Artesia Nixes Preferential ACTIVE SHOOTER DRILL AT LOS CERRITOS CENTER Johnson, Yoo, Chen Win ABC Board Seats Traffic Ordinance By Randy Economy

By Rico Dizon A proposed ordinance establishing preferential parking for residents of Artesia has met opposition by the majority of the City Council. As an alternative, the City Council opted to closely monitor the current parking program, hearing comments and suggestions, and making adjustments along the way. The ad hoc committee, created to look at the parking after the complaints of residents, business owners and church leaders, have come up with the introduction of the ordinance in order to, as City Manager William Rawlings put it, “ increase the quality of life in Artesia and make it easier for residents to be able to park their vehicles on curbs adjacent to their respective residences.” The growing Downtown Artesia business row plus the shortage of parking spaces around it has ushered in a complex

Members of the Los Angele County Sheriff’s Department held an “active shooter drill” last Tuesday at the Los Cerritos Center. In a statement to members of the media, Captain Keith Swensson said that Los Cerritos Center “is one of the safest retail establishments in Southern California. To continue safe practices, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Cerritos Sheriff’s Station is conducting emergency preparedness training will mall personnel.” The exercise took place from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The event involved personnel from Cerritos, Lakewood, Norwalk and Pico Rivera Sheriff’s Stations. In addition, the Cerritos Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), mall security and store personnel will participate. Swensson said the training “simulated a tactical emergency at a mall where deputies and fire personnel can respond and take immediate action to preserve life and property.”

Voters in the ABC Unified School District have reelected incumbents Lynda Johnson and Olympia Chen as well as challenger Soo Yoo to the Board of Education in Tuesday’s election balloting. The popular Johnson cruised to victory in the small compact field of just five challengers, with Yoo grabbing second place and Chen taking the final seat. Candidate Daniel Fierro, of Cerritos, suspended his campaign several weeks ago due to personal and professional reasons and actually ended up in fourth place behind Chen. Los Angeles Assistant City Attorney Ethan Robinson trailed the field. For Robinson, this was his first attempt at public office, and the long time Cerritos resident of more than 40 years conducted a grassroots campaign and was impressive in a series of televised candidate debates held over the past several weeks. Here are the unofficial results from the

Ali Taj, a first time candidate for public office, and who few knew of in Artesia, scored a stunning win over longtime incumbent Councilman John Lyon. Taj, who is a professional financial consultant, took his grassroots campaign directly to the voters of Artesia by conducting an aggressive effort to in his words, “spend time and get to hear what is really on the minds of the residents of Artesia.” Taj told Hews Media Group-Community Newspapers that he had “walked and canvassed” the entire City of Artesia “at least twice, if not three times.” “The community wants at least one in-

The Dal Rae is one of the finest upscale dining rooms in all of Southern California and has a solid reputation for its spectacular menu that literally has not changed in decades. It is an institution for political insiders in East Los Angeles and has attracted some of the biggest names in Hollywood for decades. Deals are cut daily at the vintage round leather covered booths, and the Sand Dabs are legendary. Now, the Dal Rae, located on Washington Boulevard in Pico Rivera, is becoming famous for apparently being one of the places where undercover Agents for the Federal Bureau of Investigation were targeting the Eastside Los Angeles political dynasty family known as “The Calderon’s.” Hews Media Group-Community Newspapers, as well as other media outlets has been publishing a series of critical investigative reports on State Senator Ronald Calderon, and his two brothers, former Assemblyman Thomas Calderon

Ian Calderon for the past eight months. Last week, the Calderon’s became international political stars thanks to a series of hard hitting investigative reports from the Arab based media outlet Al Jazeera. It appears that the FBI went to no expense, and detail, to craft an elaborate “movie production studio” that was over seen by one of their own agents known as “Rocky Patel.” “Rocky Patel” played the role of a slick, aggressive, independent movie executive who engaged Ronald Calderon and Tom Calderon to help him craft legislation in Sacramento. HMG-CN spoke to at least three sources who claim that they were introduced to “Rocky Patel” while they were dining at the Dal Rae. One of the sources said that Calderon Press Secretary Mario Beltran accompanied Patel at one of the meetings at the Dal Rae and took the liberty to introduce

