Re: Central Basin President in Teacher Jail Dear Editor:

Roybal should be prosecuted for defrauding LAUSD. All we heard about are those poor teachers held in teacher’s jail, but what about those poor kids being abused? LAUSD doesn’t like paying teachers like Roybal for sitting on their asses instead of educating students, but they can’t risk the exposure of allowing them to teach after they molest children either. Roybal looks like the kind of pervert to force himself on some poor special ed child too! He’s seems just like his buddy Bob Apodaca who think they’re powerful important men that women just can’t resist, except Roybal’s victims are helpless children with handicaps and lear V Aguirre Dear Editor: Doesn’t anyone have the ear of our esteemed democrat attorney general? The wonder from San Francisco Bay, Kamala Harris? When she won, I knew things would swing to the left and it seems as if that has happened! We need special elections for the Water Board! F. Gonzales Dear Editor: All three are corrupt, Vasquez, Apodaca, but Roybal is the most arrogant, the most pompous, and the one who needs to go first! He has been a cancer on this organization and his illness is spreading on a daily basis. He foolishly believes that he is smarter than everyone else, including the General Manager. Why doesn’t he simply understand that he’s a disgraced, drunken former Special Ed teacher. He’s a lowlife that thinks he’s someone special. We all laugh at you and wish you’d just resign. Perhaps it flew under LCCN’s radar but at the last Board meeting our General Manager received a performance review. Although he was only hired on May 1st and has had the FBI crawling up his rear end, somehow these three jokers think he needed critiquing. Of course, we all knew that it would never be a positive performance review because they wouldn’t be putting the fear of God in the poor man if they did. So of course they ripped him a new one and told him that he’s hanging on by a thread. Apparently everything that they have done wrong is his fault. God Bless Director’s Chacon and Hawkins for being the voices of reason and defending the poor man. If they weren’t there, this guy wouldn’t

have lasted this long. So does LCCN have any idea when the District Attorney will take action on these three? Apodaca’s issues surrounding his girlfriend should be all it takes to bring that guy down. Then there’s also the sexual harassment lawsuit (I wonder if her attorney will subpoena Kara Medrano -there’s no way she would lie under oath). She was a nice young lady and as painful testifying would be, I’m sure she would take great pleasure in exposing that monster and his sick, disgusting, prevented tendencies. We’re also hearing that the FED’s are zeroing in Apodaca. God help us if he gets voted in as President next month! But my bet is on Roybal throwing one of his pathetic hissy-fits to stay President one more term. He’s that big of a narcissus so I wouldn’t be surprised. Anyways, back to our GM. Of course he isn’t pressing an ethics complaint. Do you think he’s retarded? Why do you think those three canned the committee in the first place and put Tony in charge?? We are so thankful LCCN is exposing this fraud so that the DA will pay attention. M. Tyson Re: Doorway Defender Widget Co.

Re: LA Times Withholds Story on Calderon Dear Editor: Talking about Los Angeles Times withholding information. Back in 2010 LA Times published an article about David Mango and the city of Maywood going under cover and collecting bribes from AAE , which was a consulting compant Maywood, for himself and two Maywood council members . LA Times withheld the names of two council members and mentioned in the same article that they would reveal their names soon. Over two years later still waiting for LA Times publish that article and tell the public these two crocks names and their relationship with the players mentioned above in this article about Maywood Water.
Mastermind behind all of the problems in southeast cities is one person and one person only, Pedro Carrillo. Look at City of Bell ,Cudahy, Maywood, Huntington Park, George Cole’s Old Timers Foundation, where there is corruption there was Pedro Carrillo. Dear Editor:

Dear Editor: Do I have this straight? Three previous employees happen to stab you in the back and walk away all during a time when your paper is being recognized for shedding light on government corruption and is receiving praise and positive attention by winning the LA Press Club Award? These same three happen to start a rival company and “somehow get an “official endorsement from Mayor Battery Barrows, who is the same councilman who recommended cutting funds to the city’s print budget – after you published a true story about him assaulting a resident? The union guy who happens to be trying to negotiate a new contract with the city and needs the Mayor’s favor sets you up? Makes sense, as only in a cheesy city like Cerritos does this sound legit. After all, cheese is made from milk, milk comes from cows, and cows make manure which is about what we’ve come to expect from Battery Barrows and his keystone cops over at City Hall—manure. D. Franks Dear Editor: Sounds like this new paper could be to the city of Cerritos what the LA Times is

