2013-Corporate Community Involvement La Palma Intercommunity Hospital Opens Public Indoor Fitness Pool By Brian Hews

Pool is a result of collaboration between LPIH, the city, and the Anaheim YMCA. La Palma Intercommunity Hospital had an unused rehabilitation pool, and the City of La Palma had a need. This was the starting point for a journey of partnership and creativity that would turn this once unused hospital pool into a community asset. “Here was an asset that was no longer being used, and I knew there must be some way to benefit the community,” said Virg Narbutas, Orange County Regional CEO for Prime Healthcare. La Palma’s Recreation & Community Services was looking to expand water recreation activities in the city, and it became clear that the hospital could help. “We had a pool,” Narbutas said. “The city needed to expand their water programs, we just needed a partner to help develop and run them.” Enter the Anaheim Family YMCA, who had been running swim programs in

local shared-use spaces for many years. “It was the perfect combination of partners,” Narbutas continued. “Between

sources to the table. Everyone stepped in for the good of the community.” What Narbutas had not anticipated was

The refurbished rehabilitation pool at La Palma Intercommunity Hospital that opened in March of this year. the hospital, the City, and the YMCA, each partner brought specific expertise and re-

the significant cost and time that would be necessary to bring the former rehabilita-

tion pool to county standards for community use. It was an investment well worth the effort, according to Narbutas. In February 2013, La Palma Intercommunity Hospital began offering its first community programs in the new Indoor Fitness Pool. The two available programs literally span all ages from “Mommy & Me” swim lessons to Water Fitness for active older adults. What was once a vacant space in the hospital became an exciting community resource to help people become healthier, improve quality of life, and promote water safety. This story also has a personal connection to Narbutas. “My mom used to love aqua therapy. It helped her with many health challenges, including diabetes. It’s very fulfilling to have played a role in ensuring our hospital pool was put to good use.” A Community Open House for the new Indoor Fitness Pool at La Palma Intercommunity Hospital was held March 20, 2013. Commerce Employee Set to Cash in on City Council Relationships (Commerce) A group of vocal Commerce activists are criticizing a city job application process to hire a new Public Information Officer claiming that the poJason Stinnett sition was essentially political payback for the current city employee, Jason Stinnett, who was a political consultant to three current members of the city council. Stinnett, who is the Acting Public Information Officer for Commerce, now appears to be on the verge of receiving a new role in the City that will pay him anywhere from $6,600 to $8,800 per month in salary as well as full time benefit package that includes medical insurance, dental, vision, and retirement. Stinnett has been a strong force in Commerce area politics for the past number of years and has worked in the past to get current city elected officials Lilia Leon, Tina Baca Del Rio, Ivan Alramirano, and Joe Aguilar into office. Stinnett in the past has also overseen a local political website www.savecommerce.org. The web site actively promoted the campaigns for Leon, Baca Del Rio, Alramirano and Aguilar, and others in the past, and criticized outside challengers who have sought public office in Commerce. “My concern is that this job is not open to anyone with better qualifications from outside of Commerce,” said Jamie Valencia a longtime community activist. “It appears more like rewarding your political friends who got you elected to office. We need someone who doesn’t have a bias view of the city.” In an interview with the Commerce Community News, Commerce City Administrator Jorge Rifa was asked if the PIO job was created “specifically for Stinnett.” Rifa paused and replied: “I understand the question. All I can tell you is it is my intention to basically put a recruitment process as requested by the city council, and I have done that.” “I will confirm that I will be responsible for deciding who lands the (PIO) job and that includes the final process,” Rifa

said. Rifa did not want to elaborate on Stinnett’s employment at the City of Commerce. “I have no comment.”

Cerritos Candidates Kang and Ma Tried to Manipulate Cerritos 2013 Election

Recall Campaign Launched Against Commerce Officials Baca Del Rio, Leon, Altamirano

Cerritos City Council candidates K.Y. Ma, James Kang, and current Cerritos City Councilman Joseph Cho attempted to craft a deal with rival candidate K.Y. Ma last December in an attempt James Kang to manipulate the Cerritos March 5th election, as well as the 2015 Cerritos city council elections. In the press conference, Cho said that Kang campaign advisors Larry Caballero and Alon Barlevy met with Ma, Cho, and several leaders of the Korean American community in December in hopes of having “just one Korean candidate” run for the city council. Ma produced an “Affidavit of Endorsement” that was allegedly written by Kang, to be signed by Ma that he would fully support James Kang for the council election in March 2015, in exchange for Kang dropping out of the 2013 race. The letter that was dated December 4, 2012, drafted by two Kang campaign advisors, according to Cho. The notarized affidavit was distributed at a press conference attended by the media and several Ma supporters at his campaign headquarters in Cerritos. The affidavit stated: “To James Kang: The undersigned Ki Yung Ma, under penalty of perjury states that upon the withdrawal of candidacy by James Kang for Cerritos City Council 2013, Ki Yung Ma will fully support and fully endorse James Kang for the City Council election scheduled in March 2015.” “Ki Yung Ma will not run for the Cerritos City Council in March, 2015 and James Kang is the only Candidate that Ki Yung Ma will support and endorse in the Cerritos City Council election in March, 2015.” “This endorsement is unconditional and irrevocable. The end.”