Regan, who teaches Government at Cal High School in Whittier was elected in Tuesday’s election that also saw the reelection of incumbents Margarita Rios, Daryl Adams, and Ana Valencia. rience in public schools,” Regan told voters throughout the campaign. “Whittier’s district does a great job of getting results from teachers, while honoring our service and dedication to the students in every classroom and on every campus. NLMUSD teachers have also increased test scores lately, but this district must work harder to improve staff morale, which directly impacts the quality of the learning environment in every classroom,” Regan told voters in campaign materials over the past several weeks. Hengler, who is the current President of the Board of Education finished with 1,428 votes for a total of 12.6%. Adams told his supports via his Facebook page that, “I would like to thank the communities of Norwalk and La Mirada (and our unincorporated area of Whittier) for re-electing me.”

committee, by Speaker John Perez. Again, it’s been crickets in the main stream media. It is likely that representatives of Assembly Speaker Perez made some phone calls discouraging further reporting of his Calderon connection. Hews Media Group reported that the Los Angeles Times was also provided with the audio tapes, but refused to do the story. At the time of the meeting, Hews Media Group reported that records show Calderon was being paid $11,000 per month by Central Basin Municipal Water District for “public affairs.” Aguilar begins the meeting with an explanation of why they were “summoned” by Perez and Villaraigosa and then says to the Maywood Mutual Water Districts general managers, “anything can happen if the money is there.” “Almost three minutes into the meeting, Enrique Gasca enters the room and is introduced as Speaker Perez’ Director by Calderon,” Hews wrote. “Calderon goes on to say, ‘if we can’t make this (the project) happen we are all in a lot of trouble, in terms of things you want from Sacramento and his (Speaker Perez) ability to retaliate or encourage things… I have never seen a Speaker who does not get what he wants.’” Calderon continues: “Here’s the deal, we need to be proactive, if we are not, if we do not put a plan together we can all support, the MMWD’s can be dissolved with (Calderon snapping his fingers) a ‘stroke of the pen’, it can be done,” reported Hews Media Group. “One of the GM’s angrily says, ‘and this is your solution to better quality water?’” “Calderon answers him, ‘it (the water quality) doesn’t matter, the (goal of the project) does not matter.’” The bill that Calderon was talking about was Assembly Bill 240, first authored by Perez after he became Speaker. The current bill was authored by Assemblyman Anthony Rendon, D-Lynwood. The bill was also being pushed by former Assemblyman Tom Calderon, and only targeted the Maywood Mutual Water District. AB 240 was signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown. According to Rendon, “AB 240 addresses the water quality problems in the 63rd Assembly district by requiring mutual water companies like those that that deliver water to Maywood’s residents to comply with the Brown Act and the Public Records Act—two icons of public agency law.” The audio recording has Calderon telling the group that “the quality of the water is not an issue, but painting a perception that the water is bad is the intent and if the water is presented as being bad, then the money will be there.” He goes on to say, “if we can do that, then that will make him (Speaker Perez) feel comfortable enough to go ahead and move forward (to disburse the $25 million). He (Perez) will want to have an independent agency receive the disbursement-Calderon indicates that CBMWD as the agency-and would be the appropriate entity to control the process.” Twenty minutes into the meeting one of the Maywood water districts general managers asks “what do you want us to do?” Calderon’s response was, “as long as it is agreeable to us (Calderon, Aguilar), I don’t think the Speaker (Perez) is going to care how it is done, as long as it is getting there,” Hews reported. Aguilar then prompts the GM’s for a “needs list” and tells them that, “it is in the best interests of you and your owners to cooperate with us and Speaker Perez.” “In what was probably indicative of the entire meeting, one GM says to Aguilar, ‘so you want me to give you a list of things that I need to replace to solve a problem I don’t have.’” Aguilar’s response was a loud laugh followed by “yeah.”

