As to whether Lakewood is still a very safe place to live in, the captain assured the residents that “the answer

is an overwhelming yes.” Ladenheim told city officials that there has been a decreasing crime trend in Lakewood over a 15 year period from 1998 to 2013. The Captain is also inviting residents to join him for coffee on Wednesday, Feb. 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Starbucks located on 4833 Candlewood St. along Lakewood’s conspicuous restaurant row. “Come out and join me at Starbucks, the coffee is on me. “You can also ask any questions you want to,” Captain Ladenheim announced. Regarding the shooting, he said, my deputies have reached out to the block captains and residents in the affected area immediately after the incident. He added, “Initial investigation pointed out that the shooting is not gang-related and is an

isolated case. “Lakewood is still one of the safest cities in Southern California.” Asked by Vice Mayor Todd Rogers “if they have any lead yet?” the Captain replied, “It is still too early to tell.” He supported his previous statements with a 15- period crime trend presentation that illustrated through charts a continuously decreasing rate of crimes in the city. He noted, however, that although violent crimes have been successfully abated, property crime is still very much present with vehicle theft and burglaries as the main culprits. “That’s why we urge people of Lakewood to ‘say something when they see something’ which actually is our ongoing slogan along with our most valuable anti-crime tool – the Neighborhood Watch, “explained Ladenheim. After his presentation, the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station Captain thanked the city’s Public Safety Commission in partnering with them in their fight against crime as well as the City Council for the helping out procured the new measures we now use to increase public safety. He singled out the automated vehicle plate identifier and the mobile digital computer systems that equipped all police cars in the city. “We are lucky in having these formidable tools that we haven’t had in other cities,” expressed the captain. The other anticrime tools used by the city are the Fume Alert and the Sky Knight. City Council Member Diane DuBois thanked all concerns including her fellow members in the City Council in keeping the city as safe as possible. She made special mention of the Sky Knight as a super deterrent to crime but she quickly added, “We also must always be alert especially with the State Governor’s new thrust toward local control, every city will now have to take care of its own.” Mayor Steve Croft thanked Captain Ladenheim for his presentation and forthcoming “Coffee with the Captain” which he said, “are of utmost importance especially with the residents if only to let them know that the City is really doing everything it can in their behalf.” “Some people are not even aware,” the mayor ended.

AOL Newsite Patch Fires Hundreds of Editors By Randy Economy It appears that the news website Patch.com is on its last leg after hundreds of employees were let go on Wednesday morning, without apparent warning. Several media outlets are reporting that the decision to scale back Patch means that most of the network's local websites will cease to produce news, local or otherwise immediately. The decision was made by Hale Global, who was hailed as the "turn-

around experts" that bought Patch.com from AOL in early January. According to a story on Breitbart. com, employees were stunned about the sudden pink slips. "[W]e were all laid off this morning without being given the opportunity to let our readers know that we are gone," one wrote in a social media posting Wednesday afternoon. Locally, Patch operated a website in Cerritos. The site had dedicated much of its content on local press releases that were generated by Cerritos city officials, as well as posting of local food truck locations and Hello Kitty events. Local Cerritos resident Mary Sam Sanches first edited the site but resigned a few months ago.