Three Commerce City council members were served with official recall papers from a group of community residents who claim that city hall has “grown to benefit its elected leaders instead of doing the work of the people.” Councilwoman Tina Baca Del Rio, Mayor Pro Tem Lela Leon, and Councilman Ivan Altamirano where served recall petitions from a group of residents who have been long time critics of the current city council majority that also includes Mayor Joe Aguilar. Jamie Valencia, who has ran for city council on four different occasions told Hews Media Group-Community Newspaper that the recall effort has been in motion for a long time. “The residents are tired that the city has not progressed. We have had enough of the political games, and now we need a city council that will represent the best interests of the community and not their personal lives,” Valencia said in an interview. Another supporter of the recall is longtime Commerce resident Mike Alvarado, who said that he has “grown tired of the lack of leadership” coming from the current city council. “There is a lot of unhappiness that I have witnessed in being active here in Commerce,” Alvarado, who previous served as a city commission for four years under the appointment of Leon who is one of the recall targets. Alvarado said that he was given “an ultimatum” to support Baca Del Rio, Altamirano and Leon during the campaign this past March in which all three were narrowly reelected over three underfunded candidates including Valencia, Art Gonzalez, and Joanna Flores. Baca Del Rio and Altamirano were served with the “intent to recall” papers after the conclusion of a heated city council meeting. Leon did not attend the city council meeting because due to a previously scheduled hip replacement surgery she underwent. Leon was served with by recall organizers at City Hall late Wednesday afternoon. Valencia said the recall process will take at least the next three months, and

Hews Media GroupCommunity News has obtained documents that show Phil An, a candidate who is running in next Tuesday’s Hawaiian Gardens City Council election, moved into the small municipality Phil An and registered to vote just days before the deadline that would have made him ineligible to participate. An, who is running against current incumbent city council members Barry Bruce, Michi Oyama Canada, and Reynaldo “Rey” Rodriguez, registered to vote in Hawaiian Gardens for the first time on August 22, 2013. HMG-CN confirmed the voting status of An on Monday by obtaining an official affidavit signed by Dean Logan, Registrar Recorder for the County of Los Angeles. Logan confirmed that An registered for the first time in Hawaiian Gardens on August 22, 2013, as a Democrat. Logan also confirmed that An has voted only twice, in the 2012 General Election and the 2009 Consolidated Election. Several weeks ago, An, 59, told the newspaper that he was “was a longtime resident of Hawaiian Gardens,” but when pressed about specifics on when he moved into the community, An became

agitated. “I live in Hawaiian Gardens, I can run, period, end of story,” An said.

Lakewood Regional Medical Center Offers Robotic Surgery Program By Brian Hews The da Vinci Si e HD robotic surgery system was installed in the hospital’s recently expanded surgical services unit earlier this year. The first procedure using the system was performed at Lakewood Regional Medical Center in August, and more cases are scheduled. “We are very excited to offer this as a treatment option at LRMC,” said Cyndee Woelfle, Associate Administrator of Lake-

wood Regional Medical Center. “With extremely precise movements and 10-times magnification, surgeons on our medical staff can operate with exceptional precision and clearer visibility. For many patients, that can mean a faster, less-painful recovery.” The robotic surgery program is being launched as a part of Lakewood Regional Medical Center’s surgical services and will be used for specified gynecologic, urologic and general surgical procedures, such as hysterectomies or Prostatectomies, for patients who might benefit most from robotic surgery. Doctor Jennifer Liu, Urologist at Lakewood Regional Medical Center, performed the first surgery at the hospital. She was trained to use the da Vinci Surgical system in residency and performed over one hundred cases. “We’re being very deliberate with ensuring that the members of our medical staff who use the system are very well trained at robotic surgery said Woelfle.” Along with tiny, highly-dexterous implements, the da Vinci Si e HD system at Lakewood Regional Medical Center provides a higher level of visibility for surgeons, who can view a magnified, highresolution three dimensional image of the surgical site from the da Vinci console. “The ability to perform surgery by looking through a laparoscope has been available for some time, and has been what enables providers to offer minimally invasive surgeries,” said Woelfle. “At Lakewood, all of our operating rooms are outfitted to accommodate minimally invasive surgery, which accounts for about 90 percent of the procedures we perform. This system offers advanced 3-D high definition visualization, improved dexterity and an immersive view of the operative field.” Lakewood Regional Medical Center is offering minimally invasive robotic surgery only for those who would best be served by the service. In some cases, use of robotic surgery has not been shown to offer a significant improvement over more conventional minimally invasive approaches in terms of patient outcomes. However, in many cases, the improved imaging and movement of the extremely precise surgical implements available with minimally invasive robotic surgery can lead to positive benefits for patients. “We built a new Interventional suite and vastly expanded our cardiac services, unit, and still, a lot of people told me that they came to see the robot,” said Woelfle. “For a lot of people, this is the future of surgery, and now it’s available right in their community.”