Continued from page 1 problem that put the business owners, their employees, customers as well as impacted residents nearby into an ugly situation of competing for the much desired parking spaces. Despite the new parking structures and street parking regulations, the problem somehow persisted most especially in the off street residential areas where there are no parking fees and strict enforcement of limited parking rule. This brought the ire’s of residents as their curbs fronting their homes have been occupied by other vehicles. Council Member Miguel Canales, the most vocal of the group for the facilitation of the proposed preferential parking program and who is member of the ad hoc committee, said, “We need to make tough decision to a complicated situation to protect first and foremost the residents. “With a small city and a growing commercial center, the business and residential sectors have to co-exist for us to have a progressive community.” He even added a particular block by the left side of City Hall on Clarkdale Avenue to be part of the proposed ordinance as he said “residents are complaining and emailing me because on certain days there are outflows of vehicles around the Holy Family Church.” With much reservation to the proposal as being a solution, Mayor Sally Flowers asked, “is there really a reason to come up with a preferential parking program? “Aside from the use of huge staff time in processing the annual permits, I don’t want to drive away people from going to church.” For his part, Council Member John Lyon is of the opinion that “although there is no strict enforcement of the two hour parking limit on certain residential street, a resident can always report overstaying parked vehicles to proper authorities.” Though he voluntarily abstained from voting, Mayor Pro Tem Tony Lima who owns a building in Downtown, was given the floor to voice out his suggestion that “the Traffic Engineer should be part of the ad hoc committee as the former can expertly evaluate the flow of traffic and make recommendations in these regard.” Towards the end part of the discussion, Council Member Victor Manalo suggested, “let us just move forward, monitor the current situation periodically and come up with comments, suggestions and necessary adjustments. Mayor Flowers agreed to do the same, thus the motion by Councilman Manalo to waive further reading of the proposed ordinance.

One was an e-cigarette shop owner who said, “I have tried several ways to stop smoking such as the patch and gum but to no avail. However, I found the ecigarette very effective and I have now totally quit smoking.” Another speaker from the public said that he believes “the tobacco companies are also behind the introduction and sale of ecigarettes and that the ingredients for the vaporizers have actually been approved by the FDA.” E-CIGS IN CERRITOS/SEAL BEACH? Public concerns and the need for regulations on electronic cigarettes and vaporizers are fast catching up with the City of Cerritos reportedly scheduled to approve a 45-day moratorium on the sale of e-cigarettes and similar devices while considering regulations for the same during the City Council regular meeting on Thursday, Oct. 24. The City of Seal Beach has an on-going moratorium on the sale of the products.

Wild Chase Goes Through Cerritos, Ends in Death of Suspect on Jackson Street in Paramount By Randy Economy A police chase that dramatically travelled through Cerritos Halloween night resulted in the death of the suspect after a standoff with law enforcement for several hours on a residential street several miles away in Paramount. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives were continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deputy-involved shooting, which took place on the 7400 block of Jackson Street. On Thursday, October 31, 2013, minutes before 11:00 P.M., a deputy assigned to Lakewood Sheriff’s Station conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle for a traffic violation. As the lone deputy approached the vehicle, the suspect, who was the driver, pointed a handgun at the deputy and sped away. The deputy broadcast the incident and vehicle information to other deputies via radio. A short time later, a deputy assigned to Cerritos Sheriff’s Station located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop near the corner of Artesia Boulevard and Bloomfield Avenue. According to a spokesperson of the LA County Sheriff’s, the suspect vehicle

