proposed ordinance that will raise the single family residential monthly fee for the collection and disposal of garbage from the existing $22.01 to $22.71 effective July 1, 2013 was approved 4 to 1 for second reading by the Artesia City Council during its regular meeting of May 13, 2013 For mobile home park units, the increase is from $19.72 to $20.35. The proposed 3.17% increase in residential garbage collection represents comes on top of the previous increase rate that took effect two years ago in 2011. “The rate changes

La Palma Welcomes Sale of BP Carson to Tesoro By Brian Hews publisher@cerritosnews.net
F
or the past fifteen years, La Palma has benefited from the receipt of significant sales tax revenue from BP’s fuel sales group being located within the City. Then BP announced it was selling to Tesoro and could possibly move. The City learned this week that State and Federal authorities have cleared the way for the purchase of British Petroleum’s (BP’s) Carson refinery by Tesoro Corporation of Texas. The transfer will be effective June 1, 2013. In February, the City approved an operating agreement with Tesoro to locate offices within La Palma. City Manager Ellen Volmert said, “Approval of the sale to Tesoro is very good news for the City. The City welcomes Tesoro and looks forward to a long-term and
positive working relationship, just like the City had with BP.” Kamela Harris, the State Attorney General reports that Tesoro has agreed to preserve California jobs, help protect consumers from gas price spikes, and require environmental retrofitting of the state’s largest oil refinery. Harris had sought to preserve jobs and protect the environment in the agreement. The San Antonio company said that employees of BP’s Carson refinery and Tesoro’s smaller Wilmington refinery would have their jobs protected for two years. But others were not so lucky. BP -Arco

Re: Wedding appeared in 1968 edition of Lamplighter
Dear Editor,
A
Dear Editor of the La Mirada Lamplighter:
M
y name is Linda McFadden Karsten, avid reader of the Lamplighter, thanks for briging the paper back. In 1968 my picture in my wedding gown along with information about my wedding appeared in the Lamplighter. I married Tyler Thomas Zambory on May 25, 1968. On July 27, 2013, I will be marring the young man who on March 22, 1962 asked me to be his steady girlfriend. I had just transferred that January into Mc Nally Junior High School in La Mirada. 51 years later Joe Newpher and I will be joined as one in holy matrimony, this time in Carson City NV. Since my first wedding announcement was in the Lamplighter I thought it would be great to have my last and final marriage announced in the Lamplighter. Especially since my future husband and I both attended McNally Junior High together. Joe asked me in 1962 to be his girl and now in 2013, he has asked me to be his wife. We reconnected through Classmates online. Thank you for taking the time. Linda McFadden Karsten
review of 12,000 papers on climate change, in the May 15th issue of “Environmental Research Letters”, found that 97 percent of scientists attribute climate change to human activities. Although we’re unlikely to reverse climate change, we can mitigate its effects by reducing our driving, energy use, and meat consumption. Yes, meat consumption. A 2006 U.N. report estimated that meat consumption accounts for 18 percent of man-made greenhouse gases. A 2009 article in the respected World Watch magazine suggested that it may be closer to 50 percent. Carbon dioxide, the principal greenhouse gas, is generated by burning forests to create animal pastures and by combustion of fossil fuels to confine, feed, transport, and slaughter animals. The much more damaging methane and nitrous oxide are discharged from digestive tracts of cattle and from animal waste cesspools, respectively. Each of us has the power to reduce the devastating effects of climate change every time we eat. Our local supermarket offers a rich variety of soy-based lunch meats, hotdogs, veggie burgers and soy and nutbased dairy products, as well as an ample selection of vegetables, fruits, grains, and nuts. LAKEWOOD COUNCIL APPROVES PUBLIC SAFETY GRANT By Rico Dizon The Lakewood City Council approved the $129,201 distribution of the 2013-14 State for the Citizen’s Options for Public Safety (COPS) grant during the Council’s regular meeting last May 14. Steve Croft Mayor of Lakewood said, “In our city , we’ve used this law enforcement grant on similar program in the past with positive results. I am glad we’ll have the extra funds again this coming fiscal year to continue our priority of making Lakewood one of the safest communities in the region.” Captain Merrill Ladenheim, Commander of the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station, submitted the recommendation which is broken down into three areas of concerns and consists of an accumulated total of
1,746 additional hours in deputy patrol time. These three COPS missions include the following: Summer Park Program This will provide 352 hours of additional deputy time patrolling city parks during the busy summer season. Special Events This will provide 614 hours of additional deputy time patrolling high-attendance events and locations, such as the Pan American Festival, Civic Center Block Party, and the Lakewood Center mall during the busy holiday shopping season. Enhanced Criminal Enforcement Suppression This will provide 780 hours of additional deputy time to focus on specific “hot spot” issues that develop over the year which could include residential burglaries, saturation patrol or enhanced traffic enforcement. COPS program fund allocation is conducted every year by the State of California specifically aimed at enhancing frontline enforcement. Cities are required to reassess how they will spend the grant, a responsibility that the city usually passes on to the top law enforcement official of the city.