There were 21 Part I felonies reported during this week’s reporting period, which is an increase of two over the 19 reported the previous week. The good news was that no robberies were reported, but residents did report six residential burglaries, about twice the weekly average thus far in 2014. The Sheriff’s also received reports of a locker burglary, eight vehicle burglaries, three grand thefts, and three stolen vehicles. The dispatch center handled 284 calls for service. . Five of the six residential burglaries occurred on the east side of Cerritos. On January 22 unknown suspects kicked in the front door on Kensington Avenue, and on January 24 a similar burglary occurred on Leslie Avenue. Both burglaries took place between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The suspects took cash, an iPad, a computer, and a camera. On January 23 unknown suspects entered an unlocked sliding door on Judy Way and stole cash, a television, an Xbox, and a computer. A bicycle was removed from a garage on Cantrece Street on January 25 or 26, when an unknown suspect took a garage door remote control from an unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway and used it to open the garage door. Finally, sometime between January 23 through January 25, unknown suspects stole a coin collection and other items from two homes, one on Donna Avenue and the other on Cobblestone Court that were in the process of being fumigated. Residents are cautioned to never leave valuables inside of homes being fumigated as they are left unlocked and easy targets for burglars. The Cerritos Sheriff’s Station has portable alarms which deputies will install in homes undergoing the fumigation process. Once installed, these alarms notify the Sheriff’s dispatch center should anyone enter a tented home. Interested Cerritos residents can contact the station at (562) 860-0044 for more information. On January 22 a locker burglary was reported at the L.A. Fitness on Alondra Boulevard. The crime occurred between the hours of 10:45 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. The lock was removed and two cell phones and a wallet were stolen. It is strongly recommended that when visiting a fitness center you leave valuables at home if possible, or at least locked in a trunk prior to leaving for your gym workout. There were eight vehicle burglaries reported this past week, up from the 2014 weekly average of 5.8. Four of the vehicle burglaries occurred in residential areas and four in public parking lots. A bible, a backpack, a guitar, an iPod, and $400 in cash were stolen from vehicles parked in residential areas. These vehicle burglaries apparently occurred during the late night and early morning hours. On January 21, between 9 and 10 p.m., a wallet and a camera were stolen from an SUV parked in a commercial parking lot on Norwalk Boulevard. Another vehicle burglary occurred at a school on Artesia Boulevard on January 24 between 7 and 8 p.m. A backpack was stolen from a Mazda at this second location. On the afternoon of Sunday, January 26, at the Los Cerritos Center, the driver’s side door lock on an SUV was punched, but no property was taken. Unfortunately, another burglary

that should never happen occurred at Cerritos Regional Park. Between the hours of 2 and 3:10 p.m., unknown suspects shattered a rear window on a Mazda and stole a purse that contained a Social Security card and credit cards. As with fitness center lockers, never take valuables with you when exercising at our local parks if at all possible. Put your driver’s license in your pocket and leave purses and other valuables at home. Three grand thefts were reported, including a purse with $800 stolen from a business on South Street and jewelry from a home on Rocky River Lane. Three vehicles were also reported stolen during this period, including an older model Honda Civic and a new Chevy Cruz from residential areas and an older Ford Taurus from a commercial parking lot on South Street near Carmenita Road.

CERRITOS COLLEGE

Continued from page 1 sonal attacks against me - some you know about, and some you do not - that it is no longer possible for me to effectively represent faculty members in the senate or to handle matters in Judicial Affairs.” “I am stepping down from both positions as of today,” Chester wrote. He went on to state: “Thank you to everyone who has supported me, and I sincerely wish you all the best. As always, Bob.” Chester will maintain his position as a Professor in the English Department. Currently, Chester is one of the key players in a criminal probe of former Marine veteran Daniel Beckham who is now facing 12 felony counts in a grade rigging scheme. Beckham has maintained his innocence in the matter in several past interviews with Hews Media Group-Community Newspaper. Chester has been a lightning rod on the campus during the past years. Last year, HMG-CN reported that Chester went on a public rant during a meeting when he called Cerritos College a “homophobic institution.” His comments were quickly denounced by several students, and many called for him resignation. On Tuesday, Chester apparently went on another “vulgar” rant during a meeting of the Faculty Senate and his remarks were immediately denounced by Philosophy professor Ted Stoltz. Stoltz wrote Chester after the meeting the following email, that was obtained by HMG-CN. “At today’s faculty senate meeting I was deeply offended by your vulgar attempt to explain why there would be no cookies available (I won’t relate the “joke”),” Stoltz wrote. “I don’t care how you speak in private, but I do care as a colleague how my senate president addresses a public meeting. Sexist humor in such a forum is not acceptable,” Stolze continued. “Moreover, near the end of the meeting you expressed your view that the current Board of Trustees is threatening the very existence of our school. This is at least the third time I have heard you publicly engage in such polemics, and, frankly, I am tired of them,” Stolze wrote. “Although I do not make a habit of uncritically supporting anyone in a position of authority, I cannot for the life of me understand why you are so threatened by the new Board of Trustees. This Board, like any, has its flaws, but it is more diverse and representative of the communities that our college serves than any I have seen since I’ve taught here (ten years). Clearly we have a difference of judgment. But that’s not the issue,” Stolze said. “I don’t care as a colleague whether or not you criticize board members in private, but I do care how my senate president addresses a public meeting. Trashing duly elected officials in a public meeting over which you preside is not acceptable,” Stoltze stated in his letter. “I shall unfailingly support you or any other colleague who exercises his or her academic freedom in any campus forum. But I shall not hesitate to exercise my own when I believe that a colleague has overstepped the bounds of responsible speech,” Stolze concluded. HMG-CN will be publishing an audio version of Chester’s remarks from the Faculty Senate Meeting as soon as it becomes available from Cerritos College officials.