NOGUEZ

Continued from page 1 spiracy to slash property values and save millions in property taxes to help Salari’s clients. Los Cerritos Community Newspaper was the first media outlet in Southern California to disclose information about the “pay-to-play” scheme. Cooley said the arrests and charges are part of a continuing investigation into public corruption at the Assessor’s Office. Noguez, who announced he would take a leave of absence in June, returned to work briefly before going out on an indefinite medical leave. When members of the District Attorney’s Office of Public Integrity went to the Olive Street home of Noguez in Huntington Park to arrest him early Wednesday morning, Noguez answered the front door wearing a pair of sleeping shorts and a t-shirt. After being allowed to change clothes, the Assessor of the nation’s largest property tax collecting agency was handcuffed, and escorted to the back seat of an unmarked Sheriff’s car. Noguez was taken to a County jail facility in Downtown Los Angeles where he was fingerprinted, had his mug shot taken, processed, and then lead to a private jail cell. Within an hour of the Noguez arrest, both Mc Neil, and Salari were handcuffed and taken into custody at two other locations in Los Angeles County. McNeil at his home in the Venice area, and Salari at his multi-million dollar mansion in the San Fernando Valley. All are being held on bails of at least $1.1 to $1.3 million. They are expected to appear in Division 30 of at the Claire Shortridge Justice Building on Friday. Los Cerritos Community Newspaper will be present during the appearance. “Los Angeles County voters and taxpayers deserve honest, hardworking elected and appointed officials who will serve the best interests of the people,” Dist. Atty. Cooley said during a press conference Wednesday. “Residents must have confidence that their government is not for sale to the highest bidder or the highest briber.” Cooley reminded members of the media on Wednesday that “his real name is Juan Renaldo Rodriguez.” “Even his name John Noguez is a lie,” Cooley said. Salari, the flashy tax consultant and campaign contributor to Noguez, was arrested at a residence in Encino by D.A. investigators. The 49-year-old is being held on $1.36 million bail. All of Salari’s financial assets were frozen on Wednesday as well, Cooley said. McNeil, a principal assessor promoted by Noguez to head the Major Appraisal Division, was arrested at his home in West Los Angeles by D.A. investigators. The 54-year-old is being held on $1.16 million bail. The complaint’s Overt Acts allege that Noguez accepted $185,000 in bribes from Salari between February and September, 2010. Noguez also received a list of properties represented by Salari. Soon after receiving the checks and the list, Noguez’ chief appraiser, McNeil, appeared at hearings and reduced the assessed value on numerous properties, including the Old Spaghetti Factory, and properties in Santa Monica, Hermosa Beach, Torrance and Los Angeles. The complaint also alleges Noguez also told appraiser Scott Schenter to “take care of our buddy Ramin,” and, “We have to take care of our donors.” Schenter was charged previously in a separate complaint. Noguez is charged with 24 felony counts, including four counts of accepting

bribes; five counts of perjury, two counts of conspiracy; and 13 counts of misappropriation by a public officer. The complaint alleges the fraud and embezzlement exceeds $500,000. Salari is charged with 23 felony counts, including eight counts of bribing an executive officer; two counts of conspiracy; and 13 counts of misappropriation. In addition to allegedly bribing Noguez, Salari is charged with four counts of paying appraiser Scott Schenter $100,000 in bribes. McNeil is charged with 14 felony counts, including one count of conspiracy and 13 counts of misappropriation by a public officer. Schenter, who worked from 1988 to early 2011 as a county appraiser, was charged in a separate complaint with allegedly slashing values on multi-million dollar homes, condos and businesses in Beverly Hills, Brentwood and Pacific Palisades. He allegedly secured campaign contributions from the owners of those homes and business for Noguez. Deputy District Attorneys Susan Schwartz and Michele Gilmer are prosecuting the case. If convicted as charged, Noguez faces up to 30 years, four months in state prison; Salari faces up to 29 years, four months in state prison; and McNeil faces up to 20 years, eight months in state prison. During the press announcement about the arrests, Cooley told LCCN that additional arrests are “pending.” “This criminal case is still evolving,” he said. Many sources tell LCCN that several of Noguez past political donors, as well as campaign advisors are considered to be part of the massive probe. Court documents filed claim that Salari was listed as owning more than $3.3 million in assets, including property in Calabasas now in escrow, a new Ferrari worth $229,000, a Mercedes, BMW and Infiniti. “The chutzpah is way out there,” Cooley said. “I’ve been with this office for nearly four decades,” he added. “This particular case strikes me as the largest, most significant public corruption case in terms of county government during that time frame.” Also in the indictment, the Los Angeles County Property Appeals Board reviewed nine different properties represented by Salari. Assessor Representative Roger Walls, who has not been arrested or charged but is named in the complaint, recommended an assessed value well below the value recommended by the testifying appraiser, according to the complaint. Noguez’s lawyer, Michael Proctor told media members that the arrest “contradicts earlier promises” made by the Cooley office during the course of the investigation. “John Noguez has been given assurances by the District Attorney’s Office that he would have the opportunity to tell his side of this controversy before any final charging decision was made,” Proctor said in a statement Wednesday. “By arresting Mr. Noguez today, before honoring that commitment, the District Attorney’s Office is communicating that this was not in fact a search for truth, but a one-sided, resultdriven investigation aimed at `getting’ Mr. Noguez.” Cooley responded: “All Noguez has to do is waive his Miranda rights and I have plenty of prosecutors willing to talk to him.”

