he Palms, Steven’s Steakhouse, The Dal Rae, The Vintage, The Turf Terrace. They are some of the most elegant, exclusive, and expensive dining Gil Cedillo Jr. rooms in Los Angeles. A steak can cost as much as $65, and that doesn’t account for additional ‘toppers’ of bleu cheese crumbles, mushrooms and grilled onions at $6 dollars a spoonful. But for Gilbert Cedillo Jr., a former executive with the Central Basin Municipal Water District, dining and enjoying expensive steaks and ‘toppers’ at these restaurants was almost an everyday occurrence. Receipts obtained via a public records request by Hews Media Group-Community News document how Cedillo Jr. spent more than $15,000 over a 23-month period to wine and dine private consultants; consultants who landed hundreds of thousands of dollars in contracts, some overseen by Cedillo, Jr. himself. INTERVIEW WITH LA COUNTY SHERIFF’S CANDIDATE PAUL TANAKA By Randy Economy Paul Tanaka is bound and determined in being elected the next Sheriff of Los Angeles County, and he has a message to his former boss, incumbent Lee Baca. Paul Tanaka “I am running to win, and I am running as hard as I can, and this campaign is going to be about talking openly and honestly with the voters of Los Angeles County” Tanaka told Hews Media Group-Community Newspaper in a sit down interview this past week in Cerritos. Next year’s already tense campaign to become the “top cop” of the County of Angels has attracted nearly a half dozen challengers to Baca, and the Primary election in 2014 is still ten months away.

Tanaka is a longtime political figure in the South Bay who has established solid local bases of supporters who he says are now “100 percent committed” behind his campaign to oust Baca. “I know why I am running, and I understand how challenging this campaign is going to become,” Tanaka said. Tanaka was born at Queen of Angels Hospital in Los Angeles and has been a lifelong resident of Gardena. Now 55 years old, the married father of two is a graduate of Gardena High School back in the Class of 1976. “I remember when I ran and won an election to become President of the Gardena High School Key Club. It was an exciting time in my early life,” Tanaka recalled. “My dad sat me down after I won and he told me, ‘The success of your year as Key Club President won’t be determined by the work you do, it will be determined by the people you have sur-

Cerritos-The ABC Education Foundation distributed 662 backpacks this year to 29 schools in the ABC Unified School District for students who are homeless or who are very low income. As part of the Foundation’s second annual backpack drive, school supplies and backpacks were purchased from the Foundation’s fundraising efforts. Schools were able to order the number of backpacks for very low income and homeless students at their school and all backpacks were delivered this week so that students will start school at ABCUSD next week with brand-new backpacks stocked with school supplies. ABC Education Foundation Vice President and Century 21 Astro realtor Mark Anthony Ruiz and Foundation Board Member Chris Apodaca from Broadview Mortgage organized the project. “This initiative really describes the

Artesia City Council Awards Infrastructure Improvement Contract By Rico Dizon The Artesia City Council awarded Patriot Paving for the South Street Pedestrian, Bikeway and Transit Improvement Project. Hui Lai and Public Works Director Chuck Burkhardt made the recommendation to the City Council following the review of sealed bids received and opened on Aug.6, 2013. The review of the above bid proposals had determined that Patriot Paving bid of $768,750 represents the lowest respon-

However, the bidder did not submit in the bid package the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) commitment forms certifying that the 10% DBE goal required by the project was fulfilled. According to Caltrans’ DBE compliance requirements, the bidder has up to 4:00 pm of the fourth business day following the bid opening to submit the required documents to fulfill the compliance goal. Patriot Paving finally submitted the required DBE forms around 3:30 pm of the bid opening day. Review of these documents indicated that the DBE goal was fully met. Dear Editor: Before you began your coverage of the Mahatma Gandhi Statue controversy, I had though of him as an Indian Nationalist who overthrew oppressive British Colonial rule through the use of non-violent protests and died in 1948, inspiring Martin Luther King Jr. to take his commitment to non-violent protest and apply it to the Civil Rights Movement here in the United States which led to the end of Jim Crow and other overly racist laws in the United States. August 26 to September 1 There were 15 Part I felony crimes investigated by members of the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station last week, down from 22 the period before. A new category has been added to this report to reflect fitness center locker burglaries as Cerritos has a major fitness center on Alondra Boulevard near the 605 Freeway and another on Del Amo Boulevard at Pioneer Boulevard. Patrol deputies responded to 299 calls for service last week down from 343 the previous week. The new 2013 weekly average in calls for service is now 302. Two robberies were reported last week. On Tuesday August 27 at 12:50 p.m. a female victim was sitting at a bus stop in the 11000 block of 183rd Street when a male suspect came up behind her, grabbed her cell phone, hit her in the eye with his fist and ran west toward the 605 Freeway. The second case occurred at 3:34 p.m. the same afternoon in the 19400 block of Pioneer Boulevard. A lone gunman entered the business and robbed the cashier of a