Chester’s Faculty Senate Rant ‘Mocked’ Vietnamese Women By Randy Economy and Brian Hews Cerritos College Faculty Senate President Robert “Bob” Chester made derogatory comments in public early this week that compared the campus leadership to prostitutes from Vietnam. Hews Media Group-Community Newspaper received both an audio tape as well as a written transcript of the remarks on Thursday. Chester can be heard stating at the beginning of the Cerritos College Faculty Senate Meeting, where he served as President until his resignation on Tuesday afternoon said the following: “Let’s begin with the really horrendous news first. You’ll notice no cookies. Guess what, no money, no money, just like the old days in Saigon- no money, no honey, ok. No money, no cookies. If you want cookies, give money. Simple. End of cookies report.” In the meantime, Cerritos College Superintendent Linda Lacey sent out a statement via their legal counsel, specifically dealing with Chester’s abrupt resignation as both the leader of the Faculty Senate and Coordinator of Judicial Affairs. “Mr. Chester has served and will continue to serve Cerritos College students and the community for many years. He is a valued member of the Cerritos College Faculty and has served the College in a variety of roles over the years, including twice serving as president of the faculty senate, most recently this year. This year he also took on the responsibility of serving as a faculty member in the role of judicial affairs coordinator handling sensitive issues relating to student discipline.” Lacey said. “While Mr. Chester has resigned from these two positions, he will resume his role as a full-time classroom instructor,” Lacey continued. “The College appreciates his service in these additional roles. He is leaving his appointments solely for personal reasons. His position as Academic Senate President will be filled according to Senate policy. His faculty appointment as judicial affairs coordinator is being handled by an interim dean at this time, with a permanent replacement to be announced at the end of the school year.”

LIBRARY

Continued from page 1 and with their range of resources, they’re invaluable when it comes to studying. However, reading up on a topic of choice needn’t be done in a bland and boring building, as the following institutions demonstrate. And while it’s the books and facilities that make a library, being in lovely surroundings may provide inspiration and help you to work that little bit harder. Whether they feature sleek, eyecatching architecture or extravagant interiors, the 50 libraries on this list are the most beautiful in the world.” The article’s description of the Cerritos Library states: “Cerritos’ Millennium Library is pioneering in more than one way. As well as being the USA’s first building to be covered with titanium paneling, it has also been termed the first “Experience Library,” because the facility puts a spotlight on fascinating themed areas, stunning art and interesting architecture. There is a children’s library that incorporates a marine aquarium with coral

and sharks, while for the more grown-up scholar, the Old World Reading Room is inspired by 19th-century European design and is outfitted with chandeliers and a fireplace. Californian architects Charles Walton Associates were responsible for the sleek and shining addition to the city, and the building was finished in 2002.” The Best Value Schools website presents information about how to get the most value in an undergraduate or graduate degree.

LAWSUIT

Continued from page 1 bal must ask the district to defend him and that a Board vote is required. Lat year, Fuentes settled with JPIA for $50,000. Sources said that Roybal was “very angry” and subsequently leaked the settlement to the WDN in retaliation. When JPIA, the insurance carrier for CBMWD, found out that Roybal leaked the settlement, they threatened to drop CBMWD as a client. Sources tell HMG-CN that JPIA will not defend Roybal and that he and CBMWD will have to retain their own attorney and pay the settlement. “This was an idiotic action by Roybal,” said one high-level source inside CBMWD, “Roybal’s leaking of the settlement agreement made JPIA very angry. So instead of having JPIA handle and settle the lawsuit, Roybal has exposed himself and CBMWD to a more damaging and potentially costlier lawsuit. Attorney Silva Berejian filed the lawsuit with the Glendale law firm of Kirakosian & Associates. Berejian said that Roybal and Central Basin Municipal Water District gave confidential information to Sprague and “revived the dispute in the media, disclosed the amount of the compromise and settlement, and instead elected to repudiate the agreement and to disparage and discredit Fuentes.” The complaint also states that “Defendant James Roybal acting both individually and in his capacity as President of the District, made several statements to the Sprague concerning Plaintiff and the parties’ agreement,” to deliberately discredit Fuentes. In the article, Fuentes is charging that Roybal “materially breached the Settlement Agreement” and that the statements made by Roybal were the source of an article published by the Whittier Daily News on or about June 4, 2013. “Based on reviewing the article published, Plaintiff (Fuentes) alleges that Defendants divulged the amount of the Settlement Agreement in direct contravention of the parties confidentially agreement, and made statements to the newspaper to the effect that Plaintiff was fired in January from his position as interim chief executive.” According to the lawsuit, statements made by Roybal, “the deal sets a bad precedent; and further stated that “we never broke any part of his contract,” and “to reward him when we didn’t break the contract seems like a gift of public funds.” The lawsuit claims that the statements by Roybal in the Whittier Daily News article, “materially breached the Settlement Agreement which prohibited Defendants from divulging the amount of the settlement.” The lawsuit also claims that Roybal acted “in an abusive and malicious manner for several reasons, including to retaliate against Plaintiff (Fuentes) and to reignite a controversy over whether the Defendants had “fired” Plaintiff, as opposed to released him from his employment agreement according to its terms.”