You would think this story would have exploded on the wire? You have Tom Calderon literally acting as the “muscle for corrupt politicians just like the mafia. Government shakedowns happen all the time, but are very rarely caught on tape. In Pico Rivera, David Armenta is the master of this yet he’s never been taped yet. You would think that when they have one caught “live, the DA, FBI, AG etc would be all over it! What gives here? Makes you realize just how rigged the system really is. B. Roderiguez

Dear Editor:

A great example as to why we need to support and promote local “independent papers that publish investigative reporting not fluff pieces. An even better reason why citizens need to get involved, read their local news and VOTE! Mike S. Dear Editor: They are all very liberal democrats, what else can we expect? The LA Times still plays fast and loose with stories and facts. They stopped being creditable or truthful a long long time ago. S. Wright

Councilman and past Downey Mayor, President of the Independent Cities Association and California State Senate Candidate Mario A. Guerra, responded to recent rumors regarding the Downey Mayor Mario Guerra possibility of a future Mario Guerra Los Angeles County Supervisor bid from multiple news outlets across California: “While I am flattered to be regarded as a potential contender for a future open Los Angeles Board of Supervisor seat, it is completely unfounded. I am dedicated to running for State Senate, because I believe that our communities deserve better leadership in Sacramento. Businesses are being pushed out of California and discouraged from opening their doors here, our children are not seeing the benefit of our high tax rates in their classrooms, crime rates have been increasing and I want to change that. The citizens in the 32nd Senate District and across California deserve leadership – the type of leadership that I brought to the City of Downey. The type of leadership that created over 8,000 new jobs and brought hundreds of new businesses to Downey. The type of leadership that made Downey a Character Counts Community and taught kids throughout the city that character is just as important as excelling academically. Finally, the type of leadership that decreased crime by 25% in Downey. It is for these reasons and because the citizens deserve more from their elected leaders that I am dedicated to winning this election and representing the 32nd District and all Californians in the State Senate.” Mario has received over 175 bi-partisan endorsements from a wide range of elected officials across Southern California. Dulles K-Kids Host First Campaign & Philanthropy Conference; Elect New Officers By Tony Aiello La Mirada~A group of 4th and 5th graders at Dulles Elementary in La Mirada recently hosted and participated in the school’s 1st Annual Campaign & Philanthropy Conference. The conference was a prelude to the recently completed election of officers for the on-campus Kiwanis K-Kids Club. About 25 kids are active in the oncampus service club which is organized by the Dulles K-Kids advisor and parent, Stephanie De La Torre. The K-Kids is a branch of Kiwanis International that in coordination with local Kiwanis clubs takes on the responsibility of participating in community service projects at the elementary school level. De La Torre put together the conference which was attended by Dulles principal Robin Padget and featured two special community role model guest speakers, each invited to talk about the different aspects of the conference. The conference focused on the importance of community service and giving to others and De La Torre explained also the event is designed to give the students some of the tools they need to campaign for office, including public speaking techniques, creating a campaign platform, judging your peers and creating personal confidence. De La Torre said the conference was modeled after many she has attended and the idea is to get kids to be independent thinkers through a conference experience, “A lot of times if you’re just leading, they’re just doing what you tell them to do. I want them to be critical thinkers and make decisions on their own.” She told us that many of the kids don’t even know what a conference is and that they will have a secretary to take notes-

introducing them to the structure of having meetings and making decisions. She said having the guest speakers hopefully will help the students know the importance of working together, “I want them to see from other people how they

The second speaker was Pastor Dicky Velasquez of Olive Branch Calvary Chapel in La Mirada who has participated on mission trips to the Dominican Republic, Mexico and has assisted with disaster relief efforts in the U.S. “My hope is, through this presentation, is to inspire the kids to look outside of themselves and know there’s greater things we can do to help people that are truly in need,” he said.

