Newly Promoted Commander Patrick Maxwell Honored at City Council Meeting
Editorial Transparency in Our Local Government
By Kristin Grafft Patrick Maxwell was honored at the Norwalk City Council meeting on Tuesday, July 16 for his dedicated service to the Norwalk community after his promotion to commander of the sheriff's South Patrol Division. Maxwell served the past six years as captain of the Norwalk sheriff's station and has been with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for 27 years. Mayor Luigi Vernola described Maxwell as someone who cares deeply about community service. One of Maxwell’s many accomplishments within the community has been the youth intervention PRIDE program, which he initiated nearly 10 years ago when he

It appears that the November 5th election for three Hawaiian Gardens City Council seats is going to be a crowded affair based upon early interest by challengers who began the official nomination process this week to secure a place on the ballot with city officials. Voters will be selecting three city council members that are currently being held by City Councilwoman Michi Oyama Canada, Councilman Reynaldo “Rey” Rodriguez and Councilman Barry Bruce. All three incumbents have indicated that they will be seeking reelection and this week two of them, Canada and Rodriguez pulled their official nomination papers, along with at least four people who want to take their seats this fall.
ot in Cerritos. Old Guard Cerritos elected officials have had a long and well-documented history of extravagancy coupled with loose fiscal management. Whether it be lavish trips and $65 halibut dinners or getting paid for trip mileage while receiving a $500 monthly car allowance, Cerritos residents often find themselves in the dark on what council is spending. Recently, Hews Media Group-Community News was shocked to find out that, when presented a public records request for emails written by Cerritos city council on a certain subject, council members were using, and have been using, their own private emails and personal cell phones to conduct city business. Even more shocking, the City does not keep the emails therefore all communications are not subject to a public records request. That’s right. All email communications by Cerritos publicly elected officials are not subject to a public records request. The California's Public Records Act is clear. Any city business, regardless of device or method of transmission, is public record. Except in Cerritos, and other corrupt cities such as San Diego. HMG-CN asked for and received personal emails related to the Assessor Noguez story, which showed massive property reductions and led to the arrest of the Assessor and three others. HMG-CN asked for and received personal emails related to Rick Caruso property reductions at the Americana, which showed Caruso taking a massive tax reduction check that belonged to Nordstroms. HMG-CN asked for and received personal emails related to Wendy Greuel, which showed Ms. Greuel campaigning during regular buisness hours.

Central Basin Nixes $350K in Proposed Contracts Challengers Line Up to to Ex-Senator Polanco and Sacramento Firm Take on Incumbents in Hawaiian Gardens Council Race CANCELLATION A RESULT OF INFORMATION CONTAINED IN HEWS MEDIA GROUP PUBLIC RECORDS REQUEST.
By Randy Economy and Brian Hews The questioning of information contained in public records obtained by Hews Media Group-Community News have stopped the award of two questionable contracts, valued at over $315,000, between the Central Basin Municipal Water District, former California State Senator Richard Polanco, and a Sacramento based political-lobbying firm. In the documents, Polanco’s firm, Tre Es Consultants, as well as the Sacramento based Political Strategies, Inc., were both being recommended by CBMWD officials to be given the ‘State Legislative Advocacy Services
Contract’ at a meeting of the board of directors at the Commerce based agency. The contracts stated that Polanco’s was to be the ‘lead consultant representing both firms.’ District officials have been shopping for politically connected consultants in Sacramento during the past few months ever since they cut ties with ex-California State Assemblyman Tom Calderon who collected what is believed to be more than $1 million in taxpayer funds over the past several years. Calderon is believed to one of the central figures in a massive criminal probe by members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in connection with a complex bid rigging scheme. Polanco served as a member of both the California State Assembly and California State Senate for more than two decades representing a