Artesia Historical Society’s Monthly Exhibit By Brian Hews On Saturday May 11, the Artesia Historical Society held its monthly exhibit in honor of Mother’s Day. Entitled “Fashionable Women’s Accessories of the Past,” the exhibit included lady’s hats, gloves, shoes, costume jewelry and many other things. The core items, the lady’s hats, were collected and donated by the late Maude West. Maude was a resident of Artesia from the early 1950s until her death in 1997. She was born in Alberta, Canada and immigrated to Los Angeles in 1929. She married a Long Beach oilman, Donald Anthony West in 1931. During their marriage they lived in Long Beach, Bellflower (area later incorporated into today’s Lakewood) and Artesia. They adopted three children. Maude was an avid volunteer and was active in many organizations. See was a member of the North Long Beach Women’s Club for several years before transferring her membership to the Woman’s Club of Artesia-Cerritos in 1959. She served as the club president from 1979-1981 and 1983-1986. She was chairman of the garden section of the woman’s

During a family visit from Massachusetts she was visiting her in-laws locally and, during the visit, she decided to apply at the than 3 year old hospital. “I interviewed with Doris Ausman and she hired me on the spot. wearing Bermuda shorts during the interview”, recounts Gentile. “At the time Massachusetts was going through a recession and the job market was slow so we decided we had nothing to lose and everything to gain and made the move to Lakewood.” Over her 38 years Gentile has worked in almost every capacity as a nurse at LRMC, most recently serving as Director of Infection Prevention. Pat has helped make major strides while working with clinicians to ensure all measures are taken to prevent the spread of contagious diseases. She has worked to help shape policies and procedures that will continue to be practiced long after she is gone. By her own estimate she has given upwards of 30,000 flu vaccines to employees, volunteers and members at the community at health fairs with the mission of preventing the spread of the flu virus. “Pats relentless dedication to providing the safest environment for our patients and community’s has allowed us to main-
tain the highest standards of care” said Terri Newton, Chief Nursing Officer at LRMC, as she recalled the many contributions Gentile has made ” We will always be grateful to her for the past 38 years she has shared with us” “I am going to miss the people and the good friends I have made here. This has always been a great place to work”, said Gentile when asked what she will miss most about LRMC. “Being a nurse here is like being part of a family and I do mean family because as a nurse I have spent half my life working here and like a family we have spent a lot of time together and support each other”. “Nearly 40 years is an incredible amount of time to commit to a career in nursing and we salute Pat’s devotion to our patients, employees and community, said Joseph B. Badalian, CEO & President of Lakewood Regional Medical Center. “She will be missed by many and we wish her well in her retirement.

Torrey N. Contreras, Director of Community Development for the City said of the project, “We have a good working relationship with Picerne, it is going to be a first class project. As Cerritos residents know, that site has been shuttered for many
years we think that providing housing options presents a good opportunity for the city.” City officials told LCCN that Picerne is in position to acquire the land from the bank and as soon as they complete the purchase the development can begin. The complex will take the western end of the parcel across the parking lot from the current Sam Ash store. The Hollywood Video, Mattress Gallery and Border’s Books buildings will all be demolished to make way for the development. The condominiums will be rented at first with an option for the Picerne group to sell individual units if they so choose.

