ews Media Group-Community News has exclusively obtained sexually explicit text messages sent to a female student who is also a part time employee at Cerritos College by a high ranking Cerritos College administrator. The administrator allegedly used his personal cell phone to send sexually charged and profanity laced text messages to a female student/employee of the college on several occasions during 2013, including some after 2 a.m. HMG-CN was sent several emails and copies of the sexually graphic text messages from the student/college employee who said they were generated from the administrator’s previously owned cell phone. By Brian Hews Residents and local businesses looking to own a piece of La Mirada history have the opportunity to purchase any of La Mirada’s vintage residential street signs, on sale now for only $25 each. The brown and cream colored residential street signs, which were replaced in 2008, are a great way to collect La Mirada memorabilia. Some 200 signs have already been sold, and collectors most frequently purchase signs from streets where they, their family members, or friends have lived on. Proceeds from the sale of the street signs are received by the La Mirada Community Foundation, a non-profit corpora-

New Legislation Will Impact ABCUSD Budget

ABC Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Mary Sieu reminded school board members that the preparation of the proposed California State Budget for 2014-2015 will entail the shift from the traditional financing approach to the newly-required Local Control Accountability Plan.
Sieu made her comments during this week’s school board meeting. The Superintendent then directed ABC USD Chief Financial Officer Toan Nguyen to give special attention on the impact the new proposal will have on the Cerritos based district. “The preceding weeks and months prior to submission in June of the ABCUSD

Rene Rodas, a Hawaiian Gardens business owner, attended the January 14 Hawaiian Gardens city council meeting with complaints of “harassment” and “targeting” by the city. During the meeting Rodas claimed that one of his businesses, a used car dealership called KH Auto Sales, was treated unfairly by the city in regard to enforcement activity of “temporary signage.” Rodas complained that he had return to the city council meeting yet again because he felt nothing was being done about the fact that he was unfairly targeted by the city code enforcement. The business owner claimed that this mistreatment is what

Local Residents, 1st CEB Assemble Care Packages
By Charles Sooter On January 14-16, 2014, the City of Cerritos, Friends of the 1st CEB, and local residents assembled, bagged, boxed, and shipped 270 individual gift bags and community care packages (to be shared by all) to the Marines and Sailors from the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, normally stationed at Camp Pendleton, but currently deployed in Afghanistan. Altogether, the shipment filled 61 large boxes, each weighting 70 pounds. In addition, some 120 welcome home gift bags and other assortment of personal items were shipped to the Marines, who have just recently returned or in process of returning to Camp Pendleton, requiring 3 full vans to deliver them. To complete this project required a full community effort with too many sponsors, organizations, and participates to name. The attached pictures shows the layout of the production line, with separate stations for each of the 26 items included in each bag, and also, what a completed product looks like - a full stuffed gift bag. Items that didn’t fit into a gift bag were sent separately as community items to be shared,
such as 3-pound jars of peanut butter. This care package project was dedicated to one Marine in particular, the only Marine who will never receive one of these care packages, a Marine who made the ultimate sacrifice, L/Cpl Matthew Rodriguez. On 11 December 2013, L/Cpl Rodriguez was operating a 6x Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle when it was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED), suffering injuries which led to his death. L/ Cpl Rodriguez was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart Medal, and is buried at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne MA. As a post-script to this project, Major Ryan (Executive Officer) reported that four days after delivery of gift bags to Camp Pendleton, another 51 Marines and Sailors, from Company B, returned home, many without their sea bags, which were loaded on a different aircraft. Fortunately, there were ample welcome home bags with personal hygiene items waiting for these Marines to tide them over. I think that’s actually strength. I’m not going to lean towards a particular school. I will represent them all fairly,” Reagan said. The interview concluded with Reagan saying, “It's nice to feel like it’s a good fit for me, and for the community.”