small amount of currency. Residential burglaries dropped again from three to one. A side garage door was kicked in on a house equipped with an alarm. All indications are that the suspect(s) fled upon activation without any property. The 2013 weekly average in residential burglaries is currently 4.4. There were no ‘”other structure”/commercial burglaries reported. Four were logged the week before. The 2013 weekly average in “other structure”/commercial burglaries is 2.7. One locker burglary was investigated. Pants and keys were stolen from the fitness center in the 10800 block of Alondra Boulevard after the lock was removed. Vehicle burglaries were also down from eight to five. Three of the new cases were from SUVs and four occurred in high-volume commercial parking lots. Tools, a battery, scooters, DVDs, keys, credit cards, cell phones and a stereo were taken. The new 2013 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 6.5. Vehicle thefts dropped from seven to four. Four were stolen from high-volume commercial parking lots. Two were Hondas, one a Toyota and one was an SUV. The 2013 weekly average in vehicle thefts is now 4.3.

The Cerritos City Council has approved the City’s participation with the City of La Palma in a shared jurisdiction street improvement project on La Palma Avenue. The City of La Palma initiated a street improvement project on La Palma Avenue within the La Palma city limits. The City of La Palma requested the City of Cerritos’ participation in the project by including the Cerritos portion of the roadway in the improvements. The Cerritos portion of the project includes the northerly portion of the segment of La Palma Avenue located between the Coyote Creek bridge and Denni Street. The project includes grinding and asphalt overlay, construction of wheelchair accessible ramps and updating the curb and gutter. The City of La Palma is the lead agency for the street improvement and awarded a contract to All American Asphalt of Corona. The Cerritos City Council authorized an expenditure of $60,500 for the Cerritos portion of the project. The street improvement is expected to be completed by mid-September.

In response to increased temperatures that are likely to occur over the next few months, the City of La Palma is prepared to activate its Cooling Centers in accordance with its Emergency Operations Plan for Extreme Heat Emergencies. Local cooling centers could be opened if the temperature in La Palma exceeds or is predicted to exceed 95 degrees over a 3-day period. During excessive heat, people with health conditions, including the elderly and children, are encouraged to take advantage of cooling centers in order to minimize the risk of a medical emergency. The general public is also encouraged to take extra precautions if they work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activates to early morning or evening. Learn the signs and

symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Always stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. Southern California Edison (SCE) is also urging the public to conserve power during excessive and prolonged hot weather. High demand for around-the-clock energy use — especially from air conditioners — could lead to failed equipment and power outages. If widespread local power outage was to occur the City of La Palma would open local cooling centers. The City of La Palma stands prepared to open local cooling centers if temperatures remain excessive or if a widespread local power outage does occur. The opening of local cooling centers by the City of La Palma will be communicated to the public through the City’s Notify Me email system and by utilizing Alert OC. jazz vocalists. It was that early exposure that sparked his love for the genre. Murphy said that Jazz allows him to express his feelings and emotions in a way that no other form of music can provide. Numerous jazz vocalists, including Marvin Gaye, Patti Labelle and Stevie Wonder, have influenced his own style of singing. While Murphy still enjoys and appreciates artists like Snoop Dogg, Drake and Lil Wayne; he isn’t fond of the indulgent culture and objectification of women that much of their music promotes. Murphy is also opposed to their prolific use of profanity and complained that he would not be able to listen to it if there were elders or children in the room. Instead, Murphy has found a way to bridge the generations together. Using his love and knowledge of music he is able to put a different twist on the otherwise crass music, by editing it and mixing it to the tune of a past era: jazz. Murphy has also become somewhat of a philanthropist now that he has ‘made it’. The money earned at his concerts is almost entirely donated back into the community and to charities, providing relief for impoverished families and those that are less fortunate. Part of the reason behind Murphy’s generosity is because he can relate to those that are in need. Before auditioning for America’s Got Talent he was barely making ends meet, working as a car washer or cutting hair for a living. But it wasn’t until everything was stolen from his car, which was also his home at the time, did he have the epiphany to audition. Murphy said he had considered auditioning for American Idol and various singing shows at other points in his life, but was always held back by the fear that he would be made fun of. But this time was different. “When I hit rock bottom it was like, what do I have to lose?” Murphy said. Murphy also said he received many signs along the way confirming that he was making the right decision. After he won, Murphy said it completely changed his life and his family’s life, but they still remember their values and their roots. “It’s cool to be known all over the world for something good,” he said. But he also added that when you leave this earth, you can’t take it with you. “It’s about loving each other and then you expire.” Recently, he has been working on a Christmas CD that will be available in October. He also plans on producing another album with some original songs on it, as well as more of the traditional jazz songs.