CBMWD

Continued from page 1 nancial support from two individuals with substantial criminal backgrounds, one convicted on political corruption charges, and the other a convicted felon. Vasquez, who defeated Rudy Montalvo in Division Four, declared paying political campaign manager Angel Gon-

zalez $4,000.00 before the actual June 5, 2012 election and owing him another $18,399.98. Leticia Vasquez and James Roybal both got a large amount of campaign funds from two individuals with substantial criminal backgrounds, one, Rick Mayer, is a convicted felon. Gonzalez was prosecuted and convicted by thae District Attorney for illegal campaign activities in the past. Vasquez also owes money to R&M Associates, controlled by former CBMWD Director and convicted felon Rick Mayer. R&M is part of Mayer’s other company Golden State Consultants. A phone call into Golden State confirmed that R&M is operated out of that office and is owned by Mayer. Mayer served prison time for his felony conviction for lying about his place of residency while running for city council in South Gate. Furthermore, Rick Mayer’s campaign manager was “Big Al” Robles who was indicted on federal corruption charges in 2004. He was found guilty of 30 felony counts, sentenced to 10 years in federal prison, and ordered to pay the city of South Gate $639,000 in restitution. Vasquez raised only $4,900.00 before the June 5th election, she raised $31,146 after. Vasquez still owes Gonzalez and Mayer $8,559. Documents show that some of the $31,146 came from the same special interest groups that she vigorously campaigned to root out. Tom and Ron Calderon gave $2,250, Vasqez’ own mailer criticized Tom Calderon for taking money from the CBMWD. Douglas Wance, former CBMWD General Counsel, gave $2,500. Wance was fired in November when facts emerged regarding the expenditure of nearly three million dollars in an off-the-books “Trust Fund” purportedly used for district lawsuits. James Roybal’s financial disclosure forms showed similar patterns and reliance on Gonzalez and Mayer. Before the June 5th election, Roybal made payments to Angel Gonzalez and Mayer’s R&M Associates totaling $10,400.00 and still carries an IOU of $28,878.39 to Mayer. Some say Mayer is going after “outreach contracts” similar to those he is getting from the Water Replenishment District of Southern California located in Lakewood. Since taking office on January 7th, Roybal and Vasquez joined ranks with long-time Director Bob Apodaca and fired recently hired Chief Operating Officer Chuck Fuentes, along with Asst. to the General Manager Ron Beilke. Upon his termination, Beilke raised the suspicion of a cover-up by the firings. According to Beilke, “little doubt exists about the direction of the new board majority given who financed their campaigns. A quick look at their 460 disclosure forms speaks volumes about the character of these two supposedly highly educated people.” Other significant actions taken include the three meeting to amend the CBMWD Administrative Code to permit Roybal to take over the presidency. The meeting could constitute a possible Brown Act Violation. Director Art Chacon was president barely a week before the three amended the code. Chacon was removed and replaced by Roybal. The president is a powerful position, he/she forms committees where all agenda items and contracts are vetted and approved for board meetings. The three also immediately removed CBMWD Director and Cerritos resident Phil Hawkins from his long held seat

on the board of the Metropolitan Water District. Hawkins served as chair of the important Real Estate and Asset Management Special Committee. “The new majority’s rush to deliver on apparent promises to their financial benefactors, they have disregarded rules and regulations, resulting in flagrant abuses of Brown Act requirements,” said Bielke. “This is also reflective in their rush to terminate all those, like myself, who were on to their plans and would not agree to bury questionable findings uncovered since the previous General Manager & Attorney left the agency.”

RESOLUTION

Continued from page 1 ism” and for “the highest commendations of the people of California.” Assemblyman Mike Gatto, Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, authored Members Resolution No. 1684 that was approved on June 23rd in Sacramento. Gatto, who represents the greater Glendale-Burbank area presented Hews and Economy with the honor this past Monday live in studio on the popular “David Cruz Show” on KTLK-AM 1150. Gatto praised Hews and Economy and the five-person community newspaper Los Cerritos Community News who “had fewer resources than other journalists and was forced to be a tenacious investigator and expert in the States Public Records Act.” “As firm believers in upholding the public interest, Hews and Economy worked collaboratively to go above and beyond the call of duty, exposing the people of Los Angeles County and the State of California to a multi-million dollar scandal and one of the largest corruption cases in Los Angeles County history,” Gatto said. “During a time when many Americans were feeling a financial pinch, Hews and Economy revealed that certain officials were secretly cheating and using the legal system to their advantage by illegally lowering property values to enrich themselves,” Gatto stated in his Resolution. The men worked together for countless days in hopes of discovering clues to the story.” “The duo’s investigative work revealed a previously unprecedented level of corruption leading to the arrest at least one official now facing 60 felony counts, while reminding other public officials that they are not above the law, and their detailed work and dedication to uphold the law demonstrated the power of investigative journalism and restored faith in disenfranchised members of the public by holding public officials accountable and ensuring an informed populace,” the resolution stated. The Resolution also proclaims: “Randy Economy and Brian Hews provided the much-needed voice for the American people and reminded us all that we are responsible for ensuring that our rights are not misrepresented, misconstrued, or taken advantage of.” Hews thanked Gatto for the special honor in a statement on Tuesday. “We thank Assemblyman Gatto and the California State Assembly for this recognition. The People of California deserve to have an open and honest democracy at all levels, and a free media remains the cornerstone of our society,” Hews said.

GREUEL

Continued from page 1 days, Greuel sent a letter to LCCN threatening to sue the newspaper. Included in that letter Greuel stated, “your request was voluminous and encompasses tens of thousands of pages.” Ninety days later, LCCN received documents responsive to the request. The total consisted of just 130 pages and strangely there were no emails between Greuel and D’Arcy, who have met several times in the past two years. “We were told there were tens of thousands of pages, and that was the reason for the delay. Then we only received 130. You have to question why Greuel took so long to gather 130 pages,” stated Brian Hews, President of Hews Media Group, and Publisher of Los Cerritos Community Newspaper. After looking at the emails Hews and his team began to realize why Greuel delayed the release. “The emails confirm that Greuel is, running her mayoral campaign out of the Auditor/Contoller’s Office of Los Angeles using taxpayer resources, a clear violation of California state law,” he said. “The emails document in great detail