Neighbors Accuse Local Wal-Mart Stores in Cerritos and La Palma of ‘Violating Laws’
By Brian Hews Residents in both Cerritos and La Palma have voiced vocal concerns since the construction of two new Wal-Marts opened in both municipalities during the past four months. Residents who live on De Vries Lane and Verner Drive in La Palma say that a new Wal-Mart Grocery Store built next to their homes has interrupted their quality of life and are upset about being awakened by early morning and late-night delivery trucks since the store opened May 10. Residents of Cerritos also have also reached out to Hews Media Group-Community News saying that the recently completed facility at the popular Cerritos Towne Center at Bloomfield Avenue and Artesia Boulevard has created a “dangerous traffic hazard” because store trucks skirting parking laws by pulling up next to the red “Fire Lane” curbs to unload in the alley behind Walmart. La Palma city officials confirmed that the new store could be in violation of the city's strict noise ordinance and have set plans to meet with Walmart after residents complained at the last City Council meeting. Rene Buchanan, a La Palma resident who's been vocal about the disturbances said, "I want to see some movement to stop this practice so they can be good neighbors, I like Walmart.” A Cerritos resident who did not want to be identified, but sent pictures to HMGCN, said “you can clearly see the truck is parked on the red painted curb. My daughter and I witness some cars almost having multiple accidents. Fire Station #30 fire vehicles were just down the road and parked in the next parking area near the theaters. They must have seen this and to no avail did nothing.” “Are the Cerritos Sheriff and the Fire Station being told to look the other way when it comes to Walmart? Why are they allowed to stack up wood pallets inside their loading and un-loading dock? La Palma city code prohibits loud

noises between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Walmart's permit also states in no uncertain terms that deliveries cannot be made during those hours. Cerritos also has a noise ordinance, and according to Code Enforcement, the hours are tailored to each individual store that opens in the city. Between May 1 and 27, La Palma’s Code Enforcement Office received 10 complaints about after-hour deliveries. No complaints have been lodged with Cerritos Code Enforcement or the Sheriff’s office. La Palma officials said the city has not ticketed Walmart but wants to work with Walmart to ensure all drivers know the times they are allowed to make deliveries. Charlie Ochoa, manager of the La Palma Walmart, said he's been communicating with Walmart drivers to not arrive before 7 a.m. The store also has ordered a sign stating delivery hours, due in the coming weeks. "This is a brand new store,” Ochoa said, “we are striving to follow the city code," he said. The store manager for Cerritos could not be reached for comment.

Daniel Fierro, a challenger in the November 5th ABC Unified School District Board of Education election has raised more than $20,000 in campaign donations, his committee announced this week. Fierro, a resident of Cerritos, is facing incumbents Linda Johnson, Olympia Chen, and James Kang. Johnson and Chen have confirmed to Hews Media Group – Community News that they will be seeking reelection, while Kang has been mum about his fall plans. Fierro said in an interview that he is running to “bring together community members from all parts of the ABC Unified School District in a grassroots campaign for new leadership on the ABC School Board.” Fierro is a current Field Representative to California State Assemblyman Ian Calderon, who represents the 57th District. Fierro, in his mid-20, also rolled out a list of Democratic Party elected officials and community leaders to members of the media. He claims support from Senator Ed Hernandez, O.D.; Assembly member Ian C. Calderon; Assembly member Anthony Rendon; Assembly member Sally Morales Havice (Ret.); Cerritos City Councilmember Joseph Cho; Cerritos College Trustee Sandra Salazar as well as former Cerritos College Trustee Eric Gutierrez. “That such a diverse group of community and regional leaders have endorsed me this early in the campaign is very humbling,” said Fierro. “I think it demonstrates the strength of our campaign’s core message. I want to continue ABC’s push for improved student performance across the district, support our teachers in order to support students, and bring a renewed energy and leadership to the school board.”

