The harassment started after Lopez sent a proposal June 15, 2013 to then General Manager Art Aguilar to become Central Basin’s Client Relations Manager and was hired for that position July 1, 2013. At Apodaca’s request, she was assigned to work with him, the assignment being approved by Aguilar.

Candidates Begin Dash for November 5th Campaigns By Randy Economy Candidates who will be seeking a spot on the upcoming November 5th election ballot will begin the formal filing process during the next several weeks, as the campaigns for local school board and city council seats heat up. Incumbents have already expressed interest in seeking reelections in several key races, including in Artesia where Councilman Victor Manalo has already began an aggressive campaign by holding public campaign related activities and fundraising events. In Artesia, current Mayor Sally Flowers and Councilman John Lyon are also up for reelection. Businessman Manu Patel, who is a key leader in the Artesia Chamber of Commerce, and

who has built a high profile in community affairs has indicated to Hews Media Group – Community Newspaper that he will be running for City Council. If Patel is successful, he will become the first Indo-American ever elected to the five member governing body. In Hawaiian Gardens, three incumbent city council members are up for reelection. They are Councilwoman Michi Oyama Canada, Councilman Barry Bruce and Councilman Reynaldo “Rey” Rodriguez. A potential challenger is community leader Valerie Mason who serves as a city commissioner. In the ABC Unified School District, three incumbents are facing the voters in November. Members James Kang, Linda

Norwalk Council Delays Decision On Auto Impound Yard Expansion By Kristin Grafft Norwalk residents expressed concern over the possible expansion of Loftus Corporation’s auto impound yard at the Norwalk City Council meeting on July 2. Up until this time, a portion of the Loftus property has remained unused and left as a sort of alleyway, buffering the neighboring houses from the impound lot. However, due to the widening of the I-5 freeway, the Loftus Corporation had to relinquish a portion of their impound yard to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). In response to this reduction, Loftus Corporation has proposed a reconfiguration of their property that includes shifting the yard 50 feet east into this “alley. A 10-foot sound wall would then be constructed right on the eastern edge of the Loftus property bordering the houses. However, neighboring homeowners have long been concerned about the state and maintenance of the Loftus property. Residents expressed greater concerns regarding health and safety issues should the buffer zone between themselves and the impound lot be removed. Many residents also expressed fears that the 10-foot wall could become an access point into their backyards. Tony Aldana lives in one of the bordering houses and said, “We oppose this venture vehemently. We want to keep the alley as it is. Aldana said that without the alley as a buffer the wall would be easy to jump over. Cerritos Tennis Center now enrolling for

“They do very little business. We live there, we know. They don't need an expansion.â€? He said. Rebecca Alonzo raised another issue with the proposed 10-foot wall. “My garage is too close to this fence. It's going to ruin my garage. And it’s going to ruin other people’s garages.â€? She said. Alonzo explained that many of the older houses in this area were built right up to the property line with the eves hanging over. If a wall that high were to be constructed on the property line it would hit the eves of some of the garages. Candace Roni, another resident, has lived there for 11 years. Roni said that there have been problems with that property for the entire time she has lived there. “At no time has it been secure or maintained,â€? she said. Roni listed unauthorized dumping, dumping of hazardous materials, problems with rats and, at one point, a chop shop, as some of the many problems. In conclusion Roni requested the council make sure all codes are met before going ahead with any sort of approvals. “If we’re going to have a development lets have it be sustainable, reasonable, equitable, fair, no trash, no dumping, no transient people lighting fires, codes enforced‌ it effects my property value,â€? she said. Many of the councilmembers shared similar sentiments with the residents. Cheri Kelley said, “The Loftus property has been a problem ever since I’ve been on city council,â€? and Vice Mayor Marcel Rodarte said, “I know I wouldn’t want that right up against my property, especially if they’re doing things they’re not supposed to be doing there.â€? However, as Councilman Mike Mendez pointed out, “First of all this is Loftus’ property and if he wants to put a fence up on it it’s his right to do that.â€? Mendez added that a buffer zone within that property would be a good idea though. “Something like employee parking only there to prevent junk cars from being right there and leaking liquids and catching on fire‌ The rest of the issues are things that need to be strictly enforced (either way).â€? In the end the council decided that that proposal be rewritten to address the concerns brought up at the meeting and the revised version would be presented at the August 6 meeting. It will again be open to public comment to address the new conditions at that time. HOMETOWN HEROES HONORED In other items, the city council honored Norwalk’s hometown heroes currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. After being on display for a year on city boulevards, family members were presented with a banner of their loved one. The Hometown Heroes presented at the July 2 meeting were Talia Brooke

Alejandre of the US Navy, Eric Ayala of the Marines, Aaron Edward of the Army, Macario Leon of the Army, Sandra Rojas of the Army and Radley Wyatt Turner of the Army. Council members also wanted to wish everyone a happy Fourth of July and remind residents to be safe. Mayor Luigi Vernola said, “Don’t forget why we celebrate the Fourth of July. Things are illegal for a reason. The meeting was then closed in honor of the 19 firefighters killed in Arizona. The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16 at the City Hall Council Chambers.

