SPEAKER JOHN PEREZ IMPLICATED IN CENTRAL BASIN WATER SCHEME
“
Here's the deal, we need to be proactive, if we are not, if we do not put a plan together that we can all support, the Mutuals (Maywood Water) can be dissolved with a stroke of the pen, it can be done. Tom Calderon, July 2010 meeting with Maywood Water District Officials.
By Brian Hews and Randy Economy (Maywood, CA) Hews Media Group – Community News has obtained an audiotape that details how the Office of California State Assembly Speaker John Perez collaborated with former Assemblyman Tom Calderon and officials with the Central Basin Municipal Water District in an attempt to coerce three Maywood Mutual Water Districts (MMWD) into taking on unwanted projects that if they did not accept, the districts, as Calderon said, would be “dissolved with a stroke of a pen.” The “stroke of a pen” meaning legislation that would be championed by Speaker Perez and passed in Sacramento to “dissolve the water companies.”

The entities would then be taken over by CBMWD. Even more disturbing, the projects would have landed Calderon, and his allies, as well as the CBMWD a lucrative $25 million dollar consulting contract to “fix problems” that one MMWC General Manager insisted twice in the audio recording “we don’t have, or we were already working with the WRD to fix.” Further, HMG-CN has determined that several figures currently under probe by the FBI in
a complex political “pay to play scheme” at the CBMWD also played active roles in pushing for the legislation that targeted the tiny MMWD. HMG-CN has also been told by sources that investigators with the FBI have been given a copy of the audio tape. It was back on June 7, 2010 when Calderon is heard on the audio recording saying he was “summoned” by Speaker Perez and the Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa

Villaraigosa and Perez are cousins and are considered to be close political allies. Two parties who attended the meeting recorded the conversations. HMG-CN was provided a copy of the recording two weeks ago. HMG-CN was also told by sources that the Los Angeles Times was given a copy of the same audio recording but ‘refused’ to print the contents of the meeting. Four candidates who are aggressively pounding the pavement, knocking on doors, making telephone calls and attending debates all in hopes of earning votes from voters who live in the ABC Unified School District boundaries. On November 5, voters in the school district will be asked to elect three new Governing Board Members in a race that has only attracted four active candidates and one who dropped his bid a few weeks ago. Incumbent ABC School Board Members Olympia Chen and Lynda Johnson are facing spirited campaign challenges
from two main opponents Ethan Robinson, an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Los Angeles, and Soo Yoo, who owns and operates a for profit education academy based in Cerritos. Chen and Johnson have been given the endorsement of the ABC Federation of Teachers and have been able to rely on campaign mailings that have been funded directly from the local powerhouse teachers union. Here is more on the four candidates. Incumbent Olympia Chen Chen is a current member of the board and is seeking her fifth four year term on the governing body.

Whittier City School Board Member Irella Perez Jumps Into 32nd Senate Race By Randy Economy Whittier City School Board Member Dr. Irella Perez has decided to run as a candidate for the 32nd State Senate District during the June, 2014 California Primary Election. Perez confirmed to Hews Media Group-Community Newspapers on Wednesday afternoon that she has begun her campaign, and that she made up her mind that she would be a candidate “a few weeks ago.” “I will be a candidate for the State Senate, and I am anxious to get my message out to the community and to the voters,” Perez said in a brief phone interview. Perez will be joining a growing list of candidates for the coveted Senate position that includes former California State As-
sembly Members Tony Mendoza and Sally Havice, Downey Mayor Mario Guerra, Cerritos Councilman Joseph Cho, and La Mirada Businessman Noel Jaimes. Also considering a run for the open seat is Hacienda Heights-La Puente School Board Member Jay Chen, former Assemblyman Tom Calderon and possibly former Assemblyman Rudy Bermudez. Current Cerritos College Trustee Dr. Sandra Salazar has apparently dropped her bid for the seat, as has challenger Kevin Perez-Allen. The 32nd State Senate District includes most of Southeast Los Angeles County and portions of the San Gabriel Valley. State Senator Ronald Calderon current represents the area, and is termed out due to voter mandated campaign laws.