JANUARY 31, 2014

Fuentes alleges “the very reason for the Settlement Agreement and Release was to fully and finally resolve the dispute between the parties, to avoid adverse publicity by keeping the agreement confidential and to ensure that the parties would put things behind them.” Attorney Berejian told HMG-CN in a telephone interview on Thursday afternoon that Fuentes has “dedicated the last 40 years of his life serving the people of Southeast Los Angeles County as a true public servant.” “People like Chuck Fuentes don’t deserve to be treated like this. Mr. Fuentes is a force for positive change and will continue to dedicate his life for the betterment for this entire region,” Berejian said. Berejian said that Central Basin Water District officials have 30 days to respond to the lawsuit, and confirmed that Roybal was “personally handed the lawsuit by Process Servers” at the Commerce headquarters of the besieged public agency. “There has been a pattern on behalf of Mr. Roybal to divulge personal and confidential information about employees like Chuck Fuentes and others during the past year, especially to members of the media. We are confident that our lawsuit will be successful,” Berejian concluded. A complete copy of the lawsuit is available at www.loscerritosnews.net.

Valley Christian girls finish strong for onepoint overtime victory By Loren Kopff LA HABRA-It wasn’t the prettiest of wins but for Ally Wade, she will block out all of the negatives for a moment and take her Valley Christian girls basketball team’s 10th victory of the season. The second-year head coach and former Long Beach State University standout witnessed her team rally from eight points down to begin the fourth quarter and nip Whittier Christian 41-40 in overtime last Friday night on the road. The Lady Crusaders went 1-25 last

season in Wade’s rookie campaign. But after the victory over the Heralds, V.C. improved to 10-12 overall and 3-1 in the Olympic League. In addition, V.C. has won eight of its past 13 games. “I don’t even think I can put it into words,” Wade said. “I’m sitting here trying to find a word for it. The one word that just comes to my mind is heart. I just want the girls and myself to enjoy it because I know thinking back, I can just run through my mind the turnovers, the [lack of] offensive rebounds and the free throws missed.” Although the Lady Crusaders shot 32 percent from the field and missed 21 free throws, their defense came through in the fourth quarter and in overtime. It all started when senior Makenna Mageo hit a three-pointer in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter. It would be her only points of the stanza, although she did grab four rebounds, have an assist and a steal in the final eight minutes of regulation. With 3:26 left in regulation, Mageo assisted on junior Cherilyn DeJong’s lone field goal of the game, which tied the score at 33-33. Almost a minute later, the Lady Crusaders took the lead on senior Amanda Chamberlain’s bucket. DeJong had filled in nicely for Chamberlain, who was plagued with foul trouble in the first quarter. “Cherilyn did a fantastic job for us tonight,” Wade said. “She came in and accepted her role when Amanda was coming back [for her senior season]. She just did a fantastic job on Sydney Lopez. She was the key person we needed to stop tonight and she came in and defended well and had a few buckets for us. She was just