Assemblymember Garcia Invites Community to ‘Walk, Talk’ By Justin Cooley California State Assembly member Cristina Garcia will be hosting a community “Walk and Talk at Cerritos Park East this Saturday, July 6th in hopes to answer questions of importance about future plans for the 58th Assembly District or about their new state representative, Assembly member Garcia. The community walk is part of a series of community “Walk and Talks around various cities in the 58th Assembly District held on the first Saturday of every month. She has previously held community walks in Downey, Commerce, and Bellflower, with each of them being extremely well received. The walks typically gather a few dozen constituents and community leader to participate. “The beauty of these community walks is that it introduces newly-elected Assembly member Cristina Garcia to the community but it also gives exposure to the services she can offer. It is an informal way to engage with your State representative, Dennise Silva, Garcia’s spokesperson, says. In this month’s Cerritos walk, Garcia will be joined by a representative from the Los Angeles County Fire Department who will be informing residents about the department’s Explore Program. Her office will also be accepting donations of new socks and underwear, as well as other travel-sized toiletries (toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc.). The donations will be distributed to homeless and other individuals in need around the community. Garcia has also planned a stop in Norwalk, at Holifield Park at 12500 Excelsior Dr. on August 3rd from 8-9 a.m. Later that month she will be addressing questions regarding the Affordable Healthcare Act at the Pico Rivera Senior Center on August 23rd. Cerrito’s “Walk and Talk will take place from 8-9 a.m. on July 6th. Walkers are asked to meet at the center gazebo. Norwalk Sewer Fee Dear Editor: On June 4, 2013 a hearing was held in the Norwalk City Council Chambers as required under Prop 218 to establish a new Sewer Surcharge. In a moment, the results of that hearing. Presentation was made addressing the needs and requirements to upgrade the sewer system. Residents spoke, and addressed the City Council members in attendance. 100% speaking in opposition to the surcharge fee. Ballots of protest against the new fee were counted. 102 total received. 101 opposed. 1 in favor. After council members discussion and indication of Mr.’s Vernola & Mendez opposition to the extent Mayor Vernola indicated he has faith in Norwalk voters and perhaps they should indeed make this important decision. With Vice Mayor Rodarte expressing of his disappointment that it was previously a foregone approval, and Mr Shryock statement “we can’t put this to the voters, they will never vote for it”. The matter was continued until the next regular council meeting of June 18th. The hearing on June 18th was anything but a hearing. The Norwalk City Council heard only what they chose to hear. The overwhelming majority of speakers opposed the fee. 146 ballots received in opposition. However, City Council voted unanimously (5-0) in favor to approve the new fee. Can you say “Turncoat” ? Apparently Mayor Vernolas’ faith in the voters of Norwalk is not as strong as he would have us believe. Mr. Mendez had a change of heart or an offer he couldn’t refuse. This brings me to my conclusion. The hearing of June 4 was nothing more than Smoke and Mirrors to present the impression that further consideration was necessary and await the return of Ms. Kelley on the 18th. The meeting of the 18th was simply a Dog & Pony show lead by the Big Dog herself. The “Fix” as Mr Rodarte eluded to on the 4th apparently was in, and this was a “done deal” long before the meeting of the 18th. Ms. Kelly stated in open chambers, she would prefer to raise property tax on 21,000 property owners than hear that someone at the Arts and Sports Complex would lose their personal trainer. She was particularly not pleased by the mention of the $1.2 million dollars being returned to the city from redevelopment funds and tax fees from the county. If anyone reading this thinks this is the end of this, I fear you are sadly mistaken or otherwise delusional. Now that they have found how easy it really is to extract money from residents and property owners, I assure you they will be back for more. The current Norwalk City Council would rather raise taxes before eliminating even the most non essential luxuries within the budget, that we obviously can’t afford. David Lauderdale Norwalk, Ca.