Knabe Calls End of Government Shutdown a ‘No Victory’ By Randy Economy Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe said that the end of the Federal Government shut down last week was not a victory for the American people and that the country is still
Community Voices: The Tea Party Experi(ence)ment By Mario Rivas For quite a while now it seems we've gotten hit with what I would phrase as the Tea Party experiment-experience. You see, I'm a student of public administration and a combat veteran of the Iraq War. I know all too well that trying to turn a ship the size of the U.S. government is not easy. Perhaps it's my military background that has thought that if a ship is broken you find a way to fix it. But what some members of Congress, the Tea Party nuts, are trying to do is not just turn a ship or fix one but crash it into the rocks. Lately, under the leadership of the Re-
facing dramatic hurdles over the next several months and years. The Federal government shutdown lasted for 16 days. A new deal reached between both houses of Congress and the White House allows for enough funding to be allocated that will keep the federal government in operation through January 15, 2014 and extends the country’s debt limit until February 7, 2014. In a statement released by Knabe from the Los Angeles County Hall of Administration on Tuesday, the Supervisor said: “Last week, President Obama signed a bipartisan bill into law that ended a federal government shutdown that spanned 16 days and raised the nation’s debt ceiling. Knabe is also a former city councilman
and mayor of Cerritos, and will be termed out of office on the Board of Supervisors at the conclusion of his current four year term that ends in 2016. “While we all breathe another sigh of relief that the government shutdown was averted, again, we know this is only shortterm, Knabe said. “There is no victory here, for either party or for any branch of government. We got through another deadline, but didn’t solve any of the big challenges facing our nation, he continued. “Our elected officials in Washington need to develop a long-term strategic budget by working together. If they need a lesson in how this is done, they can see the example of local governments across this nation who cannot play these games, but
publicans and their Tea Party lunatics, we, as a nation have hit new lows. As if the sequester wasn't bad enough. We've had to witness the shutting down of everything from national parks to the IRS and the furlough of over 400,000 government workers. Even worse, is the unfortunate news of casualties in Afghanistan and members of our military and their families not being given their benefits. Since the Tea Party Republicans took over the House of Representatives they've wasted no time in going after so called "big government" and making an embarrassing spectacle of it. Senator Ted Cruz (R-FL) epitamized this by speaking gibberish for over 20 hours over Obamacare in the senate chambers. While railing against a health care law that was upheld by the U.S Supreme Court three years ago, he would later tell a group of reporters about his ordeal. An ordeal, he said, not unlike that experienced in Bataan during WWII
where the Japanese force marched thousands of prisoners for 65 of miles over the course of five days. Not surprisingly WWII Veterans were offended. But Ted Cruz and his Tea Party counterparts didn't stop at just offending a group of veterans, they delighted over shutting the government down. They went as far as threatening not to raise the federal debt limit and undermining the economy. This all begs the question of why the GOP is still called the GOP or The Grand Old' Party? If the grandest thing they seem to do is speak of non-sense and shutting everything down while insulting everyone along the way, what's so grand about that? Is it grand that important policy decisions like immigration reform goes unanswered? But perhaps my perception of the situation is wrong. I've never steered a ship, but I would strongly guess that when steering a ship's course along the way a map is read and compass checked. When the majority of
must solve the problems impacting their communities, Knabe said. Knabe, who is a moderate Republican, also told Hews Media Group-Community Newspapers that, “This go-round had Los Angeles County a few short weeks away from not being able to provide those most in need with the basic necessities of food and shelter. These are people who are struggling to make ends meet and feed their families in an economy which has still not recovered. “It is my hope that in the next few months, we will see more courage from leaders in Washington to put partisan grandstanding aside and do the tough work of negotiation and problem-solving so that we don’t face this situation yet again in January, Knabe said. The opinions expressed by the writers do not necessarily represent the views of this newspaper. Letters can be sent to: editor@cerritosnews.net.