how Wendy Greuel is using her Auditor/ Controller Office of the City of Los Angeles to leverage campaign support, coordinate political events, and garner major endorsements from some of the biggest political forces in Southern California,” said Hews. “It is no wonder she attempted to delay the request as long as possible.” In addition to communicating with her campaign managers, she often included another Shallman operative, Dave Jocobsen. Greuel also copied or forwarded the emails throughout the city office, and to all of her key employees such as Chief Deputy Controller Claire Bartels, Deputy Controller of Government Relations Daniel Tarica, Press Contact Shannon Murphy, Adminstrative Controller Elaine De Leon, and Executive Assistant Yvette Rojas. Courting Influential Players One of the most influential political players in Los Angeles is attorney David Fleming. Fleming said in an email to Greuel April 19, 2011 that he would not be endorsing her for mayor by telling her “Wendy, after a good bit of soul searching I have decided to join Dick Riordan in endorsing Austin Beutner for mayor. I wanted you to know this before it is announced tomorrow.” Fleming then tells Greuel in the same email that, “I will send you money and tell people who ask me about you how much I think you’re great leader. But having worked so much with Austin over the past year is the main reason I felt I must support him at this time. Best wishes, Dave.” After Beutner dropped out of the campaign, Fleming, who is of Counsel at the high-powered Los Angeles law firm of Latham and Watkins, switched his allegiance to Greuel and is now one of her most ardent backers. Several emails between Shallman and Greuel also discussed how to garner the

support and endorsement of California State Assemblyman Isidore Hall who represents a wide swath of South Los Angeles. Hall is considered to be one of the key leaders in Sacramento and influential in the African American community. On August 10, 2010, Greuel tells Shallman in emails that Hall had cancelled “another meeting” with her. “FYI· this is the 3rd time” (Hall cancelled). Administrative Controller De Leon intercedes in the email discussion between Greuel and Shallman by stating, “received an email that his flight from Sacramento is delayed and they don’t know what time he’ll make it into town.” Greuel also used her city email and staff members to coordinate campaign support meetings with John Mack, President of the LA Urban League as well as with Julie Butcher, president SEIU 721, who is considered to be one of the most influential and powerful leaders inside the Los Angeles union movement as well as with other campaign donors. Greuel also courted support from Gisselle Acevedo (Franco), CEO of Para Los Ninos in Los Angeles. Ms. Acevedo said in the email, “I am so honored to support you, trust me I will give you lots more money, use my name anywhere and everywhere.” In an email between Kapolczynski, Shallmann, and Jacobsen, Greuel is esctatic that she got the endorsement of Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, and asked if “we should announce the Cindy Miscokowski, Head of Los Angeles Ports, endorsement.” Office-Wide Coordinated Effort In May, 2012, Kapolczynski and Greuel communicated back and forth about an article that was being written in the Los Angeles Times regarding the progress of her campaign for mayor. “Terrific,” Kapolczynski tells Greuel. “It is a gift at this point in the race to have a piece like this describing you as having momentum and playing

the hot hand. Obviously good work on your part threading the needle at the forum. It also gives us some clues on things we can work on the “vision thing” and what he perceives as the other candidates’ strengths.” On Dec. 6, 2012 Gruel forwarded an email from Pyllis Pires, a prominent teacher at Stanford University, that contained a resume of an Obama campaign worker to Kapolczynski for vetting. Greuel also sent a note to Shallman, Jacobson, Murphy, and her husband Dean Schramm on January 13, 2013 about an invitation to participate in an event sponsored by California Common Cause. Greuel told her , “I sent you an earlier email about (the) Common Cause event at city hall tomorrow…and this being the anniversary of Citizens United… anything we should be prepared for (or should I) · stay quiet, (or), go on the offensive?” Another email sent to Greuel from “Jules” highlighted an LA Weekly article on the proposed high-rise building on Hollywood and Gower. “Without getting into specifics, (Eric) Garcetti was the one that approved it.” Greuel forwarded the email to her team saying, “we need to be prepared for the issues at the Hollywood (Mayor’s) forum on the 19th of Sept., who is taking the lead to get ready for this one?” Ethics Violation? In one of the most egregious communications, which can be questioned as a possible ethics violation, Gruel emails the city of Los Angeles Preliminary Financial Report for 2011-2012 to Kapolczynski, Shallmann, and Jacobsen. The email was sent out at 7:41am, two and a half hours prior to the scheduled presentation to Mayor Villaraigosa and the City Council and before giving the document to the City Clerk. LCCN published the 130 pages of emails online at Loscerritosnews.net. Attempts by LCCN to contact Ms. Greuel were repeatedly turned away.

CALTRANS

Continued from page 1 710 Freeway for more than a generation now. A tightly bonded group of residents who call themselves the “United Caltrans Tenants,” took the group on a walking tour of their hillside neighborhood to see firsthand how they have been neglected and forced to live in “substandard living conditions” by their “landlord,” Caltrans. The group visited around a half dozen homes in the pathway of the freeway showing a wide range of problems that residents claim were “directly caused by Caltrans workers.” Broken pipes create backyard “Jacuzzi”Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez [left]and State Senator Roger Hernandez [second from left] inspect the back yard of a home owned by Caltrans where a broken pipe has created what area neighbors refer to as the “Jacuzzi.” Randy Economy Photo. Some of the homes had several gaping holes in their walls, cracked or totally broken windows, uprooted sidewalks, cracked foundations, garage doors that could not be opened, and broken water pipes. One house even had a hole in their living room where you could see dirt from the ground below. Resident Carlene Ward held her newborn child of less than eight weeks in a blanket and told the group, “I am a breast cancer survivor and I have lived here for 17 years, and my house is in shambles. My plumbing never works properly. I would be more than happy to make the improvements myself, but we are not allowed to do any repairs or alterations without having Caltrans do them for us.”