“It’s more than just the local level,” he continued, “when you go outside and go to third world countries and you see how they live and then you come back to the States and you see the attitude of peoplesometimes even my own-we take things for granted here.” The Dulles K-Kids Club recently concluded a clothing drive as their first service project and Pastor Dickey is scheduled to deliver the clothes to an orphanage in Mexico for distribution. Dulles Principal Robin Padget is thrilled about the conference and agrees, “It gets kids to think other than about themselves, it’s a good way for them to see outside of their sphere of influence, a way for them to broaden their perspective, see what’s out in their community. In a small community like La Mirada it’s very easy to stay in your two mile circle and only be concerned about your own family or friends families.” She said it is important for the kids to see and hear what Pastor Velasquez had to say about helping people in other parts of the world, “It is a really good perspective for the kids to have.” She also told us about the excitement the spirit of giving and community service has generated on campus and that students want to get involved. “I have had students coming into the office regularly saying they want to be a part of K-Kids,” she said. On December 3rd the K-Kids elected a new president, Natalia Morales. Natalia was chosen out of 10 candidates in a hard fought battle. Kiwanis Club of La Mirada Secretary Amy Scheibel came to the school recently to congratulate the new officer.

With the closure of Hollywood Park, Los Alamitos Race has picked up five weeks of daytime major Thoroughbred racing. Two weeks will be held in the summer and three in the winter in 2014. In order to accommodate bigger races, Los Alamitos had to expand its racing oval from 5/8th of a mile to 1 mile. The stretch run will be longer than the stretch run at Churchill Downs, which is home to the Kentucky Derby. Opening day for our daytime meet is Thursday, July 3. They will also run the usual night races so there will be several days in which Los Alamitos will host day/night racing doubleheaders.

Cerritos Mayor Bruce Barrows applauded the success of the effort: “The community has really come through tonight in a profound show of support and generosity for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Without the performers, businesses, patrons, and various groups that turned out for the show, this night would not have been possible.” The deadly storm (known as Yolanda in the Philippines) pummeled the central Philippines on November 8, killing 5,598 people and displacing an estimated 3.8 million people. Artesia began the tournament with a 5042 win over Crean Lutheran last Tuesday, followed by a 49-46 win over Middle College on Smith’s buzzer-beating threepointer and a 48-34 victory over Schurr. VALLEY CHRISTIAN GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT Valley Christian edges Garden Grove, ends its tournament on high note By Loren Kopff

Probably the most improved girls basketball team in the area after the first month of the season is Valley Christian. Last season, former Long Beach State University standout Ally Wade took over the program and fielded a squad of firstyear varsity members. As a result, the Lady Crusaders won just once. But after a 33-30 victory over Garden Grove last Saturday afternoon in the fifth place game of the 37th annual Valley Christian Girls Varsity Tournament, the Lady Crusaders were sitting at 4-7 entering this week. “I think anytime you only win one game in a season, you’ll take any win you possibly can,” Wade said. “The Garden Grove game was a battle the whole time. We were making our mistakes and I know we’ll continue to make our mistakes. But just the fact that now, in the back of their mind, [they] can close out a

Continued from page 10 game is huge for us.” V.C. led the entire first quarter and by as many as seven points when senior Amanda Chamberlain’s third basket of the stanza made it 11-4. But the hosts would not hit another field goal for nearly eight and a half minutes, letting Garden Grove chip away at its deficit. Jackie Schlinger hit a pair of baskets in a 50 second span and the Argonauts tied the game at 15-15 by halftime. Both teams traded baskets in the third quarter until Kylie Nguyen’s basket with 2:17 left in the third quarter tied the game at 22-22. Then with 13.3 seconds remaining in the stanza, Jenavee Peres gave her team its first lead of the contest before an offensive rebound and basket from junior Alex Fenderson at the buzzer tied the game once again at 24-24. V.C. began to pull away midway through the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run but Ve’A Gauta’s free throw with 48.5 seconds left made it a 31-29 affair. Chamberlain then received a pass from senior Amber Binford about 17 seconds later and iced the game with her fifth and final field goal. “Amber has been doing great for us,” Wade said. “When I walked into the gym last year, I said, ‘you’re going to be our point guard’ and she’s improved so much. She’s struggled; she’s gone up and down right now. But I think just like everyone else, I think it was a great confidence game.” Chamberlain, who led V.C. with 11 points and eight rebounds, is one of two players who didn’t return last season but is back to give the team that senior leadership it definitely needs this season. Chamberlain was also named to the AllTournament team. The Lady Crusaders began the tournament losing to Workman 71-63 last Tuesday and to Bellflower 42-32 last Wednesday. But the team bounced back with an impressive 60-10 victory over New Millennium last Friday as Chamberlain led the way with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Fenderson posted a career-high 12 points and Binford had five assists. Of the seven losses thus far, four have been by 10 or fewer points and the team has allowed less than 40 points in seven of the 11 games. “It comes from our youth, I believe,” Wade said. “This is only their second year playing varsity with the exception of Amanda and [senior] Makenna [Mageo]. It’s just the control. We have to keep that poise. I don’t think any of it comes from a lack of work.” V.C. will end the month participating in the Garden Grove Tournament.