the American people are for Obamacare and against a government shutdown, then is when you read the map. When the heads of state (Japan & China), economists and CEO's of some of the biggest companies in the nation tell you that not raising the debt and not paying the bills will be catastrophic for not just our economy but the world's, then is when you check the compass. Of course, if you can't read a map or compass and never even seen a ship like the Tea Party Republicans you shouldn't be in office let alone a ship. Deliberately steering your ship towards the rocks when your party begins to lose all relevance and respect is not grand, that's disgusting. HEWS MEDIA GROUP-ABC SCHOOL BOARD ENDORSEMENTS: Elect Ethan Robinson and Lynda Johnson
Hews Media Group-Community Newspaper is urging the election of Assistant Los Angeles City Attorney Ethan Robinson and Incumbent Lynda Johnson to the ABC School Board in the upcoming election on Tuesday, November 5. Robinson has been an active and vibrant part of the ABC Unified School District “community for decades, as a volunteer, a former star athlete at Cerritos High School, as a parent and district committee member. Most importantly to us is that we trust Ethan Robinson to be a school board who will be “above board and “never above the law. Robinson is the brightest candidate in
this small, but compact field of candidates. He towers over the competition in this campaign, both literally, educationally, as well as figuratively. Ethan Robinson will bring a needed change to the ABC School Board, one that we have pushed for during the past few years. We also proudly and enthusiastically endorse the reelection of ABC School Board Member Lynda Johnson. Lynda Johnson has proved to be an excellent school board member who has done her homework and has stepped up as a leader of the seven member governing body. We like Johnson for being an “en-
trict to participate and attend the Gateway Academy for a fee. That’s a “no-no on our candidate scorecard. Incumbent Olympia Chen is also on the ballot. If voters want to keep the status quo, they we urge them to return Mrs. Chen to the school board. Chen has been on the ABC School Board for 20 years. We are also taking issue that candidate Daniel Fierro made the decision to drop his campaign, after the ballots were already printed. Fierro played the “political spin card with the voters. We will remember this when Fierro attempts another run for elected office in the future. Pulling out of campaign after the ballots are already printed is “not good in our books.
gaged school board member who has visited all 30 campuses in ABC. We also like that Johnson has a wide range of support from across the political and community spectrum. Voters need to reelect Lynda Johnson for ABC School Board. We have great concerns about challenger Soo Yoo and voters should as well. While we appreciate her enthusiasm on the campaign trail, we do have lingering questions about the “for profit educational tutoring academy she and her husband own and operate on Artesia Boulevard in Cerritos. Yoo has actively recruited students who currently attend the ABC School Dis-

removal of the poison pill language from their contracts. Prompted by increasing health care costs - which teachers must cover entirely on their own - they are tired of the “band aids” given out during negotiations. Employees feel like their concerns aren’t being heard and they are being treated unfairly. Some of the teachers have even begun to take more ‘extreme’ measures to shed light on their unresolved problems. During the most recent Halloween Parade in La Mirada, three teachers could be seen wearing shirts and wielding signs demanding, “School board members pay your share! Healthy teachers healthy schools!” as they marched right alongside the school board’s float. More protests are planned for other events as well, said Laura Ancira, the Equity and Human Rights chair for TANLA (Teachers Association of Norwalk La Mirada Area). “So we do plan on organizing an event, and hopefully, you never know – miracles do happen – we could settle a contract,” said Ancira. As the school board meeting commenced many of the protestor filed inside the building to make their case more directly to the board members. 1st grade teacher Kathy Jo Gutierrez, spoke during the public hearing pleading with the board to “do something for the teachers.” “I feel so strongly about what is happening to the hardworking teachers of this district and I can no longer sit quietly,” said Gutierrez. Gutierrez explained that teachers are constantly told to ‘do it for the kids’ despite being faced with more layoffs, more cutbacks, increasing demands for more work and less pay, and increasing health care costs with fewer benefits. “We have been doing it for the kids. We do it everyday all day. We give 110% because that's what the kids in this district deserve.” However, she insisted, now it’s time for the board to do something for the teachers. Special Education Teacher Tom Taylor spoke directly to Board President Ed Hengler in his comments saying that Hengler has forgotten what the right thing to do is. “I know this because of the structure that has been allowed to develop under your leadership that effects me everyday,” said Taylor. Taylor complained about the health care provided and said that teachers have not received a raise since 2007, yet administrators continue to receive raises. “Is that the right thing to do, Ed? I call that an unbalanced approach and a slap in the face of the employees.” Taylor also brought up the district’s reserve, saying that it is much larger than required and called it “hoarding tax payer dollars.”