HMG-CN reviewed more than 40 pages from the 31-year old Cedilloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; s credit card receipts that showed he spent a great deal of time and taxpayer money in swanky LA eateries. Cedillo wined and dined Tom Calderon, who at the time, was a Board Member on a San Diego firm called Water2Save. From 2009-2012, Water2Save was paid $222,000 for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Landscape Services,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; including over $91,000 after Cedillo was hired. Calderon was also banking $11,000 per month as a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;consultantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; to CBMWD The two went to the Turf Terrace for lunch and spent $53. Cedillo Jr. enjoyed a Seagramâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gin at 2:00 in the afternoon as they dined. Calderon is a former State Assemblyman who is also laying the ground-work for a possible run for a California State Senate seat that is currently held by his brother Senator Ronald Calderon, a Democrat from Montebello. Earlier this year, FBI officials, armed with search warrants and guns raided Senator Calderonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sacramento office and carted off boxes of potential evidence in their investigation. Along with his expense account, Cedillo Jr. was paid $112,000 annually even though he did not possess a college degree. He also received $22,000 in taxpayer funds to finish his degree at the private Azusa Pacifica University. And when he drove to the airport or to seminars in Las Vegas or San Diego, he was paid 51 cents per mile, sometimes collecting over $400 for mileage. It was also revealed exclusively by HMG-CN that Cedillo Jr. oversaw the award of millions of dollars of contracts even though he had no experience or knowledge of the contracts contents. Several of those contracts were given to companies where Calderon served as a top executive. One of the very first trips Cedillo took after getting the job at CBMWD was in December 2011. Documents show that he, former CBMWD Attorney Doug Wance, and Tom Calderon attended the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tourâ&#x20AC;? at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Just hours prior to the performance Wance hosted a dinner for Calderon, Cedillo, and other executives from CBMWD at the exclusive â&#x20AC;&#x153;Strip Steak: A Michael Mina Restaurantâ&#x20AC;? that is also housed at Mandalay Bay. A closer examination of the dining receipts revealed a concerted effort to wine and dine people who had submitted bids for contracts overseen by Cedillo Jr. and CBMWD. Claudia Cruz the District Director for Senator Ronald Calderon and Cedillo Jr. enjoyed a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;traditional prime rib, with garlic mushroomsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for $66 at Rosemeadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Charley Brownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in January 2012. Cedillo and Cruz also visited the same restaurant in March of 2012 where Cedillo Jr. turned in a receipt for himself claiming a $55 reimbursement for one â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Charley Prime Ribâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lunch special. Bell Gardens Mayor Pro-Tem Sergio Infanzon and Cedillo Jr. dined frequently together. The two enjoyed a massive $193 lunch at The Los Angeles Palm on South Flower Street in late January 2012. They dined on Caesar Salad, Lettuce Wedges, and Prime New York Steaks that cost $46 and $50, respectively.