In regard to the $60.6 million total losses at the Cerritos Center for Performing Arts between 2003 and 2011 which I documented in the public comments in the budget meeting June 18, could you provide more information about the following issues? 1.The agenda said that the public comments would be after the roll call, but they were delayed for two hours, until just before the adjournment. What was the reason for deviating from the published schedule? 2. You said in response to my public comments that the budgetary profit & loss data I obtained from the city via a California Public Records Act request wasn’t audited. When I talked to you after the meeting you said it wasn’t accurate. Are the city employees who prepared this data not competent? Why is the city is using inaccurate data in its budgeting for the CCPA? 3. You told me after the meeting that there was better data about the CCPA, which you had provided to the Los Cerritos News in 2007. When I asked about the issue of the LCCN in which it was pre-

sented, you said it was my responsibility to find it. If that information really is more accurate, why would you want to make it more difficult to get to it? 4. Along the same lines, you indicated that the city had better data but wasn’t giving it to me because I was asking the wrong questions in my Public Records Act requests. If there are reports that really do provide a good economic justification for $7.5 million annual losses, why do we have to play hide-and-seek to get the information to be available? Community Voices: Injured LAUSD Teacher Lashes Out at ‘California Worker’s Comp Corruption’ Note: Los Cerritos Community Newspaper allows for our readers to submit their own “investigative” articles. This is

By Rozy Press Workers’ Comp corruption breaks the law and doesn’t follow judicial ethics as Judge Jerold Cohn and Dr. John Stalberg lowered my rating and denied my benefits. This is clearly shown in my documented LAUSD Workers’ Comp Case. My LAUSD Workers’ Comp Case is now 12 1/2 year old. LAUSD Admitted my WC case in 2002 as an “Act of Violence” meaning physical injuries from being sprayed in my face with toxic chemicals by my student. All documented and I’m totally disabled from being sprayed. The goal of LAUSD in my Workers’ Comp Case, as they broke the Law, was not to provide the necessary medical treatment and care that I so desperately need. Or even pay me at all as the Law requires. In order I believe to accomplish this Rating was lowered and my Benefits were denied. WCAB Trial Judge Jerold Cohn made a medical diagnosis, changed all the facts in my case and not followed the Decision of the WC Appeals Board. Then

Former Cerritos Resident Scores Bulls Eye With Bio Book on Lee Marvin

By Randy Economy Author Dwayne Epstein has scored a direct bull’s eye with his recently released bio book on legendary actor Lee Marvin called “Point Blank.” (Schaffner Press, Inc. $27.95 Retail) Epstein and his family moved into a newly built housing tract located at 183rd Street and Marquardt Avenue back in the late 1960’s back when Cerritos was controlled by thousands of cows, and “billions of flies.” The son of the late Morris and Royce Epstein, Dwayne sat down with Los Cerritos Community Newspaper last week for an interview at Off Street Café for lunch to talk about his passion and commitment in documenting the life of Marvin to whom he calls a “complex man, who was a surprisingly intelligent and heroic figure in Hollywood history.” “When I was raised in Cerritos, I was always a movie buff and a huge fan of Lee Marvin,” Epstein said. “Just having the opportunity to tell the real story of the life of a Hollywood legend like Lee Marvin is a huge honor.” Epstein, who graduated from Cerritos High School in 1978, also attended Carmentia Elementary School, Cerritos Elementary School and Carmenita Junior

Year of Lee Marvin,” Epstein writes. “It was almost impossible to pick up a periodical or turn on a TV talk show without seeing his by now familiar visage. Paradoxically, his personal life spiraled

into free fall, just as two films released the same year established the forty-year-old Lee Marvin as a major film star beyond anyone’s expectation,” Epstein says in a chapter of the book under the title “Tension, Baby, Just Tension.” Lee Marvin "is the guy who started it all in terms of modern American cinema violence," according to Epstein. Epstein believes the Oscar-winning tough guy Marvin "was part of a new generation of acting in film.” “If Marlon Brando was the dividing line between the old theatrical way of acting on film and the new realistic way of acting on film, Lee was the dividing line between John Wayne and Clint Eastwood in terms of the male action-oriented actor. The man who made Eastwood's screen persona possible was Lee Marvin," Epstein said.Epstein has been travelling all across the United States since January pitching “Point Blank” at book signings, film festivals, television interviews, radio talk shows and other media outlets.“This has been the greatest part of my life,” said Epstein, who is now a resident of Long Beach.Epstein is now part of the life and legacy of Lee Marvin, and for his efforts movie buffs across the globe “Point Blank” is a MUST for your book collection.