Dirty Water: Central Basin Municipal Water District President Roybal and Director Vasquez Cashing in on New Positions By Brian Hews and Randy Economy Hews Media Group-Community News has obtained documents from a public records request that show Central Basin Municipal Water District Director Leticia Vasquez and President James Roybal leveraging their new positions at CBMWD, taking in large monthly checks from the embattled agency for attending Board and Committee meetings. Both directors were elected in June 2012 and took office early 2013. They quickly banded with Director Bob Apodaca to form an alliance that would soon pay big dividends. Within one week of taking office, Roybal illegally suspended the CBMWD Administrative Code. Roybal, along with Vasquez and Apodaca, removed Director Art Chacon from the Presidency and installed himself as President. Roybal then removed Chacon and Director Phil Hawkins from all but one committee, giving most to Vasquez and the pay that comes with each meeting. According to Payroll Disbursement Records from CBMWD, since Vasquez gained her new committee appointments, she has garnered over $47,000 in 12 months, taking in as much as $5,600 per month. When contacted by HMG-CN, Vasquez said, “ as a Director on both Central Basin and Metropolitan Water District boards I spend countless hours representing my constituents and understanding the needs of the communities I serve.� Records show that Vasquez has missed several committee and Board meetings citing “previous commitments.� Vasquez was elected to CBMWD under a cloud of shady dealings and contributions from questionable sources. Cerritos There were 19 Part I felony investigations conducted by members of the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station during this week’s reporting period. Three robberies were reported, but only one residential burglary, which is a nice decline from the 4.3 reported weekly in 2013. With the exception of auto thefts, all other Part I crimes also decreased last week. Car burglaries decreased by five from the ten reported the previous week, and auto thefts increased from four to five last week. Calls for service also increased from 244 to 262 last week. Of note was that alarm calls dropped to 25 from the weekly average of 39. The three robberies during this period were committed at a shoe store, a pharmacy, and at a do-it-yourself car wash on Pioneer Boulevard near Del Amo Boulevard. On January 16th about 7:30 p.m., a suspect described as a white male walked into the Payless Shoe Source in the Towne Center and placed several items on the counter, showed the clerk a gun, and demanded money. He fled the location with a pair of shoes, some socks, and about $50 in cash. A short time later, just before 10 p.m., a suspect of similar description entered the CVS on South Street and approached the front counter, produced a gun, and demanded money. The suspect was able to abscond with an unknown amount of money. The final robbery occurred at the car wash on Pioneer Boulevard on January 18th at about 7:15 p.m. A gentleman was washing his car when a suspect described as a male black in his 20s walked up from behind and pointed a handgun at the victim. The suspect demanded money and the victim handed over a small amount of cash from his wallet. The suspect was last seen running north on Pioneer. There is good news to report as the two suspects responsible for these three robberies have been arrested. Although the details are still unknown at this time, officers from the Cypress Police Department have arrested the suspect responsible for the Payless and CVS robberies. In addition to his crimes in Cerritos, he has also been linked to robberies in Anaheim and Fullerton. The suspect in the robbery at the car wash is also in custody following his arrest by detectives from the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau. Only one residential burglary was investigated during this period, but it was noteworthy. On January 16th at about 3:30 p.m., a resident on Destino Place was entertaining a friend when a man described as a male Hispanic knocked on her front door. He claimed to be working on the landscape in the yard behind her home and asked if he could go into the backyard to inspect her side of the fence. The resident let the man in through the side gate and once in the backyard he asked that the victim’s friend also join them. After the friend exited the house the man received a telephone call at which time he answered and began speaking in Spanish. A few moments passed and the victim’s telephone began ringing inside of her home. When the victim’s friend went inside to answer the phone she saw a second man running through the house toward the front door. The first man then quickly ran from the backyard and both men fled the neighborhood. Upon inspection both
ladies observed that a bedroom had been ransacked and various items of jewelry were missing. Distraction burglaries are not common, but they do occur in Cerritos from time-totime, and the suspects usually target older residents. The suspect poses as a utility worker or some type of repairman, but the idea is always the same: get a resident to come out of the house under the guise of inspecting an area out of view of the front door and an accomplice quickly goes inside and straight to the master bedroom where money, jewelry, and other valuables can be found. Whenever anyone shows up unannounced at your door with a story about needing to come inside of your home or in the backyard, be wary. Consider sending the individual away until you can check out the problem for yourself, usually by calling the Gas Company, Edison, or whatever company the guy is representing. If you do agree to let the person into the side or rear of your property, lock your front door and meet him at the side gate. Never get out of view of the entrances to your home. There were no commercial/“other structure” burglaries reported this past week. There were five vehicle burglaries this past week. One occurred during early morning hours at a residence on Reva Street, where three IPods were stolen. The other four crimes occurred in public parking lots, one at the Towne Center and the others at commercial business lots. A third row seat was removed from an SUV, and a purse and wallet were stolen from a vehicle parked at Liberty Park. New Laws for 2014
Every year, new laws or updates to laws already in effect regarding in California. Below are just some of the laws that became effective January 1, 2014, unless noted otherwise. • Bicycle Passing Distance (AB 1371), also known as the Three Feet for Safety Act, requires at least three feet of distance between a moving vehicle and any part of a bicycle or bicyclist travelling in the same direction. When three feet of distance is not possible, the vehicle driver must slow to a “reasonable and prudent speed” and only pass when no danger is present to the bicyclist. This law will take effect September 16, 2014. • Registration and Vehicle Transfers Between Family Members (AB 443) prohibits the transfer of ownership of a vehicle to a relative or revocable living trust