Also playing in the V.C. Tournament was Artesia and after losing all three pool play games, the Pioneers picked up their second win of the season, cruising past New Millennium 40-12 last Saturday afternoon. Artesia scored the first 15 points of the game and led 19-4 at the half despite shooting 24 percent from the field. Artesia then scored the first 10 points of the second half and outscored the Warriors 16-2 in the third quarter. Junior Onica Yu led the Pioneers with 10 points and was perfect from the field while senior Daisy Briseno, junior Keina Harris and freshman Denise Fuentes all

added six points. Junior Tyawna Finley grabbed 10 rebounds while Briseno added eight as the team collected 44 rebounds. The Pioneers had previously lost to Mayfield 51-23, Mayfair 54-19 and Garden Grove 48-32. Yu scored 45 points in the tournament while Harris had 23 points in the four games. The rest of the team combined to score 46 points. Artesia will wrap up the remainder of the month in the Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary Cardinal Classic.

NEWS AND NOTES FROM PRESS ROW

By Loren Kopff MONTEBELLO-Although the Artesia girls basketball team has won only two games this season, it has been in several games up until the fourth quarter. That was the case once again against Bishop Conaty this past Monday morning to begin the Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary Cardinal Classic. The Pioneers were trailing the Wildcats by a point a minute into the fourth quarter but ended up falling 3424 in pool play action. The game was close throughout the first three quarters as neither team led by more than three points until Bishop Conaty went on a 5-0 run to end the third quarter and lead 21-16. But baskets from sophomore Zharia Simmons and senior Daisy Briseno brought the Pioneers (2-9) back before the Wildcats pulled away. The Pioneers were hampered by poor shooting and dismal ball handling as they shot 25 percent from the field and turned the ball over 37 times. Briseno and junior Keina Harris each scored half a dozen points while three other players all scored four points. Junior Onica Yu grabbed 12 rebounds while Harris had 10 boards as Artesia played Campbell Hall on Dec. 26 and will face San Pedro today before ending the tournament on Saturday. Later in the morning, John Glenn

also saw a fourth quarter collapse as Pioneer outscored the Lady Eagles 20-9 over the final 8:03 en route to a 45-37 victory in pool play action. Glenn, also sporting a 2-9 record, raced out to an 18-9 lead early in the second quarter as senior Mayra Ramirez scored 10 points in the first quarter on a pair of threepointers and four free throws. Glenn would lead at the break 23-17 as senior Myra Gomez pitched in with seven points and sophomore Savanna Aguilar adding four more. But the Lady Eagles went two of 12 from the field in the third quarter as Pioneer trailed 28-27 going into the final stanza. Ramirez, who pulled down 11 rebounds and Aguilar each scored 12 points while Gomez added nine points, seven rebounds and seven blocked shots. Glenn played Bell Gardens on Dec. 26 and will face Price today following Artesia’s game. Norwalk is also participating in the Cardinal Classic and will meet El Rancho today before playing in a playoff game on Saturday and another one on Monday. In other girls basketball action, Cerritos (5-2) met Channel Islands on Dec. 26 in the first round of the Gahr Varsity Winter Classic while host Gahr (5-5) opened up the tournament with Hamilton. Whitney opened up the Don Lugo Tournament with a resounding 71-23 win over Garey this past Monday. The Lady Wildcats faced Claremont on Dec. 26. BOYS BASKETBALL Cerritos (4-5), which has won three straight games to capture the consolation championship of the Westminster Tournament, is in San Diego for the Mt. Carmel Tournament. Also in America’s Finest City is Gahr (5-5), which opened