(PARK) program. During his shift, Sanchez noticed a parent running toward a child who appeared to be gasping for air. Sanchez, a recent recipient of CPR and first aid training, ran over to the child and discovered the child choking on an object and struggling for air. Sanchez proceeded to perform the Heimlich maneuver on the child, an emergency technique where abdominal thrusts applied to the victim force

air out of the lungs, thereby clearing the victim’s airway. After a series of repetitions using the Heimlich maneuver, a piece of candy was dislodged from the child’s throat, allowing the child to breathe again. The child was eventually released under parental control without further medical attention. Were it not for the fast-acting, lifesaving actions taken by Sanchez, what

ended in a mere close call could have resulted in tragedy. The La Mirada community and entire Public Safety Team thank Sanchez for his heroic efforts. A little more than two months from today, a door will close, and another will open. As time progresses I sit here, pondering, hoping, and dreaming about what waits beyond the doorway, what fantastic adventures and unknowns lie there? A little less than two and one-half months from now, I will travel to Denu, Ghana with WACV Inc. as that unknown world slowly reveals itself to me. I imagine Ghana as a harsh and beautiful land, full of rivulets, flora, and fauna: A rough unexplored terrain with an entire culture developing apart from the Westernized world that contains wonders to behold. Like Dante, who journeyed through the inferno, purgatorio, and paradiso and learned much of the world unknown to himself, I hope to journey through the modern day inferno, purgatorio, and paradise. I will search for the inferno, I will look for purgatorio, and I will find paradiso in the sub-Sahara. I anticipate that this trip will inspire me as it has done for others who have

dared to venture beyond the lands known. Like Columbus and the Atlantic, I will discover a new world, for better or worse. And like Darwin in the Encantadas, I search for inspiration. I have hence found the thirst for adventure unquenchable; every indulgence in the fountain of adventure leaves me thirstier; every new revelation inspires me further. I possess an overpowering alacrity to explore the world around me. Many people ask me a question which I only slightly consider: “Aren’t you worried about how dangerous Africa is?” And I often respond, “No, not at all.” I choose not to worry because I trust myself, and love experiential learning. Worrying hinders progressiveness. Virgil the poet once wrote, “Fortune favors the bold” and I wholeheartedly agree. We must dare to challenge complacency. If we never allow ourselves to leave our comfort zone, how can we possibly hope to grasp the world around us? The world is a dynamic machine, constantly changing and moving across space and time. Every not in this grand sonata must lead the way for more. We must go out in search of self-evident truths, playing the song known as our life to its fullest. We must take the leap of faith, and fall into fortune’s adroit hands. The world is not waiting, why should we?” This is how I feel. This is why I choose to conquer Ghana.

APODACA

Continued from page 1 After a very short time, Lopez claims that Apodaca “engaged in repeated efforts to sexually harass and seduce her over her irate objections.” The harassment evolved into escalating physical contact, according to Lopez, including unwelcome touching, petting, hugs and kisses after which Lopez again complained to Central Basin Management. Lopez said nothing was done in response to her complaints. In the claim, Lopez is alleging that elected members of the Board of Directors had full knowledge that Apodaca had a history of claims made and/or filed against him for improper sexual actions and conduct with subordinates. Inside sources tell HMG-CN that several sexual harassment lawsuits have been filed against Apodaca, and two have ended in large settlements. Director Chacon told HMG-CN “Despite such knowledge, at Mr. Apodaca’s request, then General Manager Art Aguilar assigned Ms. Lopez to start working with him without any caution or warning that Mr. Apodaca had a history of sexual conduct toward district employees.” The claim went on to say that the harassment intensified, with Apodaca asking for sexual favors from Lopez in order to keep her job. Ms. Lopez again complained and was subsequently fired. The law firm also names current Di-