until all parking or toll violation fines and penalties reported to the DMV are paid. • Teen Drivers (SB 194) prohibits a person under the age of 18 from using an electronic wireless communications device to write, send, or read a text-based communication while driving, even if it is equipped with a hands-free device. • Family and Medical Leave Act has been expanded to include caring grandparents, grandchildren, in-laws and siblings in addition to caring for a seriously ill child, spouse, domestic partner or parent. • The retention of information for purchases of shotguns and rifles began. Previously, the information was destroyed within five days. • The State’s minimum wage will be raised to $9 an hour beginning in July. NORWALK SENIOR CENTER LAP ROBE VOLUNTEERS NEED COTTON FABRIC Every Tuesday morning, a dedicated group of volunteers has been meeting at the Norwalk Senior Center to make lap robes from donated fabrics. This endeavor has been going on for over 20 years. The lap robes are donated to local area
nursing homes for the use of residents. The group is currently in need of donations of cotton fabric for the backing for their lap robes; pieces at least one yard long and 44 inches wide. Adults’ age 50 and older that are interested in volunteering to make lap robes may drop by the Norwalk Senior Center on Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m. The Senior Center is located at 14040 San Antonio Drive. The Japanese Imperial Army straggler who emerged from the jungles of Lubang Island, Philippines, 29 years after World War II, died last Thurs.,Jan.16, 2014, in a Tokyo hospital at the age of 91, according to recent reports by Associated Press’ Elaine Kurtenbach. Chief government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said, “I am paying great respect to the strong will to live and indomitable spirit of Hiroo Onoda who chose to stay

in Lubang Island of Oriental Mindoro, Philippines, even after all other Japanese soldiers surrendered to the American troops that liberated Manila and the other parts of the Philippines in early 1945. It is said that the Japanese Imperial Army was taught the code to be loyal and prefer death to surrender. Stories abound that during the American liberation of Manila that started in January of 1945, numerous Japanese soldiers committed “hara-kiri” by jumping to their death over the cliffs of Corregidor Island where their fortress was located just several kilometers off Manila Bay. Not for Onoda in the other side of the Philippines. He stubbornly refused to surrender and hid in the thick jungles of Lubang Island, some 150 miles southwest of Manila. Notwithstanding the four searches that followed after the war during which his relatives made appeals for him to come out over loudspeakers and airplanes dropping leaflets over the mountainous area, the Japanese straggler remained steadfast and ensconced in the forest at least until March of 1974 almost 30 years past the end of the Japanese occupation in the Philippines. He finally emerged only after his original first officer reversed his order to remain and spy on U.S. troops. The officer personally trekked to the island and urged him to come out. Onoda appeared emaciated but erect in his patched up fatigue uniform with cap and sword still in good condition. He fed himself on stealing rice and bananas from the nearby farmers and killed their cows for dried meat, Onoda told of his survival. The last of the Japanese stragglers in the Philippines was presented to then Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos just two years after declaring Martial Law in the country. Onoda also made a sentimental journey to the Philippines in May of 1996.