The charges must be submitted to the County Auditor no later than August 10, 2013. During the public hearing conducted last May 13, only Margaret Saito, the lone crusader for her community, spoke out. “It only gets worse than better,” she voiced out.

GOODWILL INDUSTRIES New Jobs and Changed Lives By Brian Hews As the economy continues its slow recovery, many people continue to struggle to find and keep good jobs. Goodwill SOLAC is helping to alleviate that trend. Last year, more than 8,300 people in the southern Los Angeles County area ac-
cessed Goodwill services. Their workforce development division served over 4,700 individuals through various training programs. Goodwill SOLAC placed 172 job seekers into community jobs in southern Los Angeles County whose average hourly wage was $16.12 working an average of 40 hours per week. Goodwill told LCCN that the ripple effect of those jobs throughout the economy generated an additional 71 jobs for a total of 243 jobs with total wages of $9.5 million and a total economic impact of $21.9 million. The fiscal impact generated by Goodwill SOLAC by these total placements last year was $751,592 for the State of California. “The revenue generated through the sale

of donated goods helps us provide individuals with barriers to employment job training programs and access to employment opportunities that lead to economic self-sufficiency and family sustaining wages,” said Janet McCarthy, President & CEO of Goodwill SOLAC. Goodwill is North America’s top five most valuable and recognized nonprofit brands and the leading nonprofit provider of employment programs for people with disabilities, those who lack education or job experience, and others who face challenges to finding employment. “Thank you for your ongoing support,” said McCarthy. “Together, we are preparing people for new jobs and changing lives.”

or the fifth time in the past nine seasons, Gahr’s baseball team will be playing in a California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section divisional quarterfinal game. This past Tuesday, the Gladiators rode the arm of senior Greg Humbert en route to a 6-1 road victory at La Quinta. Gahr, the third ranked team in Division III, has now won 13 straight games to improve to 22-5. It’s the ninth time since 1999 that the Gladiators have won at least 20 games and the 22 wins are the most since going 23-6 in 2005. Humbert, a transfer from Mayfair High, worked six innings, scattering four

hits and striking out three. Humbert improved to 7-2 and has been a key part of a pitching staff that has allowed five runs in the past eight games. Humbert now sports an earned run average of 1.08. Offensively, Gahr was led by senior Kevin Franklin, who drove in four runs and added a home run. He, along with senior Edgar Morales, each had a pair of hits as Gahr will host Diamond Bar today. Senior Andrew Encinas is expected to make his second start of the playoffs. He defeated Highland 6-0 in the first round on May 16. SUBURBAN LEAGUE Cerritos junior Ryan Shelton is the lone area representative to compete in today’s CIF-Southern Section Track and Field Masters Meet. Shelton finished third in Division III in the high jump with a mark of 6’ 7”, which is the eighth best mark overall. Shelton was the only area athlete from the league to compete in the divisional championships last Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College. Norwalk’s baseball team was eliminated by second ranked Temecula Valley 10-0 last Friday in a Division II first round game. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak. The Lancers still finished with a winning record (13-12) for the second time in three years and advanced to the first round for the first time since 2006. SAN GABRIEL VALLEY LEAGUE
Senior Ricky Ellis was Gahr’s lone representative in the track and field divisional championships and finished in fifth place in Division III in the 400 with a time of 50.26. OLYMPIC LEAGUE Valley Christian was well represented in the track and field divisional championships but none of its athletes moved on to today’s Masters Meet. Senior triple jumper Bryce Mulder finished in fifth place in Division IV with a mark of 42’ 8 ¼” while sophomore Brian Cok had a mark of 40’ 11 ½”. Cok also had a mark of 19’ 9 ¼” in the long jump. Senior Jahdai Dunk came in sixth place in the 100 with a time of 12.58 and was part of the 4 x 100 relay team with senior Alyx Henry, junior Rataeja Shoeles and freshman Anaya Wesley that came in seventh place with a time of 50.66. Shoeles also was a seventh place finisher in the 100 hurdles (15.52) and a fourth place finisher in the high jump (5’ 1”). Also competing in the high jump with a mark of 5’ 1” was sophomore Alex Fenderson. ACADEMY LEAGUE Whitney junior Michaela Platt had a mark of 4’ 11” in the high jump and 15’ 7 ½” in the long jump while junior Reyna Ta’amu of basketball fame finished in third in Division IV in the shot put with a distance of 36’ 1 ¼”. She also threw 103’ 4” in the discus, good enough for sixth place.

