he Gahr High School marching band, kept their streak going by winning the California State Band Championship for Division 5A and Divisions 4A/5A/6A on Saturday, November 23rd. Playing on the field at Huntington Beach High School, the Marching Gladiators performed “The Joy of Painting” for judges and audience. Gahr took home the prize with a score of 93.850. Other scores included Rubidoux High School, 80.850; Huntington Beach High School, 83.900; Scripps Ranch High School, 85.000; Crescenta Valley High School, 88.850; Colony High School Titan Regiment, 86.600; Palm Desert High School, 85.950; Redondo Union High School, 90.400; Mayfair High School. 91.450. The group also took home high caption awards for Visual Performance, Music Effect, Visual Effect, and Percussion. This year’s win marks the Marching Gladiators’ sixth consecutive state band championship. ABCUSD Superintendent Dr. Mary Sieu told HM-LCCN, “We are very proud of Gahr HS Marching Gladiators winning their 6th State Championship this year. Darren Loney, GHS Music Director is to be commended for his outstanding leadership in supporting the students to this level of recognition for six years. Their commitment to musical excellence is inspiring!”

The time has finally come for the Cerritos City Council to consider changing and re-routing truck traffic through Cerritos, and it should be a packed Dec. 12 meeting. The traffic has increased in the affected areas over the past year and became such a nuisance that the residents formed a coalition and began complaining to City Hall. News of the truck noise was first published in August when HMG-LCCN outlined complaints by resident Chris Cascone who lives adjacent to Bloomfield.

ABC SCHOOL BOARD SELECTS OLGA RIOS AS PRESIDENT Sending the City Clerk, no elected officials from Hawaiian Gardens attended, even though Rios grew up in the City. BY BRIAN HEWS AND TAMMYE MCDUFF The ABC Unified School District held their annual Reorganization this past Tuesday December 3, selecting Olga Rios as President. The ABC Unified School District is known throughout the State of California as a leader in educational planning and innovation and this is in large part to the exceptional leadership on the board of trustees. Rios is a local product, growing up Hawaiian Gardens, attending Hawaiian elementary, Fedde Middle School and graduating from Artesia High School. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Cal State Long Beach; a masters Degree from Harvard University and most recently a Doctorate Degree from USC’s Educational Leadership Program. Leticia Mendoza was voted in as Vice President of the Board. A lifelong

educator and mother of four, she has been involved as a parent and volunteer in the district for many years. She is a second generation educator and has been a teacher for 18 years. Out-going President Ernie Nishii was honored with Certificates of Recognition from the offices of Congresswoman Linda Sanchez, Senator Bob Archuleta and Assemblymember Cristina Garcia. Representatives from each of the

cities served by the ABC schools also presented certificates of gratitude to Nishii. Artesia City Councilman Ali Taj, Cerritos Mayor Naresh Solanki and Mayor pro tem Frank Yokoyama; Lakewood Vice Mayor Jeff Wood and Cerritos College Trustee Shin Liu all thanked Nishii for his tireless efforts and continued support of the school district, their cities and students. LA MIRADA ROTARY PROVIDES FOR FAMILIES IN NEED BY TAMMYE MCDUFF The Rotary Club of La Mirada has long supported a ‘Clothes For Kids’ project, now called the ‘Eileen Wade Clothes For Kids Program’. Long time La Mirada resident and Rotarian, Wade championed the club's annual shopping event for needy children for many years before passing away in 2014. Wade was the first female member of the Rotary Club in the city, and she helped to organize and grow the program. Each elementary school in the City is contacted and asked to suggest names to be included on the list. Families are contacted to ascertain participation. The process begins in early October and ends with the shopping event in early December. Initially ‘Clothes For Kids’ began with each child receiving $50. Over time and through special fundraisers, like the Rotarian Hog Dog stand for the July4, they have increased the spending allowance for each child. “I have been invited to participate over the last several years, and it really warms your heart to see kids get the things that they need,” said Chris Moton, Director of Student and Family Services with the La Mirada School District, “ The event has been going on for more than twenty years and we feel privileged to provide this assistance.” Each child now receives $110 in the form of a gift card for clothing and accessories. This year’s event was held Wednesday morning, December 4 bright and early at 7:30 am. The participating store was Marshalls on Imperial Highway and approximately 30 children were able to shop for shoes, jackets, pants, shirts