ARTESIA
Continued from page 1 The recent development runs in contrast with the current announcement on the Artesia city website that touted that “there will be a 2-hour free parking” during the Diwali celebration. Speculations are that per an ad hoc committee recommendation, the City Council finally agreed to do away with the “free parking program” during the popular festival so as not to sow confusions and intrigue among the other organizers of similar future and incoming festivals and events in the city. The merchants and business owners in Downtown Artesia in cooperation with the City are hosting the “Diwali” or Festival of Lights/Diwali Mela on Nov. 10 from 11 in the morning until 10 in the evening. One thing certain is that the Pioneer Boulevard stretch from 183rd Street to 188th Street will be closed to vehicle traf traffic to give way to a whole day of entertainment, shopping, dining and celebrating along the popular tourist destination. A main stage will be put up for the performers and entertainers. Also, a long line of booths selling and catering to a variety of wares and foods will be featured as major part of the annual event in the city’s downtown area. The festival starts with Dhanteras on which most Indian business communities begin their financial year. The second day of the festival is called the Naraka Chaturdasi. Amavasya, the third day of Diwali, marks the worship of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. The fourth day of Diwali is known as Kartika Shudda Padyami. The fifth day is referred to as Yama Dvitiya, and on this day sisters invite their brothers to their homes.

me an amazing foundation,” Robinson told voters during two recent candidate forums. “My enthusiastic, well-reasoned, innovative and fresh ideas will guide my feedback and input that will add to the collective asset that is the ABC Unified School District Board whose standards and achievements are exemplary,” Robinson said. Robinson said he has the backing of current ABC School Board President Celia Spitzer as well as current member Maynard Law. In addition, Robinson claims support from AFSCME Local #2229, The Hubert H. Humphrey Democratic Club, Assemblyman Isadore Hall, El Monte Mayor Andre Quintero as well as two local former State Assembly Members Tony Mendoza and Sally Havice. Challenger Soo Yoo Yoo is campaigning on a platform that she says “supports diversity of student pathways, maintaining a balanced budget, and collaborating with students and teachers to optimize academic achievement.” Yoo is the founder and director of Gateway Academy located in Cerritos and recently said in an interview that she “does not think more policies will solve anything.” “I don’t think bullying is a problem to the extent where we need to implement more policies upon policy. Sometimes some of these policies are more a political agenda,” Yoo is quoted as telling voters. Yoo is backed by current Cerritos Mayor Bruce Barrows, Councilwoman Carol Chen and Councilman Joseph Cho, as well as former Cerritos Mayor Grace Hu. Yoo is a resident of Cerritos and earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of California at Irvine and a Master’s De-

She is also been a familiar face at campuses throughout the ABC Unified School District since her election. “I have visited all 30 schools in ABC, I have been in the classrooms of 19 elementary schools, five middle schools, five high schools and even the adult school water aerobics class,” Johnson recently said in an interview. “I enjoyed meeting with the principals, talking to staff and teachers, and seeing all the wonderful projects made by the students. I am so proud of the tremendous progress and achievements that our schools have accomplished,” she said. Johnson is a graduate of local ABC schools, past ABC parent and past president of the Cerritos High PTSA and is hailing her endorsements from Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, as well as current Artesia Mayor Victor Manalo. Continued from page 1 per month by CBMWD for ‘public affairs’ earning, as reported by HMG-CN, more than $750,000 in consulting fees with the besieged agency during a six year period. Aguilar begins the meeting with an explanation of why they were “summoned” by Perez and Villaraigosa and then says to the MMWD GM’s, “anything can happen if the money is there.” One of the MMWD GM’s later asked who Calderon was, with Calderon answering, “I was a State Assemblyman, my other brothers were Assemblymen too, so (laughing) we got the politics