refused to yield and a pursuit ensued, travelling through numerous cities, by street and highway, assisted by California Highway Patrol personnel. “During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle entered and exited the highway, and stopped and restarted driving several times. At one of the stops, the driver allowed three passengers to exit the vehicle, then fled again,” a sheriff’s spokesperson said in a statement. Deputies deployed spike strips, disabled the vehicle and contained it. The suspect refused to comply with deputies’ orders to exit the vehicle, thus becoming barricaded inside. Special Enforcement Bureau a n d Crisis Negotiation Team members responded and established communication with the suspect. After much discussion, the suspect eventually exited the vehicle, pointed his handgun at a deputy and a deputy involved shooting occurred. Several television news stations in Southern California aired the pursuit for more than two hours on Thursday night and into Friday morning. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The name of the suspect has not been released by law enforcement officials. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Penny turns to gold as Norwalk clinches share of Suburban League title By Loren Kopff LA MIRADA-Norwalk senior wingback Rashaad Penny, in his biggest high school game thus far, single handily propelled the Lancers to at least a share of their first Suburban League title since 1990. Penny scored all six touchdowns and the defense forced six turnovers, five of which were recovered, as the Lancers held on for an emotional 4235 over host La Mirada last Friday night at Goodman Stadium. The league’s best game of the season that many had circled on their calendars once the schedules were released didn’t disappoint as Norwalk improved to 9-0 overall, 5-0 in the circuit and can clinch the league championship outright with a win against Mayfair tonight at Excelsior Stadium. Penny, who said lots of people doubted if Norwalk could win a league crown this season, rushed for 179 yards on 13 carries and scored three times on the ground. He also caught three passes for 67 yards and two touchdowns and returned a Noah Santillan interception 80 yards for a score with 5:21 left in the opening quarter as Norwalk jumped to a 14-0 lead. “It was a hard fought game and it just came down to who wanted it more,” Penny said. “I told my team we had to line up and we had to play. We had to [force] a fumble and we made it possible. This is something we just have to keep building on.” Norwalk had leads of 21 points four times before the Matadores stormed back in the final 13 minutes of the game. It all began with Adam Carrasco scoring from three yards out with a minute remaining in the third quarter, cutting La Mirada’s deficit to 35-21. After Penny caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Jacob Carr almost five minutes into the fourth quarter, Santillan immediately came back with a 70-yard score to Tyler Luatua. Ethan Lopez recovered the ensuing onside kick and La Mirada rode the legs of

La Mirada’s defense then forced Norwalk to punt and its offense was driving for a potential tying touchdown. But on this night, Norwalk did not turn the ball over once and in fact, has

But again, we have a special team and we just have to keep battling.” La Mirada’s first three drives of the game ended with a fumble, an interception and another fumble. La Mirada for third place, was hoping to catch second place Mayfair and improve its chances of hosting a California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division III-AA first round playoff match. He also caught a 13-yard pass from senior quarterback Matthew Ortega late in the first half and added an 82-yard run late in the third quarter after the Matadores were held on downs at the Norwalk 18-yard line. In addition to converting on the turnovers, Norwalk was facing major adversity as players were leaving the game one by one due to either an injury or cramping up, including Penny, who missed nearly all of the third quarter. “It was a nightmare there for a moment,” Ceniceros said. “I had to pinch myself and say, ‘is this reality’ because anything that could have went wrong, it went wrong as far as our personnel. We had guys that got hurt. [Senior wingback] Ryan [McDowell], our quarterback Matt, Penny went down with cramps and the list goes on. It was just a testament to our kids.” Santillan completed six passes for 203 yards and also found Luatua for a touchdown strike of 44 yards late in the first half. McDowell added 82 yards on 20 carries while Carr and Ortega combined to complete four passes in six attempts for 99 yards. On defense, senior linebacker Jose Abrina had seven tackles while senior free safety Dante Foster added five tackles. “I just think we played a hard game,” Penny said. “This was my first time beating La Mirada and it was very emotional.” Norwalk had not defeated La Mirada since 2008, a 41-24 triumph at La Mirada. The Lancers remained the top ranked team in the California Interscholastic FederationSouthern Section’s Southeast Division for a ninth straight week. Only Corona Del Mar, Monrovia and Serra have been number one in their respective divisions more, and all at 11 weeks. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address and other common designation, if any, shown herein. The total amount of the unpaid balance with interest thereon of the obligation secured by the property to be sold plus reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $738,004.59. It is possible that at the time of sale the opening bid may be less than the total indebtedness due. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept cashier's checks drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-281-8219 or visit this Internet Web site www.recontrustco.com, using the file number assigned to this case TS No. 12-0054798. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
