylor said this was the biggest win he has had in his three seasons at the school. “Having the seven guys who were dedicated in the offseason, not being able to go five on five unless the coaches play, Santiago’s car accident…everything we’ve been through, the guys wanted this so bad,” Taylor said. “They really put their bodies on the line to get a W.” Taylor was referring to junior Santiago Fajardo who was injured around Thanksgiving and wasn’t expected to return to the team until close to the playoffs. Fajardo, who is the team’s returning scorer from last season, scored 10 points, grabbed five rebounds and had three steals against the Spartans. Rio Mesa led only once in the game, at 5-4, but stayed within striking distance the entire first half. After a bucket from junior Brandon Hunt late in the first quarter, the Pioneers had capped off a 6-0 run to lead 18-10. With 5:11 left in the half, Rio

Mesa’s Dillon West tied the game at 24-24 before the hosts scored the next five points and began to distance themselves from the champions of the Pacific View League. West led the Spartans with 18 points as the Pioneers were keeping their leading scorer, Joseph Soto in check. Soto was averaging 19 points a game but Artesia limited him to 10 points on four of 19 shooting from the field. “We knew that [West] was going to score and I didn’t even know what he looked like,” Taylor said. “I felt like that even if he got his [points], as long as we took care of Soto, we would still be okay.” Fajardo paced the Pioneers in the third quarter, scoring six of his team’s 10 points and his steal plus subsequent basket with 52 seconds left ignited an 8-0 run. With 2:47 remaining in the game, senior Micah Kahawaii scored the team’s last field goal to increase the lead to 59-46. After that, the team was 10 of 14 from the line. Kahawaii led Artesia with 17 points and eight rebounds while Hunt scored 12 point. Senior Patrick Hart also added 10 points but probably the biggest contributor was senior Tyren Harrison, who came off the bench to score 13 points and collect seven rebounds. “That’s what he does,” Taylor said. “He knows where to be and he jumps maybe six inches off the floor. But he gets himself into position and he’s real good of just putting it right back up quick.” Artesia would fall to second ranked Crespi 70-42 this past Tuesday night on the road and finishes its season at 14-14, the best since going 33-2 in the 2006-2007 season.

son at 14-13, the third winning campaign in the last four seasons. “This was the most prepared I’ve had a team, honestly, and we had three great days of practices,” Drake said. “They looked like they were ready to play but you never know what’s inside someone. Pressure does a lot and pressure is what beat them tonight.” After sophomore Cristina Batarse came off the bench to score off of her offensive rebound almost two minutes into the game, the Lancers trailed 4-3. But then the 10th ranked Saxons went on a 18-0 run that lasted until 1:33 remained in the half when senior Giselle Sanchez converted on the first of two free throws she would hit over the next 38 seconds. The only other field goal the Lady Lancers would make (they went two of 37 from the field) came with 3:14 left in the third quarter, also from Batarse off of another offensive rebound. The running clock wasn’t employed until 7:06 remained in the game with the second place representatives from the Pioneer League leading 48-8. “Our team can’t step up and play at a higher level,” Drake said. “We’re not ready for primetime. That’s not a putdown on the kids. It’s just that it’s very difficult to get kids who have not played a lot of basketball and then when they go to the playoffs, they’re right off the bat playing a team who probably has been playing six, seven, eight, nine years of basketball, depending upon how old [they are].” Senior Jazman DeLaRosa came off the bench to pull down eight rebounds while sophomore Maiya Griffin-McNair added six boards and four steals. CIF BOYS AND GIRLS SOCCER PLAYOFFS

Lady Dons give Cypress a scare, fall in final seconds of overtime By Loren Kopff CYPRESS-The odds were heavily stacked against the Cerritos girls soccer team last Thursday in the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division III playoffs. The Lady Dons were facing ninth ranked Cypress, on a smaller field, and without senior defender Jessica Sunio, who was on the other side of the country at a school function. Cerritos, which was looking for its first playoff victory since 1997, was also facing a team primarily consisting of Cypress Futbol Club players, whose assistant program director, Nicole Woiemberghe, is also the Cypress High head coach. But the Lady Dons shook all of that adversity off and rallied for a late second half goal before succumbing in stoppage time of overtime 2-1. “It just goes to show we’re a young team,” said Cerritos head coach Victoria Lathrop. “Unfortunately as much leadership and experience as we do have, our inability to finish games and finish them well without having to end up in a tie or anything like that…we have a lot of work still to do.” Cerritos (12-5-2) was totally outplayed by the Centurions, managing six shots in the game. But the real story was not the lack offense from the Suburban League’s third place representative. It was the valiant effort from senior goalkeeper Erin Sagubo who time after time thwarted hard Cypress shots to keep the game at a manageable level. Cypress peppered the shortest player on the field 16 times in regulation and nine more in a little more than 20 minutes of overtime, coming up with 10 saves. Without most of those saves, the game could have easily turned into a rout. But with seconds winding down towards a potential penalty kick situation which would decide the game, Amanda Lillicrop scored on a rebound at the right post in which Sagubo couldn’t catch up with. “I give Erin a ton of credit today,” Lathrop said. “She’s a senior who is in her first her in the goal ever. Without her, it would have been a blowout. All of the credit goes to Erin, definitely.” Emma Pridmore, one of the club players for Cypress, had a goal in the 23rd min-