Cerritos College Postpones Urgent Staffing Decision By Kristin Grafft Finalizing two new job positions at Cerritos College has become an “urgent matter as the next school year approaches. At this week’s Cerritos College Board of Trustees meeting, officials needed to decide on job descriptions for two new classified employee positions; the Dean of Student Services and the Director of Financial Services. Instead of finalizing a new agreement,
ď€ ď€ ď€ ď€ ď€
Trustees this past Wednesday (July 17) voted to postpone the topic until August. Superintendent/President Dr. Linda Lacy explained the situation as, “this is merely approving a job description for the Dean of Student Services that’s a very needed position, and we have a vacancy to fill and it has existing funding already available to it. Lacy also said that the Assistant Director of Financial Services position is totally funded with non-district funding required. However, Trustee John Paul Drayer voiced concerns about Lacy’s statement and he made a motion to move the issue to the next meeting. “I just need more information and a full board so we can have all our questions answered, Drayer said. who was not present at the meeting, had called to request the “professional courtesyâ€? of moving the matter to the August 14th meeting so she could participate in the discussion. Trustees Bob Arthur and Dr. Shin Liu opposed Drayer and the motion in what they called a “time-sensitivityâ€? of the issue. Liu explained that if they postpone it for a “whole month school will already be starting and no one will be applying for jobs. They won’t be able to fill the position.â€? Amna “AJâ€? Jara has been covering the vacated position while still managing the responsibilities of her own job as Coordinator of Student Activities. AJ was not at the meeting on Tuesday night, however many spoke on her behalf and urged “concernsâ€? about the situation. Dr. Lacy explained, “In the Dean of Student Services position, the interim director (AJ) has indicated to us that she’s tired and she will do this on a very limited basis. There’s been a vacancy in that area for over a year and a half. Knowing that, even if we approve the job description today we still have to do a full statewide recruitment for this position and do a hiring committee, so we’re probably still looking at October and November, and she’s indicated she really wanted to be out by August 19. But Dr. Johnson had convinced her to at least stay through this process.â€? Juan Ramirez, the Associated Student Body President, told Hews Media GroupCommunity News after the meeting in an interview that, “AJ has been doing a twoman job and carrying a lot of weight. So now she wants to go back to her old job.â€? Ramirez then added, “Anyone else probably could not have been able to handle that amount of responsibilities, but she’s a really strong person‌ But now it’s time for the college to take the initiative and hire that other personâ€? Other officials during the meeting also commented that “AJ is stressed out to the maxâ€? and that they should at least help her out and get her some staff, even if it is temporary. Although Board Vice President Avalos agreed that something “should be done to help out AJ,â€? she still insisted that the board be respectful of the two missing members by postponing the item. The newly appointed Student Trustee, Lance Makinano, was not happy with Alvalos’ comments and retorted, “We’re talking about something very crucial here and in my opinion this is going to send the wrong message to the students.â€? Makinano added, “There’s been some negative feedback on some decisions and we’ve been trying to calm the storm, but if we’re going to send this out now, that this is not a priority and we may be leaderless in September, this is not going to look good for this board. Students are not going to

say this is okay. What’s the priority here? Is it the students or is two board members that couldn’t make it to this meeting? However, Avalos maintained her stance and took it to a vote. She and Drayer voted in favor of the motion while Arthur and Liu voted against it. Due to the tie, Trustees could not take a “formal action on the item that night. A special meeting was suggested to address the issue as soon as all seven elected Trustees could attend. Trustee Robert “Bob Hughlett of Cerritos was not in attendance at the meeting, as was Board Clerk Dr. Sandra Salazar who recently gave birth to a baby boy. HMG-CN will have additional updates on this situation and will provide coverage of the special meeting as soon as it announced on line at www.loscerritosnews. net. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be August 14 at 6:30 p.m.

Perez to negotiate and enter into one-year agreements with Political Solutions, LLC and Tres Es Consulting “for the provision of State Legislative Advocacy Services.”
Polanco and Tami Miller, a high powered political lobbyist and advisor would have both banked $158,400 if the contracts would have been approved. District officials also had the name of Richard Polanco as being the lead consultant to be representing both firms, but according to CBMWD spokesman Richard Legaspi, Polanco name was “incorrectly inserted as being the consultant” on both projects. “Mr. Polanco has no affiliation with Politicial Strategies, his name on both contract proposals was in error,” Le-

Calls into Political Strategies, Inc. in Sacramento were not returned. Central Basin Municipal Water District is currently the subject of at least two
massive criminal probes by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as well as the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office. Recently, the offices of California State Senator Ronald Calderon had his office in Sacramento raided by FBI agents. Former Assemblyman Tom Calderon, the brother of Senator Ronald Calderon, had previously been granted more than $1 million in consulting contracts with Central Basin Municipal Water District over a several year span.

A public records request by HMG-CN pertaining to Cedillo’s grades and if he graduated was refused by CBMWD attorneys citing Government Code Section 6255 which states, “the public interests served by non-disclosure clearly outweighs the public interest served by disclosure of the records.” The firm also cited privacy laws in revealing the grades. Legaspi also confirmed that Cedillo Jr. will not be “responsible” for paying back the public tuition doled out by taxpayers. “Mr. Cedillo, Jr., does not have to pay Central Basin Water Municipal District back the tuition, per our Professional Development Assistance Program.” A replacement for Cedillo has not been made public.