She said that she did not want her identity made public at this time. For this reason HMG-CN will withhold the name of the administrator until a later time. HMG-CN has learned that the Cerritos College Board of Trustees will recess into a closed meeting tonight after their regular meeting to discuss the investigation. The phone in which the text messages originated came from a number that has been disconnected. In one series of text messages that start at 2:18 a.m., the administrator from a cell phone with the number “+1 (951) 559-6…” appearing as the identifying contact writes to the female student/employee: “Is this _____ (name of victim withheld)?” Student/Employee writes back: “Um, yeah, who is this?” Administrator: “Guess” Student/Employee: “Idk (I don’t know), Ryan?” Administrator: “I’m disappointed in you _______ (name of victim withheld). We had a little session in my office, today. Remember?” Student/Employee: “Oh, Mr. ______(name of administrator withheld)…what and how did you get my number? Student/Employee: “Can you please just leave me alone? : / Administrator: “No. You better not tell anyone about that. I’ll make sure your records at the college cease to exist. I have THAT kind of power.” Student/Employee: “Please, just stop! Leave me alone!” The text messaging between the two stop for a period of ten hours when the administrator then writes the victim again

You did this to me.” The text messages between the administrator and the student/employee stop at this point, but the conversation continues on another day with a 7:05 a.m. time stamped on them. The student/victim then writes the name of the administrator on her phone as the contact person for the number where the text messages originate. Administrator: “Hello.” Administrator: “You going to rat me out?” Administrator: “Where do you live again? Administrator: “I can play this game too ______ (name of student/ employee redacted).” Administrator: “I’m going to keep texting and calling you until you answer me.” Student/Employee: “STOP! I’m changing my number…” Student/Employee: “You’re a pig. I hope you rot.” Administrator: (Redacted) Administrator: (Redacted) Administrator: (Redacted) Administrator: (Redacted) Administrator: (Redacted) The student/employee tells HMG-CN in an email that she had been “a target” of the administrator’s attention in the past, prior to the time in which the above text messages were sent between the two. “The administrator would swing by my (work location at Cerritos College)
in order to flirt with me,” the student/employee told HMG-CN. “Although he is a married man he would insist that me and him go to the (Cerritos) College Stadium so we could _____ (Expletive deleted).” She goes on to tell the newspaper, “the administrator has walked around campus and caught sight of me and then cornered me in secluded areas. He forced himself on me a couple of times and told me, ‘Scream, and you’ll never scream again.” The student/employee writes that she is now “living in fear.” A number of students and former students have contacted HMG-CN complaining about administrators and the Cerritos College Police Department during the past week since publishing an expose on the plight of a former student and retired decorated US Marine Daniel Beckham who is targeted by both college officials and the Los Angeles County District Attorney in an alleged grade tampering scheme. Beckham is due back in Norwalk Superior Court on January 31. REACTION FROM CERRITOS COLLEGE Reaction about the incident allegedly involving the administrator was met swiftly by Dr. Linda Lacy, Superintendent/ President of Cerritos College and Stephen Johnson, who is the Vice President of Student Affairs. “This is the first time we have heard anything about this,” Lacy said. “We can’t comment on something we are just learning about for the first time,” she insisted. Johnson also said that he had “never heard of this before today.” Both Lacy and Johnson said that they plan to have the matter reviewed by the college’s attorneys. Early Wednesday evening, HMG-CN was provided a written statement from Attorney Jon M. Setoguchi, Senior Counsel with the Cerritos based lawfirm Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo who represent Cerritos College. The statement read: “The College takes these matters very seriously. The College is unaware of any complaints filed by a student employee alleging an