strong.” Lopez scored 17 of Whittier Christian’s 30 points through the first three quarters but was held to four points the rest of the way and fouled out late in the game. Meanwhile, it still wasn’t looking good for V.C. in overtime, falling down by three points with 2:46 left to play. But Mageo’s three-point play with 45.6 seconds remaining put her team up by one and her free throw with 28 seconds left was the game-winner. The game was sealed when Hannah Yoshihara missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer following a Whittier Christian timeout with 5.9 seconds left to play. Although she missed five free throws in the extra session, senior Amber Binford had a crucial steal late in overtime and led the team with seven steals. “We played a lot of 13 defense tonight, but she’s the top of it,” Wade said of Binford. “She’s our point guard and she’s the top of every defense we run. I told her a long time ago, as she goes, we go. She starts the tempo right away as they’re bringing the ball to us. Her defense was key to us winning.” V.C. had trailed throughout most of the first half but never by more than four points. A three-pointer by Mageo put the visitors up by three at halftime and another one from junior Hailey Garcia opened the second half scoring. But Whittier Christian went on a 16-2 run the remainder of the third quarter to put the Lady Crusaders in a hole. “We need to be able to take care of the ball,” Wade said. “We stopped doing what was working. We kind of relaxed. We were playing not to lose instead of, hey. We can beat this team.” Mageo led V.C. with 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and had five thefts while Chamberlain added 11 points and eight boards as the team already has more victories than the previous two seasons combined. The Lady Crusaders are hoping to end a two-season playoff drought. “I had a lot of faith in our girls,” Wade said. “Just seeing the huge strides we’ve taken from last year to this year. They just have to have confidence in themselves. That’s the number one thing. I hope this game is the turn of the page for us to realize that we can beat anyone.” Following the game, the V.C. boys went in an offensive slump in the second half and what was a close game through three quarters turned into a 53-33 Whittier Christian rout. The Crusaders dropped to 9-13 overall, 1-3 in league. “The game plan didn’t change much,” said V.C. head coach Bryan Branderhorst.

“All night long we didn’t do a good job on the glass. We gave them easy opportunities. Offensively, we were pretty anemic tonight and when you put a lot of pressure on your defense, after a while it just can’t hold up anymore. We just weren’t very good.” V.C. trailed 24-19 at the half and was still within striking range heading into the fourth quarter (32-26). But with 6:41 left in the game, sophomore Vaj Rice received a technical foul and Kaipo Villeza converted on both free throws, then scored a basket on the ensuing possession. From there, Whittier Christian went on a 12-5 run to go up by 20 points with 1:58 remaining in the game. Sophomore Stedman Bryant, hampered with an injury from earlier in the week, led the Crusaders with 10 points while Rice added half a dozen points and 12 rebounds. A staggering stat for the V.C. was in the rebounding department where the team pulled down 23 for the game, 17 on the defensive end. “That’s not going to cut it,” Branderhorst said. “We gave them too many second shots. Sometimes the rebounding total is a little bit deceptive depending on the pace of the game. But they just got too many second shots and that’s the number I’m worried about especially.” Both V.C. teams will host Maranatha tonight and Village Christian on Tuesday.

SUBURBAN LEAGUE BOYS SOCCER Artesia unable to finish off Mayfair, trails first place by four points By Loren Kopff The Artesia boys soccer program has been the best in the Suburban League over the past three-plus seasons, going 31-0-3 since it last lost a league contest to Bellflower on Jan. 26, 2011. But winning a fourth consecutive league crown is going to be much harder this season with a younger squad. With the Pioneers chasing Bellflower for the top spot in league, they missed several scoring chances against Mayfair last Friday and ended up tying the Monsoons 1-1. Artesia had won seven straight against Mayfair but more importantly, it ended the first round of league action four points behind Bellflower. The Pioneers entered this week with a 10-5-5 overall

record and 3-0-3 in league. “It’s been like that a lot because we don’t have the experience up top,” said Artesia head coach Rudy Magallon. “The chances are there. We just have to put them away. “We had the breaks. We just didn’t put it in,” he continued. “In the first half, we had five or six clear chances.” Artesia struck first just three minutes into the game when senior forward Anthony Serrano fed a pass to freshman forward Jorge Pantoja who notched his fourth goal of the season, third in league action. After that, the Pioneers put pressure on Mayfair goalkeeper Chris Van Putten eight more times in the half but came away empty each time. In the 16th minute, Serrano received a pass from Pantoja but his shot barely went off to the left side if the net. Five minutes later, freshman midfielder Francisco Sierra sent a pass to Pantoja whose header was saved by Van Putten. Then in the 58th minute, a shot from Sierra went off to the right side of the net