The Central Basin Municipal Water District has cut its ties with Gilbert Cedillo, Jr., who oversaw Business Development for the embroiled public agenGil Cedillo Jr. cy just days after Hews Media Group – Community News published details of how taxpayers picked up $22,000 in tuition costs for him to attend an elite private university here in Southern California. CBMWD spokesman Joseph Legaspi confirmed that Cedillo, Jr. was officially relieved of his job in which he earned $112,970 annually. That does not include medical and retirement benefits. Cedillo, Jr. is the son of Los Angeles City Councilman Gilbert Cedillo, Sr. His father is considered by many to be one of the most powerful and influential political figures in East Los Angeles. Legaspi confirmed in interviews that Cedillo Jr. will “no longer be associated with Central Basin Municipal Water District as of July 31st 2013.” HMG-CN has also confirmed that Cedillo, Jr. was offered and accepted a severance package “per the district admin-

Cedillo Jr., wrote on his initial application form that he wanted “to continue my education and learn the most effective methods at becoming a great leader and manager.” “I will also be fulfilling the terms and conditions of my employment by enrolling in this program per GM Art Aguilar’s requirement. The start date is July 24, 2012,” Cedillo Jr. stated in the Professional Development Authorization application. Cedillo said that his anticipated graduation date is in October 2013.

On July 5th, HMG-CN published records showing that taxpayers have paid more than $22,000 so Cedillo Jr. could complete his college education at the Christian based Azusa Pacifica University in the East San Gabriel Valley area. It was documented that Cedillo Jr. was taking 39 units during four terms at Azusa Pacific during the 2012- 13 years to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership/Applied Management. Cedillo Jr. was rarely seen at work for the past several months by employees and elected directors of the district, but still collected his six-figure salary. Copies of checks written to Azusa Pa-

Barrows and Chen attended at the posh Ranch Bernardo Inn on Cerritos’ dime, even though Cerritos is not an “independent” city. Sources tell HMG-CN that Barrows talked more about the Orange Line than Cerritos. The current Cerritos policy is not a simple technical violation of complex legal requirements but a widespread and concerted effort to prevent Cerritos residents from having access to basic government dealings. Fundamentally failing to fulfill even basic government duties, the Cerritos council have engaged in a systematic program to hide records from the public. It is your choice Cerritos city council, full transparency or not. My bet is… Not in Cerritos.
EDITORIAL
Continued from page 1 Greuel even said that, “I mixed up my personal and business emails.” Yet Cerritos tells HMG-CN that they do not keep any city council emails because they all use their private email accounts. Talk about the fox guarding the hen house. Are they exempt from the California's Public Records Act? Absolutely not. Elected Assessor Noguez’ was not. Niether was Caruso’s or Greuel’s. But the Cerritos council acts like they are exempt. The council talks a good game about transparency, posting the one-page dining reimbursement policy online after we exposed Carol Chen, Bruce Barrows, and Jim Edwards eating $65 steaks and $20 desserts, but they do not follow through on overall transparency. This use of personal email accounts by Cerritos city council to conduct city business should raise some very serious concerns. HMG-CN calls for the council to pass a formal policy forbidding the use of personal email accounts for city business. Furthermore, the policy should state that any and all past communication including databases, spreadsheets, calendar entries, appointments, and notes which reside in part or in whole on any City computer or any other electronic system or equipment should be made public. What could be their objection? HMG-CN also calls on the residents of Cerritos to get involved and voice your opinion at the next city council meeting. It is either that or allow council to travel to meaningless meetings, like last weeks Independent Cities Association that