inappropriate sexual relationship with the administrator.” Setoguchi then stated to the newspaper that “the College has spoken with the administrator and he categorically denies the allegations.” “The College has not been provided with any evidence supporting the allegations against the administrator. caused him to shut down his business and move to Whittier. Rodas has attended numerous city council meetings in the past to speak on the same issue. At the December 10 meeting, Rodas complained about a letter he received from the city code enforcement division indicating that the banner outside of his businesses was in violation of the Hawaiian Gardens Municipal code, because “banners could not be used indefinitely in lieu of a permanent sign.” Rodas explained that the sign being required of him would cost somewhere between $1,500 and $5,000, instead of his $40 banner. Rodas indicated that other local businesses were not being forced to comply with this same code. Rodas said that his banner does not adversely affect anything and that he pays a lot of taxes, but the city doesn’t care, so he “moved to another city where he won’t be bothered.” Mr. Rodas’ daughter, Gabriela Rodas, added that she understands her fathers concerns, and that while in Hawaiian Gardens, “city employees and sheriff’s officers would point at them.” City Community Development Di-
ketball team participated in its second tournament outside of the district, at the Christmas Middle School Basketball Tournament at Compton High School. And although it lost all three of its games the prior year, this year was a completely different story. The Tetzlaff Trojans dominated the tournament by winning all three by double-digits. After their games, Coach Mendez was approached by several people who asked, “Where are you guys from?” The team was so impressive in their style of play that it caught the attention of other coaches and spectators who took notice. With a tough man-to-man defense, not often seen in middle school, and led by tournament MVP Richard Garcia (8th), the outstanding guard play of Bill Williams (8th), and the defense of Quantraill Spears (7th), the Trojans rolled in the championship game, 44-33. Coach Mendez credits this year’s success to last year’s participation in the same tournament. And although the team did not win a game the previous year, Mendez believes the experience gave him and his players the motivation to perform better the next time around. Mission accomplished!
rector Joe Colombo disputed the Rodas’ comments saying that Whittier actually has a lot more codes, 45 pages versus only 9 in Hawaiian Gardens. Colombo also said that he was told that the Rodas’ family moved for personal reasons, ones that he did not feel comfortable sharing with everyone. Many of the council members, however, seemed to agree with Rodas that the city should be working more with local businesses. Mayor Reynaldo Rodriguez commented that the reason for so many other signs in the city being “missing” is because the businesses are no longer there. Rodriguez continued saying that there are also lots of “mom and pop” stores in Hawaiian Gardens, which makes code enforcement difficult. Councilman Barry Bruce, an advocate of fair but more thorough code enforcement, suggested an incentives program to motivate the businesses to follow the codes. The council concluded that they need to hold a separate meeting to discuss codes, code enforcement, incentives, and business growth strategies and maintenance issues. No specific date was set. The next city council meeting is slated for 6 p.m. on January 28 at the City of Hawaiian Gardens City Hall.

Smith, Artesia send Norwalk to another one possession league loss By Loren Kopff Once again, the Norwalk boys basketball team saw its grasp of a Suburban League victory snatched away in the final minutes. This time, Artesia rallied from 11 points down in the final 2:54 to come away with a 43-41 victory, sending the Lancers to their fourth league loss. Norwalk’s league season has been one that no one has seen in a very long time. All five of its games entering this week have been decided by one possession, as the Lancers fell to 7-13 overall and 1-4 in

the circuit. All four losses in league have been by a combined nine points while the lone victory was by two points over Bellflower. Artesia junior Dontae Smith, who did not start due to a violation of team rules, came off the bench and proved why he has been a starter all season long. Smith scored all 10 of his fourth quarter points as part of the 13-0 run that ended the game and finished with what was a career-high 21 points on seven of 16 shooting from the field and seven of 10 from the line. Smith also led the Pioneers with seven rebounds. “It wasn’t major but it was something we’ve talked about before,” said Artesia head coach Ray Walker of Smith’s early game benching. “He loves to start and he loves to play and we love to have him. But we needed to send a little bit of a message and I’m sure it won’t happen again.” Norwalk was also having its share of personnel problems as senior Rashaad Penny was on a recruiting trip to Fresno State University and senior Dante Foster was saddled with foul trouble throughout the game. Still, the Lancers stayed right with Artesia and led 17-13 at the half as senior Alex Vidana had eight points while Foster added another five points. In fact, the Lancers had erased a six-point deficit to outscore the hosts 10-3 in the second quarter. “We figured if they weren’t going to shoot well, we would pack in the zone and try to be strong in there,” said Norwalk head coach Jim Webster. “We kind of started making some shots in the third quarter but we just panicked.” “We didn’t shoot well and we didn’t