and undergarments. Volunteers from La Mirada Rotary; La Mirada High School Service Clubs; Sheriffs and the LA Fire Department were ready to help the kids find exactly what they needed. Katelin Machen and Kimberly Duarte both seniors at La Mirada High School and members of the Apple Academy Program want to go into teaching. Duarte stated “Being in the Apple Academy Program, really gave me some direction, and the Academy opened my eyes to the need for good teachers.” La Mirada City Manager Jeff Boynton and city staff joined in the mornings festivities saying, “Eileen was such a wonderful volunteer and she was instrumental in organizing this entire event. But it has grown beyond just the Rotary Club, as you can see Staff is here as well as other community organizations and we are happy to be here and help.” After completing the shopping spree, students were taken by bus to the La Mirada Activity Center for a holiday party with local senior citizens. They had the opportunity to visit with City staff and Santa Claus, who was delivering presents a little early this year.

SENATE LEADER LIAR: MOSCOW MITCH MCCONNELL HAS OVER 275 BILLS ON HIS DESK BY BRIAN HEWS Majority leader "Moscow" Mitch McConnell, the self-proclaimed Grim Reaper, stood in the Senate chambers yesterday and lied. But what's new? It is a pattern he has followed since shortly after Donald Trump was elected president. He said while the Democrats are conducting impeachment hearings they are not legislating and passing bills. Moscow Mitch should check his desk instead of sipping on his borscht. Right now, the Reaper has 275 bills on his desk, bipartisan bills passed by the House, ready to be passed by his chamber and sent to the president. There is a bill for background checks on guns, sitting on his desk for months. 85% of gun owners approve of the bill, yet the Reaper has not allowed it to

As Pelosi said, Democrats can walk and chew bubble gum; they can legislate, investigate, and litigate. Moscow Mitch McConnell can only prevaricate, obfuscate, and castigate.

Pacific Rim Resources of Garden Grove will be paid $28,710 to refurbish the decorations.

Cerritos offers Xmas tree recycling Residents in single-family homes can recycle their Christmas trees beginning Thursday, December 26 through Friday, January 10 by placing them at the curb for pick-up by 7 a.m. on their trash collection days. The trees will be composted or used for the Los Angeles County Sanitation District’s daily landfill cover. Trees to be recycled should not contain any lights, tinsel, nails, metal stands or decorations, and should not be placed in bags. Trees more than 4 feet tall should be cut in half. Flocked trees will be accepted. Businesses in Cerritos or residents living in apartments or condominiums can place trees next to their trash bin for collection. Continued from page 1 Several letters followed the article with residents who live along Carmenita between Artesia and Alondra and in Granada Park near Bloomfield and Alondra jumping in writing how fed up they were with the noise and vibration. The letters and article got the attention of City Council when Cascone wrote to HMG-LCCN saying, “You will be happy to hear that the City is contracting with the County of Los Angeles to complete some larger hot patches on Bloomfield. County crews will actually grind and remove approximately 2″ of the asphalt surface of the uneven areas and replace the surface with hot asphalt that will be compacted in place to very closely match the elevations of the existing street surface on all sides.” But the issue was far from over. The City retained Acoustics Group, Inc. to monitor and study truck noise on Bloomfield, and the study was quite revealing. The study logs showed extremely alarming numbers during the initial monitoring, with some hours of the day hitting over 93 decibels. Acoustics Group performed 24-hour