The program is described as being “designed to educate kids between the ages of 12-16 of the choices they are making in life and the road those choices are going to lead them.” In a statement by Maxwell he described the highlight of his career as seeing Marcos Orozco, a young man whom he had arrested three years ago, take part in La Mirada High School's graduation ceremony. Orozco’s life was turned around after participating in the PRIDE program. As sheriff’s commander, Maxwell will now be overseeing operation in 6 cities, including Norwalk. Maxwell said he gives his 100% full support to his replacement, Captain Curtis Jensen. The newly appointed captain was also

present at the City council meeting and said, “I stand before you humbled… It does not go unnoticed by me that I have big shoes to fill.” Jensen commented that he would work on what is left to do in the city, but Maxwell has already done so much. Jensen ended his comments by saying, “I consider myself perhaps the luckiest captain in the world right now - to be given this incredible privilege, to serve with these great men and women at Norwalk Sheriff Station and to be welcomed into this great community in Norwalk. And I so look forward to working with all of you.”
CANDIDATES
Continued from page 1 City Clerk Sue Underwood told Hews Media Group-Community News on Wednesday that three challengers have started gathering the necessary 20 signatures on petitions to secure a place on the ballot. The challengers include Phil Ahn, Priscilla Kwan, and Valerie Mason. Underwood also indicated that residents Mariana Rios and Adrian Avilar have scheduled appointments with her to pick up nomination packets. Incumbent City Councilman Barry Bruce, who is a Pastor at the Way Out Ministries in Hawaiian Gardens is expected to seek another term on the city council, sources tells HMG-CN. Underwood said that residents who want to run have until 5 p.m. on August 9 to complete the nomination process. If one of the three incumbents decides not to run, then a five day extension period will go into effect per California state election laws. “We encourage anyone who wants to
run, to please do so,” Underwood said, and that no filing fee is required to run. Underwood also said that a $600 deposit will be required by any candidate who wishes to have a statement placed in the official sample ballot that is sent to all registered voters in Hawaiian Gardens. The sample ballots will be printed in English, Spanish and Korean. For more information please call the City Clerk’s Office at (562) 420 2641 ext. 251.
Bellflower Hosting Blood Drive Challenge By Justin Cooley Bellflower will be hosting its 4th Annual City Blood Challenge in the Green Room at Bellflower City Hall, on Thursday, August 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Red Cross claims that in a 30 minute time frame a single person could save over three people. The organization is concerned that the number of donations and blood given is down by over 10%, “resulting in 50,000 fewer pints of blood than expected.” The Red Cross Organization has been hosting blood transfusion drives for the last 50 years and highly encourages the community members to make the difference by taking part in Bellflower’s annual blood drive event. For more information call Wendy Thomas at (562) 804-1424 ext. 2266 or email WJBCA@bellflower.org.

La Mirada Civic Theater: A Quirky Midsummer Saturday Night’s Fever Dream By Kristin Grafft A Midsummer Saturday Night’s Fever Dream is a clever musical theater adaptation of Shakespeare’s already strange and amusing Midsummer Night’s Dream. Filled with songs from Saturday Night Fever and witty pop culture references, L.A.’s Troubadour Theater Company (also known as “The Troubies”) gives this quirky classic an energetic and crazy spin at the La Mirada Theater for the Performing Arts. Although the “Troubie” style can be slightly overdramatic, the actors definitely keep your attention throughout the long show with off the cuff banter and jokes, often throwing things like “we are the 99 percent” and “shake weights” into their performance. Part of what makes the show so much fun is in seeing how much fun the actors are having, often making themselves and each other laugh at their own jokes while on stage. Director Matt Walker, who at one time graduated from the Ringling Bros. Clown College, utilizes his goofy acrobatic skills as he plays Puck and Quince. Walker did
an exceptional job with his slapstick humor and improvisation keeping the audience, and quite often the band, laughing throughout the show. However, shy attendees should beware of sitting in the front row or showing up late. The cast’s spontaneous and interactive style also includes calling out audience members through witty song and dance. As a group of late-comers tried to silently slip into their seats mid-scene on opening night the entire cast immediately dropped what they were doing and broke into an amusing version of “You’re so Vain” modified to “You’re so Late.” The cast also got up close and personal with many audience members in the first few rows during various scenes and even invited the audience to join them on stage to dance in one of the final numbers. All in all “A Midsummer Saturday Night’s Fever Dream” was another successfully crafted work of entertainment from the Troubadour Theater Company.