The two longtime friends and political allies also dined at Stevenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Steak House in Commerce in March, 2012, where Cedillo Jr. had a $33 Rib Eye Steak. Former CBMWD GM Art Aguilar and Cedillo, Jr. also dined frequently, going to Stevenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Steak House in Commerce. They dined on salads, prime rib, New York Steaks, mushrooms, and onions that totaled $125 and $88. Cedillo also had a $145 dinner with Toni DeAztlan to â&#x20AC;&#x153;discuss district mattersâ&#x20AC;? at the Vintage CafĂŠ on Bright Avenue in Uptown Whittier in April, 2012. Toni DeAztlan was the daughter of Tizoc DeAztlan; Tizoc was awarded a $40,000 contract under extremely questionable circumstances, the award process overseen by Cedillo Jr. Toni DeAztlan signed her own agreement, again overseen by Cedillo Jr., for â&#x20AC;&#x153;Election Selection Servicesâ&#x20AC;? in November 2011 for $25,000. Tom Calderon and Cedillo frequented the Dal Rae in Pico Rivera and spent $243 at two different lunches. Both dined on prime steaks and left $39 in tips to the wait staff.

Tanaka has not forgotten that conversation with his father some nearly 40 years ago and said that he has applied that mantra as a local elected official and now as a candidate for Sheriff. After Gardena High School, Tanaka, who is a Baptist in faith, enrolled at the Loyola Marymount University in the Culver City/West Los Angeles area that is owned and operated by the Roman Catholic Church. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had the best education and had the best of both worlds at Loyola Marymount,â&#x20AC;? Tanaka said. He said he still keeps in contact with many of this past school mates from both high school and college and have relied on their loyal support for years. Tanaka and Baca both began their professional careers in the Artesia/Cerritos community. Baca was a former teacher at Faye Ross Junior High School in Artesia and Tanakaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first job was around a mile away at a Certified Public Accounting Firm on the corner of Marquardt Avenue and Artesia Boulevard. Since then Baca and Tanaka have been on similar career paths climbing the political ladder at the LA County Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department side by side. Now the two are fierce rivals. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The only time I have seen Lee since I left the department was a couple of months ago a trial in Downtown LA where we were both testifying. We did exchange a hand shake, but that was it,â&#x20AC;? Tanaka said. Tanaka has built an impressive team of early supporters and donors in his race against Baca. Tanaka announced his campaign plans under a blistering Southern California sun last month with around two dozen law enforcement officials and supporters at his side on a helicopter pad near Dodger Stadium. The budding politician gathered a â&#x20AC;&#x153;teamâ&#x20AC;? of around a dozen close friends, none of whom had ever been involved in any political campaign and started to map out a plan that would eventually get him elected to the Gardena City Council. â&#x20AC;&#x153;None of us had a clue how to run a campaign, we were running against the city hall insiders and no one ever expected us to come close in the campaign, let alone get the top vote,â&#x20AC;? he said. Tanaka said he purchased several copies of a book written by then Congressio-