covered.” Almost three minutes into the meeting, Enrique Gasca enters the room and is introduced as Speaker Perez’ Director by Calderon. Calderon goes on to say, “if we can’t make this (the project) happen we are all in a lot of trouble, in terms of things you want from Sacramento and his (Speaker Perez) ability to retaliate or encourage things… I have never seen a Speaker who does not get what he wants.” He goes on to say, “here’s the deal, we need to be proactive, if we are not, if we do not put a plan together we can all support, the MMWD’s can be dissolved with (Calderon snapping his fingers) a ‘stroke of the pen’, it can be done.” One of the GM’s angrily says, “and this is your solution to better quality water?” Calderon answers him, “it (the water quality) doesn’t matter, the (goal of the project) does not matter.” The bill that Calderon was talking about was Assembly Bill 240, first carried by Perez after he became Speaker nearly three years ago and revived this year al-
most verbatim by Assemblyman Anthony Rendon. Perez touted the bill as his “first legislative bill after his election.” The bill was being pushed by Calderon too, and only targeted the MMWD. Rendon carried the bill through the halls of Sacramento during his first ten months in office and touted the bill as being able to “address the water quality problems in the 63rd Assembly District.” The bill, Rendon said in a press statement issued by his office this past week, now requires “mutual water companies like those that deliver water to Maywood’s residents to comply with the Brown Act and the Public Records Act—two icons of public agency law.” Rendon and Perez have been close personal friends and allies for several Enrique Gasca was at years. the time Speaker Perez’ High-rankDirector. ing officials in Sacramento tell HMG-CN that Rendon now has the “personal backing and support” of Perez to be the next Speaker of the California State Assembly. Perez is termed out of office in 2014 and is in the process of running for state wide office. Perez and Tom Calderon have also been strong allies for more than twenty years back before Calderon was elected to the State Assembly in the 1990’s and when Perez was working for a local labor union and working as a political activist in Los Angeles County. The recording goes on and details how Calderon tells the group that “the quality of the water is not an issue, but painting a

perception that the water is bad is the intent and if the water is presented as being bad, then the money will be there.” He goes on to say, “if we can do that, then that will make him (Speaker Perez) feel comfortable enough to go ahead and move forward (to disburse the $25 million). He (Perez) will want to have an independent agency receive the disbursement-Calderon indicates that CBMWD as the agency-and would be the appropriate entity to control the process.” Calderon also said that the data will

followed by “yeah.” The meeting ended with all parties agreeing to submit the “plans” to Aguilar in one month, in as “non-technical format as possible, I am not dealing with technical people,” said Aguilar. “With Rendon, Tom (Calderon) followed through on his threats,” one of the Maywood water executives who did not want to be specifically named due to possible retaliation and “safety concerns for his family” told the newspaper in a phone interview during the past month. Rendon championed the bill this past year and touted its passage as “AB 240 makes $1 million available from the state to help fund efforts to provide clean water to the residents of Maywood.” “The residents of Maywood have had to drink, cook and bathe in dirty water for too long. AB 240 gives local residents the ability to monitor the companies that deliver their water and brings $1 million into the district to make sure our residents get cleaner water,” Rendon stated. One lawmaker in Sacramento, who did not want to be named publicly, told the newspaper that the bill “flew under the radar.” “No one really paid much attention to it, since it was narrowly crafted,” the lawmaker continued. “As far as I was concerned, it was a District bill that was important to Anthony. Now, I wish I would have known more about the background, since the Calderon criminal investigation is on everyone’s mind in Sacramento,” the same elected state legislator quipped. Just hours before this article was published, Tom Calderon told the Sacramento Bee that he would not be a candidate for his brother Ron Calderon’s state senate seat. Downey PD Wants