Dave Koz and Friends Make Cerritos All Shiny and Bright By Glen Creason Dave Koz had a lot of presents under the tree at his very big and traditional Christmas show at the Performing Arts Center over the Cerritos weekend. The smooth adjective has been jettisoned and maybe for good reason since the pace was as brisk as the Winter Winds that stirred the cool flags on top of the theater and there was plenty of rocking, non-smooth moments to remember in this show. This was a concert that spared little in the Christmas bells and ornaments with an impressive lighting system, a fully decked-out stage, a multi-media screen and costumes that would have made Vegas envious. Ah yes, there was also music, lots of Christmas tunes that were translated well by the artists who wowed the full-house with

TORT CLAIM

Continued from page 1 what led up to the tort claim and said it started prior to the vote of no confidence against Croom. Prior to the vote “Chief Croom expressed general hostility towards the association and any members who exercised his or her free-speech, presumably pertaining to the upcoming vote. It was alleged that Croom said to one captain that, “he was too pro-union.” It also alleges that Croom warned VP Rasmussen that “he needed to be careful because he (Rasmussen) only had seven years with the department and he did not promote people who he (Croom) perceived as disloyal.” The claim said the general hostility

more than two dozen mostly well-known and well-played classics. The headliners besides Koz were pianist Keiko Matsui, guitaristsinger Jonathon Butler, singer Oleta Adams and a guest turn or two by young violinist Aaron Weinstein. It is impossible to resist the positive charm and enthusiasm of Koz plus his generosity to the band and other artists make for a very engaging and sweet-natured evening at the the-

ater. The foursome played together or in duets a selection of old chestnuts that still sounded pretty fresh. Stuff like “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “My Favorite Things,” “Christmas Song,” “Little Drummer Boy,” “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” “White Christmas,” “Baby It’s Cold Outside” and even “Jingle Bells” were polished up and presented with highenergy and some unexpected flourishes

that made the big crowd giddy at times. There were some non-Christmas hits played like Koz’s “You Make Me Smile,” “Black Lion” by Keiko Matsui, “”Wonderful World” by Jonathon Butler and a soaring “Get There” by Oleta Adams. Still, the highlights of this show were the terrific Chanukah tune “Eight Candles,” done beautifully by Koz in duet with the talented Weinstein and the extended, emotional reading of “O Holy Night” by Butler that got a standing ovation from every seat in the big hall. This style of music is perfectly suited to remembering the old favorites without having to brush the dust off the music and Koz is a perfect interpreter of the happiness of these cherished holidays.

continued and became an “offense of retaliation” once the vote of no confidence was taken and delivered to Croom. Chief Croom allegedly called the vote “a game changer” and said that the association “just crossed the line.” It also alleges that Croom’s wife Michelle publicly posted on the association's Facebook page, “you 49 are a disgrace to your field and asked, is all of your bullshit worth it.” The complaint cites examples of Croom’s retaliation including his refusal to fill the vacant Battalion Chief’s position ensuring that association members who voted no confidence did not obtain a promotion. The claim said that four association members completed the BC exam and that the position was never filled. All four had signed the vote of no confidence. It was alleged that Croom said, ”that unless every member of the association

including the BC candidates signs the letter retracting the vote, he will never promote anyone from the list.” Another allegation said that Croom “refuses to reactivate two paramedic firefighters” who signed the vote despite the city’s need for additional paramedic firefighters and that Croom “has initiated retaliatory disciplinary investigations against members who signed the vote for trivial conduct violations.” The complaint says that the city must immediately undertake investigative action and implement remedial measures or face litigation including, among other things, violations of the First Amendment and Breach of Contract of the Memorandum of Understanding between the association and the city. It is claiming that members are sustaining and will continue to sustain damages including but not limited to

monetary damages and lost employment opportunities, asking for $10,000 at this time. The letter warns that, “if the claim is not resolved, the claim will not be filed as a limited civil case.” When contacted about the claim, Downey Councilman Mario Guerra said, "our Fire Chief has done an amazing job, worked hard through the ranks to achieve this honored position and I have full confidence in his ability to lead our fire department. He has implemented many progressive reforms that have increased safety and medical response times in our city. Our city is blessed to have him leading our fine fire department. He is the true meaning of public servant and has done a great job as Fire Chief for the Downey Fire Department and has the confidence of our entire Council and community.”