nal Speaker Tip Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neill about â&#x20AC;&#x153;how to run for political office.â&#x20AC;? The book called â&#x20AC;&#x153;All Politics is Local: And Other Rules of the Gameâ&#x20AC;? became the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tanaka Campaign Bible.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was like reading a how to get elected to local office guide, so we followed the script of the book, and sure enough, we won that first election and sent a loud message to the old guard that Gardena needed to move forward with new blood,â&#x20AC;? he said. Since then, Tanaka has never lost an election, and has become a local hero to many in Gardena for helping save the municipality from a â&#x20AC;&#x153;certain financial meltdownâ&#x20AC;? in the late 1990â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were $5.2 million in the red and we were literally within hours of declaring bankruptcy but we dug in our heels,â&#x20AC;? Tanaka said. He recalled summoning Gardenaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s city manager, and top executives from banks in New York in one room and told those assembled â&#x20AC;&#x153;no one is leaving this room until we get a deal to fix this crisis.â&#x20AC;? Within hours, Tanaka and Gardena city officials had avoided bankruptcy and said â&#x20AC;&#x153;we got a new lease on life.â&#x20AC;? Gardena went from having â&#x20AC;&#x153;junk bond ratings to a financial score on of AA-Stable.â&#x20AC;? His political mentor is former Gardena Mayor and Councilmember Mas Fuki, whom Tanaka called a â&#x20AC;&#x153;legend in the Japanese-American community.â&#x20AC;? Fuki, who was also a longtime aide to former Los Angeles County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn called Tanaka on the phone â&#x20AC;&#x153;out of the blue one dayâ&#x20AC;? and told him â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gardena is in trouble, and we need your help.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was like getting a call from God, so to speak. When Mas calls and tells you to help, you do exactly as he says,â&#x20AC;? Tanaka said. Gardena, like most cities in the South Los Angeles/South Bay area had suffered a long period of what Tanaka called â&#x20AC;&#x153;urban decay compounded with out of control crime and gangs.â&#x20AC;? He said he is a â&#x20AC;&#x153;huge advocate and vocal supporterâ&#x20AC;? of the Gardena Police Department that has around 90 sworn officers. Tanaka, who worked at the time as a Lieutenant with the much larger Los Angeles County Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department, says that he has â&#x20AC;&#x153;never pushed to have the Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to come into Gardena as its law enforcement agency.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Gardena Police Department is amazing and does an incredible job in protecting our entire community,â&#x20AC;? he said. Tanaka also pointed to statistics from different government agencies that â&#x20AC;&#x153;prove Gardena is one of the safest cities in the entire South Bay.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;This campaign is about creating a new environment within the Los Angeles County Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department,â&#x20AC;? Continued from page 1 opportunity to consider the expansion of the proposed project to include a new, exciting, pedestrian-focused downtown that will attract more visitors and shoppers to support businesses in the area,” Rawlings said during the meeting. The proposed plan aims to enhance the accessibility of pedestrian space combined with additional commercial space for retail kiosks. To make this possible, the plan includes the reduction of four-lane traffic to just two-lane and the installation of two mid-block pedestrian signals that will eliminate jaywalking and improve pedestrian traffic safety. The proposal will also give way to angle-type parking instead of the current tandem parking that will result to more available parking spaces in downtown Artesia. “The mixture of increased pedestrian access, enhanced landscaping and additional commercial spaces provides a balanced, harmonious and aesthetically pleasing environment for the downtown and will ultimately increase business revenues,” said Rawlings. In 2007, Artesia City Traffic Engineer C. Hui Lai introduced a similar pedestrianoriented median concept plan. That plan proposed to install a 40-foot wide island median on Pioneer Blvd. between 183rd and 186th Streets and a 30-foot island median between 187th and 186th Streets. While it proposed to reduce by half the four-lane traffic, existing curbside parking on both sides of Pioneer Blvd, however, would remain unaffected. At that time, a number of concerns were expressed among them were that new kiosks will compete with existing

businesses; reduction of motorist lanes will cause a gridlock and response time for fire trucks passing the area will take much longer. Under Rawlings new proposal, the modified plan seeks to resolve those concerns by presenting solutions that include giving first opportunity to existing businesses to bid for new retail kiosks; motorists traffic passing Pioneer Blvd. will be diverted to main adjacent freeway accessible streets; and downtown traffic signals are now equipped with emergency preemption devices that will allow traffic signals in the area to turn green simultaneously for passing fire trucks on duty. With the new pedestrian-oriented median plan, it is expected that the possible leasing of retail kiosks could generate annual approximate revenue of $100,000 for the City not to mention revenues from additional sales tax. “The plan is also expected to transform the downtown into a vibrant outdoor entertainment area for shoppers, diners and music lovers and the uniqueness of these pedestrian oriented public spaces will draw in new customers and visitors to the business corridor on Pioneer Boulevard,” said Rawlings. .. Another innovative amenity proposed together with the above plan is the installation of downtown identification monument consisting of 12-ft. tall column with a 48-inch world globe on top that will continuously rotate highlighting the downtown areas international flair. The estimated cost of replacing the pending beautification project with the proposed expanded plan would be roughly $300,000 which is still within the $400,000 contingency budget programmed for the Griffith Company construction contract according to the proposal. With all its exciting promise and benefits, the downtown revitalization proposal

is still not free from issues and concerns prompting Mayor Sally Flowers to suggest, “We need a special meeting between now and next regular meeting to discuss the alternative plan further.” Mayor Pro Tem Tony Lima asked the Interim City Manager “if further study of the alternative plan will stop the scheduled implementation to proceed with the original improvement plan?” Rawlings replied, “yes, because there will be changes in the plan’s footprints.” On the other hand, Councilman John Lyon said, “we need to expedite approval while the money is ready.” Councilman Victor Manalo, whose participation in the meeting was made possible via remote telephone conference while he was in San Francisco, took special interest in having the Verizon property/building wall painted with a mural so as to compliment the ongoing beautification. Although Rawlings noted that the said

property is not part of the proposed plan, City Attorney Kevin Ennis hinted, “Since Verizon is leasing the property from the City the former may just approach us in view of obvious changes taking place and that is a good time to discuss with the company Councilman Manalo’s proposal.” The City Council finally agreed to continue discussion of the proposed Downtown Pedestrian-Oriented Concept Plan before the next regular meeting. In the meantime, the City Attorney will work with Staff to address the outstanding legal issues of the plan among them are the City’s ability to use public right-of-way for commercial kiosks; the safety of design elements to protect pedestrians in the center medians; and Fire Dept.’s requirements for minimum fire lane width for traffic lanes in connection with reducing traffic lanes to one in each direction.