In regards to whether the District will provide legal counsel for Apodaca’s defense, “I would support defending the District’s interest, but not Director Apodaca’s, or any Director for that matter when it comes to allegations of repeated sexual misconduct. The rate payers monies should not be used to defend such behavior,” Chacon urged. Former Director Rudy Montalvo said, “I am aware of the claim. My colleagues Art Chacon and Edward Vasquez told me that they had observed Apodaca groping another young lady, Kara Medrano, that used to work there. I myself did not see anything. But when that came to me we all agreed to take it to General Manager Art Aguilar.” “We had a meeting, told Aguilar what happened, Aguilar said I will see what I can do. Next thing I know Medrano had left and money had been paid to her,” Montalvo said. Director Phil Hawkins said that the situation swirling around Apodaca is “a cancer that we have to cut out of our system.” “I will wait until we complete an internal investigation regarding Apodaca before I determine if he should resign or be removed from office. We have a lot of burdens on us right now here at Central Basin and a lot of bad people need to be removed from this organization in order for us to move forward and to restore confidence from the voters and rate payers,” said Hawkins who is also a former State Assemblyman who represents the greater Cerritos area on the board. been zeroing on the embattled agency. Young Veteran Dreams Big ‘WYSH’s’ for Troubled Soldiers By Justin Cooley and Randy Economy The numbers are staggering. Twenty-two soldiers take their own lives every day here in the United States. As technology changes, so does the way we send our troops onto the battlefield, but that doesn’t change the fact that war is war and that lives are still be lost in staggering numbers. The grit and perseverance soldiers show is a human feat in itself, but to see soldiers come home despondent, broken and scared just shows how much the battlefield can have on a life. Andrew O’Brien, the founder of the WYSH program (Welcome Your Soldier Home) is just one of the tens of thousands of veterans afflicted by the severity of war. Raised in poverty, O’Brien grew up in a broken family and dropped out of high school when he was 18. He soon found himself enlisted in the army. It had been given him exactly what he’d been missing his entire life: discipline, a family environment, and adrenaline. Originally stationed in Hawaii, the Iraq War brought him directly to the battlefield. Stationed in Bayji, Iraq for an entire year, O’Brien describes his experience, “It’s nothing that any amount of training can prepare you for. You see movies and video games glorifying action and adventure like this, but when you get to the real thing, when you’re really there, it’s not the same.” O’Brien saw some of the worst of the war. He recalls one situation where an IED dropped down from a tree and landed in a gunner hole in a truck, killing the entire unit. In an earlier instance an IED had blown up right behind his vehicle.

After his station in Iraq, O’Brien tried to readjust to civilian living. He saw a counselor, but refused to discharge over the claim that he had PTSD. Soon he found himself distant and detached. He destroyed his relationships and lashed out. He could no longer relate to friends and family.

in service. As soon as his contract with the military ended he left Hawaii and moved back to Dallas, Texas, his hometown. He replaced adrenaline with party going and alcohol. Adjusting back to civilian living began his downfall; the stress of readjusting and the lingering effects of the war drove him to suicide.

[l-r] Ryan Surber, Founder of MyCharityLife.com and Andrew O’Brien, Founder of the WYSH Program visit the offices of Hews Media Group - Community Newspaper in Cerritos last week to talk openly about the staggering suicide rate of soldiers serving in the military. He coped through street racing and other dangerous activities, desperate for any form of adrenaline pumping activity that could possibly recreate what he felt

O’Brien chose to end his life painlessly, overdosing on whatever he had around him: anti-depressants, over-the-counter drugs, etc. But as his life slowly left his

body he realized he wasn’t ready to go. He called 9-1-1 and said, “Help.” The next morning he woke up in the hospital. He went through 5150-psych hold and was forced into group counseling classes. It was only after his suicide attempt did he realize that adjust to everyday life was possible. Andrew O’Brien’s WYSH programs aims to prevent stories like his from repeating itself in other veterans. The program helps families of wounded warriors of the stress and fatigue of war through suicide prevention, support groups, and financial aid. Together with the Austin School of film, O’Brien will be releasing a documentary slated for 2014 release about the lives of veterans and the psychological effect of war on people. He is currently touring the United States doing public speaking events and other related rallies. Also touring with O’Brien is Ryan Surber, founder of mycharitylife.com, a free Internet service that hosts a variety of charity organizations that converge through the site in turn creating a social networking-esque way of giving back to the local community. Surber said that he is “inspired” by O’Brien and his passion to “create positive change.” “America is at a cross roads, and just being able to help Andrew and his project is one of the most gratifying movements I have ever been associated with,” Surber said. “One person can still change lives, lots of them,” he said. The City of Downey is pleased to announce that it has successfully secured $20,000,000 in grant funding, specifically targeted for the replacement of the Florence Avenue bridge at the San Gabriel River and rehabilitation of the Florence Avenue bridge at the Rio Hondo River. Grant funding will also support the implementation of the Citywide Transit Priority System. The City applied for and has been recommended to receive approximately $17,500,000 in federal grants through the Highway Bridge Program (HBP) for the purpose of replacing the Florence Bridge over the San Gabriel River, as well as the rehabilitation of the Florence Bridge over the Rio Hondo River. Additionally, through a competitive process, the City applied for funding through the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) “Call for Projects” to cover the cost of matching funds for the Florence Bridge over the San Gabriel River Project. On Friday, June 28, 2013, Metro notified the City that it been recommended for funding in the amount of $1,917,000 for this specific project. The City’s application was ranked 2nd out of 32 applications. Separately, the City applied for funding for the Citywide Transit Priority System, also through the “Metro Call for Projects” competitive grant process. The application was ranked 10th out of 32 in the Signal Synchronization category and the City once again was successful in securing an additional $1,292,000 in grant funding for this project. This grant will pay for an embellishment of the City’s traffic signal system, which will give an early or extended “green” indication to public transit buses at signalized intersections along Downey LINK and Metro bus routes when the buses are running behind schedule. This Citywide Transit Priority System was noted as a key recommendation under the City’s Civic Master Plan. “As a City, one of our visions is to find long-term solutions to help enhance City services and better serve our residents and this grant funding proves exactly that. We feel very fortunate to have been awarded these grants, as it will allow us to fix our infrastructure, which ultimately benefits our residents. Thank you to my fellow Council colleagues and our hard working City staff for making this possible,” said Mayor Mario A. Guerra.