play well offensively,” Walker said. “Defensively, I thought we were fine. When you hold them to 17 [points], that’s great. Norwalk is tough; obviously every league game is tough. They caused us not to play well on the offensive side.” Foster picked up his third foul just 65 seconds into the second half but Norwalk still maintained its lead, which grew to 24-17 with 5:22 left in the third quarter. The Pioneers rallied all the way back to take a one-point lead late in the stanza. But the Lancers dominated the first part of the fourth quarter, going on a 15-3 run to lead 41-30. That’s when the tide abruptly changed. Smith scored on an offensive rebound, then sank four straight free throws, the latter two after Foster had fouled out, and with 1:45 left to play, Norwalk was up 4136. Then with 1:05 remaining, Smith scored on a steal and with 16.5 seconds left, Smith connected on two more free throws to put Artesia in front 42-41. Webster immediately called a timeout but a turnover on the in-bound play gave the Pioneers possession and Smith hit another free throw with 10.2 seconds left. Sophomore Keno Valdenor’s long desperation’s three-pointer clanked off the glass at the buzzer. “Considering we were without Rashaad Penny and Dante probably played six minutes the whole game, the guys fought hard to get in position to win,” Webster said. “To panic at the end and blow it…we handed them ball. We couldn’t be strong enough to handle the ball.” “We picked up the pace a little bit and we finally started making our free throws,” Walker said. “That put us in a hole early; we didn’t shoot the ball well early on. It was a nice come from behind win.” Besides Smith, the rest of the Pioneers combined to go seven of 32 from the field and seven of 12 from the charity stripe. This past Wednesday night, the Pioneers had no problems with John Glenn in a 6343 victory. Smith posted a career-high 22 points while junior Chris Pendley came off the bench to add a career-high 16 points as the Pioneers improved to 14-5 overall and 3-2 in league. Artesia visits Mayfair tonight, then hosts Cerritos to begin the second round of league play. In addition, the Pioneers are ranked seventh in the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division III-A coach’s poll. ACADEMY LEAGUE BASKETBALL Whitney girls struggle early, pull away late for big win By Loren Kopff As the Whitney girls basketball team steamrolls towards its fourth straight Academy League title and sixth in the past eight seasons, competition for the Lady Wildcats is hard to find. But this past Tuesday night, St. Margaret’s provided that little burst of push for Whitney. The Lady Wildcats trailed throughout most of the first quarter but opened the second quarter on a 14-2 run and went on to slam the Tartans 62-45 in a battle of the top two teams in the league. Whitney, the ninth ranked team in the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division IV-AA poll, improved to 16-2 overall and 4-0 in league. St. Margaret’s, ranked 12th in Division IV-A, dropped to 12-5 overall and 3-1 in the circuit. “I think they live to beat us,” said Whitney head coach Jeff Day. “They haven’t beaten us in four seasons. They have a couple of good seniors who have never beaten Whitney. They’re not going to lie down. They want to beat us; they’re playing for a league championship.” Day pointed out that the top two players who were going to score for St. Margaret’s were Yamilli Burgos and Julianna Coleman and sure enough, that was the case. Both scored five points in the opening quarter, then Burgos sank a pair of three-pointers each in the second and third quarters. “There were no surprises,” Day said. “Even since last year, [Burgos and Coleman] were going to score 85-90 percent of their points and they were going to shoot three-pointers. They did exactly what I thought they were going to do.” Meanwhile, senior Reyna Ta’amu was keeping Whitney in the game in the first