DOWNEY RESPONDS TO FIRE ASSOCIATION TORT CLAIM On December 23, 2013, the Downey Firemen Association ( “Association”) filed a Government Tort Claim against the City of Downey alleging that the Association’s members have been subjected to retaliation. The allegations contained in the Government Tort Claim are identical to and the subject of internal grievances that are currently being addressed through the City’s grievance procedures at the request

NEWS AND NOTES

Continued from page 11 up action in the prestigious Torrey Pines Classic against La Costa Canyon on Dec. 26. John Glenn, which won one game last season, began this week at 5-4 and met La Quinta on Dec. 26 in the first round of the Whittier Tournament. Norwalk and Valley Christian are both participating in the Leon Davis Classic at Whittier Christian. Both teams faced each other on Dec. 26 with Norwalk (4-7) playing Troy today and Ontario on Saturday. Valley Christian (6-4) will face Ontario today and Troy on Saturday. Whitney (2-5) opened up action in the Nogales Tournament on Dec. 26 against La Serna. BOYS SOCCER Artesia and Cerritos are both playing in the 27th annual Marina Holiday Classic with a pair of pool play games today. Artesia (6-4-1) squares off against Warren and Aliso Niguel before playing Katella on Saturday morning. Cerritos

of the Association’s members. Therefore, it is premature for the City to respond to those allegations until that process has run its course. It is also the City’s policy to not comment on pending personnel investigations as they are confidential. Mayor Vasquez and members of the Council support Chief Croom’s leadership of the Fire Department and his many accomplishments. “It is disappointing that the Association appears to be using

the Tort Claims process to politicize its disagreement with Chief Croom’s objective and candid assessment to the Council regarding the Association’s proposal to contract out fire services to the County,” stated Mayor Fernando Vasquez. “Rather than focus on public safety and our residents and respecting the internal process that exists to address their concerns, the tort claim will result in Downey taxpayers footing the bill for expensive and unneces-

sary litigation,” he added. The tort claim comes on the heels of an Association proposed charter amendment which seeks to eliminate the voters’ right to approve the contracting out of public safety services. Preliminary studies conducted by the Los Angeles County Fire Department revealed that contracting out fire services can cost Downey taxpayers more than 50 percent over a ten-year period with less staff to provide fire services.

(0-4-2) has Garey and Los Alamitos today before meeting Ocean View on Saturday morning. If either team finishes first in its respective pool, another game will be played on Monday. Valley Christian (2-5) played a first round game against Pasadena Poly on Dec. 26 in the Ontario Christian Christmas Classic. GIRLS SOCCER A quartet of area teams had success in the Best in the West Winter Soccer Classic that took place over the previous two Saturdays. Artesia posted a pair of wins last Saturday to finish in fifth place of its pool. The Pioneers (4-2-2) knocked off Port of Los Angeles 5-3 as senior midfielder Stephanie Flores recorded a hat trick while senior midfielders Tiffany Castillo and Icseel Ortiz also tallied goals .Later in the day, Artesia breezed past Viewpoint 5-1. Artesia will play in the San Pedro Lady Pirate Cup on Thursday. After losing the first two games of the tournament and four of its first six games overall, Cerritos defeated Eastside 2-1 and St. Paul 4-1 last Saturday to finish ninth in its pool. John Glenn (3-4-1) lost

to Animo Leadership 3-1 but blanked Buena Park 2-0 last Saturday to finish in third place in its pool while Norwalk edged Whittier 2-1 and shutout Archer 1-0 last Saturday to take home fifth place in its pool.

Valley Christian (6-3-1) is coming

off a 1-1 tie against St, Margaret’s last

Friday and faced Grace Brethren on Dec. 26 in a first round game in the Ontario Christian Christmas Classic.