Your ‘Unused Prescription Drugs’ By Tammye McDuff The Downey Police Department and community volunteers, in cooperation with The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day will be collecting unused, unwanted or out-of-date prescription medications this Saturday, October 26th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. The collection event will take place at the West Lot of the Downey Police Department, 10911 Brookshire Ave. The event is co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Division of the Drug Enforcement Agency (D.E.A.). The D.E.A. is providing the collection boxes and will be responsible for the proper disposal of the discarded drugs. The ‘Drug Take-Back Day’ aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. Most drugs can be thrown in the household trash, but consumers should take certain precautions before toss-
ing them out, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A growing number of community-based “take-back” programs offer safe disposal alternatives, versus flushing them down the toilet. The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) has been diligent in working with the FDA to develop the first consumer guidance for proper disposal of prescription drugs. This event offers community members an opportunity to rid their homes of potentially dangerous drugs and minimizes the potential for misuse and abuse. There are a few steps in order to take advantage of this community drug take-back program. If no instructions are given on the drug label and no environmental concerns stated Then please follow these Drug Disposal Guidelines, from the Office of National Drug Control Policy: Remove the prescription drug from the original container. Put the mixture into a disposable container with a lid, such as an empty margarine tub, or into a sealable bag. Mix drugs with an undesirable substance, such as cat litter or used coffee grounds. Conceal or remove any personal information, including Rx number.

marked during a campaign appearance. Yoo is also stressing that her campaign has reached out “to every part of the ABC

SAN GABRIEL VALLEY LEAGUE GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Norwalk in control of Suburban League, upsets perennial powerhouse By Loren Kopff
LAKEWOOD-There could be a changing of the guard at the top of the Suburban League standings when the regular season ends on Nov. 6. The Norwalk Lady Lancers, who have not won a league title in girls volleyball, are that much closer to doing so after a gritty victory at Mayfair this past Tuesday afternoon. Norwalk edged the defending league champs 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 27-25 to sweep the season series from the Monsoons. To put things into perspective, Norwalk had lost at least 34 straight matches to Mayfair until coming away with a fiveset victory over Mayfair on Sept. 26. And since 1996, Mayfair had gone 192-12 in league action entering this season with 13 league crowns. In fact, in one stretch, Mayfair had won 113 straight league matches

Some coaches still may not know what we’re capable of [doing]. If we’re under the radar, that’s fine. We’ve been underdogs the entire season.” The next test will be on Tuesday when Norwalk hosts Cerritos. On Oct. 3, the Lady Dons rallied from two sets down to give Norwalk its lone league loss. Norwalk will then visit Bellflower on Thursday. “I know Cerritos is going to be a tough game because they were tough with us last time,” Guzman said. “I think we need to use this [win] as motivation to keep coming out and win. volleyball, nothing ever comes easy for Valley Christian as almost every season, many of its matches tend to go the full five sets. Such was the case this past Tuesday night as the Lady Crusaders stayed in the hunt for second place with a comeback win over visiting Maranatha. Behind 22 kills from senior middle blocker Amanda Chamberlain and 16 more from junior opposite hitter Karly Dantuma, V.C. knocked off the Minutemen 25-20, 26-28, 23-25, 25-23, 15-9 to improve to 18-5 overall and 3-2 in the league. It was the second time this season that V.C. has gone the distance with Maranatha, winning on the road on Oct. 3. In addition, V.C. and Maranatha have played in eight five-game matches since 2002, tied for the most against a league opponent for the Lady Crusaders. V.C. has also taken Village Christian to five sets eight times since 2002. Senior outside hitter Maggie Streelman, who recently returned to action after missing a good chunk of the season due to an injury, pitched in with 12 kills. V.C., the seventh ranked team in the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division II-A coaches top 10 poll, hosted fifth ranked Village Christian on Oct. 24 and will participate in the Marlborough Tournament on Saturday. The Lady Crusaders will then wrap up the regular season with a road trip to