Penny gets Norwalk going in emotional season opener

By Loren Kopff Norwalk’s season-opening victory over visiting Long Beach Cabrillo last Friday night wasn’t as explosive as its 5826 triumph over the Jaguars last season. In fact, the Lancers had to rally in the fourth quarter, then stave off a potential gamewinning touchdown by their opponent in the final minute. But if it’s crunch time and if it’s Norwalk football, then senior wingback Rashaad Penny is involved. Penny capped off an 11-play, 66-yard, 5:41 drive with a one-yard run with 5:17 left in the game to give the Lancers a 20-15 win at Excelsior Stadium. Penny, who injured his ankle in the third quarter, ended with 148 yards on 15 carries and scored twice. Penny was also playing the game with a heavy heart. “This is a fight for my team,” Penny said. “This is an emotional win and I couldn’t do it without my O-line blocking. But then we stepped it up on defense. I knew we were going to get a big play; I had it on my mind. This is for my Aunt Martha. She passed two weeks ago and this is one I’m going to keep for the record books. I wish her the best.” In addition to Penny’s minor injury, Norwalk head coach Jesse Ceniceros had to get through some other obstacles throughout the contest, including the muggy weather conditions and the 60 penalty yards in the first half. “There were a lot of different factors,” Ceniceros said. “The heat was a major factor. We had kids cramping up and it seems we have a couple of injuries in key spots. [Cabrillo] is a hell of a football team. I’m not going to take anything away from them.” Norwalk struck first on its opening possession of the game but while Penny rushed for 38 yards on five carries, it was senior wingback Matthew Ortega’s fiveyard run that gave the hosts a 7-0 lead. The defense was holding its own despite

Cabrillo punted twice, had a drive stall on downs and fumbled once in the first half. With just under a minute remaining in the half, Penny, in midseason form, busted loose for a 62-yard touchdown run. Then he thought he had given the Lancers a 20-0 lead after he returned the second half kickoff 95 yards. But a holding penalty nullified that and Norwalk eventually fumbled on the seventh play of the drive. Cabrillo took advantage and got on the scoreboard with 4:55 left in the third quarter on a five-yard run from Kaelon Price. On Norwalk’s next possession, Penny didn’t have a carry among the five plays the team ran but was able to punt despite his injury. The Jaguars were able to drive a short 41 yards to take the lead 62 seconds into the fourth quarter when Price threw a 15-yard score to Darren Gardenhire, who also ran in the two-point conversion. After that, Penny returned to action and seemed like new. He gained 12 yards on the first two plays of the drive, then 13 more on back to back rushes moments later before ending the drive on a three-yard run and his second touchdown. “He talked me into putting him in at the end,” Ceniceros said. “I probably

shouldn’t have let him do that but we’re just going to hang in there. We have a tough game next week too with Diamond Bar. We just have to stay healthy.” However, the game wasn’t decided until junior cornerback Ryan McDowell recovered a fumble at the Norwalk 12yard line with 41.8 seconds left in the game. The fumble came after Cabrillo had driven to the three-yard line and was facing a third and one situation. Ortega picked up 85 yards on 14 carries while McDowell and senior fullback Xavier Fuery combined for 60 yards on nine carries. Senior cornerback Nick Fernandez led Norwalk with seven tackles while senior linebacker Jose Abrina added six tackles. Norwalk, which moved from fourth to third in the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Southeast Division top 10 poll, will visit Diamond Bar tonight. “I’m really proud of our kids because I told the kids today about homemade football,” Ceniceros said. “We’re working with kids who are from Norwalk; they were born and raised here. We don’t get a lot of transfers coming in and we are making football players out of them.”