quarter, scoring eight points while her tag team partner, senior Rachel Nagel, had six steals and two rebounds in the opening stanza, despite scoring just two points. But with a slim 18-14 lead early in the second quarter, Nagel took over and left the Tartans playing a game of ‘come and get me’ the rest of the way. Nagel scored nine straight points as the Lady Wildcats increased their lead to 27-14 with 3:38 left in the half. During that stretch, she scored on one of her 13 defensive rebounds, then one on one of her 13 steals, and finally completed a nontraditional three-point play. “We’ve been starting slow with no sense of urgency,” Day said. “Some of it is because they haven’t had a close game since before Christmas. But I’ve told them if you give a team that’s decent a chance to be in a ball game, you never know what’s going to happen.” After St. Margaret’s had cut the Whitney lead to nine points (29-20), the hosts reeled off nine straight points to end the half. Nagel and Ta’amu combined to score 28 of the team’s 38 points in the first half. The closest the Tartans would get in the second half was 14 points after Coleman hit her second trifecta of the game. But the Lady Wildcats would keep

their lead hovering around 20 points and went up 62-40 with 2:29 left in the game on a three-pointer from senior Alyssa Wakamiya. That would be Whitney’s largest lead of the game. Nagel led everyone with 26 points, her highest in four league games this season, while Ta’amu added 23 points, also her high in league this season. Despite the number of double digit victories Whitney has already strung together, Day pointed out some areas that the team needs to improve on in order to get even that much better for the playoffs and even go far in the postseason. “Defense, conserving energy, sticking with the game plan and not trying to do too much,” he said. “Most of the girls understand their roles and for the next month, they have to get in better shape. When we get to the playoffs, we’re only going to use one or two subs.” Following the game, the Whitney boys squad continued to swim as little fish in the big pond that is the Academy League, succumbing to St, Margaret’s 68-36. The Tartans opened the game on an 18-1 run and never let Whitney get closer than 14 points the remainder of the game. “We lacked effort and energy,” said Whitney head coach Ruben Guerrero.
“They’re still young and they’re learning how to get focused and prepare for a game.” Sophomore Luigi Gonzales led Whitney with nine points on three perimeter shots while junior Antony Thomas added eight points and six rebounds as nine different players scored for the Wildcats, who dropped to 5-12 overall and 1-4 in league action. Both Whitney teams will visit rival Oxford Academy tonight to end the first round of league play. The Wildcats will then travel to Downey Calvary Chapel on Tuesday night. For the boys, their lone league win came against Downey Calvary Chapel on Jan. 7. But two of their four league losses have been by a combined 12 points. “Going into the second round of the season, we’re definitely going to need some help from other teams to put us in a position to make the playoffs,” Guerrero said. “If we split with [Sage Hill and Crean Lutheran] and get some help from around the league, we could possibly squeak into the playoffs. But overall, my general concern is just having these guys mentally focused and ready for each game and getting to play aggressive.”
ARTESIA GIRLS SOCCER STUMBLES AGAINST UP AND COMING NORWALK By Loren Kopff There are few teams that the Artesia girls soccer program has dominated over the course of time, but one of them is Norwalk. The Pioneers entered last Friday afternoon’s contest having won 12 straight over the Lady Lancers, allowing just three goals during that time. But three minutes into overtime, Norwalk took advantage of a mistake in the penalty box and came away with a 1-0 win. Norwalk improved to 7-6-2 overall and 3-2 in the Suburban League and vaulted to third place. The Pioneers fell to 9-5-2, 1-3 at the time. “I haven’t had the opportunity to watch Norwalk [before today’s game] but I heard they were a much improved team,” said Artesia head coach Octavio Marquez. “I was concerned, honestly, going into the game. We’re an inexperienced team.” Artesia took seven shots on goal in the first half but the closest it came to finding the back of the net came in the 33rd minute when senior midfielder Tiffany Castillo’s shot hit the crossbar. In the 56th minute, a shot from freshman forward Mary Sanchez was stopped by Norwalk junior goalkeeper Cynthia Flores. It would be the only shot Artesia took in the second half. In the opening moments of overtime,