Despite a long journey down a road of success that led to qualifying for the Western Nationals this year, the Norwalk Girls 10u Softball team still faces a much bigger challenge, and it doesn’t include bats and gloves. If the team cannot raise enough money to send their girls to the national championship in the next two weeks, they won’t be able to go. The Norwalk Girls 10u Softball team found themselves placing in six tournaments throughout the season, coming in second within the district and qualifying with another local team, La Mirada, for nationals at the state competition in Lancaster. Even with an incredibly impressive season, the team’s time to celebrate was ultimately cut short. Despite qualifying for the competition, the team will be unable to go if they can’t raise the funds for the girls within the next two weeks. The team needs to raise over $10,000 in order for the entire team to go. The cost isn’t cheap. Sending off each girl and a parent is going to be over $660. The money will include food, lodging, and entrance into the competition. This will be the first time the 10u Norwalk Girls Softball team will ever be attending the national competition. The National Championship will be held in Peoria, Arizona from July 31st to August 4th. The Norwalk League has come a long way from its standing just a few years ago. After coaching for six year, Coach Mike Ritcharoen, has been able to transform
Cerritos Transit System service changes planned The Cerritos City Council recently awarded a contract to First Transit, Incorporated to operate and maintain the Cerritos on Wheels (COW) and Dial-A-Ride transit services. As part of the new contract, the City’s transit services will be adjusted for increased efficiency and reduced operational costs. Effective July 1, the Dial-A-Ride service will be provided by A White and Yellow Taxi Company, as a subcontractor to First Transit. Taxis will provide patrons with more flexibility and responsiveness in scheduling their trips. The taxis will be six-passenger, wheelchair-accessible vans with a doormounted logo that identifies the vehicle as a certified Dial-A-Ride operator. The Dial-A-Ride service is offered for Cerritos seniors age 55 or older and people with disabilities.

Over his six years of coaching, he’s been able to bring up the league from playing in the C to B division and has helped create new leadership throughout the league through incentives and working together. Richaroen believes that “sticking and working together as a team is the main factor in becoming a successful team.” At the beginning of each season, he brings together the parents and players
alike through a simple ideal. “To be successful as a team, we must keep a unity within. For this team to grow and win, we must be all on the same page. Not one girl is more important than the other; we are a team. Every girl on this team plays an important roll and purpose. Do not single out your daughter and do not single out other on the team. Let’s keep a certain moral within this team, this is and what will make us successful. We walk on thin waters

NEWS AND NOTES FROM PRESS ROW Artesia Punishers 18-Gold team invited to Premier Girls Fastpitch National Championships By Loren Kopff In an unexpected move, but one that will greatly be appreciated, Bob Medina is heading back to a National Championship tournament. He will be taking his Artesia Punishers 18-Gold travel softball team to the Premier Girls Fastpitch National Championships, to be played from July 28-Aug. 3 in Huntington Beach. In just the 4th year the PGF has been around, this is the first time Medina will be taking a team to the PGF National Championships. The last time a Medinacoached Punishers team played for a national championship was 2010 when they were in the USA/Amateur Softball Association 18-Under ‘A’ National Championships in Hemet. Medina won a national title in 2007 when his team competed in the USA/ASA 18-Under ‘A’ National Championships in College Station, TX. “We got a special invitation to PGF and it’s one of the tournaments right here in Huntington Beach,” Medina said. “Since they started, we’ve been trying to go there and there only. We don’t go out of state to qualify, so we have one or two shots to do it. They want the best teams over there, so they gave us an opportunity.” Since the PGF formed, Medina has taken his teams to many PGF qualifiers in hopes of staying home and playing for another national title instead of going out of state. But each time, including twice in June, he has been unsuccessful. The Punishers went 4-2 in the PGF Southern California qualifier June 14-16, then went 1-2 in the Las Vegas qualifier two weeks later in the final chance that teams can qualify for this season. Medina also took a team to the 2008 USA/ASA 18-Under ‘A’ National Championships in Moline, IL. Since last Thursday, his team has played in 10 games in preparation of the PGF National Championships. “The 2007 National Championship was great,” Medina said. “It was overwhelming and to this day we know every play that probably went on. It still goes on in our mind. But, we took it upon our-
selves to focus more on scholarships and we’ve been doing that. Almost every single kid in the 18-Under group is getting a scholarship for the Punishers. “I think, after so many years, we’re getting the hunger again,” he added. “We are really getting the hunger. We want to start pursuing it next year. I think we’ll go 100 percent after it no matter where we have to go.” In other Artesia Punishers news, the 12-Under team coached by Danny Guerrero made a strong run in the loser’s bracket of the Triple Crown World Series in San Diego, winning five straight games. But that run came to an end last Saturday with a 3-1 loss to the (Hacienda Heights) Firecrackers. Still, the Punishers finished in fifth place out of 45 teams in the gold bracket and were three wins away from playing for a championship. After going undefeated in pool play action, the Punishers opened the bracket portion with a 3-2 loss to the (Camarillo) Combat Panthers on July 11. Then, the team posted consecutive victories over the Temecula-based The Next Level (7-4), (Mission Viejo) OC Elite (7-5), (Bellflower) No Doubt (6-0), (Wilmington) USA Athletics (3-2) and (Trabuco Canyon) California Cruisers (72).The 12-Under Punishers will participate in the PGF National Championships beginning on July 28. The 18-Under team coached by Higinio Valdez spent last week in the Champions Cup in Irvine, a college showcase tournament. After getting shutout in the first three games of pool play action, his team rebounded to post three straight shutouts to finish in fourth place in its pool. Last Saturday afternoon, in the single elimination playoff bracket, the Punishers blanked the Central California Krush 7-0, then edged the California Breeze 5-4 and ended the evening getting past Team Florida 8-7. This past Sunday, the Punishers were eliminated by the Power Surge 3-1. Next up for the team is an appearance in the USA/ASA ‘A” Western Nationals in Bakersfield, beginning on July 30. Finally, the 14-Under team coached by Mondo Canizales will begin pool play action in the Triple Crown World Series in Reno on Monday against the Washington Angels and the MV Shockwave. On Tuesday, his team will play the California Quakes and California Crossfire.