And now the residents face the ultimate insult by Caltrans; they were officially notified recently that their rent would increase an unheard of 10% every six months. For Ward and other residents who live in the impacted El Sereno community, the rent increases are “the final straw” in their battle with state officials. “Caltrans stole our homes, and now they are going to rob us blind on top of it,” said Don Jones, a community activist and area resident who has been an outspoken opponent of Caltrans for just about half of his adult life. Jones directly blasted California Governor Jerry Brown during the tour by calling him “a crack addict who is out of control.” “When does humanity come into play Governor Brown,” Jones said while wearing cowboy hat and with a “United Caltrans Tenants” button on his lapel. Jones said his wife passed away recently and that he had to spend her final days “fighting with Caltrans.” “Jerry Brown lied to us when he said he cared about our community here, shame on him and his administration for continuing to put us through this living hell,” Jones said. The tour also stopped in front of a fenced off group of three to five small bungalow style units that residents claim have been empty for at least twenty years. The off yellow units are covered with gang graffiti and are used as “shooting galleries” for drug users. The windows are nailed shut with plywood, the doors are sealed off, and the roofs are falling

Continued from page 1 solved with a stroke of a pen.” The “stroke of a pen” meaning legislation that would be championed by Speaker Perez and passed in Sacramento to “dissolve the water companies.” The entities would then be taken over by CBMWD. Even more disturbing, the projects would have landed Calderon, and his allies, as well as the CBMWD a lucrative $25 million dollar consulting contract to “fix problems” that one MMWC General Manager insisted twice in the audio recording “we don’t have, or we were already working with the WRD to fix.” Further, HMG-CN has determined that several figures currently under probe by the FBI in a complex political “pay to play scheme” at the CBMWD also played active roles in pushing for the legislation that targeted the tiny MMWD. HMG-CN has also been told by sources that investigators with the FBI have been given a copy of the audio tape. It was back on June 7, 2010 when Calderon is heard on the audio recording saying he was “summoned” by Speaker Perez and the Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to call the meeting that included Enrique Gasca, one of Perez’s top staff lieutenants, CBMWD General Manager Art Agiular, Sergio Palos, General Manager of MMWD #1, Gustavo Villa, GM of MMWD #2, and Bob Ruhlf, who is the GM in District #3. Villaraigosa and Perez are cousins and are considered to be close political allies. Two parties who attended the meeting recorded the conversations. HMG-CN was provided a copy of the recording two weeks ago. HMG-CN was also told by sources that the Los Angeles Times was

Perez and Tom Calderon have also been strong allies for more than twenty years back before Calderon was elected to the State Assembly in the 1990’s and when Perez was working for a local labor union and working as a political activist in Los Angeles County. The recording goes on and details how Calderon tells the group that “the quality of the water is not an issue, but painting a perception that the water is bad is the intent and if the water is presented as being bad, then the money will be there.” He goes on to say, “if we can do that, $ 95 then that will make him (Speaker Perez) +tax feel comfortable enough to go ahead and Includes: Spark Plugs•Check and Set Timing move forward (to disburse the $25 miland Idle Speed•Extra for Platinum lion). the agency-and would be the appropriate entity to control the process.” Calderon also said that the data will have to be “proved-up by CBMWD and our (Calderon’s) engineers to justify getting money.” Twenty minutes into the meeting one of the MMWD GM’s asks “what do you want us to do?” Calderon’s response was, “as long as it is agreeable to us (Calderon, Aguilar), I don’t think the Speaker (Perez) is going to care how it is done, as long as it is getting there.” Aguilar then prompts the GM’s for a “needs list” and tells them that, “it is in the best interests of you and your owners to cooperate with us and Speaker Perez.” In what was probably indicative of the entire meeting, one GM says to Aguilar, “so you want me to give you a list of things that I need to replace to solve a problem I don’t have.” Aguilar’s response was a loud laugh followed by “yeah.” The meeting ended with all parties agreeing to submit the “plans” to Aguilar in one month, in as “non-technical format as possible, I am not dealing with technical people,” said Aguilar. “With Rendon, Tom (Calderon) followed through on his threats,” one of the Maywood water executives who did not want to be specifically named due to possible retaliation and “safety concerns for his family” told the newspaper in a phone interview during the past month. Rendon championed the bill this past year and touted its passage as “AB 240 makes $1 million available from the state to help fund efforts to provide clean water to the residents of Maywood.” “The residents of Maywood have had to drink, cook and bathe in dirty water for too long. AB 240 gives local residents the ability to monitor the companies that deliver their water and brings $1 million into the district to make sure our residents get cleaner water,” Rendon stated. One lawmaker in Sacramento, who did not want to be named publicly, told the newspaper that the bill “flew under the radar.” “No one really paid much attention to it, since it was narrowly crafted,” the lawmaker continued. “As far as I was concerned, it was a District bill that was important to Anthony. Now, I wish I would have known more about the background, since the Calderon criminal investigation is on everyone’s mind in Sacramento,” the same elected state legislator quipped. Just hours before this article was published, Tom Calderon told the Sacramento Bee that he would not be a candidate for his brother Ron Calderon’s state senate seat.