"The first ever ABC School Board President from Hawaiian Gardens and Mayor Maravilla and her group of cronies don't even show up? How disgraceful. Not only is she the first president, Ms. Rios is the first woman president from our City. Mayor Maravilla champions herself as a #Metoo, hanging out with Cristina Garcia, but she is really just #allaboutme. And how about that snub of Nishii, he was the most visible president we ever had, and they don't show up for him either? And to add insult salt to the wound, they send the City Clerk Lucie Columbo to the reorganization, several people here told me they had never seen that and were very insulted."

noise measurements in four different locations, logging the noise level every second then processing the measurements into hourly intervals. The study also counted the number of trucks passing the locations. The study then categorized the minimum and maximum decibel measurements and averaged the measurements for each hour. When measuring noise levels with a sound level meter, the intensity of noise in units is called decibels (dB). A logarithmic scale is used with 10 as the base, rather than a linear scale, which is called the decibel scale. The study found “high heavy truck traffic noise levels continuing into the nighttime period, 2 AM with 111 heavy trucks at 2 AM and 192 heavy trucks at 2 PM.” Angering residents even more, Acoustics stated in an email, “additionally, the heavy trucks appear to be traveling faster at 2 AM because there is less congestion. When the trucks drive over the discontinuous low point in the pavement at a higher rate of speed, the truck chassis shakes more violently and causes a higher sound level compared to the 2 PM hour.” In looking at the numbers, three zones along Bloomfield averaged 84 decibels throughout the 24-hour period,

with the other zone averaging 80. But the zone averaging the lowest decibels recorded the highest sound level at 1 PM, hitting nearly 100 decibels. The other zones hit 94 decibels at 9 AM, 91 at 9AM, 95 at 9 PM, and 97 at 1 PM. According to the City, the proposed truck route modifications within Cerritos are as follows: 1. Bloomfield Avenue between Artesia Boulevard and Alondra Boulevard will no longer be a designated truck route. 2. Shoemaker Avenue between Alondra Boulevard and 166th Street will be designated as a truck route. East bound truck traffic exiting SR 91 freeway at the Bloomfield Avenue exit will no longer be allowed to drive up or down Bloomfield Avenue unless they are delivering or picking up from a Cerritos address. If they exit the freeway at Bloomfield with the intention of driving through Cerritos to a neighboring City (such as Artesia, Santa Fe Springs etc.) they will be cited.

By Tammye McDuff On October 14, 2019 Bellflower City Staff presented two mural designs for the SR-91 freeway underpass at Bellflower Boulevard. Artist Mikala Johns-Hernandez prepared two mural designs for consideration, a version was chosen and Johns-Hernandez was hired as the muralist. Hernandez is an experienced muralist who has painted many murals at SteelCraft projects in Bellflower and Garden Grove. The painting began November 27 with a total cost of $10,000 including design and paint using a weather resistant and an-

ti-graffiti paint coating. A time-lapse video with drone footage was also shot; completion time was estimated at ten days. The old mural for SR-91 freeway underpass was created in 2007 at Bellflower Boulevard, and was painted with a stripe and two murals of a hand pointing toward Town Center, on the walls that faced commuters exiting the freeway. Because the underpass serves as an informal gateway to Downtown Bellflower, it was recommended that replacing the aging murals with new ones would complement the Downtowns recent

ESHAN BHATT HONORED FOR EAGLE SCOUT ACHIEVEMENT The Cerritos City Council recognized Cerritos resident Eshan Bhatt from local Boy Scout Troop 1005 for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Only 6 percent of the organization’s membership holds the distinction, which is the highest award in the Boy Scouts of America. Bhatt organized and planned a community health camp at Elliott Elemen-

tary School. Along with a doctor, Bhatt checked the height, weight, BMI and blood pressure of individuals, seven of whom were diagnosed with elevated blood pressure and advised to seek further care. The project took approximately 84 hours to plan and complete with the assistance of 23 volunteers.