ANAHEIM-The young John Glenn football team, with 16 sophomores, 13 juniors and nine seniors on its 2013 roster took the field last Thursday night against Magnolia hoping to contain Arizona State University signee Jamal Scott. But it was the Sentinels’ Larry Cooper who stole the

spotlight at Handel Stadium. Cooper rushed for 121 yards on eight carries with a pair of touchdowns and caught two other touchdown passes totaling 61 yards as the visiting Eagles were crushed 41-20 in their season opener. Scott, who rushed for 55 yards and scored on a one-yard push five minutes into the game, left with an injury before halftime

and didn’t return. That’s when Cooper took over and turned a close game into the rout, aided by three first half Glenn fumbles. “Those young kids were the ones who made those drastic mistakes,” said John Glenn head coach Ray Niemann. “The young kids have to step up and sometimes when the kids are down, they’re down. A fumbled snap on the first play following the touchdown gave the hosts the ball again, but the Sentinels went three and out. Glenn was showing some promise when senior running back Angel Rochin picked up 21 yards on a fake punt but the Eagles eventually punted to begin the second quarter. The Eagles thought they were continuing the momentum when Magnolia muffed that punt but two fumbles in five plays in less than two minutes in between a Magnolia turnover led to Cooper’s first score, a nine-yard run, with 7:22 left in the first half that put the Sentinels in front 15-0. Glenn finally put its offense in gear and went 78 yards on 10 plays in a little over four minutes to hit the end zone. Rochin cashed in from two yards out with 3:14 left in the half. Rochin carried the Eagles in the first half with 65 yards on 10 carries including 23 yards on a pair of fake punts. But he would be sidelined with a hip injury early in the third quarter and did not see action the rest of the game. Rochin also had six tackles. “That took a dimension off because they couldn’t stop our option,” Niemann said of Rochin’s absence. Magnolia scored twice in the final 1:32 of the first half to own a 28-6 halftime advantage and put the game away 102 seconds into the second half when Cooper raced 78 yards down the right sideline. After junior Martin Sanchez recovered another muffed punt, the Eagles went to junior quarterback Erick Galindo and he added the team’s second touchdown, a six yard run midway through the third quarter. But early in the fourth quarter, Cooper caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Adeel Akbar to make it a 41-12 contest. Senior halfback Steven Morones capped the game’s scoring with a 20-yard run, plus the two-point conversion, with 17 ticks left in the game. “I think the fatigue factor after our offense began to stall a little bit…our defense got tired,” Niemann said. “Our [defensive backs] are young and they couldn’t stop the [Cooper].” Junior running back Dominic Enriquez led Glenn with 90 yards on 14 carries and had nine and a half tackles while Morones added 52 yards on five touches and five tackles and Galindo chipped in with 51 yards on 17 carries. Akbar completed 15 of 22 passes for 173 yards and the Sentinels rushed for 206 yards. Glenn will face Pioneer tonight at La Mirada’s Goodman Stadium. The Eagles, who have now lost four consecutive season openers, fell to the Titans 35-28 last season in the second game.

Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District’s Academic Performance Index increased for the sixth straight year, reaching a new high of 781, according to data released Thursday by the California Department of Education. The overall District API, which measures the academic performance and growth of schools on a variety of criteria, gained six points over last year with 16 schools demonstrating growth, and half of those making double-digit gains over the last few years. “I’m very pleased that our trend data reflects steady improvement,” said Superintendent Dr. Ruth Pérez. “We are very proud of our students.” Schools that had the highest gains since the previous year include: Johnston and Chavez elementary schools by 27 points Glenn High School and Sanchez Elementary by 20 points each Norwalk High School and Dulles Elementary by 16 points each Los Alisos Middle School by 14 points La Pluma Elementary by 11 points; and Foster Road Elementary by 10 points Fourteen of the District’s 28 schools have now surpassed the state’s target of 800, including Gardenhill Elementary at 915 and Escalona Elementary scoring 907. “Our students continue to grow by leaps and bounds and I couldn’t be more proud of them,” said NLMUSD Board President Ed Hengler. “The District is on an upward trend in almost every academic arena thanks to the hard work and drive of all our staff, faculty and parents who are devoted to their children’s education.” In addition to the continued API growth, more students within the District are proficient or advanced in EnglishLanguage arts and math, according to the Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) targets for No Child Left Behind.