GAHR GIRLS VARSITY WINTER CLASSIC

Hirata, Mura pace Cerritos to third place finish in final preseason tournament By Loren Kopff It was a win that Cerritos girls basketball head coach Arial Adams will gladly take but that doesn’t necessarily mean she was completely satisfied. On most days, when you win by 18 points, as the Lady Dons did this past Monday night in a 6547 victory over Hamilton, you’re happy. But Cerritos was up by 26 points near the end of the first half and again early in the third quarter and failed to keep the pedal to the metal. The California Interscholastic Federation-Los Angeles City Section Yankees refused to let Cerritos completely blow them out of the Gahr High gymnasium in the third place game of the Gahr Girls Varsity Winter Classic. Hamilton got to within 16 points late in the third quarter and hovered around the 20-point deficit throughout most of the second half. “That is something we struggle with as a team,” Adams said. “That’s characteristic of us. We don’t know how to win by 30 or 40 points. It’s a mindset that we don’t necessarily have. So it’s that, coupled with the fact that we had so many players who haven’t played the entire tournament.” Cerritos (8-3) dominated the first quarter, leading 24-6 and shooting 50 percent from the field as eight of the 13 players on the team scored. It was more of the same in the second quarter as Cerritos led 37-11 with 31. 6 seconds remaining in the half following a pair of free throws from senior Lauren Rhea. The story of the first half was the performance put in from senior Tori Mura. She had eight points and seven rebounds in the half and finished with a career-high 14 points. She only missed two shots from the field and scored in double figures for just the second time this season. “Tori is very capable of doing that every single night,” Adams said. “But she also knows her role as a player. I’m not surprised by the rebounds at all. She’s a physical player and if her conditioning was up to par, we would keep her in a lot longer. For her to score 14 points is a confidence thing.” In contrast, the team’s leading scorer, junior Alyssa Movchan, was limited to only five points and was one of eight from the field. Movchan, who is averaging 13.4 points this season, was held to five

or fewer points for the second time in the tournament. Movchan was the team’s lone all-tournament representative. “I think Alyssa was running around doing everything else,” Adams said. “I think in a perfect world, she would rather be a two [guard]. But in our world, she has to be the point guard and as a point guard, you have to protect the ball, move the ball up and play defense. When other people around her are successful, then she’s able to score 20 or 25 points.” Junior Taylor Hirata also scored a season-high 14 points and had three steals. Senior starter Stacey Suzuki and freshman Cailey Vitug, who came off the bench, each added seven points as 11 players scored. Cerritos also grabbed 38 rebounds and had 15 steals. The Lady Dons began the tournament with a 46-24 win over Channel Islands last Thursday afternoon, followed by a 56-41 win over Long Beach Wilson last Friday night before falling to eventual champion J.W. North 61-36 last Saturday night. Of the three losses thus far, two have been blowouts with the other one a onepoint loss to Gahr on a buzzer-beater. Cerritos will host North Torrance today in a rematch of last season’s first round playoff tilt. “When I look back at the record, I’m definitely pleased with the record,” Adams said. “I think a lot of people wouldn’t have expected that from Cerritos. I know that we have so much more. I know that our bench could be stronger and I’m a little nervous because I know that if we come out and play like [the second half] in league, we’re not going to be league champions.” Earlier in the day, Gahr welcomed the return of senior volleyball standout Oluoma Okaro and posted a convincing 66-23 win over La Mirada. Okaro, who had been sidelined with an ankle injury for the past four games, tied a career-high of 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds coming off the bench. “She’s a six-footer and without her we don’t have very much rebounding,” said Gahr head coach David Garcia. “She was out for two weeks and I [also] lost my point guard, [senior] Ra’vyn [Bowser] for a week and a half. So, in two tournaments, I haven’t had a full squad. She’s still learning the game and today was actually the first day we had everybody together.” Gahr’s victory was never in doubt as the Gladiators outscored the Matadores 13-2 in the first quarter and built a 30-10 lead by halftime. All but six of those points were scored by Bowser, who finished the contest with 24 points and eight steals. She combined for 94 points in the four-game tournament.

Also having fine performances were freshman Miranda Ta’amu (12 points, seven rebounds) and senior Chidera Agu (10 points, seven rebounds). Ta’amu, whose older sister Reyna is a senior at Whitney, is one of two freshmen in the starting lineup and hasn’t disappointed Garcia. She has scored 49 points in the last five games and has reached double figures in three of those games. “As days go by, she’s starting to learn more and more what I expect,” Garcia said. “Right now, she’s only maybe a 50 percent basketball player and 50 percent volleyball. But hopefully within the next month, she’ll be more of a basketball player. She hasn’t figured it out how physical the game is yet and how fast it is. But it will come.” Gahr began the tournament with a 6260 loss to Hamilton last Thursday night but rebounded for a 64-41 victory against St. Pius-St. Matthias Academy last Friday afternoon. The Gladiators then fell to St. Mary’s 51-36 last Saturday afternoon. The Gladiators (7-7) will visit Lakewood tonight and then will be off until Jan. 15 when they host Warren in the San Gabriel Valley League opener. But for the first time since the opening game of the Glenn/Norwalk Tournament, Gahr finally has its full squad. “I’m not making any excuses but those are two vital parts of the puzzle,” Garcia said of Bowser and Okaro. “Obviously when you don’t have a point guard, it’s hard to win games. We haven’t really peaked yet. I think it’s going to take at least another month. But as soon as all seven start playing together, I think we’ll be fine.