and three minutes after that, a shot from senior defender Ari Claro hit the crossbar and his rebound was saved by Mayfair’s other goalie, Anthony Oseguera. With time running out on the Monsoons, the Pioneers thought they had preserved the victory when senior midfielder Hernan Hernandez cleared a potential tying goal. That resulted in a corner kick which led to Jeremy Monroe tying the game in the 78th minute. “They’re going to make a push because they need the equalizer,” Magallon said. “They got the opportunity to put it away. If you make a mistake and leave them wide open, they’re going to put it in the net.” Artesia totally dominated the 20-minute overtime session, getting off seven shots to none from Mayfair. The best chances in the extra session came in the 86th minute when Sierra sent a pass to sophomore forward Steven Espinosa, who couldn’t get a clear shot on goal. Then with three minutes remaining in the game, Claro took an indirect kick from four yards

outside the penalty box. But his shot was saved by Oseguera. In all, Artesia took 20 shots on goal while the Monsoons took eight shots. The Pioneers began the second round of league action this past Wednesday against last place Cerritos and will visit La Mirada today. The league title could be on the line Monday when Artesia hosts Bellflower. The first time around, those two teams played to a scoreless tie. Artesia will also host John Glenn on Wednesday. Artesia has been league champions six times in the past 16 seasons, finished in second place five times during that same time and in third place four times since 1998. “I don’t know if they’re catching up [to us],” Magallon said of the league. “In high school that’s the way it is. Everyone is going to play us hard. For the past 20 years, it’s been Artesia and three more, or two more in the playoffs. They want something that we’ve had for the past three years.”

CERRITOS BOYS HOOPSTERS STAY CLOSE TO SUBURBAN LEAGUE TOP SPOT

By Loren Kopff

After finishing in fourth place in the Suburban League with identical 6-6 marks in each of the past two seasons, the Cerritos boys basketball team is moving up. The Dons outscored host Artesia 3319 in the second and third quarters and went on to defeat the Pioneers 53-39 this past Wednesday. Cerritos improved to 12-9 overall, 5-2 in league and remained in third place, half a game behind idle La Mirada and two games behind Mayfair. In addition, the Dons swept the season-series from the Pioneers for the first time since 2009 and won on Artesia’s court for the third straight season and sixth out of the last seven. With the score tied 13-13, the Dons went on a 9-0 run over a three-minute span in the middle of the second quarter and never looked back. Sophomore Evan Leonard led everyone with 21 points and eight rebounds while junior Henry Buycks added 14 points and 10 boards. Cerritos will visit slumping John Glenn tonight before hosting Bellflower on Wednesday. Artesia (14-7, 3-4) received 11 points off the bench from senior Jon Campbell and nine more from junior Dontae Smith. The Pioneers will host La Mirada tonight before travelling to Bellflower on Monday and Glenn on Wednesday. In other boys basketball action, Gahr was sporting an overall mark of 10-10 and 2-2 in the San Gabriel Valley League entering its road tilt with Lynwood this

After winning six games in November and December, Glenn has found life in the Suburban League rough thus far. The Eagles were 7-13 overall and 1-5 in the circuit before this past Wednesday’s meeting with league-leading Mayfair. Glenn will visit Norwalk on Monday and is still hoping to advance to the postseason for the first time since 2000. Norwalk was also struggling as of late with a 7-14 overall record and 1-5 in the Suburban League before its road game at Bellflower this past Wednesday. The Lancers will visit Mayfair tonight and host La Mirada on Wednesday. Whitney improved to 7-12 overall and 3-4 in the Academy League following a 63-38 road win at Downey Calvary Chapel this past Tuesday. The Wildcats visit Brethren Christian tonight before hosting Sage Hill and Crean Lutheran on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. GIRLS BASKETBALL Cerritos outscored Artesia 27-3 in the second quarter and proceeded to rout the Pioneers 66-16 this past Wednesday night. Junior Alyssa Movchan led