It was the most lopsided victory ever against Glenn since a 10-0 win on Jan. 28, 1998. Artesia, now 10-5-2 overall and 2-3 in the circuit, visits Mayfair today to end the first round of league, then host Cerritos on Wednesday. The Lady Lancers dropped a 4-0 decision to La Mirada this
past Wednesday and ended the first round of league action at 3-3 and in third place. Norwalk visits Bellflower on Wednesday as Artesia and Bellflower are fighting for fourth place and that final automatic spot for the postseason. “It’s not that we’re not putting the effort in,” Marquez said. “It’s just the experience. We don’t have that experience to finish teams off. It’s going to be real difficult. We pretty much have to win out in order to finish in the top four.” In other girls soccer action, Cerritos fell to Bellflower 2-1 this past Wednesday and dropped to 3-10-1 overall and 1-4 in the Suburban League. The Lady Dons hosted first place La Mirada on Jan. 24. Valley Christian improved to 11-5-3 overall and 2-0 in the Olympic League following a 4-1 win at Heritage Christian this past Tuesday. The Lady Crusaders host Whittier Christian this evening to end the first round of league action. BOYS SOCCER Artesia remained in first place in the Suburban League after defeating John Glenn 3-1 this past Wednesday. The Pioneers, who have won three straight league titles, improved to 10-5-4 overall and 3-0-2 in league and will host Mayfair today before visiting Cerritos on Wednesday. Glenn dropped to 3-16 overall and 0-5 in league and has lost five straight since defeating Artesia in the final game of the Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary Cardinal Classic last month. The surprise team in the area continues to be Valley Christian, which got past heritage Christian 40-35 this past Tuesday night. CBMWD could be on the hook for triple damages amounting to over $8.1 million plus fraud charges if found guilty. Vazquez, as a plaintiff herself, could walk away with over $2 million. Vasquez, who was recalled as a Councilmember in scandal plagued Lynwood, and according to sources, avoided prosecution by turning state’s evidence that helped send many of her then-colleagues to prison, is now a self-proclaimed whistleblower. Vasquez was elected to CBMWD under a cloud of shady dealings and contributions from questionable sources. Engineering firm HDR, Sedgewick attorney Doug Wance, Ernie Camacho and his company Pacifica, MLJ Properties, owned by Camacho’s children, and Ron and Tom Calderon gave Vasquez over $14,000 for her campaign. Most of the contributors are now targets of the FBI and its investigation of CBMWD and the Calderons. In addition, in February an exclusive HMG-CN investigation revealed that Vasquez’ campaign was financed by convicted felon Rick Meyer and Angle Gonzalez, who was charged with a felony but pled down to a misdemeanor. Documents and interviews point to Vazquez having the lawsuit in mind from the very start of her term at CBMWD using insider information not available to the general public to file the lawsuit against her own public agency. Vasquez was sworn into office on January 7, 2013. By then Vazquez knew of the $2.7 million slush fund through administrative briefings given by then General Manager Chuck Fuentes, Assistant GM Ron Bielke, and CBMWD Attorney Arnold Glassman. It was Fuentes, Bielke and Glassman who originally found the obscure fund. Within days of the swearing-in, Vasquez formed a voting-bloc majority that included President James Roybal and Director Bob Apodaca. The three immediately moved to suspend provisions of the Administrative Code and circumvent the proper selection of a Board President, ousting Director Art Chacon, who was the most vocal critic of the slush fund, and removing Chacon and Director Phil Hawkins from several committees. In a highly unusual and controversial move, Vasquez voted to fire Fuentes, Bielke, and Glassman, removing those responsible for finding the slush fund. The three were preparing to hire a firm to audit the fund but Sedgewick LLP, the firm paid over $1,000,000 from the fund and their attorney Douglas Wance, were

But the fact remained, and Vasquez knew, that an investigation had started and information was being reported, which resulted in Director Chacon dubbing it the slush fund. The question remains as to why Vazquez put a stop to the investigation by firing Fuentes, Bielke, and Glassman. HMG-CN became aware of the whistleblower lawsuit when the item was “reported out” of Closed Session following the October 3, 2013 Board meeting. The report showed that the Board had discussed a “Qui Tam whistleblower matter” and that CBMWD hired special counsel Craig Engle with the State’s Attorney General Office to represent the District. The case number is BC 518653. An audio of the Jan. 6 Special Board meeting indicates attorney Richard Padilla warning Vasquez of a potential financial conflict in relation to Item 3B which was discussed in closed session. Vasquez participated in the session ignoring Padilla’s warning.