League. Gahr’s loss to Lynwood was the first time against the Knights since 1985 when Gahr and Lynwood, coached by Carl Buggs at that time, were co-league champions. The Gladiators will visit league-leading Downey on Tuesday for its only match next week. John Glenn (6-16, 2-6) will host La Mirada on Thursday while Whitney dropped to Academy League frontrunner Sage Hill this past Wednesday. The Lady Wildcats fell to 7-8 overall and 5-4 in the league. Whitney will host second place Crean Lutheran this evening. FOOTBALL Artesia gets back into action tonight when it hosts Bellflower in a crucial Suburban League contest. WEEK SEVEN FOOTBALL
Cerritos holds on late for first Suburban League victory in three years By Loren Kopff First it was learning how to compete, then it was learning how to win. Now, the Cerritos High football team accomplished something it had not done since 2010-win a Suburban League game. The Dons built a 21-point fourth quarter lead and held on to knock off John Glenn 36-29 last Friday night at Excelsior Stadium, snapping a 16-game league losing streak. The last time Cerritos won in the circuit was Nov. 5, 2010, a 12-7 win over Bellflower. It was also the first road league win since defeating Artesia 27-20 on Oct. 16, 2009. “The league win means a lot but more importantly today, for sure, is our kids overcame their own mistakes and they didn’t give up,” said Cerritos head coach Darin Owens. “That’s a big part of turning the program around. But to Glenn’s credit, they never gave up and they battled all night long.” Cerritos scored on its first four drives of the game and with 7:57 left in the contest, had a 36-15 lead following a 43-yard touchdown run from junior quarterback Ki’Jon Washington in which he pushed his way through the middle of his offensive line and the Glenn defense. But the Eagles responded and after a 3:24 drive, junior quarterback Erick Galindo scored from a yard out. The twopoint conversion was unsuccessful but the hosts were back in the game. Following a successful onside recovery, Glenn needed four plays, plus a major penalty on Cerritos, to find the end zone again. Galindo hooked up with senior running back Angel Rochin for 14 yards and after Galindo’s run for the two-point conversion, Glenn was down by one possession with 3:23 left in the game. However, the Eagles couldn’t recover another onside kick and the Dons held the ball the remainder of the game. It was the second straight game the Eagles made a second half rally. The previous week, Glenn trailed Mayfair 28-0 at the half before falling 30-15. “That’s how we are; that’s how we’ve played this season so far,” said John Glenn interim head coach Joaquin Aguilar. “Last week was indicative of that. We find our moments and all of a sudden their effort goes up, they show up and they start gaining confidence and making plays.” Senior running back LaMarr Crowder
gave Cerritos (2-5 overall, 1-3 in league) a 14-0 lead with touchdown runs of 46 yards, on an inside reverse in the first quarter, and four yards, early in the second quarter. But Glenn responded with its longest drive of the night, going 80 yards on 19 plays, consuming 6:26 and ending with a Rochin five-yard run. It was the first time since Sept. 13 against Santa Ana Valley that the Eagles had scored in the first half. But with 8.6 seconds left in the half, the Dons scored their first passing touchdown of the season as Washington found sophomore tight end Brandon Brown for a six-yard play. Washington would also add a five-yard score early in the second half to give Cerritos a 28-7 lead. But the Eagles (0-7, 0-3) began their comeback almost two minutes following Washington’s touchdown as senior running back Jamal Burns broke loose for a 47-yard score, plus a two-point conversion run from junior running back Dominick Enriquez. “The bottom line is all night long, the defense struggled,” Owens said of Glenn’s fourth quarter rally. “That’s a tough deal when you’re in that situation.” Pacing Cerritos as he has done all season was Crowder, who racked up 243 yards on 32 carries. Crowder now has 1,197 yards, which leads the league, and has found the end zone 12 times. Crowder has