CERRITOS STYMIED BY LAKEWOOD’S DEEP HITS, SPEED IN FIRST ROUND LOSS

LAKEWOOD — The phrase ‘speed kills’ was Cerritos’ bugaboo when it faced Lakewood last Thursday in a California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division II first round playoff game. The speed of Lakewood’s Janel Hayes and Jessica Scroggins propelled the division’s fourth ranked team to a 3-2 victory. Cerritos, which edged La Reina 3-2 in nine innings on May 14 for its first playoff victory since 2004, concludes the season at 13-11. The Lady Dons trailed until the sixth inning as Hayes was steaming through the Cerritos lineup with relative ease. Hayes gave up just a first inning single to sophomore catcher Heather Cameron, who was stranded at second, and a fourth inning, two-out blooper to sophomore first baseman Madison Lee. It was about that time that the third place representatives from the Suburban League began to pick up the energy and they finally got to Hayes with two runs in the top of the sixth. With one out, sophomore left fielder Melanie Okazaki sent a blooper into shallow right. After a fly-out, Cameron launched a double to center, putting Cerritos on the board. Then Lee drove her in with a single to center. “They believed it,” said Cerritos head coach Bob Medina. “They believed in their game. They believed in what we were coming here to do. They never gave up.” But Hayes sat down the next four batters on nine pitches to preserve the win. Hayes allowed five hits and struck out three on 76 pitches. She retired five batters on one pitch a piece and needed only two pitches to retire six other batters. “She’s a great pitcher; you can’t take that away from her,” Medina said. “Everybody in the [Moore] League says it. So, we knew it.” But the pitching from Cerritos was almost as equal to that of Hayes. Sophomore

TO ADVERTISE CALL 800-901-7211 NOTICE OF DIVIDED PUBLICATION Made pursuant to Section 3381, Revenue and Taxation Code Pursuant to Sections 3381 through 3385, Revenue and Taxation Code, the Notice of Power to Sell Tax-Defaulted Property in and for Los Angeles County, State of California, has been divided and distributed to various newspapers of general circulation published in the County. A portion of the list appears in each of such newspapers. NOTICE OF IMPENDING POWER TO SELL TAX-DEFAULTED PROPERTY Made pursuant to Section 3361, Revenue and Taxation Code Notice is hereby given that real property taxes and assessments on the parcels described below will have been defaulted five or more years, or, in the case of nonresidential commercial property, property on which a nuisance abatement lien has been recorded or that can serve the public benefit by providing housing or services directly related to low-income persons when three or more years have elapsed and a request has been made by a city, county, city and county, or nonprofit organization that property will become subject to the Tax Collector’s power to sell. The parcels listed will become subject to the Tax Collector’s power to sell on July 1, 2013, at 12:01 a.m., by operation of law. The Tax Collector’s power to sell will arise unless the property is either redeemed or made subject to an installment plan of redemption initiated as provided by law prior to 5:00 p.m., on June 28, 2013. The right to an installment plan terminates on June 28, 2013, and after that date the entire balance due must be paid in full to prevent sale of the property at public auction. The right of redemption survives the property becoming subject to the power to sell, but it terminates at 5:00 p.m. on the last business day before actual sale of the property by the Tax Collector. All information concerning redemption or the initiation of an installment plan of redemption will be furnished, upon request, by Mark J. Saladino, Los Angeles County Treasurer and Tax Collector, 225 North Hill Street, First Floor, Los Angeles, California 90012. The amount to redeem, in dollars and cents, is set forth opposite its parcel number. This amount includes all defaulted taxes, penalties, and fees that have accrued from the date of tax-default to the date of June 28, 2013. I certify, under penalty of perjury, that the foregoing is true and correct. Dated this 2nd day of May, 2013.