This time, the Punishers hosted the Shanghai National team for three games last weekend at East Los Angeles College. The Shanghai National team is composed of 18 girls ranging in ages from 17-31. The older players are from the East China University of Political Science and Law while the younger players are from the Shanghai Sports School. This was the first time since 2010 that the team from China had played a team from the United States and the third time overall. In 2010, the team played a couple of colleges from California. “[The Artesia Punishers] were very impressive,” said Shanghai head coach Sun Jie, through his interpreter Marlin Lee. “We had heard about them winning a national championship and two state championships. We were especially impressed with their left handed pitcher.” For the Punishers and head coach Bob Medina, this was the second time this year they had played a team from outside the country. Earlier in the spring, the Punishers played a team from Peru. In February of 2009, Medina’s 18-Under team at that time, along with the Cerritos Girls Softball Association, hosted the Calgary Diamond Devils for two days at Artesia Park. “I told the girls it doesn’t matter how old they are,” Medina said. “It doesn’t matter that they are the Shanghai National

Following a strikeout, center fielder Samantha Edmiston (Lakewood High School) reached on a rare error by Shanghai and pitcher Sydney Overly (North Torrance High School/Boston University) doubled in a pair of runs. The Punishers would get two more hits off of Zhao Xin Xing, who pitched the first three innings and the final two-plus frames. Meanwhile, the road weary visitors who played in Hawai’i before coming to Southern California, scored all eight of their runs in the top of the fifth by sending 13 players up to bat. Qu Zhen had two hits in the inning. Jie said that his team was playing these games in the U.S. to prepare for games against other national teams and to gain more experience for upcoming competition. “I feel the big difference with the Americans is their confidence, and they swing up,” Jie said. “In China and in Japan, they swing lower. Maybe the power and the strengths are a little bit different.” “This was very exciting,” said center fielder Xing Yan, who has played on the team for 10 years. The Chinese finished the game with 11 hits, four of them being doubles, while the Americans recorded eight hits. Manzo and Rodriguez each went two for three. “You cannot even put a number or a level on that,” Medina said of the way his weekend opponent plays. “Everything that we talked about [with the team] went on. It was basically following their footsteps and watching how their approach to