Continued from page 1 Johnson and Olympia Chen will be up for reelection and all three have indicated to supporters that they plan on seeking a place on the Fall ballot. One challenger has already surfaced in the ABC School Board election in Cerritos resident Danny Fierro who has already began an aggressive fundraising campaign via social media web sites including Facebook. Fierro is a Field Deputy to California State Assemblyman Ian Calderon and is a former graduate of Yale University. Incumbents facing reelection in the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District include Board President Ed Hengler,

Vice President Margarita Rios, as Members Ana Valencia and Darryl Adams. Challenger Jami Trinidad has already gotten an early jump on the campaign and has announced her intentions in seeking election, “I am a classroom teacher, a product of Norwalk-La Mirada schools, and a candidate for NLMUSD School Board, running to create a better education for the next generation,” Trinidad told supporters via Facebook. Elections will also take place for seats on the Rio Hondo Community College Board of Trustees, the El Rancho Unified School Board in the Pico Rivera area, as well as the Little Lake City School Board that includes the cities of Norwalk and Santa Fe Springs.

Nielsen is Cerritos’ gift that keeps on giving By Loren Kopff When you have lived in the same city for your entire life, you feel compelled to give back to that city what it has given to you. That’s what Jon Nielsen has been doing for the City of Cerritos for several years as it relates to the sports side of things. A former Cerritos High quarterback and current offensive coordinator for Gahr’s football team, Nielsen could very well be the busiest person in the city who doesn’t work directly for the city or sits on the city council board. What he has done for the past decade or so, especially in the coaching realm, shouldn’t go without notice. But for those who aren’t in Nielsen’s immediate circle of acquaintances, you might think he is almost invisible, or you might wonder who he really is. “The busiest person that doesn’t exist,” Nielsen chuckled. “I think I’m one of the only people who grew up playing all of the different sports throughout the city when I was young with the different organizations like the Frontier Baseball all the way through Cerritos High School. Then I came back and helped them out in their glory years when [former head coach] Kurt Bruich was there, and then obviously taking my nephews to Gahr. I never left helping Cerritos sports. Some of [them] gave so much to me, so I feel I should give it back” Nielsen’s coaching resume is three pages long but has enough information to be six pages long. He played football for two universities and two other colleges, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Government from Claremont McKenna College. Then he spent some time with the Oakland Raiders, New York Cityhawks of the Arena Football League, Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League, New Jersey Red Dogs of the AFL and Arkansas Twisters of the AFL 2, the minor league version of the AFL, Birmingham Thunderbolts of the Xtreme Football League and back with the Argonauts. But it’s what Nielsen has done during and after his playing days that is making people pay attention to him. Nielsen has been involved in scouting and coaching hundreds of players, including those in his immediate family, and getting many Gahr football players scholarships. Nielsen said his goal was never to be a coach but sometimes in life, things fall into place when you least expect it. “My dad coached a lot, so I played everything,” Nielsen said. “I was the quarterback; I had to play center one year. The memories I have, I remember them like it was yesterday. Then with baseball, I remember I was a catcher because I was a

bigger kid. One of our pitchers got hurt, so my coach asked if I could pitch. I went out there and struck out nine straight. “Once you coach a certain amount of years, it’s kind of easy to flip it and coach other things,” he later added. “Throughout the years, you gain the knowledge and intricacies of the game.” In 2001 when he was making his second stint with Toronto, Nielsen made a promise to coach his nephews Corey and Casey, both former Gahr standouts who rewrote the high school state record book in passing. The promise came right after Corey, who was in the third grade at the time, wrote him a note basically pleading for his uncle not to go back north of the border. It’s a good thing Nielsen stuck with his promise because by the time his nephews got to Gahr, people were talking about them. When it was all said and done, Corey