VALLEY CHRISTIAN FOOTBALL, GIRLS VOLLEYBALL ENJOY STELLAR SEASONS By Loren Kopff @LorenKopff on Twitter The 2019 fall season was one of the best for the seven area teams in the past two decades. In girls volleyball, three teams were crowned league champions and Valley Christian High took home the CIF-Southern Section Division 5 title. On the gridiron, John Glenn High won a league title for the first time in 30 years while V.C. claimed the Olympic League crown. But overall, it was a good season for almost everyone. Artesia High’s football team went to the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2004-2006 while its volleyball team had its most victories since 2015. Cerritos High had its best girls record since 2009 and Gahr High had its best volleyball season since 1998 while the football team went back to the playoffs for the third time in the past four seasons. Glenn’s volleyball team recorded its most wins since 2014 while Whitney High’s volleyball team had its best record since 1999. Valley Christian senior quarterback Brayden Garner made the most of his first season as a varsity quarterback. Garner completed 63 percent of his passes and just missed 1,000 yards. But he was also double trouble for opponents as he led the Defenders with 1,123 yards on 129 carries and scored 19 touchdowns on the ground.

RamosZuniga led the Pioneers with 73 tackles and had a season-high 13 tackles against Westminster High in a 21-7 victory on Sept. 13. That marked the third straight game in which he had at least 10 tackles. Coach of the Year-In his first season as head coach, Bill Garner guided Valley Christian to a 7-4 record and an Olympic League championship. 2019 VALLEY CHRISTIAN THANKSGIVING CLASSIC PAYERO PACES VALLEY CHRISTIAN TO CHAMPIONSHIP OF OWN TOURNAMENT, DEFENDERS REMAIN UNBEATEN BY LOREN KOPFF @LORENKOPFF ON TWITTER When the Valley Christian High boys basketball team won the CIFSouthern Section Division IV-A championship to cap off the 2007-2008 season, that team won its first five games and finished with a 27-4 mark. Already, this season’s team has eclipsed that great start, which was punctuated with a championship of its own Thanksgiving Classic. Paced by 31 points, five rebounds and five assists from senior Malvin Payero, the Defenders broke open a close game in the second quarter and defeated La Mirada High 67-49 last Saturday night to improve to 7-0. It’s the best start by any V.C. team since the 2014-2015 unit won its first 11 games. “I always felt we had a chance to win every single game we play,” said V.C. first-year head coach Josh Zumkehr. “I thought there were more games where it’s 50-50 and it could go the

other way. But we played great from start to finish today. This is one of our tougher opponents. We’ve won games by double digits; we’ve won some close ones and then we just beat a really good La Mirada team. It’s exciting.” “That’s really impressive,” Payero said. “It’s all about work and that’s it.” The Matadores (3-2) led just once in the game, and that came after sophomore George Ochoa scored back to back baskets to make a 4-2 advantage less than two minutes into the game. V.C. would then go on a 12-2 run and never trailed the remainder of the game. Even when junior Julian Briggs began the second quarter with a threepointer to tie the game at 13-13, a basket from V.C. sophomore Micah Sybesma started a stretch of seven consecutive made baskets and just like that, the hosts had opened a 28-16 lead and continued to lead by double digits the remainder of the game. Gahr High, John Glenn High and Whitney High played their games at Glenn while Norwalk High stayed home but could go to Glenn for today’s game before ending back at Norwalk for Saturday’s finale. The tournament kicked off with Whitney falling to Inglewood High 58-42 this past Wednesday. The Lady Wildcats (1-5) never led and after junior Julianna Lee scored the second of her consecutive baskets with 2:31 left in the first quarter to tie the game at 6-6, the Sentinels went on a 14-2 run to put the game out of reach. Whitney would trail by as many as 22 points before scoring back to back baskets in the middle

of the fourth quarter, marking the first time since it had done so since the first quarter. Coach of the Year-Valley Christian has always been rich in tradition with its athletic program and head coach Jeff Ornee can add his name to the long list of championship coaches. Ornee guided the Lady Defenders to a 25-9 mark and a CIF-SS Division 4 championship.