the game is. “You could see that they’re very disciplined and that’s the one thing that we’re probably going to walk away with,” he later added. This past Monday, the Punishers notched an 8-7 win. Jie said that his team spent most of the down time shopping at some of the outlet malls around Southern California. While they didn’t go to the most popular attractions like Disneyland or Knott’s Berry Farm, they did go to Universal Studios following the last game. They flew back to China this past Tuesday. “I like the nice weather and shopping,” Yan said. As for the future, Jie has already invited Medina to come to Shanghai next October to play in a tournament that will last over a week. “When you go play a team from out of state in a tournament…you’re honored to play somebody outside the state or far away,” Medina said. “When you get the opportunity to play somebody out of the country, it’s priceless. We’ve done it four times. I believe for these kids here, it was a great opportunity. They’ll remember it for the rest of their lives because we remembered the first time.” As far as softball in the future for the Summer Olympic Games, which has been absent since Beijing hosted the Olympics in 2008, Jie believes that the sport, as well as baseball, will return in time for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in which Japan is one of the three final countries to be considered as a host. Japan defeated the U.S. 3-1 in the gold medal game in Beijing, the only time the U.S. softball team has lost in the gold medal game. “We are looking forward to having the United States combine with China to push baseball and softball [back] into the

CFC Liverpool teams dominate Copa Cabana Beach Soccer Tournament By Loren Kopff BELMONT SHORE-The Cerritos Football Club (CFC) Liverpool club soccer teams haven’t played in too many beach soccer tournaments. But when they do, they seem to bring home a championship. Such was the case this past Sunday when the Under 15 team easily won all four games in its age group to win the Copa Cabana Beach Soccer Tournament on the sand at Belmont Shore for the second time in three years. Head coach Joul Farah’s team, which was actually playing up in the Under 16 age group, breezed past the SC Elite 11-0 and the Eclipse 12-0 last Saturday and crushed the Lynwood Fierce 13-1 before claiming the tournament title for the age group after a 7-1 victory over Kaos. “The girls looked like they really have the experience [of being here],” Farah said. “There was no pressure. They’re having a good time; they’re having fun and it’s becoming easy for them. They’re performing really well.” In 2011, Farah’s Under 13 squad competed in this same tournament and he split his team in half, each playing in a pool of three teams. The “red” team won by scores of 10-1 and 7-1 in pool play action while the “black” team was victorious by 7-2 and 10-2 results. After both teams posted identical 9-1 semifinal wins, the black team defeated the red team 5-2 in the championship game. Farah said he did not coach that game but was still in attendance. In fact, every time the CFC Liverpool has competed in a beach tournament, which also includes four trips to the Hun-

tington Beach Tournament, his squad has played a year up from its own age group. Farah’s oldest daughter and former St. Joseph High standout, Natalie, took her Under 11 team to the Copa Cabana Beach Soccer Tournament and was one win away from winning her age group. Last Saturday, the Under 11 team doubled up United Chelsea 6-3 and had no problems with the Desert Fury, 7-2. The CFC Liverpool received two goals each from Eliana Mariolis and Nathaly Silva. This past Sunday, the team crushed the Desert Divas 8-2 before falling to the United LSA 3-2 in a winner-take-all game. “We played with a lot of heart,” Natalie Farah said. “And, there’re having a lot of fun.” In 2011, Natalie Farah’s Under 9 team won this tournament by outscoring its four opponents by a combined 41-9 score. She says that there aren’t too many adjustments in terms of getting used to playing on the beach as opposed to playing on grass. She added that if anything, it forces the girls to think a little bit quicker. “It helps them with conditioning and most importantly, it’s fun for them,” Natalie Farah said. “It’s a good break for them off the grass. We’re able to put people in different positions and try different things.” Beach soccer is played five on five with 30 x 40 yard field dimensions for older age groups (25 x 35 for the younger groups). There are three periods of 12 minutes and there aren’t too many fouls or penalties. “All over the world they play beach soccer,” Joul Farah said. “That’s how they work on their skills and their touches. It’s very popular. We do it basically for the girls to have a weekend of fun. That’s the only reason.” This weekend, the Under 15 team will be competing in the 28th United States Futsal National Championship, an indoor tournament, at the Long Beach Convention Center. The team, playing up again, will have a pair of games today and one on Saturday with the possibility of another one Sunday afternoon. In addition, Joul Farah adds that the team will be looking for new players next month for the upcoming 2013-2014 season. pitals program award winners. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept cashier's checks drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state. Said sale will be made, in an ''AS IS'' condition, but without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to satisfy the indebtedness secured by said Deed of Trust, advances thereunder, with interest as provided, and the unpaid principal of the Note secured by said Deed of Trust with interest thereon as provided in said Note, plus fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-281-8219 or visit this Internet Web site www.recontrustco.com, using the file number assigned to this case 12-0053960. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