been such a part of my life,” Nielsen said. “It was always organized. So when I was playing a getting paid for it, I was always looking to do something else. I wanted to be involved in other aspects than just playing. I tried to expand [other areas]. I paid attention to how people were managed, the good and bad.” For someone who graduated from Cerritos, his efforts could have easily helped and turned around the Cerritos High football program, one that has struggled this decade, instead of Gahr. Former Cerritos principal Jeff Green, who was Nielsen’s teacher and coach back in the day, put him on a panel to hire the next Cerritos head coach following the 2003 season. When Green hired someone other than who Nielsen had highly recommended, Nielsen decided to go to Gahr and high school football in the city has clearly been dominated by Gahr. Nielsen was told by then Cerritos

Jon Nielsen coaches nephew Corey during a Gahr High School road game over five years ago. Corey and Casey Nielsen would graduate from Gahr setting several state passing records. was the second ranked passer in the nation in 2007 and tops in the state with 4,363 yards. The next season, Corey was fourth in the state and earned a scholarship to play at the University of Hawai’i. In 2009, Casey led the state with a 400.5 yards per game average and was the top quarterback in the state. He got a scholarship to play at Lindenwood University. “I had no idea that they were going to become the players they became,” Nielsen said. “Was it beyond my expectations? Yes. But I had a plan from the early start to work with them and train them the best way I knew how.” In fact Nielsen, who was recognized by the city during the 50th anniversary festivities for being a Cerritos athlete, has been instrumental in getting scholarships for 16 Gahr players in the past six or seven years. From 2007-2011, Gahr has been anywhere from first to fourth in the state for high school passing offense in regular season games. And to think that Nielsen, who once took the LSAT, was accepted to three different law schools. Now, he calls himself a life changer. “For me, football and athletics have

head coach Aron Kaye that, ‘you can’t run the run and shoot in high school. You don’t have the personnel to run it’. Since 2004, Gahr has won 47 games and made two trips to the playoffs. Cerritos has won 12 games with no trips to the postseason. “Aron Kaye changed the landscape of Cerritos football with Gahr and Cerritos the last 10 years,” Nielsen said. “When I stepped on [the Gahr] campus to coach Corey 10 years ago, we changed the whole landscape of football. They had just lost [40 straight games]. They were playing freelance [football] and the Suburban League schedule and doing okay. “Numbers don’t lie and scholarships don’t lie,” Nielsen added. “My whole philosophy is this, and a lot of people will get mad. I could care less how many games I’ve won if I’m getting kids an opportunity to get a scholarship. To me, high school is about enhancing a kid’s chance to go to the next level. It’s not about wins and losses. We’re not at a private school. We’re not making six figures to coach. We’re not Servite or Mater Dei.” This season, Nielsen’s other nephew, Colby, hopes to follow in the footsteps of

Corey and Casey. Nielsen has already stated that Colby could be the best of the three. Then there is Nielsen’s daughter Jadyn, a current Cerritos Girls Softball Association All-Star for the 8-Under team, and son Jarret Johnson, who plays for the Cerritos International Little League. Jadyn will be entering the fourth grade and J.J. will be coming into the second grade. Both figure to be high school athletes. But will the 40year old Nielsen, who is also in the entertainment and management business, still be at Gahr coaching them? He says that his next adventure changes day to day. “Again, it’s relationships,” Nielsen said. “That’s life. It’s how you treat people; it’s how you interact with people. Everything comes full circle. You’re going to see the same people going up as you are going down.”

LETTERS

Continued from page 5 “partnered” with Dr. John Stalberg who changed all the facts and adopted Judge Cohn medical diagnosis. Dr. Stalberg admitted under Oath that he hadn’t seen me for years or even wanted to. He didn’t even have the evidence to prove the medical diagnosis. But, he didn’t care. And then wrote a $16,770-$700 a page “Bogus” unsubstantiated Medical Report. Workers’ Comp Corruption, Fraud and Injustice all to Lower my Rating and deny my Benefits I was an art teacher at Sepulveda Middle School in the San Fernando Valley near Los Angeles, when on December 8, 2000 I was sprayed in my face with the toxic chemicals from a fire extinguisher by one of my students. I was gasping for air, and my tongue was swelling and my nose was closing. The rest of my students were exposed to the chemicals and they were also getting very sick. Another LAUSD teacher died (7/2012) from being sprayed (6/2000). Neither paramedics nor Hazmat clean-up were ever called, and 180 of my students sat exposed to the toxic yellow powder from the fire extinguisher which coated surfaces all over the room for months. I have documented lung damage, Fibromyalgia, pain, and exhaustion. Dr. Silverman, a rheumatologist, rated me 100% disabled due to now having Fibromyalgia from being sprayed at work. I have a LAUSD 12 1/2 year old, Admitted 2002, “Act of Violence” meaning physical injuries from being sprayed with the toxic chemicals. I was receiving benefits until 2009 when they were cut off. Since then, all LAUSD and Workers Comp have wanted to do was Delay my case, Lower my Rating and Deny my Benefits. Judge Jerold Cohn and Dr. John Stalberg in partnership did just that for them. And now my health is deteriorating. I can’t pay my mortgage. I can’t pay my bills. And at times I do not have money for food. They did it by Lowering my Rating-Violating Insurance Code 1871.4, committing Fraud and breaking other laws. My Case went all the way to the Ca. Supreme Court. Not one judge would base their Decisions on the substantiated evidence and make a fair, just and impartial Decision as required by Judicial