John Glenn ends losing skid, pulls away from Artesia in third quarter By Loren Kopff MONTEBELLO-On Dec. 14, John Glenn girls basketball head coach Linda Parra decided not to play Suburban League rival Norwalk in its final game of the Glenn/Norwalk Tournament. Last Saturday morning, Parra and Artesia head coach Shontya Pouncey didn’t want to face each other in the not so popular Silver Bracket last place game of the Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary Cardinal Classic. But both coaches were overruled by their respective players and after leading by five points at the half, Glenn went on a 12-2 run to begin the third quarter and ended up with a much needed 51-30 victory. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak as the Lady Eagles head into Suburban League action with a 3-11 mark. “They needed it; they needed that emotional win because they have worked hard,” Parra said. “We’ve had two overtime losses. We’ve lost a couple of games by a few. They needed the win for themselves.” “I never usually say this because I don’t like giving people ammunition, but this team wanted to play John Glenn,” Pouncey said. “They said it yesterday. I don’t like playing [league teams] outside of our league [schedule]. They wanted it and I thought they played hard. “For them not having a spring, summer or fall league program, this is all I could

against Norwalk on Jan. 11, 2006. Four other Glenn players have scored either 42 or 45 points in a single game. Junior Ana Zavala led Glenn with eight rebounds and pitched in with eight points while senior Mayra Ramirez added six points and six rebounds. Glenn had fallen to Bell Gardens 38-29 last Thursday and to Price 54-52 in overtime the next day. The Lady Eagles open up league action on Wednesday against Norwalk. “They played as a unit today,” Parra said. “We limited our turnovers, which was great to see and we had way more shot attempts than Artesia. That really was the difference in the game. They out-rebounded us offensively; every team does, it seems like.” Artesia dropped to 2-12 and didn’t have anyone reach double figures in the entire tournament. Harris had a careerhigh nine points and 12 rebounds against Glenn while senior Daisy Briseno scored a career-best eight points, grabbed a dozen boards and was Artesia’s all-tournament representative. “She is a good leader for us on the floor,” Pouncey said of Briseno. “She directs our defense, she’s rebounding like a champ right now and she’s improved her free throw shooting. The thing about Daisy is she’s the best volleyball player at the school and now she’s starting to emerge as one of the leaders of our basketball team. She obviously made the all-tournament team, but she was well deserving of it and I’m proud of that kid. She’s come a long way.” Yu, the team’s leading scorer, also had eight points and eight rebounds. Artesia was coming off losses to Campbell Hall (66-32) last Thursday and to San Pedro (58-11) last Friday. The Pioneers host Bellflower on Wednesday in their league opener. “We have to get into some physical conditioning,” Pouncey said. “Our basketball shape needs to be better. I have a lot of respect for [Linda] and Chad [Reuter] from Bellflower. To me, they are two of the best coaches in our league. As a coach, I think she’s great. She made some great adjustments off our triangle and two. They did a great job off our box and one. We’ll learn from this and make the adjustments and hopefully be able to play more man to man with them in league.”

ask for,” he continued. “All I want them to do is compete and today they did.” Glenn ended the first quarter on a 7-0 run and when senior Myra Gomez began the second quarter with a three-pointer, the Lady Eagles had a commanding 16-6 lead. Sophomore Savanna Aguilar was the spark Glenn needed in the opening quarter as she scored 10 of her game-high 16 points early on. Aguilar went four of seven from the field with a pair of three pointers in the first quarter. “You’ll see what Savanna can do when teams want to sag in on Gomez, and that’s hit an outside shot,” Parra said. “The only problem with playing Artesia early is Artesia got to see the strength we have. It’s kind of hidden; a lot of people don’t know about Savanna yet. But Savanna needs to adjust and still continue grow as a player.” But the Pioneers chipped away at their deficit and played probably their best quarter of the tournament. Artesia got four points each from juniors Keina Harris and Onica Yu and had 11 of its 44 rebounds in the stanza. The closest the Pioneers would get was three points after Yu’s basket to open the third quarter made it a 22-19 affair. After that, Artesia missed nine straight shots from the field and didn’t score until 1:51 remained in the quarter. “The first four minutes was just tough for us,” Pouncey said. “We don’t have many experienced basketball players. However, the effort that they gave was good. I liked that. The stretch that [Glenn] went on…that’s just part of us not being in basketball shape, yet.” Even though the Lady Eagles were comfortably in front, Artesia tried to make one more comeback in the fourth quarter. In a 35-second span, the Pioneers scored five straight points to trail by a dozen. But Artesia struggled at the free throw line, missing 10 charity shots in the fourth quarter and connecting on only seven of 29 free throws in the game. “My team is not very emotional,” Parra said. “It’s a lot of emotional management with this team of staying up, stay positive, continuing to push hard and don’t let up. I’m trying to get them to buy into defense versus offense.” Gomez, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 13 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Eagles and was coming off a career-high 36 points last Friday against Price in which she went 15 of 17 from the free throw line. Her single game scoring performance ranks seventh best in school history and nine off of the school record set by Angelia Moren in 1991. The 36 points were the most scored by a Glenn player since Brandi Hood poured in 37

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916)939-0772 or visit this Internet Web http://search.nationwideposting.com/propertySearchTerms. aspx, using the file number assigned to this case 20099070812329 Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid. The Purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Mortgagor, the Mortgagee or the Mortgagee’s attorney.