nearly 100 yards more than Norwalk senior wingback Rashaad Penny. “LaMarr is an athlete,” Owens said. “He’s a hard worker, runs very hard and is physical. But we couldn’t do it without his [offensive] line. What’s really encouraging and nice is the whole line comes back [next year]. They are growing leaps and bounds. Every game they are getting better and better. So, yes, LaMarr gets the credit; he gets all of the yards, but it’s our line and it’s our backs. It’s a whole team effort.” Washington added 92 yards on 12 carries and junior running back Kory Boyd pitched in with 38 yards on 12 carries. Defensively, junior linebacker Christian Veazie had five tackles and junior defensive back Ron Reddy had four and a half tackles. Cerritos hosted La Mirada on Oct. 24 and will close out their league schedule on Friday against Mayfair at Ron Yary Stadium on the Bellflower campus. Glenn was led by Rochin (86 yards, 13 carries) and Enriquez (84 yards, 14 carries) and had 272 yards on the ground. Sophomore linebacker Andrew Castro had a game-high seven and a half tackles while sophomore linebacker Diego Banuelos added five tackles. “This is their time to shine,” Aguilar said of Rochin and Enriquez. “We basi-
11
cally told them, they’re the guys this year. They need to make the plays and I think they’re rising to the occasion.” The Eagles will face league leading Norwalk tonight in the next installment of the Mayor’s Cup, the annual tussle between the city of Norwalk schools. Glenn has lost 10 straight to the Lancers. “I let my coaches know that the team we face next week is not the team we faced this week,” Aguilar said. “They have different guys on their team who do different things and they play their double wing a little bit differently. We’re going to make the adjustments that we need to make. The nice thing about it is we saw [the double wing] today.”

Stay healthy this Halloween by checking for tampered wrappers in candy before children eat it, and do not accept homemade or opened candy from strangers. Try to ration the candy children receive, and provide them with a full meal before trick-or-treating to discourage filling up on candy. “Parents need to be reminded that children are difficult to see at night in their costumes,” said Dr. Manuel Sacapano, ER physician at Tri-City Regional Medical Center in Hawaiian Gardens. “Every year, numerous avoidable injuries occur when motorists fail to see an excited child crossing the road. Safety must be the top priority. Go in groups and maintain supervision at all times. Discuss safety with your children before
heading out." An adult should always accompany young children during trick-or-treating and Halloween festivities. Older children who may trick-or-treat alone should follow a planned route and carry a cell phone for emergencies. Remember to only visit homes with a porch light on, and remind children never to enter a home or vehicle for candy. When considering a costume, plan something colorful or reflective to prevent fading into the dark. Make sure shoes fit well and costumes are short enough to prevent a tripping hazard. Instead of decorative masks, consider non-toxic makeup or hats and other accessories that will not interfere with eyesight.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. AL-ZONA Case No. VP014567 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of FELIX BALQUIEDRA ALZONA aka FELIX B. ALZONA A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by Anastacia P. Alzona in the Superior Court of California, County of LOS ANGELES. THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that Anastacia P. Alzona be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests the decedent's will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal rep-resentative will be required to give notice to interested persons un-less they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objec-tion to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held on Nov. 12, 2013 at 8:30 AM in Dept. No. 29 located at 111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles, CA 90012. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the Califor-nia Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Re-quest for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as pro-vided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special No-tice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for petitioner: GAYLE J CARSON ESQ SBN 283920 BEZAIRE LEDWITZ & BORNCAMP APC 111 W OCEAN 4TH FL LONG BEACH CA 90802