Ethics. I wonder, Why? The long arm of LAUSD? Judge Cohn? The Van Nuys Workers Comp Board (VNWCAB) Trial Judge Jerold Cohn made a medical diagnosis. He is not a doctor. He changed all the facts and testimony, added his own facts, and used inadmissible evidence. He changed those facts. He refused to give Dr. Silverman’s medical reports to Dr. Stalberg as the Workers’ Comp Appeal Board requested 4/1/2011. He delayed my case, maligned my character, and libeled me throughout all of his Findings, Opinions and Decisions. Judge Cohn went after me with a vengeance, vile and disgusting statements. Dr. Stalberg’s 2005 Medical Report gave me a 100% Rating-credible and cooperative too. The Workers’ Comp Appeals Board in 2011 deemed Dr. Stalberg’s 2008 Medical Report unsubstantiated. My case was sent back to Judge Cohn to have Dr. Silverman’s, the Rheumatologist, medical records sent to Dr. Stalberg. Judge Cohn refused. Judge Cohn refused, made his own medical diagnosis and changed the facts again. He found a willing “Partner in Crime” Dr. John Stalberg. He changed all the facts to adopt Judge Cohn’s medical diagnosis. LAUSD paid Dr. Stalberg $16,770 – that’s $700 a page - for his 2011 Medical Report. Dr. Stalberg hadn’t seen me, talked to me, or examined me for 4 years. He admitted under Oath, in 2012 that he didn’t even have all the medical records, or the evidence to prove Judge Cohn’s medical diagnosis. And he didn’t care. Another “Partner in Crime” was Dr. Alvin Markowitz who did a stethoscope exam to determine Fibromyalgia instead of the standard pressure point exam. No ethical doctor uses a stethoscope to determine Fibromyalgia. Criminal Fraud, Corruption and Injustice - that’s my Ca. Workers’ Comp Case. I will be more than happy to provide any of the documented evidence that you would like to see. Millions of Ca. Injured Workers experience the same criminal corruption in their California Workers’ Comp Cases. Please help to Save Lives and Change the Laws. It’s time for All Workers, All Injured Workers’ to Unite. UNITED WE CAN WIN! Thank you again, Rozy Press Los Angeles, CA

New Officers for Catholic Charities Auxiliary Chapter II

Catholic Charities Auxiliary. Due to her health concerns, Mary said that she could no longer continue as Director of Chapter II. Assistant Director Diane Halal presented Mary with a beautiful framed portrait of Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, so that she could look at Mary while she

prayed the rosary while on her bed. New Director Laurie Bois presented a rosary to Mary that she was in the process of completing for her. Everyone joined in praying a decade of the rosary for Mary. Parishioners today may not know that Mary O’ Hara and her husband Jim

O’Hara were founding members of St. Irenaeus Church and School and were active in the church for over 50 years. They were parents of six children who all attended Catholic schools and had 20 grandchildren. Even though she was busy raising her children and supporting her husband with his many activities while he lived, Mary O’Hara was an active member of Catholic Charities Auxiliary Chapter II for over 25 years. Mary served as Director or Assistant Director of Chapter II for many of those years. She was very successful planning for fundraisers that would generate donations for Catholic Charities of Orange County. Knowing that Catholic Charities assists people who are in need of help, Mary said that she will continue to advise members and assist them with fundraisers for as long as she is able to do so. Mary O’Hara inspires everyone to use all their talents to help the less fortunate. Although she is bedridden, she uses the telephone to solicit donations and keep in contact with members. She also sends out typewritten reminders about upcoming meetings and also to solicit more donations. Because of her example and her leadership, Chapter II members continue to raise funds for Catholic Charities of Orange County.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