everyone with 18 points, the most she has scored since posting the same total against North Torrance on Jan. 3. She also had seven steals and two assists. Sophomore Tatiana Fominyam added 12 points off the bench with seven points as the Lady Dons improved to 15-4 overall, 6-1 in league and have more wins since going 19-9 in the 2009-2010 season. Artesia, which got a career-high nine points from junior Keina Harris, fell to 3-18 overall, 1-6 in league. Gahr was 9-11 overall, 1-3 in league entering this week. Glenn remained winless in the Suburban League entering this week and has three wins in 20 games this season. Defending Suburban League champion Norwalk lost to Bellflower 38-31 this past Wednesday to fall to 7-11 overall, 2-5 in the circuit. Whitney continued to steamroll towards its fourth straight Academy League crown after crushing Downey Calvary Chapel 63-21 this past Tuesday night. The Lady Wildcats (18-2, 6-0) will face Sacramentobased Bradshaw Christian tonight in the Play4Kay Cancer Showcase at JSerra High. BOYS SOCCER The most improved team in the Suburban League was one minute away from ending its 45-game losing skid in the circuit. But Cerritos allowed Mayfair to score the game-winner late in overtime and the Monsoons rallied for a 5-4 victory this past Tuesday afternoon in a make-up game. Cerritos, which then fell to Artesia 2-0 this past Wednesday,

Continued from page 11 dropped to 3-11-2 overall and 0-7 in league play. The Dons have not won a league game since Feb. 1, 2010 when they edged John Glenn 2-1. But early on, it looked like they would end that long losing streak against league foes. Goals from junior forwards Paul Chun, in the 17th minute and Jonathan Fuller, in the 37th minute, allowed the Dons to hold a 2-0 halftime lead. The lead would increase to 4-1 by the 56th minute after sophomore forward Alex Florez and junior midfielder Uly Rosales added tallies within a six-minute span. But Mayfair scored three goals in the final 21 minutes of regulation, including the tying goal in the 76th minute. Cerritos, which has won more overall games for the first time since the 20072008 season, had previously taken Artesia and Norwalk to overtime and has been in virtually every league game until the final 10 minutes. Cerritos will host Glenn today and visit Bellflower on Wednesday. In other boys soccer action, Glenn (69-1, 2-5) snapped a four-game losing skid with a 3-2 overtime win against Mayfair this past Wednesday. Norwalk (7-62, 3-2-2) blanked Bellflower this past Wednesday and Whitney improved to 8-5-1 overall, 5-2 in the Academy League with a 4-0 win at Downey Calvary Chapel this past Tuesday. GIRLS SOCCER Artesia (11-6-2, 3-4) got two goals from senior midfielder Stephanie Flores as part of a 4-1 win over Cerritos this past Wednesday. Junior forward Erika Lizarraga scored the lone goal for the Lady Dons (3-12-1, 1-6). Gahr (2-4-3, 1-3) dropped a 2-1 decision to Lynwood this past Tuesday as sophomore midfielder Erika Garcia scored on a free kick in the 76th minute.

Public Corruption: Senator Rod Wright Convicted of Voter Fraud, Perjury By Randy Economy

California State Senator Roderick Wright has been found guilty of living outside his Inglewood district when he successfully ran for his state seat in 2008. Wright was found guilty by a Los Angeles County Superior Court jury who deliberated less than two days before finding the Senator guilty of eight counts, including two counts of perjury, one count of filing a false declaration of candidacy and five counts of fraudulent voting in elections in 2008 and 2009, all felonies. The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorneys Bjorn Dodd and Michele Gilmer with the Public Integrity Division prosecuted and the case was quickly hailed by their boss District Attorney Jackie Lacey. The case centered on evidence obtained by the District Attorney’s office that Wright on Feb. 13, 2008, declared his intent to become the Democratic candidate for the 25th Senate District, claiming that he lived in one of the units at 868 Glenway Drive, a five-unit complex that he owns in Inglewood. Dodd and Gilmer claimed that Wright lived at the same address when he registered to vote in 2007. Wright, who previously served in the state Assembly, was elected to the state senate on Nov. 4, 2008. Lacey and her team of prosecutors argued that Wright intentionally “misled voters in the 25th Senate district because his true residence was his Baldwin Hills home, which is in the 26th district.” A Grand Jury indicted Wright on eight felony counts in September 2010. Wright returns to court on March 12 before Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy for sentencing. He faces up to eight years, four months in state prison. He also would be barred for life from holding any elected office. Wright was elected to the California State Senate in 2008, representing what was then the 25th District and was reelected in 2012 to the 35th District, which includes the communities of Alondra Park, Carson, Compton, East Carson, East Compton, Gardena, Harbor City, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lennox, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Palos Verdes Peninsula, Rancho Dominguez, San Pedro, Torrance, Watts, West Athens, West Thisandis is You You Carson, West Compton, Willowbrook This This is Your Wilmington. for the Ad Lo