Junior midfielder Jose Garcia made it 3-0 in stoppage time with his third goal of the season and first since Dec. 21. The Suburban League champions and fifth ranked team in the division took nine shots on goal in the first half opposite just three from the Normans. Artesia (17-4-4) took five more shots in the second half, the last coming in the 87th minute when senior forward Jesus Mejia notched his ninth tally of the season. But the hosts, courtesy of Hailey Griffith, finally found the back of the net seven minutes before halftime. Lathrop said her team’s lack of offense was a result of not being able to connect in the middle and not being able to distribute the ball. She added that the team played scared in the first half. Also, with Sunio unavailable, that meant senior midfielder Bianca Frontino, who was second on the team with 17 goals, was summoned to patrol the defense. “Moving Bianca in the back was a huge help,” Lathrop said. “We talked about it yesterday and she said, ‘yeah, I’ll do it’. Could things have been different if we had Jessica? Sure. But for what we had today, Bianca was another senior who stepped up and took a leadership role and did her job.” In the 52nd minute, sophomore forward Connie Caliz was high on a free kick and in the 67th minute, a shot by Griffith hit the crossbar. One minute later, the Lady Dons tied the game on the 15th goal of the season from sophomore midfielder Analisa Marquez. Then, in stoppage time, an attempt from senior midfielder Paige Larkin from the left side barely went over the right corner of the net. “I told them on the bus when we got here, before we got off, that I would be proud no matter what,” Lathrop said. “I told them for those who will be returning next year, this is two years in a row we’ve been here. Maybe the third time’s the charm to get past the first round. They have nowhere to go but up.”

BOYS DIVISION IV Artesia 4, Beverly Hills 0 Sophomore defender Alejandro Martinez put the game away with a pair of goals in the first eight minutes last Friday in this rain soaked first round game. It was the first time the Pioneers had advanced to the second round since the 2005-2006 season when Artesia went to the quarterfinals. “We’ve worked hard to get to this

SOCCER from page 1 Huntington Beach All Stars and a hard fought 1-0 victory against the powerful Lakewood All Stars to go along with a nil-nil draw against the Santee All Stars from San Diego County. Two wins and a draw earned the Cerritos girls the top spot in the group and a place in the championship game. In the final game, the Cerritos All Stars controlled the action right from the start and cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win over the Tustin All Stars. The Cerritos defense was outstanding during the entire tournament marshaled by central defender Summer Jordan and the decisive play of Cerritos residents Kaylie Mota and Karen Malacon. Ariel Burns dominated the right side of the defense, while Justine Vitug turned away every challenge on the left. Goalkeeper Eileen Garcia made two crucial saves against South Huntington Beach when the game was still up for grabs. She also made the save of the tournament when she blocked a penalty kick against the Lakewood stars. Cerritos’ Vanessa Marguez was the team’s leading scorer in the tournament with four goals, including the first two in the championship game. Her other two scores came against S. Huntington Beach with Madison Wells also scoring twice in that game. The goal of the tournament, however, went to Cerritos resident Rebecca Hobson, whose goal against Lakewood in the final minute of the contest sent her team to the championship game. In the final, Hobson’s terrific speed gave Tustin trouble on the left side of the attack, as she created several scoring opportunities. One of those led to a cor-

ner kick in which Juliana Orozco found Vanessa Marquez all alone in the penalty area for the first goal of the game. The two hooked up again at the start of the second half with Marquez once again putting away another of Orozco’s nicely placed corner kicks. Just a few minutes later, Rubi Vazquez dribbled through the heart of the Tustin defense before finishing the play with an unstoppable shot to make it 3-0. Cerritos resident Vijaya George completed the score by slotting home a well placed cross by Madison Wells. The Cerritos All Stars’ midfield also enjoyed an outstanding tournament, as Erika Lizarraga made several sharp runs from the right wing to pressure the opposition, while Cheyenne Avila and Serrina Terrazas-Lopez provided strong defensive support, especially in the Lakewood game, while joining the attack when needed. The Cerritos All Stars reached the Section 11 playoffs after winning the Area Tournament with five wins from six games against All Star teams from Cypress, Los Alamitos, W. Garden Grove, Garden Grove, Whittier and La Habra. On the way to making it to the California State Championships, the Cerritos All Stars posted seven shutouts in 10 games. Several of these All Star players will have a rare opportunity to win two AYSO state titles in the same year, as their Cerritos “Firecrackers” team will also play for the regular season state title on March 12 at Garden Grove. Sign-ups for the Cerritos Region 54 Fall 2011 season will take place in the summer. For more information visit the region’s internet site at www.ayso54.org.
